Barrière, Catherine. "Lieux et objets sacrés Bamana de la région de Segu (Mali)." Clermont-Ferrand 2, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997CLF20015.
Full textThe subject of this research is "the evolution of bamana religious beliefs and practices". A comparative approach was taken, based on date gathered from 64 villages within a 30 km. Radius of segu. There were three primary lines of inquiry: assessment of the current status of bamana sacred places; description of traditional ways in which powerful objects were used for warfare, magic, or protection; and an analysis of current practices in relation to traditional ones in order to assess processes of continuity and change in bamana social organization. Interviews were conducted with a range of magico-religious practitioners, including blacksmiths, fortune-tellers, marabouts, and hunters, who either fulfill religious roles or who act as specialists in the mediation of individual relations. The latter provide their clientele with charms or magical objects for purposes of aggression or protection. While my findings reveal significant changes in village society-evinced for instance by the virtual dissappearance of sacred, genie-sheltering groves, the protection of powerful objects, and the construction of numerous mosques-such changes nevertheless do not suggest a radical acculturation. Ineed, even though sacrificial rituals have dissapeared from the ritual calendar, careful attention to bamana discourses has allowed me to understand that certain traditional practices remain while new practices have developed around very different sources: the boli have been burried, but new objects have appeared. Practitioners take materials from various sources for their purposes. Finally, the daily existence of these powerful rites, played out in an invisible realm, reveals an extremely tense social climate, shatter the myth of african solidarity and betray the development of based on the development of individualistic behaviors which constitute the backbone of witchcraft and of black magic

Full textThis research is a survey of religious and spatial practices in the ancient Mediterranean, that takes its start from an interdisciplinary analysis of the category of ritual space as an integrated process of bodily, ideological and symbolic traits. The first part discusses the categories that in ancient and modern times have been used to define the ritual space (religious landscape, places of worship, religious architecture) considering the perspectives of history of religions, religious anthropology and archeology. The second part focuses on the categories of space and of ritual in their relationship with the founding principles of polytheistic logic and religious practice. Both the concrete aspect of the monumentalization of the places of worship and the conceptual one of the presence of gods in ritual spaces (particularly in Rome) are investigated. In the third part the Roman Africa is explored, examining some significant case studies in the context of the contact between roman and indigenous cultures. Using epigraphic and archaeological sources, the transformation of the cultural spaces in the Roman period, and the expansion of Roman models in contact with indigenous models, are investigated, focusing on the cases of the Thinissut sanctuary and of the places of worship of the city of Thugga

Full textThis mémoire proposes an anthropological exploration of the slametan ritual feast as practiced today by the Javanese Muslim of Yogyakarta. Based in a ritual studies perspective, my research aims at establishing the modalities of religious coexistence of persons living in two popular neighborhoods of the city by posing an in-depth look into the concepts of place, agency, presence and participation, and of common goals, as well as by taking into consideration the local notions of the Javanese sense of self, and of rukun and slamet, pointing to the social ideals of harmony and collective well-being. I suggest in this mémoire that the ritual practice of slametan constitutes a Javanese strategy aimed at the affirmation of their cultural sense of belonging as well as at the upholding of practices and traditions specific to the Javanese Muslims know as kejawen, and which enables them to pacifically differentiate themselves from their neighbors pertaining to other cultural and religious spheres.

Full textThis thesis studies the store entrance in a spatial and experiential way. Using both the conceptual framework of environmental psychological sociology and experiential marketing, we study the entrance into the market place and consumption through space appropriation strategies and a process of liminality which results in rites of passage. Combining qualitative methodologies we answer to our research issue: How retail space fences are involved in creating a shopping experience? After an exploratory study, our second study made with Guerlain allows us to analyze the shopping experience in the context of many stores designs located in various commercial environments. Our results show that the creation of the shopping experience is a co-production resulting from the interaction between the types of intermediate spaces delimiting the store, the ritualization of experience and the appropriation process of consumers

Full textThe present research was developed in the city center of Sao Paulo (Brazil), a region known as "Cracolândia", being one of the biggest "open scenes" for crack consumption in the country. In French, the place is originally a "haut-lieu", that is, a place of religious sacrifice. In this sense, we shall tackle the "hauts-lieux" of pharmakon consumption, as they inform us of the attempts at treating the body that emerge at the heart of the city. Our approach studies the relationship between body, image and identity, within contexts of errancy, exclusion and drug addiction. Thence, our research reveals how this montage undoes and reinvents itself, through the subject's relationship to the map, the territory and the object. This articulation brings to light how new forms of subjectivation are expressed. These urban "heterotopies" are not only marked by the "object’s dominance" and the jeopardizing of the major signifiers' circulation - ones that express origin, filiation and myths. They are also marked by the invention of individual, cultural and collective logics of resistance. The way the subject inhabits topography testifies to the invention of a singular, plastic topology, of which we have observed some recurring aspects: support from the border; lonely rites performed in order to "close" the body and destined to protect the latter from the intrusion of the Other's jouissance; the "holing" of the urban space's Real in the hopes of "malleting" a place in the world; and recycling a "socializing" solution aimed at the construction of a pulsional topology. Such aspects relate body image and urban device
