Abstract:

Abstract:

The work of his work reflects the crisis of figurative representation in the sixteenth century and he also operates a literary transition to Roman fiction and establishes a new regime of truth inspired by the Bible that invites the reader to adhere to his. The passage from "the Bible of the novel" to the “Bible of the novel”leaves considerable room for a readership as broad as expected

Abstract:
The text was written in Latin, in 16th century Italy. It's analyzed under 3 angles. It's scientific because it involves physical sciences, mathematics, and medicine. The commentary also outlines the linguistic techniques used. Then the text is examined from a socio-historical point of view : historical and religious context, the alchemy's role and Cardan's errors regarding it. The 3rd analytic angle is philosophical. The thoughts of the sage mix humanism, stoicism and aristotelism. The commentary allows us to isolate Cardan's multiple sources of inspiration, to conclude that he's a real encyclopaedist and that his thoughts are brilliant, progressive but often ambiguous. It seems very important to discover this text which is essential to have a better knowledge of Renaissance's mentality

Abstract:
The negritude movement was a political and artistic movement, which developed in France and in the French-speaking parts of the world in the 1930’s, criticising racial discrimination and the exploitation of the African continent, and promoting African art and cultural expression as well as a common African identity and heritage.  This study examines how some values reflected in the early literature of the negritude movement are manifested in four picture books written in the 2010’s by the Central African author Adrienne Yabouza. The study concentrates specifically on three values: the close relationship between Africans and nature, the idealization of the black woman and the attitude towards aggressions and war, and searches to understand if, and in what way, the values have changed since the days of the negritude. It also aims at analysing the possible significance of any changes, or lack thereof. The theoretical framework is based on postcolonial theory, and particularly the context of enunciation of the francophone literature from the former French colonies. Regarding the closeness to the nature and the idealization of the black woman, the study concludes that the values reflected in the books of Yabouza are very similar to those manifested in the early works of the negritude. It is suggested that this might be due to the fact that the literary field to which the books belong is strongly anchored in the West. This leads to a lack of a critical discussion about this kind of literature in Africa, something that prevents the literature from following the cultural development of the continent. Concerning the attitude towards aggressions and war, the study notes a difference between the values conveyed by the negritude and those manifested in the examined picture books. This is certainly partly explained by the fact that the picture books are written for children while the works of the negritude are supposed to be read by adults. But the study also suggests that while a critical literary discussion is largely absent in Africa, a dialogue about war and violence is much more present, something that may have contributed to the evolution of the values manifested in the work of Yabouza.

Abstract:
Johann Arndt (1555-1621) and his work are vital for the understanding of the development of pietisme in Germany. The “Four Books of True Christianity” and their diverse translations were best-sellers in their time. Ignored by the French speaking public, Arndt is situated between Lutheran orthodoxy and what is later called the Pietist movement. Despite the efforts of historical and theological research, his work withstands classification: it is quoted as an exemplar by the Lutheran theologians of his time, but his work is also claimed by radical movements to reflect their ideas. Thus, the reception of Arndt’s theology fluctuated through history. The thesis contains two important and closely linked developments: an analysis of discipleship (Nachfolge), central theme of Arndt’s True Christianity, and a consideration of the place and function of the Bible in his line of argument. The topic of discipleship is common to many authors of his time, particularly to Catholic authors of the Imitatio Christi: how does Arndt situate himself in this context? Potential critiques are looking for a Lutheran author’s position on the Bible. What position does Arndt adopt? Finally, the conclusion relies on the results of both studies combining historical, theological and litterary approaches. A careful analysis of Arndt’s language makes it possible to show that he neither uses “polished and meticulous language of dogmatic theology” (Grützmacher) nor does he search for “exclusion of misunderstanding” (Anetsberger). The theological approach shows where the surprising doctrinal expressions come from. The historical approach verifies the impact of Arndt’s work and the specificity of his public

