PAGLIARULO, CARLA. "I.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims at setting Igino Giordani within the broader framework of the catholic cultural environment between the two world wars. It focuses on his proposal of an «integral Christianity» as a solution to the recession which threatened the fundamental values and principles of the economy, politics and culture during the 1920's and 1930's. This is the reason why the relationships between Giordani and many of his colleagues and cultural catholic institutions have been studied in depth. The work starts with a biography, underlining how Giordani's youth has been affected by the war and the experience as a soldier, up to his peaceful death, in 1980. His life shows how the consistency of his actions with his faith made him an influent personality in his working environments, to the point that the beatification process has begun. The research is based on Giordani's writings and on the previous historiography, but the most important source is constituted by a large number of archive documents. Particularly, Giordani's private correspondence has been very useful in understanding how he acted in order to support the engagement of the catholic intellectuals during the dark fascist age and his endless activity in order to build a new humanism. The work also focuses on the relationships between Giordani and two members of the Italian catholic world of the time: Giovanni Papini and Piero Bargellini.

Lied, Justina Inês Faccini. "Emily Dickinson in her private bubble : poems, letters and the condition of presence." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/15307.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to show that Emily Dickinson was not concerned with the publication of her poems and she herself decided to withdraw from the outside world, a decisive event which contributed to the original production of her almost eighteen hundred poems and over eleven hundred letters. Emily Dickinson withdrew into her untouched private world – which here is called “the bubble” – and developed the contemplation process based on the approach of apprehending perceptions which resulted in the instant captions that have enchanted readers. Since her withdrawal was as a result of her own free choice and own writing and living conventions, she was able to be the craftsperson that enjoyed living and writing. Her perception of nature by taking instant captions of the observable natural objects is perfected by the process of contemplation developed in some of her poems. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study comes from the analysis of the complete edition of poems edited by Thomas H. Johnson, the letters edited by Mabel Loomis Todd, and the concept of Nature by Hans Georg Schenk. For the analyses of different issues related to Dickinson’s verses, withdrawal, and apprehension of perceptions, the works of the biographer Richard Benson Sewall and critics such as Albert Gelpi, Barton Levi Armand, Karl Keller, Sharon Cameron, among others, were consulted. This study aims to demonstrate that Emily Dickinson was not concerned with publication and her withdrawal within her bubble was a positive event for her life and poetry. Such conclusion might contribute to enlighten the knowledge about the life and work of such an amazing personage of American Literature and American society as Emily Dickinson has been so far.

KE, LINGXIANG. "Virginia Woolf’s Letters: Writing in the Making." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Bergamo, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10446/61857.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation means to explore the aesthetics of Woolf’s epistolary writing. For Woolf, letters become a vast field, a free space for experimenting her original theories of writing, developing her unique techniques and perfecting her style of modern writing. They also provide a space for finding her authorial voice, position and self. Delving into the six volumes of Woolf’s private letters, we first explore how they depict the author’s daily life, its wealth and intensity. Through her exchanges with her numerous addressees, Woolf redefines the epistolary genre: apart from their informative function, letters offer artistic descriptions of life and people, which are composed by Woolf in a specific manner, often fuelled by various other arts—painting, cinema, music, or drama. Such a representation transforms the most private epistolary genre into a public, dialogical and inter-medial genre. Intimacy and self-protectiveness, together with a desire for self-exposure stimulate Woolf to develop a style of “central transparency”—her figurative or suggestive method that enables her to express emotion and represent herself.

