Abstract:

Abstract:
Over the past two centuries concepts of love, as well as the nature of intimate relations, have undergone modifications. Along with these modifications, the language of desire, the text type of the love letter and love-letter writing practice have changed as well. It is therefore surprising that certain elements of the correspondence between prospective brides and grooms of the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie seem today to be enjoying a comeback on the Internet. Some of the parameters, however, have changed. This essay will explore the similarities and differences of intimate literacy from a historical and pragmatic point of view. On the one hand it will discuss the text type in its pragmatic, textual, stylistic and medial aspects, and on the other hand it will focus on a number of distinct writing practices. The essay arises from a larger book project that investigates the interrelations among literary, social and technological change and persistence. In the context of this larger project, I have assembled a corpus of more than 7,500 love letters (letters, postcards, telegrams, e-mails and text messages) in the Zurich Love Letter Archive (ZLA). The empirical materials discussed here are drawn from this archive.

Abstract:
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences which is one of the faculty at Unimed in organizing the activities scheduled and archive mail incoming and outgoing mail is still using manual diary. This is less efficient because it will be difficult to find so many archives of letters that have been stored for a long time. Currently, technological advances in the world are growing rapidly and are very much needed. Especially with the emergence of the Corona Virus Disease (Covid-19) Pandemic, most of the community's activities are disrupted so that activities are carried out online. Likewise with the student activities of FMIPA Unimed. Now students carry out lectures online. However, for final year students who want to apply for a thesis research letter or active students who want to apply for a scholarship need an active college letter, they must come to campus to take care of the files in order to get the required letter. Therefore, there is a need for a correspondence management application in the administration of FMIPA Unimed so that FMIPA Unimed students can take care of the required letters online, employees can speed up searching for mail data and print out their letter reports. This application is designed web-based using PHP and MySQL. This application has the ability to be accessed anywhere by admins, employees and students so that employees can manage mail with a user login, be it adding, updating, deleting, uploading, downloading and searching for letters and printing mail reports. In addition, it also makes it easier for students to take care of research letters and active lecture letters online until the letters are completed and can be downloaded. This application also provides a place to send messages to each other between employees and students.

Abstract:
Minore è l’interesse a partecipare a campi scuola. Abstract:
Arabic script is naturally cursive and unconstrained and, as a result, an automatic recognition of its handwriting is a challenging problem. The analysis of Arabic script is further complicated in comparison to Latin script due to obligatory dots/stokes that are placed above or below most letters. In this paper, we introduce a new approach that performs online Arabic word recognition on a continuous word-part level, while performing training on the letter level. In addition, we appropriately handle delayed strokes by first detecting them and then integrating them into the word-part body. Our current implementation is based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and correctly handles most of the Arabic script recognition difficulties. We have tested our implementation using various dictionaries and multiple writers and have achieved encouraging results for both writer-dependent and writer-independent recognition.

Abstract:
This research investigated into the lexical density and frequencies of five types of lexical chunks located in 300 online business letters. Top 10 websites on business correspondence had been identified in terms of traffic visitors and bounce rate under one million web rankings worldwide. Criterion Sampling method was identified prior to extracting the sample letters from the websites. The data was then run with Antconc Concordance Program (ACP) for lexical density and frequency analysis. Top 15 lexical chunks in online business letters (OBL) were compared against those top 15 in Business Letter Corpus (BLC). Findings revealed that there was a total of 39 916-word tokens and 939 counts of lexical chunks found in this corpus. It was found that more lexical words do not imply more lexical chunks used in based on types of business letters. All 5 types of lexical chunks were identified and ranked in descending order; Sentence Builders (SB) as the most frequent type, followed by Collocations (COL), Deictic locutions (DLs), Polywords (POLs) and Institutionalized Expressions (IUs) as the least frequent type of lexical chunk. Sub-divisional analysis indicated that Grammatical Collocations (GCs) were more common than Lexical Collocations (LCs). Majority of lexical chunks were formed more at sentence level than phrasal level. Comparative analysis between top 15 lexical chunks in OBL and BLC discovered that most top lexical chunks in online business letters are representative of those corporate business letters in BLC. Pedagogical implications in terms of the reliability of online business letters for academic reference and future research considerations are also addressed.

