Full textW. von Humboldt introduced a romantic approach to language, far from the interpretations which originated with the Greek philosophers. Language is considered worthy of serious philosophical study.Later, new relationships between language and reality would develop from contemporary thought about language. The hermeneutics tradition and, mainly, the linguistic turn provide a key to understanding the philosophers of the twentieth century. The text also considers a constructivist reading of Derrida but such a reading is ultimately weakened by Marion’s argumentation. In this context, the philosophies of Heidegger, Levinas and Wittgenstein are discussed, first in a study of the relationship between language and being, then in terms of more specific issues which help to throw light on the subject. In the course of the text, the question of the unsayable and of the limits of language is always present and guides the discourse.Analyses of major works of the three philosophers and their critics show a rejection of inherited metaphysical conceptions and the consequent views of language as well as new ways of looking at the role of language in contemporary philosophy. For every philosopher, despite their differences, language becomes central and its source is found in itself. These analyses lead to the assertion that there is no place for a proper unsayable in the thought of the three philosophers. On the contrary, the turn towards language has forged a path to a full sayability

Full textThe thought of Lévinas wants to make us sensitive to the profound uneasinesse of the european culture which has achieved its universalization. According to Lévinas, this malaise of the Europe is rooted in the contradiction between its two spiritual currents, between Hellenism and Hebraism, because it is the question of the violence committed by the process of history in spite of its rationality. This violence is, on one hand, justified by the greek rationality in the name of the historical necessities, but, in the other hand, denounced by the jewish sensibility in the name of God who commands the love of the neighbor. This contradiction between the good conscience ensured by the greek wisdom and the guilt aroused by the jewish love of the neighbor coincides with the contradiction which exists between the conscious and the unconscious. In this way, the thought of Lévinas meets the psychoanalysis. This work intends to follow, with – and against – the psychoanalysis, the lévinassian movement of the existence which aims to sublimate the uneasinesse of the culture through a metaphorical transformation

Full textAgainst the effort of Heidegger which consists in understanding “the subjectivity according to the being” by reintroduction of the time in being, the effort of Levinas consists in thinking the subjectivity of the subject in his irreducibility of being, which separates the time out of the essence of being. Levinas’s subject appears in the movements of separation and of recurrence qua principles of the subjectivity of the subject in which the subject experiences the transcendence in the concrete of “the other into the same” as defence of the subjectivity which breaks with the essence of being through his works. But these movements of the subject do not appear at one stroke but constitute step by step. These movements merge into the process of identification of the ego which appears step by step in different forms such like hypostasis, enjoyment and sensibility. These steps comprise two different deliverances which go from the deliverance “of itself into the ego” to the deliverance “of the ego into itself”. The first is hypostasis, way-out of the anonymous there is as separation, and the second is recurrence of the ego to itself, sobering up of the ego, wakening of dogmatic sleep in the shadow of the there is. This recurrence or a “search for lost time” qua second step of way-out of being signifies in Levinas the ethical conversion: from the conversion of the knowing ego to the ethical ego. This ethical ego does not consist in looking for the sense of being but in looking for the sense of life in the human relation which lies in calling into the question of “my right to being” before “have to be”

Full textThe research, following the evolution of the idea of intentional in the script of Levinas, wants to focus the problem at the base of his choice to go through the intention itself. To be more precise, our goal is to demonstrate that the comprehension of conscience as intentional and representative existence make Levinas look for an experience of irreducible transcendence to representation, an experience that seems to be as an interruption of the correlation between idea and ideatum. In fact, the author gets to the experience of the transcendence through an act, which is impossible to go back to again, because every coming back to self is an attempt of the conscience to constitute the concept of Other. This conviction carries the separation between ontology and ethic. This separation implies the impossibility for the ethic conscience to get to a sense that could be intentional, that it means an activity without knowledge.

