Full textThis thesis examines the origin of Giovan Ambrogio Marini’s Calloandro in Genoa’s rich and dynamic social and cultural context of the first half of the XVII century. Introductory pages to the novel’s various editions represent an important contribution about the novel’s developement in Italy, where the success of the genre wasn’t followed by a theoric and systemic study. After a research on the sources concerning the author’s biography and literary production, the first chapter presents a detailed synthesis of the novel’s plot which fixes some fundamental elements of this kind of work. The second chapter is about the novel’s narrative structure focusing on the techniques of the plot’s building. Then the third chapter describes literary models which influenced Marini’s work, in particular the Greek novels of Hellenism and the comic tradition. The fourth chapter analyses the characters' system: there are some subtle and unforeseeable characters, among many generic and insubstantial figures, that make Calloandro a unpredictable novel in which the psychological realism, typical of Ligurian novels, is combined with the taste of adventure, typical of the Venetian novels.

Full textThe thesis examines the seventeenth-century treatises on Italian versification. The corpus consists of about fifteen texts dedicated to specific prosodic aspects or to broader analyses of metrical forms (such as Tommaso Stigliani's "Art of Italian Verse" or Juan Caramuel's "Rhythmica"): these works, while maintaining a strong continuity with sixteenth-century metricology, also present several novelties, such as the theoretical acquisition of poetry for music.

Full textJohn Barclay's Argenis, a latin novel published in Paris in 1621, is one of the best sellers of its time. The reason for success is to be found in the complex narrative system conceived by the author, union of narration, history, recalled in the form of an allegory, and political thought; the foundative act of the so-called genre of the "roman à clef" ("novel with a key") is recognized in this new model of writing. The research aims at studying Barclay's novel and try to define its value in the opinion of the italian men of letters. The thesis focuses also on the influence of the Argenis on the seventeenth century italian novel. Preliminary attentions are dedicated to the variable success met by some characterizing narrative choices of the latin model within the fantasy setting novels. The italian "romans à clef" are examinated to determine the features of the genre in Italy, studying the forms and the finality of the use of history and the rethinkings imposed to the political argument. The authors examinated are: Francesco Agricoletti, Ciro Anselmi, Francesco Belli, Guidubaldo Benamati, Giovanni Francesco Biondi, Girolamo Brusoni, Niccolò Maria Corbelli, Carlo de' Dottori, Giovanni Francesco Loredano e Ferrante Pallavicino.

CUTRI', MAICOL. "Leggere il «libro aperto». Un’introduzione al «Cannocchiale aristotelico»." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/111138.
Full textThis introduction to Emanuele Tesauro’s “Il Cannocchiale aristotelico” provides for the first time a unified research on different aspects of one of the most complex and eminent treaty of the Seventeenth Century European literature. First, philological questions are investigated, involving, through the treatment of new data, the history of the text, changes between the editions approved by the author and the general structure. Then, intertextual aspects, as quotations and imitations, are clarified, in order to make understandable the complex work of the author on the text. In add, a narrative pattern is discovered above the highly rhetorical composition of examples: it works as a dramatic dialogue on witty matters between the author and Aristotle, and then the author and the reader, who is fascinated and involved in this formative dramatization. The final chapter is dedicated to the style and the use of rhetoric. A connection with oratorical genres, such as panegyric, is pointed out, as are the philosophical peculiarities of the “Cannocchiale aristotelico”, a guide for human understanding which uses for its aim all the potentialities of the Baroque literature.
