Abstract:

The Peppered loach, Lepidocephalichthys guntea is the least concerned freshwater species, commonly found in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. In West Bengal, it is popularly known as “Guntey” & it has commercial and food value. The current study aimed to the estimation of the length-weight relationship, condition, and relative condition factor (Kn) of the fish species Lepidocephalichthys guntea, habitats of Kangsabati river in the District West Midnapore, West Bengal, India. Total 161 numbers of species were collected between August 2019 to July 2020 and considered for examination. The fishes ranged from 5.4 to 10.7 cm in total length & 0.72 to 9.73 g in weight. The scatter diagram exhibits a linear relationship between the log length & log weight. The female species has a higher “b” value (b=3.452, P<0.05), which is greater than 3 which justifying a positive allometric growth. The parabolic equation among total length and weight of L. guntea is labeled as W= 0.008744991 L 2.7496 for males, W= 0.002153098 L 3.452 for females & W= 0.007575793 L 2.8155 for the combination of male and female species. Higher r2 (0.859, P<0.05) value in combined of male & female justifying a strong relationship between length and length. The mean condition(K) & relative condition factor (Kn) values were found to be the height in the male category with "K" value 0.654 & "Kn” value1.174 respectively indicating the well-being of the species. Although, this species does not sternly follow the cube law & shows a well status of health condition in their natural habitat.

Abstract:

Four loaches, namely, Lepidocephalichthys guntea (Hamilton, 1822), Lepidocephalichthys annandalei (Chaudhuri, 1912), Lepidocephalichthys thermalis (Valenciennes, 1846), and Lepidocephalichthys berdmorei (Blyth, 1860) from the Cobitidae family, were collected from the Surma River, Bangladesh. Of the total 376 speciminia, 193 males (51.32%) and 183 females (48.67%) in number; were collected with the support of local fishermen using a variety of nets at 15-day intervals from November 2022 to April 2023. The length-weight relationship (LWR) parameters were analyzed using the equation W = a L b . L. annandalei displayed a notable isometric growth pattern, with a condition factor (K) ranging from 0.725 to 0.734. In addition, L. thermalis exhibited isometric growth among males, while females showcased positive allometric growth with a condition factor (K) varying between 0.697 and 0.714. L. guntea exhibited a consistent positive allometric growth pattern across all aspects, with a condition factor (K) ranging from 0.729 to 0.738. In contrast, L. berdmorei demonstrated positive allometric growth, but males and females both exhibited a negative allometric growth pattern. The condition factor (K) for L. berdmorei ranged from 0.699 to 0.702. This suggests a complex growth pattern influenced by both length and weight in every experimental loach. The research underscores the importance of recognizing gender-specific variations in growth patterns within species.

Abstract:

Abstract The cellular organizations of intestine in Lepidocephalichthys guntea (Hamilton, 1822) have been described by light as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The intestine is short and straight like, marked into anterior, middle and posterior region based on mucosal folds, number and size of columnar epithelial cells and mucous cells, thickness of submucosa and muscularis layer. The mucosa of anterior intestine forms high folds, which are lined with compactly arranged columnar epithelial cells and mucous cells. In the middle intestine, folds are pointless whereas the posterior intestine is without folds. The submucosa is formed of thin layer of connective tissue, contained collagen bundles and blood capillaries, comparatively well developed in the posterior intestine. By scanning electron microscopy, outlines of the luminal surface of anterior and middle intestine is embossed with oval or rounded columnar epithelial cells contained densely packed stubby microridges. The posterior intestine has closely set longitudinal folds characterized with minute blood capillaries and columnar epithelial cells having inconspicuous microridges. Ultrastructurally, the mucosal surface of the intestine consists of mucous cells with electron dense granules and columnar epithelial cells having numerous microvilli, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes and Golgi body. Cellular components of the anterior and middle intestine participate in the absorption whereas the presence of enormous blood vessels and capillary net work of posterior intestine probably responsible for air breathing.

Abstract:

This study was conducted to determine the biochemical composition of Botia dario and Lepidocephalichthys guntea collected from different regions in Bangladesh. Samples were collected from fishermen during the study period. Fishing activities were done either by dewatering process or by using fishing gears. Different types of gear were used to collect fish samples includes lift net, push net, cast net, and other fishing gear. For B. Dario the moisture content was 68.50%, ash content was 2.72%, crude protein content was 15.50 %, lipid content was 12.21%, and carbohydrate content was 1.07% in wet weight basis and 12.50% moisture, 8.68% ash, 63.2% crude protein, 13.07% lipid, and 0.11% carbohydrate was in dry matter basis. The nutritive components of L. guntea fish were 77.89% as moisture, 3.09% as ash, 16.54% as crude protein, 1.53% as lipid, 0.95% as carbohydrates on a moisture basis, and 10.11% as moisture, 13.84% as ash, 64.70% as crude protein, 6.92% as lipid, 4.43% as carbohydrates on a dry matter basis. The overall study revealed that B. dario and L. guntea are very rich in nutrient composition. All of the information will be helpful for researcher and policy makers for proper conservation and management of these fish.

