Abstract:
An overview of the diatom research in the DR Congo is given based on literature data starting in 1938 with the work of Zanon and excluding the East African Lakes as these were already discussed in previous papers. For each literature record the diatom genera mentioned are presented as well as all diatom taxa described from the Congo as new. In total, 106 new taxa were documented, of which Nitzschia with 40 taxa is far the most important genus followed by Navicula s.l. and Pinnularia and with 15 and 13 taxa respectively. Particular attention was paid to the local research of students found in unpublished theses at bachelor, licentiate, master and PhD level. Diatom records in these works are almost all restricted to genus level, although in the last decade an attempt to delimit species can be observed. This accompanies the renewed taxonomic interest in the Congo basin during the last decade. Renewed taxonomic interest can also be seen in the genera: the first period being situated during the lumping period, while more recent works follow the current taxonomic classification, for example Navicula s.l. versus Navicula, Cavinula, Craticula, Diadesmis, Geissleria, Humidophila, Luticola, etc.

Abstract:
The search for an enzyme as a reagent for selective bioanalytical detection of the neurotoxic amino acid, β-N-oxalyl L-alpha, β-diaminopropionic acid, β-ODAP (found in grass pea, Lathyrus sativus) led to its redox catalytic reaction by glutamate oxidase (GluOx). Homogeneous kinetic studies and an immobilized GluOx reactor-based flow-injection assay were initially made for beta-ODAP with small immobilized GluOx/catalase glutamate destroying prereactors. The method was applied to examine the toxin content in processed grass pea. The kinetics and the equilibrium of the thermal isomerization of β-ODAP to the nontoxic isomer α-ODAP established that GluOx is specific to the neurotoxin. The first ever GluOx-based amperometric biosensor for liquid chromatography (LC) detection was reported in 1997. This biosensor coupled with a refractive index detector improved LC performance. The most recent work with GluOx resulted in MnO2-based screen-printed amperometric biosensor, with offline elimination of glutamate interference by glutamate decarboxylase. A single-shot chemiluminescent sensor developed for hydrogen peroxide is also proposed for β-ODAP with GluOx application. This decade of progress resulted from studies that included four Ph.D. (Ethiopia, Sweden, Austria), four M.Sc. (Ethiopia, Sweden) and Licentiate (Sweden) theses projects, plus one collaborative project in Sweden. The advances in grass pea research may be regarded as a model north–south cooperation for research and education.

Abstract:
The enchantment by Botany teaching represents not an ordinary feeling among students, and even Biology teachers, at every educational level. Researches throughout the Botany teaching area point to a fragmented, decontextualized, quite theoretical and unattractive process. Therefore, in recent years, Botany has changed from a beloved science into a neglected science because of the botanical blindness that has been established in the general population. Thus, the present work aims to present a panorama of the academic researches about Botany teaching in Brazil. It was carried out of theses, dissertations, and articles published from 2002 to 2017. This period was intentionally selected as it fits the establishment of the Guidelines Curriculum for Biological Sciences courses. In parallel, the pursuit of researches on Botany teaching in other countries was also carried out, to verify the international scenario. The investigations were developed in CAPES, IBICT, and SCIELO portals, based on previously defined descriptors. The results, published in Brazil and in other countries, point out the lack of information and a valorization crisis of the scientific knowledge in the process of Botany teaching, both in basic and higher education. This finding gains strength especially when we check the publications of the Biological Sciences - Licentiate courses. These should present deep concerns with the process of teaching to teach, as the teaching roots are similar to the way we receive and comprehend it, which seems the reason Botany teaching ends up being relegated when compared to other areas of knowledge.

Abstract:
AbstractThis work aims to understand the space occupied by women in exact sciences and especially in Mathematics, as well as the challenges and possibilities for their teacher education. It is justified by the need to legitimize female participation in the construction of mathematical knowledge, to strengthen the insertion and permanence of women in Licentiate and Bachelor of Mathematics courses. Therefore, the qualitative approach research is configured as a literature review. The survey of productions was conducted at the BDTD, Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, and at Plataforma Sucupira, the guiding keywords for the search were Mathematics and women and resulted in 17 studies, including dissertations and theses. From the reading of the collected works and the identification of the relationships established by them, three axes of analysis were developed: 1. The trajectory and participation of women in the development of Science; 2. Insertion, initial training and female performance in Mathematics teaching; 3. Gender Relations in Mathematics classes. It was observed that a competitive relationship prevails in the field of scientific production that assure men the hegemony of knowledge, as it makes the legitimacy of female scientists unfeasible. In the field of Mathematics, persistent prejudice is often presented in a veiled way and leads women to deny their femininity to gain respect and support in the exercise of their profession. Even so, the presence of women in classrooms marks not only the evolution of society but also the opportunity to strengthen the teaching and learning process of Mathematics. Keywords: Women. Math. Teaching. Initial Formation.

I will successively discuss: (1) continuity and change in education; (2) the demythologisation of the idols and ideals of New Education (in German Reformpädagogik); (3) the discourse of the colonial educational initiative and (4) the sublime relevance of the irrelevant. Each of these four specifically chosen themes is consistent with one of the research lines to which I have adhered during my career, i.e. (1) the history of education (including Belgian education) in the strict sense (and with a focus on the internal organisation of primary education, the subject of my licentiate thesis, submitted in 1977); (2) the history of educational sciences (the subject of my second, special PhD, completed in 1989); (3) colonial and post-colonial educational history in the former Belgian Congo (the theme of one of our first books, published in 1995) and lastly (4) the theory, methodology and history of educational historiography (the subject of my first PhD, which I defended in 1982).

