Although the european eighteenth century was long called the “age of Voltaire” (at least in textbooks), it was also an age of war. Courts and cities were undergoing a progressive pacification, as Norbert Elias has argued, but elsewhere the “civilizing process” was more bellicose. To finance the expansionist wars of Louis XIV, whose reign ended in 1715, and those of Louis XV, including the War of Austrian Succession (1740–48) and the Seven Years' War (1756–63), the French state expended two-thirds of its revenues on war (Meyer 57). Despite the Anglomania that marked progressive intellectual and literary circles in France around mid-century, between 1689 and 1815 France and England were officially at war for sixty-two years, not including minor conflicts. Against this backdrop, the image of Voltaire is that of an unflagging pacifist. Standing for all wars, the fictional war between the Abares and the Bulgares in which the naive hero of Voltaire's Candide finds himself caught up is described by the text's narrator, in a bitingly ironic oxymoron, as “a heroic slaughter” (114). War for Voltaire represented yet another instance of infamous unreason, odious intolerance, and despicable evil. It was the collective, generalized form of the l'infâme (“the despicable”), against which he publicly and tirelessly railed. The phrase écrasez l'infâme (“crush the despicable”), appended to his letters beginning in the early 1760s, signified the Enlightenment project of rooting out error, superstition, and intolerance by means of reasoned argument, common sense, and often a healthy dose of sharp irony. Quickly becoming a battle cry, penned in condensed, symbolic form as “ÉCRLINF,” the phrase had preserved all its caustic energy when, a century later, Friedrich Nietzsche inserted it throughout his Ecco Homo. Voltaire's attempts to stamp out this evil took local forms, such as the highly public letter-writing campaigns he mounted to spark indignation and obtain justice for the victims of intolerance, as in the causes célèbres involving the protestant Calas and Sirven families, the young chevalier de La Barre, and Lally-Tollendal.

The issue of royal ordinances in France is not a subject avoided by Polish authors, especially in legal history textbooks. However, the information included in these books is fragmentary in its character, and some pieces require verification. In this extensive legislative material one can distinguish specific ordinances (spéciales), which regulate single issues, as well as general ones (générales), which constitute acts pertaining to a wide spectrum of issues, or even detailed codes. The latter, i.e. the ordinances general in their character, can be further divided into two groups. The first of them encompasses the ordinances published between the 14th and the 17th century (I), while the second one includes the so-called Great Ordinances enacted during the reign of Louis XIV and Louis XV (II). The purpose of the following publication is not to perform a detailed characteristic of the ordinances but, first and foremost, to show that although certain significant institutions were regulated by the ordinances from group I in a way which left a permanent mark on the French legal system, the Great Ordinances by Louis XIV and Louis XV, which represent a completely different character from all the previous general ordinances, constituted codes in the strict sense of the word. As a result of that codification work, performed in stages during the reign of two sovereigns, the ancien régime France did not lack generaland unified legal acts, created with an understanding of the creative role of law in modifying the reality, regulating select fields of law in a comprehensive way and binding in the entire territory of the country. The code of civil procedure, the code of criminal procedure, as well as the commercial code and the maritime code, were enacted at the time. Some areas of civil law were also regulated. The only thing which was not elaborated, or evenapproached in those days, was the penal code. Napoleonic codes should be therefore considered as the subsequent chapter of codification activities in France, carried out for the first time by Louis XIV. The popularity of this issue in the Enlightenment literature and the fact that it was a common phenomenon in other European countries is not a sufficient argument to justify applying this term only to those French acts which were enacted in the 19th century and afterwards.