This study employed a novel user experience method, the love/breakup letter, to evaluate the usefulness of an online information literacy (IL) tutorial for students writing assignments with research requirements. Thematic coding of the letters showed that this method elicited revealing responses from students about their confidence in doing library research, preferred learning styles, and intentions to use such a tool again. In contrast with highly-favourable prelaunch user testing results, the majority of students wrote breakup letters to the tutorial and several bypassed it altogether despite their explicit assignment instructions. The findings have implications for librarians exploring new research methods and investigating practical applications of online IL teaching tools designed for self-directed learning.

Abstract:
The evaluation of the peculiarities of alphabets, particularly the frequency of letters is essential when designing keyboards, analysing texts, designing alphabet-based games, and doing some text mining. Thus, it is important to determine what might be useful for designers of text input tools, and of other technologies related to sets of letters. Knowledge of common features among different languages gives an opportunity to take advantage of the experience of other languages. Nowadays an increasing amount of texts is published on the Internet. In order to adequately compare the frequencies of letters in different languages used in the online space, Wikipedia texts have been selected as a source material for investigation. This paper presents the Method of the Adjacent Letter Frequency Differences in the frequency line, which helps to evaluate frequency breakpoints. This is a uniform evaluation criterion for 25 main languages using Latin script in order to highlight the similarities and differences among them. Research focuses on the letter frequency analysis in the area of rarely used native letters and frequently used foreign letters in a particular language. The frequency of the letters is one of the factors that determines the location of the keys for the language specific letters on the keyboard.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study highlights Warning Letter (WL) findings issued to sponsor-investigators (S-Is) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Methods: The online index of WLs issued from October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2012 was reviewed [1]. Through a manual screening process, letters were evaluated if specifically issued to ‘clinical investigators’, ‘sponsors’ or ‘sponsor-investigators’. A particular focus was given to S-Is at Academic Health Centres (AHCs). Each letter was scored for the presence of violations in 40 general regulatory categories. Results: A review of FDA WLs issued over a five-year period (FDA Fiscal Years 2008-2012) revealed that WLs to S-Is represent half of the WLs issued to all sponsors (16 of 32 letters). A review of these letters indicates that S-Is are not aware of, or simply do not meet, their regulatory responsibilities as either investigators or sponsors. In comparing total sponsor letters to those of S-Is, the most cited violation was the same: a lack of monitoring. A review of publicly available inspection data indicates that these 16 letters merely represent the tip of the iceberg. Conclusion: This review of the WL database reveals the potential for serious regulatory violations among S-Is at AHCs. Recent translational funding initiatives may serve to increase the number of S-Is, especially among Academic Health Centres (AHCs) [2]; thus, AHCs must become aware of this S-I role and work to support investigators who assume both roles in the course of their research.

Abstract:
This article applies Distelhorst and Fu’s (2019) typology of citizenship performances to an original sample of 200 online Mayor’s Mailbox letters to examine how scripts of citizenship differ between richer and poorer areas of China. Using a mixed-methods approach, I find that letters in more developed areas are significantly less likely to present the writer as a submissive subject, but no more likely to frame complaints in terms of rights and legality. I also find that many letter writers behave as “constructive citizens” by stressing their interest in helping the authorities improve local governance. These findings challenge linear understandings of the value shift that follows development, and suggest that the focus on contention in the literature on citizenship under authoritarianism overlooks other, more cooperative forms of political participation in consolidated autocracies.

