Karlsson, Alex. "Evaluating the State of Accessibility in React UI Component Libraries."

Abstract:
This work examined the state of accessibility in React UI component libraries. The accessibility of these libraries is essential since they are used to create the frontend of hundreds of thousands of projects. We conducted a controlled experiment to evaluate the accessibility of six open source libraries. We selected libraries based on GitHub dependents intervals to include libraries with varied use. In the experiment, we implemented a UI for each library with a few standard components. We then tested these UI implementations based on WCAG 2.1 and WAI-ARIA 1.1 with automated testing using Axe and manual test cases. We also used exploratory testing with the screen reader NVDA to detect issues based on actual use with an assistive device. We also conducted a literature review to support the experiment and the following discussion and conclusions of its results. We detected 50 accessibility issues in total and all libraries had one or more issues. Also, that there was a significant difference in the accessibility of libraries. The second interval had the least number of issues and was closely followed by the first interval with the most dependents. The two libraries selected from the interval with the least dependents had the most issues. We recommend developers not using libraries from the interval with the least dependents for public web products. Since all libraries had one or more issues, we also recommend developers choose libraries with care to ensure accessibility, WCAG 2.1 compliance, and follow WAI-ARIA 1.1. This work was limited to six libraries and a few components; there are many more of both. Another limitation was that the testing was limited to a desktop resolution and did not include mobile testing. Also, the work used the free version of Axe, and a paid version could potentially detect more accessibility issues.

De, Crescenzo Ilaria. "Synthesis of recursive state machines from libraries of game modules." Doctoral thesis, Universita degli studi di Salerno, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10556/2334.

Abstract:
2013 - 2014
This thesis is focused on synthesis. In formal veri cation synthesis can be referred to the controller synthesis and the system synthesis. This work combines both this area of research. First we focus on synthesizing modular controllers considering game on recursive game graph with the requirement that the strategy for the protagonist must be modular. A recursive game graph is composed of a set of modules, whose vertices can be standard vertices or can correspond to invocations of other modules and the standard and the set of vertices is split into two sets each controlled by one of the players. A strategy is modular if it is local to a module and is oblivious to previous module invocations, and thus does not depend on the context of invocation. We study for the rst time modular strategies with respect to winning conditions that can be expressed languages of pushdown automata. We show that pushdown modular games are undecidable in general, and become decidable for visibly pushdown automata speci cations. We carefully characterize the computational complexity of the considered decision problem. In particular, we show that modular games with a universal B uchi or co-B uchi visibly pushdown winning condition are Exptime-complete, and when the winning condition is given as a CaRet or Nwtl temporal logic formula the problem is 2Exptime-complete, and it remains 2Exptime-hard even for simple fragments of these logics. As a further contribution, we present a di erent synthesis algorithm that runs faster than known solutions for large speci cations and many exits. In the second part of this thesis, we introduce and solve a new componentbased synthesis problem that subsumes the synthesis from libraries of recursive components introduced by Lustig and Vardi with the modular synthesis introduced by Alur et al. for recursive game graphs. We model the components of our libraries as game modules of a recursive game graph with unmapped boxes, and consider as correctness speci cation a target set of vertices. To solve this problem, we give an exponential-time xed-point algorithm that computes annotations for the vertices of the library components by exploring them backwards. We show a matching lower-bound via a direct reduction from linear-space alternating Turing machines, thus proving Exptime-completeness. We also give a second algorithm that solves this problem by annotating in a table the result of many local reachability game queries on each game component. This algorithm is exponential only in the number of the exits of the game components, and thus shows that the problem is xed-parameter tractable. Finally, we study a more general synthesis problem for component-based pushdown systems, the modular synthesis from a library of components (Lms). We model each component as a game graph with boxes as placeholders for calls to components, as in the previous model, but now the library is equipped also with a box-to-component map that is a partial function from boxes to components. An instance of a component C is essentially a copy of C along with a local strategy that resolves the nondeterminism of pl 0. An RSM S synthesized from a library is a set of instances along with a total function that maps each box in S to an instance of S and is consistent with the box-to-component map of the library. We give a solution to the Lms problem with winning conditions given as internal reachability objectives, or as external deterministic nite automata (FA) and deterministic visibly pushdown automata (VPA) (6). We show that the Lms problem is Exptime-complete for any of the considered speci cations. [edited by Author]

