Full textMany academic libraries around the world are allocating large portions of their budget to the provision of electronic books (e-books). While circulation statistics provided by the e-book vendors indicate that the e-books are being used, they do not inform the libraries of the reasons behind use, how they are being perceived and user satisfaction. In recent years, academics and researchers have been investigating e-book usage and user satisfaction at their respective institutions. This dissertation looks at e-book usage in academic libraries through a systematic review of the literature on research about e-books. Journal articles with subject matter concerning ebook usage in academic libraries in the United States and the United Kingdom were collected. Due to technological advances, only articles which had been published from 2004 to 2014 were collected. Other limitations of the study included language, solely using the literature to conduct research and the internet as a research tool.

This thesis uses behavioral mapping to analyze two contrasting spaces in Kansas State University’s Hale Library. One of the spaces is meant for computer use; and the other for general library use, including study-group work. The conceptual approach chosen to describe and analyze these two library spaces is the behavior-setting theory developed by psychologist Roger Barker, who defines behavior settings as independent units of space, with temporal and spatial boundaries, that have “great coercive power over the behaviors that occur within them” (Barker, 1968, p. 17). The behavioral observations for the two Hale Library spaces were analyzed and compared with findings from other studies of library usage and behaviors. In the first chapter of the thesis, I introduce my study topic and discuss recent developments in libraries. In the second chapter, I provide a broad overview of library history and library use. I also overview behavior-setting theory and present examples of research on behavior settings and libraries. In the third chapter, I discuss research methods for this thesis, starting with how library spaces can be described as behavior settings. I then discuss specific methodological procedures involved in the behavioral study of activities in the two library spaces. In the fourth chapter, I discuss the two spaces studied in Hale Library, first, describing their physical features and then discussing their behavior-setting attributes. In the fifth chapter, I present my behavioral observations and compare and contrast the two Hale Library spaces in terms of user behaviors and as behavior settings. In the sixth and final chapter of this thesis, I compare my research results with other library research and offer my speculative ideas on the future of the academic library. The overarching theme of this thesis is evaluating how recent digital technologies have affected libraries, and how traditional library spaces and spaces designated for digital technology can be integrated in future libraries.

Full textUniversity libraries in French-speaking African countries face a documentary supply challenge in a context of a lack of financial resources, an increase in the cost of documentation, and some inefficient organizational forms. This thesis aims at first, from surveys and collections of diverse data, to establish the state of the paper and digital documentary offer at the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar, in SHS, highlighting points comparison with other Sub-Saharan Francophone Universities. The results are intended to quantify and qualify this offer, to point out new dynamics in the context of digital documentation with different types of actors. In addition, librarians seek to rely fully on Open Access, both in terms of access to resources and the value of local funds. Digital information is increasingly seen as the best way to meet the information needs of the university community at Dakar's Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD). Nevertheless, it is often confronted with problems of access to information but also of use of documentary resources. This research focuses, in a second part, to appreciate the uses of digital resources, in a comparative way between several disciplines at UCAD and between teachers and students. Recommendations are made to try to improve the documentary services in this University

Full textSince the Sumerian period (4th - 3rd millennium BC), libraries have been able to process documents in order to make them available to the population for their intellectual, cultural and economic development ... ¶ To meet the information needs of all the socio-professionnal strata, they have taken various forms: national, public, specialized, scolarly, academic ... and this, in all the countries of the world.¶¶ With the rise of the web and the progressive access of people to online resources, the technical and financial partners of African countries began to help them, in the second half of the 1990s, to connect to the Internet. ¶This was also the beginning of various projects to create telecentres in order to popularize the Internet and to enable African populations to access information for their development. ¶These new structures (community or private) have been seen by many as the only source of access to information. In this context, libraries, with already meager resources in our countries, have appeared as obsolete, even useless structures. ¶ Documentary information professionals then began to question the future of their profession and libraries. ¶ In their reflection, the Internet has sometimes been perceived as a threat to libraries, as a technology like any other, or as an opportunity to seize in order to develop their resources and their know-how.¶Considering the Internet as an opportunity, however, requires librarians a new perception of their mission, a new organization of work, new products and services, and a new vision of relations with the public. ¶ This requires especially the appropriation of Internet and an active role in its use in order to disseminate your resources, facilitate access to those of others, promote your products and services, diversify, retain and empower your users in research and exploitation of resources ... ¶ Thus, the question arises of the role of libraries in the development of Internet uses and services.¶ Our study seeks, in the Malian context, marked by the extreme poverty of libraries, by the almost total failure of telecentres, but by a slight dynamism of other modes of access to the Internet (connection at the office, home connection, connection on mobile devices ...) to determine, analyze and understand the role of Malian libraries in the development of Internet usage and services. Realized in 39 Internet-related documentary units, it exposes Internet Mali (history, strategies, representations, uses), analyzes the role and positioning of libraries in the democratization of Internet and information resources access. Finally, it tries to understand whether the actions of libraries in bond with Internet are part of a clear and mature strategy