Abstract:
Technology that is increasingly developing in the modern era gives rise to various innovations provided by students, society and scientists with the aim of facilitating human life. The innovations that are present are expected to help human life in carrying out their daily lives. But unfortunately, innovations that facilitate human work are currently not so massive, especially in the field of population data. Manual data processing has been causing problems due to human error. Humans make a lot of mistakes in various circumstances. Data related to population administration, which is the process of submitting letters concerning population data in several areas, especially in Mantingan Village, is still carried out manually. In addition, when data is entered into the mail archive, the time required becomes longer and sometimes even lost and damaged during natural disasters such as landslides, earthquakes and floods. Residential document files that are manual in nature can be damaged and take a long time to re-register. The given problem initiated the author to propose a technology-based residence letter system. In this web-based online letter-making application, it is useful in supporting the making of residence documents with the main functionality, namely processing population administration applications more efficiently. The making of this web-based online mail program is the result of a collaboration between the Balekambang Jepara Polytechnic and the Mantingan Village Government, Tahunan District, District. Abstract:
This study aims to explore the morpho-semantic features of Typed Laughter-Derived Expressions (TLDEs) used by sixty young Hijazi females aged (18-25) through instant messaging (IM) in online chatting on two social networking sites (SNSs) confined in this study to Twitter and WhatsApp. It focuses on the ways those Hijazi females express their online laughter in the absence of face-to-face interactions. Forty-five Twitter messages and one hundred and nine WhatsApp messages were screenshot by those Hijazi females and were submitted for morpho-semantic analysis. The results show that the following morpho-semantic processes are used: onomatopoeia, borrowing some English acronyms, hyperbole, parts of the body that are physically associated with laughter, haphazard letters, and repetition of a letter. Even though this study does not focus on emojis, emojis are found to be important in packing up those TLDEs to make the virtual situation similar to the real face-to-face one and to mark social interaction among online users as well.

Abstract:
News outlets serve democratic norms by providing a wide range of viewpoints, including opinions from the public. This study examined opinion expression in online reader posts and letters to the editor in a community facing social conflict. Analysis of opinion expression about the Jena Six showed more balance in both the range and tone of opinions from online reader comments than reader letters. Online posts more often challenged community institutions than did letters. Ability to post anonymous comments, the absence of media gatekeepers and a younger audience are potential reasons why online reader comments differed from reader letters.

Abstract:
This resource provides free access to the first 15 of 16 volumes and English translation supplements to much of the writings (letters, articles, and books) of Dr. Albert Einstein, and many of the letters written to Einstein in cases where permission could be obtained. This covers the years from his birth through May of 1927. Volume 16 (which covers June 1927 to May 1929) had been published in print in June of 2021, but that volume is not included in this online resource yet. Einstein was a prolific letter writer, and his archive of correspondence is substantial. Princeton University Press expects the whole collection to eventually encompass about 30 volumes, so this website covers roughly half of the material that they will eventually publish. This resource will help people understand Einstein's thought processes and see what kind of life he lead before coming to the United States.

In some gaming environment, a need may arise to capture letters written in the air by Leap Motion, which cannot be directly done right now. In this paper, we propose an approach to capture and recognize which letter has been drawn by the user with Leap Motion. This approach is based on Deep Belief Networks (DBN) with Resilient Backpropagation (Rprop) fine-tuning. To assess the performance of our proposed approach, we conduct experiments involving 30,000 samples of handwritten capital letters, 8,000 of which are to be recognized. Our experiments indicate that DBN with Rprop achieves an accuracy of 99.71%, which is better than DBN with Backpropagation or Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), either with Backpropagation or with Rprop. Our experiments also show that Rprop makes the process of fine-tuning significantly faster and results in a much more accurate recognition compared to ordinary Backpropagation. The time needed to recognize a letter is in the order of 5,000 microseconds, which is excellent even for online gaming experience.</p></div></div></div>

Abstract:
Virtual communication transcends national boundaries and allows establishing and maintaining contacts efficiently. However, it also poses threats to integrity and ethical online conduct. In particular, dating sites and unsolicited e-messages often prey on vulnerable unsuspecting people with an intention to extort financial means. The internet is a medium where anonymity, disguise and fraud are widespread. Scammers use linguopsychological devices to lure potential victims into the scam scenario. Devices were screened and categorized from seven letter-sets (each set containing 18–23 letters) including correspondence with scammers. The sets revealed similar lexical and macrostructural patterns common in e-romance scam. Frequently employed devices appeared to signal scammers’ malicious intents often potentially detrimental to a victim. Persuasion, flattering, appeal to trust, core human drives such as bonding, greed, altruism are among the most popular scammers’ devices. The method of structural reduction allowed establishing functional stages in the macrostructure of letter-sets.

