Abstract:
The purpose of the present study is to identify the factors that prevent or restrict the consumption of children`s leisure activities. In order to achieve the proposed objectives the Constraints to Leisure model developed by Crawford, Jackson and Godbey (1991) was used. To better understand how the Children s leisure decisions are taken and to identify its associated constraints mothers of several generations were chosen as subjects to participate in the field research. This kind of approach was selected as way a to identify different attitudes concerning the topic among the target. The data was collected through qualitative research methodology, using as tools focus groups and in-depth interviews. The results demonstrated that the constraints identified did not represent an issue for the mothers while engaging in leisure activities with their children. The intrapersonal barriers haven`t shown any relevance for the target. However, all mothers interviewed, regardless of their age, pointed out various interpersonal and structural barriers that can have a direct impact in their day-today lives, concerning both family and social aspects. The findings achieved in this study are relevant to help companies in the entertainment industry to build more accurate and efficient marketing strategies and also to help the government by providing information that could support decisions concerning investments and financing projects related to the kids entertainment.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to examine the leisure patterns of nonresident fathers while spending time with their child(ren), and to examine leisure constraints, leisure facilitators and nonresident fathers' satisfaction with family leisure activities. Four instruments were used to collect the data. Family leisure involvement was measured using the Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP), leisure constraints were measured using the Nonresident Father Leisure Constraint Scale (NFLCS), leisure facilitators were measured using the Nonresident Fathers' Leisure Facilitator Scale (NFLFS), and family leisure satisfaction was measured using the Family Leisure Satisfaction Scale (FLSS). The sample was nonresident fathers (n=129) from 36 states in the U.S. The data supported leisure constraints as a significant predictor of nonresident fathers' satisfaction with family leisure involvement, and their family leisure patterns. The data did not support, however, leisure facilitators as contributing to fathers' satisfaction with family leisure involvement or leisure patterns.

Davies, Andrea Jane. "Modelling goes to museums : experiential consumption, the Theory of Planned Behaviour and old and new museology." Thesis, Open University, 1999. http://oro.open.ac.uk/57947/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study adopts a two-stage structural equation modelling approach to demonstrate the nomological validity and utility of The Theory of Planned Behaviour to both predict and to explain the visiting intentions of middle-class residents to social history museums within the next 12 months. Working within an 'experience-based management approach' the present study provides both a descriptive contribution, in terms of identifying and providing significant improvements in the measurement of museum anticipated experiences and resource facilitators and constraints, as well as a predictive contribution, in terms of assessing the ability of The Theory of Planned Behaviour, and in particular, the relative contribution of attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control modelled with complex summated- interactive antecedents, to explain museum visiting intentions. Particular attention is given to the neglected role of belief evaluation in previous museum and heritage studies in describing the structure and structural dynamics of anticipated museum experience opportunities. Furthermore, attention is given to the potential contribution of perceived behavioural control, and an understanding of an individual's resource constraints, to the experience-based management approach. A two-stage development of a summated interactive- complex model is shown to overcome methodological and conceptual deficiencies which have been noted in previous expectancy-value attitude studies. In addition, this study examines the impact of the anticipated interpretative environment (physical designed space) on the museum experiential opportunities, control and social influences perceived by individuals, and compares the interpretative orientation of The New Museology (idea-based museum) to traditional mixes of museum interpretative media (object-based museum) in this respect. A qualitative-quantitative research design was employed. Thirty extended qualitative interviews formed the basis of the study by providing a 'real lived' understanding of common consumption experiences at heritage attractions, the resource problems associated with museum visits and the influences of social referents. Four hundred quantitative interviews with respondents from middle-class households formed the main focus of the study. Interviews were conducted using a systematic random sampling method applied in two spatially and demographically contrasting electoral wards of Edinburgh, Scotland. Across the spatial wards, respondents were randomly divided in two sub-groups (n=200). In each sub-group respondents were asked to evaluate a pictorial collage designed to capture the interpretative orientation of either the New Museology or traditional approach to museum interpretative mixes. The study highlights the superiority of interpretative media mixes common to The New Museology in raising the instrumental and experiential-process value individuals anticipate from this style of museum attraction. In doing so, the study finds support for the continued application of The Manning-Haas Hierarchy of Demand, where the importance of 'setting' in managing the consumption experiences of consumers is explicitly recognised. However, due to the 'egalitarian' objective of The New Museology, and the expected 'levelling' or increasing homogeneity observed between visitors and non-visitors to idea-based (The New Museology) in terms of anticipated experiential benefits and costs perceived in this museum environment, the present study finds the predictive ability of attitudes in The Theory of Planned Behaviour is reduced. For the idea-based museum, these findings raise some questions regarding the ability of the Manning-Haas Hierarchy, which is based on expectancy-value theory, to operate as a predictive modd of motivation as it was intended. However, the present study does support the use of the Manning-Haas Hierarchy as a descriptive heuristic for product development alone. Subjective norms were not found to increase our understanding of museum visiting intentions, while the explanatory ability of perceived behavioural control was limited to idea-based museum attractions. Further, based on the significant contribution for past expereince to explain visiting intentions to the idea based museum, the present study calls for further research to identify potential 'deficiencies' in explanatory variables needed to more fully understand the motivations of individuals to visit idea-based museums associated with The New Museology. Finally, the present study demonstrates the importance of both sub-group analysis in the Theory of Planned Behaviour in order to identify the moderating impact of past experience and gender on the relative impact of attitude, subjective norms and perceived behaviour control on museum visiting intentions.

