Abstract:
We propose that emerging collaboration, or groupware, technology that supports synchronous interaction among students and faculty can add new aspects to the traditional distance learning and university course models. To explore this assumption we taught a masters' level university course using collaboration technology. In our approach, collaboration technology (integrated synchronous audio- and video-conferencing, electronic whiteboard and shared application tools) was used to provide students at universities in different countries opportunities to participate in interactive class exercises and discussions, and to do class assignments together. Students also participated in traditional, face-to-face class seminars, discussions and exercises at their local university. Thus students learned using collaboration technology and traditional methods. In this paper we describe the course and discuss students' evaluations of the course, their collaboration with each other, and collaboration technology used during the course. Students evaluated the course and their collaborative experiences very highly but reported unique challenges and had mixed impressions with respect to the technology. Challenges included establishing interpersonal communication and meeting commitments. In general, students judged collaboration technology lower than e-mail and telephony in characteristics such as social presence, participation and ease of use. However, there were differences in evaluations among students in Chapel Hill and Oulu implying cultural preferences. In addition, students reported varying degrees of productivity and variety of tasks afforded the technology. These differences were similar for students in Chapel Hill and Oulu, implying individual preferences influenced evaluation of the technology. These results appear to imply that students need to learn principles of collaboration in addition to the technology for collaborative learning across distances to occur, and that a variety of technologies are needed to accommodate cultural and individual differences among students.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to test Lotka’s law of scientific publication productivity using the methodology outlined by Pao (1985), in the field of Library and Information Studies (LIS). Lotka’s law has been sporadically tested in the field over the past 30+ years, but the results of these studies are inconclusive due to the varying methods employed by the researchers. A data set of 1,856 citations that were found using the ISI Web of Knowledge databases were studied. The values of n and c were calculated to be 2.1 and 0.6418 (64.18%) respectively. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) one sample goodness-of-fit test was conducted at the 0.10 level of significance. The Dmax value is 0.022758 and the calculated critical value is 0.026562. It was determined that the null hypothesis stating that there is no difference in the observed distribution of publications and the distribution obtained using Lotka’s and Pao’s procedure could not be rejected. This study finds that literature in the field of library and Information Studies does conform to Lotka’s law with reliable results. As result, Lotka’s law can be used in LIS as a standardized means of measuring author publication productivity which will lead to findings that are comparable on many levels (e.g., department, institution, national). Lotka’s law can be employed as an empirically proven analytical tool to establish publication productivity benchmarks for faculty and faculty librarians. Recommendations for further study include (a) exploring the characteristics of the high and low producers; (b) finding a way to successfully account for collaborative contributions in the formula; and, (c) a detailed study of institutional policies concerning publication productivity and its impact on the appointment, tenure and promotion process of academic librarians.

The system of Chinese postgraduate education of library and information science is comprised of doctoral and masterâ s programs distributed in mainland China, Taiwan and Hongkong. In mainland China, there are 9 doctoral programs of library science and 8 doctoral programs of information science, about 30 masterâ s programs of library science and 50 masterâ s programs of information science. In Taiwan, there are 1 doctoral program and 8 masterâ s programs. And in Hongkong, there is only 1 masterâ s program. Two main problems exist in the system, which are lack of authorization for degree award and qualification for professionals. The suggestions for improvement are proposed.

Abstract:
Objectives: The goal of this project is to: (1) identify key concepts public services workers need to know; (2) conduct a short training session with each worker; and (3) measure changes by a pre- and post-test. The training session focused on specific tasks that the worker may be asked to do in the course of their work. Methods: East Tennessee State University (ETSU) librarians created a written test that covered specific library resources, policies, etc. The test was pilot tested. Each of the 7 student workers plus 2 regular public service workers were given a 1-hour one-on-one training class. A pre-and post- training exam was given. The results were then scored on a scale of 102. Results: A paired t-test of the pre- and post-test showed a statistically significant difference at the 0.001 level. Conclusions: We have mainly used undergraduate students to "baby sit" our library's front service desk. If they can be trained effectively, their (and our) value to patrons increases greatly. Often they are the main contact with patrons.