Telfer, Robert Thomas Currie. "Forum shopping and the private enforcement of EU competition law : is forum shopping a dead letter?" Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8002/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between the private enforcement of EU competition law and forum shopping with a particular focus on cross-border collective end-consumer redress. There is no coherent framework across the EU for these types of cases. This lack of uniformity has the potential to create recourse to different national courts. Lawyers may engage in forum shopping when filing lawsuits on behalf of the victims of mass torts. Such practices can provide Member States with incentives to amend their laws to attract collective proceedings and create competition between national judicial systems. However, forum shopping is not the only concern. There appears to be a paucity of cross-border collective claims. This is coupled with an apparent lack of motivation for end-consumers to seek a remedy, particularly if the only choice is to litigate outside their own legal regime. Addressing this situation is vital given that end-consumers regularly suffer harm in the form of higher prices, lower output, reduced quality and limited innovation as a result of antitrust infringements but they are rarely compensated due to legal and practical obstacles. To each end-consumer the harm may indeed be de minimis. However, the aggregate harm can amount to a considerable sum. In the absence of effective redress procedures, infringing undertakings retain the spoils of their unlawful conduct. Against this background, this thesis examines the extent to which the conflicts-of-laws rules encourage forum shopping and considers the appropriate forum and the appropriate procedural measures that need to be adopted in order to facilitate effective and equal access to justice for end-consumer victims of EU competition law violations.

Abstract:
The inherent flexibility of the letter form or epistolary mode of writing frees the writer within the framework of salutations and closings to use vocabulary and language to create, to omit or to invert conventional constraints imposed on women by a patriarchal society. The letter begins as a blank page but becomes the space for writing one’s personal thoughts and emotions to the absent other in a communicative effort to minimize the separation. This dissertation examines the female narrator in actual letters written during the Spanish emigration to the New World in the sixteenth century and four epistolary novels written by female authors during the nineteenth- and twentieth centuries. The female “I” emerges in the selected texts and attests to the writer’s ability to inhabit her own writing space. By applying Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of dialogism and Janet Altman’s formal approach to the epistolary novel, the epistolary and literary textual creations by women writers challenge the silence and traditional anonymity generally assigned to women. I explore the cultural enculturation of the transgressive female who loses her “self”, her very being because of her inability to conform to societal norms as outlined by Barbara Creed and Elaine Showalter. In addition, I apply ideas from Linda Kauffman’s study on the transformation of the female writer who metamorphoses from victim to artist through the use of pen and paper. The female ‘self’ crafted by each of the letter writers is studied as they narrate their space, exercise agency, and negotiate the conflicts and contradictions of their domestic and public space. The epistolary, whether actual or fictional, becomes a textual creation challenging the silence and traditional anonymity assigned to women. The letter, when used as a literary device, is the perfect vehicle to create a narrator who controls his or her own life’s narrative. The writer constructs an implicit recipient linking the addressee and engages the reader in an absorbing story.

Sifferlen, Gwenaelle. Thesis, Paris 4, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA040004.

Full text
Abstract:
Julienne Gauvain, alias Juliette Drouet, is mainly well-known for her fifty-year relationship with Victor Hugo. But first and foremost, she was a lavish letter writer who wrote more than 22,000 letters to her dear poet – calling them her ‘restitus’- from 1833 until she died in 1883. They were safely kept by her lover, who entrusted them to Louis Koch – Juliette Drouet’s nephew – after she died. Today, they are gradually published online so as to provide the general public, as well as researchers, with this complete astounding correspondence. The critical and scientific edition – including transcriptions, scholar and manuscript-related annotations, explanatory notes, index, glossary – of 568 letters dating from 1841 (8th anniversary of the couple’s love story) highlights their biographical, documentary and literary interests. Indeed these ‘restitus’ allow a day-to-day study of the life of Juliette Drouet, who had just withdrawn from theatrical and public life in order to fully devote herself to her love, and of Victor Hugo who, freshly elected to the Académie française on January 7th and in the process of writing Le Rhin, had to face literary and family trials, started taking his first notes on the present times and was supervising the revivals of Hernani, Ruy Blas and Angelo, tyran de Padoue. These letters also account for an accurate testimony on the status of women, the sentimental ties, the customs and all sorts of small details of the 19th century daily life. As well, they supply precious information concerning the historical, political, medical, scientific, social and artistic context of the July Monarchy and the reign of Louis-Philippe. Finally, apart from its own stylistic and literary value, this true mass of text arouses a generic reflection given its hybrid status of epistolary diary

