Abstract:

Abstract:
Over the past two centuries concepts of love, as well as the nature of intimate relations, have undergone modifications. Along with these modifications, the language of desire, the text type of the love letter and love-letter writing practice have changed as well. It is therefore surprising that certain elements of the correspondence between prospective brides and grooms of the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie seem today to be enjoying a comeback on the Internet. Some of the parameters, however, have changed. This essay will explore the similarities and differences of intimate literacy from a historical and pragmatic point of view. On the one hand it will discuss the text type in its pragmatic, textual, stylistic and medial aspects, and on the other hand it will focus on a number of distinct writing practices. The essay arises from a larger book project that investigates the interrelations among literary, social and technological change and persistence. In the context of this larger project, I have assembled a corpus of more than 7,500 love letters (letters, postcards, telegrams, e-mails and text messages) in the Zurich Love Letter Archive (ZLA). The empirical materials discussed here are drawn from this archive.

Abstract:
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences which is one of the faculty at Unimed in organizing the activities scheduled and archive mail incoming and outgoing mail is still using manual diary. This is less efficient because it will be difficult to find so many archives of letters that have been stored for a long time. Currently, technological advances in the world are growing rapidly and are very much needed. Especially with the emergence of the Corona Virus Disease (Covid-19) Pandemic, most of the community's activities are disrupted so that activities are carried out online. Likewise with the student activities of FMIPA Unimed. Now students carry out lectures online. However, for final year students who want to apply for a thesis research letter or active students who want to apply for a scholarship need an active college letter, they must come to campus to take care of the files in order to get the required letter. Therefore, there is a need for a correspondence management application in the administration of FMIPA Unimed so that FMIPA Unimed students can take care of the required letters online, employees can speed up searching for mail data and print out their letter reports. This application is designed web-based using PHP and MySQL. This application has the ability to be accessed anywhere by admins, employees and students so that employees can manage mail with a user login, be it adding, updating, deleting, uploading, downloading and searching for letters and printing mail reports. In addition, it also makes it easier for students to take care of research letters and active lecture letters online until the letters are completed and can be downloaded. This application also provides a place to send messages to each other between employees and students.

Abstract:
Minore è l’interesse a partecipare a campi scuola. Abstract:
Arabic script is naturally cursive and unconstrained and, as a result, an automatic recognition of its handwriting is a challenging problem. The analysis of Arabic script is further complicated in comparison to Latin script due to obligatory dots/stokes that are placed above or below most letters. In this paper, we introduce a new approach that performs online Arabic word recognition on a continuous word-part level, while performing training on the letter level. In addition, we appropriately handle delayed strokes by first detecting them and then integrating them into the word-part body. Our current implementation is based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and correctly handles most of the Arabic script recognition difficulties. We have tested our implementation using various dictionaries and multiple writers and have achieved encouraging results for both writer-dependent and writer-independent recognition.

Abstract:
This research investigated into the lexical density and frequencies of five types of lexical chunks located in 300 online business letters. Top 10 websites on business correspondence had been identified in terms of traffic visitors and bounce rate under one million web rankings worldwide. Criterion Sampling method was identified prior to extracting the sample letters from the websites. The data was then run with Antconc Concordance Program (ACP) for lexical density and frequency analysis. Top 15 lexical chunks in online business letters (OBL) were compared against those top 15 in Business Letter Corpus (BLC). Findings revealed that there was a total of 39 916-word tokens and 939 counts of lexical chunks found in this corpus. It was found that more lexical words do not imply more lexical chunks used in based on types of business letters. All 5 types of lexical chunks were identified and ranked in descending order; Sentence Builders (SB) as the most frequent type, followed by Collocations (COL), Deictic locutions (DLs), Polywords (POLs) and Institutionalized Expressions (IUs) as the least frequent type of lexical chunk. Sub-divisional analysis indicated that Grammatical Collocations (GCs) were more common than Lexical Collocations (LCs). Majority of lexical chunks were formed more at sentence level than phrasal level. Comparative analysis between top 15 lexical chunks in OBL and BLC discovered that most top lexical chunks in online business letters are representative of those corporate business letters in BLC. Pedagogical implications in terms of the reliability of online business letters for academic reference and future research considerations are also addressed.

Abstract:
This study employed a novel user experience method, the love/breakup letter, to evaluate the usefulness of an online information literacy (IL) tutorial for students writing assignments with research requirements. Thematic coding of the letters showed that this method elicited revealing responses from students about their confidence in doing library research, preferred learning styles, and intentions to use such a tool again. In contrast with highly-favourable prelaunch user testing results, the majority of students wrote breakup letters to the tutorial and several bypassed it altogether despite their explicit assignment instructions. The findings have implications for librarians exploring new research methods and investigating practical applications of online IL teaching tools designed for self-directed learning.

