Abstract:
This paper theoretically explores how conversation-based programming in public libraries might support meaningful interactions between immigrants and individuals from the dominant ethnic group, and as a result, facilitate integration. The theoretical lens consists of Intergroup Contact Theory and a social-psychological model of integration. Four examples of library-based conversation-based programming are given in order to illustrate and expand upon the theoretical discussion: the Women’s Story Circle at the Reykjavik Public Library in Iceland; Expat Dinners at public libraries in Denmark; the Memory Group at the Torshov branch of the Deichman Library in Norway; and the Språkhörnan programme at Malmö City Library in Sweden. Based on these examples, conversation-based programming shows potential for supporting integration through its ability to support, to varying degrees, equal status contact, common goals, intergroup cooperation and explicit social sanction, as well as the extensive and repeated contact needed for intergroup friendships to be established.

Abstract:
A number of public libraries in Denmark have acquired original prints or other works of art since the Danish Library Act of 1964, but only some lend pictures to individuals. Special art departments, bringing together literature, pictures, and other material, have been created in a few major libraries. Art exhibitions are an important activity undertaken by libraries as part of their role of making art accessible to the public. Abstract:
Art libraries in Denmark mostly fall into one of two categories: art departments’ in public libraries, and research libraries attached to colleges, universities, and museums. Librarians in research libraries are in many cases scholars in their own right, while library staff at the Kunstakademiets Bibliotek are responsible for the Bibliografi over dansk kunst (sadly not published since 1981) and for Danish contributions to the BHA. The Royal Library and some art libraries hold collections of visual resources and of archival materials; in addition, there is an autonomous national archive of Danish artists, Weilbachs arkiv. An art librarians’ section of Bibliotekarforbundet (the Union of Danish Librarians), Kunstfaggruppen, was initiated by art librarians in public libraries, but is open to other art librarians too; Danish art librarians also work together within ARLIS/Norden. Professional training in Denmark is largely confined to general librarianship; art librarians in public libraries tend to be trained librarians with a personal enthusiasm for art, whereas librarians in research libraries are in some cases graduates but are not necessarily trained librarians. While the public library system took advantage of standardization, automation, and networking, the research libraries could not so readily embrace change, but two recent initiatives are beginning to bring libraries of all kinds together — DanBib, the Danish online union catalogue, formed in 1995 by merging the two separate databases for public and research libraries which both originated in the 1980s, and Kulturnet Danmark, a government-sponsored scheme involving the Internet.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) among immigrants and in countries with historically low IBD risk is rising, implicating environmental risk factors in IBD pathogenesis. The purpose of our study was to determine the incidence rates of Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), among immigrants to Denmark, a high IBD incidence country, according to the country of birth and age at immigration, in comparison with the corresponding incidence rates in the Danish host population. Methods Using the Danish Civil Registration System, we identified all residents in Denmark with a known country of birth between January 1977 and December 2018. First-generation immigrants were persons who, along with parents, were born outside Denmark; second-generation immigrants were Danish-born persons whose parents were born outside Denmark. We recorded immigrants’ (or parents’) country of birth, age at immigration and duration of stay in Denmark. Study participants were followed for CD and UC diagnosis in the Danish National Patient Registry. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) according to immigration status were estimated using log-linear Poisson regression analysis, and stratified by IBD prevalence in the country of birth (low, intermediate and high), and among first-generation immigrants, by age at immigration and duration of stay in Denmark. Results In this cohort of 9,038,025 subjects, among 1,295,518 first-generation and 208,826 second-generation immigrants eligible for inclusion, 4,805 first-generation and 898 second-generation immigrants were diagnosed with CD or UC. The risk of IBD among first-generation immigrants reflected risk in the country of birth (low, intermediate or high, Table 1), and increased with >20 years stay in Denmark (Table 2). Among second-generation immigrants, the risk of CD and UC was comparable to that in Danish natives (Table 1). Younger age at immigration did not impact IBD risk. Conclusion In this population-based study, the risk of IBD among first-generation immigrants reflected that in their country of birth, and increased with >20 years stay in Denmark. Among second-generation immigrants, the risk was comparable to native Danes. These findings underscore the role of environmental risk factors in the aetiology of IBD. Further studies to determine risk factors for IBD among immigrants to Denmark are ongoing.