"“I am writing this letter only for you to know”: Social Deixis in Romanian and Portuguese Letters from the Great War. This paper analyses the use of address forms in letters from World War I written by Romanian and Portuguese soldiers, with the objective of comparing the discursive configuration of the interlocutive distance (Carreira 1997) in the two languages. The analysis, based on online and printed corpus reveals systematic similarities between the two languages concerning nominal address forms: the frequent use of intensity markers (possessives, qualificative adjectives, vocatives, diminutives) to express affection towards the recipients. There are differences concerning the use of pronominal address forms. Parent-son relationships are asymmetrically constructed in both cultures, which is reflected by the use of intermediary pronouns você and dumneata, but in husband-wife correspondence only the pronoun tu is used in Portuguese, while in Romanian letters both tu and dumneata appear. In the correspondence between friends and colleagues there are some differences: the pronoun tu is used exclusively in Portuguese, while in Romanian there is an alternation between tu and dumneata. Overall, this study shows that interlocutive distance was higher in Romanian than in Portuguese at the beginning of the 20th century. Keywords: Portuguese Address Forms; Romanian Address Forms; Epistolary Writing; War Letters; World War I "

Abstract:
Wray (2002) distinguishes three main functions of formulaic language relating to processing, interaction and discourse marking. In this paper, we show that Wray’s analysis of the functions of formulaic language also applies to historical letter-writing in a corpus of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch letters. Discourse is marked with formulae indicating the text type or the text structure. Interaction is covered by intersubjective formulae communicating health, greetings, wishes for renewed contact, as well as Christian-ritual formulae. The processing function is operationalised in terms of literacy and writing experience, assuming that the use of prefabricated formulae reduces the writing effort. Therefore, we expect less-experienced letter-writers to use more formulae than more-experienced writers. We will show that less-experienced writers are indeed more likely to use epistolary formulae, and conclude that Wray’s “reduction of the speaker’s processing effort” in online speech production, also applies to written seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch.

Abstract:
This study explores the use of an AI proofreading tool in providing feedback on surface features of student writing. It examines the effect of ProofWriter online feedback compared to teacher feedback on students’ writing improvement, and investigates which aspect of students’ surface-level writing skills improves the most after using the proofreading tool for two-months. Participants were 20 fourth-semester secretarial students taking English Business Correspondence II course. The ‘online group’ students used ProofWriter online tool to get feedback on surface-level aspects of their writing, and the ‘non-online group’ students got feedback from the class teacher while practicing to write English business letters. A pre-test and post-test were administered to show the students’ performance in writing the business letters. The letters were graded using the ESL Composition Profile rubric, and then means of the pre-test and post-test were calculated and T test was applied. A questionnaire about using ProofWriter online tool was distributed to the online group students. The results showed the online group students significantly increased their surface-level writing skills in a slightly higher level than those of the non-online group. They also improved the most in grammar for the surface features of writing.

Abstract:
The pandemic situation brought significant changes regarding the teaching activities, led to the emergency transition to the online system and with it, multiple challenges, both for teachers and students. The students, the main beneficiaries of the online lectures and seminar activities, understood that they have a greater responsibility in learning than before they had and that if they are not fully involved in teaching activities, they will not be able to achieve the desired results. In this context, we considered it necessary to identify and analyze the students' perspective in relation to their experience related to the online school. Thus, a micro-research was carried out, the purpose of which is to analyze the students' opinions regarding the lectures, respectively the online seminars during the pandemic, related to the following aspects: the vertical and horizontal educational relations; the teaching strategies used during classes, the seminars; the students 'access to support materials, the emotional feelings and students' motivation, the difficulties encountered during the period in which the lectures and seminars took place online. The main research method was the questionnaire survey. The target group consisted of students from Valahia University of Târgoviște, Faculty of Political Sciences, Letters and Communication, from all years of study, undergraduate and master's degree programs. The results show that students are aware of both the limits of online teaching activities (stress, numerous tasks and homework, connection issues, etc.), but also their benefits (quick and easy access to information resources, development of digital skills, participation in teaching activities from the comfort of your own home, etc.).