Abstract:
In Loth century France, translation can be viewed as a process which settles the strategies of intertextual appropriation and through which the outcrop of the 'subject of writing' can be elicited. To enlighten this evolution we have focused upon it two converging analyses. The perception of the marks of an 'author-subject' recorded in the translation of “Amadis de Gaule” results first from a text-effect. By overriding the devices which, in previous romanesque adaptations, had gradually instituted the narrative economy of verisimilitude, the version under consideration wittily exhibits the deviations entailed by this very treatment. It reads as a setup of heterogeneous texts, each reflecting the mirror image of another, this specular game being assumed by a showman who actually slips his own signiature into the text. Simultaneously, around 1540, the discourse about translation posits a set of derogative values to discriminate that type of activity from the original 'invention', and correlatively it launches a new representation of the Author as free inventor and owner of his work. By tracing the shifting of the images and topoi which betray the relations of the translator both to his model and to the French language, we tend to argue that the figure of the Poet delineated by the “Deffence et illustration” stems from this evolution. Now, between the individual gesture of the Poet who appropriates his models and that of the Prince who, when embezzling and ennobling the 'work' of the translators, revives and restores the productivity of the great texts, there is a homology which testifies to the larger ideological stakes allowing to situate the new symbolical status alloted to the scriptor

Abstract:
Sisyphus, the exemplary figure of hybris in Greek mythology, and Jingwei, the bird symbolizing the sublime of human will in Chinese mythology, share common myths in their mythic narratives: the transgression of death, cyclical action and the vanity of effort. The aim of this thesis is to examine the convergences and divergences between the Sisyphus myth and the Jingwei myth, using a mythocritical study combined with a hermeneutical approach. The didactic reading, whether it's the teaching on measurement in the Greek and latin authors' interpretations of the myth of Sisyphys, or the lesson on the power of human will in the first rewritings of the Jingwei myth, is in fact about the same mental reality: the human disposition of excessive self-assertion, whose different treatments in the two literatures reveal the cultural specificities of each. As mythology is a reservoir of literary motifs for poets, both myths are called upon and transposed in analogous thematic expression: the construction of an imaginary world, the expression of sentiment, the allegorical use as a counter-model for human actions and the exaltation of heroism. Through an analysis of the tendency to rehabilitate the two figures in contemporary literature, we can conclude that these two myths, marked by the mytheme of cyclical action, are a metaphor for the human desire to surpass oneself, and that their rewritings over time address the different facets of this desire. The tension between the invincible impulse to go beyond the limit and the rational awareness of the vanity of this attempt, which is inherent in this metaphor, is manifested as much in the occidental authors' criticism of acts of excess as in the ambivalent attitude that accompanies the heroic reading of the Jingwei myth. The complexity of this tension in the Chinese cultural context, which is based on a different conception of how to act, leads to a skewed reading of Camus's Myth of Sisyphus. The praise for Sisyphus's capacity for habituation in the novel The Four Books is an eloquent example

Abstract:
AbstractThe protagonist of the chapter Sarah Wheeler, daughter of British Quaker family lived in Russia near St. Petersburg at the beginning of the 19th century until the year 1838. Using as a source material Sarah Wheeler’s correspondence the chapter analyses her spiritual life, her faith on the God and how she lived through her bereavements and how her emotions like sorrow and fear gradually evolved into an experience which gave a direction and security in his life. This is the first study in which the correspondence between Sarah Wheeler and Margaret Finlayson has been utilized.

