McClinch, Christopher C. "Reason, Imagination, and Universalism in C. S. Lewis." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/10111.

Abstract:
Though he is generally known as one of the key voices in conservative Christianity, this thesis demonstrates that C. S. Lewis was in fact far more liberal in his view of salvation than many would expect. Lewis argued for a universalist interpretation of salvation, in which the death of Christ opened up the possibility of salvation for all of humanity, not merely those people who could be identified as Christians. Lewis did believe that people could and did choose Hell over Heaven, however, and still saw evangelism as the duty of every Christian. All of Lewis's writings are in a sense evangelistic, and all attempt to effect the conversion of the reader in the same manner in which Lewis himself was first drawn to Christianity: by baptizing the imagination in the hope that the reason will follow.

Full text
Abstract:
The main interest of the Fontaine research group is in the development of metal-free catalysis with frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP). Dimer formation is known to cause loss of reactivity due to the energetic cost of dimer dissociation. By adding alkyl groups to the Lewis acid moiety of the 1-BH2-2-NR2-C6H4 type FLP can enhance the bulk of the abiphilic molecule, and thus disfavor the formation of the dimer. Those ambiphilic molecules (1-BH2-2-NR2-C6H4) are unstable and require the addition of a Lewis base in order to be isolated. The reactivity of these adducts towards catalytic borylation of N-methylpyrrole has been evaluated. The stability of the dimer seems to prevent degradation of such molecules. The sensitivity of aminoboranes towards protic reagents is known. The investigation of the reactivity of [1-BH2-2-NMe2-C6H4]2 with thiols lead to the discovery of a novel metal-free catalyst for the borylation of thiols. Boron-sulfur bonds are useful yet underutilised reagents. Their ability to undergo Michael addition with enones and thioestérification with esters is discussed. It is a good example of the synthesis of a value-added product made possible by the use of a metal-free catalyst.

Abstract:
Although C. S. Lewis was not a metaphor theorist, the issue of metaphor appears often enough in his writings for one to cull from them a general theoretical view. This thesis attempts to examine Lewis's thoughts on metaphor against the background of modern metaphor theory. Forty or fifty years ago such a study would have been less fruitful, for his views on metaphor so differed from contemporary theorists that their works offered no positive atmosphere in which to approach his work. Now, however, the general tenor of certain streams in metaphor theory has become more amenable to his views. Indeed, it appears that some key issues raised in modern metaphor theory exist in a seminal form in Lewis's writings. While Lewis cannot be put into any one school, modern theory offers the necessary tools with which to approach his discussions of the figure. This thesis, therefore, begins by briefly outlining the history of metaphor theory in so far as it relates to Lewis. The second chapter discusses his metaphysics, since he believed that his views on metaphor had metaphysical implications. The third and fourth chapters present Lewis's view of metaphor' process and function, as gleaned from his writings. Finally, the thesis concludes by relating Lewis's view back to his metaphysics.

Paris 3, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1993PA030014.

Full text
Abstract:
It is often said that imagination is quite alien to reason. But reason tries to understand reality, and so does imagination, especially mythopoeic imagination, whose marvellous stories cannot have nothing to do with the real world. That is the case that c. S. Lewis, a christian and a staunch rationalist, puts forward in and by his whole work. According to him, there is some truth in myth, and we need it to offset the abstract nature of our rational thinking, which falls short of reason as logos. Therefore we must take myth seriously, even from a religious point of view. That does not means that we must take it to be allegorical : myth is no allegory, as can be shown by studying lewis's own stories, which are not allegorical. Myths are based on our acquaintace with "the other world of the spirit", and must be understood as revealing permanent aspects of human experience or subjectivity, in relation to the universe and to god. The last point is most important in lewis's thought : he has sometimes been called a lay theologian, and his imaginative and oblique approach to ultimate reality proves to have given us the outlines of something like a poetic theo-logy

