Noronha, Lisete Fernandes de. "Whole life health insurance." Master's thesis, FCT - UNL, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/2362.
Full textThe health insurance has become complementary to the National Health Care system in Portugal. In the last years, the increase of this insurance has been considerable. Despite the health concerns of Portuguese citizens, related to better life quality, medical technology and others, the ageing of Portuguese population is a reality to be well thought-out. Regarding this fact, the whole life health insurance is an important product to be developed. In this dissertation, it is presented an approach to the calculation of the level premiums for the whole life health insurance in order to fulfil the Portuguese insurer’s market requests. A private health insurance company with a historical data of ten years provided the statistics used for this calculation. The levelled insurance premiums were calculated on the basis of the risk involved and according to the principle of equivalence. This means that regarding the period insured, the total of premiums should match the total of the benefits.

Full textMany people are exposed to trauma and subsequently experience mental health distress, though not all seek help for it. This study aimed to explore the relationship between attitudes towards seeking help and level of impairment in work/school, family, and social domains among individuals seeking treatment for traumatic exposure. This study also analyzed the relationship between attitudes to seeking help through various referral sources and demographic characteristics, including gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and level of education. The analysis revealed no significant relationship between level of impairment and attitudes to seeking help, yet significant differences were found when comparing attitudes towards help seeking among level of education and sexual orientation. Implications of the demographic characteristics of the help seeking population and lack of significance in the relationship between help seeking attitudes and level of impairment are discussed.

Rosado, Diaz Ivys J. "Leadership styles in life-threatening contexts| Exploring police officers' level of trust." Thesis, Capella University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3700853.
Full textThis quantitative study was an exploration of police officers’ in Puerto Rico level of trust, perception of leadership style, and perceived leadership effectiveness in two different contexts, normal contexts and life-threatening contexts. Data were collected through a web-based system, SurveyMonkey®, where police officers from Puerto Rico completed an online survey. The survey instrument included the Leadership Style Survey by Dr. Peter Northouse, the Global Trust Scale by Dr. Jason Colquitt, and the Perception of Leadership Effectiveness Scale published in Psych Articles. The sample included 128 sworn, active duty police officers from Puerto Rico. The findings of this study revealed that demographics such as age, sex, and years on the force were not related to trust in the supervisor by the police officers. The study findings further revealed that police supervisors in Puerto Rico demonstrated an authoritarian leadership style in both normal contexts and life-threatening contexts. Multiple regression analysis showed that high levels of authoritarian leadership styles are related to high levels of trust. Although the study findings revealed that, overall, leaders’ skills were rated on the subscale as moderately bad, authoritarian leaders were also perceived as effective leaders in both normal contexts and life threatening contexts.

Full textTamssaouet, Ferhat. "Towards system-level prognostics : modeling, uncertainty propagation and system remaining useful life prediction." Thesis, Toulouse, INPT, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020INPT0079.
Full textPrognostics is the process of predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) of components, subsystems, or systems. However, until now, the prognostics has often been approached from a component view without considering interactions between components and effects of the environment, leading to a misprediction of the complex systems failure time. In this work, a prognostics approach to system-level is proposed. This approach is based on a new modeling framework: the inoperability input-output model (IIM), which allows tackling the issue related to the interactions between components and the mission profile effects and can be applied for heterogeneous systems. Then, a new methodology for online joint system RUL (SRUL) prediction and model parameter estimation is developed based on particle filtering (PF) and gradient descent (GD). In detail, the state of health of system components is estimated and predicted in a probabilistic manner using PF. In the case of consecutive discrepancy between the prior and posterior estimates of the system health state, the proposed estimation method is used to correct and to adapt the IIM parameters. Finally, the developed methodology is verified on a realistic industrial system: The Tennessee Eastman Process. The obtained results highlighted its effectiveness in predicting the SRUL in reasonable computing time

Full textMyers, Edwin J. "Fieldwork quality of life: addressing the Occupational Therapy Level II fieldwork student/supervisor relationship." Thesis, Boston University, 2014. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/11156.
Full textOccupational therapy Level II fieldwork (FW) students face contemporary stressors that may interfere with the learning process. Academic programs have a greater number of non-traditional students who must find a balance between academic, family and financial obligations. FW environments have become more stressful as increased productivity levels, shorter treatment durations, and budget cuts control clinic operations. These stressors may result in the FW student expressing higher degrees of anxiety and decreased confidence in performing entry-level skills at graduation. While physician and nursing professions have addressed best practices to manage clinical student stressors and training strategies for supervisors, a review of the occupational therapy (OT) literature reveals no study focusing on FW student well-being. This is surprising given the value that OT places on quality of life and establishing therapeutic relationships with our clients. This doctoral project describes a program directed to OT practitioners who have little or no experience in supervising OT Level II FW students. The program, given as a continuing education course, will provide the participants with training and tools to establish therapeutic relationships with their FW students. The program will use elements of the Intentional Relationship Model (Taylor, 2008) to educate the OT supervisor to use the therapeutic use of self (TUOS) to improve the quality of the student/supervisor relationship. The participants will also be introduced to the Fieldwork Quality of Life (FWQoL), a theoretical framework developed for this doctoral project, which will provide guidelines to assist the OT supervisor in determining if the FW student is having a positive FW experience. The program will use a small group format incorporating lecture, group discussions, video simulations, and provision of standardized questionnaires to assist the FW supervisor in monitoring the student's confidence and anxiety levels. A follow-up program, composed of volunteers from the program, will track their supervision of a FW student to determine program effectiveness.