"Danish Certified Prosthetists and Orthotists’ experience of their intercultural competencies in the treatment of immigrants : A qualitative interview study." Thesis, Jönköping University, HHJ. Ortopedteknisk plattform, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-52896.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: To be able to meet social harmony in a continuously globalizing world, intercultural competencies are important to possess as an individual. Thus, it is also important for Certified Prosthetists and Orthotists (CPOs) and other health care providers since they meet many diversities in connection to their work. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate Danish CPOs’ experience and perception of their intercultural competencies in the treatment of immigrants. Method: This study is a qualitative interview study using a phenomenological approach. Semi-structured interviews are used to collect the data from five CPOs working in Danish clinics. A content analysis, with an inductive approach, is used for the analysis. Findings: From the analysis of the participant interviews, seven sub-categories were found and further divided into three categories: Treatment, work environment, and development of competencies. These contribute to describe the main category and the aim of this study. Conclusion: The Danish CPOs, who participated in this study, experienced that they did not treat immigrants differently than non-immigrants. However, they experienced that some challenges could be connected to the treatment of immigrants, such as communication difficulties, but they all had a perception, that they used specific tools and strategies to accommodate these challenges. Furthermore, they all experienced that their intercultural competencies had improved with experience, but most of them were also interested in further development of their competencies.

Abstract:
While almost 23 percent of the students in the Swedish upper secondary school are foreigners, only a fraction of the school libraries’ collections consists of literature written in other languages than Swedish or English. This study examines how five school librarians experience the task of working with literature composed in foreign languages in the multicultural and multilingual school of today. The results of the qualitative interviews are analyzed in relation to the legislation and policy documents that the school libraries are working by, and also in relation to the theoretical framework of sociocultural theory and the theories on second language acquisition developed by linguist Jim Cummins. The study shows that while multilingualism is discussed as an important matter in the legislation and policy documents that the school libraries work by, the librarians in this study largely view the question of foreign literature as peripheral. Most part of the librarians connects first language reading to leisure-time activities rather than curricular activities, and stresses that the Swedish language should be prioritized in Swedish schools. The paper is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Ducarroz, Simon. "Le tabagisme et le risque de cancers liés au tabac chez les migrants en Europe." Thesis, Lyon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LYSE1029/document.

Abstract:
International migration is increasing and Europe is no exception with immigrants accounting for more than 10% of the total European Union population in 2014. One pressing issue is tobacco use in immigrants as they may use tobacco differently from the natives of the hostcountry and this could result in differing tobacco‐related cancers (TRC) risks compared to those in the natives. However very little is known about tobacco use, a major avoidable cancer cause, and TRC in immigrants in Europe. The overall objective of this thesis was to investigate tobacco use and risk of TRC in immigrants. The aims were to: explore tobacco use and its determinants in immigrants in France (TOBAMIG pilot study), compare the burden of TRC between immigrants and natives in Denmark, put these results into context with current knowledge, and give guidance on how to set up a study on tobacco use and cancer risk in immigrants in France using the experience from the TOBAMIG pilot study. In the TOBAMIG pilot study information on tobacco use and its determinants was collected from a mixed sample of immigrants, suggesting a large‐scale study was in principle feasible, but modifications from the TOBAMiG approach were to be made. In Denmark, the overall TRC rate in immigrants was lower than that of the natives; however, large differences were observed by cancer‐site and by country of origin, suggesting that among other factors the smoking patterns from the immigrant’s country of origin have a primary role in the burden of TRC. Finally, with regard to a large‐scale study in France, two study designs are proposed, depending on the quantity of information sought, to better understand tobacco use in immigrants and risk of TRC

Abstract:
My purpose with this essay is to look at how librarians, who work with immigrants every day, look upon their own purpose to further integration. I also look how they work with program activities and how that may improve integration. In the survey 4 librarians from 3 different libraries, who work mainly with integration and immigrants as a user group, are interviewed. The results show that work with program activities are useful for integration because it offers a way to participate in dialog and interaction with other people. However, the librarians think that it is possible to make every activity in the library to further integration.

Abstract:
When applying for a library card you normally need to show a valid ID and register your contact information. Some people cannot meet these requirements, e.g. undocumented immigrants, and this thesis examines how pub- lic libraries in Sweden act towards this group. The purpose of the study has been to examine which arguments have been used in the discussion regarding undocumented immigrants’ right to become library patrons, and to examine how the public libraries interpret the Swedish Library Act, which states that public libraries should be accessible to everyone. To examine how Swedish public libraries presently handles this question, a survey was sent out to public libraries in all of Sweden’s municipalities, and in three of them interviews were conducted and the public debate analysed. The thesis’ theoretical framework consists of recent year’s discussion in citizenship theory that challenges the notion of citizenship and suggests that presence and acts of citizenship grant even non- citizens certain civic rights in the modern welfare state. The results of the study show that some public libraries in Sweden have discussed how to act towards un- documented immigrants and have adapted their policies to meet the needs of this user group. The argument ana- lysis shows that the discussion regarding the undocumented immigrants’ right to become library patrons consists of a practical as well as an ideological discussion. The libraries want to be able to identify their users, but it is not a question of principle. In the political discussion, however, the opinion is expressed that individuals without permission to be in the country should not be granted access to public institutions such as public libraries. For the libraries, presence is more important than citizenship, and the Swedish Library Act, if somewhat vague when it comes to the rights of undocumented immigrants, supports these policy changes. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Since 2015, especially after the syrian conflict, there has been an increasing number of refugees arriving in Denmark. following the refugee crisis, Danish governments series of policy reforms in oredr to minimise the effects of refugee crisis on Denmark. The research is motivated by the importance of the contemporary migration in this ever more globalising world. The study is aiming to answer how Danish immigration and integration policies problematise and politicise refugees and assylum-seekers as well as the solusions they present to solve the problem. In order to answer the question, the study uses the WPR approach by Bacchi to analyse the Denmark's Immigration and integration policies, through conducting a political discourse analysis on the selected policies from 2015 to 2019. The findings of the study indicates that refugees are prolematised, politicised and presented as both 'short-term' and 'long-term' threats to the Danish society, especially Denmarks 'ethnic and religous cohesion' as well as a threat to Denmark's national security. They are further represented as an undesirable from of immigrants who are seeking assylum in Denmark due to Denmark economic attractivness.