Abstract:
The academic field of political science in Europe is studied in this thesis which examines the application of bibliometrics for domain analysis. It takes its point of departure in the domain analytic approach outlined by Birger Hjørland and Hanne Albrechtsen, which claims the study of domains as central for information specialists to be able to identify information needs in their fields of practice. Three features of the domain were studied by the use of bibliometric methods. Data was extracted from the Web of Science. Impact Factor was used to select 50 journals from each of the years 1999, 2004 and 2009. Only items published by authors with European addresses were included. Co-word analysis was used to study topics within the discipline and several kinds of citation analyses were conducted to examine citation patterns of the domain. Lastly core journals, authors and works were identified by the use of citation analysis and co-citation maps were drawn for the analyses.Several subfields within the domain, as well as some differences in citation patterns of the subfields, were possible to distinguish. The domain showed to be multifaceted, yet specific European research areas were identified. Some significant changes of the citation patterns were apparent between 1999 and 2009. In 2009 there were more references per article, journal articles were cited to a higher degree, relatively older publications were cited to a greater extent and the most cited journals received a larger share of the total amount of citations.The existence of a specific European domain within political science is discussed as well as the diverse characteristics of the subfields and their implications for the bibliometric methods. Finally suggestions are presented of how bibliometrics can be used for domain analysis within library and information science as well as by information service institutions.This paper is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.
Det akademiska statsvetenskapliga fältet i Europa studeras i denna uppsats, vilken utforskar bibliometrins tillämpbarhet inom domänanalysen. Den tar sin utgångspunkt i det domänanalytiska perspektivet formulerat av Birger Hjørland och Hanne Albrechtsen, vilket hävdar studier av domäner som centrala för att informationsspecialister ska kunna identifiera informationsbehov inom sina verksamheter. Tre aspekter av domänen studerades med bibliometriska metoder, data hämtades från Web of Science. Impact Factor användes för att välja ut 50 tidskrifter för vardera av åren 1999, 2004 och 2009. Endast artiklar publicerade av författare med Europeiska adresser inkluderades. Co-word-analys användes för att studera disciplinens ämnesområden, flera olika citeringsanalyser genomfördes för att utforska citeringsmönster inom domänen och slutligen identifierades centrala tidskrifter, författare och verk genom citeringsanalys och co-citerings-kartor skapades för analyserna. Flera delfält inom domänen kunde urskiljas, samt några skillnader mellan delfältens citeringsmönster. Domänen visade sig vara multifacetterad, men specifikt europeiska forskningsområden kunde identifieras. Några betydande förändringar av citeringsmönstren var märkbara mellan åren 1999 och 2009. Artiklarna från 2009 innehöll fler referenser per artikel, tidskriftsartiklar citerades i högre grad, relativt äldre publikationer citerades i större utsträckning och de mest citerade tidskrifterna tog emot en större andel av citeringarna. Existensen av en specifik europeisk domän inom statsvetenskapen diskuteras samt hur de bibliometriska metoderna påverkas av skillnader mellan delfälten. Slutligen presenteras förslag på hur bibliometrin kan användas för domänanalys inom biblioteks- och informationsvetenskapen samt av institutioner tillhandahållande informationstjänster.

The research deals with the pictorial language and the landscape paintings of the Brazilian artist Mario Zanini (1907-1971), and the connections with his private Library, constituted between 1930 and 1970, and later donated by his family to MAC USP, along with his artworks. The study traces the parallels between his artworks and his pictorial language, through three books of his Library (Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh and André Lhote). The study is also based on the analysis of the art critics Walter Zanini and Alice Brill. Nevertheless, the total set of 226 books of his personal Library and their identifications are listed at the end of the thesis, sorted by date of publication.

Abstract:
The aim of this two-years master’s thesis is to examine the role of the body and the importance of nonverbal communication in the library workplace and to explore the possibility of becoming more nonverbally skilled. For this purpose a course was developed and presented to nine librarians in a public library in the vicinity of Stockholm in February, 2011. Qualitative interviews with the librarians were conducted after the course. Important theories for this work were Annemaree Lloyd’s thoughts on corporeality, Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical sociology and John Dewey’s learning by doing. Theories concerning what communication and nonverbal communication really are were essential, as was literature that shows that nonverbal communication is an important aspect in the profession of the librarian. Nonverbal signals of importance in the library setting were identified as being mainly eye contact, smiling, bodily movement towards the library user, tone of voice, proxemics (spatial distances), chronemics (time) and haptics (touch). The study also shows that the design of the library and librarians’ worktools interact with the possibility to communicate nonverbally. The course consisted of exercises normally used in the training of actors. This was based on the theory of Erving Goffman. The learning process was an example of situated learning in that it took place in the library. It also gave the participants an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience of nonverbal skills with each other. After the course the participants were given questionnaires with questions about their attitudes and experiences of nonverbal communication and their view on the course. After a week a follow-up questionnaire was distributed, in order to find out if the course had in any way had an impact on their work performance. The investigation shows that nonverbal skills play an important role in the work of the librarian. Training in these skills has long been neglected, since they have for the most part been taken for granted. This study shows, however, that this kind of training is important. The librarians who took part in the course testify that the exercises gave them valuable practice. Nonverbal skills can be taught and learned: and “it is time to bring the body back into the information field”.

