Abstract:
This paper deals with the exclusive sale contract or solus agreement. Its first part identifies some characteristic features of this type of agreement, which quite often is not only aimed at regulating the exercise of trade, but also serves as a technique of market organization and economic power concentration. The impact of the increasing currency of such commercial practices on the free market justifies consideration of the various forms of control that can be exercised by public authorities in order to preserve free competition. Control can be achieved through the judiciary applying concepts such as public order in civil law or public policy at common law. However, in view of the courts' reluctance to interfere with such instances of private economic power and their indifference towards the economic inequities inherent in such agreements for the distributor, legislative intervention has become necessary to protect the free market. Thus the Combines Investigation Act was amended in 1976 to allow regulation of commercial practices such as refusal to deal, consignment selling, exclusive dealing, market restriction and tied selling.

Abstract:
Central Bank digital currencies are a digital challenge to the international monetary and financial system. Since the development of cryptocurrency, such as bitcoin, the modern world has faced the possibility of digital technological transformation and providing a digital form of payment for the economy and the household. In addition, the announcement of a digital currency that would have a global reach, such as the Libre issued by the social network Facebook, raised questions about legal and regulatory safeguards, financial stability, and the role of the digital currency in society. All this influenced the leading central banks to recognize the need to conduct a detailed analysis of the possibilities of issuing digital currency of the central bank, which would be a supplement to the cash and non-cash form of payment. These analyzes include considering the advantages and disadvantages of that currency, determining its design and technological solution, as well as the necessary regulatory adjustments. In the coming period, we will witness a technological transformation in the operations of central banks, which, as before, should take care of preserving price and financial stability as its main goals, but also respond to new challenges of digital business.

Abstract:
Using an interdisciplinary approach essentially based on legal and economic sciences, this study examines the relevance of the consecration in Congolese law of the free holding and use of foreign currency in the Democratic Republic of Congo. On the one hand, it highlights the mosaic of texts that govern this issue and, on the other hand, dissects the economic impact of such a consecration regarding the evolution of the Congolese economy in recent decades. Given the almost always vulnerable nature of the Congolese economy, it advocates the free holding and use of foreign exchange, adequately framed by capital account regulations and a floating exchange rate "managed" through interventions by the monetary authorities, in addition to credit control instruments. Such a framework could thus contribute to reducing the negative collateral effects observed in the Congolese foreign exchange market with respect to the free holding and use of currency in the Congo.

Abstract:
This essay explores the organisational character of Facebook’s Libra currency by undertaking a critical reading of documents published by the Libra Association. Drawing on the conceptual work of Marilyn Strathern and Michel Serres, it illustrates how ownership cuts the network and encourages parasitism as a means of driving future profit. Central to this is the claim that Libra is not an exercise in democratising money, but rather, the opposite: Libra is run as a club, for the benefit of club members. The conceptual theme of 'cutting' is used to organise the argument. Rather than a cutting-edge technology, Libra’s true innovation is organisational and consists in overturning the decentralised character of blockchain, such that distributed ledger technology is re-centralised by big tech firms. Outsiders are thus cut-off from Libra; only those inside the club have the right to participate in Libra and its governance. This position also affords members an exclusive capacity to take a cut of the profits generated through Libra. As a private organisation, members have sole rights to future profits generated from the Libra ecosystem and are in this way incentivised to create new product opportunities over time.

Abstract:

AbstractThis paper examines the impact of Libra on volatility of Bitcoin using the classical framework of C. G. Lamoureux and W. D. Lastrapes (1990). ARCH and GARCH effects disappear when lagged ICO funding size is included in the variance equation. A negative association between volatility and funding size and the disappearance of volatility persistence (long-term volatility effect) suggest that Libra, as a dominant new currency, is likely to stabilize the cryptocurrency market and enhance potential for currency diversification. Furthermore, it is revealed that the stability cannot be ensured merely by backing decentralized blockchain instruments, such as Bitcoin, with bank deposits, government securities or exchange rate.