The rights of women have been increasing by democracy and freedom, their consciousness of leisure demand behavior starts to be different from male value. In 21 century, the Taiwanese women are very outstanding in many fields. Under the pressures of taking care of family, earning money and surrounding by traditional male rights, women have a few opportunities to attend leisure activities. Therefore, this study discusses with the difficulties when women attend leisure activities. What do women receive the leisure benefit? How do women choose appropriate leisure activities to adjust their stress from usual? By realizing and improving the situations of attending leisure activities, it can help to promote women personal well-being. This study uses the convenient sampling from women visitors in Taipei city zoo. Result indicates the women leisure constraint has a significant impact on leisure coping and the leisure coping also has a significant impact on their well-being. By realizing the situations of women attend leisure activities, it not only offer the related associations with leisure demand and the self-consciousness uplift from women, but also soothe that women face on the interpersonal relationships between workplace and family responsibility.

Jackson, Crawford, and Godbey (1993) addressed that leisure participation was dependent not on the absence of constraints but on hierarchical negotiation through them. The purpose of the study was to explore the leisure participation and leisure constraints of people with spinal core injury. People with spinal core injury were mostly acquired by accidents or diseases. Many issues occurred during the transition from “free access before the injury ” to “multiple constraints after the injury” in leisure participation. Case study was used as the methodology in this study. The researcher expected to explore the valuable experience of how they coped and negotiated through the transition. The results indicated that the intrapersonal constraints of people with spinal core injury were personalities, interests, and self-limitations. Interpersonal constraints were few support from parents, lack of companies, and limitations of social intercourse. Structural constraints were inconveniences of surroundings and free accessibility in leisure fields. Furthermore, the results discovered that the case coped with different strategies when facing different types of leisure activities. For instance, the case would change the way of participation or compromise with the environment (nonparticipation).

In recent years, keeping pet dogs has been quite popular in Taiwan. This study explored pet dog owners’ leisure constraints under interactions between pet dog owners and their pet dogs in their daily life based on Crawford and Godbey’s (1987) model—“intrapersonal constraints,” “interpersonal constraints,” and “structural constraints.” The main instrument was questionnaire self-designed based on related literature review in this study. The total 400 valid questionnaires were collected through surveying specific internet communities and on-site tourist teams for pet dog owners. The main findings were that the pet dog owners’ attitudes, living environment, sources of pet dogs, and motivation significantly affect the owners’ leisure constraints. In addition, the pet dog’s size also significantly impact pet dog owners’ leisure constraints. However, the pet dog’s aggression, personality, and the number of keeping for an owner were not significantly different on the pet dog owners’ leisure constraints. Taiwanese pet dog industry and related organizations can use these findings for proposing related policies or strategies. Also, the findings can give a parsimonious suggestion for future studies.

Focus on appropriate leisure activities get good way to relax and relieve stress, parents participate to children’s leisure activities enhance family’s physical and mental health through cohesion of family centripetal force through establishment parent-child’s good relationship. Many studies confirm leisure participation will positively directly affect leisure satisfaction, while the higher motivation of leisure constraints the higher of perceived leisure satisfaction, therefor when higher of the leisure hinder increase reduce their feelings of leisure satisfaction. In this thesis, study of “drone parents” (between 1981 and 1990’s Y generation parents) explore leisure participation, leisure motivation, leisure constraints on leisure satisfaction, questionnaires were conducted using stratified random sampling. Total of 330 were issued, the recovery of effective questionnaires 306, the effective sample recovery rate of 93%. Analysis of the results found: drone parentes leisure participation at lower level, leisure constraints at median level, leisure motivation and leisure satisfaction at upper level. Leisure participation, leisure motivation and leisure constraints have a significant impact for leisure satisfaction due three hinder potentials. Leisure participation, leisure motivation become positive forecast for leisure satisfaction, through negative forecast for leisure constraints. Leisure motivation is the main key to affect leisure satisfaction. Drone parents' leisurely participation most in social activities with friends and relatives, physical fitness least degree of leisure participation. Relaxation is the main leisure motivation for drone parents. The main obstacle to reducing the participation of drone parents in recreational participation is to take care of their children.