Abstract:
This article is primarily based on my experiences as professor of Education during the last years of 1990 and first years of 2000, being appointed professor in 1992 and becoming emerita in 2005. With a background in psychology and a licentiate thesis in this discipline I had to tackle the question of the relationship between psychology and education in 1969 when I left psychology for education as academic subject. During the period which I overview a number of new positions as professor, appointed as well as promoted, were important as were adjunct professors, recruited to bridge the gap between academy and society at the department. The two main tasks of a university, education and research, came to be in important ways related to a third task – the cooperation with the world outside the academy, We recruited important persons from abroad as doctors of honors, which improved the quality of research as well as the variation of content in courses. My own interest within what I prefer to name Educology concerns primarily childhood culture and the possibility to interpret its importance with the help of theories of socialization and knowledge formation, which in my case have an origin in psychology of perception and philosophy. What has happened at the department from 1969 (starting as a lecturer), via the appointment as professor 1992 and to my retirement 2005 is viewed from my perspective with focus on events that are of importance for my experience. I have taken up some important authors who are not always acting within the discipline of Educology, or even education, but rather important as challengers in a broader sense. I finish my article with a focus on future development, pointing out possibilities to broaden as well as identifying new important challenges, without losing scientific ambitions.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The transition to Higher Education involves significant changes. This study aimed to understand the main challenges reported by students entering the first year of a Bachelor’s and Licentiate in Nursing course at a public university. This is a qualitative research carried out with 78 students who participated in two de reflexão groups, one with freshmen in 2018 (n=38) and another in 2019 (n=40). These meetings were audio-recorded, transcribed and subjected to thematic content analysis. Emerging themes refer to social support, mental health and the high course load. Veteran students can form a significant support network because they have been through similar situations. It is suggested that the challenges narrated in a group can be appreciated collectively, avoiding a position of individual blame. It is recommended that the transition to Higher Education can be reflected by university management, triggering more inclusive and welcoming policies aimed at this public.

Abstract:
By applying the mixed research methods combining new historicism and digital humanities with AntConc-assisted distant reading techniques, this research aims to explore a reconstruction of Jakarta's history offered in From Batavia to Jakarta (1619–1999), a collection of poems by Zeffry J. Alkatiri. Results show that history can be reconstructed through the physical structure of narrative poetry represented by the dominant usage of pronoun "they" and intra-sentence conjunctions and prepositions such as "and", "in", and "the" instead of licentia poetica which can violate language rules. However, in the structural analysis, AntConc was not able to detect several linguistic aspects such as typography, figures of speech, metaphors, hyperboles, and personifications in several subchapters, so manual analysis was still required. Results show that the reconstruction of Jakarta’s history by Alkatiri revolves around four main themes, i.e. violence, the struggle against colonialism, Betawi and peranakan cultures, and Jakarta as a city, each of which is imbued with issues pertaining to identity, such as race, class, and urban lifestyle. This reconstruction also features the words "child" and "person" as markers of certain identities.

Abstract:
AbstractThe verdict in the case of Skatteverket v. David Hedqvist (Kokott, Advocate General (2015) Opinion delivered on 16 July 2015, Case C-264/14. ECLI:EU:C:2015:498. Available via TandF Online. https://doi.org/10.1080/20488432.2015.1096631.) is crucial for understanding how the EU treats virtual currencies, such as Bitcoin, in terms of Value-added Tax (VAT). This case involved the Swedish citizen David Hedqist who was seeking clarity from the Swedish Tax Authority Skatteverket on exchanging money for Bitcoins. The case set a precedent exempting such services from VAT under the EU’s VAT Directive (Council Directive 2006/112/EC (2006) On the common system of value added tax. OJ L347. Available via EUR-Lex. https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/ALL/?uri=CELEX:32006L0112. Accessed 3 January 2024.). Specifically, Article 135(1)(e) of the EU’s VAT Directive excludes those transactions from VAT that include money-related transactions, that include deals or negotiations about different kinds of money, including cash and coins that are officially legal tender, i.e., used for buying things, except for collectable items like special coins or notes that people collect but do not use as a means of payment. Skatteverket (Kokott, Advocate General (2015) Opinion delivered on 16 July 2015, Case C-264/14. ECLI:EU:C:2015:498. Available via TandF Online. https://doi.org/10.1080/20488432.2015.1096631.) clarified that cash transactions are not subject to VAT, even though they are considered services for VAT purposes.Despite this clarity, the evolving landscape of digital assets’ uniqueness, including Non-Fungible Tokens (Alawadhi KM, Alshamali N (2022) NFTs Emergence in Financial Markets and their Correlation with DeFis and Cryptocurrencies. Applied Economics and Finance 9:108. https://doi.org/10.11114/aef.v9i1.5444. Available at CORE. https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/524752899.pdf. Accessed 3 January 2024.), continues to challenge VAT frameworks across member states.Using insights from the European Commission’s Working Paper 1060, this article advocates for a unified approach tailored to digital and crypto services, addressing complexities in NFT taxation to reduce uncertainty and foster market cohesion. The findings highlight the importance of legislative changes and increased cross-border collaboration, as well as provide recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders in the digital finance and platform sector (European Commission (2024) Working Paper 1060. Available at: https://ec.europa.eu/info/publications/working-paper-1060_en. Accessed 3 March 2024.). By proposing strategic harmonisation of VAT enforcement, the research helps to improve tax compliance and support long-term growth in the EU’s digital market (Cappai M (2023) The role of private and public regulation in the case study of crypto-assets: The Italian move towards participatory regulation.
