Abstract:
In children with congenital heart disease, exercise testing is frequently performed to measure cardiorespiratory function and to assess abnormalities of cardiac rhythm. In paediatric cardiology, a reduced exercise capacity is common. This relates not only to the underlying heart defects, but often also to a low level of physical activity in daily life. Exercise training interventions to increase physical activity have been shown generally to be safe and beneficial in increasing exercise capacity. Therefore, except for some cases with medically imposed restrictions of intensive physical exercise, most patients are encouraged to be fully active during leisure time and to participate in all types of physical exercise at school.

Abstract:
Regular physical activity and fitness are key contributors to children’s health. It is important to understand sources of variation in phenotypes seen among children and adolescents. It is important to calculate the relative importance of genetic and environmental factors to observed individual differences. Heritability estimates of physical activity vary, depending on sample size and measurement instrument, but the overall importance of environmental factors seems to decrease in adolescence, whereas genetic effects become more prominent. Twin and family studies show that individual differences in maximal oxygen uptake, muscle strength, flexibility, and balance are affected by genetic factors. Some evidence is found for specific genes coding for physical activity and fitness, but children and adolescent studies are limited. Future research should prioritize these target groups as knowledge of the source of individual differences in physical activity and fitness at different time points can optimize the choice and timing of exercise intervention.

Abstract:
Children with cerebral palsy have major motor impairments that lead to reduced fitness and physical activity levels. Increased energy cost of walking in combination with reduced aerobic fitness induces high levels of physical strain that can lead to fatigue complaints and limited physical activity. To assess fitness, adapted laboratory and field exercise tests with good reliability and validity are available for both ambulant and wheelchair-using children with cerebral palsy. Children with cerebral palsy show increased sedentary time and low physical activity levels which relate to increased risks for health issues and loss of functional abilities at older age. Reducing sedentary time and increasing physical activity are important to counteract the increased health risks and loss of functional abilities. Fitness training of sufficient frequency, intensity, and duration is required to maintain and optimize long-term health and functional ability in children with cerebral palsy.

Abstract:
Making music is largely a serious leisure activity, and as with all serious leisure it takes place in a set of physical spaces, each with its own special meaning for the participant. That meaning has roots in the core activities conducted there. Stebbins has identified and explored seven types of spaces for serious leisure, six of which pertain to making serious music. They are conquered space, showcase space, resource space, sales space, helping space, virtual space, and tourist space. Each is discussed in detail sufficient to show how it can help explain the lifestyle of the modern amateur and professional musician. The main types of today’s musician are included in this analysis: jazz, rock, folk, and classical. Furthermore, the analysis proceeds from the core activities comprising the musical life, as these unfold in the different places where that life occurs.

Full text
Abstract:
This study considers how household composition influences the leisure time of men and women in South Africa, using the South African 2010 Time Use Survey. Studying leisure time is important since the allocation of time outside the market provides insights into market behaviour and physical and mental health. Household composition and leisure consumption are highly gendered, with women typically living in larger households and consuming less leisure than men. Regression analysis shows that leisure time allocations are highly dependent on who lives in the household and Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition analysis finds that gender differences in mean leisure time can be attributed to household members, affecting the leisure time of male and female respondents differently. Overall, the results are consistent with traditional gender roles within the household and highlight the lack of intra-household bargaining power for women, providing evidence of gender inequality. Lower leisure consumption for women may have negative implications for their productivity in terms of paid and unpaid work, and for their well-being.

Full text
Abstract:
Music has been a vital part of leisure activity across time and cultures. Contemporary commodification, commercialization, and consumerism, however, have created a chasm between conceptualizations of music making and numerous realities in our world. From a broad range of perspectives and approaches, this handbook explores avocational involvement with music (i.e., amateur, recreation) as an integral part of the human condition. The chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Music Making and Leisure present a myriad of ways for reconsidering—refocusing attention on—the rich, exciting, and emotionally charged ways in which people of all ages make time for making music through music learning and participation. The contexts discussed are broadly Western, including a diversity of voices from scholars across fields and disciplines, framing complex and multifaceted phenomena that may be helpfully, enlighteningly, and perhaps provocatively framed as music making and leisure. The book is structured in four parts: (I) Relationships to and with Music; (II) Involvement and Meaning; (III) Scenes, Spaces, and Places; and (IV) On the Diversity of Music Making and Leisure. This volume may be viewed as an attempt to reclaim music making and leisure as a serious concern for, among others, policy makers, scholars, and educators, who perhaps risk eliding some or even most of the ways in which music, so central to community and belonging, is integrated into the everyday lives of people. As such, this handbook looks beyond the obvious (of course music making is leisure!), asking readers to consider anew, “What might we see when we think of music making as leisure?”

Abstract:
Music constitutes a leisure activity for many people, either through listening or making music. For some, singing or playing constitutes a “serious” leisure activity while for others it is recreational. Similarly, listening for some is a hobby to which they devote considerable time and energy; for others it constitutes casual engagement. Despite these differences in forms and levels of engagement, music can have a considerable impact on subjective well-being. Well-being can be enhanced through listening while undertaking other tasks or through using music to change moods and emotions. However, music can cause distress when it is not to the liking of a listener and out of their control. Music can also play a role in the development and maintenance of identity through the kind of music listened to. Attending live music requires a greater level of interest but leads to similar benefits as active music making.

Veblen, Thomas, Kenneth Young, and Antony Orme. The Physical Geography of South America. Oxford University Press, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195313413.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Physical Geography of South America, the eighth volume in the Oxford Regional Environments series, presents an enduring statement on the physical and biogeographic conditions of this remarkable continent and their relationships to human activity. It fills a void in recent environmental literature by assembling a team of specialists from within and beyond South America in order to provide an integrated, cross-disciplinary body of knowledge about this mostly tropical continent, together with its high mountains and temperate southern cone. The authors systematically cover the main components of the South American environment - tectonism, climate, glaciation, natural landscape changes, rivers, vegetation, animals, and soils. The book then presents more specific treatments of regions with special attributes from the tropical forests of the Amazon basin to the Atacama Desert and Patagonian steppe, and from the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific coasts to the high Andes. Additionally, the continents environments are given a human face by evaluating the roles played by people over time, from pre-European and European colonial impacts to the effects of modern agriculture and urbanization, and from interactions with El Niño events to prognoses for the future environments of the continent.