The article studies the problem of interpretation of literary source in visual creative work of A.N. Benois. There are identified and analyzed new sources of his works — historical novels by A. Dumas, père. The question about the role of the novels by Alexandre Dumas devoted to the history of France of the 17th and 18th centuries in creative work of Alexandre Benois has never become the object of research. The re­levance of this article is determined by this fact. The scientific novelty of this article lies in revea­ling new literary sources of creative work of A. Benois — Dumas’s novels “Joseph Balsamo (Doctor’s Notes)” (1846—1848), “Louis XIV and his Century” (1844), “Louis XV and his Epoch” (1849) — and determining parallels between them and art practice of the artist: painting, graphics and art of book. The author analyses content of the ar­tist’s memories, his literary works, diaries, as well as diaries by E. Lanceray, and complements these information details by a comparative textological analysis of Benois’s memoirs and Dumas’s no­vels in Russian translations. This method allows to deepen the formal analysis of A. Benois’s works (primarily the two Versailles series) and partially reveal the mechanism of complex figurative synthesis in the artistic consciousness at the turn of the 19th—20th centuries, on the basis of which they were created, to expand the existing perceptions about the literary sources of the artist’s creative work. The author concludes that the no­vels by Dumas “Joseph Balsamo”, “Louis XIV and his Century” had an influence on the artist’s perception of the theme of court culture and Versailles in the historical, cultural and natural aspects. It was reflected in the appeal to the plot of “fish feeding” in the late 1890s, in the formation of the images of Versailles and King Louis XIV in old age. The article also finds that the novel “Joseph Balsamo” had an influence on Benois’s creation of Trianon’s everyday image in the past. At the same time, the artist turned to the interpretation of the image of Marquise de Pompadour as “sultana” under the influence of Dumas’s novel “Louis XV and his Epoch”. In addition, the three musketeers — characters of Dumas’s novel with the same name — are placed in the drawing of the title page of Benois’s “Versailles” album. It is important that it does not come about direct illustration of the novels, but about an artistic process of creating a figurative system of images and forming the artist’s stylistics.

The article reveals the peculiarities of the eastern policy of France in the second half of the 17th — second half of the 18th century. During the reign of Kings Louis XIV and Louis XV, the eastern policy of France underwent significant changes. At the beginning of this period, the main goal of the “eastern barrier” was to confront the Austrian Habsburgs. To this end, the government of Louis XVI used, first of all, the alliance with the Principality of Transylvania. Problems in the east distracted the Habsburgs from the wars in Europe. During the reign of Louis XV, France's foreign policy became much less consistent. At the beginning of the reign of this monarch, the policy of the “eastern barrier” continued, only now it was directed primarily against Russia, since France was very concerned about the Austro-Russian military alliance. Later, the so-called “reversal of alliances” took place, which eventually led to the Seven Years' War, during which France was on the same side with Austria and Russia, and the policy of the “eastern barrier” was temporarily forgotten. After the turn of Russian policy towards an alliance with Prussia, France is also returning to its traditional policy of containing Russia. This was reflected in the support of the Bar Confederation in Poland and pushing the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate to war with Russia. However, this policy has not led to any significant results. Apparently, the traditional alliance with the Ottoman Empire for France already at that moment did not seem so attractive to some French politicians. The weakening of the Ottoman Empire was presented to them as a possible reason for the seizure of its territories in the Eastern Mediterranean, Egypt for example.

В работе рассматриваются основные аспекты развития и трансформации колониальной артиллерии во Франции в период правления Людовика XIV и Людовика XV. Заморские владения традиционно инструментализировали ключевые военные и политические практики, опираясь на опыт своих метрополий, приспосабливая эти механизмы к местным реалиям. Французские колонии наглядно демонстрируют реализацию этого принципа на фоне нарастания противоречий, неоднократно превращавшихся в полномасштабные конфликты. Автор концентрирует внимание в первую очередь на проблеме организации и функционирования обозначенного механизма в контексте течения очередного витка «фортификационной и артиллерийской революции» в Европе, что проявляется и в попытках реализовать на периферии постулаты вобановской концепции Pre Carre и пр. Уделяется внимание и проблеме увеличения роли артиллерии в ведении локальных кампаний на фронтире англо-французских территорий. The paper treats some important aspects of the development and transformation of the French colonial artillery during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV. European countries are known for adapting their homeland military and political practices to the environment of their overseas colonies and territories. The French colonies clearly demonstrate the implementation of this principle against the background of the growing Anglo-French contradictions that repeatedly turned into full-scale conflicts. The author focuses on the implementation of the designated mechanism in the context of the field artillery revolution and the fortification revolution in Europe, in attempts to implement the principles of Vauban’s pre-carré territorial system. Attention is also paid to the issue of increasing the role of artillery in local campaigns on the Anglo-French frontier.