Full textIf Emmanuel Levinas' philosophy has often been introduced as a philosophy of ethics, determined by famous notions such as the face, the other or the responsibility, this thesis aims at demonstrating that these notions can be understood thanks to the primacy of time, and to a metaphysics of temporality. The goal lies in explaining how Levinas' philosophy ushers a philosophy of time that we can qualify as « discontinuist », opposed to Bergson's philosophy of duration and Husserl's theory of time flow. Subjectivity is processed through a distinction with the atemporal existence or the « there is », the connection to the world and relations to the others can be appreciated thanks to the notion of temporalisation. However this temporal structuration of the subject and the otherness encourages us to make several distinctions between different types of temporality and to consider the essential dialectic between time and the other

The aim of this research is to investigate Emmanuel Levinas’s resistance toward mysticism. The Levinasian argument regarding mysticism acquires the character of a philosophical argumentation starting from the theme of subjectivity and reaching its apex within the context of the reflection about language and metaphysical desire. The originality of the discussion that arises from the Levinasian resistance toward mysticism is that it has contributed to the confluence between metaphysics and ethics. Lévinas´s rupture with the main categories of the metaphysics of mysticism led him to elaborate an ethics beyond the modes of philosophies influenced by it. Lévinas´s distancing himself from mysticism in his major philosophical works plays an essential role within his philosophical thought because, without this distance, it would be impossible for him to trace a radical separation between the “I”, the infinite and others. In Totalité et Infini, Autrement qu´être ou au-delà de l´essence, and De Dieu qui vient à l´idée ethics is separated from mysticism. For Lévinas, there is neither a return to, nor participation in, nor union with the One. There is, instead, revelation of the infinite in the manner of an ambiguous shine in the human face.

Full textThe ethic discussion in the last time has roused a great interest in many thinkers such as Ernest Thungendart, Jurgen Habbermas, Jacques Derrida, Rosmini, Bonhoefer, Guardini, Mancini. They try to put out this discussion at the present day, beside the new philisophic tendencies as: Language Philosophy, Knowledge Theory and Politic Philosophy. Among these thinkers, it has specifically in Emmanuel Levinás , a new proposal for ethic. The present paper intends to present this new proposal clearly, that in its own way break up with those others, at the same time that it goes to another point of reference to think about the real ethic, that comes from another one. According to Levinás, the reference point of ethic is not in a transcendentalism of I must , but it is in the relationship of face to face that happens when the other person is next to. This is the way how Lévinas excels the other types of ethic, because they are still in an ontologic horizon. At the same time, with this finality, it has as a main point in research, investigate the concept of Love in this new ethic scenery that Lévinas proposes. Check up about: the context, through Lévinas itinerary existential-philosophic, where it can be noted in a strong way the influence of Judaism in his intellectual formation; the dialogue with names that belong to philosophy and that influenced his thought directly. Finally, it is going to investigate what he brought of genuine in his Philosophy, the place of Love, as a member of his Ethic of Alterity, proposing a change in the philosophy view, that is, love for knowledge, to a Knowledge of Love

Full textIn Au-delà du verset, Levinas notices that reading and the Book have never really been thought by the philosophical tradition. “”The animal endowed with language” by Aristotle, has never been considered, in his ontology, as related to the book, nor questioned on the status of his religious relation to the book. ” This oversight might seem particularly surprising, since philosophers are also, and maybe above all, readers. However the real issue, lies far beyond this fact. To us what Levinas’s work reveals is that this oversight is symptomatic of a specific conception of the philosophical reality. It goes along with the fact ontology is seen as prima philosophae as well as a sort of hesitation toward alterity. If reading is a literary, pedagogical and psychological problematic, it is also an hermeneutic and ethical one which entails a new conception of philosophy. Our hypothesis is that, even if scarcely explicit in Levinas’s, the question of reading is the gist of his work. Indeed, the Book is a modality of our being and not only an entertainment or a Zum-Buch-sein. It is the place of our approach of alterity, of the destitution of ontology and of the promotion of ethics as prima philosophae. The confusion between the Book and the Face must be avoided. We must show indeed the Other is present and exposed in the book according to a specific modality we have to underline

Full textThis study is driven by the conviction that our understanding and criticism of the work of Lévinas could be advanced by a mutual interpretation of the themes of politics and language. In the first chapter a profile of Lévinas as reader of Husserl and Heidegger is sketched in order to understand the way in which Lévinas philosophises and to get to grips with the first problems he formulated where the critique of totality is the central theme. The philosophy of the first Heidegger is presented in order to be used as a heuristic key to our reading of Lévinas. The political thought that Lévinas developed in response to the problem of totalitarianism is reconstructed and compared with liberalism in chapter two. The third chapter analyses the latent politics in the metaphysics of Lévinas, first by exploring the manifestations of totality, and then, the alterity that escapes from totality. The linguistic aspect of this metaphysics is examined in the last chapter, which analyses progressively the relation between politics and language. The study results in a criticism centred around two problems: the impossibility of interpreting the significance of alterity and the danger inherent in a conception of justice as exceeding the limits of the State

