Valjakka, Minna, and Meiqin Wang, eds. Visual Arts, Representations and Interventions in Contemporary China. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462982239.

Full text
Abstract:
This edited volume provides a multifaceted investigation of the dynamic interrelations between visual arts and urbanization in contemporary Mainland China with a focus on unseen representations and urban interventions brought about by the transformations of the urban space and the various problems associated with it. Through a wide range of illuminating case studies, the authors demonstrate how innovative artistic and creative practices initiated by various stakeholders not only raise critical awareness on socio-political issues of Chinese urbanization but also actively reshape the urban living spaces. The formation of new collaborations, agencies, aesthetics and cultural production sites facilitate diverse forms of cultural activism as they challenge the dominant ways of interpreting social changes and encourage civic participation in the production of alternative meanings in and of the city. Their significance lies in their potential to question current values and power structures as well as to foster new subjectivities for disparate individuals and social groups.

Wijdoogen, Carola. 7 Roles to Create Sustainable Success. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789082949742.

Full text
Abstract:
Which roles and practices do you adopt to effectively guide businesses towards a sustainable future? And what skills and competencies do you need to establish sustainable transformation? In 7 Roles to Create Sustainable Success, Carola Wijdoogen shares the insights of 25 professionals around the world and her own experiences as Chief Sustainability Officer of Dutch Railways (NS), which she helped transform into a climate-neutral, circular and inclusive railway company. For example, the Netherlands was the first country in the world with trains running on 100% wind power. The innovative science-based 7 Roles approach is explained using an excellent collection of practices and anecdotes from (among others) Kate Raworth (Doughnut Economy) and CSOs of companies like Ingka Group, Levi Strauss & Co., Starbucks Coffee Company, Unilever Benelux, Microsoft, Kellogg Company, Interface Europe, KPN, Philips International B.V, DSM, AkzoNobel, Google, Tommy Hilfiger Global/PVH Europe, etc.

Chapman, Mark. Political Transformations. Edited by Joel D. S. Rasmussen, Judith Wolfe, and Johannes Zachhuber. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198718406.013.3.

Full text
Abstract:
Beginning with the French Revolution and the Enlightenment and their effects on the political life and systems of Europe, this chapter discusses the broader impact of the collapse of the political systems in Germany, the modernization of the regimes, as well as the attempts at restoration after the defeat of Napoleon. The author examines conservative and neo-confessional movements, as well as the increasing secularization of societies in Western Europe. Following the increasing success of nationalism in the Austrian, Russian, and Turkish Empires and in the Italian peninsula, the chapter traces its impact on the development of ultramontanism. Responses by Christian thinkers to political transformations are grouped under the three headings of accommodation, reaction, and escape. The chapter concludes by suggesting that the growing autonomy of both the political and ecclesial systems provided the background for the increasing irrelevance of the churches in the twentieth century.

Cheng, Russell. Box-Cox Transformations. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198505044.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the well-known Box-Cox method, which transforms a sample of non-normal observations into approximately normal form. Two non-standard aspects are highlighted. First, the likelihood of the transformed sample has an unbounded maximum, so that the maximum likelihood estimate is not consistent. The usually suggested remedy is to assume grouped data so that the sample becomes multinomial. An alternative method is described that uses a modified likelihood similar to the spacings function. This eliminates the infinite likelihood problem. The second problem is that the power transform used in the Box-Cox method is left-bounded so that the transformed observations cannot be exactly normal. This biases estimates of observational probabilities in an uncertain way. Moreover, the distributions fitted to the observations are not necessarily unimodal. A simple remedy is to assume the transformed observations have a left-bounded distribution, like the exponential; this is discussed in detail, and a numerical example given.

More, Ellen S. Transformation of American Sex Education. NYU Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18574/nyu/9781479812042.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Part biography, part social history, The Transformation of American Sex Education tells the story of Americans’ struggle to come to terms with their fear of talking about human sexuality—especially with their children—from the late 1940s to the present. Beginning with the life and career of Dr. Mary Steichen Calderone, known as the “Grandmother of Sex Education,” it explores the movement she launched that eventually yielded what is today known as “comprehensive sex education.” Calderone believed that sexuality is part of the total human personality and, as such, is something to be affirmed rather than denied; that one must make sexual decisions responsibly; that sex education must teach more than reproductive biology or the prevention of STIs; and that humans are sexual all their lives. The book examines the role of the organization she led, the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), as well as of Planned Parenthood, medical schools, public schools, and the liberal churches, in transforming attitudes to sexual health and sex education. It also analyzes the opposition to these efforts by right-wing politicians and conservative religious groups promoting abstinence-only sex education, and considers the concerns felt by parents on all sides of the issue. This book seeks to trace the origins of today’s conflicting approaches to sexual health and sex education.
