Stolzenburg, Kari M. "Agnes von Lilien: A Translation by Kari Stolzenburg." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3660.

Full text
Abstract:
The novel Agnes von Lilien by Caroline von Wolzogen, although celebrated during the period of Weimar Classicism, was not generally well known to English-speaking readers and researchers until recently. This project aims to address this situation by creating an easily accessible English translation of the novel complete with critical annotations for the benefit of researchers and lay readers alike. The annotated translation presented in this work is an excerpt of the full translation of the work drawn in particular from the first third of the novel. This novel, first published in 1798, reflects many ideals of the Enlightenment, as well as opinions on women's roles and women's education. In the introduction, I trace the way that the novel seeks to gently persuade the nobility and educated middle class to change the world around them. This is done through the ever-present contrasts filling its pages alongside the novel's emphasis on ideal possibilities. Rather than serving as a revolutionary critique, I assert that the story conveys a quiet call for a level of social reform that still assures the nobility their power while nevertheless challenging them to use that power for the betterment of society. Women are urged to extend their reach to the outer boundaries of womanhood rather than being content with the confinement imposed by traditional society. I conclude that the strength of Wolzogen's text and the trait that draws readers back even centuries later is the fact that, under the cloak of intrigue, adventure, and romance expected from the novel form, the ideals of the Enlightenment shine clearly. In spite of social and political changes over the past two centuries, the call to virtue, industry, reason, and self-improvement, regardless of gender or social class, still maintains its relevance and power for readers in the modern era.

Abstract:
The present diploma thesis deals with new optimization suggestions and their introduction to the logistics distribution chain of the online shop administered by the Lilien Czech Jewelry s.r.o. company. The thesis is comprised of two interconnected parts. The first, theoretical part, is dedicated to the description of key terms which are necessary for the general understanding of the importance of logistics chains in the efficiency of a company, as well as for the understaning of the practical part which follows. The second, practical part, deals with the company in question itself. The aim of the thesis is to provide an evaluation of the logistics chain of the given company as well as its resources. This includes an overview of the state of things before and after innovations proposed and carried out based on a previous bachelor's thesis. Further, the thesis treats the topic of new optimization suggestions regarding the processes involved in the flow of goods to the customer. This concerns specifically suggestions affecting the international distribution of delivery and storage within the company. Other phases of the chain are, however, not omitted.

Swarts, Lynne Michelle Art History &amp Art Education College of Fine Arts UNSW. "Resistance, Regeneration and the Figuring of the 'New Jew': Ephraim Moses Lilien and 'Muscular Jewry'." Publisher:University of New South Wales. Art History & Art Education, 2007. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/44089.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis embraces a cross-disciplinary approach to the examination of Jewish body culture, and integrates aspects of Jewish studies with new theories of gender and visual culture, thus contributing specifically to the field of Jewish body culture in relation to the visual arts. It demonstrates that at the fin de si??cle the Zionist artist, Ephraim Moses Lilien, integrated Nordau's concept of 'Muscular Jewry' and Buber's notion of a 'Jewish Cultural Renaissance' in order to figure the 'New Jew'. It establishes that Lilien's figuring of 'Muscular Jewry' as a visibly athletic, explicitly heterosexual, male body, bearing Jewish distinction, was developed as a crucial strategy to overcoming the twin dilemmas of Jewish alterity: antisemitism and assimilation. By proving that Lilien's art serves as a crucial model for both regenerating the Jewish male body and resisting antisemitic projections of decadence and degeneracy, this thesis expands upon current scholarship. It applies Margaret Olin's theory of ' visual redemption' to Lilien's figuring of the 'New Jew' and Daniel Boyarin's articulation of Homi Bhaba's Post-Colonial theory of mimicry as imitation, inversion and resistance to determine how Lilien's images functioned as an art of resistance against the dominant Christian European culture. By demonstrating how Lilien drew upon the modern and rebellious Jugendstil to figure the 'New Jew' and produce a new, defiant and authentic Jewish visual culture, this thesis proves he transformed the image of the diaspora Jew into the New Hebrew or Israeli tsabar, forty years before it became part of Israeli identity. Nevertheless, this thesis also uncovers the double-binded predicament inherent to Lilien's quest; despite his attempt to use mimicry of the athleticised, hyper-masculine, genetically pure, normative body as a strategy to resist antisemitic rhetoric and invert its projection, the closest parallel to Lilien's figure of 'Muscular Jewry' remained this same image which became instrumental to eugenic campaigns across Europe, particularly in Nazi Germany. Ultimately what is exposed by this thesis is the illusion underpinning Lilien's figuring of the 'New Jew'; that the Christianised Eurocentric body culture, designed to eradicate decadence, degeneration and Semitism, could resolve the problematic struggle for a Jewish national identity.

