Jørgensen, Christina Louise, and Nynne Harrishøj Schultz. "Danish Certified Prosthetists and Orthotists’ experience of their intercultural competencies in the treatment of immigrants : A qualitative interview study." Thesis, Jönköping University, HHJ. Ortopedteknisk plattform, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-52896.

Abstract:
Background: To be able to meet social harmony in a continuously globalizing world, intercultural competencies are important to possess as an individual. Thus, it is also important for Certified Prosthetists and Orthotists (CPOs) and other health care providers since they meet many diversities in connection to their work. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate Danish CPOs’ experience and perception of their intercultural competencies in the treatment of immigrants. Method: This study is a qualitative interview study using a phenomenological approach. Semi-structured interviews are used to collect the data from five CPOs working in Danish clinics. A content analysis, with an inductive approach, is used for the analysis. Findings: From the analysis of the participant interviews, seven sub-categories were found and further divided into three categories: Treatment, work environment, and development of competencies. These contribute to describe the main category and the aim of this study. Conclusion: The Danish CPOs, who participated in this study, experienced that they did not treat immigrants differently than non-immigrants. However, they experienced that some challenges could be connected to the treatment of immigrants, such as communication difficulties, but they all had a perception, that they used specific tools and strategies to accommodate these challenges. Furthermore, they all experienced that their intercultural competencies had improved with experience, but most of them were also interested in further development of their competencies.

Abstract:
While almost 23 percent of the students in the Swedish upper secondary school are foreigners, only a fraction of the school libraries’ collections consists of literature written in other languages than Swedish or English. This study examines how five school librarians experience the task of working with literature composed in foreign languages in the multicultural and multilingual school of today. The results of the qualitative interviews are analyzed in relation to the legislation and policy documents that the school libraries are working by, and also in relation to the theoretical framework of sociocultural theory and the theories on second language acquisition developed by linguist Jim Cummins. The study shows that while multilingualism is discussed as an important matter in the legislation and policy documents that the school libraries work by, the librarians in this study largely view the question of foreign literature as peripheral. Most part of the librarians connects first language reading to leisure-time activities rather than curricular activities, and stresses that the Swedish language should be prioritized in Swedish schools. The paper is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Ducarroz, Simon. "Le tabagisme et le risque de cancers liés au tabac chez les migrants en Europe." Thesis, Lyon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LYSE1029/document.

Abstract:
International migration is increasing and Europe is no exception with immigrants accounting for more than 10% of the total European Union population in 2014. One pressing issue is tobacco use in immigrants as they may use tobacco differently from the natives of the hostcountry and this could result in differing tobacco‐related cancers (TRC) risks compared to those in the natives. However very little is known about tobacco use, a major avoidable cancer cause, and TRC in immigrants in Europe. The overall objective of this thesis was to investigate tobacco use and risk of TRC in immigrants. The aims were to: explore tobacco use and its determinants in immigrants in France (TOBAMIG pilot study), compare the burden of TRC between immigrants and natives in Denmark, put these results into context with current knowledge, and give guidance on how to set up a study on tobacco use and cancer risk in immigrants in France using the experience from the TOBAMIG pilot study. In the TOBAMIG pilot study information on tobacco use and its determinants was collected from a mixed sample of immigrants, suggesting a large‐scale study was in principle feasible, but modifications from the TOBAMiG approach were to be made. In Denmark, the overall TRC rate in immigrants was lower than that of the natives; however, large differences were observed by cancer‐site and by country of origin, suggesting that among other factors the smoking patterns from the immigrant’s country of origin have a primary role in the burden of TRC. Finally, with regard to a large‐scale study in France, two study designs are proposed, depending on the quantity of information sought, to better understand tobacco use in immigrants and risk of TRC

Abstract:
My purpose with this essay is to look at how librarians, who work with immigrants every day, look upon their own purpose to further integration. I also look how they work with program activities and how that may improve integration. In the survey 4 librarians from 3 different libraries, who work mainly with integration and immigrants as a user group, are interviewed. The results show that work with program activities are useful for integration because it offers a way to participate in dialog and interaction with other people. However, the librarians think that it is possible to make every activity in the library to further integration.