The paper shows the analysis writing result in Portuguese as Second Language, performed by the deaf in Brazilian sign language as First Language in networks. The aim was to analyse the verb usage in Portuguese phrasal writing structure as the deaf Second Language in networks. Take as a guideline: How do the Deaf who have Brazilian sign language as First Language employ the verb in Portuguese writing in networks? To answer this question, we go first to theorists whose work deal with Brazilian sign language, Portuguese, Portuguese writing, Portuguese as Second Language, verb, networks, writings and deafness, highlighting authors as Almeida (2007), Bagno (2011), Felipe (2013), Peixoto (2004), Quadros (2004, 2006), Recuero (2011), Zeni (2010), among others who discuss about the theme. In the second place, we gathered together a group in the net WhatsApp of about 20 deaf users of Brazilian sign language as First Language. That group took part in ―daily chats‖ about ordinary subjects in the network WhatsApp. Those ―chats‖ written in Portuguese were picked up from the above mentioned network and established the research corpus that was analysed under the Phenomenology standard experienced in two moments: graphic idea analysis and nomothetics analysis (abstract and unrelated ideas. From those processes arose five different rates of analysis: Verb in the Infinitive, Auxiliar Followed by main Verb, Verb with Oral sign, Unfit Verb and Unfit Usage and Inflection Verb. The analysed results showed: the network WhatsApp is considered a tool to help the acquisition of Portuguese as Second language, the deaf acquire Portuguese language as Second Language when they use the web, having in their writing a suitable verb inflection to understand the sentence and in their writings in spoken Portuguese as oral signifying. Starting from the understanding\interpretation that the inflection and finding attitude brought us, we suggest new studies in order to make closer the relation between. Brazilian sign language as First Language and Portuguese as Second Language so that the deaf can establish an interactive linking more proficient in the society that has Portuguese as First Language.

Full textIt is in the context of poverty or information exclusion that the massive dissemination of information and technology tools in Senegalese academic libraries responds to an urgent need for transformation and improvement of operational modes as well as modernization of services for different audiences, in particular students. Currently, in almost all academic and research libraries of Senegal digitization activities that crossed the rise of the Internet are being developed. This has created a real increasing effect of digital resources, by the establishment of means of creation and by expansion of access and of sharing of scientific and technical information in higher education institutions. The development of information technology and communication - the true vectors of documentary practices among Senegalese academic libraries users – together with the growth of digital resources, will inevitably turn the traditional relationship between students and libraries upside down. The objective of this thesis is, therefore, to study the transformation of the librarians’ profession, information culture of students, and their use of digital resources, with regard to sociocultural, political, economic, and sociotechnical contexts of Senegal; and in the context of the information society under construction. Thus, through this study, a prospective analysis devoted to the development and the emergence of libraries can be constructed

Full textThis research work is based upon the assumption that the ICTEs (Information and Communication Technologies for Education), Internet and other Information systems developments bring about a deep and fundamental change to the approach of the overall context of archive and documentation management in Africa. Our survey concerns the current development of information technologies in general and particularly the use of ICTEs in higher education in Africa, focussing on the mechanisms implemented at the School for Librarians in Dakar, Senegal, “EBAD” (École des bibliothécaires, Archivistes et Documentalistes de Dakar) and the way they are received by the African specialists. Such a significant digital upheaval necessarily implies new methodologies devised for “informational activities”, remote work and new know-hows in the processing, management, research and sharing of information. For that reason, African information and documentation specialists are now led to get involved and adapt to their new role of information mediators, which implies that they acquire and master new educational, informational, documentary and sociotechnical capabilities.This new role of African specialists is all the more necessary as the vast majority of our fellow citizens are illiterate (more than 60%, particularly in languages used by northern countries for the exchange of cultural resources and information).Now these capabilities can admittedly be acquired only by training; this is why we have set our goals through our three empirical studies: firstly, to review the current state of training in the African LIS, secondly by asking the specialists questions, to assess their practice of information and distance learning methods and to identify their own training needs. Thirdly, we are laying the base for the reflection on future prospects of jobs in the field of information / documentation in Africa, in complex and ever-changing environments