Dans la France moderne, l’éducation des enfants, garçons et filles, ne fait pas partie des champs traditionnels d’intervention de l’État monarchique. Ses ingérences sont rares et se limitent à des déclarations de principe, non suivi d’engagements administratifs et encore moins financiers. Ainsi en 1698 une déclaration de Louis XIV, reprise quasiment mots pour mots en 1724 par Louis XV, affirme la nécessité de fonder une école par paroisse et de rendre la scolarité obligatoire jusqu'à quatorze ans. La monarchie française d’Ancien Régime n’a donc jamais eu de véritable politique scolaire, même si elle a pu, occasionnellement, initier ou soutenir la création d’établissements, en particulier au XVIIIe siècle, des écoles spécialisées ‑Ponts et Chaussées en 1747 et Génie de Mézières l’année suivante, des écoles militaires à partir de 1751 ou des écoles vétérinaires à partir de 1762. Tous réservés aux garçons, ces espaces participent alors de la construction de la masculinité des jeunes générations.

Résumé Confrontée au développement du protestantisme, qui rejetait le principe d'une longue période d'abstinence, la monarchie avait pris, dès le XVIe siècle, des mesures contraignantes destinées à empêcher les catholiques de consommer de la viande en carême. A Paris, les marchés aux bestiaux et les boucheries étaient fermés durant six semaines. Tous les habitants qui ne voulaient faire maigre, en principe pour des raisons d'âge ou de santé, devaient se fournir à l'Hôtel-Dieu, à qui fut confié, de 1575 à 1775, le monopole du débit de la viande en carême. Dès le règne de Louis XIV, un observateur affirma que, d'année en année, le nombre des bestiaux abattus par l'Hôtel-Dieu augmentait plus vite que la population, et il en déduisit que l'observance reculait. Impossible à vérifier et sans doute fausse pour le XVIIe siècle, la démonstration est vraie pour le XVIIIe siècle. Les archives de l'Hôtel-Dieu prouvent que, au cours du règne de Louis XV, la consommation de viande progressa bien plus vite que celle de la population, en particulier à partir des années 1760. Le phénomène s'emballa sous le règne de Louis XVI, après que Turgot eut rétabli la liberté de vente. Au fil du siècle, les Parisiens furent donc de plus en plus nombreux à faire gras en carême et à violer l'un des principaux interdits de l'Église, ce que confirment les témoignages des contemporains.

The study follows the cultural route fertilized by the Seine, after exiting Paris towards the west. It is about the impressive hydrographic adduction of the river with the help of the „Marly machine“, in order to animate the water games and the fireworks in the gardens of Versailles / Trianon palace during the reign of Louis XIV. In this space, a culture of the outdoors spectacle was developed, through royal entertainment and gallant games, but also via private theatrical performances held in various venues, of which the most imposing is the one finalized by Louis XV: the Royal Opera added to the north wing of the palace. The names of the great classics of the theatre can be linked to these spectacle events, such as Corneille, Racine, Molière, and also the musician Lully, the choreographer Beauchamp, or the intendant Viga- rani, not to mention the architectural spectacle resulting from the collaboration of the Sun King with his famous court artists: architects (Le Vau, Le Nôtre, Mansart, etc.) and painters (Le Brun, Poussin, etc.).

Le jésuite français Étienne de Carheil est surtout connu pour ses missions auprès des peuples autochtones du Canada. Mais l’ouvrage ici étudié est antérieur à son départ en mission : il s’agit d’un poème latin (Metamorphosis) célébrant la naissance du fils aîné de Louis xiv, le 1er novembre 1661, et composé alors que de Carheil, âgé de vingt-huit ans, était professeur de rhétorique au collège jésuite de Tours. Le poème reçut l’aval de ses supérieurs et fut jugé digne d’être imprimé à Paris ; de Carheil s’en souvient encore dans une lettre envoyée douze ans plus tard à son père, depuis la mission de Saint-Joseph à Goyogouën. À travers l’analyse de ce long poème allégorique (260 hexamètres consacrés à la métamorphose du lys français, rougi par les guerres mais retrouvant sa blancheur à travers la naissance princière), transparaît le bagage littéraire et culturel du jeune de Carheil quelques années avant son départ pour le Canada.

As John Adamson outlined in his voluminous comparative analysis of European court culture, „in the period between 1500 and 1750 a „Versailles model” of a court as a self-sufficient, situated in a free space, architectonically harmonious city-residency remote from the capital city, where the king’s household and administration was located, was an exception.” The Versailles conception and „model” both architectonically and in terms of practical functioning of the court was spread and secured in the 18th century, developing into a model of absolutism which was imitated to different extents. The spectrum of the adoption of the court of Louis XIV by material and intellectual culture reached from the grand ensembles of palaces of Carskoye Selo in Peterhof, Russia, Drottningholm in Sweden and Sanssouci in Germany to several small residences of the German princes’ realms in Weimar, Hanover, and elsewhere in Europe. Analyzing the works of several researchers about the transformation of the French aristocracy into court society, a common conclusion is the assurance of the symbolic autocratic power by Louis XIV to the detriment of the economic and political independence of the aristocracy. In this context, A. de Tocqueville points at the forfeiture of the power of the French aristocracy and its influence and a simultaneous self-isolation of the group, which he defines as a „caste with ideas, habits and barriers that they created in the nation.” Modern research, when revisiting the methods of the resarch on the aristocracy and when expanding the choice of sources, is still occupied with the problem defined in the beginning of the 19th century by A. de Tocqueville: The aristocracy lost its power and influence, and by the end of the 18th century also its economic basis for its dominance in French society. John Levron defines courtiers as functional mediators between the governor and society, calling them a „screen”.1 In turn, Ellery Schalk stated that in the time of Louis XIV the aristocracy was going through an elite identity crisis, when alongside the old aristocracy involved in military professions (noblesse d’épée), the governor allowed a new, so-called administrative aristocracy (noblesse de robe) to hold major positions and titles of honour. Along with the transformation of the traditional aristocratic hierarchy formed in the early Middle Ages, which John Lough described as an anachronism already back in the 17th century, also the status of governor and its symbolic place in the aristocratic hierarchy changed. It shall be noted that it is the question of a governor’s role in the political culture of absolutism by which the ideas of many researches can be distinguished. Norbert Elias thinks that an absolute monarch was a head of a family, which included the whole state and thereby turned into a governor’s „household”. Timothy Blanning, on the other hand, thinks that the court culture of Louis XIV was the expression of the governor’s insecurity and fears. This is a view which the researcher seems to derive from the traumatic experience of the Fronde (the aristocrats’ uprising against the mother of Louis XIV, regent Anna of Austria), which the culturologist K. Hofmane interpreted from a psychoanalytical point of view and defined Louis XIV as a conqueror of chaos and a despotic governor. In the wide spectrum of opinions, it is not the governor’s political principles which are postulated as a unifying element, but scenarios of the representation of power, their aims and various tools that are combined in the concept of court culture. N. Elias names symbolic activities in the court etiquette as the manifestation of power relations, whereas M. Yampolsky identifies a symbolic withdrawal of a governor’s body from the „circulation in society”, when a governor starts to represent himself, thereby alienating himself from society. George Gooch in this way reprimanded Louis XV as he thought this development would deprive the royal representation from the sacred. In turn, Jonathan Dewald in his famous work „European Aristocracy” noted that Louis XIV was not the first to use the phenomenon of the court for securing the personal authority of a governor, and refers to the courts during the late period of the Italian Renaissance as predecessors of French court culture. What role did the monarch’s closest „viewers” – the courtiers – play in this? K. Hofmane by means of comparison with the ancient Greek mythical monster Gorgon comes to conclusion that the court had to provide prey for the Gorgon (the king), who is both scared and fascinated by the terrific sight (of power and glory). The perception of the court as a collective observer implies the presence of the observed and worshiped object, the king. The public life of Louis XIV, which was subjected to the complicated etiquette, provided for the hierarchical access to the king’s public body. Let’s remember the „Memoirs” of Duc de Saint-Simon that gives a detailed description of the symbolic privileges granted to the courtiers, which along the material gifts (pensions, concessions and land plots) were tools for the formation of the identity and the status of a new aristocrat/courtier – along with the right to touch the king’s belongings, his attire, etc. The basis for securing the structure of the court’s hierarchy was provided by the governor’s body along the lines mentioned above, which according to the understanding of representation by M. Yampolsky was withdrawn from society and placed within the borders of the ensemble of the Versailles palace. There, by means of several tools, including dramatic works of art, the governor’s body was separated from its symbolic content and hidden behind the algorithms of ritualized activities. Blanning also speaks about a practice of hiding from the surrounding environment, thereby defining court culture as a hiding-place that a governor created around himself. It was possible to look at a governor and thereby be observed by him not only on particular festivals, when a governor was available mostly for court society, but also in different works of visual art, for example, on triumphal archs, in engravings, or during horse-racings.

This article focuses on building Joglo Majapahit in analyzing the traditional housing system in rural Java. Joglo Majapahit contains the value of social harmony that is reflected in the traditional housing model gemah ripah loh jinawi tata tentrem kerta raharja in the Java community. The data were collected using literature studies using Louis Gottchalk's history writing techniques and field studies using the verstehen theory from Wilhelm Dilthey as the analytical blade in highlighting the problem. The purpose of this research is to analyze the creation of Joglo Majapahit as the local genius of agrarian society that is agrarian in the stratification of social class in Majapahit XIV-XV century AD. The implications of this research are intended to enrich the learning of history in the study of the history of ancient culture in Indonesia which began to be forgotten by the young generation. The other side provides an alternative learning to not always focus on the grand narrative of national history of Indonesia which focuses on the historical side of nationalism but cultural topics need to be highlighted in this digital era.

Trois ans après sa première représentation à Versailles, Georges Dandin de Molière a fait l 'objet d'une traduction partielle en slovène réalisée par Franjo Krsto Frankopan. Cette traduction des trois premières scènes peut être objectivement considérée comme l'un des défis les plus ardus de l'histoire littéraire contemporaine. La recherche slovène et internationale l'a tantôt ignoré, tantôt considéré comme lettre morte. La raison en est que, dans ce fragment, Frankopan aurait utilisé le slovène comme langue servant à ridiculiser, comme l'ayaient fait les dramaturges italiens de la Renaissance avec les dialectes slaves. Or, rien n'est plus éloigné de la vérité. Le texte est intégralement écrit en slovène, langue de la mère de Frankopan. Du reste, comme le montre ne serait-ce que l'analyse bergsonienne du comique, Georges Dandin n'est pas un texte comique. Il convient, par contre, de voir le lien entre la traduction du fragment de la pièce de Molière et l'action de Frankopan contre la monarchie habsbourgeoise. Par l'intermédiaire de la diplomatie viennoise, ce dernier cherchait en effet des appuis à la cour du .roi Louis XIV dont l'auteur dramatique comique en titre était précisément Molière. En conclusion, il convient de souligner que le fragment traduit par Frankopan, en tant que premier texte dramatique en langue slovène, invite à remettre en question la datation des débuts du théâtre slovène proposée par les historiens de la littérature.

The article deals with the analysis of the origins and features of the formation of the “black legend” about Valentina Visconti, the wife of Duke Louis of Orleans and the sister-in-law of Charles VI. The author studies in detail all the sources of the turn of the 14th–15th centuries, which retold rumors that the Duchess was a witch who brought a spell on the French king, and disputes the point of view prevailing in historiography, according to which the creator of that “black legend” was one and the only person – the Hennegau chronicler Jean Froissart. According to the author of the article, rumors about Valentina Visconti arose much earlier than Froissart took up the compilation of his “Chronicles”, they were initially oral in nature and were primarily associated with the political propaganda of the Dukes of Burgundy, who were trying to gain full power in the French Kingdom

El texto aborda la evolución del análisis historiográfico que se ha llevado a cabo sobre la Cataluña moderna entre finales del siglo XVI y principios del XVIII. Aunque la frontera moderna de Cataluña puede ser múltiple, nos centramos esencialmente en aquella que va desde el Valle de Arán hasta el Mediterráneo. El texto abre con una primera reflexión sobre el camino hacia el cambio de modelo, luego evoca los efectos de las guerras con Francia, con algunos ejemplos concretos, como el de Cerdaña, y, por último, expone la realidad percibida y llevada a cabo con la nueva “fortificación” de la frontera catalana a finales del siglo XVII, cuando el control de Francia se hace evidente. Although the modern border of Catalonia may be multiple, the focus will essentially be upon the border that runs from the Arán Valley to the Mediterranean. The text opens with an initial reflection on the path towards a change of model, before evoking the effects of the wars with France, with some specific examples, such as that of Cerdanya, and finally presenting the reality perceived and manifested with the new “fortification” of the Catalan border at the end of the 17th century, when French control became evident. After World War II the development of special (auxiliary) historical disciplines in Lviv was determined by a number of features, including significant changes in the personal composion of their researchers. Some Polish and Ukrainian scientists, who have studied these disciplines, left the city. Instead, some Ukrainians, who had been living in the Ukrainian ethnic territories that have been transmitted to Poland after 1945, were repatriated to Lviv. Among these Ukrainians was a former teacher Ivan Zayats (1887–1968). He has graduated the Faculty of Philosophy of Lviv University (1913), where he had studied history and geography. During the interwar period (1920s – 1930s) he was a teacher in secondary schools in Peremyshl, participated in the cultural and educational life of the local Ukrainian community, was a co-organizer of The Ukrainian regional museum “Stryvigor”. Iv. Zayats has got a job at the Lviv State Republican Historical Museum in August 1946. At this museum he has worked as a researcher and chief custodian of its funds fifteen years. The museum was established by merging several Lviv museums and big local collections in May 1940. After that, this museum has become the owner of the largest collection of coins and medals in the city. Famous Polish museologist Rudolf Menkitskyj was the first who has carried out the work on their arrangement. The next who worked with coins and medals at the museum in 1944–1946 was Marjan Haisig, a former researcher at Lviv University. Iv. Zayats worked with numismatic collection of this museum at 1946–1961. He carried out an inventory, conservation and restoration of old and newly acquired materials, prepared indexes, selected some coins and medals for the museum exhibitions. He also started his scientific work in the field of numismatics at that time. In the 1950s the object of his scientific interests was the Lviv mint of the XIV–XV centuries. As the result of these studies he prepared an article in 1957. The article would have been to be published in the museum`s edition, which called “Reports and notices of the [Lviv State Historical] Museum”. This edition was never published due to a number of objective and subjective factors. Iv. Zayats’ article was not published either, although its content was known to some Lviv historians. We have find the typescript and pre-editions of this work (the text of Iv. Zayats’ article is given in the second part of our publication). The exploring of this article allows us to agree with the positive assessment of this scientific work, which was made by the former head of the Museum of Sphragistics and Numismatics of Lviv University Ivan-Julian Shpytkovskyj. It seems interesting Iv. Zayats’ attempt to consider the issue of issuance and circulation of coins of Lviv minting of the 14th – 15th centuries in the broader context of the changes that affected the Halycian-Volyn lands at this period. Also interesting his attempt to look at the status and relation of the Halychyna state to the Polish and Hungarian kingdoms through the prism of numismatics. Iv. Zayats, in particular, agreed with the opinion of some researchers who have spoken of a personal union between Halychyna and Poland during the reign of King Сasimir (Kazimierz) III and denied the fact of incorporation of Halychyna into Poland. He also wrote about the politically undefined status of Halychyna in relation to Poland and Hungary during the reign of Prince Wladyslaw of Opole and the next transformation this state into an ordinary Hungarian province during the subsequent reign of King Louis (Ludovic) of Hungary. According to Iv. Zayats’ article, the appearance of a Polish eagle on the coins minted in Lviv and the cessation of the issuance of a separate Rus coin in Lviv, was a sign of closer unification of Halychyna and Poland during the reign of King Wladyslaw II Jagiello. At the article listed the types of coins minted at this time in Lviv, presented their images and legends, draws a conclusion about the possible time of cessation of work the mint in the city. At the present time the scientific value of Iv. Zayats’ work reduced after research by Mykola Kotlyar, Stanislava Kubyak and Andriy Kryzhanivskyj. However, now it remains as an interesting monument of Ukrainian historiography of special (auxiliary) historical disciplines of the 1940s and 1950s.

