Abstract:
This contribution is intended to be a descriptive and analytical study of the vehicular lexical processes of humor in the revolutionary discourse of the Algerian Hirak. Our reflection revolves around the following problem: what are the most productive lexical creation processes for humor in the revolutionary discourse of Hirak in Algeria? Our study would be quantitative in the measure of making statistics on the number of lexes generated by each process and qualitative in the sense of resorting to the contextualization in order to find the source meaning of humor for each lexis. For the purposes of this present research, we have collected 54 lexes that appeared in the revolutionary speech on Facebook pages, from 22 February 2019 until 31 October 2020, a period of moments of popular protest, known as Algerian Hirak, in fact, we first try to classify the collared lexis according to the categories of humor, taking inspiration from the work of P. Charaudeau (2006), then we identify the different creative processes mobilized in each category, in us. Referring to the typology of Pruvost/Sablayrolles (2016).

Abstract For many years, people have considered lexis and grammar separately in the context of teaching and learning English. In the assessment of second language writing, lexis and grammar continue to be considered separately. However, recent corpus studies have questioned this approach and argued that lexis and grammar are fundamentally inseparable. While the assessment of lexis and grammar as two distinct qualities lends face validity to assessment criteria, the corpus literature suggests that raters may not be able to accurately distinguish the two. The current study examines the ability of raters to separate lexis and grammar when using an analytic rating scale to assess timed essays. In this experiment, the lexical content of 27 essays was manipulated before rating in order to determine the effect of lexical accuracy, lexical variation and lexical richness on lexis and grammar scores. From the results, it seems that raters are sensitive to lexical accuracy, but not lexical variation nor lexical richness. In addition, the manipulation of lexical qualities had a significant effect on grammar scores but not on lexis scores, supporting the idea that raters find it challenging to distinguish lexis from grammar

Debido a que la Modernidad recobró el prestigio de la democracia como régimen, la democracia se erigió como una revolución en las soterradas formas absolutistas de poder, al tiempo que se constituyó como el significante del “sufragio universal”, la “representación”, las “mayorías”, la “igualdad política…”. Sin embargo, todo indica que estos nuevos significados de carácter liberal no son coherentes con las auténticas cualidades del término “democracia” y que al parecer la creencia de que vivimos regidos por gobiernos democráticos no es más que un espejismo. Con el objetivo de elucidar la tensión entre democracia auténtica y democracia aparente, se propuso relacionar por medio del método sintético dos categorías superficialmente aisladas e incompatibles: el signo lingüístico y la democracia, en aras de corroborar si hay o no armonía entre significantes y significados, pues de la solidez del signo político evocado depende la correspondencia entre práctica y teoría, praxis kai lexis. Igualmente, en el escrito se trazaron vasos comunicantes con las categorías de ética y moral, bajo la hipótesis de que mientras la ética inspira a reflexionar sobre los significados, en este caso, las cualidades de “sufragio universal”, “representación”, “expresión de mayorías” e “igualdad política” que se le han endilgado a la democracia; la moral incita a sacralizar los significantes, esto es, la forma de gobierno democrática por el solo hecho de ser antigua, independiente a los significados atribuidos. Finalmente, se logró concluir que la democracia moderna es una anulación de la acción humana, un espejismo en el cual coinciden lo bueno y lo injusto, la moral y la negación de la ética.

Abstract:
In modern Tuvan, religious lexis is actively evolving as a part of Tuvan lexis in general. It consists of several parts: Shamanist terms, Buddhist terms, and terms common for both religious systems, with the latter mostly involving ritual terms. Religious lexis reflects the entire Tuvan nation’s spiritual life and its history and continues to evolve by its own resources and loanwords from Mongolian, Tibetan, and Russian languages. Most loanwords are Buddhist. Before 1930, Buddhist lexis would be borrowed orally. Later, most religious terms were effectively forgotten and existed as passive vocabulary. Starting with the 1990s, religious lexis has become active again and is constantly enriched by Tuvan words and loanwords, particularly Buddhist terms. Translations play a significant role in this process, with the Russian language serving as an intermediary between Tuvan and Buddhist texts translated from Tibetan, English, and German. The variety and instability in religious lexis are due to a large number of loanwords and different forms of word spelling.

