Abstract:
Background: Many patients with diabetes on insulin therapy develop lipohypertrophies (LHTs). So far, LHTs are diagnosed by conventional methods (CM; visual inspection, palpation and/or ultrasound). In everyday life, it would be advantageous to have a quick, simple and inexpensive alternative, for example, diagnosing them by obtaining infrared (IR) images. Methods: We obtained IR images from 43 subjects (21 patients with type 1 diabetes, conventional subcutaneous insulin therapy and known LHTs, 8 patients with CSII and LHTs, 7 patients without LHTs, and 7 healthy people), all from one specialized diabetes practice. The IR images were taken under standardized conditions with a high-resolution infrared camera (VarioCam® HDx Jenoptic, IR pixel 640 × 480, thermal resolution 0.003K) and compared with LHT diagnoses with CM. Results: In 14 of the 29 (48%) patients, CM diagnosed LHTs were “cold spots” in the IR images. The temperature difference to “healthy” skin (without LHTs) was up to 6°C. Of the 14 patients, 11 also showed such spots, without findings with CM. Four patients did not show clearly identifiable cold spots as LHT and 2 patients showed no changes in the IR images. The remaining 9 patients did not show clearly identifiable cold spots as LHT, but the diagnosis with CM was also ambiguous. Conclusions: The results of this small (pilot) study do not clearly support the value of IR images for the diagnosis of LHTs, but they do not refute this approach. Diagnosis of LHT might be hampered due to the existence of different types of LHTs. Usage of IR images can apparently detect LHTs before they can be diagnosed with CM. Further targeted investigations are required to make statements about the usability of this method.

Abstract:
Nowadays, flexibility through energy storage constitutes a key feature for the optimal management of energy systems. Concerning thermal energy, Latent Heat Thermal Storage (LHTS) units are characterized by a significantly higher energy density with respect to sensible storage systems. For this reason, they represent an interesting solution where limited space is available. Nevertheless, their market development is limited by engineering issues and, most importantly, by scarce knowledge about LHTS integration in existing energy systems. This study presents a new modeling approach to quickly characterize the dynamic behavior of an LHTS unit. The thermal power released or absorbed by a LHTS module is expressed only as a function of the current and the initial state of charge. The proposed model allows simulating even partial charge and discharge processes. Results are fairly accurate when compared to a 2D finite volume model, although the computational effort is considerably lower. Summarizing, the proposed model could be used to investigate optimal LHTS control strategies at the system level. In this paper, two relevant case studies are presented: (a) the reduction of the morning thermal power peak in District Heating systems; and (b) the optimal energy supply schedule in multi-energy systems.

Abstract:
Free-living nematodes are ubiquitous and play an essential role in ecosystems. However, little is known about their standard life history traits (LHTs), which limits their inclusion in estimations of energy flows and carrying capacities of ecosystems, as well as in modelling population-level responses to toxicants. Thus, we used the hanging-drop method to measure LHTs of Plectus acuminatus with and without exposure to cadmium (2 mg l−1). In controls, the mean lifespan was 68 days and the maximum 114 days. Individuals laid eggs on average 19 days after hatching, while production of offspring peaked at 37 days. Plectus acuminatus individuals were very fertile, producing on average 848 juveniles. Population growth rate of 0.19 was estimated for the control cohort leading to an average population doubling time of 3.65 days. Exposure to cadmium reduced mean lifespan by 62% and affected reproduction as only 22% of individuals produced offspring, leading to a total fertility rate 85% lower than in controls.

Abstract:
A theoretical analysis is presented for the performance study of a Latent Heat Thermal Storage (LHTS) system that contains a phase change material (PCM) dispersed with high conductivity particles. The effect of fraction of dispersed particles in the PCM on energy storage time and heat flux is presented for laminar and turbulent flows, and also analytical expressions are presented for various quantities of interest to study the energy storage capabilities. The combined effect of thermal and flow properties of both the heat transfer fluid (HTF) and the PCM-mixture is also included in the study. It is observed that there exists an optimum fraction of particles to be dispersed in the PCM for maximum energy storage/extraction.

Abstract:
Abstract We have identified, using composite interval mapping, quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting a variety of life history traits (LHTs) in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Using recombinant inbred strains assayed on the surface of agar plates, we found QTL for survival, early fertility, age of onset of sexual maturity, and population growth rate. There was no overall correlation between survival on solid media and previous measures of survival in liquid media. Of the four survival QTL found in these two environments, two have genotype-environment interactions (GEIs). Epistatic interactions between markers were detected for four traits. A multiple regression approach was used to determine which single markers and epistatic interactions best explained the phenotypic variance for each trait. The amount of phenotypic variance accounted for by genetic effects ranged from 13% (for internal hatching) to 46% (for population growth). Epistatic effects accounted for 9–11% of the phenotypic variance for three traits. Two regions containing QTL that affected more than one fertility-related trait were found. This study serves as an example of the power of QTL mapping for dissecting the genetic architecture of a suite of LHTs and indicates the potential importance of environment and GEIs in the evolution of this architecture.