This dissertation describes the development of cooperative catalyst systems that contain an achiral Lewis acid and a chiral Lewis acid that may have overlapping functions but play their independent roles to promote enantioselective C–C bond formations. Chapter 1 provides a summary of recent advances made in the field of enantioselective cooperative catalysis that served as intellectual foundations for this dissertation research. As it will be discussed in the first chapter, key limitations of cooperative catalysis are: (1) undesirable catalyst deactivation which occurs due to acid/base complexation, (2) requirement for base sensitive pronucleophiles and acid sensitive electrophiles, and (3) poor reaction efficiency. In an effort to overcome these fundamental limitations, we have developed “frustrated” Lewis pair (FLP)-based catalyst systems that consist of potent and sterically encumbered Lewis acids used in pair with bulky N-containing Lewis bases. To demonstrate the potential of the novel FLP catalyst system, we describe our work involving the enantioselective Conia-ene-type cyclization (Chapter 2). In the subsequent chapter (Chapter 3), we discuss the application of the FLP catalysts for enantioselective β-amino C–H functionalization reactions

Abstract:
The carbonyl ene reaction, the cyclization of homoallylic and allylic alcohols to double bonds and the anodic cyclization of 1,6-dienes are useful methods in organic synthesis in order to obtain new compounds, with variable substitutions. The purpose of this work deals with the catalysis of these reactions by metal triflates and triflimides, more acidic than classical Lewis Acids. The carbonyl ene reaction with iron (II) triflimide led to the formation of cyclic hydroxylic compounds from aldehydes and ketones with only 0,1 to 10 mol% of catalyst. Ketone derivatives provided also cascade reactions. Five membered ring ethers were obtained by the cyclization of homoallylic alcohols with 1 mol% of Al(OTf)3. The cyclization of allylic alcohols led to five and six membered rings with 5 to 10 mol% of Al(OTf)3. The study of the anodic 1,6-diene cyclization provided a series of five membered ring compounds with addition of one or two methanol molecules with 10 mol% of Ce(OTf)3

Abstract:
This work describes the application of a variety of Lewis bases, encompassing predominantly N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), but also the use of imidazoles, aminopyridines, amidines and isothioureas, as effective catalysts in the dearomatisation of heterocyclic carbonates, predominantly the rearrangement of oxazolyl carbonates to their C-carboxyazlactone isomers by means of the Steglich rearrangement. This rearrangement reaction has been investigated extensively, with the development of simplified reaction procedures and the invention of domino cascade protocols incorporating this transformation. In an attempt to understand the mechanism of this O- to C-carboxylation process, a number of interesting observations have been made. Firstly, the class of NHC has an important factor in promoting the rearrangement, with triazolinylidenes being the most effective. Secondly, an interesting chemoselectivity has been delineated using triazolium-derived NHCs, prepared using weak bases (typically Et₃N) or strong metallated bases; both alkyl and aryl oxazolyl carbonates undergo smooth rearrangement with triazolinylidenes derived from strong metallated bases such as KHMDS, while only aryl oxazolyl carbonates undergo rearrangement using Et₃N. Extensive effort has focused towards the development of asymmetric variants of these protocols, primarily towards the design, synthesis and evaluation of chiral NHC precatalysts. To this end, a number of chiral azolium salts have been prepared, encompassing a number of different NHC classes, including C₁- and C₂-imidazolinium salts, C₂-imidazolium salts and a range of triazolium salts. Efforts towards the asymmetric catalysis of the Steglich rearrangement of oxazolyl carbonate substrates have given an optimal 66% ee. Similar rearrangements have been demonstrated with the related furanyl heterocyclic substrate class, producing a mixture of α- and γ-carboxybutenolides. In contrast to the analogous oxazolyl carbonates, the regioselectivity of this rearrangement is dependent upon the nature of the Lewis base employed. Amidines and aminopyridines give a mixture of the α- and γ- regioisomers with generally the α-regioisomer being preferred, while a triazolium-derived NHC gives rise to predominantly the thermodynamically more stable γ-carboxybutenolide. Using amidines or aminopyridines, this rearrangement has been shown to proceed via an irreversible C-C bond-forming process, but in contrast, the rearrangement using the NHC proceeds via an equilibrium process with an optimised regioselectivity of >98:2 for the γ-carboxybutenolide regioisomer over the α-regioisomer. Whilst the asymmetric variant using chiral NHCs has proven unfruitful, rearrangements using a chiral isothiourea have given high levels of regioselectivity towards the α- regioisomer and with excellent levels of enantiodiscrimination (77–95% ee).