Abstract:
The Work Group Survey (Bare, 1976) was adapted to investigate organizational climate in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (SSHE) libraries. The goal was to determine whether or not the APSCUF (Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties) collective bargaining agreement was perceived by the work groups as a cause of dysfunction. The Work Group Survey measured member characteristics, task dimensions, group structure and process, group effectiveness, and leadership. Seven items relating to the faculty union contract (CBA) were added to diagnose the effect of collective bargaining. Authorization to survey each work group was sought from the university administrator to whom the library director reported. Questionnaires, introductory letters, instructions, and stamped, self-addressed, return envelopes were then mailed to non-temporary librarians and library directors. Thirteen of the fourteen administrators gave authorization to send questionnaires. Of the one hundred forty-four questionnaires mailed, ninety-two (63.9%) or 58. 6 percent of the total population (N=157) were returned from twelve campuses. Ten of the twelve groups had greater than a 66 percent response rate and six (54.5%) of the eleven directors who were surveyed participated. Responses from ten groups were analyzed using SPSSx. Analysis to test Scheffe's, were used of variance at .05 level of significance was used the hypothesis of no difference between groups. Tukey's HSD, and LSD multiple comparison tests in follow-up analysis when the F ratio was significant. Homogeneity with Bartlett's Box F. of group variances was tested. No significant difference exists between groups on the CBA, polarization, autonomy, and initiation of structure criteria. Significant difference does exist for other criteria: task, group, leader, member, effectiveness, stratification, communication, team building, and boundary spanning. On the whole, the results are in accord with the hypothesis that the faculty contract is not a major cause of conflict within the work groups. Collective bargaining issues are symptoms of undeveloped or unrefined skills in communication, interpersonal or human relations, resolution, and leadership. Recommendations conflictto the Chancellor, the authorizing administrators, and to the work groups are: (1) to support and encourage growth and development in these areas, (2) for the director to be more aware of how others perceive his or her behavior, (3) for the group to consider themselves as a team and develop a shared view of their goals, and (4) that no change be made to the faculty contract without examining the survey results. The study supports earlier research conclusions that the Work Group Survey is a useful diagnostic tool.

The Internet affects many aspects of daily life and economic activity in globalized economies. The network city thesis posits that the Internet enables disbursed methods of production and new forms of economic activity. Existing economic geography literature concentrates on revenue generating firms. The concept of Cultural Heritage Cyberinfrastructure (CHCi) is developed in order to account for economic activities of nongoverning and nonrevenue generating firms, and is tested against the online activities of libraries. China, with its administratively homogeneous provincial library system and rapidly changing economy, is examined. The central government and provincial libraries are cooperatively building the National Digital Culture Network of China to provide information services to urban migrants and subsidize rural development efforts through CHCi. These projects are found to be more active in less-economically transitioned western provinces. CHCi is found to be a useful construct for studying non-governing, non-market segments of an economy.

Hunter, Cody. "Prison Notes: an Introductory Study of Inmate Marginalia." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc822765/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis introduces the study of inmate marginalia as a method for understanding inmates’ uses of texts in prison libraries and for understanding the motivations for these uses. Marginalia are the notes, drawings, underlining, and other markings left by readers in the texts with which they interact. I use the examples of the Talmudic projects to set a precedent for the integration of marginal discourses into the central discourse of society. Next, I discuss the arguments surrounding the use of texts in prison libraries, including an outline for an ideal study of inmate marginalia. Finally, I discuss the findings of my on-site research at four prison libraries in Washington State. After scanning evidence of marginalia from forty-eight texts, a relatively small sample, I divided the marginalia by gender of facility, genre of text, address of the marginalia, and type of marginalia and found statistically significant correlations (p < 0.05) between gender and genre, gender and address, gender and type, and genre and type. However, while these correlations are statistically weak and require further investigation, the statistically significant correlations indicate the potential for integrating inmate marginalia studies into the scholarly discussions regarding inmates’ interactions with texts in prison.