The purpose of this study was to identify the demographic distribution, the current situations of leisure motivations, leisure benefits, and leisure constraints, as well as the differences and correlations among leisure motivations, leisure benefits, and leisure constraints of divers in Ken-ting. The research targets are divers who dive in Ken-ting diving areas. Purposive sampling was adopted to administrate questionnaires. 450 questionnaires were handed out and 434 valid ones were retrieved with validation rate of 96%. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, factor analysis, t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson's product-moment correlation, and multiple stepwise regression analysis. The results are as follows: 1.There are 396 male divers in Ken-ting which account for 68.20% of the research participants; 215 divers are between age of 30 to 39 (79.50%); there are 71 divers living in Kaohsiung area (16.40%) and 66 living in Chiayi City (15.20%); 258 divers are married (59.40%); 261 diver possess college or higher degree (60.10%); 172 divers have participated in diving activities from one year to five years (39.60%) ; 196 divers participate in diving activities twice a month (46.20%) ; and there are 430 divers willing to volunteer in ocean cleaning activities (99.10%). 2.Competence-mastery was scored the highest in leisure motivations which suggested diving might demonstrate the abilities of surpassing the self-limitation and obtain the sense of self-achievements. Physical benefit was scored the highest in leisure benefits which suggested that diving could improve the Cardio-respiratory capacity and fitness, eliminate fatigue, as well as maintain the physical well-being so that participants could feel energetic. Constructive constraints was scored the highest in leisure constraints which suggested weather, traffic, facilities, locations, and cost of equipment would have effects on the diving participation of divers in Ken-ting.. 3.Leisure motivations among divers from various backgrounds are significantly different. The more frequent and the longer participation of diving are, the higher leisure motivations would be. 4.The regression analysis showed, there was moderate correlation between the leisure motivations and leisure benefits of divers in Ken-ting. The results also indicated, competence-mastery and escape-stress in leisure motivations had better predictability on leisure benefits. The higher competence-mastery and escape- stress, the better leisure benefits would be. The conclusions are as follows: Divers view diving as one of the indispensable leisure activities and consider diving as the opportunity to make new friends with common interests. Divers can also obtain the sense of self-achievements from diving and release their stress, improve physiology, and enhance physical strength. 99.10% divers are willing to volunteer in ocean protection activities therefore the government should advocate diving activities in Ken-ting diving areas enthusiastically which would not only benefit the health of divers but also contribute to the marine environment protection. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the benefits and constraint of leisure behavior. Purposive sampling was operated, 385 employees in the Taiwan Yuen Foong Yu Packaging INC are taken. Leisure Behavior Mmeasurement Ttable (Jhu,2001) , Leisure Constraints Measurement Table, Leisure Benefit Measurement Table (Jhong,1998), were three instructments., effective return rate for the questionnaires was 73%. The results were analyzed by Chi-Square, one-way MANOVA, Duncan Post Hoc and canonical correlation analysi and reveled these samples spend different amount of time in doing leisure activities. In general, they spend more time in leisure activities then employees in high-tech industries. Money spent in sport activities were less than spent in other recreational activities. Monthly expense for the majority of the samples from 1,000 to 4,000 New Taiwan dollars with their families members. Significant differences were found in the factor of gender, education level, work shift, age, position, and income level were statistically different in response to the leisure behavior. Factors of work shift, position and income level were statistically different in response to the leisure benefits. Factors of education level, work shift, position and income level were statistically different in response to the leisure constraints. Available time and expense of doing leisure activities predicts the benefits at 3.3%, where the leisure time is prior to the leisure expense. We can also use leisure time and expense to predict the leisure constraints at 2.6%, where the leisure time is prior to the leisure expense. Base on the previous discovery, this study proposes several suggestions.Such as, suggesting the authority to design appropriate programs according to the characteristic of population variance; to magnify the challenge and recreation of activities; to assist and establish correlated corporations; to associate with the activities held by community groups, and attract sponsors to support equipments or recreational coupons, to the activity authorities, the employers, and the sequential studies, in order to promote the participation of leisure activities of the employees, to eliminate the constraints of taking leisure activities and to improve the benefits of leisure activities.