To improve the single-run performance of online learning and reinforce its stability, we consider online learning with limited adaptive learning rate in this letter. The letter extends convergence proofs for NORMA to a range of step sizes, then employs support vector learning with stochastic meta-descent (SVMD) limited to that range for step size adaptation, so as to obtain an online kernel algorithm that combines theoretical convergence guarantees with good practical performance. Experiments on different data sets corroborate theoretical results well and show that our method is another promising way for online learning.

Abstract:
Arabic has three main vowels, which are the vowel /a/ (fathah), the vowel /i/ (kasrah), and the vowel /u/ (dˁammah). This study analyses the vowels of the Arabic Present Tense in jafʕal form which is related to the arrangement of letters. This study aims at helping Arabic language students who have difficulty determining the correct vowel of the three vowel fractions. In addition, this study can help linguists in general and Arabic linguists in particular to determine the vowel reading of the letter ʕayn (ع) on the active verb pattern of modern Arabic jafʕal which is divided into vowels /a/ (fathah), vowel /i/ (kasrah), and the vowel /u/ (dˁammah). This study applies a qualitative method. Al-Khali:l dictionary and al-MaɁaniy online dictionary were referred for data collection. Three syllable active verbs were analyzed as vowels for these three syllable active verbs in Arabic will change to three different vowels in the Present Tense of the verb. Based on the phonological method proposed by El-Wadi (2005), the analysis focused on the arrangement of the letters ʕayn (ع) in the Past Tense verb which is processed from the phonological method pioneered by Chomsky and Halle (1968). Clearly, the findings of the study have shown that there are effects on the vowel on the ʕayn (ع) active verb of the Arabic Present Tense caused by the arrangement of ʕayn (ع) on the active Arabic verb of the past. At the same time, this study provides an alternative that shows that the vowels at the position of the letter ʕayn (ع) of the active Arabic verb of the present time are non-random.

Abstract:
Objective: The study purpose was to critically review FDA-issued warning letters (WLs) and notice of violation (NOV) letters against drug companies’ from 2012-2019 for economic, clinical, and humanistic (ECHO) claims made in pharmaceutical promotional materials. Specific objectives were to assess the, (1) number of WLs and NOV issued; (2) frequency of WLs and NOV by therapeutic areas; (3) type of communication media cited in WLs or NOV; (4) intended audience for the claims in promotional materials for which the WLs and NOV were issued; and (5) number of WLs and NOV for ECHO claims. Methods: The quantitative content analysis approach was employed to review WLs and NOVs, obtained from the FDA website, from January 2012-December 2019. A data abstraction form was created based on the published literature on this topic and assessment of the content of WLs and NOVs for 2010. This form was pilot tested on letters issued in 2011. The researchers discussed any unclear question or information presented in the letters. The letters were reviewed three researchers. If there was disagreement between the reviewers, either a fourth reviewer arbitrated on the disagreement or the letter(s) were discussed by the researchers to determine a final classification. ICD-10 codes were used for therapeutic categories in the data collected form. Descriptive statistics, Kappa statistics for interrater reliability, and Cochrane-Armitage test were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 24.0 Results: A total of 102 letters were analyzed. Of these, 19 (19%) were WLs and 83 (81%) were NOVs. Majority of these letters were issued to manufacturers of therapeutic agents for diseases of the nervous system (n=15; 14.7%) and neoplasms (n=15; 14.7%). The most commonly cited media for violation was online website (n=29; 27.1%). Out of the 153 violations in 102 letters, 92 (60.1%) were clinical; 13 (8.5%) humanistic; 2 (1.3%) were economic; and 46 (30%) were categorized as ‘Others’. Conclusion: The study found misleading claims of the clinical effectiveness and risk information included in the promotional materials targeted to consumers as well as healthcare providers. Promoting reliable, evidence-based information is important for the health of the public as inadequate information could lead to irrational decision making both on consumer as well as on prescriber side.

