Zvyagintseva, Lydia. "Articulating Our Very Unfreedom: The Impossibility of Refusal in the Contemporary Academy." Canadian Journal of Academic Librarianship 7 (December 15, 2021): 1–24. http://dx.doi.org/10.33137/cjalrcbu.v7.36367.

Abstract:
This paper begins and ends with a provocation: I argue that refusal in librarianship is both impossible and necessary. Reviewing examples of crisis narratives which permeate both American and Canadian universities, I take a materialist perspective on the idea of refusal within academic librarianship. To do so, I draw on the work of Audra Simpson, Kyle Whyte, Eve Tuck, Mario Tronti, and Rinaldo Walcott to examine the sites of impossibility of refusal in the practice of academic librarianship within contemporary neoliberal education institutions. Then, I analyze the totality of capitalism in setting the limit for the practice of refusal through case studies of direct action, including the Icelandic Women’s Strike of 1975 and the 2020 Scholar Strike Canada. Finally, I identify private property and history as key frames for understanding the contradiction at the heart of refusal of crisis. As such, any refusal that does not address the centrality of labour and private property relations can thus be understood as harm reduction rather than emancipation. Ultimately, I argue that for librarians to refuse would require an abandonment of liberalism as librarianship’s guiding philosophy, and a redefinition of librarianship as such.

Abstract:
The main article objective is a terminological analysis of «librarianship» concept. The development of theoretical concepts of librarianship as a science and as a branch of knowledge is explored. The concept of «library thought» and its correspondence with the concept of «the history of librarianship» is analyzed. The author substantiate the idea that the library thought development did not contradict the history of library science and was its important part, librarianship roots should be traced with the emergence of the first libraries. This point of view on the history of librarianship found understanding in the works by I. V. Lukashov, V. V. Skvortsov, M. I. Slukhovsky, Yu. N. Stolyarov and other library scholars. The article deals with polemic questions: when has librarianship been recognized as a science; can the first use of the concept of «librarianship» be considered as a sign of the emergence of library science. The analysis of applying the concept «library science» showed that before the early XX century it was defined as «a systematic presentation of knowledge about libraries organization and the management». The article analyzes dividing the library science into theoretical and practical parts; examines the fate of the theoretical librarianship in frames of «theoretical» discussions taken place in early 1930s, and attempts of Soviet scientists (V. A. Artisevich, I. A. Mesenyashin, N. Ya. Fridieva) to revive the theoretical library science; considers the views of Yu. V. Grigoriev substantiated the library science as independent one. Analysis of the national library science thought development in 1960s-70s of the XX century showed that its development was characterized by a scientific approach, with heightened attention to general theoretical and methodological problems that contributed to forming the librarianship as a science. The article states that in the modern terminology of the national library science there are two concepts: as a librarianship independent science and as a branch of knowledge. Combination into a single term of at least two different «library sciences» leads both to typological and substantial inconsistencies and errors, which can be seen in a variety of theoretical and practical disciplines including the word «librarianship». The author offers two options concerning use of the term «librarianship». The first one is to call the «librarianship» on the western model «library science», and the term «librarianship» applies to various disciplines (library science as a branch of knowledge). The second one is to retain in national science traditional name «librarianship» as a synonym for «library science» and not to use the word «librarianship» in the titles of different library disciplines to avoid confusion.

Abstract:
Several career paths are open to law graduates. Many of them pursue careers in other fields without giving a thought to law librarianship. The fact that majority of law students do not consider law librarianship as a career option is undesirable for the future of law librarianship. The future of law librarianship profession may depend on awareness. The study therefore examined the influence of awareness on the career choice of law librarianship among law students in South-West, Nigeria. The study employed the survey research design. The population for the study was 2,945 undergraduate law students in the in the 12 purposively selected universities that run the approved undergraduate law program up to 500 level in South-West, Nigeria. Krejcie and Morgan’s formula was used to select the sample size of 597. The instrument for data collection was a validated questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for the constructs ranged from .80 to .89. The return rate was 94%. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The result showed that awareness of law librarianship significantly influenced law students’ choice of law librarianship as a career. The study also revealed that law students were slightly aware of law librarianship as a choice of career. Results indicated that the inclination to pursue a career in law librarianship was based on altruistic consideration.

Abstract:
This study examined factors influencing the choice of librarianship as a career among students in Tanzania. A quantitative research approach, the descriptive survey study design, was adopted for this study. Data was collected using online questionnaires. Microsoft Office Excel 2010 was used in analyzing quantitative data. The findings of this study showed that the majority of the students were not aware of the librarianship career path until they joined the library and information science program. The findings of the study further revealed job opportunities, personal interest, and desire for helping people among the factors influencing students to join librarianship. Moreover, the study findings showed that negative perceptions towards librarianship, nature of its work, and lack of appreciation from the employers and clients were the factors that discouraged many of the students from joining librarianship. In general, the study concluded that the majority of the students chose librarianship as the last option after being denied from other professions. Accordingly, the study recommends more means of making students aware of librarianship as a career path; for example, mentors and teachers are trusted by students and can help promote awareness about librarianship careers. Additionally, employers and clients are advised to better appreciate the efforts devoted by librarians as a whole.

Abstract:
Purpose Observing trends and issues plays a key role in the success of any industry. Since 2010, the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) has been publishing papers on top trends and issues in academic libraries in the USA, allowing for reflection, tracking, lesson drawing, adaptation, planning and direction. Such a publication is absent in the Jamaican library industry. This paper aims to examine the extent to which these trends and issues, as reported by ACRL, are evident in Jamaican academic librarianship. Design/methodology/approach Through document and thematic analysis of publications written on Jamaican academic librarianship 2010-2016, this paper highlights trends and issues in Jamaican academic librarianship. Findings There are similarities in the trends and issues in Jamaican academic librarianship and American academic librarianship; the similarities sometimes vary, however, in focus. Additionally, there are trends and issues in Jamaican academic librarianship not mentioned in the literature reviewed on American academic librarianship and vice versa. Research limitations/implications A survey of the chief librarians’ perceptions regarding the trends and issues would be a useful follow-up. Practical implications This paper allows for reflection, comparison, benchmarking, lesson-drawing, planning and direction for academic libraries and other types of libraries in Jamaica and the rest of the developing world. Social implications The gaps highlighted, particularly those with the most potential, can be discussed with the objective of exploring how these can be translated into new or revised services for the community of users. Originality/value This paper is of value, as there is no publication with an explicit focus on trends and issues in Jamaican academic libraries; this paper will be the first publication on trends and issues in Jamaican academic librarianship. In this regard, this paper makes an important contribution to the literature on academic librarianship generally, and to the literature on Caribbean and Jamaican academic librarianship, specifically.

Abstract:
Big changes in the educational system of Sweden took place in 1992/1993 because of political changes in the government. Earlier the government and parliament made decisions about course details at the different universities, and research education was offered only by the universities, and not by the colleges. In the early 1970s the College of Librarianship in Borås was commissioned by the government to offer a two-year academic level supplementary course in librarianship. Until the spring term in 1993, education for librarianship in Borås changed course several times, and five years ago courses in art and music librarianship, which had given students some insights in art history, were discontinued. Beginning in the autumn of 1993 the education system in Sweden will be much freer, implying that every university and college will be permitted to make its own decisions about courses. And from now on courses in librarianship will be offered by the universities in Umeå, Stockholm (starting spring 1994) and Lund, as well as in Borås. Librarianship at the research level was established three years ago at Göteborg University in close cooperation with the college of librarianship in Borås