Abstract:
Blockchain and the commons are two concepts that are attracting more and more interest. Through different perspectives, these two notions raise a lot of hopes to transform our society and to answer the current challenges of social and ecological transition. However, there is little research linking them. Especially since the work that brings blockchain and the commons together remains essentially theoretical. Our work aims to better understand how blockchain can support the commons in real life situations. We explored several fields that embodied, in different ways, the role of a technology as a tool in the service of a collective purpose. We began by observing the key role of the blockchain in a commons that aims to produce and self-manage monetary creation (essay 1). To invest this first research field, we conducted a case study. In the following essay, we aimed to shed light on the role of blockchain as a tool integrated in a larger device for experimenting the data commons at the scale of a city (essay 2). This second case study was matured by the realization of a two-year expertise mission in a third place and finally focused on the European project DECODE. Finally, our last essay builds on the results of the first essay and explores how blockchain could economically support the commons as it disrupts the prospects of money through democratizing its alternative forms, facilitating its creation, and increasing the complexity of its design (essay 3)

This paper intends to test the validity of the interest rate parity hypothesis into the Brazilian context and, further, to investigate the main reason pointed in literature for the UIP rejection, whatever it is: the existence of a variant currency risk premium along the time. The classical Fama regressions view, applied to the cambial free float suggests rejection of this hypothesis when 12-month NDF contracts in Real Currency (BRL) are taken into consideration, identifying bias on the future contracts as estimators for exchange rate – it was not possible to obtain the same conclusion when working with 30-day USD future contracts dealt at BM&F. Once done the Fama regressions, it is applied into the Brazilian case the methodology implemented for developed countries by Clarida et. al (2009), in order to capture eventual relationship between volatility and excess of return in a carry trade strategy with Reais. As well as the results obtained off the international experience, it is noted negative correlation between volatility and excess of return of such strategy. From this conclusion on, Fama regressions are tested into subperiods, according to their respective volatilities. Periods of higher volatility were characterized for a Fama regression coefficient increment, once again aligned to the result obtained by Clarida et. al. (2009). Once the subject related to Fama regression is stressed out, we move onto the currency risk premium series estimative through the Kalman Filter methodology, applied to the 12-month NDF series, which pointed out a currency risk premium with positive average on the sampling taken into consideration – aligned with the intuition – but with dispersion measures highly elevated. The study remains trying to model the currency risk premium through a GARCH-M’s family model, being, however, unable to provide good estimative for the variable studied. A new chapter is started in order to introduce microfundamentation to the currency risk premium, bringing to the Brazilian case a method developed by Frankel (1982). The adherence of this model was low as well. In order to finish, it is presented a preliminary investigation about the relationship between currency risk premium and the presence of events considered rare into the PTAX series, following idea brought up by Rietz (1988) and expanded by Barro (2005). The Brazilian currency carries kurtosis that is superior to the other currencies taken into consideration on this sampling, thus indicating that the currency risk premium demanded in order to be positioned in domestic currency may be related to the recurrence of supposedly rare events.

This work’s main goal is the understanding of why the United Kingdom has not changed to the Euro. Secondarily, we addressed the British governments’ attitude towards the Economic and Monetary Union and the European Union politics’ effects on convergence/divergence of the British and Euro zone economies. The methodology used to fulfil the main goal consisted in an analysis of the commercial intensity between the United Kingdom and each of the following countries — Denmark, Sweden, United States of America and the Euro zone — from 1988 to 2007. We concluded that the commercial intensity is higher between the United Kingdom and the Euro zone than with the other chosen countries, even though the British and U.S. economical cycles are in synchrony. Given the actual strong commercial intensity between England and the Euro zone, a possible membership of the United Kingdom to the Euro zone would not create the expectation for additional commerce. Thus, the Euro zone seems not to be an Optimal Currency Area. In this context, the British authorities have neither economical motivation nor political willingness to accept the European Central Bank governance, which they consider inefficient.

The culture economy has become in the last decades one of the most important productive and social inclusion vectors on Brazilian economy. Among the public finance actions made by the government the main actions that support productive organization on the cultural groups are the Points of Culture network and the creative economy secretary, both related do the Minister of Culture of Brazil. Even the institutions that received public investments are showing difficulties in access in the local market create and maintain consumers have access and learn how to use information technology that is necessary to achieve economical sustainability. The development of collaborative management and learning virtual environments customized to these realities are only possible when these groups learn how to use free software tools in their internal activities. The study of the Produtora Colabor@tiva.PE in Recife at the Federal University of Pernambuco and the Universidade LIVRE de Teatro Vila Velha in Salvador, Bahia, part of this research execute an analysis about how this collaborative cultural producers got better results by adopting virtual environments. The participation of these groups in the CORAIS platform development community made possible that the existing groupware tools and develop new solutions as the public management of a local digital currency.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Over the last decade, the emergence of Complementary Currency Schemes (CCS) has shown a new promising innovative means to face big banks’ austerity, following the 2008 economic crisis. Given the diversity in their design and operational model, each one of them has a different goal and impact. This study aims to demonstrate the potential of a CCS in the transformation of a community, as they are considered to be currencies created by and for the general public. Moving from theory to practice, it takes as an example the local currency, the Bristol Pound. Launched in 2012, the Bristol Pound is mainly known as one of the most successful CCS in the UK. The local currency was designed with the primary aim to boost the local economy by creating a shorter trade circuit and keeping the money inside the city. Given the analysis of secondary data, the study focuses on the three sustainable development dimensions to highlight the Bristol Pound’s impacts. In addition, it will examine all the components of social capital to understand better how the local currency empowers it. This study can assist future or current managers of CCS with the development, evolution and strategic path they want to follow. It will help managers, intending to make a similar choice, to understand the best practices needed to make their CCS successful and enduring.

