Abstract:
Energy-efficient building design models are one of the factors that need to be considered in building planning. In the morning to evening, sunlight as a source of natural light can be used as a source of lighting in buildings. By utilizing natural light, it will reduce energy consumption in buildings. Air conditioning and lighting are important factors in designing energy efficient buildings. In this study, analyzing natural and artificial lighting at Graha Pena Makassar Building. The research method is quantitative by measuring and analyzing several workspaces that are directly and indirectly related to openings in the building envelope. statistical descriptive analysis, namely entering data into tables and graphs, then analyzing the level of illumination in the analyzed workspace. The research objective was to determine the level of illuminance in several workspaces with different orientations. How is the effect of natural light distribution on building orientation and how is the artificial lighting system at workspace in the Graha Pena Makassar. The results showed that the orientation of the building had an effect on the distribution of natural light into the space. The spatial orientation facing East has a higher distribution of natural light than that of the south. Workspaces that are not directly related to window openings in the building envelope are using artificial lighting systems in the form of lights. The workspace has uneven illumination levels in its work area, because the layout and placement of lighting points have not been well planned. The contribution of this research is a reference in designing a building facade design with an attractive appearance, and can maximize the use of solar energy as a source of natural lighting, while still paying attention to the visual comfort of space users.

Title: Natural Light Intensity Analysis in Classroom; Case Study: Classroom at Bosowa University Lighting is an important part of buildings in supporting the productivity of human labor. Insufficient lighting can interfere with human activities and could cause health problems, like eye disorders. Building design must consider the functions and needs so that residents can feel comfortable. Good lighting levels can be achieved by utilizing natural and artificial lighting. The purpose of this study was to analyze the level of illumination in a room that is directly related to the openings of the building envelope and to analyze the different levels of illumination in classrooms with different orientations. Quantitative research methods by distributing measurement data in the form of tables, diagrams and graphs. Data analysis was performed using statistics and data analysis techniques, the results of the measurement were statistically descriptive. This study analyzed the differences in the level of illumination in the northern orientation and southern orientation classrooms. Based on the results of the analysis it can be concluded that the orientation of the building affects the level of illumination in the room. During the day the level of illumination is higher in the direction of orientation north than the direction of orientation south, especially the measurement point in the area close to the openings of the building envelope, but in this study the direction of classroom orientation towards the south is higher the level of illumination compared to the north orientation classrooms. This is understood by the treatment of building glass sheaths in the north orientation direction in the form of the use of frosted glass wallpaper, so it can be concluded that changes to the building facade affect the level of room illumination. The results of this study are expected to be a reference in building facade concepts and designing energy-efficient buildings.

This led to the phenomenon of affordable housing development. The issue of this research is the layout of type 54 affordable house considered by the lighting. The focus of this research is the type 54 affordable house in Kedung Badak Baru in Bogor. The purpose of this research is to get layout design guidelines of type 54 affordable house which consider the lighting and give input to the next architect and government in Bogor. The research method is quantitative descriptive analytic. Tropical architecture design theory and lighting theory are used as a reference in making an analysis. The result is the interior less bright. It because the layout design was surrounded by another room and incorrect placement and size of openings. The conclusion is to design new layout based each orientation of type 54 affordable house. And it also to place the suitable openings properly which will able to utilize the light.

Abstract:
This work focusses on understanding and exploiting the optical reflectance behaviour of carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites for the non-destructive determination of fibre orientation and surface defects. By taking a series of images under different lighting conditions, fibre reflections have been isolated and MATLAB image analysis has been used to calculate the fibre orientations across the surface of the composite. An average peak method has been developed and validated against manual orientation measurements for two different applications: a machined scarf repair surface and a discontinuous fibre composite. The same experimental method and analysis code showed good results for both cases without modification, when at least 16 images with different directional lighting conditions are used. Hence, this low-cost approach can be applied to a diverse range of quality assurance and research applications where fibre orientations or other surface details need to be characterised.