The purpose of the research is discussing poliomyelitis patients’ leisure participation, leisure constraints, and leisure demands. Moreover, the differences and correlations of such three factors were analyzed for poliomyelitis patients in different contexts. Questionnaire investigation was adopted in this research to develop the instrument, Questionnaire of Poliomyelitis Patients’ Leisure Participation, Leisure Constraints, and Leisure Demands and sample Taiwanese poliomyelitis patients. 289 of 300 sent questionnaires returned and 268 questionnaires were valid. There are several statistical methods used including descriptive statistics (times, percentages, means, and standard deviation), Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance by rank, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's product-moment correlation. In summary, the research results are: 1.The participants in average took part in leisure activities for 47.19 hours per week. They spent more hours on certain leisure activities such as entertainment, information acquirement, emotional interaction, sport, and art. Overall, outside activities occupied their leisure time for 0.48 day per month. 2.The questionnaire of leisure constraints shows that only in the factor of environmental resources/support which was deemed as a cause of leisure constraints by the participants, they scored it over 3. As for the factors of individual, interaction with others, and ecological environment, the scores dispersed highly that presents the degree of leisure depended on the participants’ self-consciousness. Furthermore, the score of the factor of others’ attitude was 2.49 that appears most participants did not take it as an important cause of leisure constraints. 3.In the questionnaire of leisure demands, all factors were scored over 3. Among the factors, the sum score of leisure demands and the factors of leisure projects, barrier-free facilities, and advance and system construction were even scored over 4. It shows that such leisure demands of the participants were not satisfied still. 4.The male participants spent more hours on leisure and got lower scores on leisure constraints than the female participants. Additionally, there was no significant difference in the hours of weekly leisure participation among the participants with different ages, jobs, educational levels, monthly family incomes, and marital statuses. However, the significant difference showed in the hours of diverse leisure activities. 5.There was no significant difference in the sum score of leisure constraints among the participants with different educational levels, monthly family incomes, and marital statuses. However, the significant difference appeared in the scores of diverse leisure constraints. 6.There was a significant difference in the scores of diverse leisure demands among the participants with different jobs, educational levels, monthly family incomes, marital statuses, degree of disability, and utilization of assistive technology. 7.In the questionnaire of leisure constraints and leisure demands, the sum score of leisure constraints was significantly correlated with the score of demand for interpersonal support; the score of interaction with others was significantly correlated with the scores of demand for interpersonal support and demand for professional leisure service; the score of the constraint of environmental resources/support was significantly correlated with the sum score of leisure demands and the score of leisure projects. As can be seen from the results, there was certainly a correlation between the participants’ leisure constraints and self-conscious leisure demands. According to the research results, some suggestions are provided to poliomyelitis patients, government agencies, civil societies, and future researchers and for their reference.

Abstract The Leisure Constraints Scale was constructed by Raymore 、 Godbey 、 Crawford & Von Eye in 1993。They are including intrapersonal 、interpersonal 、structural three constraints factor. The purpose of the study was to examine the construct validity to use exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factory analysis. One thousand students selected from twenty-two colleges in north Taiwan. The available subjects are 971.SPSS 8.0 was used to exploratory factor analysis and LISREL 8.3 was used to confirmatory factory analysis. The results showed that hypothetical model of Chinese-version of Leisure Constraints Scale fitted the data. It is a valid and reliable instrument. Through this study, this scale can be a standard instrument to measure leisure constraints. In addition, this paper also provides the methods and procedures for conducting the confirmatory factory factor analysis test the construct validity of Leisure Constraints Scale.

Leisure refers to the activitiy that an individual can chose vulantarily. Through these leisure activities, the participants can have relaxation and satisfaction. However, leisure constraints may appear when individuals pursuit leisure activities. There are internal, interpersonal, constuctual constrains. The participants have to overcome internally, then interpersonally, finally constuctually. The participants need to adopt coping strategies to reduce constraints in order to successfully take part leisure activities. These strategies include time management, financial management, skill improvement, relationship management and others. This study aims to explore leisure constraints and its rlated coping strategies of runners in order to provide recommendation to organizers of running events. A purposeful sampling method was used to collect data. Twenty-one in-depth interviews and focus group of 19 subjects were conducted. This study found that runners have internal, interpersonal, constuctual leisure constrains. They utilized coping strategies to overcome these constraints. These coping strategies include time management, financial management, skill improvement, relationship management and others. When runners have internal contrants, they use time management, skill improvement, and determination to overcome. When they have interpersonal constraints, they use relationship management to overcome. When they have constuctual constraints, whey use all the above strategies. The results of this study reveal leisure constraints and coping strategies of runners. The event organizers can assist the runners to overcome their constraints in order to enjoy this activity.