Abstract:
Magister Library and Information Studies - MLIS
The advent of the 21st century and its dynamic information environment have changed higher education considerably including the library spaces. Library patrons, namely undergraduates, postgraduates, and academics are placing heavy demands on academic libraries requiring support in research, teaching and learning. As a result, academic librarians globally have undertaken major re-evaluations of what they do and how they do it, to ensure relevance amongst their diverse user communities. The new information landscape is fraught with controversies that prompt opposing perspectives towards change acceptance amongst librarians. In Zimbabwe, academic libraries seemed to be lagging behind regarding changes presented by this information landscape. Given this context, the study sought to understand how librarians are adjusting to the 21st century environment against the expectations of the students and academics. The Diffusion of Innovation Theory crafted by Rogers (2003) and the McKinsey 7S model propounded by Waterman, Peters and Phillips (1982) were used as theoretical and conceptual frameworks. The research further applied a conceptual framework from the literature to determine the expectations of students and academics of the academic library in the 21st century. For data collection, the study adopted a case study design and a mixed methods approach using Web-based questionnaires, follow-up interviews and website content analysis. Data was collected from students, academics and librarians at three selected Zimbabwean universities. All data collecting tools were pre-tested amongst librarians, academics, postgraduate and undergraduate students prior to collecting data. Data collected using questionnaires was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel while interview data was analysed using thematic text analysis. Findings of this study revealed that the Midlands State University Library had to a larger extent embraced new trends which are in-line with the 21st century environment compared to the National University of Science and Technology and Lupane State University libraries. The Library and Information Science qualification remains important in service delivery among academic librarians. Inadequate funding, limited time due to multitasking, slow uptake of new concepts and limited knowledge and skills were barriers to keeping up with new trends amongst librarians. Academic librarians collaborated with academics in collection development, Information Literacy Skills (ILS) teaching and uploading theses and research papers into the Institution Repository (IR).

Ghuloum, Husain. "The utilisation of new ICT services in academic libraries in the state of Kuwait : an interpretive case study." Thesis, University of Salford, 2012. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26690/.

Abstract:
Information and communication Technology (ICT) holds the key to the success of modernising information services. Hence, ICT services impacted on every sphere of academic library activity as well as presenting an opportunity to provide value-added information services and access to a wide variety of digital-based information resources to their users. Today, academic libraries are using modern ICT services to automate their main functions, implement efficient and effective library cooperation and resource sharing networks, implement management information systems, develop institutional repositories of digital local content, and initiate ICT-based capacity building programmes for library staff and information literacy programmes for library users. However, innovative use of ICT services in Kuwait Academic Libraries (KAL) is not widespread and it is made difficult by several challenges, including lack of funds to sustain the ICT infrastructure, inability by library staff to keep up with the developments in ICT, quality and quantity of ICT facilities in the libraries, inadequate qualified staff to manage ICT services both at the strategic and operational levels, absence of institutional policies and strategies to support and guide the use of ICT services in the libraries. Hence, this study focuses on the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET), which is one of the most important higher education institutions in the State of Kuwait. The purpose of this research is twofold. Firstly, to investigate the main challenges facing the implementation of ICT solution in academic libraries; and secondly to develop a strategic framework for ICT implementation in academic libraries in the State of Kuwait. Multiple data gathering techniques has been used, including questionnaire, interview, observation, documentation, in order to thoroughly understand the phenomenon. The findings identify that there is the imbalance in the implementation of ICT services in the KAL libraries. The main reasons for this shortage are the lack of technological services, the lack of financial support, the lack of awareness among society regarding these libraries and finally, the lack of cooperation among the decision makers in the Ministry of Higher Education and the KAL management. To conclude, the results emphasize the need to better understand the importance of ICT in the academic libraries as well as highlight the need for decision makers in the Ministry of Higher Education and KAL to review and improve the current situation. Although the research is limited to academic libraries in the State of Kuwait, the study may be equally applicable to other academic libraries in many analogous developing countries

Abstract:
The continued publication of articles concerning drama and theatre in scholarly periodicals has resulted in the "loss" of much research due to the lack of retrieval tools. This work is designed to partially fill this lack by cassifying the articles found in fourteen current periodicals using Trussler's taxonomy. This bibliography could also be updated on a regular basis. The issues that are presently not available through the North Texas State University Libraries could be ordered, classified and appended to this work. In short, this thesis is a start toward the opening of the source material held by the campus libraries. But it is only a start. There is still a treasure trove yet to be developed.