Abstract:
Among the abilities that human mind has, there is the one of perceiving prominent objects because of its shape, color, or any other characteristic that could call our attention according to the context. In this thesis, what is intended to be demonstrated is that what our mind is able to segregate can be verbalized by means of using the language. The linguistic devices analyzed in this research are prepositions of place (in, on, at, to and over) and the locative relations established between the connections that they provide are observed and described in order to demonstrate how human mind works in order to organize things, people and places in the space. The corpus of this research was elaborated with 12 letters taken from the section ‗Letters from‘ from the weekly online version of a British newspaper called ‗The Guardian‘. The letters were divided into sentences that contained prepositions in, on, at, to and over which depicted locative relations. After going through the analysis, the results demonstrated that the prepositions play a key role when establishing the prominence of an entity since they are in charge of positioning one entity (figure) as the focus of attention in relation to other entity (ground). Each preposition plays a different role depending on the context they are set and the meaning that the writer wants to depict.

Abstract:
The analysis of the transformations occurring in the world of reading and the comparison between traditional reading and online reading are the central themes of this research. If, in a certain historical and cultural season, reading hypertext has seemed to correspond to a more active role of the reader, to his release from the "constraints" presumably cumbersome linear texts, a growing body of empirical data found that the hypertextual formats, often results in disorientation and cognitive overload. The latest studies on the online reading comprehension confirm these early findings and reveal further complexities related to the typical features of the Web. By combining a thoughtful intent and a more operational way, this analysis focuses on the processes involved in the new form of online reading, coming finally to explore the effects of using a metacognitive technique (Think Aloud) to teach to move strategically on the Internet. In many respects, the results of this study have confirmed the validity of a program for online reading teaching once the young reader has passed the stage of '"learning to read" and has made entry into the the "reading to learn."

Abstract:

Abstract:
This collection departs from the observation that online forms of communication—the email, blog, text message, tweet—are actually haunted by old epistolary forms: the letter and the diary. By examining the omnipresence of writing across a variety of media, the collection adds the category of Epistolary Screens to genres of self-expression, both literary (letters, diaries, auto-biographies) and screenic (romance dramas, intercultural cinema, essay films, artists’ videos and online media). The category Epistolary encapsulates an increasingly paradoxical relation between writing and the self: first, it describes selves that are written in graphic detail via letters, diaries, blogs, texts, emails and tweets; second, it acknowledges that absence complicates communication, bringing people together in an entangled rather than ordered way. The collection concerns itself with the changing visual/textual texture of screen media and examines what is at stake for our understanding of self-expression when it takes Epistolary forms.

AbstractMost journals have a section called ‘Letters to the Editor’, the purpose of which is to obtain feedback from the readers of an article regarding whether they have a different interpretation of the results, wish to provide constructive comments or clarify any missing links in the piece [1, 2]. This is usually in the form of a short communication and written in response to original articles, case reports or reviews. The editors prefer this type of communication to be sent online initially as it is quicker and for the person who writes such a letter it is an additional publication when it is printed.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines how a particular social event, Malaysia’s 2021 budget is reported in The Star Online. It aims to analyse the discourse surrounding the budget through use of corpus-assisted discourse studies (CADS). Using corpus linguistic techniques, a specialised corpus is firstly compiled of the phrase ‘Budget 2021’ in The Star Online from one month before and after Parliament passed the budget on 26 November 2020. A total of 889 articles ranging from a number of sections (e.g. Nation, Letters, and Business) were identified from the website that resulted in 339,651 words. Standard corpus methods were employed namely, the investigation of frequency lists, collocational patterns as well as examining the corpus in more detail via concordance. Findings from the Budget 2021 corpus show patterns of how language is used to describe, explain as well as oppose a political issue like the national budget, which may influence how governance achieves legitimacy in the eyes of the public. It also reveals how discursive meanings can be viewed in a more systematic way.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter studies equity in reading performance in PISA 2000–2018 in three Nordic countries: Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Using regression analyses, the study investigates how the reading performance trend for groups of students with different genders, home backgrounds and minorities has developed. The study is contextualised through an up-to-date description of reading comprehension instruction in the countries. In addition to trend analyses of general reading performance, the study examines if the differences between groups of students are consistent across different text formats in the digital version of the PISA test, distinguishing between static text types (e.g., articles, letters, stories) and dynamic text types (e.g., websites, forums and e-mails, etc.). We find a consistently high reading literacy performance in all Scandinavian countries compared with international development. There are large gender differences in the average reading performance in all three countries, disfavouring boys, especially low-performing boys from low SES home backgrounds. We find a huge and stable gap between minority and majority students’ reading achievement, even when corrected for SES. Taking these findings into account, we assert that there is no basis for concluding that the school systems give more equitable learning conditions for groups of students now than when the PISA assessments started. However, it appears that the new online text formats in PISA 2018 might shrink the differences between student groups. Based on our findings, we argue that it is highly doubtful if one can still speak of a Nordic model of education, both as an idea of equity and fairness and as a model that is united across the Nordic countries.