Full textThe thesis shows the phenomenological meaning of Levinas's work through a critical confrontation with, especially, the phenomenology of Husserl. Against husserlian idealist egology Lévinas develop a phenomenology of otherness of the other, but also of the sensitive and of the body. Lévinas oppose to egology a heterology of language : in "Totality and Infinite" the origin of the meaning is the other; "Otherwise than being" develop a responsive heterology where intentional giving of meaning is reversed in the giving of oneself in the response of the responsibility. The responsive heterology and the idea of ethical subject repose on diachronie time, a reinterpretation of husserlian genetic temporality. In the relation to Heidegger, the phenomenology of the embodiment, of life and time is original, but the idea of otherwise than being is problematic. The influence of Rosenzweig is important, see especially the idea of the singularity of the I and of the other in the intersubjectiv relation

Abstract: The general purpose of this research is to analyze the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas in Education. Born of an attempt to answer some fundamental questions: what extent ethics Levinasian put into practice in education coincide with already placed proposals, which also target a Peace Education? It is, first, to outline the extent and the place of philosophy of Levinas in education, exploring the possibilities, appropriations and updates of Education for Peace. Therefore, the ideas were defended from three distinct chapters, but interconnected. As a starting point, traced back to the historical evolution of the thought of Emmanuel Levinas. We examined the nodal points of the phenomenological method Levinasian as the foundation of his theoretical work, highlighting the originality of his thought. Levinasianas the objections regarding the Western philosophical tradition and the relationship between Judaism and philosophy, present in his philosophical system were also addressed. The second stage consisted of phenomenological demonstration of Being for the war, the psychic constitution and the way of being as Self-preservation. Another aspect discussed was the inspiration in the Israel of God as output be taking the new subjectivity of Being that there is founded as its movement for Peace. Finally, carry on about the Levinasian society and hope in the state, politics and legal means in another way that Being and Education for Peace

This work investigated the possibility to education based on the principles of ethic alterity – opening a space in the educational experience that enables the proximity with the other and the respect to the different, before any preoccupation with the transmission of curricular subjects, all based on technical dimensions. In its theoretical referential, this study is based on the thoughts of the following authors: Levinas (1906-1995) specially, whose concepts of education have their roots on the integration with the other through an ethic of acceptance and respect towards alterity; Freire (1921-1997), whose thinking is marked by the search of a school with active and interacting students through dialog; Bahktin (1895-1975) for his preoccupation with the self and the others, in the search of an ethic that could favor the implementation of an education raised from the principles of consideration to the alterity. The guidelines were based on the verification of teachers of a private large-sized college, considering the following: 1. to be possible, and in what way, to educate under the perspective of consideration of the ethic alterity; 2. whether those professors noticed interactivities between students and their professors and if they comprehended that interactivity as a necessity to the self and the exacerbation of the same self, that one can observe in human relations; 3. if they considered that interactivity as a resource that enables the consideration to the otherness in the educational process. The research method used to achieve the objectives of this investigation was the qualitative approach, the most appropriate to the interaction perspective. The data collection of this investigation occurred among five professors, the subjects of this research, as regards to the educational relation between the self and the other through guideline questions based on the reflection about educational experiences of the hereby researcher together with the assumptions of the thinkers upon whom the theoretical roots of this paper are based. The analysis showed that all the interviewees comprehended the interaction as a resource that enables the consideration to the alterity on the educational process. They signalized that the role of the institution, either collaborative or not, should be considered with all respect to the diversity, as well as the ethical and moral roots, together with the acting of the self. This possibility was conditional upon the preparation of the professor, their provided experience on students‟ sensitization and their role as a model to their students. The data recorded and analyzed have brought new queries. They suggest new researches and the challenge to broad this subject of study, giving it a continuity, nevertheless looking forward to the possibility of professors and institutions to teaching under the ethic of consideration to the alterity.