Downey, Annie L. "The State of the Field of Critical Information Literacy in Higher Education." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2014. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc799537/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the state of critical information literacy (CIL) in higher education as it is enacted and understood by academic librarians. This qualitative study investigated the institutional support, nonsupport, and barriers to CIL programs and the effectiveness of experiential critical pedagogy for information literacy (IL) learning as taught and studied by 19 CIL specialists. Purposeful sampling was used to gather a sample of 17 academic librarians and two professors of library and information science who had previously worked as academic librarians. The sample included 11 females and eight males; 18 participants were Caucasian and one was African American. Data were collected through 40-60 minute semi-structured interviews and a brief demographic survey. Experiential education served as the broad theoretical framework for this study, which stems from the tradition of critical theory. This study was guided by the work of two major experiential learning theorists and theories: Paulo Freire and critical pedagogy and Jack Mezirow and transformative learning. Mezirow and Freire focused their work on adult education and grounded their approaches in critical theory and focused on power relationships, reflection, and the emancipatory potential of education. The findings were framed through a lens of Freire’s conception of critical pedagogy because it was the major theoretical framework that most of the study participants used to guide their work. Findings suggest that academic librarians who teach CIL do not learn about it in their MLS programs. They tend to use three major critical teaching methods, including student-centered approaches, discussion and dialogue, and problem-posing methods. Participants tended to struggle more with using critical methods than with incorporating critical content. Slightly more than half regularly used critical methods in their teaching, but all participants incorporated critical content, including critical source evaluation and subject headings and language used in information production and dissemination. The findings also suggest that CIL specialists are likely to believe that CIL is best taught within the broader context of academic disciplines and that strong relationships with faculty are crucial for successfully implementing information literacy programs of any kind, including CIL programs. Most participants felt supported by their library administrators and at least minimally by college or university administrators, even though they thought administrators did not have a clear idea of what they do in the classroom. The professional identity and culture of librarians and librarianship played a large role in whether and how librarians were drawn to CIL and in their ability to practice it. The results of this study will allow librarians and educators to make more informed decisions about how to design, teach, and implement programs and will benefit library science scholars and policy makers in terms of knowing how it is being taught and supported at the institutional level.

Stenström, Cheryl Lynn. "Factors influencing funding decisions by elected politicians at the state/provincial level : a case study of public libraries in Canada." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2012. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/59510/1/Cheryl_Stenstrom_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine factors (internal and external) that influenced Canadian provincial (state) politicians when making funding decisions about public libraries. Using the case study methodology, Canadian provincial/state level funding for public libraries in the 2009-10 fiscal year was examined. After reviewing funding levels across the country, three jurisdictions were chosen for the case: British Columbia's budget revealed dramatically decreased funding, Alberta's budget showed dramatically increased funding, and Ontario's budget was unchanged from the previous year. The primary source of data for the case was a series of semi-structured interviews with elected officials and senior bureaucrats from the three jurisdictions. An examination of primary and secondary documents was also undertaken to help set the political and economic context as well as to provide triangulation for the case interviews. The data were analysed to determine whether Cialdini's theory of influence (2001) and specifically any of the six tactics of influence (i.e, commitment and consistency, authority, liking, social proof, scarcity and reciprocity) were instrumental in these budget processes. Findings show the principles of "authority", "consistency and commitment" and "liking" were relevant, and that "liking" were especially important to these decisions. When these decision makers were considering funding for public libraries, they most often used three distinct lenses: the consistency lens (what are my values? what would my party do?), the authority lens (is someone with hierarchical power telling me to do this? are the requests legitimate?), and most importantly, the liking lens (how much do I like and know about the requester?). These findings are consistent with Cialdini's theory, which suggests the quality of some relationships is one of six factors that can most influence a decision maker. The small number of prior research studies exploring the reasons for increases or decreases in public library funding allocation decisions have given little insight into the factors that motivate those politicians involved in the process and the variables that contribute to these decisions. No prior studies have examined the construct of influence in decision making about funding for Canadian public libraries at any level of government. Additionally, no prior studies have examined the construct of influence in decision making within the context of Canadian provincial politics. While many public libraries are facing difficult decisions in the face of uncertain funding futures, the ability of the sector to obtain favourable responses to requests for increases may require a less simplistic approach than previously thought. The ability to create meaningful connections with individuals in many communities and across all levels of government should be emphasised as a key factor in influencing funding decisions.

Abstract:
Fewer than 8% of schools in South Africa have functioning libraries. There is no national policy for school libraries which compels School Governing Bodies and principals to have a library in their schools. This qualitative study, based on grounded theory, investigated ten primary schools in Gauteng that had libraries, or were in the process of setting up a library with the intention of providing a rich description of the issues and challenges facing these schools. The schools were chosen on the basis of location (Soweto and Johannesburg), and the school fees that were paid in a continuum from low/no fee paying schools to the fee paying ex Model-C schools. The resourcing of the school library, the operation of the school library and the role of the library were examined. The findings highlight the lack of a national policy, of school library posts, the theft of computers as a result of the lack of security, as well as the lack of understanding by teachers of the role the library in teaching and learning. Furthermore, there appears to be a disjuncture between the trends evident in the international literature on school libraries and what is actually happening in the primary school libraries in my study. Most significantly low/no fee paying schools with libraries were the exception and those that did have libraries were as a result of the enthusiasm and efforts of one or two individuals with the backing of the principal. Ex-Model C schools had the advantage in terms of the provision and staffing of school libraries as they had the funds to support them and, in some cases, a school librarian, provided that the principal supported the idea of a school library. In all the schools, the belief in the importance of the library regarding reading and literacy was the main motivating factor in establishing or maintaining the school library. A growing public awareness of the value of school libraries was an encouraging trend that emerged from my study.

