Abstract:
The author examined the home pages of all 120 libraries in the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in order to compare design similarities and differences. This was accomplished by first filling out a questionnaire on each home page and then tabulating the findings using simple averages and medians. Areas examined were: backgrounds, document headers, document footers, document body, page length, number of steps to library home page from parent institution Web site, and domain name servers. A typical home page is discussed using the averages of these results.

Abstract:
Frustrated by the time-consuming process of updating subject Web pages, librarians at Samford University Library (SUL) developed a process for streamlining updates using Server-Side Include (SST) commands. They created text files on the library server that corresponded to each of 143 online resources. Include commands within the HTML document for each subject page refer to these text files, which are pulled into the page as it loads on the user's browser. For the user, the process is seamless. For librarians, time spent in updating Web pages is greatly reduced; changes to text files on the server result in simultaneous changes to the edited resources across the library's Web site. For small libraries with limited online resources, this process may provide an elegant solution to an ongoing problem.

Abstract:
Have Internet search engines influenced the way students search library Web pages? The results of this usability study reveal that students consistently and frequently use the library Web site’s internal search engine to find information rather than navigating through pages. If students are searching rather than navigating, library Web page designers must make metadata and powerful search engines priorities. The study also shows that students have difficulty interpreting library terminology, experience confusion discerning difference amongst library resources, and prefer to seek human assistance when encountering problems online. These findings imply that library Web sites have not alleviated some of the basic and long-range problems that have challenged librarians in the past.

Abstract:
Some academic branch libraries display a main library Web page as the default home page for their public computers. Others display a branch library page. In response to an inquiry sent to selected listservs, librarians from sixty-three academic institutions provided information about the choice and content of their default home pages. Although the numbers from the study do not clearly favor either choice, this paper, in summarizing the librarians’ input, provides insight into other available options and the considerations that contribute to maximum user benefit for a given library and library system.

Narsesian, Shant. "Football fans, their information, the Web and the personal home page." Thesis, City University London, 2010. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/12140/.

Full text
Abstract:
From the early days of the Internet to the present day, the World Wide Web has developed into one of the world's largest information resources. One of the first genres of web pages, which was also one of the first information resources, was the Personal Home Page (PHP). Over this same period of time, professional football in England has created the world's richest league and by extension an abundance of football related PHPs. This study investigates the role of the PHP as an information resource using the subject area of professional football in England. A holistic approach is taken so as to view the PHP from a broader context, as one information resource amongst many, including non-PHPs and even offline information resources (e.g. reference books). Within this study, football fans are interviewed along with web authors, surveys are carried out (by distributing both online and offline questionnaires) and research is also carried out online, examining football related PHPs and online web collaborations. Results suggest that whilst there are many informational benefits to be found on PHPs, such as plentiful unique information, they have low levels of use amongst football fans. The thesis concludes by proposing an avenue to the maximisation of the informational benefit of PHPs through a blueprint for a type of communal football website called the Club Community Composite Page (CCCP). Overall, several contributions are made to the field of information science, most notably attaining an improved understanding of PHPs as unique and accurate information providers online and devising new research methods for PHP research. In particular, the method of identification of PHPs developed here will be a useful tool for future researchers of PHPs. The contributions of this thesis are likely to be of value to researchers working in relevant sub-fields of information science, such as information seeking, web genres, grey literature and virtual communities.

Abstract:
The library profession is now heavily involved in providing access to information through library web sites and it is a challenge to design a web site that has reliable content and a user interface that is intuitive to those who use it. As web accessibility and usability are major issues in the design of library Web sites, this paper suggests that the design will be most successful when a usability analysis tool is used throughout the design and redesign of academic library web sites. The research drew on the literature of Human-computer Interaction and usability engineering examining best practice usability and accessibility design guidelines. It identified those guidelines that were relevant to academic library web sites. In order to establish the extent to which Australian academic library web sites met usability guidelines a usability analysis tool was developed and used to evaluate a randomly selected sample of web sites. The web sites were categorised under higher education institutional archetypes as suggested by DETYA (1998) and the results were discussed in light of these groups. The research found that there was no correlation of the usability of the web sites between the archetypes. In fact the pattern of usability was randomly distributed across all institutions, with the best and worst results appearing in each archetypical category. The study concluded that the web has provided a whole new start for all institutions and after examining the results, it suggested that the design of early web sites was not based on the size or the past history of the institution that it belonged to, but rather reflected those factors, already established in the literature, that faced library web managers at that time, when designing the library web page.