Full textThe increasing use of the internet in organizations and the abundance of information technology tools and applications are dramatically changing ways of doing business. In the education environment it is almost becoming impossible to activities including; research, teaching and learning as well as communication without the use of the network. Institutions of learning are increasingly changing academic resources and material into electronic form for the learners ease of access. These electronic resources (e-resources) have improved information retrieval and accessibility of quality academic material by both learners and their educators. As a result, academic institutions such as universities have invested vast amounts of money to make the best use of these e-resources. Notwithstanding these efforts, research shows that, students have made little effort to utilize these resources. The objective of this study therefore, was to identify factors that influence effective use of e-resources in higher institutions of learning. In order to achieve the set objective, a conceptual framework was developed from the identified factors which were considered to be influencing the effective use of e-resources. The study recommends that University administration should create effective awareness training programs that promote use of e-resources, provide sufficient internet connections, and design online library systems that are user-friendly to encourage user-interaction and effective usage.

Electricity expense is one of the fundamental tasks of property management. Activities, such as budget making and energy conservation programs, depend on the analysis on and estimate of electricity consumption. Most of the reference regarding the estimate of electricity consumption focuses more on the commercial and residential buildings than the other types of buildings. The traditional estimate method requires a large amount of historical data to construct the estimate model; also, it has to meet the correlation examine statistically. Therefore, the traditional estimate method has its limits. In consideration of the periodicity of electricity consumption in educational institutions, this research focuses on the library of National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. Based on the collected historical records of monthly electricity consumption from 2004 to 2006, the monthly electricity consumption of 2007 is estimated by using the time series regression model in combination with the Fourier series model and the electricity consumption average method respectively. By comparing the estimate results to the real electricity consumption, the precision of different models can be identified. This research uses sum of squares error (SSE) to determine the precision of models. The result indicates that Fourier series model (SSE=4.16×10^9) reaches a more precise estimate than the electricity consumption average method (SSE=5.15×10^9). Three data types (monthly electricity consumption during 2004-2006, 2006 and 2005-2006) are used to conduct the Fourier series estimate. The estimate based on the monthly electricity consumption during 2004-2006 is superior to the estimates based on the other two data types, which might resulted from a more accurate variation trend of electricity consumption reflected by historic data of a longer period. Also, the estimated optimized electricity consumption is used to calculate the floating electricity expense, which, compared with the real floating electricity expense, shows the error is 3.98%. The result could be a helpful reference for NYUST in budget making. This research is based on the Fourier series model and a relatively small amount of data to estimate the electricity consumption. Further study is required to deal with the variation caused by the stochastic factors and limits caused by insufficient historical data. Also, the development of operating platforms, such as VB, is suggested to facilitate related estimate.

Literature digital library is one of the most important resources to preserve civilized asset. To provide more effective and efficient information search, many systems are equipped with a browsing interface that aims to ease the article searching task. A browsing interface is associated with a subject directory, which guides the users to identify articles that need their information need. A subject directory contains a set (or a hierarchy) of subject categories, each containing a number of similar articles. How to group articles in a literature digital library is the theme of this thesis. Previous work used either document classification or document clustering approaches to dispatching articles into a set of article clusters based on their content. We observed that articles that meet a single user’s information need may not necessarily fall in a single cluster. In this thesis, we propose to make use of both Web log and article content is clustering articles. We proposed two hybrid approaches, namely document categorization based method and document clustering based method. These alternatives were compared to other content-based methods. It has been found that the document categorization based method effectively reduces the number of required click-through at the expense of slight increase of entropy that measures the content heterogeneity of each generated cluster.

