Abstract:
Two of the largest architecture libraries in Spain are in institutions in Catalonia. One of these is the UPC (the Technical University of Catalonia), the home of the library of the ETSAB (the School of Architecture of Barcelona), which is one of the oldest architecture schools in Spain. The other is COAC (the Architects’ Association of Catalonia), which boasts one of the biggest architecture libraries in a professional association in the country. While these two libraries were built up in the 19th century, other architecture libraries have been created in Catalonia in the 20th century, both in schools of architecture and in the branches of COAC.

Abstract:
The Biblioteca Nacional (BN), founded in 1712 as the Royal Library, became the national library in 1836 and has since then served as the nation's bibliographic repository and a public library for Madrid. It became an autonomous body in 1991. In a major reconstruction of the existing BN building, space occupied by other bodies is being recovered. Legal deposit, established in 1716, now includes audio and visual recordings; the BN has not however had the resources needed to ensure enforcement. The Autonomous Regions have legal deposit of all material published in them. A Reproduction and Conservation Unit has been created to conserve the valuable collections of manuscripts, incunabula and rare books. A new computer system has enabled the BN to undertake several important bibliographic tasks, but not yet to fulfil its role as apex of the Spanish library system. After many years of international isolation the library is playing a substantial role in IFLA and in cooperative activities with Latin American libraries. The challenge facing the BN today is to identify and articulate its role as it relates to public libraries in the Autonomous Regions and to university and special libraries.

The purpose of this study was to create an annotated bibliography about Leonese wrestling. The first author's library was the starting point and then the catalogs of the National Library of Spain, Public Libraries of Spain, Spanish University Libraries Network, as well as the Spanish ISBN Agency Database of books published in Spain were consulted by using the keywords “lucha leonesa” and “aluche”. The annotated bibliography comprises a total of 19 monographs, published between 1977 and 2015. As a whole, they show the eminently local dimension of this traditional sport, the support it has received from several public and private institutions, as well as its double dimension as a sport and as a tradition solidly rooted in Leonese culture.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the type of content disseminated by school libraries through social media and what topics are the most commonly used, to discover if, in addition to topics concerning libraries, information with a wide social scope is also disseminated. Design/methodology/approach This paper reviews the use of social media as well as the implementation of a content analysis on the most used 2.0 platforms, to locate which content is the most relevant in the school libraries of public secondary schools in Extremadura. Findings In the Extremadura region of Spain, the results of the 752 publications posted during the period 2014-2017 by the libraries of the 86 public secondary schools on six selected social media platforms generated a total of 4 categories and 14 subcategories, and point to a predominance of topics related to encouraging and promoting reading and writing, and to the library’s support function for both the classroom and the school. However, shortcomings are detected in content related to social aspects of special interest, such as bullying or education in equality. Originality/value The originality of this paper lies in the fact that although there are some works on the analysis of the content of the social web of libraries in general, especially university libraries, the same does not apply to the evaluation of social media in school libraries, and much less about the analysis of social media content in these types of libraries.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the evolution of bookmobiles in Spain and presents the current state of their implementation and operation in each one of the autonomous communities, with special attention paid to Catalonia. Furthermore based on the information gathered about these mobile libraries, recommendations for future action are given that will allow us to ensure their viability, improve their levels of use, and help expand the number of users. The thesis aims to highlight the quality of the service provided and the need to introduce it in those geographic areas where it does not yet exist. The work has been structured into six major chapters. The first one presents the objectives that marked the research process and that configured the methodology, which is presented in the second chapter, which justifies the instruments developed for gathering information. The third chapter --on the state of the art-- is divided into two separate sections. The first section dealing with the terminological and conceptual issues that affect mobile libraries includes a bibliographic review of the most significant contributions and the evolution of the service. This section closes with a selection of new proposals for mobile library services at the international level. The second section of this chapter includes the study of bookmobiles in each of Spain’s autonomous communities, their background and current status. In the fourth chapter, the specific characteristics of mobile libraries in Spain are analyzed, highlighting those elements that the field work has shown to be most significant. These are organized around ten areas: the service, routes, collections, vehicle, personnel, users, specific services offered, collaborative arrangements, communication and dissemination, and perceptions of those responsible for these services as well as staff members directly involved. The descriptions of the first nine of these areas are based on the opinions of those responsible for the central services and their staff members, and highlight the most relevant characteristics of each of these elements as well as the differences detected. The last section focuses on the perceptions of the two groups directly involved in the service: technical managers of the bookmobiles and the staff members actually working in the vehicles. The thesis closes with some conclusions and recommendations for reviewing and improving upon this service.