Following the path of the developing of Internet, library service has turned from traditional service to electronic service. Through web page, libraries display and indicate to their readers their service, policy and service procedures. As the integration of all library service, a homepage leads all readers to the pages that meet the demand of readers. As a result, library homepage design and information organization is important. With tremendous amount of service information, it is an important issue for libraries to choose what information to present on the homepage. This research adopts the research results from the Eyetrack III, Poynter Institute. It analyzes the homepage of twenty-six colleges inside and outside Taiwan. Also, a questionnaire is made with the analysis of the homepage for further understanding the demand of users. The following is based on the conclusions of the research: 1.At different stages, the most visible change of libraries in Taiwan is the titles of reference information and of research categories. The least is the users’ instruction. 2.The difference between the libraries in Taiwan and those abroad is the former focuses on the library information categories while the later in the reference service and research. 3.The developing trend of library homepage is as the following: (1)The information of reference service and research should be more important than library information. (2)Rapid and convenience data search should gradually replace the word-linked library resources. (3)To add “Research Assistance” and “How To and How Do I” on the library homepage. (4)To shorten the length of news. (5)To build a quick link list. 4.The reference for a library homepage design and structure: (1)Functional Menu provides a library homepage with a more concise and more convenience structure. (2)The basic element of a library homepage is the library information while the core is reference service and research categories. This research provides five suggestions: 1.Library should emphasize the core information and trend of homepage before design. 2.To make the most of the functional menu to effectively collect information of the same category. 3.To simplify data search process flow for users. 4.To shorten the length of news and to present it with a link. 5.To decrease the library information items set up by library, but increase items that user need.

Basson, Elizabeth Maria. "The usability of a computer-based Statistics Data and Story Library in the South African context." Thesis, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/26711.

Full text
Abstract:
Vista University is known in South Africa as a historically disadvantaged or black university. It is a multi-campus university (it has eight campuses throughout South Africa) and caters for learners from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics holds an annual meeting to coordinate the activities in the department across all eight campuses. Attendance is compulsory for all lecturers from all the campuses. Every year the same problem arises, which is to have examination papers drawn up that will be of a uniform standard across all the campuses. It is a very frustrating task for the compiler of the papers to get contributions from the lecturers that are submitted on time, in the agreed format and of an acceptable standard. During the 2000 meeting it was unanimously agreed that the long-term solution to the problem would be a database of questions in the agreed format and of an acceptable standard. Because the lecturers are spread over South Africa, this database must be available through Vista’s Intranet. The development of such a product would involve a great deal of time and energy, and the most important question to ask is whether the lecturers would use the product. The solution is to design a prototype of the product: a database with a Web-based portal populated with a sample of questions. The usability of such a database must be determined to ensure the effectiveness of the final product. The aim of this study is, after a prototype of a Web-based Statistical Data and Story Library in the South African Context (in future referred to as SSS) has been implemented, to determine the usability of the product. Abstract:
AbstractFundamental disciplinary differences may be traceable to the use of visual representations, with researchers in the physical and life sciences relying more heavily on visuality. Our goal was to examine how inscriptions are used by scientists in different disciplines. We analyzed 2,467 articles from journals in biology, criminology and criminal justice, gerontology, library and information science, medicine, psychology, and sociology. Proportion of page space dedicated to graphs, tables, and non-graph illustrations was calculated. A Visuality Index was defined as the proportion of page space dedicated to visual depictions of data and non-data information. An ANOVA indicated a statistically significant difference between disciplines, interaction between inscription type and discipline, with articles published in biology journals dedicating more page space to graphs. The significant overlap in inscription use and visuality indicates imperfect disciplinary demarcation, suggesting similar methodological and data analytic practices within a discipline and between subdisciplines.

Abstract:
La gelosa di se stessa is the fourth of the six melodramas collected in 1709 by Arcangelo Spagna and published in Rome (Domenico Antonio Ercole), as the third volume of his librettos, but its writing dates back to at least 1689, the date of a previous printed edition, shortly after the opera appeared on stage, a few months before at the palace at the Quattro Fontane of the Prince of Palestrina. It is not to be excluded, however, and this is dealt with in the first pages of this essay, the existence of still earlier editions, especially if we compare the two printed texts, already very divergent between them, and the two manuscripts, both at the Vatican Apostolic Library, to which the manuscript of the score must certainly be added for further problematization. The second section of this paper gets to the heart of the theme that interests us most here, namely the examination of Spagna’s adaptive interventions with respect to what undoubtedly represents its main hypotext, Tirso de Molina’s La celosa de sí misma. The analysis is conducted on the latest printed edition of the melodrama, to be considered as the version that the author wanted to pass on to posterity, as the authorized literary text, still intervening much compared to the previous edition of 1689 on which perhaps, being more linked to the stage event, he hadn’t had much control.