It’s well known that a criterion of estimating the varying natural lighting is exposure equal to the product of light intensity by its duration. Here we have made studies into the exposure in the room depending on the orientation of a light aperture and its location in space. The exposure has been considered by the example of three identical office rooms with the same light apertures oriented north, west and south and having three positions – vertical, inclined and horizontal. To calculate the annual exposure we made use of the well-known software package VELUX Daylight Visualizer 2. For convenience of analyzing the exposure there was introduced the concept of the natural exposure coefficient (NEC) which is a ratio between the exposure in the room and a simultaneous value of the outer exposure. Our studies have shown that exposure is an effective criterion to assess the indoor natural lighting in time. The existing system of estimating energy consumption in lighting buildings with the help of a simultaneous lighting is rough and does not take into account such factors as orientation of light apertures by the sides of the horizon and their location in space. The use of exposure let us improve the method of calculating energy consumption in lighting premises taking into account the light aperture location in space and their as orientation by the sides of the horizon. The numerical experiment performed has given a predicted result, namely, the most power-consuming room is the north-oriented one with the vertical light aperture and the least power-consuming room is the one with the horizontal light aperture. The room with the inclined light aperture has average energy consumption.

Coastal development adjacent to sea turtle nesting beaches can result in an increase in exposure to artificial lighting at night. That lighting can repel nesting females and interfere with the orientation of hatchlings from the nest to the sea. Disrupted hatchling orientation is a serious source of turtle mortality, sufficient to reduce recruitment and contribute to a long-term marine turtle population decline. The purpose of this study was to assess whether artificial lighting disrupts hatchling sea-finding behaviour at the largest loggerhead rookery in the South Pacific, the Woongarra coast, south-east Queensland. The crawling tracks of hatchlings that emerged from nests, as well as staged emergences, were used to assess the effect of lighting conditions at several local beaches on hatchling sea-finding behaviour. Disrupted orientation was observed at only a few locations, excluding the majority of the main nesting beach at Mon Repos Conservation Park. At the sites where orientation was disrupted, normal orientation was restored when a full moon was visible, presumably because lunar illumination reduced the perceived brightness of the artificial lights. The controlled use of lights used for guided turtle-viewing tour groups within Mon Repos conservation Park did not interfere with the sea-finding behaviour of hatchling turtles. Further coastal development, especially at the nearby town of Bargara, requires that a light management plan be formulated to ensure that development does not adversely affect the marine turtles that utilise the local nesting beaches.

Three experiments were conducted to investigate factors contributing to the ‘hollow face’ illusion. A novel method was employed in which the distance from the mask at which the illusion became apparent or disappeared, when retreating or approaching, respectively, was taken as a measure of the strength of the illusion. In all the experiments an effect of direction of observer's movement was found, demonstrating the stability of the initial percept. Upright orientations were compared with inverted ones to investigate if the illusion reflects a bias towards a familiar percept. The direction of lighting was also varied. Independent main effects of orientation and lighting were found to be consistent with preferences both for upright faces and for top lighting. However, inverted faces also produced the illusion to some extent, suggesting a general preference for convexity. The role of stereopsis in resolving the illusion was tested by comparing monocular with binocular viewing conditions. Monocular viewing conditions gave rise to shorter distances, suggesting that the retinal disparities available with binocular viewing are important in disambiguating the illusion at small distances. The results are interpreted within the framework of a 22-dimensional sketch derived from independent modular processing of visual information.

An in-depth study on a lighting location system is conducted in this paper. Firstly, the history and application of this system are summarized. The overall structure is detailed, including the detection principle of the lightning location, the orientation method, the detection circuit, the method of discriminating cloud flash and ground lightning signal, the error analysis, the guideline for station deployment, the preprocessing of the central station, and the function and structure of data server and user interface. The development of a lightning monitoring system in China is presented, and the construction of a new generation of a lightning location system in the Hubei Province power grid is introduced. Through the collection of measured data, the performance of the lightning location system in the lightning accident inspection rate, lightning location, and lightning situation statistics are analyzed. Artificial intelligence algorithms are applied in the lightning warning system. The new system has a high predicting accuracy.