Full textThe focus of this study was a small university library situated on the TUT Arts Campus in Pretoria. Since the library opened its doors nearly 20 years ago, little attention was paid to the interior and no alterations were implemented since then. Staff and students did not perceive the library as a positive asset due to the state of disrepair of its interior. As indicated by previous studies, redesigning a library interior has the potential to improve the learning environment it offers. It was hypothesised that the condition of the TUT Arts Campus library interior may have been a deterring factor causing students' reluctance to use it and that the redesign of the library's interior would have the potential to solve this real-life problem. This study involved itself with the process of redesigning the interior of the TUT Arts Campus library and the process of achieving the final design. The study dealt with answering the research question: How may one go about to redesign the interior of the TUT Arts Campus library, with the use of focus groups involving iterative cycles and user-based input, to increase student usage?

The questionnaire and the follow-up interview were used to collect data in this thesis. After analyzing these data, this thesis discussed the findings in three aspects: 1.The current situation of collections security in university libraries. 2.The usage and evaluation of library security systems in university libraries. 3.The applicability of RFID technology in collections security. The following shows suggestions based on the findings of this research: 1.The library should draw up a policy for collection security to build an integrated protection mechanism. 2.The library should establish the criteria to evaluate library security systems by writing a system requirement for proposal. 3.The training programs or courses of schools, organizations, and libraries should cover the issue on “collection security” to build up a fundamental cognition on it for librarians. 4.The libraries ought to keep the continuing interests in the researches and applications of RFID system and technology.

The school library is an important place that provides reading resources. To understand the the Rural junior high school library space usage. The main subject of the study is the library of Luming Junior High School and the participants are the users of it. First, the study points out the users’ real experience, feelings and demand for using school library space. Also, the author provides some suggestions on how to arrange library space from users’ points of view.The research methods used in the study are document analysis and questionnaires. The study finds out over 70% of users don’t have the habit of using libraries; over 60% go to the library during the break time; over 90% use traditional documents as resources. In terms of the exterior environment of the library, users think the library is too far away from the main teaching area and the entrance is not eye-catching enough. Next, as for the interior environment, the users think the area should be extended and the interior space should be used flexibly. Besides, in order to build up a warm, lovely, and friendly space, audio-visual teaching aids, the comfortability of reading place, and the leisure zone should be concerned.

In the past twenty years, most studies of elementary school libraries were about how the library was used. However, little research regarding why students would like to visit the library and what are their favourites in the library has been carried out. The purpose of this study is thus to understand the motives and influential factors of graders library use at school library. This study adopted the qualitative research in a semi-structured in-depth interview and a participant observation research. The interviewed objects are sixteen 3~6 graders who borrowed books or media frequently from the school library. The studies showed being curious, feeling bored, desiring to be recognized, seeking topics of their own interests, getting respect, finding fulfilment, enjoying leisure-time, getting better scores, getting virtual rewards, pleasing parents, and peer competition are eleven main motives that drive students to use the school library. There are some influential factors can affect the library use including library factor and non-library factors such as: the abundance and attractiveness of collections; the independence and distance of premises, the comforts of interior space; the equipments including network, light, air-conditioner, and audio-video facilities; the competence and friendly support of the librarian, the reading activities, and longer opening hour. Moreover, the schoolwork, the significant persons, the others etc. are also important. The analyses found that the function of the school library lies not only on reading, circulating and searching, but also being a place for leisure and social activities. That is a successful school library is not only a library, but also a living room at home. Ideally, the school should enhance the positive linkage between the students and the library as well as the librarian should be a facilitator to connect them. On the other hand, the librarian should encourage students read enthusiastically by making library as a warm, convenient, and comfortable environment. As a result, the student would like to be a long-term patron of the library.

Currently each of the domestic libraries is facing problems of constantly books increasing and continuously added service items, but the library staff can’t be accordingly increased due to the insufficient budget. The introduction of “Self-Check System” makes it available for the readers to complete the procedures of books checking all by themselves, and thus makes the circulation of books more efficient. Domestically, this kind of Self-Check System was introduced early before by many libraries. This study uses mainly the Delone & McLean(2003) revised Information System Success Model, supplemented with the Decomposed TPB, and also refers to the features of Self-Check System to delete those unnecessary phases, to construct the evaluation model for the library Self-Check System and the Usage Behavior. To design, the contents of questionnaires adopts the evaluation and suggestions from professionals; and using the empirical study method by allocating samples and issuing questionnaires to the readers who are students or faculty staff of WuFeng Institute of Technology and who have had used the Self-Check System; this study totally obtained 542 copies of effective samples, and the questionnaire returning rate is 46.32%. The analysis result manifests that besides the “stability” on system quality, the “malfunction rate” on satisfaction and the external influence on “teacher’s suggestions”, readers tend to be satisfied with the 3M model 7210 Self-Check System. Namely, the study result verifies the hypothesis, i.e., the “information quality”, “system quality”, “service quality” have positive influence to the “user’s satisfaction”; while the “external influence” has positive influence to the “subjective standard”; and the “subjective standard” has positive influence to the “usage behavior”.

