Abstract:
Work smarter and save time with the librarian's guide to the hidden-in-plain-sight secrets of Excel, Sheets, and other types of spreadsheets. While some librarians have become very skilled at using the full power of Excel and Sheets to turn data into useful and valuable information, for many librarians the relevance of spreadsheets–and how to use them–is not necessarily obvious. This book demystifies Excel and other spreadsheets. Starting from basic concepts, the book progresses to advanced implementations important to librarians in such areas as collection management, including evaluation and benchmarking; research assessment through the creation of sophisticated bibliometric measures; and library design based on an analysis of patron behavior or the creation of a keyword map of physical collections. Real-life examples highlight a variety of techniques and shortcuts that can be immediately applied to libraries of all kinds. Spreadsheets for Librarians is a book for the desk, not only the library shelves. No prior knowledge of spreadsheets is needed, and readers can expect to learn skills that will enhance their reputation as information and data professionals.

Bisko, Lynne, Heather Buchansky, Brian C. Gray, and E. Gail Reese. Personal Librarians. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400696336.

Abstract:
Experienced authors describe all aspects of a personal librarian program, including potential campus partners, diverse student populations, marketing approaches, technology integration, various assessment methods, and common pitfalls and how to avoid them. In order to get the most out of their research, students need to understand the depth of resources and services available to them. Personal librarian programs help students―especially new ones―to feel welcome in the library and comfortable asking for assistance. They provide enhanced support and serve as students’ point of contact to help them build the information literacy skills necessary to successfully navigate their academic path. Personal Librarians: Building Relationships for Student Success focuses on specific ways to connect with and to engage first-year and other new-to-campus students. The authors provide concrete guidance, informed by interviews with other librarians who have successfully implemented such programs, for librarians wishing to begin or expand programs of their own. Personal librarian programs provide opportunities for the proactive to build relationships that grow student confidence as future needs arise―and the authors, who coordinate personal librarian programs at their own institutions, demonstrate how well they work.

Kitchens, Joel Daniel. Librarians, Historians, and New Opportunities for Discourse. Libraries Unlimited, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400678837.

Abstract:
This book stimulates informed dialogue between librarians and historians regarding the changing nature of history and the resultant needs for a wider variety of collections and library services, including inter-library loan, library instruction, outreach, and reference. Today's history scholars and students utilize information in many different formats, including print, microforms, and digital, with each having its own format-specific requirements. For historians, the library is an essential resource that serves as their "laboratory." Librarians need to recognize the changing needs of this group—arguably among the heaviest users of library materials and services. Librarians, Historians, and New Opportunities for Discourse: A Guide for Clio's Helpersaddresses the concerns and typical operational decisions of librarians in academic libraries regarding reference, instruction, and collection management. The book looks at the role of the librarian holistically, paying special attention to how history is researched and taught, and how this affects librarians. After reading this book, librarians will better understand this group of patrons who are so dependent on library resources for their research and teaching; conversely, historians will grasp the pressures on librarians making the difficult transition between the print and the digital age. As a result, every reader will be capable of having a more informed dialog with "the other half," regardless of their status as a librarian or a historian.