Abstract:
Libraries must increasingly compete as providers of information. Most, if not all, libraries now have a Web page that serves a variety of functions. Increasingly for some users the library web page may be their first introduction to a library. Furthermore, on-line use of library resources is becoming increasingly common. Accordingly an effective Web page design is essential. This chapter presents a Web page assessment tool, developed by the authors, based on a model used in the e-commerce sector. This tool was used to analyze the Web pages of libraries in the Australian Vocational Education & Training sector. The results clearly show both the strengths and weaknesses of Web pages. The lack of a standard method and guidelines for web page authoring is discussed.

Social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter can provide another opportunity for users to remotely access library resources. The creation of a library Facebook page provides the library with the ability to promote licensed databases and the information users need to remotely accesses those resources and course or electronic reserve materials. Twitter accounts provide libraries with the opportunity to keep users informed about changes to licensed databases, in other words, anytime they add or discontinue resources or there is a problem accessing them remotely. Another option is foursquare. Foursquare allows you to find your friends and discover your city or library. Libraries can use foursquare to introduce students to it resources and services. The library could develop a contest for users to earn points and badges by discovering information about the library such as, new books, databases or services. Social networks provide libraries and users with new ways to promote and provide remote access to licensed databases.

Abstract:
The New Jersey State Library has managed a successful print depository program for the last 55 years. In the mid-1990s, many state government agencies began putting digital versions of their print publications on their Websites. Initially, the agencies continued to send print copies to the State Library, but by 1998, more and more agencies were using their Websites as the primary venue for their publications. State Library staff initially responded to this change by creating a Web page with a browsable list of links to publications. Technological changes resulted in more state government publications being produced in electronic formats and the list of Web page links became unsustainable. This chapter discusses the State Library’s efforts to transition a successful 20th century print depository program into an equally viable electronic documents depository using very limited staff and no additional funding.

Abstract:
This study examines the content in CONTENTdm item level records and their aggregated metadata in WorldCat. The research ascertains some amount of loss of contextualization in semantic meaning of digitized primary resources. Data was collected from non-probability sampling of CONTENTdm item records selected randomly from CONTENTdm’s Collection of Collections Web page. The same aggregated digitized resources were retrieved in WorldCat, and the data was recorded and analyzed against the CONTENTdm records. Evidence shows that the value of the metadata is altered or ambiguous when the local field name is divorced from the descriptive metadata. Contextual meaning is lost when metadata is shared. In fact, the study reveals that the de-contextualization problem is two-fold: some inconsistent mapping from aggregated metadata and lack of clarity in the metadata itself.

Abstract:
Electronic information is gaining more importance in academic activities with the extreme change in the pattern of dissemination of knowledge. Web technology provides dynamism to the electronic documents that were not possible in essentially sequential style of presentation of printed documents. Interactive hyperlinks to related resources, links to full range of multimedia, links to traditional indexing and abstracting services, etc. are some of the novelties that are common place in a Web document and that were not possible in a traditional printed document. Web publishers or e-journal publishers claim heavy investments. Publishers create not only bit-map page image but also HTML and PDF formats to provide added advantages for their electronic journals. Electronic journals can provide linking citations and references to bibliographic databases or to full-text articles (where possible), links to graphics/photographs, video or audio clippings not included in the paper, links to corrections or to articles cited in the paper, access to more detailed data or to multimedia information provided by the author, links to external databases, links to reader comments or discussion forums related to the paper, “dual publishing” in more than one electronic journal (e.g. a chemistry article of interest to biologists could appear both in a chemistry and a biology journal), a “living article” where the user could log in at any time and see an experiment on an ongoing basis showing data collected that day, embedded software programs allowing users to mirror the authors’ work by manipulating data or running simulations based on their own input.

Abstract:
This study aims to present an exploratory study about the accessibility and usability evaluation of digital library article pages. For this purpose, four widely known digital libraries (DLs), namely Science Direct, Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineering Xplore, Association for Computing Machinery, and SpringerLink, were examined. In the first stage, article web interfaces of these selected DLs were analyzed based on standard web guidelines using automatic evaluation tools to assess their accessibility. In the second stage, to evaluate the usability of these web interfaces, eye-tracking experiments with 30 participants were conducted. Obtained results of the analysis show that article pages of digital libraries are not of free of accessibility and usability problems. Overall, this study highlights accessibility and usability problems of digital library article interfaces, and these findings can provide the feedback to web developers in making their article pages more accessible and usable for their users.