Abstract:
Abstract: Asked about the architectural education and although he outlined his ideas on the subject mainly in two of his books: "Précisions" (1930) and "Sur les quatre routes" (1941), Le Corbusier replied: "I have never received proper education. I am self-taught even in sport. ". The amazing power of Le Corbusier’s didactic resides in five points: his training, his theoretical positioning, his invention of typologies, his diffusion of architecture, his prolific production. Thus, beyond his “Oeuvres Complètes” Le Corbusier offers to whom wants to use it, a rich educational field to discover and share. No program has eluded him whether it is villas or houses, collective housing, offices, facilities (public or private), institutional buildings, museums, factories : everything is material for invention. This invention is accompanied with his diffusion of architecture, of his ideas in books or lectures all over the world. But this is nothing compare to his production to various scales from the minimum housing to the monumental building. Therefore with the close look on the Modern Quarters Frugès project built in Pessac in 1926 we will examine how this "laboratory" is an educational experience that has of exemplarity value and is still relevant today. Abstract:
Introduction: Almost two million people worldwide die annually due to hepatic-related diseases. Half of these diseases are attributed to cirrhosis and the other half are related to hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The liver is also a metastasis hub from adjacent organs. This research aims to create an accurate high-quality delineation of the human liver and prepare them to be 3D printed for medical analysis to help aid medical practitioners in pre-procedural planning. Materials and Methods: Convolutional neural networks (ConvNets) are used to perform the liver tissues delineation. A famous ConvNet, named U-net, is used as the basis benchmark architecture that is also known for its great outcomes in the medical segmentation field. Contrast-enhanced computerized tomography (CT) scans are used from the famous Medical Segmentation Decathlon Challenge (Task 8: Hepatic Vessel), abbreviated as MSDC-T8. It contains 443 CT scans, which is considered the largest dataset that contains both the tumors and vessels ground-truth segmentation. Some researchers also generated the liver masks for this dataset, making it a complete dataset that contains all the relevant tissues’ ground-truth masks. Results: Currently, the liver delineation has been successfully done with very high DICE = 98.12% (higher than the state-of-the-art results DICE = 97.61%), where a comparison between two famous schedulers namely, ReduceLRonPlateau and OneCycleLR has been conducted. Moreover, the 3D liver volume creation has also been completed and built via the marching cube algorithm. Conclusions/Future Directions: The developed ConvNet can segment livers with high confidence. The tumor(s) and vessels tissues segmentation are also under investigation now. Moreover, newly devised self-organized neural networks (Self-ONN) look promising and will be investigated soon. Lastly, a GUI will be built so that the medical practitioner can just insert the CT volume and get the 3D liver volume with all the segmented tissues.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Understanding Acoustics: An Experimentalist’s View of Sound and Vibration Autor: Steven L. Garret | Springer, 2020 Spatial Hearing: The Psychophysics of Human Sound Localization Autor: Jens Blauert | MIT Press, 1996 (Rev. Ed.).

Abstract:
Limited-profit housing plays a significant role in Austria’s housing market. Around a quarter of all households live in homes owned or managed by a limited-profit housing association (LPHA). These associations are characterised by a distinct business model, based on the premise of cost-recovery and revolving funds. By deviating both from the logic of for-profit housing and from public housing, LPHAs occupy a distinct ‘Third Sector’ role in Austria’s housing market. This paper describes the key mechanisms and principles of limited-profit housing, including how they are financed, how rents are set, what components are included in price calculations and how they use revolving funds to finance future affordable housing construction. The paper also elaborates the impact of the limited-profit business model on rent levels and draws on a recent study to demonstrate their wider economic impacts.

Abstract:
New evidence suggests that over four months after the closure of early childhood development (ECD) programmes on 18 March 2020, the ECD sector was likely to be operating at less than a quarter of its pre-lockdown levels. Of the 38 percent of respondents from the new NIDS-CRAM survey reporting that children aged 0-6 in their households had attended ECD programmes before the lockdown in March, only 12 percent indicated that children had returned to these programmes by mid-July, well after programmes were allowed to reopen. Using these findings, we estimate that just 13 percent of children aged 0-6 were attending ECD programmes by mid-July to mid-August compared to 47 percent in 2018. The last time that ECD attendance rates were as low as this was in the early 2000s. At this point it is not yet clear what proportion of these declines are only temporary, or whether there will be a lasting impact on ECD enrolment in the country. This dramatic contraction in the ECD sector relates to prohibitive costs to reopening ‘safely’ imposed by the regulatory environment, coupled with shocks to the demand side for ECD programmes (both in terms of reduced household incomes and parent fears of children contracting COVID-19). When viewed from a broader socio-economic lens, the threat of ECD programme closures across the nation will have impacts beyond ECD operators to the lives of millions of children, millions of households and millions of adults who rely on these ECD services. A swift intervention by government is necessary to save this important sector and limit the ripple effect of programme closures on multiple layers of society.