Abstract:
When applying for a library card you normally need to show a valid ID and register your contact information. Some people cannot meet these requirements, e.g. undocumented immigrants, and this thesis examines how pub- lic libraries in Sweden act towards this group. The purpose of the study has been to examine which arguments have been used in the discussion regarding undocumented immigrants’ right to become library patrons, and to examine how the public libraries interpret the Swedish Library Act, which states that public libraries should be accessible to everyone. To examine how Swedish public libraries presently handles this question, a survey was sent out to public libraries in all of Sweden’s municipalities, and in three of them interviews were conducted and the public debate analysed. The thesis’ theoretical framework consists of recent year’s discussion in citizenship theory that challenges the notion of citizenship and suggests that presence and acts of citizenship grant even non- citizens certain civic rights in the modern welfare state. The results of the study show that some public libraries in Sweden have discussed how to act towards un- documented immigrants and have adapted their policies to meet the needs of this user group. The argument ana- lysis shows that the discussion regarding the undocumented immigrants’ right to become library patrons consists of a practical as well as an ideological discussion. The libraries want to be able to identify their users, but it is not a question of principle. In the political discussion, however, the opinion is expressed that individuals without permission to be in the country should not be granted access to public institutions such as public libraries. For the libraries, presence is more important than citizenship, and the Swedish Library Act, if somewhat vague when it comes to the rights of undocumented immigrants, supports these policy changes. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Since 2015, especially after the syrian conflict, there has been an increasing number of refugees arriving in Denmark. following the refugee crisis, Danish governments series of policy reforms in oredr to minimise the effects of refugee crisis on Denmark. The research is motivated by the importance of the contemporary migration in this ever more globalising world. The study is aiming to answer how Danish immigration and integration policies problematise and politicise refugees and assylum-seekers as well as the solusions they present to solve the problem. In order to answer the question, the study uses the WPR approach by Bacchi to analyse the Denmark's Immigration and integration policies, through conducting a political discourse analysis on the selected policies from 2015 to 2019. The findings of the study indicates that refugees are prolematised, politicised and presented as both 'short-term' and 'long-term' threats to the Danish society, especially Denmarks 'ethnic and religous cohesion' as well as a threat to Denmark's national security. They are further represented as an undesirable from of immigrants who are seeking assylum in Denmark due to Denmark economic attractivness.

Abstract:
In countries like Sweden the public libraries add to what schools and other institutions do, trying to fill the less formal gaps regarding the needs of learning language and customs of society, and making information more available. This essay; Integration and Social Capital: Newcomers Social Capital at Public Libraries According to Library Staff, seeks to research how activities for immigrants within Swedish public libraries enables strengthening of social capital and trust in society within this group. Earlier research within this subject lean towards that is the case, though most of the earlier research tend to primarily focus on the immigrant perspective, why this essay seeks to view the subject within the profession, interviewing library staff responsible for such activities. To do so this essay lean on social capital theories of Robert E. Putnam and alike, semi structured interviews and several scientific articles and well as semi scientific reports of this matter. Results and conclusions of the study will confirm the possibility of public libraries strengthening social capital and trust, but cannot claim that this is always the case. It also confirms that this possibility is what library staff experience, since they without knowing what theory has been used, depicts happenings typical for evolving social capital and trust.