Abstract:
Recently, an academic colleague showed me a letter of complaint from an undergraduate student who demanded to know why faculty continued to set expensive textbooks for students to purchase when the material needed ?is all available for free on the internet?. At one level, the student has a point. The internet is a rich and growing source of text, images, videos, interactive freeware and more of great value to teaching and research. For example, many government reports and statistical databases are available online rather than in print and online historical documents are now accessible to anyone rather than just those few with the opportunity to access physical archives (e.g., my personal favourites http:// showcase.netins.net/web/creative/lincoln.html and http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/). Furthermore, increasing numbers of peer-reviewed research papers are available via open access, whereby authors, their institutions, or their granting bodies pay or provide a repository through which papers are available online for free to readers. Some granting bodies insist on open access for all published work arising from their support and some professional societies have gone to great lengths to place journal back issues online, in some cases back to the 19th century (e.g., the Searchable Ornithological Research Archive, http://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/). Despite these advances, there can be worms in this apple of knowledge.

Abstract:
Social media posts made by ordinary people are in most cases only viewed by a small number of friends and contacts. But some posts get thousands of likes, comments, and shares, a phenomenon often dubbed as going viral. This paper provides a content analysis of viral Facebook posts published by common people in Norway, and of the news coverage they received. The social media posts that go viral in Norway deal with a variety of topics, like health care, elderly care, bullying, traffic safety, unemployment, animal welfare, school, and education. Some of the viral posts were open job applications, and some were creative expressions. Many of the posts address political issues, and becomes part of the public debate. The posts are personal in their mode of address, often with an emotional appeal for civic engagement. They resemble the letters to the editor, though they bypass the editor and go directly to online self-publication, and in this way, moving parts of the public debate from the newspapers to social media. Most of the viral posts got news coverage, which in most cases focused more on the popularity cues and the virality of the post, and less on the topic the post addressed.

Abstract:
The Zimbabwean crisis has been on-going since the year 2000. The various ecumenical bodies of the church in Zimbabwe have been voicing their concerns to the state through meetings and pastoral letters. While the church has been touted as a critical player in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, concerns about the church have been raised. One of these has been the issue of a divided organization that has failed to speak with one voice. With the coming into power of the so called ‘Second Republic’, hopes were raised that the state would be willing to have the crisis resolved. However, the crisis has just worsened, and the church has again been forced to break its silence. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the pastoral letter that was issued by the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference on 14 August 2020, titled ‘The March is not Ended’, which sought to respond to the crisis in Zimbabwe. The paper seeks to establish what religious groups can achieve in the event that they set aside their differences for the common good in conflict situations. Data for the paper were gathered through the issued pastoral letter, as well as the responses to it on online media.

Abstract:
This study describes the implementation of language learning in children aged 4-5 years in TK ABA JOGOKARYAN while studying at home. The assessed research was to describe the implementation of letter recognition in children aged 4-5 years at TK ABA Jogokaryan. This research is a qualitative approach and descriptive research type. The subjects of this study were the principal, class A teachers, parents of class A students, and grade A children. The object of this study was the implementation of letter recognition in children aged 4-5 years at TK ABA JOGOKARYAN in class A2 while studying at home. The data collection techniques used were interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique uses the theory of Miles and Huberman, namely data collection, data condensation, data presentation, and concluding. The validity of the research data was re-tested using source triangulation and method triangulation. The results of this study indicate: 1) Planning begins with making daily lesson plans, then sent to parents via Whatsapp group or give to parents directly when they come to school. 2) The implementation of letter recognition is played by parents by accompanying and documenting the learning activity process. 3) Evaluation is carried out through documentation reported by parents on the Whatsapp group. 4) Supporting factors include guidance from parents in letter recognition while children are studying at home, online media, which is used as a communication tool for teachers and parents, and special programs on television that help children's learning while at home. At the same time, the inhibiting factors are some families who do not make it a habit knowing letters, parents' busyness, mood swings, and a lack of enthusiasm for learning.

Based on the analysis of the current state of knowledge of this problem in Kazakhstan and abroad, the authors note the lack of scientific information on the prevalence and nature of dysgraphic errors in Kazakh-speaking children, the lack of knowledge of the specifics of the manifestation of written errors in children in the Kazakh language, associated with the peculiarities of its writing. The analysis of written errors in students of the second–fifth grades of general educational schools allowed us to identify specific written errors in 14.4% of Kazakh-speaking children, the most common of which were:omissions, permutations and insertions of your letters and syllables. As a result, the authors conclude that it is necessary to theoretically substantiate and develop new directions of special pedagogical activity based on taking into account the harmonic nature of the written speech of the Kazakh language and the peculiarities of writing the letters of the Kazakh alphabet. It is convincingly proved that the synharmonic character of the written speech of the Kazakh language is fundamentally different from the phonemic character of the Russian language and on this basis it is argued that it is impossible to transfer special techniques and methods to eliminate dysgraphic errors, used in speech therapy work with Russian-speaking children.