This thesis uses behavioral mapping to analyze two contrasting spaces in Kansas State University’s Hale Library. One of the spaces is meant for computer use; and the other for general library use, including study-group work. The conceptual approach chosen to describe and analyze these two library spaces is the behavior-setting theory developed by psychologist Roger Barker, who defines behavior settings as independent units of space, with temporal and spatial boundaries, that have “great coercive power over the behaviors that occur within them” (Barker, 1968, p. 17). The behavioral observations for the two Hale Library spaces were analyzed and compared with findings from other studies of library usage and behaviors. In the first chapter of the thesis, I introduce my study topic and discuss recent developments in libraries. In the second chapter, I provide a broad overview of library history and library use. I also overview behavior-setting theory and present examples of research on behavior settings and libraries. In the third chapter, I discuss research methods for this thesis, starting with how library spaces can be described as behavior settings. I then discuss specific methodological procedures involved in the behavioral study of activities in the two library spaces. In the fourth chapter, I discuss the two spaces studied in Hale Library, first, describing their physical features and then discussing their behavior-setting attributes. In the fifth chapter, I present my behavioral observations and compare and contrast the two Hale Library spaces in terms of user behaviors and as behavior settings. In the sixth and final chapter of this thesis, I compare my research results with other library research and offer my speculative ideas on the future of the academic library. The overarching theme of this thesis is evaluating how recent digital technologies have affected libraries, and how traditional library spaces and spaces designated for digital technology can be integrated in future libraries.

It was envisaged that through this study the perceptions, feelings and views of students in as far as their needs satisfaction could be illuminated. The study addressed the following concerns: Apart from the physical and other library resources, are there other mechanisms of evaluating the quality of services an academic library has to offer? In order for an academic library to improve service quality, what role should clients play? What are their concerns about their information needs consideration and what other possible means can be done to satisfy those needs?

Abstract:
State digital libraries are manifestations of the diffusion of technology that has provided both access to and delivery of digital content. Whether the content is being accessed and used equitably in K-12 schools has not been assessed. Determining patterns of the diffusion of use across socioeconomic groups in K-12 schools may help measure the success of existing efforts to provide equitable access and use of digital content, and help guide policies and implementation to more effectively address remaining disparities. This study examined use of the Connecticut Digital Library (ICONN) in K-12 schools in Connecticut by determining annual patterns of use per school/district over a four-year period, using transaction log search statistics. The data were analyzed in the paradigm that Rogers (2003) describes as the first and second dimensions of the consequences of an innovation - the overall growth and the equality of the diffusion to individuals within an intended audience --- in this case, students in K-12 schools. Data were compared by school district and the established socioeconomic District Reference Groups (DRGs) defined by the Connecticut State Board of Education. At the time of this study, ICONN used aggregate data (total searches) for K-12 schools, but did not have relevant data on diffusion within the public schools in Connecticut related to district or DRGs.

Abstract:
Information and communication technologies (lCTs) are increasingly changing the way in which working, learning, doing research and administrations are carried out. ICTs have the changed natute of many academic, public and organisations libraries. Health service is an important and essential element of any modern society. Therefore, development of this service and updating its services is a priority for most of modern governments. Current developments in ICTs are changing the nature of health science libraries. Therefore research in this area is important to provide guidelines, recommendations to improve the health services. This study explores the impact of ICTs in Hamad Health Science Library in Qatar. Physicians and staff in the Hamad Medical Corporation were surveyed by questionnaire to identify the use of ICTs and their effect on them. Then personal interviews detertnined their perceptions of the impact on the research productivity of end-users. There is a lack of this type of study in the literature. Those that there are specifically address the impact of ICTs in health science library. ICTs have become a major link to health care resources for many health care workers. The study employs a systems methodological approach in order to better understand the impact and value of ICTs in Hamad Health Sciences Library (HHSL). Using the systems intervention, issues that affect the system were identified (technological issues, cooperation issues, cultural issues and staff (and user) training and development) and the problem situation improved. An ordered roadmap of elements necessary to bring about change was produced and a HHSL systems model constructed to understand the change processes in context. Conclusions drawn reflect the level of success of the aims and objectives and indicate ways in which the problem situation can be improved from a systemic standpoint. Recommendations to management include aspects associated with operational planning, policy objectives and strategic formulation.