Abstract:
This essay aims at editing 49 (forty nine) unpublished personal, political, economical and everyday letters handwritten in paper by the Brazilian Emperor, Dom Pedro II (1825-1891), and sent to his sister Januária (1822-1901) between the years 1860 and 1864. This publication has also paleographic, codicological and historical notes provided by the reading and searching of the reported events in the corpus using as the basis of study writers like Cambraia (2005), in a philological view, Barman (1999) e Schwarcz (2004), in a historical aspect, et al. Regarding the study proposed by Spina (1977), which demonstrates the transcendent function of philology and the use of the handwritten document as an object and a critical method, this essay not only proves that the corpus was handwritten by Dom Pedro II, but also searches for the facts and the described contexts in the letters as the source of future and linguistics analyse and also the basis of the historical study of Brazilian Empire. It is possible to identify specific details related to Brazil Empire at the beginning of the second half of the nineteenth century with the presented results in this essay.

Elen, Botros El Malek. Doctoral thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2158/1186326.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to examine the influence that biographical events may have had on a work marked by the intimate drives of its author, as is the case with Sade, technical psychoanalytic notions, biographical models and textual analysis tributary to psychoanalysis have been used. The imprisonment of the years 1777-1790 was examined through the private missives of the period: in them emerged the problem constituted by the falsity of the language of others, and delineating a communicative-relational impossibility. The latter, on the other hand, had already emerged in Sade's childhood years with the traumatic separation from his mother. The result of the two crucial biographical events would be (according to a Sadian neologism) the "isolisme", that is the refusal of communication and relationship with the other. This refusal would find expression in the work in the denial of altruistic feelings, in the concomitant cruel and inhuman eroticism perpetrated especially on the female figure, and in the impossibility of fully knowing "human nature". The work would then be the rearticulation into conscious symbols of what, in the erotic and communicative-relationship dimensions, tends to escape the author's consciousness and understanding. In this sense, we can see an evolution from the first to the last of the works examined - Dialogue entre un prêtre et un moribond, Les 120 Journées de Sodome, Les Infortunes de la vertu, Histoire de Juliette: an evolution that goes in the sense of a loosening of the "isolisme", an elevation of the woman from victim to tormentor and a greater knowledge of the human being. We would conclude then that the man Sade has structured himself in the work, and vice versa that the work has given a new structure to Sade's existence.

Hu Shih (1891-1962), ‘the Father of the Chinese Renaissance’, played a remarkable role in every crucial aspect in twentieth-century China. Hu was a fully documented writer of all time and a prodigious correspondent. Among Hu’s contacts, Edith Clifford Williams, an American avant-garde artist, was his most special friend. She was the one that inspired Hu in many ways when he studied in the United States. This study examines and analyzes 172 letters written by Hu to Williams, which portrayed the unconventional friendship between them and carried a profound spiritual love that went on for almost half a century. The motivation of Hu to keep such a long-term corresponding is because all along Williams was a perfect confidant for Hu, in which Hu found only she was the right companion who matched his need – intellectually and emotionally. Hu expressed diverse emotions in the letters. The most unique ones are those ‘desire’ related. Analyzing desire discourses tells us the features of affection expressing in each period and Hu’s mindset had shifted in their relationship across stages. Discussing through discourses, these desires indicate transitional differences and the common point, also on the basis and process of how they lifted their affection to greatness; how their amour to each other sublimated into a perpetual friendship with Williams’ truthful devotion to Hu Shih.

Balamosev, Konstantinos. "The language of early Byzantine epistolography in the light of unpublished letters from the Vienna papyrus collection (4th - 7th cent. AD)." Doctoral thesis, 2019. https://depotuw.ceon.pl/handle/item/3200.