Abstract:
The aim of this two years master thesis in Library and Information Science is to examine how librarians and library managers in the three Stockholm suburbs of Alby, Fisksätra and Rinkeby think and reason about the role of public libraries in the integration process. The aim is also to examine whether their perception differ from that of local politicians at the municipal level. The theoretical framework is Marianne Andersson and Dorte Skot-Hanses model for analysis of the local library profile, and Jose Alberto Diaz theory on the integration process. The method used is qualitative interviews. The interviews were recorded and the content was analyzed using qualitative content analysis.  The results of this study show that the library services in the three suburbs, rather than being stipulated by the legal demand for special services towards immigrants, are based on the needs of the local population. Since a majority of the populations in the three suburbs are of foreign origin, no specific conceptual apparatus (such as immigrant) is required. Furthermore, the study shows no significant differences between library personnel and local politicians in their perception of the public librarys role in the integration process. There were, however, in the case of Fisksätra, different views expressed concerning the primary purposes of the local library.  According to Diaz model of the integration process, the library primarily plays a role in the social, communicative and personal integration dimension. All of the library's four roles (identified by Andersson and Skot-Hansen  as a cultural centre, a knowledge centre, an information centre and a social centre) are of importance for the integration, but the roles sometimes compete, indicating a lack of sufficient economic and human resources.

ABSTRACT

Can Danish experience explain why Sverigedemokraterna had a higher support among voters in Skåne, than among other Swedish voters?

Essay in Political Science, C-level

Author: Jenny Wood

Tutor: Gregg Bucken-Knapp

Autumn 2006/ Spring 2007

The key question of this essay concerns the outcome of Sweden’s latest election. When all the votes where counted, the county of Skåne showed an exceptionally high support for the right wing nationalist party Sverigedemokraterna. Why then, did Sverigedemokraterna have a higher support among voters in Skåne (as part of the larger and transnational Öresund region), than among other Swedish voters? My hypothesis is the following: the regional interaction within Öresund has not only had positive effects concerning the values that the people of Skåne hold. In other words, Danish experience has changed the way in which the people of Skåne view immigrants and radical right wing parties.

Before I go on any further I will explain what is meant by the Öresund region. This region encompasses both parts of Sweden and Denmark (most notably Skåne and Själland), and the interaction between the two countries have increased considerably since a physical bridge between the two border regions was opened in July 2000.

Now, let us go on to the purpose of this essay, which is to answer the key question, and also to determine if the regional cooperation in the Öresund region has led to changes in the way the people of Skåne view right wing nationalist parties. Therefore, I explored the effects of the interaction between the Swedish region Skåne and the Danish region Själland, in order to discern if the Danes negative views towards immigrants and their strong feelings of nationalism, have effected Swedes and their values. In other words, was it possible that the Danish hostility towards immigrants and their unproblematic view of right wing nationalist parties, had been transmitted to the people of Skåne? Last but not least, it has also been the purpose of this essay to prove that traditional variables, concerning the question of why people vote for right wing nationalist parties, do no longer explain this phenomenon. By traditional variables I mean unemployment and a high density of immigrants of the population in a specific area.

In order to research the above mentioned issues, I have gone through letters to the editor, sent to the newspaper Sydsvenskan, and analysed the material using qualitative text analysis. I have also studied literature within the field of cross-border studies.

After ten weeks of research, I came to the conclusion that the traditional variables do not explain why Sverigedemokraterna received such a high proportion of the votes in Skåne. However, this essay also sheds light on the possibility of Danish experience as a plausible variable when it comes to explaining the outcome of the last election, but based on my limited study I can neither confirm nor dismiss the hypothesis. However, my study does provide some evidence that supports the hypothesis. In order to draw any conclusions however, it would have to be broadened in itself and replicated in other sections of Sweden or nationally.

The results of my study might leave the key question unanswered, but in itself can be viewed as an important step towards obtaining a clearer overview of what has driven the increased vote share for Sverigedemokraterna.

