Abstract:
The lacustrine fine-grained sedimentary rocks in the upper interval of the fourth member of the Eocene Shahejie Formation (Es4s) in the Dongying Depression are important shale oil exploration targets in Bohai Bay Basin. They are widely distributed and rich in organic matter. In this study, samples were observed under the optical microscope and FESEM, combined with geochemical test and physical property analysis to study the sedimentary characteristics and reservoir characteristics of them. Nine lithofacies are recognized based on the mineral composition, the content of organic matter and the beddings. The middle-high organic laminated calcareous fine-grained sedimentary rocks (LF1) and the middle-high organic laminated mixed fine-grained sedimentary rocks (LF2) resulted from seasonal sediment variations and settled by suspension in the deep lake. The middle-high organic flaggy mixed fine-grained sedimentary rocks (LF3), the middle-high organic flaggy calcareous fine-grained sedimentary rocks (LF4), the middle-high organic massive calcareous fine-grained sedimentary rocks (LF5) and the middle organic massive mixed fine-grained sedimentary rocks (LF6) were formed by redeposition. The low organic massive argillaceous fine-grained sedimentary rocks (LF7), the low organic massive felsic fine-grained sedimentary rocks (LF8) and the low organic massive mixed fine-grained sedimentary rocks (LF9) are affected by the terrigenous input events. The pore structures vary in different beddings which are influenced by the kinds and arrangement of minerals and particles. In the laminated lithofacies, the ink-bottle-shaped pores are dominant. In the flaggy and massive lithofacies, the ink-bottle-shaped pores and the slit-shaped pores coexist. LF1 and LF2 are the best target for shale oil exploration and the LF3, LF4, LF5 and LF6 are the second. The deposition processes control the lithofacies and reservoir characteristics of the fined-grained sedimentary rocks.

Abstract:
Learning from Demonstrations (LfD) via Behavior Cloning (BC) works well on multiple complex tasks. However, a limitation of the typical LfD approach is that it requires expert demonstrations for all scenarios, including those in which the algorithm is already well-trained. The recently proposed Learning from Interventions (LfI) overcomes this limitation by using an expert overseer. The expert overseer only intervenes when it suspects that an unsafe action is about to be taken. Although LfI significantly improves over LfD, the state-of-the-art LfI fails to account for delay caused by the expert's reaction time and only learns short-term behavior. We address these limitations by 1) interpolating the expert's interventions back in time, and 2) by splitting the policy into two hierarchical levels, one that generates sub-goals for the future and another that generates actions to reach those desired sub-goals. This sub-goal prediction forces the algorithm to learn long-term behavior while also being robust to the expert's reaction time. Our experiments show that LfI using sub-goals in a hierarchical policy framework trains faster and achieves better asymptotic performance than typical LfD.

Abstract:
The length of Chlamydomonas flagella is tightly regulated. Mutations in four genes—LF1, LF2, LF3, and LF4—cause cells to assemble flagella up to three times wild-type length. LF2 and LF4 encode protein kinases. Here we describe a new gene, LF5, in which null mutations cause cells to assemble flagella of excess length. The LF5 gene encodes a protein kinase very similar in sequence to the protein kinase CDKL5. In humans, mutations in this kinase cause a severe form of juvenile epilepsy. The LF5 protein localizes to a unique location: the proximal 1 μm of the flagella. The proximal localization of the LF5 protein is lost when genes that make up the proteins in the cytoplasmic length regulatory complex (LRC)—LF1, LF2, and LF3—are mutated. In these mutants LF5p becomes localized either at the distal tip of the flagella or along the flagellar length, indicating that length regulation involves, at least in part, control of LF5p localization by the LRC.