Abstract:
In countries like Sweden the public libraries add to what schools and other institutions do, trying to fill the less formal gaps regarding the needs of learning language and customs of society, and making information more available. This essay; Integration and Social Capital: Newcomers Social Capital at Public Libraries According to Library Staff, seeks to research how activities for immigrants within Swedish public libraries enables strengthening of social capital and trust in society within this group. Earlier research within this subject lean towards that is the case, though most of the earlier research tend to primarily focus on the immigrant perspective, why this essay seeks to view the subject within the profession, interviewing library staff responsible for such activities. To do so this essay lean on social capital theories of Robert E. Putnam and alike, semi structured interviews and several scientific articles and well as semi scientific reports of this matter. Results and conclusions of the study will confirm the possibility of public libraries strengthening social capital and trust, but cannot claim that this is always the case. It also confirms that this possibility is what library staff experience, since they without knowing what theory has been used, depicts happenings typical for evolving social capital and trust.

Abstract:
Introduction: Individuals’ cultural backgrounds influence their use of societal resources, including those offered in public libraries. Well-established in library research are explorations of the benefits of public library use to new-comer communities, including migrant workers, immigrants, forced migrants, and international students. However, to date no research has been completed on why these communities use particular resources. Methods: The project outlined in this poster concerns international students from non-Western countries in Scotland. Using a mixed methods approach, the study presented will explore why international students from non-Western countries use specific public library resources, and the cultural factors that influence this use. Analyses: Findings will derive from thematic analysis of participant responses in interview and questionnaire data. Conclusion: An understanding of the perceived value of certain resources can assist in the effective tailoring of resources to serve new community members.

Abstract:
The pandemic laid bare: all homes aren’t equitable learning spaces. Yet, education has long considered the family and home an extension of learning. // As a liberatory act, education must consider responsive, resilient practices for equity. // If education considers the family and home as an essential learning space, a continuation of the learning experience, the inequities must be addressed. In fact, Ulrike Hanemann (2015) argues for systemic change in the attitudes of societies to support learning as a life-wide process, disrupting the idea that it is merely a classroom-based endeavor, and expanding it to include literacy learning, in particular, as situated in social practice and understood as a continuum of learning. Hanemann advocates the development of ‘literate families,’ ‘literate communities,’ and ‘literate societies.' // Yet, currently, this assumption is essentially inequitable. Arguably, it is not just literacy learning, but learning in general which must be situated equitably within society-at-large. // For the past decade, Niteo’s work (www.niteo.org) has almost exclusively focused on our global literacy equity, but now we also turn to address Covid-19’s impact on local literacy in Canada. // There are many challenges to SDG4 and literacy in Canada. Pre-pandemic, Canadian Children’s Literacy Foundation’s statistics reported one out of eight students below the age of 15 and a quarter of early readers in Canada were not reading at grade level. For newcomers to Canada, the average literacy gap is equal to 3.5 years of schooling. This is not limited to newly-arrived newcomers, as established immigrants (10+ years in Canada) have a similar gap. Now, compounding this reality for newcomers is the impact of Covid - slowed academic progress, isolation, and loneliness. // We have learned much from our East African partners and can mirror their community literacy work here. // In a 2022 pilot, local newcomer families nominated by educators or NGOs, paired with UBC-O students, undertook an interest-based, intergenerational exploration of literacy learning in the spirit of play. Literacy access and equity were addressed by utilizing the resources of libraries to inspire the joy of reading. Activities together were built around Niteo’s two open education resources, When We Give Children Books and MicroCredential: Leadership in Literacy. The objective was to cultivate joyously literate communities through a focus on family-wide literacy habits to promote lifelong learning. // As a pathway to resilience and the delivery of a life-wide learning experience, this paper focuses on the Niteo pilot project "Story as Community" and its implications.