The purpose of this study was to explore students' perceptions of library services offered at Walters State Community College. This research involved LibQUAL+™, a nationally known academic library assessment instrument that measures three dimensions on a scale of approximately 22 aspects of service, divided into 6 groups (Heath, Kyrillidou, & Askew, 2004, p.264). These 3 dimensions are the following: Affect of Service (AS), Information Control (IC), and Library as a Place (LP). Responses of 666 students at Walters State Community College, Morristown, Tennessee, indicated the students' perceptions of acceptable minimum level of service, perceived levels of service, and desired levels of service. Each dimension was assessed by mean scores and p values to determine students' level of satisfaction with the library. Independent samples t tests were conducted to analyze the association between perceived means of the 3 service quality dimensions for the following: (1) Walters State Community College compared to 4 other community colleges, (2) male and female students at Walters State Community College, (3) traditional students 22 years old and younger and nontraditional students over age 22 at Walters State Community College. Pearson's correlation was conducted to analyze the relationship between library budgets and library services. Based on the findings of this study, Walters State Community College Library's mean scores were higher than the other 4 community college's in the 3 service quality dimensions. However, Walters State Community College's results indicated substantial room for improvement in the Affect of Service dimension. The mean scores between male and female students at Walters State College showed no differences among the 3 service quality dimensions. The findings also indicated that nontraditional students over age 22 rated Affect of Service and Information Control higher than did traditional students age 22 and younger. In addition, findings indicated a fairly strong relationship between library budget and the Information Control dimension for the 5 community colleges studied. The data offered in this study provided useful information for library self-study and ideas for improving the college's library services.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of school libraries in supporting an inquiry based approach for teaching and learning science subjects in senior secondary schools in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The significance of this study revolves round the prominence given to science education being a mechanism for realising national advancement in Nigeria. This was emphasised in the Nigeria National Policy on Education (2013) as the Federal Government of Nigeria adopted science education as an instrument for effecting national development. This study addressed the following research questions: What is the status of secondary school libraries in Ekiti State, Nigeria? To what extent does the quality of library resources influence science curriculum implementation? To what extent do science teachers advocate using information resources beyond textbooks?

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Library and Information Studies)
The study examined the availability of e-resources in the Ibrahim Babangida Library at Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola (MAUTECH) focusing to integrate e-resources in a dedicated portal for easy access. The study was motivated by the Nigerian vision 20:2020 and the trend in 21st century academic libraries to offer electronic resources and services to meet users? demands and use of technology. Mixed methods were sequential, concurrent, conversion and integrated approaches used. A descriptive case study approach was employed. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Diffusion of Innovation (DoI) theories framed the study. Based on these, a conceptual framework was constructed. To achieve triangulation, questionnaires, interviews and scanning of library portals were used to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. Academics, students, academic librarians, and information and communication technology experts acted as participants. Findings reflected low use of the Ibrahim Babangida Library, dissatisfaction with the quality and quantity of the library collection, insufficient and unreliable Internet access on campus, limited information literacy education, familiarity and utilization of e-resources due to flexibility and easy access to academic information, need for digitisation of library resources and the need for a dedicated library portal. The study recommends, amongst others, information literacy education for students and academics, subscription to full-text databases, provision of sufficient and free Internet access, e-resource and e-services policies, and establishing a consortium with other Nigerian academic libraries. The outcome of the study was a designed, established and functioning library portal based on the input of all the stakeholders of the MAUTECH community.

This dissertation aims to analysis the cultural policies on Lula da Silva (2003-2011) and Dilma Rousseff (2012-2014) government, about books, reading and libraries. In this case, the introductory chapter discusses the construction of Capitalist State and Cultural Industry, in order to understand the contempory cultural public policies and, in special, the book, library and reading, in this context. Chapter 2 presents a historical overview of cultural public policies, with an emphasis on book, reading and library from Vargas (1937-1945) to Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2002) government. Chapter 3 analysis Lula da Silva (2003-2011) and Dilma Rousseff (2012-2014) government, that although are marked by democratizing prospects includes (subproletarizados) threads of working class, gives continuity to the unequal logic of cultural incentives of old government. On chapter, demonstrates how these policies feed, by ultimately, the cultural industry – deeping the cultural logic as commodity – and remains, in general, restricted tothe development programs represented by (editais) – can effectively prevent universal cultural policies. Therefore, the dissertation concludes statementing that the performance of brazillian State on cultural field, during Lula/Dilma Rousseff governments, both under the sign named “lulismo”, indeed enlarged access to cultural consume and encouraged cultural participation on new socials threads; however, the capital logic remains determining the book, reading and libraries, reproducing the brazillian inequality on educational and cultural upbringing – or “human”.