Abstract:
AbstractThe large fish indicator (LFI) was developed to support the North Sea fish community Ecological Quality Objective (EcoQO) pilot study, intended to establish an operational ecosystem approach to management. Subsequently, procedures established in the North Sea were applied to the Celtic Sea to derive an LFI and target specific to this region. The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requires EU Member States sharing marine regions to cooperate using the Regional Seas Conventions, and using indicators already adopted by them. The MSFD explicitly suggests the LFI as a foodweb indicator, but it could equally well be used to monitor biodiversity. Here, we apply the established rationale to develop an LFI and target specific to the southern Bay of Biscay. Despite declining in the 1990s, the LFI subsequently recovered to near original values in 2008. Previously, relationships between the LFI and fishing pressure have involved lengthy time-lags. We observe a similar relationship, but with shorter lag. The nature of the larger species responsible for much of the change in the LFI may explain this difference, and might also suggest that, in the Bay of Biscay, the LFI is more appropriately used as a biodiversity indicator, rather than a foodweb indicator.

Abstract:
Objective The aim of this research was to study the frequency of Le Fort I osteotomy (LFI) in cleft patients treated according to the protocol of the Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam. Design Retrospective cohort study. Patients 508 cleft patients born between January 1, 1983, and December 31, 1992, were evaluated. Main Outcome Measures Frequency of LFI and correlations with type and extent of cleft, gender, number of previous surgical procedures, age during alveolar augmentation, and missing teeth, respectively. Results 251 patients met the inclusion criteria. Overall, 28 of the 251 patients (11.2%) required LFI: none for cleft lip (0.0%); 2 of 43 (4.7%) for cleft lip and alveolus; 24 of 100 (24.0%) for cleft lip, alveolus, and palate; 2 of 50 (4.0%) for cleft palate; and none for submucous clefts or the miscellaneous group (0.0%). The frequency of LFI increased with the severity of the cleft type. The number of previous surgical interventions is significantly higher in cases with an indication for LFI (p < .001). The frequency of LFI is significantly higher in male cleft patients (p < .05). Conclusions The overall frequency of LFI in the study group was 11.2%; this increased with the severity of the cleft type. A significant difference was noted in the number of previous surgical interventions between patients with and without an indication for an LFI. Delayed closure of the hard palate in the protocol might have influenced the low frequency of LFI.

Abstract:
SUMMARYThe large fish indicator (LFI), or ‘proportion of fish greater than 40 cm length in bottom trawl surveys,’ is a frequently debated indicator of Good Environmental Status in European regional seas. How does the LFI respond to changes in fishing pressure? This question is addressed here through analysis of fine-scale spatial trends in the LFI within the North Sea, compared between two periods of contrasting fisheries management: 1983–1999 and 2000–2012, respectively, before and after the onset of the European Union's fleet reduction scheme. Over the entire period, the LFI has decreased in large parts of the North Sea. However, most of the decline was from 1983–1999; since 2000 the LFI has improved in much of the North Sea, especially in UK waters. Comparison with international effort data shows that those western areas where the LFI has improved correspond with regions where otter trawl effort has decreased since 2000 (and previously was highest in the 1990s), and also with decreases in beam trawl effort. This study provides strong support that recent European effort reduction schemes are now beginning to result in an improved ecosystem state as indicated by the regional-scale improvement in the LFI.