Full textIn this work we have attempted to illustrate, on one hand, Nietzsche’s trajectory in navigating the theme of responsibility, leading to its widespread diffusion within the concept of eternal return, toward the critical theme of decision. This latter theme indicates a formidable venture in thought reaching beyond and through philosophy itself, even as much as the will to power’s very framework or radical line of inquiry, once a similarly constitutive role is adopted and incorporated, appertaining to suffering rather than to action. Such an enterprise sees the confrontation of several elements: an original and vulnerable new openness toward the world, met with astonishment and dismay of the gaze, the hospitality of the absolute Other, and a weakening and renunciation of Ego in favour of Alter. This astonishment and dismay form the principle basis of a new critique, usually defined as “genealogical” as it arises in the imperialistic extreme of logos to break its existence and meaning. On the other hand, using these themes as a foundation, we have examined the possible axis of convergence, primarily temporal, between Nietzsche’s notion of eternity and Levinas’s notion of immemorial past. From Levinas’s opus, we made particular examination of the cardinal theme of responsibility par e pour Autrui and how the environment in which passivity of exposure corresponds initially to a dynamis – an activity – or better yet, the energy of a verb, a “cutting speech,” embodying a profound revision and even an overturning of key principles round which an entire tradition revolves. Even here, one assists in a certain “deconstruction” which attacks all of our “old-world” values. At the time of God’s eternal rest, the question arises of whether a path will be cleared for us in the entropic curve of nihilism – a transitional period aimed at a deeper understanding of our present, no longer merely centred on the levelled, egological primacy of time, but serving above all as an opening to the future. Such a “movement” toward the approaching world would entail a revision of responsibility, radical in its extra-moral basis, thereby not requiring the complete abolition of law. Responsibility thus interpreted hurls Kantian formalism into an irreparable chasmic split: an ipso facto way outside of itself in absolute responsibility, placed beyond rudimentary demands of political-judicial ethics and religious-theological morality. Responsibility would no longer be a passage from present to present, but a passage within the present, acting as time’s very catalyst and provoking the thought of another beginning. There in a fragmented time, our awareness as entities, temporary yet in control of ourselves and of our responsibilities, is definitively put into play. So, first and foremost, is a possible confrontation between Nietzsche and Levinas. Both arrive at the same conclusion, albeit in different ways: if the ethos of responsibility can no longer be rooted in the norm of the dominant language, it must place itself fundamentally under the symbol of promise and of the future, causing an upheaval played out in the violent relationship between all of Western civilisation and its Other. That is to say, it must be deepened in a pathos of “affection” and the realisation of the human being through the “otherness” of the Other

Full textThis thesis discusses the phenomenological method of Emmanuel Levinas. Our hypothesis is that it is performed under the name of “Concretization of the idea of Infinity”, and that this method of Concretization can be defined as the Concretization (or as the restoration of the sense and of the mode of being) of Infinity placed in myself through the Concretization (or the restitution of the content of idea and of the mode of idea) of the Idea placed in myself. Our research examines an exegesis of Infinity entered in the “I think” of transcendental apperception according to the incarnation of the Idea placed in my primordial sphere called the Same, what we understand as the “Phenomenology of the idea of Infinity” in Levinas. The mode of idea (idein) and the content of idea (idea) of this Idea are the object of our work of Concretization. On the other hand, this Concretization is called phenomenological Deduction, which is the restitution of concrete situations from which we could attain the plentifully concrete signification of the Idea placed in myself, the two moments (idein/idea) grasped in their complete significance. These moments, which come into existence in the Idea in myself, correspond to the “indescribable” in Levinas in so far as they can be described in terms of “experience” at the cost of a certain “betrayal”. The Translation of the indescribable despite the inevitable betrayal and the Reduction of the latter are the task of our work of Concretization. The method of Levinas can thus be summarized as philosophical Translation and Reduction executed under the name of phenomenological Deduction (Concretization) and accompanied by the Reduction of Reduction executed under the name of Emphasis (Concretization in the original meaning)