Desarrolla un estado del arte sobre el análisis de las investigaciones y reflexiones teóricas que se han desarrollado en la ética de la información (EI) y sus influencias en la evolución teórica de la ética en Bibliotecología y Ciencias de la Información (BCI). Para ello, se revisaron las principales fuentes bibliográficas sobre estas dos categorías (EI y ética en BCI), bajo el método cualitativo, el análisis descriptivo y documental de los estudios contemporáneos. Asimismo, se analizó las principales teorías/paradigmas desarrolladas por los más destacados autores del tema, como es el caso de Luciano Floridi. A modo de conclusión, se determinó que la EI tiene una estrecha relación en el desarrollo de la ética en BCI debido a que la primera otorga los fundamentos filosóficos, los conceptos como infosfera y agentes morales/informacionales forman parte de la construcción de los valores éticos y, además, es el espacio donde se presentan los dilemas éticos que determinan al profesional bibliotecológico. Se recomienda incentivar la investigación sobre este tema, ya que existe una preocupante escasez literaria.

Abstract:
Despite more than a decade-long process to transition aircraft maintenance practices from paper-to electronic-based systems, some organizations remain unable to complete this transition. Researchers have indicated that while organizations have invested resources in technology improvements, there remains a limited understanding of the factors that contribute to effectively managing technology-enabled change. The purpose of this case study was to identify and explore socio-technical (ST) factors that inhibit an effective transition from a paper-based system to an electronic-based system for aircraft maintenance. A conceptual model applying theories of change management, technology acceptance, systems thinking, and ST theory informed the research. Thirteen participants provided data via semistructured interviews, field observations, follow-up interviews, other documentation, and a questionnaire. Data were analyzed with open and axial coding techniques to identify themes, which were then crosschecked and triangulated with observation and follow-up interview data. Findings revealed communication issues, a fundamental misconception in training, and a false assumption that all personnel easily acquire computer literacy. Benefits gained from this study should assist maintenance, repair, and overall (MRO) organizations within the Department of Defense to improve current and future technology implementation as the research underscores real-life issues from a comparable organization. The implications for positive social change provide a greater understanding of technology-enabled change and contribute to the development of best practices for technology initiatives that address common ST issues in the MRO workplace.

This study explains the process of how Kista bibliotek, a library in Stockholm, evolves from being an idea to a running activity. The library is created in a time of change, both political and economical and is supposed to meet many different goals set from many different actors. The library is placed in one of Stockholm’s biggest shopping centres, Kista galleria and close to Kista science city which is an important midpoint for international businesses and science. Kista is also an area of segregation and socioeconomic problems and the library want to connect the different ‘worlds’ and together; the local people, businesses and the community create an environment which to be proud of. With new institutionalism as theoretical frameworks and with the use of qualitative interviews and unobtrusive observations, this paper shows how the original idea transforms throughout different levels of the organization. How the library evolves to be both traditional and progressive, how it meets the needs of the locals and work with the commercial environment to fulfil their mission to be a public place in the middle a commercial shopping centre. This study portrays a picture of a library which is moves between different organizational fields, between the private and public sector to achieve the goal of being a modern library in a modern world.

Abstract:
This study ascertains the attitudes of library school alumni regarding the value of including various competencies in an M.L.S. program in order to facilitate curriculum planning. A total of 736 alumni rated a list of fifty-five competencies. Twenty-five percent of alumni had been out of library school less than three years; 60 percent had been out less than ten years. The largest category of respondents is represented by public librarians (39 percent), followed by academic librarians (20 percent), school librarians (19 percent), special librarians (10 percent), and those in nonlibrary settings (12 percent). There was a significant relationship between the type of library course taken during library school and the type of library in which the respondent found employment. Childrenâ s and young adult literature was the most poplar â type of literatureâ course taken. The five competencies ranked most frequently as essential include: knowledge of sources, collection management skills, conducting a reference interview, communicating effectively in writing, and the ability to apply critical thinking skills to library problems. Rating of competencies was also analyzed by beginning librarians. Competencies valued also differed as a function of setting. Findings were compared to those of an earlier study conducted by the authors in 1987.

Abstract:
The advent of the internet has revolutionized the way scientists communicate their research results increasing the power to disseminate and to access scientific production. This fact was responsible to restructure the scientific information flow that has incorporated its own characteristics from the digital culture. The Open Archives Initiative constituted the infrastructure that supports this restructuring. It was also responsible for the institutionalization of a model called e-prints repositories (ER), that stores, disseminates and promotes scientific production, published or not, in a place managed by the scientific community itself, that allows the inclusion of their public commmentaries about contents of that production. The hypothesis of this work suggests that the adherence to this model by the scientific communities depends on the level of understanding and acceptance, of the profile of the field interfering with the adoption of the innovation and its legitimation. Through a case study of Brazilian researchers from the Communication Sciences field it had been carried out the electronic focus group technique among 18 researchers, whose profile was formed by researches leaders registered at CNPq with backgroung in the field. The exploratory study identified many questions present in the dynamics of scientific communication of the field leading to proof of the hypothesis. From among results, distinguish low perception of that this model optimized the scientific information flow and strong tendency to not accept the model becauce of field profile. In conclusion, the level of adherence to the model is inserted in a medium to low scale.