Mendez, Alexandra Vialla. "Curating the Americas: Library Practices and Early Histories of the New World Between Spain and Venice." Thesis, 2021. https://doi.org/10.7916/d8-y1qd-fg42.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation investigates how a network of Venetian and Spanish scholars placed ancient texts and new geographic information about the Americas in dialogue to create new histories of the modern world, from the 1510s to the 1550s. I focus in particular on the print production and manuscript exchanges of Venetian state officials Giovanni Battista Ramusio, Pietro Bembo, and Andrea Navagero, and Spanish state officials Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. Under the custodianship of Navagero, Bembo, and Ramusio, the Library of St. Mark, donated to the Republic of Venice by the Greek cardinal Bessarion in 1468, functioned as a site of knowledge production. The gatekeeping and information management practices that these men carried out as caretakers of this politically charged library of Greek and Latin books informed their manuscript exchanges and print production. Geographic news from the Americas in the form of letters, accounts, maps, and printed works posed a particular challenge to classical understandings of the globe, and the Spanish and Venetian intellectuals examined here together faced the challenge of apprehending the new and determining the role and relevance of ancient texts such as those of Ptolemy, Plato, Pliny, and Strabo in the contemporary world. Through their histories, summaries, anthologies, and commentaries, they made news into history, curating the presentation of the Americas for their reading publics. Their published works fixed in print the fluid correspondence networks and manuscript exchanges that enabled their creation, making the private public with a great deal of mediation, selection, and suppression or selective acknowledgment of sources and dialogues. By reading the printed works together with the manuscript backstory, I reveal how these scholars pushed at the boundaries of what was expected of them as Spanish or Venetian state agents. Their curated presentation of information about the Americas obscured the porosity of intellectual exchange among Spanish and Venetian intellectuals at the time, and the extent to which the production of Americana in Venice is not just a Venetian story, but also a Spanish one.

Abstract:
Almanacs are one of the most characteristic subgenres of early modern and modern popular print. One of the keys of their persistence was their ability to evolve over time, which led, among other things, to the publication of almanacs for children. The latter, randomly preserved in libraries and archives, are still largely unexplored by both book historians and scholars of children’s literature. After a brief introduction on the history of almanacs, the chapter describes the contents and materiality of selected examples of almanacs for children from a range of European countries (Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain), printed between 1750 and 1900. By placing these items in the sociocultural context in which they were issued, the chapter attempts to understand the strategies put in place by international authors and publishers.

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) systems can be beneficial in various disciplines such as medicine, space travel or air transport. The Project “Collaboration of aviation operators and AI systems” (LOKI) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) aims to develop guidelines for a human-centered design of communication and also collaboration between users and AI systems. The Project focusses on areas of activity in air traffic management where operators work together collaboratively. To identify the potential for AI support of air traffic controllers as well as pilots, information about the coordination effort of aircrafts for air traffic controllers in the European airspace is needed. The aim of this paper is to identify areas of increased coordination effort for air traffic controllers based on four-dimensional radar data. Here, AI could be advantageous for air traffic management. For this purpose, we used flight tracking data from a network of ADS-B receivers. The data includes all flights in the upper European airspace in September 2019 and has a resolution of one data point per minute. First, the data was pre-processed and visualized. Afterwards three criteria for detecting possible communications between pilots and controllers were applied to the data. The first criterion examines the frequency of climbs and descents in the course of a flight. The second one analyses the changes in flight direction in the flight trajectories. The third criterion identifies aircraft that fall below a minimum vertical and lateral separation between each other. The Python programming language and various data science libraries were used to apply the criteria to the data. The result is a spatio-temporal cadastre with entries of possible controller communication which shows that relatively large areas with a high coordination effort for air traffic management controllers exist in Europe. These areas are mostly located in Central Western Europe and UK, but also in Spain, Portugal and Russia, inter alia. In reality, the coordination effort is probably even higher than in this model. Against this background, it is reasonable to conclude that the potential for using AI in air traffic management is rather high and that the use of AI can be beneficial for ATM operations in Europe.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">All equipment has to endure severe levels of vibrations in aircraft. Specifically, in Helicopters; rotor, engine and transmission are prevalent vibration sources. Consequently, there exist industry-based standards which set peak levels of vibrations that equipment has to be qualified for. During a flight test phase, the exposed vibration levels to which equipment is exposed to are to be monitored meticulously against any exceedance of specified qualification levels. In this study, a custom software tool is developed to automate the task of comparing equipment exposed vibration levels in flights as per equipment’s vibration qualification level derived from Section 8 of the RTCA DO-160 standard [<span class="xref">1</span>]. The tool which is based on open-source libraries, automated the manual and hence error-prone procedure. Analysis’ are performed mainly in two stages: APS for harmonic vibration perspective and PSD for random vibration perspective. Comparisons against a commercial spectrum analysis software are performed to validate the accuracy of the in-house developed tool’s frequency spectrum calculations before decorating this core with layers providing conveniences to users, for instance, vibration frequencies and levels from DO-160 and MIL-STD-810 [<span class="xref">2</span>] are embedded into the tool and are self-regulated based on the user input data. Results are automatically created as figures on which comparison levels are apparent. To increase the execution speed, the tool is modified so as to be run in a multitasking fashion, which leads to diminishing of execution time inversely proportional to the number of dedicated processes working in parallel. The resulting spectrum data is logged in a spreadsheet file. As a result, this study simplified and expedited equipment vibration level analysis which is an ensuing activity after each flight.</div></div>