Abstract:
This study surveyed how students’ backgrounds prepare them for online education. The study compared learning outcome between traditional and non-traditional (adult) undergraduate students in online and face-to-face sessions; the difference in learning over time; and the effect of prior online experience. Student learning measurements included: pre-test, final examination (post-test), and final letter grade. Findings revealed that online education is as effective as F2F sessions and that learning has occurred. The study found a significant difference of learning outcomes over time. And that adult student with some prior online experience performed better than those with no prior experience. Conclusions suggest that Adult students benefit more from taking online classes compared to traditional age students, and that computer competency helped improve performance in online classes over time. Additional analysis is needed to determine if there is a difference between the personality of students and their performance in online and F2F classes.

Abstract:
The paper presents work on two databases of vernacular Old East Slavic writing, viz. the databases of birchbark letters and epigraphy. The task is to link the information of archaeological/historical and linguistic character, namely, the possibility of simultaneous expansion and updating of the database and of a linguistic corpus that enables grammatical and lexical search. The online database Old East Slavic birch bark letters and the section of the historical subcorpus of the Russian National corpus containing birch bark letters call for an integration. This includes, in particular, creating an online workstation for the morphological markup of texts linked to the database entries, the possibility of exporting XML-databases with morphological markup to include them in the RNC, the possibility of automatic generation of forward and backward word indices to the database on the basis of the marked corpus, mutual verification of previously compiled manually indices to the book by A. A. Zalizniak The Old Novgorod Dialect (a new updated edition of this book is being prepared) and markup of the corpus. Creation of a new database on the Old East Slavic epigraphy is designed to overcome the fragmented state of the publications and research in the field, combining the material accumulated by the scholars into a single electronic resource. From the point of view of programming, the architecture of the epigraphy database is analogous to the one of the birch bark database, which makes it possible to create an annotated corpus of the Old East Slavic epigraphy.

Abstract:
Several new reactors are currently under construction in the USA. Based on current construction schedules, Watts Bar 2 will be the first new reactor to go online for commercial generation since Watts Bar 1 was issued its operating license in 1996. New engineering programs will be going online with new reactors like Watts Bar 2. The startup of these new engineering programs is not without its own set of challenges. One of the programs has undergone a significant transformation since the last nuclear power plant started commercial operation in terms of industry implementation methods and regulatory requirements. In 1996, the NRC issued Generic Letter 96-05 to communicate issues related to periodic verification (PV) of motor-operated valves (MOVs) and to request action by operating commercial power reactors to establish an MOV PV program. Subsequently, the regulations were revised to include a requirement to have an MOV PV program in Title 10, “Energy,” of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) 50.55a(b)(3)(ii). Generic Letters 89-10 (on MOV surveillance and testing) and 96-05 have been closed and today stand as historical references. Their provisions do not directly apply to new reactors, but there are many lessons available from MOV PV programs at operating sites in terms of safety, implementation, and cost. There is only one consensus standard available to describe the requirements for an acceptable MOV PV program. This is contained in the ASME’s Operation and Maintenance of Nuclear Power Plants (OM Code) as Mandatory Appendix III. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) previously endorsed this approach as a Code Case and is preparing a proposed change to 10 CFR 50.55a to incorporate by reference the ASME OM Code edition that includes Appendix III. This paper conveys the technical complexities and financial concerns faced by plant staff in making the right technical decisions for new program implementation at a new reactor in the USA. Abstract:
The Open Software movement serves as a landmark and a starting point for many “open-something” initiatives, such as Open Educational Resources (OER) and Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC). However, under a pragmatic point-of-view, many of its basic principles are not considered specially when dealing with the above mentioned initiatives: common, industry-standard OER and MOOC lack a considerable set of really open features in a way that deviate the sense of the “O” letter – for Open – in its acronyms. Considering this, the present paper presents a systematization of these concepts around the general principle of openness. There will be discussed some strengths, challenges, and drawbacks in adopting openness as the key for OER and MOOC for Education in 21st Century.

Abstract:
Today's warp-speed world and new technologies have shaped our students and their learning behaviour. As such, they are motivated by relevant, up-to-date, interactive classes that contain collaboration and digital devices. In this context, the use of the communicative approach and the blend of offline and online activities are fundamental in creating and maintaining efficient teaching strategies and methods. Our study focuses on the integration of these two elements in an English Vocabulary and Grammar practical course given to first year students majoring in English at the Faculty of Letters. The first part of the study will focus on the presentation of the specificity of the course: targeted group, duration, content and requirements, the students' personal and professional profile and the teacher's role. The second part of the article will introduce some useful digital tools and offline and online practices that we used with our students, providing some concrete examples and samples produced by the students during classroom activities. The last part of the article will give an insight into our students' perception, feedback and input at the end of the course. Our study analyses the design of a practical course and the students' perspective on it with the aim of tailoring and adjusting the educational context to suit our students' needs and expectations and also to improve our students' language skills and academic performance. Moreover, we also aim at producing autonomous learners and develop transferable skills that our students can use not only in other courses and seminars, but also in their future profession as language and communication specialists.