Abstract:
Reading does not only play a main role in all the educational activity but it is also essential as far as the human beings’ cognitive development and the society’s progress are concerned. It is up to teachers, parents, families and librarians to guarantee effective access to books and other information, as well as their effectual usage. The National Reading Plan aims to reinforce that role, by means of several programs launched in schools, libraries and other entities. This work’s main goal is to reflect upon and research about the promotion of reading in educational contexts. It is a study case on the implementation of the National Reading Plan and on the reading practices of a 4th form class in a primary school of a group of schools in northern Portugal. As far as the specific goals are regarded, we aim at assessing the students’ reading habits and practices both at school and at home; checking if the objectives of the National Reading Plan are accomplished by both the form teacher and the libraries (school library and town library) and verifying if the Plan implementation both enhances the creation of reading habits and strengthens the ones that already existed. In the methodological realm, the study is primarily based upon research made through reading books and documents, which allows to establish the first theoretical fundamentals as well as the relevant aspects of the theme-problem and, secondly, it is based upon and empirical research conducted with a 4th form class in primary school, which allowed us to gather information on the practices used to promote and motivate reading habits. The research we have conducted is qualitative, descriptive and interpretative. The instruments used for collecting data are: direct and non-participative observation, enquiries through questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the data allows us to conclude that the practice of guided reading in the classroom is promoted by the form teacher; however, it is believed that the National Reading Plan guidelines for this school level are far from what is desirable. The families of the children involved in the study seem to be poorly informed about the Plan and most of them do not participate in the activities that both the school and the libraries (school library and town library) promote in this realm. The libraries (school library and town library) obey many of the Plan guidelines, but, in the case analyzed, it is clear that they can plan and promote different activities that can be more effective.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: There is a strong pressure for organizations to attaining, maintaining and improving knowledge standards for sustained competitive strategic advantage. This assignment examines the status of knowledge and knowledge management (KM) practices at the Provincial Library Services (PLIS). I approached the topic by collecting data relevant to the management of information and knowledge and benefits of the KM activities using the following methods: A review of literature and research: - addressing the paucity of literature and research that is both current and directly relevant to libraries was one of the motivating factors behind the study; analysis of key documents and information systems; a questionnaire was distributed to the PUS personnel; informal interviews and observations. The results seem to indicate that PLIS has a knowledge infrastructure and a technology infrastructure. This is apparent in its knowledge programmes, e-mail system, web page, library management system (PROLIB), and limited access to the Internet. Staff has some fairly basic knowledge and information needs that must be addressed. Few knowledge contents should be established. The baseline information provides a foundation for more coordination; recognition of the importance and enhancement of its KM related activities. KM activities should focus on individual capabilities. Recommendations are articulated in terms of a proposed KM strategy. It became evident that success of knowledge management depends on an environment, which is conducive to conversion of individual knowledge to organizational knowledge, the value to which employees place on knowledge and their attitude towards KM. Moreover, indicators of success and evidence of effectiveness should take the measuring criteria beyond a checklist of policies and strategies, procedures and processes, systems, activities but professional competence, commitment, benchmarking and adoption of best practices for attainment of KM goals. Important to note, is the reality that a KM activity for PLIS has to take broader transformation imperatives into account.