Abstract:

All growth retardant treatments reduced plant height compared to controls. Plant height decreased linearly with increasing concentration of XE-1019 for both one- and two-spray treatments. High concentrations of XE-1019 delayed anthesis; ancymidol treatments did not. Individual corolla length was not affected by treatments. Treatments did not affect daughter bulb depletion or new daughter bulb growth. Total leaf area and leaf dry weight decreased as XE-1019 concentration increased; ancymidol treatments did not affect leaf area, but did reduce leaf dry weight. Leaf total soluble carbohydrate decreased with increasing concentration of XE-1019.

Abstract:
This study is about Lilith, a demonic character from Mesopotamian mythology. She was originally described as a wind demon that caused desolation and destruction everywhere she went. According to some Jewish folklore Lilith was Adam’s first wife, though she refused to submit to him and fled to the desert. Throughout history Lilith has been given a lot of different forms and this study aims to map some of her various forms in modern time. The purpose of this study is to look into how Lilith has been used in modern litterateur. The study will examine which forms that appear and if some are more prominent than others. In order to fulfill the purpose, a qualitative content analysis has been implemented — based on the concept of archetypes that also make up the study’s theoretical foundation. The results show three authors’ books that focus on the usage of Lilith. The material consist of three occult and esoteric books and the result shows that Lilith has been used and presented in various ways. The main theme that all books supports is that Lilith is a mean to reclaim the female sexuality. It’s about interpretative prerogative, especially concerning strong female characters.

Full text
Abstract:
Ethylene and carbohydrate deprivation were investigated as possible causes of bud abortion in Lilium longiflorum Thunb. Silver thiosulfate (STS) was investigated as an inhibitor of ethylene-induced abortion. Fourteen days of 92.5% irradiance reduction increased bud abortion when plants were exposed to 2.07 mM ethephon. Percent bud abortion was 39% and 60% for plants grown in full irradiance and reduced irradiance, respectively. Ethephon resulted in 54% abortion, regardless of irradiance at 4.15 mM. A 70% irradiance reduction for 14 days did not increase bud abortion when plants were treated with ethephon. STS was applied to plants at visible bud +2 weeks followed by ethephon application 2 days later. Bud abortion was reduced from 69 to 13% with 2 mM STS; the STS x ethephon interaction was significant. STS inhibited ethephon-induced bud abortion when applied at visible bud, 4 weeks prior to ethephon application; However, STS application at flower bud initiation did not prevent/reduce ethephon-induced bud abortion.

Hallam, Lynne. "Intertextual interventions in the novels of Marlene Streeruwitz and Lilian Faschinger." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2012. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13066/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers prose texts by the Austrian authors Marlene Streeruwitz and Lilian Faschinger from the viewpoint of intertextuality. The research does not rely on the narrow definitions of intertextuality which are concerned with the appearance of an anterior text in a later text, or on studies of source and influence. Rather my treatment of the novels considers the way meanings are constructed by a network of cultural and social discourses which embody distinct codes, expectations and assumptions. This study discusses the ways in which the chosen texts, through their intertexts, display a postmodern impetus towards reappropriating authorized discourse in new and challenging ways, from feminist perspectives. My intertextual readings are alert to two main threads – the critique of aspects of Austrian society evident in the novels of Streeruwitz and Faschinger and their place within the tradition of Österreich-Beschimpfung, and the interventions into issues pertaining to gender. I examine thematic similarities and differences in the texts, which draw attention to specifically Austrian or gender related issues, as well as scrutinizing formal and linguistic elements. Ultimately, my thesis poses and suggests answers to questions regarding strategies of intervention by feminist authors and the fruitfulness of intertextual readings.