Abstract:
The paper is the analysis of Ćopić’s novel Delije na Bihaću, i. e. of its marked lexis, which is divided into emotionally-expressive lexis and stylistically marked lexis. There are different typologies of lexis in our language (see e. g. Halilović/Tanović/Šehović 2009). This study, however, employs the classification offered by Katnić-Bakaršić (2007). The analysis includes idioms, loanwords and diminutives extracted from Ćopić’s final novel. Seeking the best way to describe experiences and impressions, Ćopić opted for emotive, inherently expressive language. The analysis of native idiomatic and lexical specifics of the novel reveals the extent to which the use of authentic lexis contributes to a more convincing and credible characterization of characters and gives a clearer picture of the social and linguistic aspects in Krajina during that particular period.

This research discusses the realization of affect as a part of interpersonal meaning in a talk show of Mata Najwa on stage “Semua Karena Ahok”. The research is a descriptive qualitative research. The source of data in this research is the dialogue of Najwa Shihab which contains polarity and lexis attitudinal. The result shows that Mata Najwa on stage “Semua Karena Ahok” has three patterns of polarity and lexis appears in talk show; 1) positive polarity with positive attitudinal lexis, means positive, 2) positive polarity with negative attitudinal lexis, means negative and 3) negative polarity with negative attitudinal lexis, means negative. Najwa Shihab expresses positive attitude to Ahok but neutral to other participants. Najwa Shihab also express both positive and negative to the topic of the dialogue such as Jakarta, Mata Najwa on Stage, and traffic in Jakarta.

Non-invasive diagnostic markers are needed to ease the diagnosis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) among patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) LeXis is related to cholesterol metabolism and hepatic steatosis in mice, and its batch genome conversion in humans is TCONS_00016452. Here, we aimed to evaluate the potential of lncRNA LeXis as a non-invasive diagnostic marker for NASH. We analyzed a total of 44 NAFLD patients whose diagnosis was confirmed by a pathologist through analysis of a percutaneous liver biopsy. The expression of LeXis in the plasma of NAFLD patients with and without NASH was compared using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The expression of plasma LeXis was significantly higher in patients with NASH than in those with NAFL (8.2 (5.0–14.9); 4.6 (4.0–6.6), p = 0.025). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.743 (95% CI 0.590–0.895, p < 0.001), and a sensitivity of 54.3% and specificity of 100% could be achieved for NASH diagnosis. Low LeXis was independently associated with NASH diagnosis in patients with NAFLD (p = 0.0349, odds ratio = 22.19 (5% CI, 1.25–395.22)). Therefore, circulating lncRNA LeXis could be a potential non-invasive diagnostic biomarker for NASH.

Lexis is one essential component of language and language development. Limited lexical knowledge can lead EFL learners to frustration and demotivation. To reach a higher level of development in the four basic communication skills, learners should have a basis of lexis that allows them to do so. One of the factors affecting the ongoing development of communicative competence is neglecting the systematic teaching of lexis. Teachers’ lack of knowledge of the lexical field has contributed negatively to this current situation. To meet these needs, this article reviews concepts such as lexis/vocabulary, lexical competence and knowledge and size and depth of lexical knowledge. It discusses new perspectives that could help language teachers develop conceptual knowledge to handle lexical instructional practice.