The aim of the article is a comprehensive analysis of the formation, development and current state of research in Czech numismatics of the XIX - early XXI centuries in the context of coinage, penetration and use of Prague groschen as a means of payment in Central and Eastern Europe in the late Middle Ages and early modern times. The research methodology is outlined by the principles of scientificity, historicism, objectivity, and the main methods used in the study were historiographic analysis and historiographic synthesis, as well as general scientific methods of generalization and systematization. The scientific novelty is determined by the attempt to comprehensively analyze and generalize the historiographical achievements of Czech numismatics in the context of the problem of the participation of Prague money in the circulation of Central and Eastern Europe in the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. The process of formation, development and current state of Czech and Slovak numismatics in the study of chronology and geography of Grossi pragenses penetration into the coin markets of Central and Eastern Europe in the XIV-XV centuries are considered. The authors have singled out periodization of the historiographical process of numismatic research of the outlined problem is formulated and substantiated, the range of issues that need further study and scientific interpretation. Conclusions. The analysis of the historiographical work outlined in the topic of the article allows distinguishing three consecutive periods of numismatic research on the issue of minting and circulation of Prague groschen. The first period of Czech and Slovak historiography of the problem covers the 80's of the XIX - 30's of the XX century. Beginning with sporadic attempts to describe and register the known types of Prague groschen minted by Czech kings from Wenceslas II (1278-1305) to Ferdinand I (1526-1562). At the beginning of the twentieth century, these studies grew into purposeful scientific cataloguing, study, and systematization of metrological indicators of coins, details of their images, legends, and countermarks. Special studies of the preconditions for the preparation and conduct of the monetary reform of Wenceslas II, the rate of coins minted by him, and the peculiarities of the issuance policy of this monarch were begun. At the same time, a description of the stamp versions of Vladislav II's money (1471-1516) was initiated. However, the technical imperfection of the equipment for visual inspection and photo-fixation of numismatic material at that time often caused incomplete or inaccurate data. The second period of numismatic research on our topic covered the 1950s - early 1990s. At this time there is not only an expansion of the study of the history of minting and circulation of Prague groschen but also qualitative changes in the methodology of numismatic research. The stamp varieties and chronology of the issue of Prague groschen, including those minted during the reigns of John of Luxembourg, Wenceslas IV and Charles IV, Wladyslaw II, and Louis I, have been studied. Scholars described and analyzed countermarks (overprinting) on coins, drew attention to the historical and art analysis of the iconography of Prague groschen; the quality of coinage. The third, modern period of development of Czech and Slovak numismatic studies on the history of minting and circulation of Prague groschen began in the first half of the 1990s. This historiographical period differs from the previous ones primarily by the intensive replenishment of the database of numismatic sources on the topic. On the other hand, the study of coinage and circulation of Prague groschen from purely historical or numismatic grow into interdisciplinary, increasingly numismatists, to search or confirm data, use not only relevant methods of numismatics (methods of stamping and comparative analysis, topography of treasures and individual coins). allocation of periods of money circulation, methods of analysis of the composition of coin treasures), complex methods of special historical disciplines, but also modern non-destructive methods of natural sciences (Physico-chemical analysis of coin metal, spectral research, etc.). Technical perfection of modern devices used by scientists for visual inspection and macro photography of coins facilitates complete research. The current stage of research of Czech numismatists in the field of our problem is characterized by a combination of research efforts in the study of some theoretical and applied issues of minting and circulation of Prague groschen. In particular, data on recently discovered treasures of Prague groschen are published, the history of their minting in the archaic period (1300-1385) is studied, and little-known and previously unknown variants of stamps of these coins are studied. The new source base describes the technological and typological features of numerous coinage varieties of Prague groschen of Wenceslas IV (1378-1419) and Ferdinand I (1526-1562), coins are arranged in detail by type and catalogued. A separate area of numismatic research became the issue of counterfeiting Prague groschen.