Abstract:
In 1972, the passing of the British Library Act formally brought to an end an institutional relationship between the British Museum and the British Museum Library, which had lasted for over two hundred years. Since its creation in 1753, the Library had, in its capacity as the national deposit, developed a range of services and an infrastructure, which centred on the acquisition, storage and preservation of material for the national collection. However, in addition to meeting its legislative responsibilities, the Library had, from the very beginning, made itself increasingly responsible for the organisation and provision of the national collection for a growing academic usership. This desire, to fulfill both the function of a secure repository and of an educational resource, had throughout its history, provided the Library with the majority of the practical challenges that it faced in its day-to-day operations. However, between 1972-2000, the internal policy documents of the national library, now renamed the British Library, indicate a period of significant change, in which this study asserts a radical reorganisation of the Library's services and infrastructure was taking place. This thesis sets out by asking what evidence there is to support the assertion of a radical reorganisation of the national library during this period. The reformation of the national library as an autonomous institution in 1972, and the lead up to its subsequent relocation in 1997, naturally enough serve as starting points for this enquiry, which goes on to examine the discursive practices and theoretical issues that accompanied the formation of the new British Library. The changes noted in this study therefore, chart not only the transition from analogue to digital library services, but also the increasing relevance of the central discourses of librarianship - the provision, storage and classification of information - to information science as a whole.

Over many years much academic research has been carried out in the field of library and information science (US) into the information-seeking behaviour of individuals, and many models and theories of such behaviour have been put forward. Similarly, over an even longer period, there has been much research in the field of communication stud ies, particularly mass communications, and a large number of models of communication behaviour have been described. The research described in this thesis sets out to build on this work, learning from both fields, in order to develop a more comprehensive representation of information behaviour. Existing models were analysed to identify important elements of information behaviour and from these the new Information Seeking and Communication Model (ISCM) was formulated. This is the first time that a model of information behaviour has been constructed in this way from a range of different models from both LIS and communication studies. The ISCM is more comprehensive in scope than previous models. Those developed in library and information science are usually concerned with the information user and information seeking, while those from communication studies typically focus on the communicator and the effectiveness of the communication process. The ISCM takes into account both information users and information providers, their separate contexts, the activities of information seeking, information use and communication, and factors that affect them. The ISCM has been designed as a generic framework capable of application in different environments. Its validity has been tested in health care, where it has been shown to apply to the information behaviour of physicians as information users and to that of pharmaceutical companies and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as information providers. Its practical value has been demonstrated in evidence-based medicine (EBM), where it offers in sights into the reasons why clinical practice does not necessarily follow EBM guidelines. It has also been found to be of use in identifying areas in which users (physicians) and providers (pharmaceutical companies and NICE) can improve their information behaviour in order to achieve their goals. This thesis contributes to knowledge by building on previous research and models to develop a more comprehensive model which provides practical insights into information behaviour and which has the potential for wide application.

With the advancement of information technology, national library websites have become an essential vehicle for their users to access official information and library resources. They serve the general public from different countries, age groups, ethnicities, and educational levels. The purpose of this dissertation research is to examine the usability, user experience (UX), and information architecture (IA) of national library websites in different countries. Focal areas of investigation include: (1) the primary content elements on national library websites' homepages, (2) the extent to which various quantitative measures of heuristic evaluation and IA assessment overlap with those measures from task-based usability testing, (3) the extent of the impact of cultural and national origins on participants’ assessment of usability of national libraries’ websites. The research design of this dissertation study features (1) a content inventory of 28 national library websites, (2) a web IA assessment and a usability evaluation of five national library websites, and (3) usability tests for three national library websites involving 30 participants. The key findings of this dissertation research help to establish a list of common content elements on the homepages of national library websites worldwide and provide a concrete, practical, and feasible procedure to evaluate such websites. The results show statistically significant differences in task performance with the use of national library websites between different groups of users, such as those from different genders and educational backgrounds. Significant correlations were found between the overall participant satisfaction of a national library website and multiple variables such as the content, visual design, and information architecture, as well as between heuristic evaluation scores and participants’ ratings of some aspects of the websites.

Based on the specific results from various phases of the research, this dissertation presented detailed recommendations that could help to make national library websites more usable for all its users, including the first-time users across different genders, age groups, and educational backgrounds. Furthermore, in order to achieve a high level of satisfaction, it is recommended that national libraries focus on six factors affecting participants’ satisfaction: the quality of information, the trustworthiness of the content, the credibility of the content producers/providers, the website’s overall structure, the design, and the aesthetics of the website.

Another significant contribution of this dissertation research is its use of various methods used to evaluate national library websites and its integration of the results of the different methods to obtain a broader and more comprehensive understanding of these findings. Future UX research on national library websites could expand the research by incorporating the methodology used in this research, testing a greater number of national library websites around the world, and involving users from all walks of life.