Abstract:
The present paper aims to define the term «basic lexis» of Chinese pedagogical discourse. We identify pedagogical discourse as a systematic process of interaction between speakers within the pedagogical situation, where participants use extralinguistic, pragmalinguistic and linguistic sign systems. The basis of pedagogical discourse, as we understand, is the text. Pedagogical discourse as a unit of speech level under certain conditions unfolds around a static formation with a complete and established form – the text, as a unit of language level. The word most clearly manifests its functions as a lexical unit of language only in text. The word is the central functional and structural unit of the language system; all other language units are somehow connected with the word. A recent review of literature on the topic found that there is no clear definition of «basic lexis». Given that our definition of «basic lexis» is based on the results from such analyses. The authors' definition of «basic lexis» is proposed. The term is explained by the authors as the core vocabulary, a list of the most commonly used words necessary for learning languages on different levels. The recent researches on determining the list of word that is considered as «basic lexis» are presented and analyzed. It has been pointed out that frequency is considered to be the main criteria in the process of determining the list of basic lexis.

Abstract After the First World War and the Danube Monarchy, Transylvania became a part of the Kingdom of Romania on December 1, 1918. The desired minority rights played an important role for the Transylvanian Saxons. The relationships with Hungary and Romania were reflected in the media coverage by the Transylvanian newspaper Siebenbürgisch-Deutsches Tageblatt. The authors created awareness on their concerns by using ideological vocabulary. Such political lexis acts as an appeal to the recipients. There is a clearly identifiable dichotomy: On the one side, negatively connoted lexis arises for the former political conditions in the Dual Monarchy. On the other side, positively connoted lexis appears for the needs and for the behavior of the Transylvanian Saxons and for the concepts of new political conditions that were published in the newspaper. This dichotomy consists of ideological vocabulary and lexis in common language.

Abstract:
The article compares the lexis of the Kostel dialect of the Slovenian language and the dialect of the villages Pitve and Zavala, which belongs to the South Chakavian vernacular of the Croatian language. The study is based on lexicographic data. The analyzed dialects of the Slovenian and Croatian languages contain 17.08 % of common lexis. 19.58 % (217 in each dialect) of the common lexis are loan words. Both among common and differential words, Germanisms are prevalent in the Slovenian dialect as well as Romanisms in the Croatian dialect. Many internationalisms came into the Slovenian dialect through the German language, and into Croatian through Italian and its dialects. Two dialects also share several Turkisms; in addition, the lexis of the Kostel dialect of the Slovenian language contains Romanisms that could find different ways into it, through other Slovenian dialects or the Croatian language.

In a prospective analytical cohort study or a study involving a longer follow up, changing age of participants influence the relationship between exposure and outcome. Usually age at entry is incorporated in the regression model to adjust for age. However, this fails to fully explain and adjust for changing age. For this Lexis expansion, a concept by Wilhelm Lexis, allows the analyst to expand the observations as per age bands and check for confounding and interaction by changing age. Lexis expansion assumes the rates to be constant within an age band.

Abstract:
It has been commonly reported by teachers and learners the strong and positive relationship between lexis and reading comprehension. This claim has been usually grounded on experience. In consequence, this paper attempts to find research-based evidence to support the connection between lexis and reading comprehension. To do this, a review of 128 studies was conducted using a set of criteria, after which thirteen studies were selected and screened to look for specific patterns. Salient themes emerged from the analysis: lexical coverage, direct instruction, lexical knowledge (breadth and depth), incidental and intentional learning and receptive and productive lexical knowledge. The analysis supports the connection between lexis and reading comprehension not only in EFL, but also in ESL and L1 contexts. In line with it, the research suggests that teachers should focus on systematic lexis instruction since it aids learners to increase both lexical knowledge and reading comprehension gains.