Abstract:
TSNE and UMAP are popular dimensionality reduction algorithms due to their speed and interpretable low-dimensional embeddings. Despite their popularity, however, little work has been done to study their full span of differences. We theoretically and experimentally evaluate the space of parameters in the TSNE and UMAP algorithms and observe that a single one -- the normalization -- is responsible for switching between them. This, in turn, implies that a majority of the algorithmic differences can be toggled without affecting the embeddings. We discuss the implications this has on several theoretic claims behind UMAP, as well as how to reconcile them with existing TSNE interpretations. Based on our analysis, we provide a method (GDR) that combines previously incompatible techniques from TSNE and UMAP and can replicate the results of either algorithm. This allows our method to incorporate further improvements, such as an acceleration that obtains either method's outputs faster than UMAP. We release improved versions of TSNE, UMAP, and GDR that are fully plug-and-play with the traditional libraries.

Abstract:
A three-dimensional unsteady flow simulation is conducted to investigate clocking effects of a row of stators on the performance and internal flow in a 1.5 stage axial turbine. Although the original turbine has 22 blades of the first stator, 28 blades of the rotor and 28 blades of the second stator, the first stator is reduced by a factor of 22/28 to fit the blade ratio 1:1:1. The unsteady flow solver is implemented using the second order time marching and sliding mesh scheme between blade rows. And then, this flow solver is parallelized using MPI (Message Passing Interface) libraries to overcome the limitation of memories and to save the calculation time. Six relative positions of two rows of stators are investigated by positioning the second stator being clocked in a step of 1/6 pitch. The relative efficiency benefit of about 1% is obtained depending on clocking positions. At mid-span, the first stator wake is mixed up with the rotor wake before arriving at the leading edge of the second stator. The time-averaged local efficiency along the span at the maximum efficiency shows more uniform distribution than that at the minimum efficiency. Moreover, the variation of local efficiency at the mid-span does not coincide with that of overall efficiency. Therefore, it is found in this case that the only wake trajectory of the first stator is not a proper means of predicting the best and worst efficiency positions. This is why the relative efficiency benefit depending on the clocking position is obtained near the hub and casing in this study. So, it is necessary to find a general cause of the clocking effect which is applicable to every test case. The difference between maximum and minimum instantaneous efficiencies during one period is found to be smaller at the maximum efficiency than at the minimum efficiency.

Abstract:
As the density of information stored in automated magnetic tape libraries continues to increase, greater requirements are placed on the precision of mechanical positioning in order to successfully read and write data bits. The location of the read/write head in the direction across the tape’s width (termed the lateral direction) is actively controlled in order to maintain alignment between the head and data tracks, even in the presence of the tape’s lateral vibration. However, during repositioning, vibration is undesirably transmitted from the laterally moving head structure to the axially-moving tape because of frictional contact between the two adjacent surfaces. As an analog of that interaction, a model is developed here to describe frictional vibration transmission from a surface having prescribed lateral motion to a tensioned beam that travels and slides over it. The beam is divided into contiguous regions corresponding to free spans and the beam’s portion that contacts the surface. A critical engagement length between the beam and the surface exists for which vibration transmission at a particular natural frequency can be substantially reduced, and for a given mode, that length depends weakly on the surface’s position along the beam’s span. By contouring the surface to have portions of differing radii of curvature, the extent of vibration transmission can be reduced over a broad range of frequency.

