Butcher, John Dudley, and mikewood@deakin edu au. "Lie symmetries of partial differential equations using symbolic computing." Deakin University. School of Information Technology, 2004. http://tux.lib.deakin.edu.au./adt-VDU/public/adt-VDU20051110.123208.

Abstract:
This study presents a theoretical basis for and outlines the method of finding the Lie point symmetries of systems of partial differential equations. It seeks to determine which of five computer algebra packages is best at finding these symmetries. The chosen packages are LIEPDE and DIMSYM for REDUCE, LIE and BIGLIE for MUMATH, DESOLV for MAPLE, and MATHLIE for MATHEMATICA. This work concludes that while all of the computer packages are useful, DESOLV appears to be the most successful system at determining the complete set of Lie symmetries. Also, the study describes REDUCEVAR, a new package for MAPLE, that reduces the number of independent variables in systems of partial differential equations, using particular Lie point symmetries. It outlines the results of some testing carried out on this package. It concludes that REDUCEVAR is a very useful tool in performing the reduction of independent variables according to Lie's theory and is highly accurate in identifying cases where the symmetries are not suitable for finding S/G equations.

Full text
Abstract:
Kurt Weill (1900-1950) began his compositional career in Berlin and left his legacy on the American Broadway stage. This study includes an overview of the influences of Lieder composers including Schumann and Strauss on Weill's first song cycle Ofrah's Lieder (1916) and the 20th century influences of Schoenberg and Stravinsky on his chamber music cycle Frauentanz (1923). This study examines how the Weill juvenilia employs diatonic melodies, mood painting, and the integration of vocal and piano parts emulating 19th century models. Next, this study presents ways in which Weill's Frauentanz displays 20th century techniques such as rhythmic texture, non-diatonic melodies, and semi-tonal instability. The Frauentanz vocal line is examined as instrumental in nature, adding textural importance to the interplay of the text with instrumental melodic motives. Kurt Weill's interest in vocal music and modernism directly influenced his legendary theatrical works. His traditional German musical training, rooted in counterpoint, combined with his melodic and modern ingenuity form the basis of the "Weill Style" of theatre music, for which he earned international recognition.

Abstract:
This paper introduces a musical analysis model which underlies an interpretative possibility of the Lieder - musical form resulting from the fusion of poetry and music - by Clara Schumann, German pianist and composer of the 19th Century. Her role in the musical scenario was quite relevant, since she held first auditions and thus disseminated the works of many contemporary composers, specially her husband, Robert Schumann. The analysis corroborates the high artistic level of these compositions, which bring into contact with issues related to the romantic period in a highly elaborated musical work. The included CD offers interpretation possibilities for the analyzed Lieder.

Hurst, Michael Shane. "Interpreting Richard Strauss's Der Krämerspiegel from the perspectives of the performers and the audience." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2007. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc3962/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this document is to examine Richard Strauss's 1918 song cycle Der Krämerspiegel in order to discern compositional intent and to address problems performers may face in communicating the work to a contemporary audience. Examining the existing literature, it is never clearly stated why Strauss composed such an anomalous song cycle that defied aesthetic and generic norms of the day. The premise taken in this study is that Strauss, who was litigiously forced to write the work in order to fulfill a contract with the publisher Bote & Bock, composed certain difficulties into the cycle to make it less marketable and thus less profitable for the firm. Furthermore, he commissioned a text that lampooned the publishing industry in general and certain firms and individuals in particular. Following a brief history of Strauss's involvement with the publishing industry, general considerations for interpretation are examined. The individual songs are then explored, keeping in mind the text's word play and parody, Strauss's use of self-quotation, and the challenges performers and audiences face when confronting Krämerspiegel. Finally, the individual songs are explored, and suggestions for preparation and performance of Krämerspiegel are given suggesting a more operatic understanding of the piece, especially given the cycle's relationship to Strauss's opera Der Rosenkavalier.

Abstract:
Full text
Abstract:
Beethoven is generally acknowledged to be the most important composer of the 19th century. However, many critics and musicologists dismiss Beethoven's Lieder as being of less musical value and sophistication than his more instrumentally conceived late vocal writings. The true musical sophistication of Beethoven's Lieder can be discovered by a careful study of the harmonic structure and the relationship between the vocal and the piano part in Beethoven's Lieder. In discussing Beethoven's Lieder style based on analysis, a number of aspects shall be examined: (1) the harmonic idiom and key relationships; (2) the role of the piano; and (3) other stylistic features.

Kaley, Duff. "Discovering Dallapiccola's Suleika in the Goethe Lieder." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31599.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores text-music relationships in Dallapiccola’s Goethe Lieder. Though the cycle is based on Goethe’s West-östlicher divan, it was Mann’s novel Joseph und seine Brüder that spurred its inception. This seven-song cycle revolves around Suleika, a character from the biblical love story of Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife. Dallapiccola set this text upon reading Mann’s novel, which stems from the same story; however, Mann portrayed the character of Suleika as a sympathetic lover rather than the traditional evil seductress. By conducting a thorough pitch structure analysis of each song, focusing in particular on motives, symmetry and aggregates, this thesis examines text-music relationships to demonstrate how Mann’s Suleika is musically represented. This thesis illustrates that Dallapiccola’s setting is a musical composite of both Goethe and Mann’s Suleikas and thus sheds new analytical and hermeneutic light on an important work by one of the twentieth-century’s most prominent serial composers.

Abstract:
When the tubist is first introduced to the bass tuba, Mahler's songs can be used as effective solo material. Through transcription, practice, and performance of art songs, novice bass tubists focus primarily on fundamental musical components such as tone quality, intonation, breathing, and musicianship. By identifying deficiencies in the current solo repertoire as related to the early stages of development on the bass tuba, I intend to address the need for more solo works through the transcription and performance of Mahler's Lieder und Gesänge aus der Jugendzeit.