Abstract:
2013/2014
The Planck satellite is the European direct successor of the American WMAP satellite. Planck is the 3rd generation instrument for the CMB study from space. It consists in an array of 74 detectors divided into two instruments, Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) and High Frequency Instrument (HFI) scanning the sky with nine frequencies in the range 30 GHz to 857 GHz. All the detectors observe simultaneously and continuously the sky with an angular resolution varying between ~30 arcmin at the lowest frequencies, and ~5 arcmin, at the highest, and a resolution of the order of ~10^(-6). Planck was lauched in may 2009 and, before the compete switch off in October 2013, the LFI instrument has stably and continuously observed the sky for 1513 operational days (OD), corresponding to eight complete sky surveys. The 2013 Planck data release includes the CMB temperature maps based on the nominal period of the mission, covering the OD from 91 to 563. This thesis describes the characterization of the systematic effects of LFI realized for the 2013 Planck data release, with a particular focus on the 1 Hz spikes effect. From the analysis performed, all the known LFI systematic effects result to be under control and their contribution in the temperature power spectrum is well below the CMB anisotropies signal. From the null tests it is possible to conclude that all the systematic effects are properly corrected in the data analysis and there are no evidence of new unknown systematic effects The 1 Hz spikes effect is due to an unexpected cross-talk between the scientific acquisition and the housekeeping data lines in the LFI read out electronics. It appears as a square wave with 1 Hz frequency signal, added to the output voltages of all the LFI detectors. The channels where this effect is more prominent are the 44 GHz. The spikes removal technique used in the 2013 Planck data release consist in subtracting from data an estimated spikes template. Among the different methods used in the estimation of the spikes template, the filtered template used in the 2013 Planck data release is the more effective. In the 44 GHz channels, where the spikes are corrected in the data, the final contribution on LFI maps power spectra is reduced by two orders of magnitude both in temperature and polarization. Using a unique template for every signal (sky and reference) for each detector to be subtracted from data among the whole mission is justified by the extreme stability of the template, both in amplitude and phase through all the mission. After correcting for the spikes systematic effect, the estimate of the residual spikes signal in maps due to small amplitude fluctuation of the template during the mission allows to conclude that the spikes effect in the LFI maps is completely understood. Since the spikes signal in the 30 GHz and 70 GHz channels is very small, and since the template seems not to be very stable in these frequencies, the possibility of removing spikes even in these channels is still under evaluation. In particular, it is very important to assess the possible introduction of artifacts for these unstable templates as a result of the spikes removal process. By using ll the mission data, in the thesis, it has been studied the possibility to increase the resolution of the templates used in the spikes removal process by producing high resolution templates aimed to better investigate the instabilities in the 30 GHz and 70 GHz templates. In the 44 GHz, the high resolution template give results identical to the filtered template while in the other frequencies, even if the resulting template is more stable, the templates are still dominated by noise. In addition, the high resolution template production allowed to verify the instrument stability up to the resolution of 1/2^(16) s. Moreover it was possible to track the LFI behaviour over all the mission, checking for variations in the spikes template well below the resolution of the 2013 Planck data release templates. This new templates identified 5 OD over the whole mission where the instrument has a variation from its stable behaviour. It has been discovered that all these variations are directly related to major operations performed on the instrument. From a direct comparison between the templates, for the 44 GHz channels, there is no change in the increase of the resolution. The final contribution on LFI maps and the final contribution in the estimate of the cosmological parameters is still under investigation. At the moment it seems not necessary to modify the templates used in the 2013 Planck data release for the 2014 data release. The possibility to introduce the the high resolution spikes template removal in the future Planck data releases is still under investigation.

The implementation of the Law on Access to Information, in Brazil, is still a relatively unexplored subject in view of the recent adoption of the Law 12.527/2011, which entered into force on May 16, 2012, through Decree 7.724 This research aimed to examine how the Universidade Federal da Bahia has been implementing the LAI is happening and how the production and provision of information to the citizens, from the perspective of transparency touted by the Controladoria Geral da União. For this, we used the theoretical parameters, based on studies of Carter, Neuman and Calland which were organized in three dimensions: legal, institutional and social. Through desk research and interviews with the officers of the University, it was possible to develop the case study, a qualitative descriptive approach. With a results obtained, it is concluded that the UFBA been meeting the legal requirements, partly, but is not prepared to the implementation of the necessary procedures to ensure that the implementation of the law effectively happen. Thus, is unprepared to commit to transparency of government information. Keywords:

Abstract:
Different kinds of batteries suit different applications, and consequently several different chemistries exist. In order to better understand the limitations of low temperature performance, a Li-ion battery chemistry normally intended for room temperature use, graphite-Lithium Iron Phosphate, with 1 M LiPF6 ethylene carbonate:diethylene carbonate electrolyte, is here put under testing at -10°C and compared with room temperature cycling performance. Understanding the temperature limitations of this battery chemistry will give better understanding of the desired properties of a substitute using alternative materials. The experimental studies have comprised a combination of battery cycle testing, and surface analysis of the electrodes by Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Results showed that with low enough rate, temperature is less of a problem, but with increased charge rate, there are increasingly severe effects on performance at low temperatures. XPS measurements of low charge rate samples showed similar Solid Electrolyte Interface layers formed on the graphite anode for room- and low temperature batteries, but with indications of a thicker layer on the former. A section of the report handles specific low temperature battery chemistries. The conclusions- and outlook were made by comparing the results found in the study with earlier findings on low temperature Li-ion batteries and present possible approaches for modifying battery performance at lowered temperatures.

Nownes, Anthony J., and Colin Glennon. "An Experimental Investigation of How Judicial Elections Affect Public Faith in the Judicial System." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2015. https://doi.org/10.1111/lsi.12159.

Abstract:
Judicial scholars have often speculated about the impact of elections on the administration of justice in the state courts. Yet relatively little research has concerned itself with public perceptions of state court selection methods. Of particular interest is the concept of legitimacy. Do elections negatively affect public perceptions of judicial legitimacy? Bonneau and Hall (2009) and Gibson (2012) answer this question with an emphatic “No.” Judicial elections, these studies show, are not uniquely troublesome for perceptions of institutional legitimacy. This article aims to extend the findings of Bonneau and Hall and Gibson via a laboratory experiment on the effects of elections on public perceptions of judicial legitimacy. In the end, we find that because elections preempt the use of the other main selection method—appointment—they actually enhance perceptions of judicial legitimacy rather than diminish them.

Abstract:

This project, a film made of short video clips and still photographs, is a continuation of my observation of the urban birds of L.A County: pigeons, seagulls, and herons. There are two other sides that complete the triangle my work relies on: the Hispanic community, which is indirectly present in this document, and me, the outsider/wanderer. This triangle captures an essence of strangeness and uninvited existence that I find in this town, but can be found anywhere else.

I chose the format of the projected film because of its "lack of weight." I like the idea that the project has no real physical presence, that it is all data, or memory. Edward Limonov wrote that back in Russia, he had many books, but immigrants do not have books and now he has only three. I feel much the same about art objects and I find it appropriate that once I leave, carrying a compact disc in its case with me, I will leave no traces behind.

Abstract:
Among the discussions concerning Hobbes political philosophy, the relations between the law of nature and the civil law raise great controversy. Two points related to the law of nature remain unsolved. The first one deals with its imperative character: does the law of nature have the force of a true command in the state of nature or is it a mere recommendation? The second point deals with its relation with the civil law: are they the same, are they contradictory, are they complementary? Aiming to answer these questions, this work analyses three different uses of the law of nature concept as a rational precept, as a command of God and as moral law , two uses of the civil law concept as a command of the sovereign and as a rule for the subjects actions , as well as the relations that Hobbes states between those two concepts.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate whether the law has been properly used to equip the public policy on culture in Brazil. Firstly, it discuss the national and international legal framework on cultural rights and key concepts, contextualizes the public policy on culture in Brazil, with the changes taking place since the return to democracy and their reflections in the productive sector and the cultural consumption, then analyzes the proposed reform of the Rouanet Law taken by Lula government, with the purpose of extracting the points that really could only be modified by law and identify what could be changed through regulation. Finally, it looks for the reasons why the proposal for Rouanet Law reform was so comprehensive, and examines the relationship between law and public policy on culture in Brazil, specifically the possibility to reinterpret the text and build a new normative content based on new policy without formally amending the law. It concludes that the constructive interpretation of the Rouanet Law would be able to answer forcefully to most social and governmental desire for reform financing of culture system in Brazil.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Laser-based fault injection (LFI) attacks are powerful physical attacks with high precision and controllability. Therefore, attempts have been in the literature to model and simulate the laser effect in pre-silicon digital designs. However, these efforts can only model the laser effect on small SPICE or TCAD circuits of individual standard cells. This paper proposes security properties and a machine-learning assisted layout signoff framework in verifying the full-chip layout's resiliency against LFI. In the framework, we leveraged the commercial SoC power integrity sign-off tool to inject the Gaussian laser current to any spot in the layout, by considering different layout features such as power distribution network, decoupling capacitor placement, metal geometry, instance switching power, etc. To avoid exhaustive analysis of all layout spots regardless of LFI criticality, we use security properties to drive the assessment and identify critical areas. We then use SPICE simulations and machine learning to develop cell-level laser fault models under different laser-induced transient current intensities. This laser cell library is used during full-chip LFI feasibility analysis for the cells inside laser illumination, enabling precise layout -level design fix for critical cells failing the fault injection threshold. Finally, we show the effectiveness of the proposed framework by analyzing the fully implemented AES design layout.