Abstract Many leisure constraints have been studied in terms of participation in leisure and different groups of people. However few of previous research have investigated that in male homosexuals. This study aims to investigate the leisure constraints and leisure style that male homosexuals have when they participate in activities. Data are recruited from a questionnaire with 259 effective samples by snowball sampling and interviews with 12 male homosexuals and analyzed with respect to levels of the leisure constraint with different social-economic status and to the leisure styles male homosexuals have. The statistical test of one-way ANOVA was conducted and the results revealed that external constraints are major factors in male homosexuals’ participation in leisure activity. It was also shown that to different age groups, the factor of ‘openness of the society’ is the higher-level constraint and that to seven occupation groups, the factors of ‘lack of good customer service,’ ‘lack of technical advisors,’ ‘overcharge of the activities’ and ‘No sufficient fields’ are significant as well. Moreover, ‘the weather when activities carried out’ has the highest level of effect to different education groups. In terms of different location groups the factors of ‘pressure of work,’ ‘main stream of people’s preference’ and ‘No sufficient fields’ are significantly different; the former as an intrapersonal factor while the latter two as external ones. Furthermore, in different groups of spending per month, ‘lack of sanitation of the environment’ is the highest level constraint in groups of ‘less than 500 dollars,’ ‘1000 to 1500 dollars’ and ‘more than 1500’ while the group of ‘500 to 1000 dollars’ takes ‘overcharge of the activities’ as the main constraint. Five types of leisure styles are found by normative analysis: static type, music type, sport type, night club type and outdoor activity type. Key Word:Gay、Leisure Constraints、Leisure Styles

The purpose of this study was to discuss the distribution of demographic variables for seniors who go to the sports centers in Taipei City to swim; the current situations, difference, and correlation of leisure involvement, leisure benefits, and leisure constraints of swimming for seniors would also be discussed. Seniors who go swimming in sports centers in Taipei City were the study subjects. Questionnaire investigation was adopted, and convenient sampling was used for investigation; 404 copies of questionnaires were distributed and 395 copies of questionnaires were valid, so the effective received rate was 97%. The data analytical methods that this study used included descriptive statistical analysis, factor analysis, independent-sample t test, one way ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression, and the study result and conclusions were as follows: 1. The regression analysis showed significant correlation between senior swimmers’ leisure involvement and leisure benefits, and the result of regression analysis indicated that this regression model had reached significant level, showing that centralization provided higher anticipation towards leisure benefits. When senior swimmers go to swim, such psychological states as feeling more excited, involved, important, happy, interested, and fond of would allow the senior swimmers to obtain higher leisure benefits. Therefore, the higher the leisure involvement, the higher the leisure benefits would be. 2. There were 278 female senior swimmers, which accounted for 70.4% (the majority) of total study subjects; 164 study subjects (41.5%) are 70 to 74 years old; 46 study subjects (11.6%) live in Daan District and 46 study subjects (11.6%) live in Nangang District; 316 study subjects (80%) are married; 196 study subjects (49.6%) graduated from junior high schools or below; 123 study subjects (31.1%) go swimming for less than one year; 75 study subjects (19%) go swimming thrice a week. 3. The leisure involvement of different demographic variables showed significant difference, the longer the participation years and the more the participation, the higher recognition the leisure involvement would be. 4. The overall average score of “attractiveness” was the highest, the importance, happiness, interest, likeness, and relaxation of swimming for seniors were recognized by the senior swimmers the most. The overall average score of “physiological benefit” was the highest, swimming could improve senior swimmers’ cardiorespiratory endurance, eliminate tiredness, make the senior swimmers feel energetic, build up their strength, and keep them healthy. The overall average score of “structural constraint” was the highest, crowd swimming pool, transportation, facilities, attendant’s attitude, and charge would influence the participation of senior swimmers. 5. Swimming could improve physiological benefit, psychological benefit, and make friends so as to promote leisure benefit. Relevant governmental organs should promote swimming in sports centers with great exertion for seniors who live in Taipei City, which was contributive to seniors’ health.