Abstract:
As Cardinal Hugo and as pope, Gregory was one of the dominant figures in the history of the papacy of the High Middle Ages. Coming to prominence under Pope Innocent III, Hugo played an important political role, particularly as legate on various occasions, as well as being a major promoter of the new religious orders. As pope, his battle with Emperor Frederick II is one of medieval history’s most absorbing conflicts. But he also acted as peacemaker, promoter of the Crusades, instigator of mission for the sake of conversion, refomer of the Curia, patron of arts and liturgy, and as a passionate advocate of Church reform. His decretal collection, the Liber Extra, was the most influential of the Middle Ages. A full examination of Gregory’s pontificate is very long overdue. The current volume brings together a team of international scholars, each of them expert in dealing with a particular aspect of the pontificate, and provides what will be a collection of studies of lasting scholarly value on a central figure of the medieval papacy.

Abstract:
This article surveys recent literature of comparative politics, searching for a clue to categorization of interwar authoritarian regimes in East-Central Europe among the sub-categories of authoritarian regime. Theory of authoritarian regime has revived since recent cases of transition from dictatorship fail to complete the process of democratization and political scientists began to refer these cases to authoritarian regime, rather than to diminished sub-types of democracy. After reviewing how interwar East-Central European countries were mentioned scantily in the classic literature of authoritarian regime (Juan Linz, Guillermo O’Donnell), it examines the theories of electoral authoritarian regime (Andreas Schedler), competitive authoritarian regime (Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way), one-party or hegemonic party dictatorship (Barbara Geddes, Beatriz Magaloni, etc.), and post-Soviet countries’ regime cycle (Henry Hale). In conclusion, it confirms that the naming of electoral authoritarian regime fits well, but we can maintain the characterization of authoritarian regime with hegemonic party system also. It criticizes the theory of competitive authoritarian regime, because this theory overemphasizes external factors and underemphasizes domestic factors, although it draws an explicit parallel between Central European countries in the 1920s and current authoritarian countries. The article emphasizes the importance of bringing a viewpoint of dynamism or internal logic into regime analysis and, methodologically, the importance of contextualized comparison in political science.

Abstract:
József Sipos was the supervisor of my thesis that analysed the activities of the Social Democrats in 1918–1919. Later, a decisive element of our teacher-student and increasingly friendly relationship was a multitude of our professional discussions about the revolutionary period, one of the central issues of which was the failure to build a democratic system in 1918–1919. József Sipos believed that one of the most important reasons for this failure was the fact that a worker-peasant alliance – historically been burdened anyway in our current terminology – could not be realized. Accordingly, his analyses focused on the conflicts between the workers’ and peasants’ parties, as well as on their relations to their own social bases. In this present paper, I focus on the assumption that the consolidation carried out by a worker-peasant coalition in the spring of 1919 was a political reality. I examine the activities of the social democrats and smallholders through a few nodes: (1) the relation to Mihály Károlyi’s political programme; (2) the rural expansion of the political basis and (3) the debate on the land system; (4) the relation to the interpretation of the revolution in connection with the government crisis of December and January; (5) the participation in Berinkey’s coalition government. Despite political tendencies towards a worker-peasant alliance, the difference between political identities between social democrats and smallholders represented a fundamental problem. As opposed to the emancipation marks, the identity of the social democrats remained revolutionary, while the smallholders fully identified themselves as an emancipatory political movement. The resolution to this conflict was the most pressing question in the event of a coalition that appeared to be a political reality. Elections to clarify the balance of political power were not held, the political shock caused by the Vix Note swept away the chance for consolidation. The revolutionary identity of the social democrats led to their involvement in the dictatorship of the proletariat.