Full textIn Emmanuel Levinas’s work, the concept of ethics appears through a critique of the ontology of Martin Heidegger and the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl. In the dimension of ethics the two categories of the Same (Même) and Other (Autre) play primordial roles. At the same time, we find in Levinas’s philosophical discourse an ontological tendency whenever he must consider the concepts of Same and Other, because they recourse to a certain appropriation of existence and the existent. Thus, in our research on Levinas’s thought, we have tried to clarify his ontology in all of its specificity. To bring this specificity to light, we start by describing the concepts of the world and the body. Then, based on these two notions, we describe the notion of subjectivity with other principal concepts such as “the there is” (“l’il y a”), sensitivity, language, time, and God. Their fundamental relationship is explained in a way such that they produce subjectivity. These considerations effectively build up to our principal interest, which is to focus directly upon the particular ontology of Levinas, with its constitutive parts of Same and Other. Drawing upon the philosophical outcomes of our interrogation of these notions, we describe the fundamental role of the ontology of the Other for the meaning of the ethics. The final sections of the text continue this theme by considering the concepts of the guilty conscious and the will

Full textThe following thesis has the purpose of articulating two subjects, the Language and the Alterity, through the philosophical thinking of Jean-Paul Sartre and Emmanuel Lévinas. Starting from Sartre\'s work we propose the analysis of the subjects in three different moments that extend from Being and Nothingness until the Critique of Dialectical Reason, also analyzing What Is Literature?. While we examine the author\'s exposure concerning the subjects - which are set as intersubjectivity and language - the interaction between both and the situation of language in his work stand out. Subsequently, we analyzed Lévinas\' work and the construction of his conceptions of Language and Alterity, which are in the core of his thinking, for Totality and Infinity and Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence. From this, a common theme environment is set in order to establish the dialogue between philosophers, from a perspective that permeates our dissertation: the comment Lévinas made about language and the relation between this comment and Sartre\'s thinking

This study consists of a survey of philosophical and educational emphasis based on the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas seeks to investigate some aspects of training and human education, particularly the possibility of thinking about training / education of human beings in their ethical and moral aspects. The draft prepared by alterity Levinas leads us to the perception of "being" in its externality completely different from "I" and "other." This philosophy proposes ethics as a starting point for the action of "being" in the world, placing themselves in a dimension diametrically opposed to ontological analysis of Heidegger and Husserl's phenomenology. The primary objective of this study is to address the proposal for a training / education in view of ethics and morality, insofar as these groups work together for the humanization of human beings, taking as its reference to Levinas's philosophical proposal. In addition to the discussion around the possibility of the teachability of virtue, questions the validity or not of philosophical thinking for the field training / education. In this direction the face of the "other" becomes a characteristic of the master. With this, it is needful think the category of training / education as a condition for improving the human being. Humanization while specific objective of the formative process / education seems to have ethics and morals a significant milestone of achievement. It seems impossible to think of the changes of society in a positive way, without the contribution of institutionalized knowledge, the school would also reflect the role of the ethics and morals? As a body such as school social suffering and facing the possible ethical problems that affect? In this sense we can speak of humanization of the human being from the training process / education.

Full textHere, we'll examine the usual feminine's perception from a new reading grid based on the outopia while maintaining its specific difference without contrasting it with masculine. We'll start with the Levinas' work where the feminine's face appears just beneath the surface of the Levinas' approach to the otherness and to the subjectivity. The way he defines the Other, no reduced to a synthesis with the Same, gives a view on the feminine's irruption as well as the emergence of a specific feminine's voice in the philosophical area. A voice heard by Irigaray and elaborated by a post-modern feminism inspired by Derrida's works. Our questioning will focus on the possibility to open the reflexive area about a theorization of the feminine which may be likened to an analogon to an u-topos of the elaboration of a theme and about an understanding of the sexual difference no limited to the hierarchical interplay between feminine and masculine. This questioning'll be based on the Levinas' conception of the feminine as this Other par excellence. So the subject is understoodas sensibility fragility vulnerability and weakness

This dissertations aims at showing a new aspect of ethics: the ethical responsibility as a primordial and essential structure of the human being. This is the ethical perspective proposed by Emmanuel Lévinas. Its fundamental aspects will thus be here presented as constituent elements of the human responsibility that charges the person as a task or an individual and inalienable mission, integrating the should be of the person. In order to have a better understanding and clearance on this new ethical perspective that embodies human responsibility on a structural level, one proposes firstly to locate the conjuncture (particular and historical) in which one can place the author s thoughts; secondly to put the basic matrices of the Judaic thought as possible influences in the Levinasian thinking; and lastly, to demonstrate the religious philosophical basis that found the author s ethical thought, according to himself