Abstract:
Factor XIII (plasma transglutaminase, fibrin stabilizing factor) is a plasma protein that plays an important role in the final stages of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis. The molecule occurs in blood as a tetramer (a2b2) consisting of two a. subunits and two b subunits. Recently, we have determined the amino acid sequences for both the a. and b subunits of human factor XIII by a combination of cDNA cloning and amino acid sequence analysis. cDNAs coding for the a (3.8 Kb) and b (2.2 Kb) subunits were used for the screening of human genomic DNA libraries. Among 12 × 106 recombinant phage, ∼30 have been shown to contain the sequences for the a subunit and ∼10 have been shown to contain the gene for the b subunit of factor XIII. The clones coding for the a. subunit span ∼90 Kb and have been characterized by restriction mapping. Southern blotting, and DNA sequencing. Both 5’ and 3’ ends of the genomic clones correspond to the 5’ and 3’portions of the cDNA for the a.subunit of factor XIII. The DNA sequence revealed that the activation peptide released ^thrombin (amino acid residues 137), the first putative Ca2+ binding region (around residue 251), the active Site Cys (amino acid residue 314), and the second putative Ca2+ binding region (around residue 473) are encoded by separate exons. Accordingly, the intervening sequences may separate the a subunit into functional and structural domains. The gene organization for the b subunit will also be presented. Abstract:
This paper presents the developments done on a CFD unstructured solver, based on the OpenFOAM® CFD libraries, to perform conjugate heat transfer simulations in turbomachinery applications. The solver uses a SIMPLE-C All-Mach algorithm with a special treatment for the pressure corrector equation to deal with highly compressible flows. Moreover, the solver provides an exhaustive turbulence model library, specific for heat transfer calculations and an implicit treatment for fluid-to-fluid and solid-to-fluid boundaries using a generic grid interface (GGI) that allows a greater mesh generation flexibility. The development of the generic grid interface is described in the current paper. The conjugate numerical methodology was employed to predict the metal temperature of a three-dimensional first stage gas turbine blade at realistic operating conditions. The validation case is based on the 1988 NASA C3X experimental setup of a internally and film cooled vane. The stator vane was internally cooled by an array of radial cooling channels of constant cross-sectional area an externally by rows of film cooling holes. The mesh has been generated with GridPRO®, using a multi block structured approach. The optimization methods used in the grid generator provide a full hex grid maintaining mesh orthogonality at the walls and within the domain and allowing the nodes to be moved to an optimal position. Numerical and experimental results are compared in terms of pressure and temperature distribution on the blade wall at mid-span, as well as heat transfer coefficient profiles.