Abstract:
2010/2011
Since from the first Industrial Revolution, energy supply, which feeds human activities, has been characterized by consumption of fossil fuels such as coal, crude oil and gas. This supply model is heavely affected by a dramatic limitation, taht is the idea of feeding an infinite system (such as the human activities energy demand) with a finite (in terms of time) source - fossil fuels. Although this issue was already forecast in the early decades of the last century (e.g. G. Ciamician in The photochemistry of the Future, during The Ninth International Congress of Applied Chemistry - New York), it has been largely neglected until the first oil crisis in the 70s, when public eye become aware of the (social) issue coming from the oil dependence. The exponential growth of Earth population and the consequent increase of energy demand and the environmental and pollution issues that characterized last decades leaded large part of scientific and (marginally) politic community to focusing its endeavours to research of more efficient way of exploiting renewable sources and to the fillip of their usage. The main drawback, which affects the usage of renewable energies, is that the supply, whether it comes from the earth or the sun, is never constant. Day turns to night, winds die down and the geothermal heat from the crust of the earth, although seemingly constant, will eventually diminish. The capability of storing energy and release it on demand, therefore, plays a crucial role in the possibility of exploiting renewable energies. The main target of this PhD study is investigation and design of devices capable of collecting thermal energy. According to the idea of gathering the largest quantity of energy in the most efficient way, as storage strategies it has been decided to adopt the latent heat thermal storage method. Suitable materials for accomplishing this task are Phase Change Materials (PCMs); they are a class of materials capable of collecting and releasing a large amount of energy during melting and freezing process at a temperature that may be useful for anthropic activities, such as air heating&cooling, domestic hot water production, industrial processes and energy production. In this thesis in particular, the existence of a convergence point between the possibility to adopt nano-enhanced material into largely used devices (heat exchangers, boilers etc.) is explored. This research has been, therefore, performed focusing mainly onto two different aspects: the possibility of improving thermal properties (melting enthalpy) of PCMs by addiction of nano-enhancer materials and on the other hand design and development of systems which imply the usage of PCMs, eventually nano-doped. The structure of this thesis reflects the division of topics and every part represents one of these task: * in the first part, Phase Change Materials a general overview on the state of art of PCMs is presented. A brief description of strategies for thermal storage is discussed and a dissertation on different typologies of PCMs, main advantages and disadvantages coming from their usage is given. The discussion than continues analysing possible ways of modelling the thermal behaviour during melting or freezing process. Both the analytical and numerical approaches are treated; * in the second part, Nanotechnology and Phase Change Materials, dissertation on thermal variations induced by inclusion of carbon nano tubes is carried out. After a snapshot on the state of the art in the field of nano-doping of PCMs, procedures and results of four commercially available paraffin waxes doped with CNTs have been discussed; * in the third part, Design and Phase Change Materials, devices which exploit PCMs have been designed and (numerically) optimized. A panel heat exchanger, capable to accomplish requirements of modularity and short time heat release has been numerically studied and optimized by genetic algorithm; the possibility of using a nano-enhanced material has been explored. Then, a system for avoiding ice formation on pavement surface during winter time has been developed. PCM elements (pipes) embedded into asphalt concrete of road pavement have been modelled using a commercial FE code. 1D and 2D models have been used and coupled with weather data collected in Trieste during the first week of January 2009; * in the last part, Conclusions, final remarks and further developments are discussed.

Abstract:

The object of this proposed study is to explain the ways how three prayer women constitute their spirituality itinerary. Since then I try to reach the following objectives: To identify in life narratives the formation processes and its interlacement with the formation experience; To understand by the ways the spirituality is constituted what is the fundament of the substratum of becoming the self as a form to appropriate the experiences that gave support to the comprehension of “ walking by themselves” ; To point out what were the elements that may be considered as the identifiers of the way that spirituality took form during the human existence. As a researcher I bring as a reflection some concerns, among them, that one to articulate various formation processes of the subject, believing that´s possible, by them to understand what life has taught to these women. I have used two methods: the autobiography through life narratives and the reflexive interview as instruments that guided the analysis and the spirituality construction. During this continuous process of self formation and of knowledge of its own existence that spiritual experiences emerged. There were four official meetings with each prayer woman and another three happened spontaneously. There were no closed questions but data was obtained by free talking of the women object of this research. This means that questions were not exactly the same but they suffered some variances although the focus was the same subject. I started by visiting the Health School of Sobral, then I visited some surrounding areas of the city and two districts until I met some women that were willing to cooperate with the research. Everything happened very simply. I visited them at home and the interviews were recorded. The chapters were organized explaining howthe subjects of the study were chosen, problems were defined, the research approach was established and how the research was conducted. I consider some concepts as very important to understand the interlacement among the development experiences, its context its contend, their identity, their ancestors, their spirituality and the specific time in the narratives. I had also as objective to find out what was in these experiences that became significant learning to them and tried to identify the aspects that were mobilized in the situations were this experience happened. I tried also to understand what life has taught to these women that articulated the various elements of this identity to do spiritual cure by the dynamics of the formation narrative. I tried to link these processes with knowledge and learning within this scenario of adult formation. Spirituality is an unmatched process that runs during all the existence, takes form and expression with the discovery that they have the gift to cure by praying that leads them to understand that they may become female faith healer or quack.