This study explores the information validation process of police investigators. The purpose of the research was to create a formal process model of the information validation process of a group of professional investigators. In this study I argue that the existence of such a model will help researchers in various disciplines by providing a baseline to which the validation process of other groups of information seekers can be tested and compared.

The study subjects consisted of 45 police investigators and data was collected using 4 distinct methods including semi-structured interviews, talk aloud sessions, a controlled experiment, and a Joint Application Design (JAD) session. The research culminated in a new process model of the information validation process of police investigators. The study also provides a new research framework for the future study of information validation processes of various groups of information seekers.

Several new discoveries emerging from the study include, but are not limited to, the findings that when validating new information, police investigator’s consider disparities between the behavioral, physical, visual, evidentiary, and potentially audible forms of information surrounding the information source and the investigator’s own personal knowledge base and experiential database. Other discoveries were that police investigators use their knowledge base and experiential database to create a virtual descriptive scenario or pre-disposition of what they expect to find before the validation process begins. They then use an abductive process through a questioning and information exchange process to test the details of their own scenario moving towards the best possible explanation of their observation.

In summary the study provides a new model of information validation illustrating the entities, processes, and decisions that comprise the process as well as the relationships, inter-dependencies, and constraints that govern it. Using professional investigators as study subjects provides merit to the model as a baseline or foundation to which we can now begin to study and compare the information validation process of other information seekers to the new model.

The role of the academic library has shifted from developing book collections to serving the information and technology needs of students and faculty. The needs of library users change more quickly and unpredictably than the needs of books, and library directors have pushed beyond the traditional incremental approach to library development to respond to changing needs. As many universities struggle to balance budgets, library directors must demonstrate the value and demand for library spaces and services to justify investments in construction and renovation projects. This study investigates the reasons that the new library space projects were undertaken and the forces driving decisions about investments in the library facilities. The cases in this dissertation present studies of three private, non-profit liberal arts institutions in the Eastern United States that have recently invested in major renovation or construction projects for new library spaces. At each site, interviews and focus group sessions were conducted with librarians, students, faculty, and library administrators. Archival material was researched to supplement the data collected from the subjects of the interviews. A multi-lens framework of strategic change is used to examine the forces and factors that influenced the decisions to pursue new library spaces in each case study. The institutions in the study successfully developed new learning commons and library spaces through renovation or construction projects. Each of the libraries in the study faced similar factors leading to a new space, including overcrowding, interest from students in collaborative learning, increased demand for access to technology, and the decline in the use of the printed book. The strong leadership of the library director, with support from the institution’s president, contributed to the success of each project in the study. The importance of this study derives from its examination of the changing factors and forces that drive the uses of new library spaces, highlighting the need to build flexibility into new construction projects.

The university library has been called “the heart of a university”, but in the past has been described as being “virtually unusable”. This exploratory study is an investigation into user experience and usability in university libraries in the UK, and aims to examine the difference between users’ experience and their expectations of using their university library. It will also investigate university library policies to determine how a user experience policy can help to improve users’ experience. A user survey was carried out at three UK university libraries, using a questionnaire which asks participants to give their current opinions on their experience of 12 usability properties, and then to rate their expectations of each of the 12 properties. This means that it is then possible to calculate the gap between how the users rate the usability of the library, and how usable it should be. Additionally, a website survey of 121 UK universities was undertaken to see which types of policies UK university libraries have in place, whether a policy for user experience factors exists at these institutions, and if so what the policy covers. The findings show the areas where the largest gaps between expectations and experience occur. One of the largest gaps at the three institutions concerns the adequacy of the information that users are able to retrieve, and this can be addressed by either improving the library’s performance in this area, or by managing the expectations of library users. The website survey of library policies shows that while there is a core of seven types of library policy, user experience policies are unusual. Library user experience and usability is undoubtedly a field growing in importance in the eyes of librarians and researchers. By taking the “lived experiences” of users into account, and doing this in conjunction with a user experience policy, the university library can become a place of continuous improvement.