Josef Pieper and C. S. Lewis are two of the main philosophers of the 20th century. This research aims to analyse their thoughts on love and their implications to education. Pieper and Lewis are important scholars who have gained enormous respect in the academic world for their original and profound works as christian thinkers. Their studies on love each author from his own point of view are a must for everyone who is concerned with education. Lewis and Pieper share a language-centered methodology that leads to clarify the common essence of loves (Pieper) and the four loves: affection, friendship, eros and charity (Lewis). And both thinkers are focused on ordinary language. The more love is a misunderstood word the more such a philosophical analysis is required. Education for love, according to Lewis and Pieper, is centered in philosophical anthropology, and this dissertation presents the connection between their conception of love and man and the education that follows.

S. Lewis." Paris 8, 1986. http://www.theses.fr/1989PA080366.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to study the various aspects of c. S. Lewis's theology of history. In all his works, from his fiction down to his religious writings, lewis tries to find back the meaning of time and history, a meaning which can be revealed only if one puts christ at the very centre of reality. When all philosophies of history have failed, and when moral relativism seems to be reigning supreme, it is of paramount importance to open the eyes of the unbeliever onto the work of the holy spirit in this world and to show him how this work stems from the complex form of relationship between nature and supernature. In this respect, the originality of c. S. Lewis's work is that it addresses both reason and imagination : conversion to supernaturalism and to christ is not only the product of an intellectual assent, but also of an awakening of imagination to supernatural reality. The works of c. S. Lewis have thus a twofold aspect, both critical and eschatological; a critical aspect in that it represents an analysis of secular culture, and eschatological in that on this critical foundation lewis builds up a dialectical conception of desire through which are perceived both the end of history and the beginning of the new creation

Abstract:
The essay at hand is a New Historicist reading of C. S. Lewis’ dystopian fantasy novel That Hideous Strength. According to New Historicist theory it is informed by many disciplines, namely, philosophy, history, literary theory, theology, social science, and psychology, and it attempts to lessen injustices of race and class. The essay examines how satire operates in the novel, focusing on its societal targets: totalitarianism, laboratory animals, and education. Lewis’ philosophical idea expressed in his “The Abolition of Man” – that a society that averts from what he calls universal, timeless, objective values will eventually lead to a loss of that which is truly humane – is a main theme of the novel as well as for this essay. Another, complementary, main theme is that a cultivation of the heart is necessary for individuals of society since childhood if society is going to stay humane.

Hartley, Gregory Philip. "Lower Sacraments: Theological Eating in the Fiction of C. S. Lewis." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4329.

