Abstract:
Abstract. Based on wind tunnel measurements at the CSTB (Jules Verne) facility in Nantes and based on field observations at the SLF experimental site Versuchsfeld Weissfluhjoch, two acoustic wind drift sensors are evaluated against different mechanical snow traps and one optical snow particle counter. The focus of the work is the suitability of the acoustic sensors for applications such as avalanche warning and research. Although the acoustic sensors have not yet reached the accuracy required for typical research applications, they can, however, be useful for snow drift monitoring to help avalanche forecasters. The main problem of the acoustic sensors is a difficult calibration that has to take into account the variable snow properties. Further difficulties arise from snow fall and high wind speeds. However, the sensor is robust and can be operated remotely under harsh conditions. It is emphasized that due to the lack of an accurate reference method for snow drift measurements, all sensors play a role in improving and evaluating snow drift models. Finally, current operational snow drift models and snow drift sensors are compared with respect to their usefulness as an aid for avalanche warning. While drift sensors always make a point measurement, the models are able to give a more representative drift index that is valid for a larger area. Therefore, models have the potential to replace difficult observations such as snow drift in operational applications. Current models on snow drift are either only applicable in flat terrain, are still too complex for an operational application (Lehning et al., 2000b), or offer only limited information on snow drift, such as the SNOWPACK drift index (Lehning et al., 2000a). On the other hand, snow drift is also difficult to measure. While mechanical traps (Mellor 1960; Budd et al., 1966) are probably still the best reference, they require more or less continuous manual operation and are thus not suitable for remote locations or long-term monitoring. Optical sensors (Schmidt, 1977; Brown and Pomeroy, 1989; Sato and Kimura, 1993) have been very successful for research applications, but suffer from the fact that they give a single flux value at one specific height. In addition, they have not been used, to our knowledge, for long-term monitoring applications or at remote sites. New developments of acoustic sensors have taken place recently (Chritin et al., 1999; Font et al., 1998). Jaedicke (2001) gives examples of possible applications of acoustic snow drift sensors. He emphasizes the advantages of acoustic sensors for snow drift monitoring at remote locations, but could not present any evaluation of the accuracy of the measurements. We present a complete evaluation of the new acoustic sensors for snow drift and discuss their applications for research or avalanche warning. We compare the suitability of sensors for operational applications.

Abstract:
Abstract Neighborhoods are known to shape well-being across the life course, particularly in later life. Yet, neighborhoods remain an underutilized focus in public health interventions due to lack of measurement specificity and understanding of mechanisms across well-being outcomes. This symposium brings together four complementary papers from social work, sociology, and psychology that incorporate multiple (objective and/or subjective) indicators of neighborhood context from national to locally-based samples to predict diverse forms of well-being. Lehning and colleagues use objective (Census) indicators of neighborhoods from the National Neighborhood Change Database, combined with data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (N=7,197), to explore links between changing neighborhood age composition and older adults’ self-rated health.. Sharifian and colleagues examine the associations between perceived neighborhood characteristics (social cohesion, physical disorder) and cognition directly and indirectly through mental health pathways (depressive symptoms, anxiety) using the Health and Retirement Study. Webster and colleagues examine links between objective (Census) and subjective (perceived safety) neighborhood indicators and social well-being using data from the Detroit-based Social Relations Study (N=259). Mair et al. combine objective neighborhood-level data with individual-level data from the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span dataset to examine direct and indirect effects of neighborhood context on obesity risk among N=2,707 middle-age and older Baltimore City residents. These papers will be discussed by Malcolm Cutchin, a health geographer and social gerontologist, who will provide an interdisciplinary reflection of neighborhood measurement and use neighborhoods as a platform to promote diverse forms of well-being in later life.

Abstract:
AbstractLarge variations in values of the diffusion coefficient for snow have been reported in the literature. Some authors (Yosida and others, 1955; Yen, 1963) have claimed that the diffusion coefficient does not vary with density. Others (Colbeck, 1993; Arons and Colbeck, 1995) have reported that the diffusion coefficient decreases with an increase in mean pore length, and that it does not necessarily change with snow density. This appears to be inconsistent, since density and mean pore space are related for a given mass of snow and therefore these parameters cannot be taken independently. On the other hand, experimental results show an increase in grain-growth rate with decrease in snow density. In this paper, particulate and continuum approaches have been used to obtain the mass diffusivity Treating snow as a particulate medium, the one-dimensional model of grain growth from Satyawali (1994) has been extended. This approach has been integrated into the SNOWPACK model (Lehning and others, 1998) that predicts the rate of grain growth for a dry snowpack subject to a temperature gradient. The expression for effective vapor-diffusion coefficient resulting from the present study isTo test this equation, several experiments similar to those of Yosida and others (1955) have been conducted assuming that snow is a continuous medium. In this approach Fick’s law of diffusion is used to obtain direct experimental determinations of the diffusion coefficient. The experimental results have been compared to estimates of D∊ calculated from the above equation and it is shown that results are inconsistent at the upper and lower sample boundaries. This paper describes the features of snow metamorphism, in particular grain growth driven by an applied temperature gradient, and discusses the mass-diffusivity coefficient derived from the particle theory of Colbeck (1993).

Abstract:
Abstract. Canopy emissions of volatile hydrocarbons such as isoprene and monoterpenes play an important role in air chemistry. They depend on various environmental conditions, are highly species-specific and are expected to be affected by global change. In order to estimate future emissions of these isoprenoids, differently complex models are available. However, seasonal dynamics driven by phenology, enzymatic activity, or drought stress strongly modify annual ecosystem emissions. Although these impacts depend themselves on environmental conditions, they have yet received little attention in mechanistic modelling. In this paper we propose the application of a mechanistic method for considering the seasonal dynamics of emission potential using the "Seasonal Isoprenoid synthase Model" (Lehning et al., 2001). We test this approach with three different models (GUENTHER, Guenther et al., 1993; NIINEMETS, Niinemets et al., 2002a; BIM2, Grote et al., 2006) that are developed for simulating light-dependent monoterpene emission. We also suggest specific drought stress representations for each model. Additionally, the proposed model developments are compared with the approach realized in the MEGAN (Guenther et al., 2006) emission model. Models are applied to a Mediterranean Holm oak (Quercus ilex) site with measured weather data. The simulation results demonstrate that the consideration of a dynamic emission potential has a strong effect on annual monoterpene emission estimates. The investigated models, however, show different sensitivities to the procedure for determining this seasonality impact. Considering a drought impact reduced the differences between the applied models and decreased emissions at the investigation site by approximately 33% on average over a 10 year period. Although this overall reduction was similar in all models, the sensitivity to weather conditions in specific years was different. We conclude that the proposed implementations of drought stress and internal seasonality strongly reduce estimated emissions and indicate the measurements that are needed to further evaluate the models.

Abstract:

Abstract:
