Although the european eighteenth century was long called the “age of Voltaire” (at least in textbooks), it was also an age of war. Courts and cities were undergoing a progressive pacification, as Norbert Elias has argued, but elsewhere the “civilizing process” was more bellicose. After World War II the development of special (auxiliary) historical disciplines in Lviv was determined by a number of features, including significant changes in the personal composion of their researchers. Some Polish and Ukrainian scientists, who have studied these disciplines, left the city. Instead, some Ukrainians, who had been living in the Ukrainian ethnic territories that have been transmitted to Poland after 1945, were repatriated to Lviv. This analysis deals with the historical figures of kings and emperors in Le Boccace Français, a compilation of short stories written by Donatien Alphonse François de Sade (1740-1814) in the Bastille Prison in 1787 and 1788. The author points out the flaws in the fabric of power by criticising the legislation and those who dictate or apply it (Justinian, Louis IX, and Francis I), by condemning the misbehaviour of certain rulers (Caesar, Charles VII, Charles V, Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI), or even by parodying the baptism ritual (Clovis). Not all utopias are truly imaginative, yet minor ones can be instructive or amusing. This article explores the hierarchy-obsessed French Antangil as well as some minor English ones so as to deduce further what so entranced so many about Nowhere’s possibilities.