Abstract:
For years, critics and fans of C. S. Lewis have noted his curious attentiveness to descriptions of food and scenes of eating. Some attempts have been made to interpret Lewis's use of food, but never in a manner comprehensively unifying Lewis's culinary expressions with his own thought and beliefs. My study seeks to fill this void. The introduction demonstrates how Lewis's culinary language aggregates through elements of his life, his literary background, and his Judeo-Christian worldview. Using the grammar of his own culinary language, I examine Lewis's fiction for patterns found within his meals and analyze these patterns for theological allusions, grouping them according to major categories of systematic theology. Chapter two argues that ecclesiastical themes appear whenever Lewis's protagonists eat together. The ritualized meal progression, evangelistic discourse, and biographical menus create a unity that points to parallels between Lewis's body of protagonists and the church. Chapter three focuses on the sacrament of the Lord's Supper and charges that Lewis's meals which are eaten in the presence of the novel's Christ figure or which include bread and wine in the menu reliably align with the Anglo-Catholic doctrine of the Eucharist. Chapter four studies how sinful eating affects the spiritual states of Lewis's characters. The chapter first shows how Lewis's culinary language draws from Edenic sources, resonating with a very gastronomic Fall of Humanity, then examines how the progressively sinful eating of certain characters signifies a gradual alienation from the Divine. The fifth, and concluding, chapter argues that Lewis's portrayal of culinary desire and pleasure ultimately points to an eschatological theme. This theme culminates near the end of Lewis's novels either through individual characters expressing superlative delight in their food or through a unified congregation of protagonists eating a celebratory feast during the novel's denouement. I close the study by emphasizing how this approach to Lewis's meals offers a complete spiritual analysis of Lewis's main characters that also consistently supports Lewis's own theology.

This dissertation presents a study of the themes of nature and grace in C. S. Lewis' novel The Great Divorce. The first chapter introduces the theories of Mikhail Bakhtin, Julia Kristeva and C. S. Lewis concerning the relation between texts. From that theoretical foundation, the second chapter studies descriptions of the afterlife in the works Lewis borrows from most in The Great Divorce: Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and Valdemar Thisted's Letters From Hell, and observes the way in which Lewis integrates these intertexts into his novel. Finally, in the last two chapters the dissertation examines different characters from The Great Divorce and the way in which they act out different aspects of human nature or divine grace, in order to determine Lewis' position as to the relation between nature and grace and his concept of salvation.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how in his essays and fiction C. S. Lewis voiced opposition to a tendency to idolatry of science and scientific method in the modern world. Accused of being against science and scientists, Lewis was actually opposed to misguided thinking in any realm, most especially "thought about nothing," as he muses in "Meditation in a Toolshed". This thesis attempts a reading of the three science fiction texts of The Cosmic Trilogy, focusing on Lewis's arguments against a variety of fashionable "isms", including scientism, developed discursively in his popular and academic essays. Choosing to write in the science fiction genre, enriching the genre with the addition of a spiritual quest, Lewis highlights weaknesses in earlier examples of the genre, and points to the danger to human dignity that arises from unbalanced thinking that reduces human beings to mechanistic ghosts in machines.

Abstract:
The main focus of this thesis lies in the study of the potential of aluminum chlorofluoride (ACF) as a catalyst for the synthesis of fluorinated compounds. In particular, C−F bond activations of various polyfluorinated compounds were studied, showing the efficiency of this solid Lewis acid catalyst for this type of reaction. The potent greenhouse gas 2-chloro-1,1,1,2-tetrafluoropropane was successfully transformed into the dehydrofluorination product 2-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene under mild conditions. Similarly, transformation of pentafluoropropane isomers, such as 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane, 1,1,1,2,2- pentafluoropropane and 1,1,1,2,3-pentafluoropropane was also investigated using ACF as a catalyst. It was evidenced that the primary CH2F group present in 1,1,1,2,3-pentafluoropropane was easily activated without the need for a hydrogen source. In contrast, to activate CF2 groups, a hydrogen source such as HSiEt3 was required, generating a variety of products. Alternatively, successful hydrofluorination reactions of several substrates were conducted by synthesizing a new material, based on the loading of hydrogen fluoride (HF) at the surface of ACF. This HF-loaded ACF was deeply studied using a wide range of characterization methods. For the bulk, MAS NMR spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS), Powder X-Ray Diffraction (P-XRD), and thermoanalysis were performed, revealing a slight reorganization of the bulk towards a better-ordered matrix and the formation of polyfluoride structure interacting with the surface of ACF. The BET model was used for the surface area determination, and the pore size analysis was established using the non local density functional theory (NLDFT). Finally, various probe molecules were adsorbed at the surface of HF-loaded ACF to determine the acidity of the surface, revealing a significantly reduced Lewis and Brønsted acidity.

