Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: The aim of the study was to measure the level of physical activity (PA) of the users of an urban park before and after the installation of 2 fitness zones (FZs) and to assess the impact of that intervention on the users’ level of PA. Methods: The System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities method was applied in the urban plaza Liber Seregni in Montevideo (Uruguay): 14 different areas were mapped and then recategorized as fitness (for PAs, including sports), green, and paved zones. Observations were made in the spring (Sep–Oct) of 2011 and 2014, before and after placing 2 FZs. Participation was analyzed by gender, year, mapped areas, and zones, and significant differences were assessed using the χ2 test. Results: In total, 7342 individuals (4091 men and 3251 women) were observed. A greater number of people with intense PA could be seen in the FZ, with significant differences between 2011 (45%) and 2014 (70%; P < .05). Conclusion: This is the first longitudinal study on the impact of an intervention to increase the level of PA in public spaces in Uruguay. Higher intensity levels of PA and fewer sedentary people were observed after the installation of the FZ.

Abstract:
Our aim is to revisit Lucrecio’s reflections concerning Death and Life. Our approach is interdisciplinary as far as it will take into account: Linguistics, Philosophy and Psychoanalysis, within limits. We agree with some other Scholars on the fact that Lucrecio has not been a mad, but rather a wise man, whose reflections about the topic we are dealing with should be considered timeless and an excellent proof of his extreme clear-sightedness or lucidity.</p>

Abstract:

Abstract:
Understanding the dynamics of dominant tree species in tropical forests is important both for biodiversity and carbon-related issues. We focus on the Congo Basin (East of Kisangani) to investigate the respective roles of topographic/soil gradients and endogenous dynamics in shaping local variations in dominance. We used a dataset of 30 1-ha plots, in which all trees above 10 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) were censused. Soil samples were analyzed for standard pedologic variables and a digital elevation model permitted to infer topography and hydromorphy. We found that this forest is characterized by variations in the abundance of three dominant species: Petersianthus macrocarpus (P.Beauv.) Liben (PM), Gilbertiodendron dewevrei (De Wild.) J.Leonard (GD) and Julbernardia seretii (De Wild.) Troupin (JS). These variations occur independently of substratum or topography variations. At plot level, the local relative abundance never reached 50%, the threshold for monodominance proposed in the literature, but rather progressively increased to reach higher values for canopy trees (>60 cm DBH), where this threshold could be exceeded. We found no sign of shifting compositional dynamics, whereby the dominant species would switch between the canopy and the undergrowth. Our results, therefore, support the possibility of the existence of stable dominance states, induced by endogenous processes, such as biological positive feedbacks fostering monodominance. We also document a strong relation between monodominance level and alpha diversity, when giving more weight to abundant species which is expected (R² = 0.79) but also when giving more weight to rare species (R² = 0.37), showing that monodominance influences tree species richness patterns. Structural differences existed between groups, with the PM group having more (and on average smaller) stems and lighter wood on average, but paradoxically also higher biomass and basal area.

ABSTRACTObjective: to investigate the profile of liver donors in the State of Ceara, establishing a relationship with the criteria of the receptors waiting list. Methods: a retrospective documental research was done in a University Hospital in Fortaleza city. Data on all liver donors listed in the liver transplant report archive in the surgical center of the hospital, from 2007 to 2008, were collected, through a structured form. The data is presented in tables and analyzed according to the literature. This study has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal Hospital of the University in Fortaleza (003.02.09). Results: we concluded that there is a very good benefit rate (88%), considering the livers that could be donated. The main cause of death among the donors was cranio-encephalic trauma, in the age group between 21 and 30 years. The majority of cases weighed between 61 and 80 kg. The blood type O was the most commonly found. The priority and classification of clinical seriousness criteria of the probable receptor were considered. Conclusions: the donors’ profile is in accordance with the criteria of the receptors’ waiting list. It should be noted that most of the donors are young males that suffered transit accidents. Descriptors: liver transplantation; tissue donors; health profile.