Purpose: This paper examines William Stetson Merrill, the compiler of A Code for Classifiers and a Newberry Library employee (1889-1930) in an attempt to glean lessons for modern information studies from an early librarianâ s career. Methodology/Approach: Merrillâ s career at the Newberry Library and three editions of the Code are examined using historical, bibliographic, and conceptual methods. Primary and secondary sources in archives and libraries are reviewed to provide insight into Merrillâ s life at the Newberry and his attempts to develop or modify tools to solve the knowledge organization problems he faced. The concept of bricolage, developed by Levi-Strauss to explain modalities of thinking, is applied to Merrillâ s career. Excerpts from his works and reminisces are used to explain Merrill as a bricoleur and highlight the characteristics of bricolage. Research Implications and Limitations: Findings show that Merrill worked collaboratively to collocate and integrate a variety of ideas from a diverse group of librarians such as Cutter, Pettee, Poole, Kelley, Rudolph, and Fellows. Bliss and Ranganathan were aware of the Code but the extent to which they were influenced by it remains to be explored. Although this is an anachronistic evaluation, Merrill serves as an example of the archetypal information scientist who improvises and integrates methods from bibliography, cataloging, classification, and indexing to solve problems of information retrieval and design usable information products and services for human consumption. Originality/Value of Paper: Bricolage offers great potential to information practitioners and researchers today as we continue to try and find user-centered solutions to the problems of digital information organization and services. Electronic databases allow rural libraries to expand information access beyond the limits of their material collection. How are these libraries to know which databases best meet the needs of their clientele? Research done at the onset of this project revealed no previous studies on the ability of databases to answer real questions. In this study, public library patron questions received by the Arizona State Reference Center were searched on ten different databases recommended in William Katz's Introduction to Reference Work, 6th edition, and available through DIALOG Online Services. Given the limitations and exploratory nature of this study, the results indicate that of the databases tested, the set of Books in Print, Magazine Database, ABI/INFORM, PAIS, and GPO Publications could qualify as a set of databases that would enable rural public library staff to find sources for 90% of the patron requests for information not found within the library.

This study compare information flows in China and the UK with the example of pharmaceutical information. The general objective is to explore the relationship between information situation and the status of science and industry in a country. In China scientific information has long dominated information flows while in the UK scientific information in dominance has gradually been changed to industrial information flow in dominance (i.e. information work by, for and associated with industry). After background study of information communication environment and medicines research in China and the UK, scientific communication and S&T information flow are firstly studied, taking examples from pharmaceutical sciences. Then the thesis proceeds into studying pharmaceutical information flow which includes not only scientific information but also business information, drug information, patent information and statutory information. A systematic comparison has been carried out to describe pharmaceutical information flow infrastructure; wider system of the information flow; information flow performance; relations among scientific information, business information, drug information, patent information and statutory information; relationships among system (pharmaceutical information flow), wider system (national pharmaceutical industry), general information environment, and special environment "national drug situation/pharmaceutical activity". The industry's role in pharmaceutical information flow in Britain and China reflects the fundamental difference in the two countries' situation. In the UK, pharmaceutical industry playa central role in the pharmaceutical information flow. Some information are directly related to the industry such as S&T information, patent information and business information, some are indirectly associated with the industry such as drug information and statutory information. The big industry, big science and big information may reflect the UK situation. On the other hand, pharmaceutical information flow in China is mainly S&T information flow and is not closely linked with the industry. The less sophisticated pharmaceutical industry has a premature "nerve system"- information flow. The very limited industry involvement in R&D and therefore in information work reflects the little industry, little science and little information in China.

The aim of this project is to establish a desirable information environment adjusting to need and behaviour of legal professional in Korea. For this purpose, present situation of information sources in printed form and computerised systems were examined. Printed sources were evaluated based on commonly used criteria title by title. Operation of the two systems, LIRES and SCS, was described based on written documents and on interview with the system designers. Professional's attitudes toward legal information, information sources, and computerisation were surveyed. Responses made a distinction between groups of practitioners and professors to compare the results. Differences in attitudes towards library, information sources, and information seeking habits between two groups were identified. Capabilities of the computerised systems were analysed and compared with the potential users' needs and behaviours as found by the survey. Also, functions of the two systems were analysed by practical use of them, which was carried out by application of five legal questions to each system. According to the analysis, it was identified that the problem of search method which was a main factor of users' dissatisfaction with the printed information sources, could not be completely cleared up by the systems. For development of the information sources, improvement of search method of printed sources was suggested. Also, advancement of the two systems in the direction of utilisation of computer capacity for searching and of expansion of input data adjusting to potential users' needs was recommended. In addition, in order to maximise the use of the two systems, integration of them, by connecting them to the Dacom-Net, and then to the distributed database system as an efficient interface was recommended. The configuration required of such an interface was demonstrated by the example of an experimental system, CONIT.