The peculiarities of functioning of demonological lexis in the works of Mykola Gogol in the phi­lo­sophical and linguocultural perspectives are considered in the article. Demonological lexis is determined to be one of the essential segments of ethnocultural representation. It is projected on linguistic culture and creates a peculiar semiotic culture of a particular ethnic group. Ukrainians’ belief in non-Christian culture various mystical forces along with sincere faith in one God, promotes active development of their spiritual culture and philosophical worldview. It is reflected in the artistic heritage. The purpose of the article is the analysis of Ukrainian demonology in Mykola Gogol’s works. The subject of the research is demonological lexis in Mykola Gogol’s works. The methods such as analysis and synthesis, descriptive, observation, contextual-interpretive, lin­guis­tic-stylistic were used for achieving the goal. Ukrainian demonology is proved to be a part of Slavic mythology identity and its attributive element. The philosophical aspect of the article is realized in demonological magic, the connection of the corporeal, spiritual, soul with the body, psychophysiological phenomena, altered states of reality etc. The authors analyzed the existing classifications of demonological lexis and defined that the Ukrainian demonological lexis forms structural, impaired, open microsystem in its constant development.

On the basis of the analysis of different types of Polish, Ukrainian and Belarusian dictionaries, the author draws a conclusion that differential dictionaries that contain lexis from dialect areas of different dialectal classification do not show objective linguistic reality. He suggests that the description of lexis made according to the criterion of the opposition between dialect and literary language should be replaced by the opposition between a dialect and other dialects within one national language.

Digital photography terminology system is an open and quite actively developing system that is shown in the variety of terminological units and means of their formation. In general, the English digital photography terminology can be characterized as dynamical one. The article is devoted to the study of main dynamical processes taking place in the English digital photography terminology system. Special attention is paid to the processes of terminologization, determinologization, terminological borrowings, reterminologization and transterminologization. There is a constant exchange between the general and terminological lexis, as a result of which determinologization of special lexis, terminologization of the general lexis and transterminologization happen. As a result of reterminologization and transterminologizationterminological units with the identical forms, but different meanings appear in variousscientific-technical terminology systems. These processes are mainly responsible for the replenishment and renewal of terminological lexis, including the sphere of digital photography of the modern English language.

In this article, I argue that whereas Lewis Carroll builds the fantastic world of Alice’s dreams primarily through narration, Hans Christian Andersen uses patterns of lexical choices that recur throughout his opus to build a universe divided solely in terms of a distinction between what is genuine and what is artificial; and this distinction is a central player in all of his work. Arguably, therefore, attention to Andersen’s wider corpus, and to his use of lexis in it, are key to producing translations of Andersen’s work that reflect its essence.

The video game industry is today one of the most rapidly developing branches of the entertainment industry. Such corporations as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are increasing their investment engagement in the manufacture of gaming hardware (e.g. computers, consoles, and tablets), and in game development for various platforms. There has developed and continues to expand an extensive terminology which due to the increasing consolidation of the user base is progressing towards producing a sociolect. Linguists have not yet examined the lexis of gamers which is why it must be studied considering the extent of the phenomenon and the sheer size of the gamer community. Video gamers form a large group. At this point it must be stressed that the gamer community and the lexis specific for it does not exist in isolation. The lexis used by gamers continues to permeate outside the community, e.g. to other media or the colloquial language. The author of this article conducted a survey to check whether the lexis of video gamers is known to random respondents. This article presents the results of the survey.

There are same chronological diversified lexis layers In the Bible edited by Jan Leopolita and published in Cracow in 1561. The analysis of Polish equivalents for the Greek lexeme γάμος (or its Latin equivalents in the Vulgate – nuptiae, nuptialis) ‘a marriage, wedding, weddingceremony; plur: a wedding-feast’, i. e. swadziebny, gody, wesele, referring to empirical system and text data, acquired from lexica of the historic Polish and from texts of other Renaissance Polish renderings of the New Testament, proved chronological diversity of the equivalents. The lexeme swadziebny belongs to an older lexis layer, probably representing the lexicon of the former translation, perhaps medieval. The lexeme wesele represents a new lexis layer which may have been introduced into the text by Jan Leopolita, as the effect of his editorial efforts. Chronological status of the lexeme wesele in the analyzed Biblical rendering lexicon is ambiguous. It should be considered as an evidence of an traditional lexis layer. It may have been introduced into the text as a substitute of the lexeme swadziebny.

