Abstract:
This article discusses the construction of a Jewish aristocratic identity through art collecting and patronage, in parallel with other “aristocratic” activities and lifestyles. The focus is a particular Galican family ennobled by Franz Joseph I in 1881. The family’s ambitions and achievements are known from a memoir by Artur Lilien-Brzozdowiecki (1890, Lviv-1958, London), who was a great-great-grandson of the community head Rachmiel von Mises (1800-1891), a distant cousin of the artist Moses Ephraim Lilien (1874-1925), and a grandson of the banker Ignacy Lilien, who financed Moses Ephraim’s education. The article considers the self-construction of the family members as art connoisseurs and artists. These included the banker, industrialist, artist, and art collector Maurycy Nierenstein (1840-1917); painter Helene von Mises (1883-1942); architect Marya Lilien (1900-1998); and economist, lawyer, army officer, and collector Artur Lilien-Brzozdowiecki.

Abstract:
Summary This paper discusses Bruno Schulz’s recently discovered 1937 essay on the Drohobycz-born graphic artist Ephraim Moses Lilien, best known for his iconic Zionist-themed black-and-white graphics in the Secessionist style. Schulz describes in his essay the seminal influence that the encounter with Lilien’s art had on him at the age of thirteen: “There took place in me at that time a kind of internal shift. Lilien effected a powerful fertilization of my internal world, that revealed itself in an early, youthful and clumsy creativity.” As the first known document in which Bruno Schulz openly presents his views on the contemporary political, cultural and spiritual concerns of his Jewish generation in Poland and Eastern Europe, the Lilien article enables a more direct reading of Schulz’s own aesthetic project as an inheritor of the ethos of the fin-de-siècle Jewish Renaissance Movement, and as a contribution to the development of Jewish literary modernisms in Central Europe. The disappearance of the Lilien article from readers′ consciousness for over three quarters of a century - since World War II - and its reemergence today not only represents an exciting next episode in the quest, initially undertaken by Jerzy Ficowski, to recover Schulz’s existing oeuvre. It also offers a fitting metaphor for a larger phenomenon taking place today within the fields of both Polish and Jewish studies, that I have called here the archaeology of Polish Jewish modernism. The discussion proposes an additional paradigm of “national indifference”, adapted from the work of historian Tara Zahra, as a tool for thinking Schulz’s texts as a simultaneously Jewish and Universal writing that resists attachment to political nationalisms, and to the project of nation-state building. More directly than he had done in the Sanatorium stories, Schulz reveals in the Lilien essay a strong commitment to the Jewish/Universal project of Cultural Zionism, inspired by Ahad Ha’am and promoted by prominent Jewish thinkers and spokespeople of the Lemberg/Lwów region, and a deep reticence about and finally rejection of political Zionism. Thus Schulz’s Lilien essay points to, and becomes an apologia for, his own decision to seek a continuation of the religious, mythic and messianic Jewish tradition not in the promise of return to Palestine, but through the medium of the living book, which he calls here “that creation born of the longing of golus”.

Nature (Lond.). 334:62-64) have provided evidence that N-cadherin, alone or in combination with other molecules, can participate in the induction of neurite extension. We have developed an affinity purification procedure for the isolation of whole N-cadherin from chick brain and have used the isolated protein as a substrate for neurite outgrowth. N-cadherin promotes the rapid extension of neurites from chick ciliary ganglion neurons, which extend few or no neurites on adhesive but noninducing substrates such as polylysine, tissue culture plastic, and collagens. N-cadherin is extremely potent, more so than the L1 adhesion molecule, and comparable to the extracellular matrix protein laminin. Compared to laminin, however. N-cadherin promotes outgrowth from ciliary ganglion neurons extremely rapidly and with a distinct morphology. These results provide a direct demonstration that N-cadherin is sufficient to induce neurite outgrowth when substrate bound and suggest that the mechanism(s) involved may differ from that induced by laminin.

Abstract:
In assuming that the violin family of instruments is the staple of Western instrumental art music, Hautboisten, among the most important musicians of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, constitute a neglected area of research. Hautboisten are known to have been among the major suppliers of musical entertainment in the German-speaking lands in the first half of the eighteenth century. The term Hautboistenbande has often been translated by contemporary scholars as ‘oboe band’. Indeed, these ensembles developed into wind bands known as Harmoniemusik; Hautboisten, however, were originally routinely trained to perform on multiple wind instruments as well as string instruments. The Lilien Partbooks, which are part of the Sonsfeld Collection (the Sonsfeldsche Musikalien Sammlung; now held in the Bibliotheca Fürstenbergiana in Herdringen; D-HRD Fü 3741a), represent the most comprehensive primary source of music for such an ensemble. A detailed incipit catalogue of the compositions compiled in these partbooks draws together our current knowledge of the Lilien Partbooks and of eighteenth-century Prussian Hautboisten. The extensive catalogue of the works collated in the six partbooks constitutes a valuable aid for future research.

