Abstract:
Lewis, according to Kuklick, was ‘a private person’, of ‘unsparing honesty and … utter dedication to the rational pursuit of truth’. He was, Kuklick continues, ‘equally uncompromising in what he expected of his readers, and as a result wrote for and lectured to a tiny group of scholars’. I hope that—since I occasionally find myself borrowing from him and frequently find myself arguing with him—I may count myself as one of the ‘tiny group of scholars’ for whom Lewis wrote. And perhaps, by arguing with him again here, I may persuade some of you of the enduring interest of his work.

Abstract:
Reactions of [(dippe)NiH]2 with benzonitrile and varying concentrations of Lewis acids (primarily BPh3 and BF3) have shown a dramatic variation of reaction rate compared to the same reaction without Lewis acids. When less than one equivalent of Lewis acid is used, the reaction rate is as much as 100 times greater than without Lewis acid. Boron exchange was observed with less than one equivalent of Lewis acid allowing the formation of a Ni(0)–η2-aryl complex (observed by low-temperature NMR and calculations) to which the Lewis acid is postulated to re-coordinate as the rate-limiting step allowing the formation of a stable Ni(II) product. When one equivalent or greater of Lewis acid is used, the reaction shows dramatic inhibition even compared to the reaction without Lewis acid. Lewis acid dissociation can be considered as the rate-limiting step under these conditions. The overall work detailed herein has shown the importance of Lewis acids in the activation of benzonitriles due to the strengthening of the C–N bond allowing for increased stabilization of the products.

Abstract:
In a 6 September, 1959 unpublished letter to Reverend Alan Fairhurst, C.S. Lewis clearly denies Universalism. In a second unpublished letter to Fairhurst dated 9 September, 1959, Lewis offered evidence that he was not an Annihilationist. Both letters are unusual because Lewis was normally hesitant to discuss eschatology, particularly the nature of hell. This essay presents both previously unpublished letters in their entirety, discusses the reasons for their importance, sets them in the context of Lewis' other writings on hell and renders a conclusion, based on Lewis' own words, about his positions on Universalism and Annihilationism.

Abstract:
The conjugated dienamine 4 selectively adds Piers' borane [HB(C 6 F 5 ) 2 ] to give the enamine/borane system 5 , which features a boratirane structure by internal enamine carbon Lewis base to boron Lewis acid interaction. Compound 5 behaves as a C/B frustrated Lewis pair and undergoes typical addition reactions to benzaldehyde, several nitriles and to sulfur dioxide. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Frustrated Lewis pair chemistry’.

Abstract:
Abstract After some passing considerations on the reception of Lewis in Romania, the present paper discusses the role played by Anglicanism in the late personal commitment of C.S. Lewis to the Christian faith, after years of atheism, scepticism, and agnosticism. It argues that in fact Anglicanism contributed very little to Lewis’s (re)conversion to Christianity. Furthermore, the paper agrees with the generally accepted idea that the particular calling that Lewis felt he had, that of being a Christian apologist, made him wary of being associated with the defence of any specific Christian tradition. In virtue of this special calling, Lewis also reacted quite strongly against certain aspects of Anglicanism, like, for instance, the ordination of women to priesthood, which he perceived as an obstacle to ecumenism and, implicitly, to an effective defence of the Christian faith in the public arena. In spite of all this, there is little doubt that Lewis has fully and unreservedly adopted Anglicanism as his preferred version of Christianity. From this particular stance, the life and ministry of C.S. Lewis made a huge public impact in the twentieth century and beyond. In light of the undeniable influence he had on the intellectual and religious scene in the last hundred years, one may ask not so much how Anglican was Lewis, but, rather, ‘why isn’t Anglicanism more like Lewis’.