Abstract:
We tested a novel extension to mailed invitations to a web-push survey, using a postcard invitation to deliver a scratch-off giftcode incentive similar to an instant-win lottery ticket. Scratch-off postcards were included as one of five conditions in randomized survey experiment varying two mailing types (letter and postcard) and three incentive types (prepaid cash, prepaid giftcodes, and conditional giftcodes). Invitations were sent to a sample of 17,808 addresses in Boston, Massachusetts, recruiting for a new online panel study of city residents. We report response rates and costs for each condition. Findings suggest that letters achieve higher response rates than postcards and are more cost effective overall. We also find that conditional incentives achieve higher response rates and are more cost effective, although conflating factors do not permit clear inferences. Notably, the novel scratch-off postcard condition achieved the lowest response rate and the highest costs per completed survey.

Abstract:
The letter of recommendation (LOR) plays a significant role in the application process for many professional positions, offering descriptive rather than quantitative information from a third party about an individual’s potential fit within the hiring organization. Such letters, however, increasingly appear online, emphasizing existing problems within the genre and creating others involving trust, reliability, and confidentiality. Typically, the response has been that such digitization of the LOR minimizes its significance or standardizes it. This article analyzes the digital LOR genre as an exemplar of epideictic rhetoric situated within a Perelmanian framework and demonstrates how the digital LOR operates rhetorically, enhancing the adherence between candidate, writer, audience, and institutional values and providing a means of evaluating candidate fit. The article also offers a rhetorical heuristic that captures how audiences can more fruitfully read the epideictic, digital LOR, thereby demonstrating how to optimize the digital platform’s benefits and still use the LOR to its best rhetorical advantage.

Abstract:
Abstract Despite the health and economic benefits associated with mail-out colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, participation in programs across the world is suboptimal. A letter from the recipient’s general practitioner (GP) endorsing program participation has been shown to have a consistent, but modest, effect on screening uptake; however, the mechanisms by which GP endorsement is effective have not been investigated. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the potential utility of GP endorsement letters or SMS in the context of facilitating bowel cancer screening in previous nonparticipants and to identify mechanisms underlying responses. A cross-section of nonparticipants in the Australian National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (N = 110) was randomly assigned to view a letter or SMS from a GP endorsing participation via an online survey. Ordinal responses reflecting effectiveness of, and influences on, GP endorsement were collected along with open questions regarding other potential endorsers. Percentages, means, and 95% confidence intervals were calculated and compared. Fifty-two percent of the sample agreed that GP endorsement would encourage their future participation. Responses did not differ between SMS and letter formats. Trust in the GP had significantly more influence on response to GP endorsement than the credibility or medical knowledge. Other health professionals and cancer survivors were commonly suggested as alternative sources of endorsement. Interventions to improve CRC screening participation could benefit from the routine implementation of GP endorsement from GPs, other trusted health professionals, or cancer survivors, particularly by encouraging people who forget or procrastinate over collecting a stool sample.

Abstract:
This study presents the analysis of a small corpus of online language taken from microblog site Instagram, examining the language characteristic focusing on the linguistic deviations. As a representation of CMC, Instagram allows its user to do a free communication with another users talking about personal experience or discussing anything that matches their interest without any limitation of characters. The data used in this research was in the form of words, phrases, clauses and fragments taken from Instagram Posts’ comments. The result shows that linguistic deviations found in Instagram are non-standard capital letters, over-used of punctuations, emoji, repeating characters, laughter, abbreviations, and grammatical deviation. Online language is believed to be creative and unique and those linguistic features indicate that online language on is a combination between written and spoken communication and it has opened avenues of online language that is not accessible with “correct English”.
