Abstract:
As Cardinal Hugo and as pope, Gregory was one of the dominant figures in the history of the papacy of the High Middle Ages. Coming to prominence under Pope Innocent III, Hugo played an important political role, particularly as legate on various occasions, as well as being a major promoter of the new religious orders. As pope, his battle with Emperor Frederick II is one of medieval history’s most absorbing conflicts. But he also acted as peacemaker, promoter of the Crusades, instigator of mission for the sake of conversion, refomer of the Curia, patron of arts and liturgy, and as a passionate advocate of Church reform. His decretal collection, the Liber Extra, was the most influential of the Middle Ages. A full examination of Gregory’s pontificate is very long overdue. The current volume brings together a team of international scholars, each of them expert in dealing with a particular aspect of the pontificate, and provides what will be a collection of studies of lasting scholarly value on a central figure of the medieval papacy.

Abstract:
Workshop of Marine Litter (BAsuras MARinas, BAMAR) was born in the framework of VII International Symposium of Marine ScienceI(SMS 2020) as a response to current concerns about marine litter within both the scientific community and society at large. Marine litter is an urgent and highly complex subject that needs to be tackled from diverse and complementary points of view. In 2022, the workshop have a special focus on marine microplastics (MPs). BAMAR 2022 has been an open forum for exchange of current knowledge about the abundance, fate and impacts of plastic litter and MPs in the marine ecosystems. We aim to focus the directions of future research on MP pollution and to promote actions to reduce the effects of plastic pollution in marine ecosystems.

Giaimo, Paul. Appreciating Don DeLillo. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400613760.

Full text
Abstract:
An insightful work providing state-of-the-art critical guidance and informative commentary on the major novels of Don DeLillo in terms of how they respond to current social and ethical issues. Unlike the majority of American academic critics, author Paul Giaimo contends that Don DeLillo’s award-winning novels are fully defined by neither postmodernism nor modernism. To demonstrate this thesis, Appreciating Don DeLillo: The Moral Force of a Writer’s Work traces DeLillo’s style through his novels, showing how it evolved from a recognizably postmodern mode into a realistic treatment of contemporary, postmodern conditions. In this original and nuanced examination, Giaimo discusses themes that range from the devastating portrayals of evil in Mao II, Libra and Cosmopolis, to the good and inspiring confrontation of media stereotypes and urban missionary work in Underworld. The powerful vision of language in The Names and White Noise is examined as a potent moral force of the novels. Equally important is discussion of the cultural background Giaimo believes should inform any reading of DeLillo’s work, especially his Italian-American ethnic heritage and the American Catholic church of the 1950s.