Abstract:
In this study, C. S. Lewis's books, essays, stories, and poems, in addition to biographies and essays written about Lewis, were read in an attempt to understand the relationship between Lewis's spiritual quest and his total health. The spiritual quest is defined as the search for the ultimate truth and meaning of life. For Lewis, who was a Christian, the quest for the Spirit is a journey toward God-Jesus-the Holy Spirit. Health is defined as total experience; the interrelationship of the body, mind, and spirit with all there is, has been, and will be. Health is considered a changing perception, not a fixed state. The dimensions of Lewis's health—physical, psychological, social, and spiritual—are studied. Lewis's physical states, literary works, literary themes, friendships, ethics, marriage, and views on religion are considered as each relates to his determination to know and to love God. For Lewis, anything without God is nothing. God is the creator of all living things and all matter. He is the inventor of all loves and is Love. In Lewis's opinion, one's health is in direct proportion to one's love for God. When man loves God he is healthy, the more he loves Him the healthier, the less he loves Him the less healthy.

Abstract:
C. S. Lewis (1898 - 1963) wrote both fiction and non-fiction, both essays and books throughout his life. The purpose of this study is to examine the fiction he wrote for adults in light of his expository statements about love found in his "Equality," "The Weight of Glory," Mere Christianity, and, especially, The Four Loves to see if his fiction consistently presents the same ideas about love. The body of the paper examines Till We Have Faces, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength to see if his ideas about love are included in them and to see if his ideas about love changed or developed over the years of his writing. After examining Lewis's works (excluding the Narnian Chronicles), from his earliest writings in 1936 to his latest writings in 1963, this paper concludes that Lewis's ideas about love are clearly manifested in all of his fiction, that these ideas did not change or develop over the years, and that the various kinds of love and their perversions that he treats in The Four Loves are found in the themes of his novels and consistently personified in his characters. In fact, love is the core of Lewis's writings, especially his fiction. Love is the "peg" upon which he hung all of his plots and themes and characterizations. Understanding Lewis's systematic "doctrine" of love will help any reader understand his fiction.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, photoredox catalysis emerged as a privileged tool for small molecules activation via single-electron transfer mechanisms. Despite their ubiquity as reagents in organic synthesis, the use of boronic acid derivatives to generate carbon-centred radicals remains elusive. This dissertation explores the utilisation of photoredox catalysis to generate carbon radicals from boronic acid derivatives and subsequently engage them in C–C cross-coupling reactions. In the first chapter, an introduction to photoredox catalysis and organoboron reagents is provided, as well as a discussion on the key mechanistic aspects of photoredox catalysed C–C cross-coupling reactions. The second chapter presents our initial coupling strategy and how it evolved in understanding that pinacol boronic ester species can be used as a source of carbon radicals via single-electron oxidation from a photoredox catalyst. Coordination of the boronic esters with Lewis basic species was identified as a fundamental activating interaction. The synthetic utility of this discovery was highlighted by performing a wide range of photoredox catalysed arylations of pinacol boronic esters. The third chapter builds on our mechanistic understanding to identify a set of Lewis base catalysts that conveniently activates boronic esters and acids towards single-electron oxidation. The usefulness of this improved set of conditions was demonstrated by alkylating a wide range of boronic acid derivatives. The fourth chapter describes the application of this methodology in synthesising four active pharmaceutical ingredients from the GABA family. An emphasis was made on developing an efficient flow process and “transition metal free” conditions to survey the attractiveness of the method for the pharmaceutical industry. Finally, the fifth chapter describes the experimental procedures relevant to the results described in chapters 2 to 4.