Stolzenburg, Kari M. "Agnes von Lilien: A Translation by Kari Stolzenburg." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3660.

Full text
Abstract:
The novel Agnes von Lilien by Caroline von Wolzogen, although celebrated during the period of Weimar Classicism, was not generally well known to English-speaking readers and researchers until recently. This project aims to address this situation by creating an easily accessible English translation of the novel complete with critical annotations for the benefit of researchers and lay readers alike. The annotated translation presented in this work is an excerpt of the full translation of the work drawn in particular from the first third of the novel. This novel, first published in 1798, reflects many ideals of the Enlightenment, as well as opinions on women's roles and women's education. In the introduction, I trace the way that the novel seeks to gently persuade the nobility and educated middle class to change the world around them. This is done through the ever-present contrasts filling its pages alongside the novel's emphasis on ideal possibilities. Rather than serving as a revolutionary critique, I assert that the story conveys a quiet call for a level of social reform that still assures the nobility their power while nevertheless challenging them to use that power for the betterment of society. Women are urged to extend their reach to the outer boundaries of womanhood rather than being content with the confinement imposed by traditional society. I conclude that the strength of Wolzogen's text and the trait that draws readers back even centuries later is the fact that, under the cloak of intrigue, adventure, and romance expected from the novel form, the ideals of the Enlightenment shine clearly. In spite of social and political changes over the past two centuries, the call to virtue, industry, reason, and self-improvement, regardless of gender or social class, still maintains its relevance and power for readers in the modern era.

Abstract:
The present diploma thesis deals with new optimization suggestions and their introduction to the logistics distribution chain of the online shop administered by the Lilien Czech Jewelry s.r.o. company. The thesis is comprised of two interconnected parts. The first, theoretical part, is dedicated to the description of key terms which are necessary for the general understanding of the importance of logistics chains in the efficiency of a company, as well as for the understaning of the practical part which follows. The second, practical part, deals with the company in question itself. The aim of the thesis is to provide an evaluation of the logistics chain of the given company as well as its resources. This includes an overview of the state of things before and after innovations proposed and carried out based on a previous bachelor's thesis. Further, the thesis treats the topic of new optimization suggestions regarding the processes involved in the flow of goods to the customer. This concerns specifically suggestions affecting the international distribution of delivery and storage within the company. Other phases of the chain are, however, not omitted.

Publisher:University of New South Wales. Art History & Art Education, 2007. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/44089.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis embraces a cross-disciplinary approach to the examination of Jewish body culture, and integrates aspects of Jewish studies with new theories of gender and visual culture, thus contributing specifically to the field of Jewish body culture in relation to the visual arts. It demonstrates that at the fin de si??cle the Zionist artist, Ephraim Moses Lilien, integrated Nordau's concept of 'Muscular Jewry' and Buber's notion of a 'Jewish Cultural Renaissance' in order to figure the 'New Jew'. It establishes that Lilien's figuring of 'Muscular Jewry' as a visibly athletic, explicitly heterosexual, male body, bearing Jewish distinction, was developed as a crucial strategy to overcoming the twin dilemmas of Jewish alterity: antisemitism and assimilation. By proving that Lilien's art serves as a crucial model for both regenerating the Jewish male body and resisting antisemitic projections of decadence and degeneracy, this thesis expands upon current scholarship. It applies Margaret Olin's theory of ' visual redemption' to Lilien's figuring of the 'New Jew' and Daniel Boyarin's articulation of Homi Bhaba's Post-Colonial theory of mimicry as imitation, inversion and resistance to determine how Lilien's images functioned as an art of resistance against the dominant Christian European culture. By demonstrating how Lilien drew upon the modern and rebellious Jugendstil to figure the 'New Jew' and produce a new, defiant and authentic Jewish visual culture, this thesis proves he transformed the image of the diaspora Jew into the New Hebrew or Israeli tsabar, forty years before it became part of Israeli identity. Nevertheless, this thesis also uncovers the double-binded predicament inherent to Lilien's quest; despite his attempt to use mimicry of the athleticised, hyper-masculine, genetically pure, normative body as a strategy to resist antisemitic rhetoric and invert its projection, the closest parallel to Lilien's figure of 'Muscular Jewry' remained this same image which became instrumental to eugenic campaigns across Europe, particularly in Nazi Germany. Ultimately what is exposed by this thesis is the illusion underpinning Lilien's figuring of the 'New Jew'; that the Christianised Eurocentric body culture, designed to eradicate decadence, degeneration and Semitism, could resolve the problematic struggle for a Jewish national identity.