Abstract:
Public library services in New Zealand are being re-examined in light of the developments in ICT and an increasingly multicultural population. The research question investigated was “Can an internet portal on a public library website be used to meet the information needs of new Chinese Mandarin immigrants to the Auckland region of New Zealand?” In an attempt to effectively answer the research question and sub-questions the researcher conducted a literature review on two aspects relevant to the study: immigration theory and information behaviour (IB). Thirty Chinese Mandarin speaking recent migrants to the Auckland region of New Zealand were interviewed in-depth to determine their information behaviour (IB) and resources used. The findings indicate that respondents were in need of everyday survival information. The findings suggest that a more coordinated approach to information provision, for example through a library web portal, will assist respondents in their search for information relating to their initial settlement.

The objective of the thesis is to describe and evaluate services of public libraries aimed at immigrants and national minorities in the Czech Republic and programs to support them. The first part defines the principal terms related to libraries and minorities. An overview of legislation follows, focused on the same topic. The third part introduces five most common national minorities and immigrant groups living in the Czech Republic. The fourth chapter describes all regional libraries in the Czech Republic, two of municipal libraries near the national border where the percentage of minorities is higher and one specialized library with a focus on their foreign- language equipment, events, meetings or exhibitions about or for national minorities or immigrants, their cooperation with various organizations, employees' interest in minorities and a possibility of registration of foreigners at libraries. Following part is about programs and projects supporting foreigners in Czech libraries. The sixth chapter describes selected organizations working in the migration field. Next is an own survey which was made in 32 public libraries in the Czech Republic. Chapter next to last describes a situation abroad, in Sweden with a focus on their Immigrant Institute. The last part is an evaluation of data about the...

Von, Beck M. K. E. L. B. (Margarethe Kunhild Ehrengard Luise Bodild). "The role of the South African public library in support of adult black illiterates in urban areas." Thesis, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/17831.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the history of the phenomenon illiteracy and the response of the public library in selected countries for about one hundred and fifty years with particular focus on the Republic of south Africa. The influence that this manifestation has on the individual Black urban adult, the society in which the illiterate adult lives and the economy of the country are sharply focused. The principal argument is that public libraries have historically adapted their services to meet new social challenges, and in South Africa illiteracy among Black urban adults constitutes such a challenge. As an extension of its traditional educational function, the public library is beginning to meet this challenge in the role of literacy support. The reasons for the high illiteracy rate among the Black adult urban population are discussed in their historical context. As far as the methodology is concerned, extensive literature studies were undertaken on international as well as local data bases. Correspondence was entered into with overseas research institutes, academics and consultants. Interviews were conducted to ascertain the most recent developments relating to the literacy problem in a well-defined geographical region. Conclusions are made to the effect that there is a historical imperative for the South African public library system to fully discharge its responsibility to Black South Africans. In order to achieve this the public library in South Africa should re-examine, re-interpret and extend its educational function to include the challenge of the role of literacy support. It is further reconunended that the Provincial Library services in south Africa should coordinate disparate efforts and activities in this regard. The marketing of the public library has become more important in the prevailing economic climate. If the public library wishes to remain an indispensable social institution in the lives of the citizens of South Africa and specifically if it takes the role of literacy support seriously, it will of necessity have to market its services. Other organizational implications for public libraries of this new challenge of literacy support are spelled out clearly and areas requiring further research are indicated.

Abstract:
Public libraries are facing a great challenge to succeed in serving their increasingly diverse communities. This thesis focuses on the acquisition of foreign-language books in public libraries and attempts to address the question whether libraries have special strategies to select and acquire foreign-language books. Particular attention is paid to fiction, the main genre offered by public libraries. To help answer the thesis question, the author compares the acquisition strategies of the Municipal Library of Prague and the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin using structured interviews with the key persons responsible for the acquisition of foreign-language books. As a background, the author provides a literature review of foreign-language materials in public libraries and specifically, the acquisition strategy for those materials (i.e. including case studies, research projects and trends from the Czech Republic, the US, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands). This knowledge foundation is considered in the comparison of the two libraries and their acquisition strategies. The comparative study confirms the trends highlighted in the literature review, such as outsourcing, approval plans and gifts as common ways of acquiring foreign- language literature. This thesis further contributes...