Abstract:
Women migrant domestic workers (WMDWs) constitute 7.7 percent of migrant workers worldwide, of whom more than a quarter live and work in the Arab region. In Lebanon, as in other Arab countries, WMDWs are recruited through the sponsorship system, Kafala. Under this system, a potential migrant worker can only obtain legal residency and a work permit in the country of destination if she is sponsored by a specific employer. Once in the destination country, the worker cannot transfer to a new employer unless granted permission by the original sponsor. The system heightens the social, economic, and legal vulnerability of WMDWs and has been described as unfree or bound labor and a system of racialized servitude. Yet, Kafala is not a written policy but rather a collection of administrative procedures, customary practices, and socially acceptable norms that are maintained by various players throughout the migration process. The question then arises as to whether advocacy efforts that focus on abolishing Kafala as a legal term would mitigate employers’ exploitative practices that violate the workers’ rights and freedoms, particularly in a country like Lebanon. This policy brief is based on a study carried out under the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Work in Freedom project designed to mitigate the exploitation and forced labor of women migrating from South to West Asia to work in the domestic and garment sectors. This brief explores knowledge, awareness and attitudes to Kafala by employers in Lebanon.

Abstract:
The specific objectives of this research were the study of the physical and nutritional properties of the In Ovo Feeding (IOF) solution (i.e. theosmostic properties and the carbohydrate: protein ratio composition). Then, using the optimal solution for determining its effect on hatchability, early nutritional status and intestinal development of broilers and turkey during the last quarter of incubation through to 7 days post-hatch (i.e. pre-post hatch period) by using molecular, biochemical and histological tools. The objective for the last research phase was the determination of the effect of in ovo feeding on growth performance and economically valuable production traits of broiler and turkey flocks reared under practical commercial conditions. The few days before- and- after hatch is a critical period for the development and survival of commercial broilers and turkeys. During this period chicks make the metabolic and physiological transition from egg nutriture (i.e. yolk) to exogenous feed. Late-term embryos and hatchlings may suffer a low glycogen status, especially when oxygen availability to the embryo is limited by low egg conductance or poor incubator ventilation. Much of the glycogen reserve in the late-term chicken embryo is utilized for hatching. Subsequently, the chick must rebuild that glycogen reserve by gluconeogenesis from body protein (mostly from the breast muscle) to support post-hatch thermoregulation and survival until the chicks are able to consume and utilize dietary nutrients. Immediately post-hatch, the chick draws from its limited body reserves and undergoes rapid physical and functional development of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) in order to digest feed and assimilate nutrients. Because the intestine is the nutrient primary supply organ, the sooner it achieves this functional capacity, the sooner the young bird can utilize dietary nutrients and efficiently grow at its genetic potential and resist infectious and metabolic disease. Feeding the embryo when they consume the amniotic fluid (IOF idea and method) showed accelerated enteric development and elevated capacity to digest nutrients. By injecting a feeding solution into the embryonic amnion, the embryo naturally consume supplemental nutrients orally before hatching. This stimulates intestinal development to start earlier as was exhibited by elevated gene expression of several functional genes (brush border enzymes an transporters , elvated surface area, elevated mucin production . Moreover, supplying supplemental nutrients at a critical developmental stage by this in ovo feeding technology improves the hatchling’s nutritional status. In comparison to controls, administration of 1 ml of in ovo feeding solution, containing dextrin, maltose, sucrose and amino acids, into the amnion of the broiler embryo increased dramatically total liver glycogen in broilers and in turkeys in the pre-hatch period. In addition, an elevated relative breast muscle size (% of broiler BW) was observed in IOF chicks to be 6.5% greater at hatch and 7 days post-hatch in comparison to controls. Experiment have shown that IOF broilers and turkeys increased hatchling weights by 3% to 7% (P<0.05) over non injected controls. These responses depend upon the strain, the breeder hen age and in ovo feed composition. The weight advantage observed during the first week after hatch was found to be sustained at least through 35 days of age. Currently, research is done in order to adopt the knowledge for commercial practice.