The intention of this document is to explore the potential of lighting design to work as an orientation tool in relatively large-scale buildings, where users lack the environmental clues needed to create effective cognitive maps.Cognitive mapping is the process of mental structuring of an overall image or representation of the spaces and layout of a setting, for the purpose of wayfinding.The motivation of this thesis comes from observing the frustration experienced by students using the KTH Architecture building, documented through an empirical study and interviews.Literature review of human apprehension of spatial evidence that enable individuals to orient in the world is used to define the underlying structure for the design intervention.Understanding human cognition from an existential-phenomenological perspective through the work of Medard Boss and Ludwing Binswanger, together with the technical understanding of the objective fabric of the environment present in wayfinding literature are used to account for the lighting intervention on a studio floor from the KTH Architecture building.The thesis intention is to understand what architectural elements humans use to create a mental map for decision making when moving trough space, and use lighting rather than signage to accentuate, articulate and complement necessary architectural features for the process.

Abstract:
Daylight harvesting is an essential strategy that is often used to enhance both the design and performance of an architectural project. Windows, as crucial architectural elements, not only admit natural light into spaces but also provide the occupants with visual connections. However, the excessive usage of windows brings an uncontrolled amount of solar energy to the spaces and negatively affect the building's energy performance. When utilizing passive design strategies such as daylight harvesting, several parameters, including the electrical lighting system, can impact the outcome. The current study investigates the role of lighting systems on daylight harvesting's effectiveness and their impact on window dimension and total energy consumption. In this study, the optimum window-to-wall ratio of an open office in the presence of two different light sources (LED and fluorescent) is explored through a computer simulation method. A combination of tools including AGi32, ElumTools, OpenStudio, EnergyPlus, Radiance, and MATLAB helps to conduct the simulation and deliver optimal results. In the results and conclusion chapter, the study provides guidelines to specify optimal window percentages considering two lighting systems in each cardinal direction. Importantly, the guideline focuses only on energy performance and not on the spatial quality of the design.

Harnessing daylight with the use of windows helps to offset parts of the electric lighting needs, and decrease the total building energy consumption. This is accomplished by using glazed materials to admit daylight and lighting control systems, which can respond to the dynamic light level. However, improper implementation of a passive daylighting strategy may cause increased energy consumption. Sunlight is accompanied by solar heat radiation which can increase the HVAC load of a space and compromise the energy savings achieved by daylighting. Therefore, a balance between solar heat and light gain is required to fully take advantage of solar energy without reverse impacts. Concerning the mentioned balance, recent advancements in lighting technology question the effectiveness of natural light in reducing whole-building energy consumption. Due to the high energy efficiency of LED luminaires, lighting power consumption is rather low, even when the lighting system operates at full capacity. Therefore, it is unclear whether the solar energy coming through glazed materials works to the advantage or disadvantage of total building energy consumption. This study hypothesized that the total energy consumption of an open office with LED luminaires would be less in absence of solar energy compared to a scenario which utilizes the solar energy. A simulation-based methodology, using a combination of photometric computation and building energy simulation tools, was utilized to examine the hypothesis and explore the impacts of lighting systems on the optimum window-to-wall ratio. The results provide a helpful guideline which highlights the impact of lighting systems on window dimensions and their mutual effect on whole-building energy consumption. Although the optimum window-to-wall ratios suggested by this study only concern energy consumption, integration of them with occupants' preferences can propose an acceptable window-to-wall ratio that satisfies both design quality and performance of a building.

Stockholm’s subway system is considered one of the longest art galleries in the world.Each station has its own identity, but at the same time, all metro stations have the sameuniform functional light approach.This light could not prevent the passengers from gathering and walking randomlyat the subway station’s platform. Abstract:
In this paper, we investigate how controlled changes to image properties and orientation affect eye movements for repeated viewings of images of natural scenes. We make changes to images by manipulating low-level image content (such as luminance or chromaticity) and/or inverting the image. We measure the effects of these manipulations on human scanpaths (the spatial and chronological path of fixations), additionally comparing these effects to those predicted by a widely used saliency model (L. Itti & C. Koch, 2000). Firstly we find that repeated viewing of a natural image does not significantly modify the previously known repeatability (S. A. Brandt & L. W. Stark, 1997; D. Noton & L. Stark, 1971) of scanpaths. Secondly we find that manipulating image features does not necessarily change the repeatability of scanpaths, but the removal of luminance information has a measurable effect. We also find that image inversion appears to affect scene perception and recognition and may alter fixation selection (although we only find an effect on scanpaths with the additional removal of luminance information). Additionally we confirm that visual saliency as defined by L. Itti and C. Koch's (2000) model is a poor predictor of real observer scanpaths and does not predict the small effects of our image manipulations on scanpaths.