Abstract:
Background:Previous studies suggested that male sex may be associated with a greater rate of decline in FVC in patients with SSc-ILD. In the SENSCIS trial, nintedanib reduced the rate of FVC decline over 52 weeks vs placebo. Objectives:Analyse the rate of decline in FVC and the efficacy and safety of nintedanib in the SENSCIS trial in subgroups by sex. Methods:Patients with SSc-ILD with first non-Raynaud symptom <7 years before screening and ≥10% fibrosis of the lungs on HRCT were randomised to nintedanib or placebo. We analysed the rate of decline in FVC (mL/year) and adverse events over 52 weeks in male and female patients. Results:Of 576 patients, 433 (75.2%) were female. Compared with males, the female subgroup included a smaller proportion of White patients (64.7% vs 74.8%), a smaller proportion on mycophenolate at baseline (46.9% vs 53.1%), a greater proportion of ATA positive patients (63.3% vs 53.1%), and had a lower mean weight at baseline (66.6 vs 79.1 kg). FVC % predicted (72.8% vs 71.7%) and mRSS (11.2 vs 10.8) were similar in females and males. The adjusted annual rate of decline in FVC in the placebo group was numerically greater in male than female patients (-126.8 [SE 29.0] vs -82.0 [16.2] mL/year). The estimated effect of nintedanib vs placebo on reducing the rate of decline in FVC was numerically more pronounced in males than females (difference: 58.6 [95% CI -18.0, 135.1] vs 34.6 [-9.3, 78.4] mL/year), but the interaction p-value did not indicate heterogeneity in the treatment effect between subgroups (p=0.59). Among nintedanib-treated patients, diarrhoea was reported in similar proportions of females and males (74.7% vs 79.1%); nausea, vomiting and liver test abnormalities were reported in greater proportions of females vs males (35.3% vs 19.4%, 28.1% vs 13.4%, and 15.4% vs 9.0%), while serious adverse events were more frequent in males (32.8% vs 21.3%). In the nintedanib and placebo groups, respectively, adverse events leading to treatment discontinuation were reported in 16.7% and 8.5% of females and 13.4% and 9.2% of males. Conclusion:In the SENSCIS trial in patients with SSc-ILD, the annual rate of decline in FVC in the placebo group was numerically greater in male than female patients. The rate of FVC decline was lower with nintedanib than placebo both in males and females. The safety profile of nintedanib was similar between males and females.Disclosure of Interests:Elizabeth Volkmann Grant/research support from: Forbius, Corbus Pharmaceuticals, Consultant of: Boehringer Ingelheim, Forbius, Speakers bureau: Boehringer Ingelheim, Serena Vettori Consultant of: Boehringer Ingelheim, John Varga Grant/research support from: John Varga is awaiting grants from Boehringer Ingelheim and has received grants from Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer, Takeda, and TeneoBio, Consultant of: John Varga has acted as a consultant for Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Emerald Health, and TeneoBio, Ariane Herrick: None declared, Maurizio Cutolo Grant/research support from: Bristol-Myers Squibb, Actelion, Celgene, Consultant of: Bristol-Myers Squibb, Speakers bureau: Sigma-Alpha, Ana Cordeiro Consultant of: Ana Cordeiro has acted as a consultant for Roche, Speakers bureau: Ana Cordeiro has received speaker fees from Boehringer Ingelheim, Lilly, and Vitoria, Valderilio F Azevedo Grant/research support from: Abbvie, Janssen, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Lilly and Novartis, Consultant of: Lilly, Novartis, Janssen, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Amgen, Pfizer and Abbvie, Speakers bureau: Sandoz, Celltrion, Lilly, Novartis, Janssen, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Amgen, Pfizer and Abbvie, Sindhu Johnson Grant/research support from: Boehringer Ingelheim, Corbus Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithKline, Roche, Merck, Bayer, Consultant of: Boehringer Ingelheim, Ikaria, Christian Stock Employee of: Employee of Boehringer Ingelheim, Martina Gahlemann Employee of: Employee of Boehringer Ingelheim, Lizette Moros Employee of: Lizette Moros is an employee of Boehringer Ingelheim, Margarida Alves Employee of: Employee of Boehringer Ingelheim, Maureen Mayes Grant/research support from: Maureen Mayes has received grants from Boehringer Ingelheim, Corbus, CSL Behring, Eicos, and Galapagos, Consultant of: Maureen Mayes has acted as a consultant for Boehringer Ingelheim, Eicos, and Galapagos. Abstract:
In the context of the growing political instability and deepening economic crisis in Uruguay during the 1960s and early 1970s, the thesis examines two propositions. The first is that politically informed intellectuals, though disaffected or marginalised, will integrate themselves into the political mainstream if circumstances demand and a suitable vehicle allows them to participate usefully in the political process. The second is that, in the Uruguayan case, an expanded notion of dialogue is essential in analysing how this was accomplished, partly because the idea of dialogue was a necessary part of how they worked together and communicated with their public, and partly because dialogue was seen as a crucial element in reforming the nation and as the basis of the relationship between the political party that was to be the agent of such reform and its potential constituency. The thesis begins by examining how the so-called 1945 and 1960s generations overcame intergenerational squabbles and worked together, with the help of an expanding publishing industry, to create a public for their meditations on Uruguay's problems. Then, after briefly outlining the importance of dialogue to the essay as a genre and its role in developing national identity in Latin America, the study examines essays on the state of Uruguay by four major writers in the 1960s: Roberto Ares Pons, Alberto Methol Ferr??, Carlos Maggi and Washington Lockhart. The thesis then traces the intelligentsia's role in the several attempts to heal the rifts within the Uruguayan left and in the formation of the centre left coalition, the Frente Amplio, in 1971, to show how the notion of dialogue was incorporated into its structure, mode of operation and political program. The final section, a case study of Mario Benedetti's political activities and propagandist essays of 1971-1973, examines the contradictions of working as a committed intellectual when the very conditions necessary for intellectual life are breaking down. The thesis concludes that the resurrection of the nation as a site for dialogue with and among all members of society, a project in which the intelligentsia had enthusiastically participated, foundered because drastic political polarisation permitted only one militarist and monologic solution.
