Divers, John. De Re Modality in the Late Twentieth Century. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786436.003.0010.

Abstract:
Quine’s (in)famous sceptical critique of de re modality is expounded in the pair of 1953 classic papers ‘Reference and Modality’ and ‘Three Grades of Modal Involvement’. Here, I position the salient, and non-sceptical, treatments of de re modality in the later part of the twentieth century—those due to Kripke, Lewis, and Fine—in relation to that prior sceptical critique. My theses are: (a) that that Kripke, Lewis, and Fine all undertake non-sceptical defences of de re modal predication that conform to the Smullyan language-independence strategy; and (b) none does so in a way that falsifies Quine’s prediction of the commitments involved. I emphasize the insights on which Quine’s scepticism was based and commend these as sound and enduring.

Abstract:
This chapter begins with an account of Stein sitting for Picasso in 1905–6, and a discussion of her word portraits, before tracing how her art of portrait-writing evolved. It examines The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933), Everybody’s Autobiography (1938), Paris France (1940), and Wars I Have Seen (1945). The role of collaboration is explored, as well as how memoir-writing and autobiography implicate others. The chapter explores the aftermath of Stein’s first autobiography, as depicted in her second memoir; her ideas on autobiography and detective stories; the strong influence of visual art and Cubism on her work as an autobiographer; and the dichotomy between the present and the role of memory in all her literary portraiture. Stein’s portrayals of Ford, James, and Lewis are also discussed, as well as her years in Occupied France during the Second World War.

Abstract:
Core Logic avoids the Lewis First Paradox, even though it contains ∨-Introduction, and a form of ∨-Elimination that permits core proof of Disjunctive Syllogism. The reason for this is that the method of cut-elimination will unearth the fact that the newly combined premises form an inconsistent set. A new formal-semantical relation of logical consequence, according to which B is not a consequence of A,¬A, is available as an alternative to the conventionally defined relation of logical consequence. Nevertheless we can make do with the conventional definition, and still show that (Classical) Core Logic is adequate unto it. Although Core Logic eschews unrestricted Cut, nevertheless (i) Core Logic is adequate for all intuitionistic mathematical deduction; (ii) Classical Core Logic is adequate for all classical mathematical deduction; and (iii) Core Logic is adequate for all the deduction involved in the empirical testing of scientific theories.

Abstract:
Familiar lines of argument were followed in the interwar years and into the second great conflict. There was concern about the eugenical effects of war, with some reassuring, biologically informed thinking by the geneticist J. B. S. Haldane. Julian Huxley was significant in the period, arguing that evolution is indeed a progressive process up to humankind; that biological arms races play a significant role in this process, thus showing that in some sense war has been a good thing; and that now, thanks particularly to technology, we are in a position to move beyond war. Against this we have continued bellicose thinking in Germany, although the extent to which Hitler was influenced by Darwin is often overestimated. Homegrown philosophies were more important. We do see the rise of influential peaceful interpretations of Darwinism, notably by the American Quaker evolutionist, Warder Clyde Allee. He wrote in opposition to Austrian ethologist Konrad Lorenz who was happy to report on the support his thinking gave to National Socialism. The Inklings, the Christian fantasy writers, especially C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, hated the thinking of Julian Huxley. They knew an alternative religion when they saw one.

Abstract:
Organoids are developed from stem cells and serve as three-dimensional model systems for different organs. They have great potential for research and medicine, but also raise philosophical, ethical and legal questions which have rarely been discussed in Germany so far. This thematic study by the interdisciplinary research group (IAG) Gene Technology Report at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities offers an overview of current scientific developments, their present and potential application, as well as epistemological, ethical and legal reflections. Hereby, the IAG wants to provide impetus for an interdisciplinary and society-wide debate on this general subject. With contributions by Cantas Alev, Aileen-Diane Bamford, Sina Bartfeld, Andreia S.