Full text
Abstract:

Although Lillian Hellman was obsessed with truth, in her memoirs she often exaggerates, confabulates, and lies. So pervasive was Heliman's penchant for making things up that her reputation as a memoirist has suffered under a deluge of criticism. Hellman personified a era of many societal changes: greater sexual freedom for women, more opportunities for women to work, and television's growing impact on creating celebrities. Foremost, however, central to .Hellman's life was-the advent of McCarthyism, a period she describes in Scoundrel Time Scoundrel Time has drawn more criticism--actually vitriol--than any of her works, possibly because it tells many unwanted truths about that era. Despite her proclivity for fabulation:, Hellman's "stories"--her works of fiction presented as fact--often engage those underlying truths essentially "truer" than her surface fictions.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis compares how Lilian Ngoyi of South Africa and Fannie Lou Hamer of the United States crafted political identities and assumed powerful leadership, respectively, in struggles against racial oppression via the African National Congress and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. The study asserts that Ngoyi and Hamer used alternative sources of personal power which arose from their location in the intersecting social categories of culture, gender and class. These categories challenge traditional disciplinary boundaries and complicate any analysis of political economy, state power relations and black liberation studies which minimize the contributions of women. Also, by analyzing resistance leadership squarely within both African and North American contexts, this thesis answers the call of scholar Patrick Manning for a “homeland and diaspora” model which positions Africa itself within the historiography of transnational academic debates.

Abstract:
I’m a teacher to be with the dream to influence and change the society’s perspective. The high school students are our new generation and they are the ones who will continue to build our future society. When gender is discussed in schools, reflections usually describe the difference in pay between gender or that men has fewer parenting days. Attention to differences is good, that should teachers continue with, but only describing the visible factors does not build society forward. The underlying structures must be led to the surface for a change to occur. New perspectives on gender equality and why society is structured as it is presents a part of what this study will highlight. Lilith, the distant and forgotten archetype who was, according to the myth, Adam's first wife. This archetype carries themes that can be applied in understanding contemporary structures and seeing equality from other perspectives. Lilith is the figure this study will focus on. Griffith, David LaMond. "George MacDonald's Lilith A: A Transcription." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31892.

Full text
Abstract:
George MacDonald's last major work of fiction, Lilith, was published in 1895, but the first version of the romance was written in March of 1890. Lilith is an account of the unintentional journey of the protagonist into another world populated by both mythological figures drawn from the Judeo-Christian tradition and by horrific personifications of the psychological horrors of the protagonist's own mind. The story of Lilith describes the protagonist's experiences in this other world which bring him to the point of repentance.

The manuscript of the first version, known now as Lilith A, is housed in the British Library along with seven other typed revisions and printer's proofs. Taken together, the A-H manuscripts of Lilith represent the complete production history textual evolution of what is arguably MacDonald's greatest literary work. The body of this paper contains the 161 page transcription of Lilith A produced from the original manuscript and a microfilm photographic reproduction provided by the British Library.

The introduction of this paper outlines the history of Lilith A, describes it's similarities and differences with the published version, provides a bibliographic description of the manuscript, and outlines the editorial principles used in producing the transcript of the text. Miller, W. B., and D. A. Bailey. "Determining Optimum Length of Bulb Cold Storage for Oriental Hybrid Lilies in Arizona." College of Agriculture, University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ), 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/216051.

Full text
Abstract:
Bulbs of three varieties of oriental hybrid lilies were stored at 4 °C for 6 to 12 weeks prior to greenhouse forcing at 18 °C night temperature. Increasing duration of storage reduced the number of days to shoot emergence, visible flower buck and anthesis for each variety. The number of days from planting to anthesis ranged from 70 to 102 and varied with cultivar and storage duration. Increasing durations of storage had no commercially significant effect on the number of flowers reaching anthesis, number of leaves or aborted flower buds. The varieties used in this study flower earlier than commercially established cultivars and may be successfully forced in Arizona for early spring holidays.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