"From Diesel to Battery Power in Underground Mines : A Pilot Study of Diesel Free LHDs."

Abstract:
Load, haul and dump machines (LHDs) are commonly used in underground mines around the world. The machines are used to transport fragmented ore after blasting in the ore body. The main propellant used is diesel which accounts for a large part of the diesel consumed in mines today. This master thesis is a pilot study for further work to be done by LTU and Atlas Copco in a project called SIMS or Sustainable Intelligent Mining Systems, where the aim is to physically demonstrate diesel free LHDs doing productive work in mines. The objective of the thesis was to assess if the integration of battery-powered LHD machines is plausible in today’s underground mines. The aims were to map the current state of the production and to perform risk and job analysis of the new technology in the current systems. A theoretical framework was constructed with focus on safety, risk, hazards and change in work content. Social acceptance was then researched to be able to analyze how the new technology is received. Data gathering was done through interviews, observations, a focus group and reviewing documents while visiting Atlas Copco and two underground mines in Sweden. Diesel and electric-powered LHDs were studied in the mines and battery-powered LHDs were studied at Atlas Copco. The results present the current state of diesel, electric and battery-powered LHDs. How the machines are used in the visited mines and the identified risks with the work is presented along with the mapping of the battery system being developed by Atlas Copco. New risks that the battery system will bring to the work environment were identified using energy and deviation analyzes. The change in work content was discussed using the information from the visits and identifying what tasks will change, disappear and be added with the new technology. A large part of the thesis was analyzing the results with support from the theoretical framework. The analysis showed that a switch from diesel to battery-power would improve the overall health and safety inside the mines. A switch does not change the skill needed to operate the machines but can increase the qualifications for the service personnel. The main obstacles, in terms of social acceptance, with implementing the battery systems in the current state are that the need for constant battery exchange would cause problems in the production, the prejudice that the batteries would increase the consequences of a fire and the initial cost of making the switch. Recommendations for Atlas Copco going forward in the SIMS project were made. They need to emphasizing the safety of the technology to the users, developing the battery exchange so it can be done closer to the stopes and involve the operators in the projects of SIMS to help them understand the benefits it will have on them directly.

Abstract:
A major technological lever to the industrial development of renewable energy production processes with high efficiency, is the development of an innovative solution to store the energy. This storage device should help to smooth the production period and to follow closely the demand. Among the existing solutions, latent heat thermal storage has many advantages that make today it is the subject of several research and development projects. This technology is based on the principle that certain classes of material, called phase change materials (PCMs), release (during liquid to solid transition) or accumulate (during solid to liquid transition) energy when subjected to a phase change. Upstream of the development of a new storage design, it is essential to understand and master the thermal processes involved in the melting and solidification phase of the material and this knowledge comes through the development of numerical models adapted to the problems encountered. In the particular context of this Phdthesis, the technological process that interests us is that of CSP (Concentrated Solar Power). Funded by ADEME under the STARS Project (Thermal STorage Applied to the expansion of pRoduction of thermodynamic Solar energy), the work done by the LaTEP is to analyze the performance of a storage solution by modeling the latter, considering the thermal and hydraulic phenomena. The modeling work is done with the free source OpenFOAM CFD software in which is developed and implemented by the laboratory, a new module dedicated to the problem we are concerned, namely the resolution of Eulerian (fixed grid) conservation equations for an incompressible fluid in the presence of a solid-liquid phase change dominated by convective motions. Regarding the phase transition problems, various mathematical and numerical methods have been developed to finely consider the physics of these phenomena. After conducting a review of methods in the first part of the Phd thesis, we selected two formulations that we have implemented in OpenFOAM. Once this work done, we have managed to compare the results returned from these formulations by comparing them with experimental results available in the literature and also with analytical cases. This allowed us firstly to strengthen us in the use of our solvers and the accuracy of the obtained results and secondly to highlight the differences between the solutions returned by each formulation. After that, we wanted to assess the impact of the equation of state used to connect the enthalpy to the temperature, essential for closing the thermodynamic equations. This comparison was made by the simulation of a thermal storage exchanger (2D simulation) and by analyzing the performance of this latter during the charge phase, the discharge one and during several series of cycles. The obtained results allowed us to conclude about the importance of a good characterization of PCM in order to model their behavior as accurately via the mathematical formulation and the most suitable state law