Academic journals are one of the most fundamental channels of official scientific communication because they allow scholars to quickly exchange current research results and ideas. This exchange facilitates the accumulation and advancement of knowledge. However, as the amount of research literature increases, so do the number of academic journals and the fee for periodical subscriptions, thereby obstructing the dissemination of information. As a result, scholars are beginning to promote the concept of “Open Access” (OA), which allows more users to obtain academic resources without barriers, and aims to enhance the effectiveness of scholarly communication through the internet. With the increasing popularity of Open Access, the number of OA journals has expanded substantially, enabling a growing number of scholars to self-archive their published literature. This movement is of great interest to scholars in the field of library and information Science because they traditionally study topics related to the development of scholarly communication. How to create with the greatest research impact and shorten the process of scholarly communication are issues which LIS scholars concern. Therefore, the current OA development in the LIS field is a subject worthy of attention. This study intends to answer questions as follows: What are the characteristics of OA journals in LIS field? Are those journals covered by major databases? What are the OA policies of LIS journals? Who are key authors of OA articles? Do they self-archive their publications? What are their research impacts? This study resulted in four major discoveries. First, OA journals are mainly published in the United States, and primarily in English. Second, only about half the OA journals are covered in major databases, and whether a given journal is included in the databases or not is related to the location of publication. Third, most of the important journals and periodicals concerned with OA allow at least one form of self-archiving. Finally, not all authors of OA-related research self-archive every one of their articles. OA articles were cited more frequently, but there is no obvious relation between OA articles and its first time of being cited. Study results suggest that databases in the field of library and information science would benefit from give more attention to OA journals. In addition, OA journals should respond to the selection criteria of databases so that they can increase the visibility of their journals. Libraries should take efforts to promote the OA philosophy and provide tools for self-archiving, to organize OA resources for different disciplines, and to provide retrieving platforms for OA resources. Researchers should also be encouraged to publish more in OA journals or self-archive their articles in order to obtain the benefits of Open Access.

For centuries books, text, and literature could not be seperated from each other. Documents were distinctly delimited entities. In times of bitstream, World Wide Web, e-books, and digital text corpora the boundaries of documents as well as the concept of document ifself have become vague. Referring to literary texts as examples the thesis analyzes challenges and opportunities in current digital environments. The technical and conceptional developments of the last decades led to changing methods in humanities, publishing houses, and libraries. Libraries, once institutions which archived and provided books and therefore material objects, have to redefine their role and task in a digital world.

Abstract:
In order to determine the core group of journals to consider in developing the Library's collection of IAR, a bibliometric study about the use and production of scientific literature by researchers of the institution to which the library belongs is performed. From the analysis of references to papers published by researchers the obsolescence and usefulness of the literature are determined. By extracting keywords and authors the research fronts and the research groups working on these fronts are also determined, using the methods of analysis of co-occurrence of words, coauthorship and social network analysis. The results show a low obsolescence to the literature, a high preference for use and publish in two or three titles of journals in the discipline, and finally show the existence of two fronts of research within the institution.

Abstract:
In this work, the condition and the way automatization is used in University Libraries in Concepción del Uruguay, Entre Ríos are described. The integration of technological resources in the information units is an essential means for improving services, contributing to the creation of new jobs and enhancing decision-making. It is also an agent for bringing about changes in the information services which are provided by University Libraries. It is a descriptive study using the qualitative method, whose means for data collection is telephone contact, self-administered questionnaires and direct observations. The main conclusion shows a disparity regarding technological structures, human resources and poor involvement of staff in planning and management. Libraries with their collections, the important number of transactions handled and the chronic insufficiency of staff are the key areas where the application of informatics could produce more satisfactory results.

Abstract:
The main goal of the present research is to outline the theoretical and practical components that should be present in the construction of a conceptualization of the Librarian Social Responsability (LSR), in order to generally join it up to the area of libraries management. The pattern followed in this process has been taken from the statements given by the companies that works with the development of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The study group is formed by the two public libraries that are nowadays functioning in Provincia Cordillera- Región Metropolitana. It is concluded that the LSR concept is not recognized as a determined element inside the duties of these units; and, there is not only a lack of awareness about the topic in both polled institutions, but besides, clear evidences of development inside the oficial levels and organizations that belong to the national library community are not found. For this purpose a sort of mixed survey (open-ended and close ended questions) was applied that allowed us to recognize the uses through which in an implicit way the LSR concept is being used in the management of the public libraries in study.

Abstract:
In the context of knowledge management (KM) in the field of digital libraries (DL), communities of practice (CoPs) is one of the unexplored areas of interests for research, as compared with those in the fields of business and management, education, engineering and medical sciences. Greater importance is being placed on those communities on their ability to share knowledge, facilitate knowledge transfer and most importantly in providing the proper context for learning to take place. Thus, this research sought to: (1) find out the defining characteristics of CoPs in the field of DL, (2) examine on how CoPs‘ contribute to the development of a learning culture and (3) determine the success and hindering factors in the development of such learning culture. This study was grounded on an interpretivist philosophical view. Hence, the methodological approach of this study was qualitative in nature in which experiential or context-based data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Research sampling was limited to professionals who are actively involved in DL communities. These include DL designers, system developers, system administrators, librarians, academicians in DL educational programmes, graduate students and scholars having common interests in DL and its enabling technologies. The gathered data were analyzed based on Peterson et al.‘s five steps thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that DL CoPs take a variety of forms, has no definite structure and their creation is always dependent on the purposes for which they are established. Furthermore, results indicated that there is a strong culture of learning among DL professionals which is characterized by the four distinct cultures of practices – knowledge sharing culture, culture of collaboration, knowledge transfer culture and the culture of innovation. However, there are also critical success factors in creating a culture of learning as follows: human behaviour, organizational and technological factors. In contrast, the hindering factors or barriers include: attitude towards knowledge sharing, culture-related barriers or challenges, language limitation, and time.