"CubeNav: A Flight Dynamics tool to support Guidance and Navigation Operations of deep-space CubeSats." Abstract:
CubeNav is an ASI-funded project aimed at developing a Flight Dynamics infrastructure tailored for supporting Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) operations of CubeSats involved in deep-space missions. The project is led by the Radio Science and Planetary exploration Lab of the University of Bologna (Unibo) in partnership with the DART Lab of the Politecnico di Milano. CubeNav leverages on the complementary expertise of the two teams. The development of the navigation analysis tools is performed by researchers of University of Bologna while the DART Lab is in charge of the implementation of the guidance tools. Both teams have been involved in different deep-space CubeSats missions. Namely, Unibo performed the navigation of both LICIACube and ArgoMoon while the DART Lab is leading the phase B study of LUMIO and has performed the mission analysis and GNC development of HERA’s Milani CubeSat. CubeNav is designed to ease the planning, development, engineering, and validation of Flight Dynamics operations and procedures, reducing the need of step-by-step intervention by satellite operators. This, in turn, could drastically reduce the learning curve to perform GNC analysis, the chances of human error, and time for scenario setting and data analysis. These aspects are identified as key elements for performing a cost-effective ground-based navigation of small, low-budget interplanetary missions such as those involving CubeSats. For those missions the system development costs scale with its size, but this is not yet the case for flight dynamics operations which are still performed from ground. Therefore, it is clear that any software that could minimize the involvement of operators in repetitive tasks will beneficially impact on navigation costs of such missions, thus potentially enabling a wider number of deep-space missions with CubeSats. This work presents the overall architecture of CubeNav, with a focus on the modules being implemented and on the level of interaction between the user and the software blocks interfaces and outputs. First, an introductory overview of the main objectives of the tool and how these have driven the definition of the overarching design criteria is given. In particular, it is described how the software is being developed in a modular fashion and how this shall ease the future implementation of an automation layer to perform operations and analyses. Then, an overview of the external dependencies and underlying third-party software libraries is provided. These include ESA’s GODOT software and SPICE which are employed for the generation of orbital models and observations model. In the second part of the paper the three software functional blocks composing CubeNav are introduced and outlined: the interface and the data format conversion layer, the flight dynamics layer and the Graphical User Interface (GUI) layer. The “interface layer” serves as connection between Unibo and DART proprietary software tools developed in previous projects to perform navigation and trajectory optimizations. Since these tools have various output formats it is necessary to convert them in a set of standardized interface files which can be then employed within the GODOT and SPICE modules or used to exchange information with external partners. Among proprietary software which CubeNav can interface are worth mentioning DART Lab’s optimization tools ULTIMAT, LT2O, and DIRETTO. The interface layer also provides code segments necessary to directly convert data package obtained from these tools and make them available to the GUI for final processing and visualization. The second functional block instead groups a set of tools written in C++ and Python to perform flight dynamics computations. These are further divided into two sets: navigation and guidance. The navigation one, developed by University of Bologna, serves as an aid to the operational navigation procedure, making emphasis on the time management and real-time assessment of the orbit determination solution. The second set gathers instead tools developed by Polimi’s DART aiding Guidance & Control (GC) analyses. These comprises tools for the computation of astrodynamical events, which involve the celestial mechanics of bodies that the spacecraft could approach during the mission and that could influence its operativity. Furthermore, software to handle the reconstructed and predicted spacecraft state and its uncertainty in the optimization time span or to manipulate and convert the control acceleration in direction and magnitude are also part of this subset. Finally, the Graphical User Interface is introduced. The GUI is the last layer of the tool and represents a two-way interface which the user will interact with. The GUI will allow the user to specify input parameters and select desired outputs as well as providing them with the related graphical and text outputs. It is described how the way of presenting and storing these outputs is beneficial both for the interaction with the operators and for allowing the generation of a schedule of automated activities and tasks for operation purposes. Subsequently, some details are given for the timeline plot, which allows to group all relevant information coming from navigation (station passes, station availability, ...) and guidance (manoeuvre times, no-thrust windows, …) providing the users, mission analysts and FD manager with a complete overview of the upcoming events and activities. To conclude, some remarks on the ongoing development and future improvements of CubeNav are described, focusing in particular on the automation layer. Overall, CubeNav could be an effective integrated tool for supporting flight dynamics operations, efficiently exploiting the knowledge and tools of two research groups. The tool enables to obtain all mission details relevant to the navigation operations, thus raising the level of automation of flight dynamics operations. The modularity of the tool represents its strength in terms of adaptability to different optimization tools and tasks automation. The authors would like to acknowledge ASI for the support received.

Abstract:
Pseudociencia y sociedad en España. Estado de la cuestión e investigaciones recientes analyses the communicative strategies that pseudoscience uses for its social ex-pansion. This work begins with the definition of an epistemological framework that allows us to understand the phenomenon of pseudoscience and its rela-tionship with the main factors of contemporary society, such as relativism and liquidity. As a consequence of the postmodern condition, absolute certainties vanish and the possibility of not only ignoring science but even denying it be-comes real. In this sense, one of the main theses of this work is that the over-informed, postmodern and liquid society favours the expansion of pseudo-scientific discourses. Spain, like most countries, is no stranger to this expan-sion. To confirm this hypothesis, different social groups have been analysed to a) identify the degree of insertion of pseudoscience in these contexts; b) describe and categorise the communicative elements present in pseudoscien-tific discourses; and c) propose lines of action to limit the rise of these dis-courses. The present research has covered science journalists, literature, libraries, universities and different representatives of the biomedical field, such as pharmacists and healthcare professionals. Mixed methodologies have been applied: in-depth interviews to identify discursive patterns, content analysis, data analysis, and focus groups. Among the main conclusions, the followings stand out: 1) Pseudoscience uses fallacy, relativism, emotional reinforcement, opposition to a supposed dogmatic concept of science, antiquity, holistic or naturalistic arguments, among others to expand. 2) Pseudoscience normalizes its social discourse through its appearance in different contexts, in some cases openly, and in others in a discourse of risk minimization that favours its nor-malization as something innocuous. As a whole, the pseudoscientific discourse represents a challenge for scientific communication that must be addressed using all the communicative tools available.