This analysis deals with the historical figures of kings and emperors in Le Boccace Français, a compilation of short stories written by Donatien Alphonse François de Sade (1740-1814) in the Bastille Prison in 1787 and 1788. The author points out the flaws in the fabric of power by criticising the legislation and those who dictate or apply it (Justinian, Louis IX, and Francis I), by condemning the misbehaviour of certain rulers (Caesar, Charles VII, Charles V, Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI), or even by parodying the baptism ritual (Clovis). In some cases, the opinions expressed are either neutral or fairly positive (Hadrian, Louis XIV). On the other hand, it is interesting to dwell upon the characters who surround the historical figures, such as ministers (Colbert), advisors (Paparel), or members of the Army (Constable of Bourbon, Tierceville, Vendôme), since they also allow us to infer Sade’s views on politics. Este análisis se ocupa de las figuras históricas de reyes y emperadores en Le Boccace français, compilación de relatos breves que Donatien Alphonse François de Sade (1740- 1814) redactó en la Bastilla en 1787 y 1788. El autor muestra los defectos de la urdimbre del poder mediante la crítica a la legislación y a aquellos que la dictan o aplican (Justiniano, Luis IX, Francisco I), mediante la denuncia del mal proceder de ciertos gobernantes (César, Carlos VII, Carlos V, Luis XIII, Luis XIV, Luis XV, Luis XVI), o incluso mediante la parodia del ritual del bautismo (Clodoveo). Sin embargo, en algunos casos, las opiniones manifestadas son neutras o moderadamente positivas (Adriano, Luis XIV). Por otro lado, es interesante detenerse en personajes del entorno de estas figuras históricas tales como ministros (Colbert), consejeros (Paparel) o miembros del ejército (condestable de Borbón, Tierceville, Vendôme), ya que también nos permiten intuir el parecer de Sade sobre la política. L'auteur montre les failles du pouvoir en critiquant la législation et ceux qui la dictent ou l'appliquent (Justinien, Louis IX, François Ier), en dénonçant les mauvais comportements de certains souverains (César, Charles VII, Charles Quint, Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI), ou encore en parodiant le rituel du baptême (Clovis). Cependant dans certains cas, les opinions exprimées sont neutres ou moyennement positives (Hadrien, Louis XIV). D’autre part, il est intéressant de s’arrêter sur des personnages qui entourent ces figures historiques, comme des ministres (Colbert), des conseillers (Paparel) ou des membres de l'armée (Connétable de Bourbon, Tierceville, Vendôme), car ils nous permettent également d’entrevoir les avis de Sade sur la politique.

Not all utopias are truly imaginative, yet minor ones can be instructive or amusing. This article explores the hierarchy-obsessed French Antangil as well as some minor English ones so as to deduce further what so entranced so many about Nowhere’s possibilities. None is as radical as Utopia itself—nor as intelligent. They do, however, show the uses to which a “utopia” can be put. After a glance at Antangil this article moves to a letter from the king of Utopia and thence to Edward Howard’s royalist drama Six Days in a New Utopia (1671), an interesting failure on stage. After a few glances at other utopias the article ends with a grimly amusing avian debate concerning the desire of foreign (French) canaries to settle in Utopia (England), where they will be safe from a persecutory eagle (Louis XIV). Utopia is “nowhere,” but it is a useful nowhere. Les utopies ne sont pas toutes véritablement originales, toutefois certaines peuvent être instructives et amusantes. Cette étude explore l’Antangil, un ouvrage français obsédé par la hiérarchie, ainsi qu’un certain nombre d’ouvrages mineurs anglais, dans le but de mieux comprendre ce qui a séduit tant de lecteurs dans les possibilités d’un « Nulle part ». Aucune de ces oeuvres n’est aussi radicale que l’Utopie de More elle-même, ni aussi intelligente. Elles montrent cependant quelle peut être la fonction de telles utopies. Cette étude, après avoir considéré l’Antangil, se penche sur une lettre du roi d’Utopia, et sur le drame royaliste Six Days in a New Utopia d’Edward Howard (1671) ayant eu curieusement peu de succès sur scène. Après avoir survolé quelques autres textes similaires, on termine notre examen avec un amusant débat aviaire traitant du désir de canaris étrangers (français) de s’installer en Utopie (Angleterre), où ils seront à l’abris de la persécution d’un certain aigle (Louis XIV). On y constate qu’Utopie est un « nulle part », mais un « nulle part » utile.