In Sweden, the County Administration board is responsible for improving the water quality in lakes and watercourses according to the European Union Water Framework Directive. In Västmanland county, where river Lillån is situated, the County Administration of Västmanland have the main responsibility for the aquatic environment in that area. The knowledge about the different watercourses in the chatchment of river Lillån is today limited. The aim with this study was to evaluate the ecological quality of River Lillån based on water chemistry analyses and benthic fauna investigations. The aim was also for the benthic fauna to compere different samplingsites and sampling methods with each other in order to see how the species composition changes in the river, and to see the advantages and disadvantages with different sampling tecniques. The methods used for the assessment was presented in a handbook composed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The results of the study showed that Lillån have good quality concerning acidity and the general ecological status. The benthic fauna investigations indicated high levels of nutrients and thereby resulted in poor status concerning that parameter. The conclusion of the study was that river Lillån does not fulfill the criteria of good status according to the Water Framework Direcive composed by the European Union.

Keywords: Water directive, water quality evaulation, benthic fauna, acidification, nutrients, methods for sample-taking.

Nyckelord: Vattendirektiv, statusbedömning, bottenfauna, försurning, näringsämnen, provtagningsmetoder.

Abstract:
Magistrantūros studijų baigiamajame darbe pateikiami lelijos (Lilium L.) morfogenezės indukcijos in vitro tyrimų duomenys. Darbo rezultatai. Lelijų mikrosvogūnėlių formavimosi dažnį in vitro lemia augimo reguliatorių ir genotipo sąveika. Tos pačios lelijų veislės pasižymi skirtinga regeneracine galia, priklausomai nuo maitinamosios terpės sudėties. Iš tirtų veislių didžiausia regeneracine galia pasižymėjo veislės ˈRed Beautyˈizoliuoti eksplantai. Veislių ˈWiener Blutˈ ir ˈNo Limitˈ mikrosvogūnėlių regeneracijai in vitro maitinamąją terpę tikslinga papildyti 1,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D deriniu. Augimo reguliatorių derinys 2,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D labiausiai skatino veislės ˈRed Beautyˈ mikrosvogūnėlių susiformavimą. Veislės ˈSėkmėˈ izoliuoti eksplantai mikrosvogūnėlius formavo intensyviau augimo reguliatorių derinio 3,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D poveikyje. Intensyviausiai šaknis in vitro formavo veislių ˈRed Beautyˈ ir ˈWiener Blutˈ mikrosvogūnėliai.
The master work presents the results of increasing of lilies induction of morphogenesis in vitro studies. Object of the work: lilies (Lilium L.) cultivars of ˈRed Beautyˈ, ˈWiener Blutˈ, ˈSėkmėˈ, ˈNo Limitˈ. Methods of the work: Explants were cultured on the MS regeneration medium supplemented with macro salt concentration which is reduced to 0.5 of the initial concentration level, with different combinations of growth regulators. Evaluated for micro bulbs and root formation rate (%) and micro bulbs quantity of explant (units). The results of work. Lilies microbulbs formation in vitro is determined by the frequency of growth regulators and genotype interactions. The same varieties of lilies are characterized by different regenerative capacity, depending on the composition of the nutrient medium. Among investigated cultivars the highest morphogenic potention distinguished isolated explants of ˈRed Beautyˈ. For micropropagation of cultivars ˈWiener Blutˈ and ˈNo Limitˈ most suitable is medium supplement by 1,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D combination. Growth regulators combination 2,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D influenced cultivar ˈRed Beautyˈ. All isolated explants of cultivar ˈSėkmėˈ formed microbulbs on medium with 3,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D. The most intensive roots in vitro formed microbulbs varieties of ˈRed Beautyˈ and ˈWiener Blutˈ.

This thesis analyzes the Pombagira as a reinterpretation of the mythical goddess Lilith, the Sumerian mythology. She appeared in colonial Brazil and pervaded the imperial period through the memories and the popular imagination, and pelleted over time across European religious beliefs, African, Gypsy and indigenous. The Pombagira presents syncretic way of alluding to the figure of a Spanish queen with Gypsy features, identifying himself as Maria Padilha of Castile and expressing itself in the rituals of the terraces of african-Brazilian religions. From research carried out on the primordial myth of Lilith, one can observe the mythical and behavioral similarities present in Pombagira entity with Lilith goddess, especially with regard to their rebellion and their longing for freedom, not accepting the restriction arising from institutions religious and cultural, trying, through male domination, control over females, inhibiting and putting the woman as an object, denying their condition as subjects in history.
