Abstract:
Introduction: Airway management can be a major concern, due to the possibility of encountering difficult ventilation and intubation. The Modified Intubation Difficulty Scale (MIDS) is a quantitative scale that can objectively compare nasotracheal intubation. LEMON method which consists of following assessments; Look-Evaluate-Mallampati-Obstruction-Neck mobility and modified LEMON scores (LEON) are popular scoring systems described for airway management due to their easy usability. We aimed to evaluate usability of the LEMON and LEON scores in patients who underwent oral and maxillofacial surgery by studying correlation between each score and the MIDS. Materials and Methods: The records of 72 patients were reviewed retrospectively. At the pre-anesthetic evaluation; airway assessments were recorded according to LEMON, LEON scores; MIDS were recorded after intubation. Patients were allocated into two groups: Non-difficult (NonD; MIDS ≤5) and Difficult (D; MIDS >5). Correlations between scores were analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve plots were used to determine possible cut-off values; specificity, sensitivity, negative-predictive values for LEON and LEMON scores. In all analyses, p<0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: LEMON and LEON scores were correlated with the MIDS. Analysis of ROC curve plots revealed 2 cut-off values (≥4 and ≥5) for LEMON; 1 cut-off value (≥4) for LEON score. Among the scores, LEMON (≥4), LEON had the highest sensitivity and negative-predictive values (both 100%); LEON showed higher specificity than the LEMON (≥4) (96.7% vs 91.8%). LEMON (≥5) had the highest specificity (98.4%) but the lowest sensitivity (90.4%), negative-predictive value (90.9%) among the group. Conclusion: LEON scores ≥4 can be effectively used with 100% sensitivity, 96.7% specificity and, 100% negative-predictive-value for predicting difficult airway and intubation in elective maxillofacial surgeries. Keywords: Oral and maxillofacial surgery, airway assessment, LEON Score, LEMON Score, Modified Intubation Difficulty Scale

Abstract:
This thesis presents a new animation method based on topology. It consists in animating a space partition while ensuring its consistency. The scenes are described from a high-level language depending on the application. The animation system relies on an event approach which detects topological events. The animation is generated from the sequential processing of all events. During the motion of entities, the date of collisions is computed and events are generated. For processing those collisions, events are handled with respect to their local contexts (both geometrical and semantical). This thesis also presents an application in geology which allows the user to generate a subsoil evolution from some natural phenomena described by a scenario. A scenario is made of a sequence of geological phenomena (sedimentation, erosion, fault creation and sliding) analyzed by the animation system. A phenomenon is therefore translated into a set of initial events. After the animation has been generated, the geologist can analyze and validate it with the semantical and historical information given by the model

Smuts, Leon. "Relasies in die chaosteorie / Leon Smuts." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/778.

Full text
Abstract:
The central purpose of this study is the integration of modem philosophical thinking with different chaos theory principles and definitions to form relational perspectives. Relations are used in different contexts to base the causes of deterministic chaos (chaost) in the laws of nature which constitutes order. The chaost-attractor is used as subjective conception to investigate the possibilities of hidden order in a seemingly chaotic state of the objective reality. Relevant definitions of the chaos theory were analysed methodically and transcendentally with the aid of concepts of order and relations. Attention is given to the broad associations and analogies from philosophy and other disciplines which relate to the connectivity of objects to form systems. Subjective model development was done which is used to consequentially analyse some statements from published research which applied principles of chaost. It is argued that: the intrinsic properties of objects determine the causality of forces which bind objects to compose systems; a web of interactive bonds functions subjective to laws of nature which determine whether a system is in a state of order, chaost or real chaos; a dynamical transfer of many intrinsic and asymmetric properties via internal bonds constitutes non-linear connectivity which causes a sensitivity for initial conditions. It is found that the chaost of the chaos theory is not the same as real, objective chaos. The random-like evolution of a dynamic system is determined by the occurrence of irregularities and uncertainties in its internal order. A web of interactive bonds distribute small changes self-similar and scale-relevant. The difficulty in describing and explaining the complex behaviour of composed entities is simplified by the proposed web-chaost model.

Fontana, Michèle. "Leon bloy : journalisme et subversion 1874-1917." Lyon 2, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995LYO20023.

Full text
Abstract:
While criticisms about bloy's works are resuming, his articles make a forsaken corpus which is most often reduced to a violent and reactionary production. As for him, bloy has never stopped proclaiming himself as "a town-crier" of god, a pamphleeter and an artist too. The unity of this corpus being postulated, this survey will establish that its subversive force comes much more from a literary process than from political positions. A diachronic view seems to be necessary in order to set up how bloy, committed in conservative newspapers, is forced to give up polemic and to become a lonely pampheleeter, giving free way to pain and revolt. Then, in a synchronic approach, it is possible to characterize articles. Bloy criticises the society in a radicalist way and he gives his remarks a muthical reorientation. In the press liberated by the law in 1881, he develops a prophetical way of speaking, real act of speaking, and he favours hyperbole and image, reusing with force metaphors from religious literature in an apocalyptic vision of the world. Bloy denouces reporting and criticism as lies and propounds his own view of the news item and literature, as a revelation which restores the truth. This determinedly subjective attitude justifies many attacks, but it gives him access to strong texts like these of lautreamont. The ultimate unity of his texts resides in the writing which, using intertextuality, abolishes all the limits between bloy's texts, putting the holy scriptures into central focus, and bloy's texts as illumination

Abstract:
This essay considers the works of l. B. Alberti, written in latin and in "volgare". First, it looks at irony following the way of the "intertextualite". Moreover, the irony calls in question the omniscient certitudes of universal speechs (metaphysical speech and speech of the reason). Lastly, the irony, considered as dialogue, underlines the necessary and difficult confrontation of learnings, but it can also assume the dubious status, between dissimulation and cynicism, of a free speech that eludes social and political sanctions

Abstract:
Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved human-level performance in edge detection. However, there have not been enough studies on how to efficiently utilize the parameters of the neural network in edge detection applications. Therefore, the associated memory and energy costs remain high. In this paper, inspired by Depthwise Separable Convolutions and deformable convolutional networks (Deformable-ConvNet), we aim to address current inefficiencies in edge detection applications. To this end, we propose a new architecture, which we refer to as Lightweight Edge Detection Network (LEON ). The proposed approach is designed to integrate the advantages of the deformable unit and DepthWise Separable convolutions architecture to create a lightweight backbone employed for efficient feature extraction. As we show, we achieve state-of-the-art accuracy while significantly reducing the complexity by carefully choosing proper components for edge detection purposes. Our results on BSDS500 and NYUDv2 demonstrate that LEON outperforms the current lightweight edge detectors while requiring only 500k parameters. It is worth mentioning that we train the network from scratch without using pre- trained weights.