Full text
Abstract:
The doctoral thesis aims at presenting the language and style of early Byzantine epistolography, as well as the ideas and emotions that underlie it, seen through the prism of unpublished material from the collection of the Austrian National Library in Vienna. Its starting point is the examination of private letters written on papyri dated from the 4th to the 7th century AD. The dissertation processes a "raw" material, thanks to which we can get an immediate insight into linguistic and stylistic evolution, social networks developing in the Byzantine province of Egypt, people and their emotions. This work consists of a catalog of the edited texts to help navigate through the material and the following parts: A. The introductory part, divided into three sections: 1) Review of literature on the history of ancient Greek epistolography, and previous monographs, key articles and research; 2) A detailed description of the work methodology; 3) Language aspects and stylistics. Part 3 discusses the most interesting discoveries from the linguistic point of view and other observations made on the basis of the edited texts, of particular value for researchers in the field of history and other related fields. B. Texts: edition of twenty-five letters made according to papyrological standards; accurate transcription; commentary on individual lines of text (analysis of the form and content of documents): grammar, phonetics, structural phenomena, prosopographic data, socio-historical analysis, paleographic comparisons with other texts. C. Conclusions: summary of research results. Finally, in the form of annexes, there appear full indexes of dates, names, professions and officials, terms related to religion and the Church, and a general index of Greek words. One of the annexes, illustrated with photos, is devoted to the abbreviations appearing in the texts. The annexes also contain a list of so-called nomina sacra, or abbreviations of a special form used to write names, proper names, and terms closely related to the Christian religion
B. Teksty: edycja dwudziestu pięciu listów wykonana wedle standardów papirologicznych; staranna transkrypcja; komentarz do poszczególnych linii tekstu (analiza formy i treści dokumentów): gramatyka, fonetyka, zjawiska strukturalne, dane prosopograficzne, analiza społeczno-historyczna, paleograficzne porównania z innymi tekstami. Aneksy zawierają także listę tzw. nomina sacra, czyli skrótów o szczególnej formie stosowanych do zapisu imion, nazw własnych i terminów ściśle powiązanych z religią chrześcijańską.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to emphasize the importance of the letter in the cinematographic work of director Manoel de Oliveira (1908-2015) by analysing of a corpus of five of his films, particularly significant from the epistolary point of view. We will compare the different types of letters present in those films, and determine the degree of its influence in the space-time of the film narrative. After summoning the discursive characteristics of the epistolary text, and assuming this is a text that, after being withdrawn from its sealed envelope, is expected to be unveiled, we will determine how the letter, when read within the film narrative, implies the disclosure of its secrecy to third parties. Adopting a comparative approach, we will make evident the transcoding processes of the letter into the film narrative, presupposing its relational dimension. Approaching the privileged and concealed themes as well as the several epistolary typologies present, we will focus on a paradox of the epistolary genre: on the one hand, it constitutes a private act between two poles, sender and receiver; on the other hand, in the context of the film narrative, private letters are made public, insofar as they are also revealed to the audience.

Abstract:
Obligational means of securing claims in the international trade Abstract The subject of this dissertation is obligational means of securing claims and their functioning in the commercial transactions with international coverage. The thesis is primarily concentrated upon the statutory securing instruments most often encountered in practice i.e. surety, financial (bank) demand guarantees, contractual assignment of receivables causa cavendi, letters of credit and letters of intent. The thesis is divided into four parts. The first part deals with the introduction into the subject of negotiable instruments of securing obligations, provides an overview of the historical development of selected instruments, endeavours to outline the difference between the securing instruments conceived as rights in rem and those seen as obligations and eventually raises the issue of methodology. Afterwards the analysis is carried out on two levels: in the second part the author focuses on the applicable approach in determining the governing law in accordance with international and national regulations and afterwards on the topic of the unified norms developed by the international organisations that may be relevant in the light of the thesis' subject-matter. In this regard the works of the International Chamber of Commerce in...

SBARBATI, Claudia. "LE STRAGI E LO STATO. NARRAZIONI SU CARTA DELLO STRAGISMO ITALIANO:CRONACA, MEMORIA E STORIA." Doctoral thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11393/251127.