Abstract:
The use of Brönsted superacids (TfOH and Tf2NH) or Lewis superacids (M(n)(OTf)n and M(n)(NTf2)n) in organic synthesis presents a high interest in a wide number of reactions, particularly for the C-O, C-N and C-C bond formation involving the electrophilic activation of a double bond. These superacids could be used in sub-stoichiometric amounts whiole remaining more active and selective than more conventional Lewis acids, therefore improving the Green Chemistry aspects of our studies. We have used these catalysts to carry out Friedel-Crafts type reactions, tandem Friedel-Crafts-hydroalkoxylation processes and cycloisomerisations. The polyfunctionalised compounds for which a novel and efficient access is proposed present potential applications in medicinal, agricultural and perfume chemistry. A first chapter is devoted to the bibliographical studies of the various topics presented in this manuscript. In a second chapter, the Friedel-Crafts type allylation reaction from aromatic cycles, phenolic or not, have been studied and oriented towards the synthesis of valuable chemicals of industrial relevance. In a third chapter, mechanistic studies based on kinetic measurements and theoretical calculations on this reaction are presented. In a fourth chapter, cyclisation reactions of polyinsaturated compounds such as 1,6-dienes and aza-dines are presented. The cycloisomerisation of substituted 1,6-dienes allowed the access to several new compounds of interest in fragrance chemistry, a central interest of our laboratory. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis is internationally considered as one of the classics of children’s literature. The series consists of seven books, of which only the first four were translated into Afrikaans, namely Die Towenaar se Neef (The Magician’s Nephew), Die Leeu, die Heks en die Hangkas (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), Die Perd en sy Seun (The Horse and his Boy) and Prins Kaspian (Prince Caspian). According to the publisher, Human & Rousseau, they have no intention to translate the remainder of the series. The three books that have not been translated into Afrikaans are The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair and The Last Battle. The main aim of this study is the practical translation of a selection of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The Functionalist approach of Vermeer and Nord, Toury and Chesterman’s translation norms from Descriptive Translation Studies, Venuti’s foreignisation and domestication and Klingberg’s cultural contex adaptation form the theoretical framework for both the discussion and analysis of the source text as well as the translation. The four types of translation problems as identified by Nord are used as the framework for the annotations of the translation. By doing a theoretically based translation, the connection between theory and practice is illustrated: the translator chooses a general approach and translation strategies and is consequently guided to make consistent translation choices on macro as well as micro levels.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: C.S. Die drie onvertaalde boeke in die reeks is The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair en The Last Battle.

Most of the literary texts classified as juvenile literature by the publishers are similar to each other when it comes to structure. These narratives usually present myths, organized constructions that depict human cyclic trajectories, which show characters as role models. Considering, therefore, the need to identify these dialogues among mythical works, this paper analyzes the short stories “The magician’s nephew”, “The lion, the witch and the wardrobe” and “The last battle”, which compose The chronicles of Narnia, by C. S. Lewis and his biblical intertext as alternative for teenagers nowadays. Therefore, this research has three steps: the first one theorizes about intertext, based on studies of Julia Kristeva, Gérard Genette and Antoine Compagnon, and Bible as literature, from the point of view of Northrop Frye and Robert Alter; the second step, based on researches by Pierre Bourdieu, Roger Chartier and other experts in this area, ponders about the market of literary productions and brings an overview of The chronicles of Narnia, by Clive Staples Lewis, and the Bible; the third moment refers to the analysis of the intertext, considering that both have mythic structures, and to the validity of the works in question as role model for today's readers.