Since 1994, many women from Southeast Asian countries immigrated to Taiwan through marriages. Once married and moved to Taiwan, these foreign brides faced an unfamiliar environment, different culture, language, low economic status, and discriminations of local residences. How to reduce their constant stresses and to cope with the new life? Did they participate in leisure activities? However, it is essential to regard foreign brides’ leisure constraints in this issue. This study mainly investigated the leisure constraints effect of foreign brides on their leisure participation. Moreover, this study can provide the results to related bureaus as a reference to promote foreign brides’ leisure paryicipation. The object of this study is Taiwanese foreign brides from developing country, such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, etc. There are Four hundred and twenty (420) questionnaires were distributed to foreign brides in southern Taiwan through purposive sampling. Three hundred and ninety-two (392) valid questionnaires were collected. A return rate of 93.3%. The data were analyzed through Descriptive analysis, reliability analysis, factor analysis, Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA with Scheffe’s post-hoc comparison, and regression analyses. Results revealed that: 1. Most leisure activities foreign brides participated in were steady-state type. 2. Interpersonal communication and relationships were the major constraints that hindered foreign brides to participate in leisure activities. 3. Certain leisure constraints significantly prohibited foreign brides to participate in leisure activities.

The study aims to investigate the relationship between leisure constraints and leisure participation and recruits beauticians in Yunlin County as participants to explore whether beauticians’ characteristics may vary in leisure constraints and leisure participation and to investigate the relationship between two factors. A purposive sampling was conducted. The research instruments are Leisure Constraints Scale and Leisure Attitude Scale, utilizing a 5-point Likert scale. 300 copies of questionnaires were sent out, and 277 valid copies were returned. The findings of the study show that (1) beauticians’ characteristics have a significant difference on leisure constraints and leisure participation, (2) the relationship between beauticians’ leisure constraints and leisure participation is significantly relevant, and (3) beauticians’ leisure constraints have significant influence on their leisure participation. Hence, the study suggests that the government, beauty salons, or relevant units should set up multipurpose spaces or establish multipurpose parks based on the commute distance; therefore, beauticians may have sufficient indoor and outdoor spaces for leisure activities, and leisure constraints caused by inconvenient locations, insufficient leisure facilities, and weather conditions may not limit participation in desired leisure activities. Besides, most beauticians are females and they engage in sedentary behaviors, so physical activities for group, such as yoga or aerobics, can be widely promoted to encourage them to join more social activities. By participating different types of leisure activities, they can expand their interests and experience different types of roles and behaviors in their lives.

Abstract:
Despite a substantial volume of research on identity in the social and behavioral sciences, identity theory has existed on the margins of the leisure literature and contributed to the understanding of leisure behavior only in occasional illustrative references. The purpose of this dissertation was to incorporate identity theory in the understanding individuals? leisure behavior within the context of recreational golf. Three independent studies were conducted to address different yet interconnected research topics. The first study identified conceptual links between identity theory and the concepts of enduring involvement, commitment, loyalty, specialization and serious leisure. Guided by identity theory, it was suggested that identity-confirmation is the underlying reason why individuals become involved in a leisure activity and develop a commitment and side bets. Further, this study proposed that self-verification processes underline why individuals value certain lines of action (i.e., enduring involvement, commitment, and specialization) and, in turn, become specialists, amateurs or loyal clients. The second study investigated the relationship between gender identity, leisure identity and leisure participation. Using data collected from recreational golfers, results showed that both leisure identity and masculine identity positively influenced respondents? participation in recreational golf. Furthermore, the findings illustrated that masculine identity plays a formative role in the development of a leisure identity, which in turn is an antecedent of leisure behavior. The third study adopted the concept of identity conflict/facilitation to provide a theoretical framework for understanding the experience of constraints to leisure and constraint negotiation. Using data collected from recreational golfers, analyses provided evidence in support of the contention that identity conflict/facilitation is an antecedent of perceived constraints and negotiation efforts. The findings also illustrated that the ability to negotiate constraints depends on the compatibility between the leisure identity and the other identities an individual holds. Finally, a summary and synthesis of the findings and agenda for future research were discussed.