Abstract:
Background. In most academic disciplines journals play an important role in disseminating findings of research among the disciplinary community members. Understanding a discipline's body of journals is therefore of grave importance when looking for previous research, compiling an overview of previous research and and in order to make a decision regarding the best place for publishing research results. Furthermore, based on Bradford's Law of scattering, one can assume that in order to be able to compile a satisfying overview of previous research a wide range of journals has to be scanned, but also that there are some 'core' journals which are of more importance to specific disciplines than others. Aim. This thesis aims to compile a comprehensive master list of journals which publish articles of relevance to Library and Information Science (LIS). A method to rank journals by their importance is introduced and some key characteristics of the disciplines body of journals are discussed. Databases indexing the disciplines journals are also compared. Method. The master list of LIS journals was created by combining the journal listings of secondary sources indexing the field's literature. These sources were six databases focusing on LIS literature: INFODATA, Current Contents, Library and Information Science Abstracts, Library Information Science Technology Abstracts, Information Science and Technology Abstracts, and Library Literature and Information Science, the LIS subsection in three databases with a general focus: Social Science Citation Index, Academic Search Premier, and Expanded Academic ASAP, and the listing of LIS journals from the Elektronische Zeitschriften Bibliothek. Problems related to editorial policies and technical shortcomings are discussed, before comparing: predominant publication languages, places of publication, open access, peer review, and the ISI Journal Impact Factors (JIF). Journals were also ranked by the number of occurrences in multiple databases in order to identify 'core' publications. The number of journals overlapping between databases are estimated and a matrix giving the overlap is visualized using multi dimensional scaling. Lastly, the degree of journals overlapping with other disciplines is measured. Results. A comprehensive master list of 1,205 journals publishing articles of relevance to LIS was compiled. The 968 active journals are mostly published in English, with one third of the journals coming from the US and another third from the UK and Germany. Nearly 16% of all journals are open access, 11% have a ISIJIF, and 42% are peer reviewed. Fifteen core journal could be identified and a list of the top fourteen journals published in Germany is introduced. Databases have between five to 318 journals in common and the journal collection shows an substantial overlap with a wide range of subjects, with the biggest journal overlap with Computing Studies, and Business and Economics. Conclusion. The aim of compiling a comprehensive list of LIS journal was achieved. The list will contribute to our understanding of scholarly communication within the LIS discipline and provide academics and practitioners with a better understanding of journals within the discipline. The ranking approach proved to be sufficient, showing good similarity with other studies over the last 40 years. The master list of LIS journals has also potential use to further research.

During the last two decades, mainly due to the huge increase of digital information accessible through Internet, user training by Higher Education (HE) libraries evolved from library instruction to elaborate information handling skills connected with student courses. Information Literacy (IL) has been defined as the set of capacities enabling an individual to understand when he needs information and has the skills to find, evaluate and exploit it effectively and ethically having learned how to learn. An international literature review demonstrated that IL instruction developments have being mainly taking place in HE libraries. Because IL instruction is a rather new development in Greek HE and relative research is limited, a survey including three questionnaires was performed with a main aim to describe how IL library instruction programmes are currently designed and delivered in Greek HE institutions which comprise 23 Universities and 16 Technological Educational Institutes (TEIs). Results from HE libraries showed that user instruction was offered by 77% of Greek HE institutions, while there were no course-integrated programmes or IL institutional policies. HE libraries employed various instruction techniques mainly targeting undergraduate and postgraduate students. Most libraries offered instructional programmes comprising basic library skills, while on average less than half of them included training on more advanced IL skills. In general IL instruction methods and content between University and TEI libraries were found to be similar. Instruction programmes were designed and delivered almost exclusively by librarians, usually not following any international IL standards, while in some Universities there was occasional faculty-librarian collaboration. Finally, Greek HE librarians considered that, although IL programmes are in their early stage of development, library instruction had a positive effect on the way students were handling information and listed course-integration and faculty-librarian collaboration as the best ways for the future development of IL programmes in Greek HE institutions.

Abstract:
The alumni who started their studies of Library and Information Science (LIS) in the years 1998 to 2002 in Leipzig have been asked in the course of a poll. This thesis starts with some theoretical specifications. These are the librarian’s profession in general, the LIS-studies at German Universities of Applied Sciences and the structure and contents of the LIS-study at the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig). The next part consists of the description of the investigation methods. The center of the thesis stages the results of the empirical study which was performed in May and June 2007. The most important results are data according to switching from being a student to being a young professional librarian. Additionally the alumni have been asked to assess the step of the LIS-studies in Leipzig with their actual practice. Also there were some questions concerning to the professional development of the alumni. After the description of the results follow a comparison with former studies at the HTWK Leipzig. The end of the thesis consists of a summary and the interpretation of the results.
