Camper, Martin. Letter versus Spirit. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190677121.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 4 turns its attention to the stasis of letter versus spirit. Traditionally, this stasis has been understood as pitting the exact words of a text against the author’s intent, but the chapter expands the notion of spirit to include other animating forces of textual meaning, such as an overarching principle of interpretation brought by readers to the text. The chapter shows how both the letter and spirit of a text can be divided, with arguers disputing the text’s real versus apparent letter or the author’s real versus apparent intent. To demonstrate how arguers construe authorial intention for their own ends, the chapter analyzes the controversy during the 2008 presidential campaign over the “God damn America” sound bite extracted from a sermon preached by Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama’s then-pastor. Critics dismissed Wright’s defense of his intentions, pointing to the sermon’s exact wording as evidence of his, and by extension Obama’s, anti-Americanism.

Flynn, Shawn W. The Pre-Born Child. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198784210.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
A previously unstudied stage of the child’s life in current scholarship, the pre-born child is an essential expression of the child’s life in the ancient Near East. Through Mesopotamian medical texts, personal letters, prayers, and the mythology that intersects with this data set, thought on pre-born and birthing children strongly suggests the child’s value in domestic cult. In particular the connection between child and deity is an important connection between the child and the domestic cult that underpins the question of value. This data illustrates how the child is understood in ancient Israel, showing that texts like Jeremiah 1 and Psalm 139 are rooted in a wider comparative matrix. Here we see where Israelite intersects and diverges from its cultural matrix to make unique claims about YHWH through the pre-born child.

Hodgkins, Christopher. Settlers in New Worlds. Edited by Andrew Hiscock and Helen Wilcox. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199672806.013.31.

Full text
Abstract:
Early modern colonial survival meant that imaginative writings about settlers in new worlds outnumbered imaginative writings by those settlers; yet new world settlers did leave literary artefacts of their interpretive communities. Writing about new worlds tended to fire the fancy, either in fantastic exploration narratives, fabulous colonial prospecti, reflective essays, or in the more outright fictions of dramatic and utopian literature, and of lyric and epic poetry. Writing in and from new worlds was often more quotidian, with nonfiction prose genres like ships’ logs, company reports, personal letters, spiritual diaries, and sermons predominating with a sprinkling of original poetry, proverb, and song. Old genres were modified, and new ones born, by necessity and invention: not only the traveller’s tale and ‘utopian’ fiction, but also the conquest story, the atrocity exposé, the settlers’ covenant, the captivity and conversion narrative, and the extended Eucharistic meditation and puritan jeremiad—and the novel.

Fitch, Suzanne P., and Roseann Mandziuk. Sojourner Truth as Orator. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216016281.

Full text
Abstract:
This work is an in-depth analysis of the full breadth of Sojourner Truth’s public discourse that places it in its proper historical context and explores the use of humor and narratives as primary rhetorical strategies used by this illiterate ex-slave to create a powerful public persona. The book provides a comprehensive survey of the life of Sojourner Truth, and includes a unique and authoritative compilation of primary rhetorical documents, such as speeches, songs, and public letters. This is the only major work to date that analyzes the breadth of Sojourner Truth’s public discourse. The volume includes a complete and authoritative compilation of her extant rhetoric, including several versions of the same speech, reports of her speaking appearances, public letters published by Truth in newspapers, and songs written and performed by her as part of her public lectures. Three chapters address the rhetorical dimensions of Truth’s public persona. First, an historical survey contextualizes her life and speaking from slave to reformer, placing into perspective the variety of experiences that comprised her background. Second, an analysis of Truth’s use of humor focuses upon how she employed the strategies of superiority and incongruity in her refutation of opponents and the establishment of her own credibility. Third, a critique of Truth’s use of narratives in her discourse reveals how both her speeches and songs rely upon three fundamental stories for their persuasive impact: her slave life and religious conversion, her use of the black jeremiad to portray race differences, and her tales of woman’s strength and moral conviction. The volume concludes with a consideration of Truth’s status as a folk legend and how she wished to be remembered.