The present work is mainly aimed to present a study on the issue of otherness and the humanism in the work of Emmanuel Levinas. The guiding point of this research focuses on commitment to withdraw the philosopher's ontological ethics field and as a consequence to appoint a new sense of humanity. Levinas noted that his time stood before an ethics crisis devaluation of human life caused by solipsistic paradigms mainly on the political middle .Selfishness is appointed by him as the main cause of the ills of society in which each individual seeks his own benefits without thinking of the horrors that can cause other men. Levinas realizes that human relationships cannot be said through selfish and monologic discourses, in which the self is placed at the center of philosophical arguments. That is how humanism can stand on a significance that is revealed in the face of another man, not as total ethical phenomenon in a responsible face which enables the ethics to take the place of prima philosophia. Thus, new ethical perspective is showed, the one of responsibility for the needs of others. The man is the ultimate meaning of his writings, directed to a new way of conceiving ethics. The levinasian philosophy reaches the metaphysical or ethical field in the Face of the Other human being. Breaking with the order of the whole , i.c. , the ontology of war. Levinas shows new ways in which totalitarian philosophy in which himself proposes the other in an arbitrary shape, can be replaced by an ethical- philosophical discourse not described by the fundamentals of ontology. This proposal takes an argumentative way with the idea of the infinite Cartesian which enables a break with completeness. The philosophical proposal by Levinas seeks to build a knowledge that respects differences and welcome the otherness in which the Other remains as an another, as a foreigner, without reducing it to an object. The levinasian humanism is humanism of the other man.
O Humanismo levinasiano é o humanismo do outro homem.

Full textIn the light of the passage from intellectualism to ethics, the confrontation of Levinas' philosophy with that of Husserl's, results in an unexpected extension of the phenomenological scheme. The young Levinas first identifies the possibility of rehabilitating our relationship with the world through fundamental phenomenological concepts. But in pushing these concepts to their limit, Levinas finds himself confronted with Husserl's intellectualism, which imposes on him a linguistic and ethical deflection. This move engages Levinas in a new pre-reflective orientation, which permits him to rise above the aporia of Husserl's idealism and the phenomenological subordination to the telos of presence, resulting in the discovery of the fundamental meaning of life that no conscious act could reveal. Thus begins a new philosophical adventure that aims to differentiate itself from phenomenological intellectualism. Is this path not already present in Husserl's philosophy, however, albeit in a different way? Should not this new orientation be considered as a sign of a phenomenological obstacle to be overcome? The study of the Other, human or God, exposes the ambiguity of Husserl's project by which a thorough examination will allow us to decide whether by reversing the general tendency as proposed by Levinas, a conflict is created between the two perspectives of phenomenology and ethics, or rather if a continuation through the new concept of transcendence may complete the phenomenological horizon

Full textThe paternal Eros which is immanent of the proximity of the other is related to the principle of the production of infinity in time, the production which is expressed like infinitely other. It is the metaphysical need which makes possible the plural existence as an unity of the self made up in the separation. Ethically, it supposes the responsibility for the other. Thus, paternity going down in us is comparable with the metaphysical desire, which is intended only for the exteriority because the idea of the infinity appears as absolutely the other which is the expression of the identity as an alterity. Lastly, the paternal Eros, which is the key word of our thesis clarifying the relation of God presented to the man, and which thus evokes by the revelation the meaning of the identity of the self, is like the metaphysical desire which is carried out in the form of eternal return to God

Full textThe themes of hospitality and welcoming of the Other have been the object of numerous Levinassian studies. However, only a few have, to our knowledge, noticed the exilic structure of that hospitality. Yet, the work of Levinas involves two moments of exile: the exile of the Face with regards to the constituted world of consciousness, and the exile of consciousness in the face of the Other. But if the Face remains in exile, absolutely exterior to the world of consciousness, one might wonder how a hospitality might be possible. This objection overlooks the profound transformation of the intentional structures of consciousness brought about by the intrusion of the Face. The latter deeply affects consciousness and exiles it from its status as center of the universe thus promoting an approach of the Face. The same problem is then raised again: How can an exiled consciousness show hospitality? The condition of exile presents itself, in both cases, as the antithesis of hospitality. It is this aporia which our work has sought to resolve with the objective of showing how the condition of exile constitutes, in Levinas’ work, the central moment of a hospitality of the Other