A library exists for the users. In order to develop ideal functions and performances, what the users need and want should be provided by the library. The MSN real-time digital reference service (MSN reference service, for short) was launched by the National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) Library in August, 2007. After two years of practice, there are some ideas aroused. In order to understand the advantages and usability of this service, and the satisfaction and suggestions from users with this service, this study conducts the user questionnaire survey and content analysis to reveal the usage of and users’ opinions about this service. The objects of the questionnaire are those who have used the MSN reference service of NCTU Library, A total of 274 responses (78.1%) are collected. The close-ended questions are analyzed via descriptive statistics, Chi-square, Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Regression, t-test, One-way ANOVA. The response of open-ended questions were manually analyzed and subsumed into results. With regard to content analysis, 1172 transcripts are analyzed according to different aspects of usage and question types. The research findings can be summarized as follows: 1. The primary methodologies used to evaluate the usage of real-time digital reference service in libraries are content analysis and user questionnaire survey. 2. NCTU Library provides three kinds of digital reference services, which are E-mail, Web-form, and MSN. E-mail ranks the highest usage among all digital reference services of NCTU Library in the past and current years; however, the usage of MSN is soaring. 3. Many users of the MSN reference service are returning users. The number of returning users is more than one-shot users. 4. The primary reasons for the users to choose the MSN reference service are no time to go to the library and able to get answers quickly. 5. The primary channel for the users to know the MSN reference service was the Website of NCTU Library. 6. Dormitories are the main locations for the undergraduates to use the MSN reference services; laboratory and offices for the graduates and staff; off-campus for the non-NCTU users. 7. The primary advantage of the MSN reference service is easy-to-use. The primary disadvantage is the difficulty to express questions in text.. 8. Those who use the MSN reference service frequently have a high tendency to agree with this service. 9. Those who have used instant messaging for a long time and those who use the MSN reference service frequently have the tendency to be satisfied with the MSN reference service. Five suggestions are raised according to the research findings: 1. continuous promotion of the MSN reference service; 2. improvement of the reference interview; 3. continuous enhancement of the service quality; 4. regular evaluation; 5. assessment of the probability of activating the VoIP and Webcam mechanisms in the real-time digital reference service;

The opening of building in work space desired natural lighting will directly affect use effectiveness of light on the space. This research adopted national public information libraries as actual measured objects, using illuminometer and high dynamic range (HDR) photography for the measurement and analysis of luminous environment in various window types based on libraries in different window types and building seats in different seasons and sky conditions; finding out the connection between luminous environment and user behavior model through observing reader’s response to light distribution in various spaces. Additionally, light environment simulation conducted in actual measured space with physical simulation software shows the result in comparison with simulation and actual measurement that the feasibility of using light environment simulation when the design for the opening of building is irregular type. Regarding actual measurement of luminous environment, in the premise of same window size and location on the north side of building, uniformity of desk illumination will not be affected by season and climate, but distribution of desk illumination in other spaces is non-uniform, easily resulting in uncomfortable reading; additionally, part of the light will concentrate on the area by the window outward tilt, but most of the light will be distributed toward the ceiling. Therefore, direct light becoming diffused light through the reflection of the ceiling will be much available for user’s reading. Regarding luminous environment and user behavior observation, user even has significant feeling and response on large difference of change in short-term, but user’s habit has more feeling on the light changes than light distribution in the whole day. Regarding luminous environment simulation, the reason causing difference between simulated result and actual measurement may come from the factors that weather data cannot be used to accurately describe climatic conditions on the base and highly complicated distribution of the space. Irregular window size on the modeling will not affect modeling operation; however, window not located in vertical plane may cause broken hole on the model to affect simulation results. Therefore, this research come to a conclusion that architect should consider not only window type on the design of luminous environment, but also solargraphy through simulation software to analyze light distribution in different time, by which then can increase simulation result to be consistent with actual condition.