In the advanced science and technology era, people are used to taking part in leisure activities, after they leave the office in order to release their work pressure. People gradually put attention to leisure activities day by day. People hope that they can not only release their pressure to maintain their health, but also study new knowledge and technology in order to have opportunity to express themselves. This study is to investigate the relationships among serious leisure, leisure constraints, and leisure satisfaction. Besides, moderating effect of leisure constraints on the relationship between serious leisure and leisure satisfaction is examined in this study. A convenience sample of respondents was chosen from participants of line dance activities in Taipei and New Taipei cities. A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed, and 287 valid questionnaires were returned. These questionnaires were analyzed by SPSS program. Descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, validity analysis, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were employed in this study. The results showed that serious leisure has a significant positive effect on leisure satisfaction and leisure constraints have significant negative effects on leisure satisfaction. Moreover, the results also showed that leisure constraints have not any mediating effect on the relationship between serious leisure and leisure satisfaction. The results may provide some useful information for the managers of leisure groups to enhance leisure satisfaction of participators through the rising of serious leisure and decreasing of leisure constraints.

The purpose of this study is to understand the reasons behind Christians not participating in church assembly by utilizing leisure constraints theory. Based on the qualitative method, seventeen experienced Christians were interviewed. By judging from the data collected which were rearranged and induced, indicates that the barriers to Christian assembly includes intrapersonal constraints (mental and physical obstacles, beliefs and cultural factors, less subjective evaluation), interpersonal constraints (parents’ restrictions, relatives’ restrictions, peers’ pressure, difficulty of getting along with other Christians, ancestral’ cultural barriers) and structural constraints. Concerning the strategies to the barriers, it includes intensifying beliefs, seeking external assistance, changing themselves or others and the environment as well as internalizing the value of belief. Of all the constraint factors above, the most general barriers are the mental and physical state in the intrapersonal constraints as well as parents’ restrictions in the interpersonal constraints. Whereas, for the strategies to the barriers could be directed against different barriers, and to be the reference to other Christians who would encounter Christianity activities participation issues. The result of this study clarifies the barriers to Christians’ participation in church activities, and figures out the solution to those barriers as well as their enduring participation. It could not only help Christians to participate church assembly, but also improve participation willingness, management of assembly policies and remove the constraint factors of Christian assembly. Ultimately, this study could be one of the helpful resources for other similar researchers.

With the raising trend of recreational activities, numerous studies have been done on areas regarding leisure behaviors. However, such studies rarely focus on people on the off-shore islands. Yet leisure activities are essential for personal well-beings and its importance can not be under-valued. This study mainly concentrates on understanding the relationships between the following 5 variables:the attributes of the Kinmen people, their leisure behavior, their leisure constraint, their leisure motivation and their leisure satisfaction in the Kinmen area. This article first introduces theories about leisure behaviors by referencing papers from domestic and abroad. Next, we collect 600 copies of valid surveys proportionally done based on population size of villages and towns at Kinmen. Following, we use five statistic methods, “description analysis”, “Chi-Square Tests” “T-test analysis”, “One-way ANOVA analysis” and “Factor analysis”, to analyze those data. Finally, it concludes that because of such little room, there are constraints on Kinmen people’s leisure behavior. Local and central government agencies should provide budgets for recreational facilities to improve the leisure conditions of the inhabitants. Hopefully, this study can serve as a useful resource for relevant government agencies and for researchers participating in the study of leisure behaviors.