Abstract:
Libra, Facebook's cryptocurrency, is expected to have an impact on the global monetary system; therefore, it is interesting to investigate Libra's adoption in Thailand. The objectives of this research are to examine the key factors in the acceptance of Libra and to gain an understanding of Libra. Logistic regression analysis was used for data analysis. The results indicate that Libra coins have not been accepted among Thais yet. Factors in influencing the acceptance of Libra are age, career, saving, social media, and knowledge scores. To encourage the adoption of Libra, the chapter suggests that gaining knowledge about cryptocurrency nationwide should be prioritised. Moreover, financial institutions should encourage the usage of cryptocurrency among low-saving clients and small enterprises as these groups tend to accept Libra rather than those with a large amount of savings. If cryptocurrencies are accepted nationwide, it might attract investors and boost Thai economic growth.

The retail sector has been experiencing a transformation in which the incorporation of technologies into the shopping process is becoming increasingly common, aiming to provide a better experience for consumers. In this context, this paper seeks to propose a solution that uses embedded hardware in shopping carts to enhance the shopping experience, primarily speeding up the payment process by allowing customers to scan the barcodes of desired products without having to face long queues. It also aims to provide a supermarket map, indicating the current position of the cart. To achieve these objectives, computer vision was used to recognize QR codes attached to the ceiling. Following this methodology, satisfactory results were obtained, with paths for improvement and possible changes to be made in the project to achieve greater accuracy in estimating the cart’s location.

Abstract:
The present paper discusses the impact of a new type of turbocharger, namely, the Active Control Turbocharger (ACT). The aim of this work was to prove the advantage of this type of turbocharger over the current state-of-the-art: the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT). This was achieved by carrying out a comparison between two commercial Diesel engine models (through the use of a commercial engine simulation software), which belong to the same family: one 10 litre engine equipped with VGT (originally) was consecutively compared to the same model of engine modified for ACT operation and through the integration of the ACT into the 81 version of the same engine in order to demonstrate the ACT’s downsizing capability. The study has been carried out for speeds between 800 and 2000 rpm, and a fuel-air ratio range of between 0.017 and 0.057. The results showed that the actuation of the turbine in ACT mode (through the sinusoidal regulation of the turbine inlet area with each incoming exhaust gas pressure pulse) increases greatly the energy available at the turbine inlet. This leads to an increase of the boost pressure at the intake of the engine by an average 30%. The specific fuel consumption was found to be similar throughout engine operating range with a penalty of up to 10% for the ACT engine of the same size (10 litre). A comparison was then carried out between the 10 litre VGT engine and the 8 litre ACT engine. The 8 litre has been found to produce up to 37% more torque and horse power under 1400 rpm and obtained very similar performance to the 10 litre VGT engine at higher speeds. At constant power output between the 8 and 10 litre engines, it has been found that the fuel consumption was decreased by a maximum of 9% when using the 8 litre engine. The results of the present study were encouraging with respect to the potential of ACT to downsize the internal combustion engine.

Abstract:
Abstract LiBr/Water absorption refrigeration cycle for automotive air-conditioning applications was simulated, studied and analyzed using ABSIM, a user oriented computer code designed for cycle simulation of absorption systems at steady state. This cycle would utilize the available combustion engine exhaust heat to supply energy to the generator. The design parameters and ambient conditions were chosen based on conditions under which automotive vehicles would operate in practice. Condenser and evaporator sizes and air-flow quantities were chosen to be similar to their counterparts in the current R-134a vapor compression cycle. The cycle would deliver up to 7 kW of refrigeration at maximum rated conditions. The COP is 0.72. It was concluded that generator temperature of 100°C is capable of producing the maximum capacity. Also, an exhaust temperature of 285 °C and flow rate of 0.046 kg/s are required to maintain a generator temperature at 100°C. Simulation results indicate that a satisfactory operation can be established in the high ambient temperature of 45°C with air-cooled condenser and absorber. Simulation results for the proposed cycle include temperature, enthalpy, flow rate, concentration, pressure, and vapor fraction at each point in the cycle. Also, For each component of the cycle, UA, NTU, Effectiveness, CAT, LMTD, and heat duty are presented. Global parameters such as COP and capacity are also given. Plots were generated to understand the effect of generator temperature on other components and on the cycle performance.