Zhang, Hongbin, Shahal Abbo, Weidong Chen, Amir Sherman, Dani Shtienberg, and Frederick Muehlbauer. Integrative Physical and Genetic Mapping of the Chickpea Genome for Fine Mapping and Analysis of Agronomic Traits. United States Department of Agriculture, March 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2010.7592122.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Chickpea is the third most important pulse crop in the world and ranks first in the Middle East; however, it has been subjected to only limited research in modern genomics. In the first period of this project (US-3034-98R) we constructed two large-insert BAC and BIBAC libraries, developed 325 SSR markers and mapped QTLs controlling ascochyta blight resistance (ABR) and days to first flower (DTF). Nevertheless, the utilities of these tools and results in gene discovery and marker-assisted breeding are limited due to the absence of an essential platform. The goals of this period of the project were to use the resources and tools developed in the first period of the project to develop a BAC/BIBAC physical map for chickpea and using it to identify BAC/BIBACcontigs containing agronomic genes of interest, with an emphasis on ABR and DTF, and develop DNA markers suitable for marker-assisted breeding. Toward these goals, we proposed: 1) Fingerprint ~50,000 (10x) BACs from the BAC and BIBAC libraries, assemble the clones into a genome-wide BAC/BIBAC physical map, and integrate the BAC/BIBAC map with the existing chickpea genetic maps (Zhang, USA); 2) fine-map ABR and DTFQTLs and enhance molecular tools for chickpea genetics and breeding (Shahal, Sherman and DaniShtienberg, Israel; Chen and Muehlbauer; USA); and 3) integrate the BAC/BIBAC map with the existing chickpea genetic maps (Sherman, Israel; Zhang and Chen, USA). For these objectives, a total of $460,000 was requested originally, but a total of $300,000 was awarded to the project. We first developed two new BAC and BIBAC libraries, Chickpea-CME and Chickpea- CHV. The chickpea-CMEBAC library contains 22,272 clones, with an average insert size of 130 kb and equivalent to 4.0 fold of the chickpea genome. The chickpea-CHVBIBAC library contains 38,400 clones, with an average insert size of 140 kb and equivalent to 7.5 fold of the chickpea genome. The two new libraries (11.5 x), along with the two BAC (Chickpea-CHI) and BIBAC (Chickpea-CBV) libraries (7.1 x) constructed in the first period of the project, provide libraries essential for chickpea genome physical mapping and many other genomics researches. Using these four libraries we then developed the proposed BAC/BIBAC physical map of chickpea. A total of 67,584 clones were fingerprinted, and 64,211 (~11.6 x) of the fingerprints validated and used in the physical map assembly. The physical map consists of 1,945 BAC/BIBACcontigs, with each containing an average of 39.2 clones and having an average physical length of 559 kb. The contigs collectively span ~1,088 Mb, being 1.49 fold of the 740- Mb chickpea genome. Third, we integrated the physical map with the two existing chickpea genetic maps using a total of 172 (124 + 48) SSR markers. Fourth, we identified tightly linked markers for ABR-QTL1, increased marker density at ABR-QTL2 and studied the genetic basis of resistance to pod abortion, a major problem in the east Mediterranean, caused by heat stress. Finally, we, using the integrated map, isolated the BAC/BIBACcontigs containing or closely linked to QTL4.1, QTL4.2 and QTL8 for ABR and QTL8 for DTF. The integrated BAC/BIBAC map resulted from the project will provide a powerful platform and tools essential for many aspects of advanced genomics and genetics research of this crop and related species. These includes, but are not limited to, targeted development of SNP, InDel and SSR markers, high-resolution mapping of the chickpea genome and its agronomic genes and QTLs, sequencing and decoding of all genes of the genome using the next-generation sequencing technology, and comparative genome analysis of chickpea versus other legumes. The DNA markers and BAC/BIBACcontigs containing or closely linked to ABR and DTF provide essential tools to develop SSR and SNP markers well-suited for marker-assisted breeding of the traits and clone their corresponding genes. The development of the tools and knowledge will thus promote enhanced and substantial genetic improvement of the crop and related legumes.