Full text
Abstract:
The Goldenville horizon in the Baie Verte Peninsula is an important stratigraphic horizon that hosts primary (Cambrian to Ordovician) exhalative magnetite and pyrite and was a chemical trap for younger (Silurian to Devonian) orogenic gold mineralization. The horizon is overlain by basaltic flows and volcaniclastic rocks, is intercalated with variably coloured argillites and cherts, and underlain by mafic volcaniclastic rocks; the entire stratigraphy is cut by younger fine-grained mafic dykes and coarser gabbro. Lithogeochemical signatures of the Goldenville horizon allow it to be divided into high-Fe iron formation (HIF; >50% Fe2O3), low-Fe iron formation (LIF; 15-50% Fe2O3), and argillite with iron minerals (AIF; <15% Fe2O3). These variably Fe-rich rocks have Fe-Ti-Mn-Al systematics consistent with element derivation from varying mineral contributions from hydrothermal venting and ambient detrital sedimentation. Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized rare earth element (REE) signatures for the HIF samples have negative Ce anomalies and patterns similar to modern hydrothermal sediment deposited under oxygenated ocean conditions. The PAAS-normalized REE signatures of LIF samples have positive Ce anomalies, similar to hydrothermal sediment deposited under anoxic to sub-oxic conditions. The paradoxical Ce behaviour is potentially explained by the Mn geochemistry of the LIF samples. The LIF have elevated MnO contents (2.0-7.5 weight %), suggesting that Mn from hydrothermal fluids was oxidized in an oxygenated water column during hydrothermal venting, Mn-oxides then scavenged Ce from seawater, and these Mn-oxides were subsequently deposited in the hydrothermal sediment. The Mn-rich LIF samples with positive Ce anomalies are intercalated with HIF with negative Ce anomalies, both regionally and on a metre scale within drill holes. Thus, the LIF positive Ce anomaly signature may record extended and particle-specific scavenging rather than sub-oxic/redox-stratified marine conditions. Collectively, results suggest that the Cambro-Ordovician Taconic seaway along the Laurentian margin may have been completely or near-completely oxygenated at the time of Goldenville horizon deposition.

Jitfa’ dawl u jenfasizza l-importanza ta’ gruppi u netwerks ta’ appoġġ li jgħinu n-nies jadattaw għal ħafna bidliet li ġġib il-fibromijalġja, u sabiex dawn xorta jkomplu jiffjorixxu minkejja l-isfidi u l-konsegwenzi sostanzjali li jaffaċċjaw.

Abstract:
There is abundant evidence that leadership development leads to positive impact. But how do we define impact, and what factors should be considered when assessing the results of leadership development? Our comprehensive framework is specifically relevant to leadership development and defines four levels of impact (individual, group, organizational, and societal) as well as three factors that contribute to its effectiveness (leader characteristics, leadership solution, and context). Understanding the four levels will enable organizations to clarify the goals and purpose of their development initiatives and know where to focus measurement. Attending to the contributing factors can help organizations understand the results they are getting and take appropriate steps to maximize the impact of their development initiatives.