It is mainly an uPA inhibitor but it also inhibits the two-chain form of tPA.In order to determine the factors regulating PAI-2 gene expression and thereby clarify the physiological role of PAI-2 we have undertaken the molecular cloning of PAI-2 cDNA. A λgt11 expression library prepared from placental mRNA, was screened, immunologically using a monoclonal antibody probe developed against PAI-2 purified from human placenta. When 1.7×105 recombinant phages were screened six positive clones were obtained. Hybridization experiments and comparison of restriction enzyme cleavege pattern revealed that the DNA inserts of the six clones were, related. To identify the clones as coding for PAI-2, a lysogen made from one of them was induced, and the proteins were separated by SDS-PAGE. In immuno-blotting wxperiments the recombinant fusion protein and purified PAI-2 were recognized by the monoclonal antibody and a monospecific polyclonal antibody against PAI-2, revealing an immunological similarity. The nucleotide sequence of the largest cDNA was determined. It was found to code for a protein with extensive sequence homology with members of the serine protease inhibitor family (serpins) Alignment of the active center region with other serpins indicates that PAI-2 is an arg-serpin, as expected for an inhibitor of plasminogen activators.

Abstract:
Norway conducts operations on a variety of structures in the North Sea; e.g. oilrigs, monopole windmills, subsea trees. These structures often require subsea installation, observation, and maintenance. Research and technology that can improve the efficiency of these operations are of high interest to the nation. A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) can assist in these operations. However, the ROV pilot must observe and adjust the vehicle and its motion in accordance with its task, but modified due to impending forces. Automation of this motion is the desired goal. This paper researches the motion of an ROV induced by the motion of the robotic manipulators, motor torques, and fluid buoyancy. The research introduces a new method in engineering dynamics: the Moving Frame Method (MFM). Lie Group Theory and Cartan’s notion of moving frames are the foundation of the MFM. This research extends previous work in significant ways. This research accounts for the motor torques, fluid viscosity and the mass of the manipulator’s arms. Interactive visualization on hand-held devices is also an integral part of this research. The Web Graphics Library (WebGL) is a JavaScript API for rendering interactive 3D and 2D graphics within any compatible web browser without the use of plug-ins. This work visualizes the results, interactively, on 3D web pages, viewable on cell phones using WebGL. This work invites further research into improved numerical methods, solid/fluid interaction and the design of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV). AUVs beckon an era of Artificial Intelligence when machines think, communicate and learn. Rapidly deployable software implementations will be essential to this task. This paper demonstrates the MFM clears the path toward such technological innovations.

Abstract:
The arteriosclerotic lesion is characterized by myointimal proliferation. The pathological growth of SMC may alter the biological function of the overlaying endothelial cells. Thus we have found that HVSMC produce large amounts of plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) activities, which neutralize the PA activities elaborated by endothelial cells. Most ( 95%) of the PA activities detectable by reverse fibrin autography bind to heparin affigel at low salt concentration (0.05 m NaCl). Two peaks with PAI activities are eluted with a linear NaCl gradient from 0.05 m to 1.0 m. The first peak eluted at NaCl concentrations of 0.05 m to 0.3 m while the second peak was found in the range of 0.5 m to 0.7 m NaCl. Both PAI had an approximate molecular weight of 45,000 to 50,000 as estimated by SDS PAGE followed by either reverse fibrin autography or silver stain. The pooled fractions of the first peak did not bind 125I-thrombin while the protein of the second peak formed SDS resistant complexes with it like PN.The pooled fractions of the first PAI peak were further purified by SDS gel electrophoresis followed by electro-blotting onto glass fiber paper. Partial amino acid microsequencing demonstrated homology with the amino acid sequence of PAI-1. In addition, positive reaction with specific antiserum to PAI-1 was demonstrated in Western blots. Oligonucleotide probes were synthesized from the amino acid sequences obtained and PAI-1 gene probes were isolated from a human placenta cDNA library. Subsequently PAI-1 gene expression in HVSMC was demonstrated with Northern blots. These studies show that PAI-1 binds to heparin affigel at low salt concentrations which facilitates considerably its purification. In addition, the production of PAI-1 and PN by HVSMC may be of importance for the pathogenesis of thrombotic complications in arteriosclerotic vessels.