Abstract:

The study on morphometric and meristic characters of two species of fresh water fishes under order Cypriniformes were carried out in Ichthyology laboratory of Zoological Survey of India, Northern Regional Centre, Dehradun. During the present investigation, 2 families under Cyprinidae and Cobitidae fish species are molacarplet, Amblypharyngodonmola Hamilton (1822) and Lepidocephalichthys guntea (Hamilton, 1822) were identified. The 22 morphometric and 5 meristic counts were studied from Song River, Dehradun. The result showed that all the morphometric characters of two fishes are dependent on the total length. The analyzed data of morphometric dimensions of fish species would be beneficial for the policy makers or planners to develop the scientific strategies for their protection and conservation. The findings will also set the scientific principles for the management and sustainable development of the commercially essential freshwater food fishes.

The North Eastern Sates including Assam are very rich in aquatic bio-resources and dominated by several endemic fish resources. The study was conducted from June 2018- July 2019 in two different fish assembling villages viz. Chamaguri (W) and Garokuta (North) of Urpad Beel and fish species were recorded along with their IUCN Conservation status. Alto-gether, 31 ornamental fish species belonging to 16 Genera, 15 Families, and 6 Orders be-longing to orders like Beloniformes, Cypriniformes, Osteoglossiformes, Siluriformes, Sym-branchiformes, Perciformes, Tetradontiformes were recorded. Out of the recorded fish spe-cies, Lepidocephalichthys guntea (Hamilton-Buchanan,1822), Channa gachua (Hamilton, 1822) and Chanda nama (Hamilton, 1822) were assessed as NE, Botia rostrata (Gun-ther,1868) and Channa gachua (Hamilton, 1822), Mystus vittatus ( Bloch, 1794) as VU, Ctenops nobilis (Mc Clelland, 1845) as NT as per IUCN Status 2013. Abstract:

The correlations between fisheries diversity and environmental variables of Nepal’s Pond are poorly understood. This study aims to investigate temporal variation of fish assemblage at Taruwa Pond in Nawalparasi district, Province no. 4, Nepal from October 2018 to April 2019. For the fish agglomeration, cast net of 4 kg in weight and 3.80 m in length and 22.5 m breadth with 12 mm mesh size was used. In total, 579 individuals representing 16 fish species, 10 families, and 12 genera were recorded. According to similarity percentage analysis, the most contributory species were Puntius ticto (27.92%) followed by Danio devario (12.06%), Puntius terio (9.76%), Badis badis (7.31%), Lepidocephalichthys guntea (5.57%) and Puntius sophore (5.57%). Analysis of similarity suggested that fish community structure was significantly different in temporal variation (R = 0.321, p<0.01). Based on the cluster analysis, fish assemblages were isolated into two distinct groups at Bray-curtis similarity. The Canonical Correspondence Analysis distinctly indicated that the water parameters of dissolved oxygen, carbon-dioxide, depth, and water temperature play an important role in influencing the fish assemblage structure of Taruwa Pond.

Abstract:

Abstract An investigation was conducted to identify the bacterial isolates and to study the antibiotic resistance patterns of Aeromonas spp. and Salmonella spp. from the skin, gills, and gut of the fresh water loach, Lepidocephalichthys guntea (HAMILTON BUCHANAN) and water sampled from four different sites along the River Lotchka in Darjeeling District, West Bengal, India. Isolated bacteria were identified by different biochemical procedures, and Polymerase Chain Reaction was performed using genus specific 16S rDNA primers for confirmation of identification of Aeromonas spp. and Salmonella spp. Antibiotic susceptibility test of bacterial isolates was also done by Disc Diffusion method. A total of 49 Aeromonas spp. and 24 Salmonella spp. were isolated from tested samples. Maximum resistance was exhibited for Penicillin-G, Ampicillin, and Cephalothin (>75% resistant Aeromonas spp. and >60% Salmonella spp. in the four different sites of river and body parts of fish). Ciprofloxacin and Tetracycline resistance was almost nil. The results indicated that the river water and resident fish were contaminated with multi-antibiotic resistant enteric pathogenic bacteria. This study, thus, provides valuable information for making policy decisions aimed at reducing microbial contamination of fish and the indiscriminate use of antibiotics.