Today the services offered by information units, more specifically the Academic Libraries, compose a great differential with the introduction of information technology in library services, which benefits professionals of this niche and users of such services. With this perception, a research was held aiming to identify the use of information services on the Web, offered by the Central Library at Paraiba s State University (BC/UEPB), to the students of Master in Environmental Science and Technology (MCTA). This is an exploratory study of quantitative and qualitative nature. The sample is composed of 49 users. To collect data a questionnaire was applied to users of the Central Library of UEPB and a form was applied to eight directors of Central Libraries of State Universities in the Northeast of Brazil, in order to compare the Web information services offered by BC/UEPB with the ones offered by academic librarians of universities located in the Brazilian Northeast. Data analysis shows that the Web information services offered by the Academic Libraries of State universities in the Brazilian Northeast, in general, present a worrying picture. On one hand, some libraries have not yet implemented that kind of services and, in the other hand, those libraries that already offer them, need a better structure. In this scenario 12.5% of Central Libraries are not computerized and do not have websites, respectively. It can be concluded that, at this moment, on-line information services is not part of the reality of some Central Academic Libraries of State Universities in the Brazilian Northeast. However, comparing the study with other studies on the information services on Web, provided by academic libraries, in general, the realities do not differ significantly.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this two year master’s thesis, I examine the views of library and information science (LIS) students at Uppsala University and The Swedish School of Library and Information Science at the University of Borås. As a method for collecting their thoughts on the matter I chose to create a Webb-based survey. By having them answer a 35-question survey I gathered their opinions on the new Swedish library strategy. As a part of the process of writing the new national library strategy the authors have asked the concerned parties to give their opinions on the first draft of the strategy Från ord till handling – på väg mot en nationell biblioteksstrategi [From Words to Action- towards a national library strategy]. In addition to the survey taken by the students I have compiled and analyzed the 82 views sent to the National Library of Sweden by the library community. This master’s thesis has been done to examine if the university students of library and information science is of the same opinion as the rest of the profession concerning topics such as education, children’s learning and minority languages. The results are presented in figures and quotes and then discussed with the help of a theory of professions. By applying this theory it becomes clear that the students of LIS are introduced to the views and norms of the profession early on during their education.

Mazuyer, Antoine. "Estimation de l'état de contrainte initial in situ dans les réservoirs par approche inverse." Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LORR0079/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Initial stress state is the stress state before any human activity. Its knowledge is essential when dealing with scientific (understanding of plate tectonics), preventive (earthquake prediction) and industrial (understanding reservoirs before their exploitation) purposes. We present a method to estimate the initial stress state in a 3D domain from sparse data. This method relies on an inverse approach which uses the finite elements method to solve the elastic mechanical problem. The model parameters are Neumann conditions, which are defined as piecewise linear functions. The data parameters are stress state observations, such as intensity and orientation at a few points. An ensemble optimization method is used to solve the inverse problem. The method is tested on a synthetic case where the reference solution is known. On this example, the method succeeds in retrieving the stress state at data points as well as in the whole domain. The method is enriched with a mechanical criterion which imposes mechanical constraints in the domain under study. The method is then applied to a real case: the Neuquèn basin in Argentina where borehole stress data is available. This application reveals some of the limits of the presented method. Then, the effect of faults on the stress state is investigated. Different modeling strategies are presented: the objective is to reduce the computing cost, which can be very high when dealing with such complex structures. We propose to model them using only elastic properties. Finally, we present the integrative software which were developed to run mechanical simulations. RINGMesh handles the structural model data structure and RINGMecha runs the mechanical simulations on the model. RINGMecha is interfaced with several simulators. Each of them can be called separately, depending on the problem to be solved. The interface of RINGMecha with third party simulators is done in a user friendly manner. RINGMecha was used for all the computations presented in this thesis. It was built in order to be extended to other problems, with other simulators

Venetis, Mary Jo. "Identification of Remote Leadership Patterns in Academic and Public Libraries." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2008. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc9017/.

Full text
Abstract:
Seminal works on leadership, including those in librarianship define a traditional model of interaction between leaders and followers without reference to the information technology-driven environment. In addition, remote leadership indicates a different model from the traditional model, one that is focused on the interaction of leaders and their staff through digital technology. Although leaders still use face-to-face interaction, due to varied work schedules or job responsibilities, they also recognize the need to lead employees remotely. Leadership studies in library literature have not addressed how library leaders use information technology to lead employees remotely, nor have these studies addressed remote leadership and remote employees, except for some articles on telecommuting. As a result, this research was conducted to address this gap, providing an exploratory foundation of emergent patterns of remote leadership with its associated leadership dimensions rooted in personality traits, behaviors, and skills. Quantitative and qualitative data were obtained from a small sample size of academic and public-library leaders in the United States who participated in a Web-based survey designed specifically for this study, limiting generalizations. Factor analysis was the principal methodology used to obtain findings. Its composite factor scores were also used in the t-test and chi-square analyses. This study identifies some emergent patterns of remote leadership in the library and information-science field, exploring whether library leaders use information technology to be effective remote leaders in a technology-driven environment, and whether existing leadership attributes could be identified as part of the remote-leadership model. Because this study's findings indicated that library leaders are not quite the traditional leader but are not fully integrated into remote leadership, it becomes apparent that they would function with a blend of both face-to-face and electronic interactions, due to the nature of library work. Additionally, this research revealed underlying issues and challenges faced by library leaders as they transition from a traditional-leadership model to a blended model of face-to-face and remote leadership. Future research could include increasing the sample size and response rate to conduct factor analysis properly, and conducting longitudinal studies.