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present paper describes the application of computational fluid-dynamics (CFD) for the analysis of the melting process in a single vertical shell-and-tube heat exchanger. The computations are based on a 2D axial-symmetric model that takes in account the phase change phenomenon by means of the enthalpy method. The numerical studies aimed at clarifying the importance of the different heat transfer mechanisms with a particular focus on natural convection demonstrating its fundamental importance on the phase change process by enhancing the heat transfer between HTF and solid PCM. the paper discusses the effect of two different common performance enhancement techniques: dispersion of high conductive nano-particles in the PCM and the introduction of radial fins. An extensive thermo-fluid dynamic study has been undertaken exploring the effect on the thermal performance enhancement of particle volume fraction and fins. The analysis shows that in comparison to the standard design, the performances of the LHTS unit in terms of charging time could be improved by up to 40 % for nano-particle enhancement. When fins are considered charging time can be reduced to one-third of its original value. Significant improvements are also achieved during the solidification process: discharge time is reduced of 33% with fins enhancement.

Abstract:
Recently, Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) is attracting more research attentions because it can store the excessive heat from the solar field and extend the power generation at night, CSP can also levelized the mismatch between energy demand and supply. To make CSP technology competitive, thermal energy storage (TES) system filled with energy storage media is a critical component in all CSP plant. TES system can be operated by using sensible materials, phase change materials (PCMs) or a combination of both. Because the phase change materials can store more heat due to the latent during the melting/freezing process, it becomes promising to use PCM in latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) system for large scale CSP application. Unfortunately, LHSS has relatively low energy storage efficiency compared to SHSS alone because of the fact that LHSS has more parameters to be controlled and optimized. To realize a complete utilization of PCM and a high energy storage/extraction efficiency and a high exergetic efficiency, one approach is to adopt a cascade configuration of multiple PCMs modules in TES tank, which can also be called as a cascade latent heat thermal energy storage (CLHTES) system. The melting temperatures of the PCMs placed in the TES tank should be cascaded from low to high temperature, where the latent heat of PCM can completely be used to absorb the heat from the solar field for energy storage purpose. Due to the complexity of a CLHTES system, it is necessary to provide a comprehensive study from the heat transfer perspective. This paper presents a preliminary parametric study of CLHTES system using a previously developed enthalpy-based 1D transient model for energy storage/extraction in CLHTES system. The effects of material properties (such as latent heat, specific heat at solid and liquid phase) and CSP plant operation conditions (such as charging/discharging time period) are to be explored. The results from the preliminary parametric study is expected to be beneficial to the community of solar thermal engineering.

Abstract:
Objectives. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) Program wants learning health systems (LHSs) to use the evidence from its reports to improve patient care. In 2018, to improve uptake of EPC Program findings, the EPC Program developed a project to enhance LHSs’ adoption of evidence to improve the quality and effectiveness of patient care. AHRQ contracted with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) and its partners to convene a panel of senior leaders from 11 LHSs to guide the development of tools to help health systems use findings from EPC evidence reports. The panel’s contributions led to developing, implementing, and evaluating two electronic tools to make the EPC report findings more accessible. AIR evaluated the LHSs’ use of the tools to understand (1) LHSs’ experiences with and impressions of the tools, (2) how well the tools helped them access evidence, and (3) how well the tools addressed barriers to LHS use of the EPC reports and barriers to applying the evidence from the reports. Data sources. (1) Implementation meetings with 6 LHSs; (2) interviews with 27 health system leaders and clinical staff who used the tools; and (3) website utilization metrics. Results. The tools were efficient and useful sources of summarized evidence to (1) inform systems change, (2) educate trainees and clinicians, (3) inform research, and (4) support shared decision making with patients and families. Clinical leaders appreciated the thoroughness and quality of the evidence reviews and view AHRQ as a trusted source of information. Participants found both tools to be valuable and complementary. Participants suggested optimizing the content for mobile device use to facilitate health system uptake of the tools. In addition, they felt it would be helpful to have training resources about tool navigation and interpreting the statistical content in the tools. Conclusions. The evaluation shows that LHSs find the tools to be useful resources for making the EPC Program reports more accessible to health system leaders. The tools have the potential to meet some, but not all, LHS evidence needs, while exposing health system leaders to AHRQ as a resource to help meet their information needs. The ability of the EPC reports to support LHSs in improving the quality of care is limited by the strength and robustness of the evidence, as well as the relevance of the report topics to patient care challenges faced by LHSs.