Full textRather than a treatise on the question of the other and alterity, would it not be appropriate to read the Levinasian meditation as a treatise on sensibility? This is the main question that the thesis intends to clarify. The structure of this meditation allows one to discern the implementation of a veritable logic of sensibility. In the course of elucidating this logic, a return to the phenomenological origins of Levinas's thought and a reconstruction of Levinas's interpretation of Husserl's phenomenology constitute the very first steps in this direction. That being the case, separation, diachrony, and alterity, among others, are indications that mark out the phenomenalisation of phenomenological sensibility. It is in the development of these indications that we would like to read Levinas's thought. In Levinas's work, sensibility effectively sets up a discursive and speculative logic, a grammar and a syntax that allows one to read and say the text of the "wholly other". Sensibility is that which intertwines the sense of subjectivity, alterity, the Other, ethics, the il y a, the caress, and substitution. Sensibility is the medium for the specificity of Levinas's thought, when specificity is irruption, transcendence, diachrony, disorientation, "dephasing", exteriority, excess, exception, and asymmetry. That being the case, is Levinas's ethical thought of a "sentimental" order?

An approach about animal condition which can at the same time to react to the moral perfectionism and to escape from the objections against Singer and Regan is not an easy task. Nevertheless, ethics can be thought from alterity on – in which responsibility assumes the main role – and it can be showed as a good way. In this context, stand out the names of Kierkegaard and Lévinas, philosophers that thought alterity and responsibility in an innovating ways. PROPESQ

Full textThe present dissertation intends to confront Paul Ricoeur and Emmanuel Levinas philosophy, from an essential point of view: the relationship between the subject and the other, subjectivity and alterity. Question which relevance seems to be dramatic after the Two World Wars, particularly after the Shoah: which could be, subsequent to this historical experience, the meanings of words such as subject, man and ethics? Aware of the necessary and indispensable critics toward classic humanism, and willing to withdraw the subject of his central position in philosophy, since Descartes, both authors seem to rehabilitate the subject, and put again faith in him, without paying to the subject unrestricted reverence. The result is the idea of a subject that includes in itself alterity: self as another , says Ricoeur; the other in the same , says Levinas. But which is the place assigned to the other? Levinas insists in the absolute priority of the other, and proposes the deposition of the subject in behalf of the other: the subject substitutes himself to the other, it is hostage of the other, being absolutely passive in his relationship with him. Ricoeur, in his turn, defends the importance of both (oneself and other) and prefers to think in terms of reciprocity, and receptivity of the subject. These different perspectives concerning relationship between subject and other imply two conceptions of ethics: for Levinas, ethics of responsibility and election; for Ricoeur, ethics of promise, of good living together and mutuality. It implicates also two different attitudes in regard of a question not always considered as philosophical: transcendence or the Name of God. For both, God is a question which deserves attention, but Ricoeur excludes the Name of his philosophical speech, building a hermeutics of the self without the support of transcendence; while for Levinas, the problem of subjectivity goes along this the problem of transcendence. Therefore, a question is born: the presence or absence of the Name of God in their philosophy of subjectivity could have connections or correspondences with their respective religious traditions Ricoeur´s Protestantism and Levinas Judaism? Traditions never denied by both of them, although kept far from their philosophical reflections, each one in his own way

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The aim of this paper is to articulate the understanding of the metaphysical sense that Levinas gives to ethics, by recognizing what he inherited from the thinking of Heideggerian ontology, as well as his move towards Kantian ethics in the attempt to overcome what he calls the Heideggerian “mood”. We have surveyed the discussion about how the death of the other is the point at which we give back the ethical character to meaning, beyond the finitude of “my” death as the ontological moment of the existentiality of “dasein”, in the notion of the infinite in the face of the other. At the end of this reflection, we arrive at the consideration of the birth of ethics with the arrival of a “third”, in which justice breaks with the violence of the love from which it stems. Our objective was to recognize human meaning as founded on alterity as that which make human experience and contextualization possible.