Abstract:

Fish fauna of Doon Valley (part of District Dehradun) was explored alongwith 15 physical and chemical water quality parameters. Fish and water sampling was done of five major rivers viz., Baldi, Song and Suswa in the Eastern and Tons and Asan in the Western part of Doon Valley. While doing the taxonomical analysis, four teratological evidence were recorded in the fish species. Teratological manifestation with respect to furcated rostral barbel was observed in one female specimen of Paracanthocobitis botia, furcated maxillary barbel was seen in one specimen of Glyptothorax pectinopterus, forked rostral barbel in Lepidocephalichthys guntea and furcated caudal fin in Heteropneustes fossilis. The fluctuation pattern in water quality all through 3 different seasons reflected an increment pattern from summer to rainy in the parameters like depth, width, water velocity, CO2, turbidity and TDS. The declining trend in the values of the aforesaid parameters was noticed beyond rainy months. From rainy to winters, the increment in values was noticed in DO, pH, hardness, alkalinity, BOD, nitrate and phosphate was observed. The parameters which showed increment in values from winters to summers include AT, WT, CO2. Width, depth and WV have been the chief physical factors with wide range of variations. BOD, Hardness, NO3 TDS, DO and CO2 values seemed more important from the quality of water chemistry point of view. Seasonal variation in physical and chemical parameters have also been observed.

The study was conducted to produce fish sauce from small freshwater fishes like Kholisa (Colisa fasciatus), Tit punti (Puntius ticto), Jat punti (Puntius sophore), Tengra (Mystus vittatus), Taki (Channa punctatus), Gutum (Lepidocephalichthys guntea), Guchi (Macrognathus pancalus), Veda (Nandus nandus), and Bujuri (Mystus tengara) by using different concentrations of salt (25% as Treatment-I, 30% as Treatment-II and 35% as Treatment-III). Fishes were fermented for 9 months by the combined action of microorganisms and enzymes present in fish tissue and viscera in presence of salt. During fermentation the initial protein content in fish was 15.17% which were nearly digested and liquefied at the end of fermentation. Crude protein content on the basis of total nitrogen were found to be 14.58, 13.88 and 12.63% in Treatment-I, II and III respectively while the highest ash content in fish sauce was 22.97% in Treatment-III. Initial Total Volatile Base Nitrogen in fish was 1.92 mg/100g, which reached 20.88, 20.52 and 20.31 mg/100g respectively in three treatments. Initial aerobic plate count (APC) in fish was 5.99 × 106 cfu/g and after fermentation and 15 days of aging the APC in fish sauce was reduced to 1.53 × 104 cfu/ml in Treatment-I, 1.40 × 104 cfu/ml in Treatment-II and 1.27 × 104 cfu/ml in treatment-III. The major bacterial groups identified in fish sauce were Bacillus, Micrococcus, Lactobacillus and Pseudomonas. Abstract:

Seasonal variation of water quality parameters and health condition of some small endangered open water fishes are Baila (Glossogobius giuris), Gutum (Lepidocephalichthys guntea) and Tara baim (Macrognathus aculeatus) was carried out through clinical and histological observation from Kailla beel of Ishargonj upazila, Mymensingh and Surma river, Gobindogonj upazila, Sunamgonj district, Sylhet region for a period of eight months from September 2014 to April 2015. Water quality parameters like water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, alkalinity, hardness, and nitrate were recorded. Water temperature, pH, alkalinity and hardness were found at unfavorable level for fish in mid November and January. Clinical examinations of the fish were carried out at monthly intervals and any kind of abnormalities were recorded. Clinically it was observed that, fish was affected with fin and tail rot, gill rot, parasitic infestation, nutritional deformities, numerous red spots and patches in lateral and ventral regions, large deep whitish ulcers reached up to deep ulcers especially in December and January in both region. Samples of skin, muscle, gill, liver and kidney were collected and processed for histological observations. Major pathology in the skin and muscle were epidermis separated from dermis, presence of fungal granuloma, vacuums, hemorrhage and necrosis. Loss of primary and secondary gill lamellae, hypertrophy and primary gill lamellae separated, necrosis and hemorrhage were found in the gill. Large vacuums, necrosis and hemorrhage were observed in liver and kidney. Among the affected fish organs skin and muscle, gills were more affected than the internal organs like liver and kidney. Overall, clinical and histological observations of fishes were found to be more affected in December and January. Whereas, in the months of mid February to April, the pathological condition of fish gradually healed up to normal except few vacuums and hemorrhage. Under histopathological observations, fishes of Kailla beel were more affected than the fishes of surma river. Abstract:

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as Hg, As, and Pb have become concentrated in the aquatic ecosystem as a result of increased human activities. However, these substances frequently have synergistic or antagonistic effects on the human body or other animals. As a result, there are concerns world-wide that commercially available food products, especially fish, may be contaminated with hazardous elements. In this study, samples of four selected fishes, Gutum (Lepidocephalichthys guntea), Baim (Macrognathus pancalus), Baila (Glossogobius giuris), Meni (Nandus nandus) were analyzed from one of the largest freshwater wetlands (designed as a Ramsar Site) in South Asia to evaluate PTEs contamination status and human health risk assessment. The result demonstrated that the degree of contamination for six PTEs decreased in the following sequences for fish: Fe > Zn > Cu > Pb > As > Hg. The edible part of G. giuris had the maximum value for Hg (0.42 μg/g dw), while N. nandus predominantly accumulated As (<0.41 μg/g dw). The estimated daily intake (EDI) values ranged from 0.003 to 1.75, which was much lower than the recommended values. The hazard index (HI), THQ, total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) scores through consuming fish followed the decreasing order of Fe > Hg > Cu > Zn > Pb. The values for each index were less than 1, indicating that there were no substantial health risks for the consumers. The carcinogenic risks (CR) derived from the intake of Pb ranged from 4.92 × 10−8 to 4.14 × 10−8 for males and 5.45 × 10−8 to 4.59 × 10−8 for females, which also did not exceed the standard limit (1.00 × 10−6). This study demonstrated that, under the existing consumption rate, there was no potential health harm to consumers from consuming the studied fishes. This study offers a chance to regularly check PTEs in this environment, reducing the contamination of heavy metals.

Abstract:

Species diversity with indices, distribution and abundance of fishes of Seti Gandaki River Basin, Pokhara, Nepal are described from five study sites, three along the main channel and two in major tributaries. Fishes were sampled using a cast-net following pass-removal method. Environmental variables were determined following the standard methods. In total, 30 species belonging to five orders, nine families and 24 genera with absolute abundance of 10,659 were recorded. A longitudinal pattern of distribution and species richness from upstream to downstream sites (17 to 21 species) was observed. Cyprinids were dominant followed by silurids, balitorids, channids, mastacembelids, belonids and cobitids. Distribution pattern and abundance data showed that the species Tor tor, Tor putitora, Chaguninus chagunio, Barilius barila, Opsarius barna, Danio rerio, Lepidocephalichthys guntea, Parachiloglanis hodgarti and Amblyceps mangois were not common in the study area. The environmental variables such as depth, width, discharge and temperature showed effect upon species richness, abundance, distribution and diversity indices, which had lower values at upstream pre-urban sites than at downstream post-urban sites. A sharp decline in species richness, abundance and diversity indices at urban site (10 species) indicated urban influence.

Abstract Foraging profitability is one of the significant factors affecting habitat selection in fishes. The food habits of the fish species vary seasonally due to the dynamic nature of their environment. For that, the dietary analysis of a fish is essential in the case of fish diversity research. Most of the variations in prey size consumed by piscivores were correlated to the differences in piscivore body size, which morphological constraints can explain. The present study aimed to investigate the ecomorphological assemblage of small indigenous freshwater fish species from smaller lentic freshwater bodies based on a range of morphological traits and evaluate fish assemblages with respect to the feeding guilds. Freshwater ponds around Birbhum district, West Bengal (India) were selected for the collection of fish species, namely Amblypharyngodon mola, Puntius sophore, Esomus danrica, Lepidocephalichthys guntea, Chanda nama, Parambassis lala, Trichogaster fasciata, Anabas testudineus and Glossogobius giuris. Morphometric and gut content analysis were done, and the trophic guild matrix, taxonomic distance matrix, and morphological matrix were calculated. The result showed a strong association between ecomorphological traits and trophic structure, indicating an independent assemblage pattern beyond the taxonomic influence.

Abstract:

The Inland fisheries and aquaculture play an important role in providing cheap animal protein to the human dietary composition of the rural Assam in India. Fish groups like carps, clupeids, perches, murrels, catfishes, minnows etc. comprise a good number of species in the region. Apart from the riverine fisheries different wetland fisheries associated with the two major rivers, namely the Brahmaputra and Barak in Assam have contributed a major part in fish production. The aim of the present study is to enquire about the numerical relative abundance of fishes in Chandakhal wetland located in Dhubri district, in the state of Assam, India. This is an investigative study based on the data collected from fish catch at the designated landing stations. It finds that the numerical relative abundance of most of the valued food fishes falling under Major Fish Group is less than 1.00% and the total numerical relative abundance of the Major Group fishes constitutes only 4.05%. Among the Major Group fishes Labeo calbasu has the highest relative abundance of 0.74%. Under the Intermediate fish group, the most abundant species is Macrognathus pancalus having the numerical relative abundance 5.58%. Again, among the Minor Group, Lepidocephalichthys guntea is the most relatively abundant fish species whose numerical relative abundance is 7.92%. The ‘near threatened’ species like Wallago attu and Chitala chitala are having relative abundances of 0.23% and 0.09% respectively and the ‘endangered’ species Clarias magur is found to have the relative abundance as low as 0.08% in the present study.