Abstract:
An estimated 42 percent of homes in Costa Rica are in need of repair, expansion, or some other improvement, and nearly a quarter ofthose deficient dwellings are so dilapidated as to represent an immediate danger to those who live in them. The poorer the family, the more serious the problem: an estimated 83 percent of deficient housing is occupied by families living at the base of the pyramid (BOP). Although there is demand for home improvement loans, nearly 40 percent of the BOP is completely excluded from the formal financial system because loan rates, amounts, and terms are not tailored to their needs and because banks doubt their repayment capacity. Mutual Cartago de Ahorro y Préstamo (Mucap) is a Costa Rican non-profit financial institution founded in 1970 that promotes savings and national and foreign investment to solve the country¿s housing deficit. Mucap takes its services directly to clients through a network of 23 agencies nationwide and 13 credit stands in stores such as Walmart, Maxi Pali, and Maxi Bodega.

Abstract:
Aproveite a leitura! Cordialmente, Editores Revista A&V nº 54, dezembro de 2022.

Abstract:
Inequalities in opportunities, power and privilege are evident in our working lives. Historical structures shape opportunities in the career pipelines of different groups of people, including access to education, recruitment and promotion, occupational segregation and the so-called ‘motherhood penalty’. Often these dynamics result in certain groups, particularly men and traditionally privileged ethnic groups, occupying higher status and better paid positions, than other groups – resulting in what are called ‘pay gaps’. Increasing transparency on pay gaps helps to ensure that employers are being fair in providing equitable (fair) opportunities and reducing inequalities across the workforce it also holds them accountable for closing the gap. In the UK, reporting the gender pay gap has been mandatory since 2017 for organisations with more than 250 employees. The law has driven an unprecedented level of transparency on the gender pay gap in the UK and provided valuable information to employers and employees on inequality inside their organisations. To date, however, reporting the ethnicity pay gap remains voluntary. Global Health 50/50 (GH5050) tracks and publicises the policies and practices of nearly 200 organisations active in global health for their commitments to gender equality. This Report takes a deep dive into the reporting of gender and ethnicity pay gap data of 43 organisations in the GH5050 sample which have a presence in the UK. This Report focuses specifically on UK-based organisations given the general lack of pay gap reporting worldwide. The Report finds that, between 2017 and 2022, some progress was made in closing the gap – from 12.7% to 10.9% for median pay gap, and from 14.3% to 10.8% for mean pay gap. A quarter of organisations, however, saw an increase in their gender pay gap by a median 3.6 percentage points. In the absence of mandatory reporting, we found that only 13 organisations voluntarily reported their ethnicity pay gaps in 2022, mostly reporting binary gaps between white and ethnic minority employees. While binary reporting in isolation is generally not recommended, it may be needed to protect salary information of ethnic minority employees when numbers of employees are small. Among this (limited) data, we found a median gap of 3.7% and a mean gap of 6.9% favouring white employees. This Report finds that there has been some positive change since mandatory gender pay gap reporting was introduced in 2017. Yet slow and uneven progress indicates a clear need for continued advocacy to ensure pay gap transparency and to close the gender pay gap. This advocacy should include the expansion of mandatory pay gap reporting to include ethnicity; and for very large organisations, an intersectional approach to the data (combining gender and ethnicity, for example) will provide even more nuance and understanding of where action is needed. Even in the absence of legislative requirements, employers in global health, which are often working to advance social justice and gender equality, should act as models for career equality including by publicly reporting pay gap data. This data can inform target-setting and the development of policies to reduce the gap, such as including multiple women in shortlists for recruitment and promotion, and transparency in pay negotiations. Closing the unjust space between women’s and men’s pay is an urgent priority and would ensure that women are equally and fairly paid for their contributions to organisations and to society. Increasing transparency of the pay gaps will rely on more countries passing legislation, as a critical component of comprehensive frameworks for diversity, inclusion and equality in the workplace.