Abstract:
Since the publication of the book The Screwtape Letters in 1942, ‘C. S. Lewis’ has been a widely recognized name in both Britain and the United States. The significance of the writings of this scholar of medieval literature, Christian apologist and author of the children’s books The Chronicles of Narnia, while widely recognized, has not previously been investigated. Using a wide range of sources, including archival material, book reviews, monographs, articles and interviews, this dissertation examines the reception of Lewis in Britain and America, comparatively, from within his lifetime until the recent past. To do so, the methodology borrows from the history of the book and history of reading fields, and writes the biography of Lewis’s Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia. By contextualizing the writing of these works in the 1940s and 1950s, the evolution of Lewis’s respective platforms in Britain and America and these works’ reception across the twentieth century, this project contributes to the growing body of work that interrogates the print culture of Christianity. Extensive secondary reading, moreover, permitted the investigation of cultural, intellectual, social and religious factors informing Lewis’s reception, the existence of Lewis devotees in America and the lives of Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia in particular. By paying close attention to the historical conditions of authorship, publication and reception, while highlighting similarities and contrasts between Britain and America, this dissertation provides a robust account of how and why Lewis became one of the most successful Christian authors of the twentieth century.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Two literary conversion narratives with much historical detail, are compared in this thesis: the Confessiones written by the renowned fourth century church-father, St. Augustine, and Surprised by Joy written by the twentieth century writer and scholar, C.S. Lewis. In order to understand St. Augustine's conversion to the Christian faith, Christian religion as a social phenomenon in the Ancient World is discussed. As background for the discussion and comparison of the two conversion narratives, a brief biography is given of St. Augustine and of Lewis, as well as a description of each one's course of conversion. The research is structured In terms of beacons that St. Augustine identified during the course of his conversion: people who played a significant role, events that influenced his life, and inner conflict that spurred him on his way. By means of an analysis regarding theme and content, it is shown that there are clear similarities between the beacons identified by Augustine and Lewis in their conversion narratives.

This paper presents a study on C. S. Lewis’ Space Trilogy — that embraces Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. We analize the theological concepts used by the author, specially the Original Sin doctrine and its relations with the concept of moral imagination, developed by the american thinker Russell Kirk.

This dissertation describes the development of cooperative catalyst systems for the regio- and enantio-selective α- and β-amino C-H functionalization of N-alkylamines, inspired by the concepts of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs). Prior to this dissertation research, the development of effective and broadly applicable catalytic protocol to transform amino C-H bonds with high enantioselectivity remained as a formidable problem. In Chapter 1, the recent advances in the field of amino C-H functionalization through hydride transfer process that served as intellectual foundations for this dissertation research is presented. As highlighted in the first chapter, key challenges of amino C-H functionalization are: (1) unreactive nature of α, β- and/or γ-amino C-H bonds, (2) requirement for the use of precious metal-based catalysts and external oxidants under acidic/basic and harsh conditions, (3) use of directing groups for regioselectivity, and (4) poor functional group tolerance. Inspired by the unique capability of FLPs to activate otherwise unreactive molecules while disfavoring undesirable acid-base complexation, we have developed a protocol for enantioselective α-amino C-H functionalization of N-alkylamines, where chiral and achiral Lewis acid catalysts work cooperatively (Chapter 2). The application of the cooperative catalyst system comprising of B(C6F5)3, a chiral Lewis acid, and a Brønsted base to the enantioselective β-amino C-H functionalization is described in Chapter 3

Most of the literary texts classified as juvenile literature by the publishers are similar to each other when it comes to structure. These narratives usually present myths, organized constructions that depict human cyclic trajectories, which show characters as role models. Considering, therefore, the need to identify these dialogues among mythical works, this paper analyzes the short stories The magician s nephew , The lion, the witch and the wardrobe and The last battle , which compose The chronicles of Narnia, by C. S. Lewis and his biblical intertext as alternative for teenagers nowadays. Therefore, this research has three steps: the first one theorizes about intertext, based on studies of Julia Kristeva, G?rard Genette and Antoine Compagnon, and Bible as literature, from the point of view of Northrop Frye and Robert Alter; the second step, based on researches by Pierre Bourdieu, Roger Chartier and other experts in this area, ponders about the market of literary productions and brings an overview of The chronicles of Narnia, by Clive Staples Lewis, and the Bible; the third moment refers to the analysis of the intertext, considering that both have mythic structures, and to the validity of the works in question as role model for today's readers.
Essas narrativas apresentam mitos, constru??es organizadas que retratam trajet?rias c?clicas humanas, as quais evidenciam modelos a serem seguidos.