Study of Migrant Filipino Labors’ Leisure Activity Types and Leisure Constraints in Taipei Abstract A handbook, “how to administer migrant labors”, edited by Taiwan Council of labor affairs which mentioned that most employers of migrant labors in Taiwan often cared about the leisure and consumption behavior of their workers. It also mentioned the arrangement of leisure activities for migrant labors in Taipei was cumbersome for employers because migrant labors had different culture background and came from different countries. Thus the researcher wanted to realize what types of leisure activities the migrant labors in Taiwan liked to do and the what kinds of leisure constraints they met in Taiwan. The researcher chose Filipino labors in Taipei to conduct the questionnaire survey. The sample of the survey was chose purposively in front of St. Christopher church and inside the Jen-Ai hospital in Taipei. There were 360 questionnaires being delivered out, and 276 of them were returned and valid. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t test, and one-way ANOVA. The result revealed that Taipei Filipino labors most often participated in the leisure activity of the social intercourse; hence the social intercourse was their favorite leisure activity. Learning activities, following social intercourse, were the second leisure activity type which they loved to join; moreover, except amusement activities, there were significant differences between the real participation level and expected (interested) participation level in five left activity types, this might unveil that migrant Filipino labors in Taipei needed more holidays to do leisure activities. This survey also found that the factors which most influenced migrant Filipino labors in Taipei were the leisure activity was not linked with their religion belief, lacking of the information of the leisure activity, money, and time as well as the facilities for leisure were not convenient enough. Consequently, in order to avoid constraints as the result mentioned above, religious celebration will be the most suitable activity for government or intermediate companies to hold in the future. The research of leisure constraints focused on demographic background in past years. Little research to date has attempted to the participants of particular activities. Serious leisure is a new issue in leisure field, and there are serious leisure participants in each activity. The study is an explored research:a case of golf activity. The purpose of the study was to investigate the differences in leisure constraints, serious leisure between serious leisure participants and non-serious leisure participants. The relationships of leisure constraints and serious leisure were also analyzed. On-site structured questionnaires and the purposive sampling were used to gather data. In the study, 550 questionnaires were distributed to partaking parties in Xing-nong golf course. 276 forms were obtained. Since 56 of them are imperfect questionnaires, there were 224 usable forms. The finding showed that:(1)There is significant difference on leisure constraints of t-test between serious leisure participants and non-serious leisure participants. The serious leisure participants experienced constraints lower than non-serious leisure participants especially in intrapersonal constraints and interpersonal constraints.(2)There is significant difference on serious leisure of t-test between serious leisure participants and non-serious leisure participants. The serious leisure participants experienced constraints higher than non-serious leisure ones.(3)Canonical correlation analysis was utilized to inspect the relationships between serious leisure and leisure constraints. The first three accounted for the significant standards. There are three significant linear relationships between serious leisure and leisure constraints. The following suggestions are put forward according to the result of the research:(1)Practical managements. The results of the structure constraints provide ideas of managing and improving golf course to managers. The marketing segmentation plans are based on the data of serious leisure participants which need golf course environments to target markets and map out suitable marketing programs.(2)Follow-up studies. The researchers can choose other activities with distinct types or skills to analyze the serious leisure participants and increase the number of consulting professionals to make sure the gauge of serious leisure at the same time. The researchers can aim at whether the causal relationships are between serious leisure and leisure constraints to generalize complete research results. 【Keywords】serious leisure, leisure constraints, golf activity

The main objectives of this research are to discuss the leisure effects upon the users of motor boat in Taiwan. The discussions emphasize on the developments of leisure involvement in exploring the leisure constraints and benefits from the users and business holders of the motor boat. Explored by both qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys, the research identifies several major concerns of the development of motor boat in Taiwan’s leisure and recreational field. After conducting 450 research questionnaires with the motor boat users, the research results indicate that most factors of leisure constraints such as governmental regulations, motor boat infrastructures, and motor boat operating information are directly related to leisure involvements. Interviews with motor boat business holders provide valuable suggestions for this research. The recommendations are chiefly dedicated to the socio-governmental management and to the individual perspectives of leisure benefits. Eventually, this research underpins important views and thoughts for the growth and advancement of the motor boat activity. Thus, it delivers not only the identification of leisure benefits, it offers but also an in-depth investigation for examining the relationships between leisure constraints and leisure involvement, in particular for the business of motor boat in Taiwan. For the research results, according to both qualitative and quantative analyses, the researcher find that the motor boat can: 1. enhance users’ recognition of leisure benefits among physical, psychological, and educational categories; 2. decline users’ preference by inconvient external factors for activity participation; and 3. advance users’ motivation by demonstrating his/her social identiy.

Nowadays, family camping is one of the most popular family leisure activities in Taiwan. To make recommendations on design, plan and marketing regarding future camping activities for related institutions, it is worthwhile to identify whether husbands and wives share consistent opinions regarding leisure benefits and constraints of family leisure activities, and what their differences in opinions are. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand the current situation of family camping, leisure benefits and constraints for family campers, and whether husbands and wives have different opinions for leisure benefits and constraints of family camping. 204 couples of family campers were filled the questionnaires and paired t-test was applied to identify if there was any statistical difference between the husbands and wives. The results show that both husbands and wives hold a positive attitude towards leisure benefits of family camping while husbands are significantly more agreement than their wives toward the statement that camping relieves the pressure of life. For the leisure constraints of family camping, couples generally identify no personal or family constraints. However, they show higher identification of structural constraints for camping activities, such as the weather, equipment, and camping environment. The differences between husbands and wives in their identification of leisure constraints for family camping are significant only in the two items of inaccessibility of camp information and inconvenient bathroom and toilet facilities. Based on the results of this study, although family campers generally recognize the leisure benefits of family camping, the industry and government can plan to reduce the leisure constraints of family camping in the future.