This article provides a developmental description of the lexis used by an academic discourse community in formation. Casual conversations of six post-graduate students, native speakers of English, were recorded in the Applied Linguistics common room in Edinburgh University throughout the 1991-92 course. The central hypothesis was that as common knowledge of the course and shared interpersonal knowledge increase over time, there is an increase in the implicit vocabulary which forms the in-group code, and which depend heavily on the context for their meaning. This article discusses the gradability of contentfulness in lexis in topics about the course, analysing technical terms, proper nouns with metonymical meaning, limited range generic nouns, and general nouns and verbs. It discusses the implicitness of the lexical items that have a pragmatic meaning that only in-group members would understand, and suggests that, for an outsider, the implicitness can be associated with the impenetrability of the dialogue.

This paper is a corpus based study of the cultural meaning of figuration in the Malay lexicon. Initially, polysemy is examined for evidence of figurative conceptualisation at the single word level for two body part terms, mata ‘the eye’ and kaki ‘the foot /leg’. Compound forms are then examined to identify the extent to which similar conceptualisations are found. Finally, figurative phraseological units (simpulan bahasd) are examined for figurative conceptualisations. We consider the relationship between figurative meaning at the phraseological and lexical levels. The identification of figurative language is made with reference to dictionaries and its saliency is gauged with reference to a corpus of contemporary Malay.

Adequate understanding of emotionally-valued words and correct use of them in children with ASD are crucial for adaptation and socialization in the conditions of modern social environment. Authors disclose the features of the work on the formation of emotionally-valued lexis in senior preschoolers with ASD on the basis of a training experiment conducted in Center for Curative Pedagogics. The methods, tricks and conditions of correctional and habilitation work with 14 children at each stage are described in detail. Specific practical materials and recommendations about formation of emotionally-valued lexis are given.

Abstract This paper investigates the association between language patterns and attitudinal meanings, focusing specifically on adjective complementation patterns and types of attitudes as proposed in the Appraisal framework (Martin & White 2005). The investigation shows that the tripartite division of Attitude into Affect, Judgement and Appreciation can be supported with pattern differentials. The detailed scrutiny of adjective patterns with respect to the attitude system supports Bednarek’s (2009) argument that both aspects of attitudinal lexis (emotion or opinion lexis) and attitudinal target (the entity being evaluated) should be considered in analysing appraisal expressions, which leads to the proposal that Appraisal is in essence instantiated by choices made simultaneously in terms of the attitudinal lexis that is used and the attitudinal target that is involved.

Abstract This article describes onomasiological explorations of Old Frisian and Old English lexis in the semantic field of KINSHIP through a novel, digital approach. In connecting Old Frisian lexis, drawn from the Altfriesisches Handwörterbuch (AFWB), to the overarching structure of A Thesaurus of Old English (TOE), a dataset has been created that shares a semantic framework with the one existing for Old English lexis. The connected resources are shared and analysed using the web application Evoke. Statistical data provided by this tool, such as the degree of lexicalization for this field, facilitates comparative analyses of the two historical languages. As this article demonstrates, the reuse of the onomasiological macrostructure of TOE offers new insights into linguistic and cultural aspects of these two languages and their language communities.

The current state of affairs is characterised as one in which general SLA models have syntax as their core and pay less and variable attention to other linguistic levels, notably lexis. In order to improve the current situation we need involvement from both the vocabulary research community and SLA model builders. It is demonstrated how the former group readily borrows key concepts from psycholinguistics and SLA theory and rethinks them from a lexical point of view. However, such borrowing and recasting is often done in a piecemeal fashion to fit specific research issues. As for SLA model builders, some examples are discussed that are regarded as serious attempts at integrating lexis into a particular acquisition model. One is L2 reading research and vocabulary acquisition through reading, which illustrates a high degree of integration with common research goals and mutual theoretical inspiration. A second example underlines the fact that there is an obvious potential for including lexis in the ‘focus on form’ movement. It is our contention that more attention to lexis should supplement the predominantly grammatical ‘focus on form’ that is the current norm.