Full text
Abstract:
Multi-effect LiBr absorption chiller must take advantage of higher temperature heat sources to achieve higher COP so as to be competitive with lower first cost comparable commercially available, efficient electric chillers under current market pricing conditions. Yet a nominal conventional double-effect absorption chiller operating at a COP of 1.0 versus a comparable efficient motor driven centrifugal chiller operating at a COP of 7.0 will consume slightly less than twice the amount of prime natural gas (NG) source energy assuming a local 28% NG fired electric utility plant’s annual average efficiency and a 10% gas distribution leakage and 10% electric transmission loss to user’s meter. However if the COP of the above referenced double-effect LiBr absorption chiller were doubled, it would consume approximately the same amount of prime NG source energy and equally sustainable from an environmental impact standpoint. Consequently research to further improve double-effect LiBr absorption chillers beyond the VRA benefits reported to date was investigated in this study. Former simulation studies of a low differential pressure-vapor recompression absorber (VRA) reported in 2001 indicated a 7% COP efficiency gain, while additional simulation studies reported in 2006 indicated a 38% COP efficiency gain with the VRA operating at elevated differential pressures at the same upper stage concentrator temperature previously considered. Double-effect LiBr absorption chillers are limited by corrosion effects, which have been shown to accelerate significantly above 160 °C. In this paper, a reverse series flow, double-effect LiBr absorption chiller employing a VRA is investigated over a wider range of upper stage concentrator and absorber cooling temperatures but operating at the same low and elevated pressure differential levels reported earlier showed significant improvement in COP efficiency, capacity performance and projected hybrid operational cost.

Abstract:
Ice storage is currently the dominant cooling energy storage method. To more effectively utilize natural, renewable cooling sources, such as evaporative cooling and sky-radiative cooling, diurnal storage media operated on daily basis at the temperate range between 10 and 20 °C are the most desirable. In this paper, we presented our experimental investigation of micro-encapsulated paraffin slurry as cooling storage media for building cooling applications. The water slurry of micro-encapsulated N-hexadecane with a melting temperature of 18 °C were cooled to 5 °C and heated to 25 °C cyclically in a storage tank of 230 litre, and it was observed that full latent heat storage can only be realized at 5 °C due to supercooling, and the effective cooling storage capacity at the cooling temperature between 5 and 18 °C are obtained, which can be used to for cooling storage system design with various passive cooling possibilities.

In ASME 2011 14th International Conference on Environmental Remediation and Radioactive Waste Management. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2011-59122.

Full text
Abstract:
On the sites of Belgoprocess several thousands of drums containing conditioned legacy waste are stored. A significant number of these waste packages are 220 litre drums containing radioactive waste embedded into inactive bitumen. Most of the radioactive waste in these drums was generated during the development and production of MOX-fuels and the operation of the Eurochemic reprocessing plant. The current state of a number of these packages is no longer acceptable for long term storage. In order to make the waste packages acceptable for interim storage a repackaging process was developed. The process involves the repackaging of the waste items into 400 or 700 litre waste drums and a non-destructive gamma-ray assay (NDA) measurement performed on the new package. The aim of the NDA measurement is to detect significant quantities of fissile material in order to demonstrate compliance with the operational limits of the storage building. Since the waste items are destined for geological disposal, there is no specific need for a detection limit in the order of milligrams of plutonium as required for surface disposal. To meet this NDA requirement Babcock International Group supplied, calibrated and commissioned an open geometry system from its HRGS product range. The DrumScan® HRGS Solo assay system was delivered to the Belgoprocess site in 2009 after completing a series of factory acceptance tests performed in the UK. In May 2009 after successful completion of the site acceptance tests performed in Belgium, the system has been undergoing extensive testing and validation by Belgoprocess in order to demonstrate acceptance and compliance to the Belgian Radioactive Waste Agency, NIRAS/ONDRAF. After a careful evaluation of the qualification file, NIRAS/ONDRAF approved the system for operational measurements at the end of 2010. This paper provides a detailed description of the NDA requirement, calibration methodology, system validation tests and overall measurement performance of the system.

Abstract:
The Aero-Thermo-Mechanics (ATM) Department of ULB (Universite´ Libre de Bruxelles) is developing an original system to pump and separate a two-phase flow. Many applications need to extract a certain phase of a multiphase flow: oil extraction, flow in nuclear pumps, flow in aircraft lubrication systems, pulp and paper processing, etc. The main objective of this study is to obtain a lightweight, compact and efficient system that can both extract the gas of a two-phase flow and increase the pressure of the liquid phase. Prototypes with different designs were first tested at ULB on a specific test bench using water and air. The current prototype is a kind of axial-centrifugal pump. The axial part is used to separate the two phases of the flow and to collect, in the centrifugal part, the liquid phase only. The test results of the water-air prototypes have allowed to identify the key design and working parameters for efficient separation and pumping. A theoretical model has also been developed to describe the behavior of these prototypes. After successful tests with water-air mixtures, the technology has been implemented for a hot oil-air mixture. The tests with oil-air mixtures are performed on the aeroengine lubrication system test bench that the ATM Department developed and continues developing for other projects. At the same time, the flow field in the pump and separator system is being studied with commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software packages. Several two-phase flow models are considered for this particular application.