Entry-level residence life professionals living where they work experience high rates of job stress, burnout, and attrition. These individual concerns also create challenges for organizational effectiveness. Many studies have uncovered factors related to these issues, but few have considered what promotes perseverance in the face of such adversity. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand entry-level, live-in residence life professionals’ experiences of workplace resilience, a construct that broadly refers one’s ability to maintain or improve positive function in response to adversity in the workplace. This study was conducted with a constructivist approach to understand the individual experiences of diverse participants. Ten participants engaged in two individual 90-minute, indepth interviews to discuss their history, experiences, and reflections regarding adversity and resilience in the workplace. Data were analyzed inductively to discover themes regarding resilience for residence life professionals. Findings illuminated participant experiences of workplace adversity and resilience, as well as participant beliefs about themselves and the nature and role of resilience in the workplace context. Discussion of findings resulted in four primary conclusions: (a) adversity and resilience coexist in balance with each other; (b) resilience can be learned, as well as lost; (c) resilience is personal and experienced uniquely by individuals; and (d) resilience is a systems issue that is promoted through partnership. Implications of these findings suggest that individual and organizational outcomes of adversity and resilience are intertwined, and further understanding and promotion of workplace resilience in this setting could be mutually beneficial by contributing to improved employee wellbeing and performance.
Marino, Lucas Charles. "Level of Repair Analysis for the Enhancement of Maintenance Resources in Vessel Life Cycle Sustainment." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10785844.
Full textThe United States Coast Guard does not adequately perform a Level of Repair Analysis and Business Case Analysis to align vessel maintenance requirements with available resources during the development of an Integrated Logistics Life Cycle Plan (ILSP) which leads to increased vessel sustainment costs and reduced workforce proficiency. The ILSP’s maintenance philosophy dictates the designed supportability and maintainability of a vessel throughout its life cycle yet existing ILSPs fail to prescribe the required balance of Coast Guard (internal employees) and non-Coast Guard (contracted) technicians for the execution of hull, mechanical, and electrical depot maintenance. This research develops a standard model to enhance the balance of maintenance resources using a Business Case Analysis (BCA) extension of a Level of Repair Analysis (LORA) informed by Activity-Based Costing Management (ABC/M) theory. These analyses are integral to a complete Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) and will contain a simplified LORA framework that provides an analysis of alternatives, a decision analysis, and a sensitivity analysis for the development of a maintenance philosophy. This repeatable analysis can be used by engineering managers to develop and sustain cost-effective maintenance plans through all phases of a vessel’s life cycle (acquisition, sustainment, and disposal).

Full textThe scope of this thesis was to develop a comprehensive model system of the genus Daphnia, a key organism in the pelagic food web of lakes and reservoirs and a widely used model organism in experimental and theoretical ecology. Although its central role in applied and basic research in aquatic ecology is obvious, there are still fundamental problems in modelling the observed dynamics of Daphnia (for details see chapter 2). Therefore, a basic motivation of this work was to use scientific results obtained in independently conducted research for developing a model that brings these results into context. Instead of following a "problem-oriented" paradigm applicable to a single, well defined problem or scientific hypothesis, the underlying concept of the emerging model system was considered to be "species-oriented". Thus, various relevant processes are included into the framework in order to simulate the dynamics of daphnids displayed on different levels of biological organization. To facilitate its application to various problems in ecological research on the genus Daphnia, the model system fulfills the following three important properties: (1) model outputs are thoroughly validated on experimental data in order to guarantee sound quantitative outputs of the model system (2) the system spans over different levels of biological organization with special emphasis laid upon the individual level and the population level (3) the model´s architecture follows a nested design with a defined individual level model that is integrated into a population level model The whole model system is able to describe an individual´s development over time on basis of physiological properties of the organism and, furthermore, how these individual level processes interact with the dynamics on the population level. Due to its nested design, applications of separate submodels (e.g. the individual-level model) are possible