Context awareness is an important aspect in many ICT applications. For example, in an intelligent home network, location of the user enables session transfer, lighting, and temperature control, et cetera. In fact, in a body area sensor network (BASN), location estimation of a user helps in realizing realtime monitoring of the person (especially those who require help) for better health supervision. In this chapter the authors first introduce many localization methods and algorithms from the literature in BASNs. They also present classification of these methods. Amongst them, location estimation using signal strength is one of the foremost. In indoor environments, the authors found that the signal strength based localization methods are usually not accurate, since signal strength fluctuates. The fluctuation in signal strength is due to deficient antenna coverage and multi-path interference. Thus, localization algorithms usually fail to achieve good accuracy. The authors propose to solve this problem by combining multiple receivers in a body area sensor network to estimate the location with a higher accuracy. This method mitigates the errors caused by antenna orientations and beam forming properties. The chapter evaluates the performance of the solution with experiments. It is tested with both range-based and range-free localization algorithm that we developed. The chapter shows that with spatial diversity, the localization accuracy is improved compared to using single receiver alone. Moreover, the authors observe that range-based algorithm has a better performance.

Abstract:
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have progressed in recent years from emitting indicator level lighting to emitting enough light for illumination applications. This has opened a new field for LED applications, resulting in significant advantages over conventional light sources and creating some application challenges unique to LEDs. Conventional lighting methods provide little guidance for LED thermal problems since these usually involve a very high temperature source, such as a filament or an arc, and radiant heat transfer dissipates the thermal energy. LED junction temperatures are limited to much lower values and hence the heat transfer system cannot depend upon radiant energy transfer. This means the cooling methods for lighting now shift from primarily radiation to conduction and natural convection, and this paradigm shift lighting designers must recognize when moving to LEDs. In this paper, the development of a LED-based spot module heat sink in a free convective cooling system is discussed. The rationale for choosing a cylindrical tube, longitudinal fin (CTLF) heat sink is shown, as is the performance of five different configurations of the heat sink in various orientations. The requirement for using heat sinks in various orientations comes from lighting applications, where the light may be installed in various directions, such as vertical up, vertical down, horizontal, or at almost any other angle. Heat sink test results are plotted for Nussult number versus standard and modified channel Rayleigh number, showing a similar correlation to the parallel plate heat sinks investigated first by Elenbaas. A different correlation for the isolated-plate limit section is proposed for CTLF heat sinks, as well as a proposed area of operation on these Nu-Ra curves for orientation-insensitive heat sinks. Finally, explanations for the different levels of sensitivities observed in different areas of the Nu-Ra curves are offered.

Abstract:
Energy demand growth and depletion of conventional energy resources in recent years have led to exploring alternative energy resources and further concentration on improving energy efficiency of segments with higher energy consumption. Building energy demand is among the main areas of concern with a 40% average of total energy consumption in the US energy market. Within building energy demand approximately, the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, lighting system, has the largest energy consumption share compared to other systems such as electronics systems, water-heating-cooking, and other systems. This implies that small improvements in HVAC system loads will result in significant energy savings. Novel cost-effective solutions should be developed to integrate and optimize all the essential high-performance building attributes, especially energy efficiency and occupant productivity. Employing comprehensive building energy analysis (BEA) simulation tools are among the cheapest, yet are the cost-effective approaches in improving building energy performance. This paper follows the energy saving practice using existing BEA simulation tools with a focus on two major aspects that can contribute to building thermal loads: building orientation and integrating renewable energy. The results show the significant impact of building orientation for developing energy efficiency solutions with focus on integrating renewable energy technologies within high performance buildings. This work provides a basis for the follow on phases of this research to develop smart energy saving solutions using current BEA simulation platforms. Such adds-on features enable users to improve building energy saving by determining building design features and integrating renewable energy solutions based on identified optimal building orientations.
