Abstract:
Abstract. Based on wind tunnel measurements at the CSTB (Jules Verne) facility in Nantes and based on field observations at the SLF experimental site Versuchsfeld Weissfluhjoch, two acoustic wind drift sensors are evaluated against different mechanical snow traps and one optical snow particle counter. The focus of the work is the suitability of the acoustic sensors for applications such as avalanche warning and research. Although the acoustic sensors have not yet reached the accuracy required for typical research applications, they can, however, be useful for snow drift monitoring to help avalanche forecasters. The main problem of the acoustic sensors is a difficult calibration that has to take into account the variable snow properties. Further difficulties arise from snow fall and high wind speeds. However, the sensor is robust and can be operated remotely under harsh conditions. It is emphasized that due to the lack of an accurate reference method for snow drift measurements, all sensors play a role in improving and evaluating snow drift models. Finally, current operational snow drift models and snow drift sensors are compared with respect to their usefulness as an aid for avalanche warning. While drift sensors always make a point measurement, the models are able to give a more representative drift index that is valid for a larger area. Therefore, models have the potential to replace difficult observations such as snow drift in operational applications. Current models on snow drift are either only applicable in flat terrain, are still too complex for an operational application (Lehning et al., 2000b), or offer only limited information on snow drift, such as the SNOWPACK drift index (Lehning et al., 2000a). On the other hand, snow drift is also difficult to measure. While mechanical traps (Mellor 1960; Budd et al., 1966) are probably still the best reference, they require more or less continuous manual operation and are thus not suitable for remote locations or long-term monitoring. Optical sensors (Schmidt, 1977; Brown and Pomeroy, 1989; Sato and Kimura, 1993) have been very successful for research applications, but suffer from the fact that they give a single flux value at one specific height. In addition, they have not been used, to our knowledge, for long-term monitoring applications or at remote sites. New developments of acoustic sensors have taken place recently (Chritin et al., 1999; Font et al., 1998). Jaedicke (2001) gives examples of possible applications of acoustic snow drift sensors. He emphasizes the advantages of acoustic sensors for snow drift monitoring at remote locations, but could not present any evaluation of the accuracy of the measurements. We present a complete evaluation of the new acoustic sensors for snow drift and discuss their applications for research or avalanche warning. We compare the suitability of sensors for operational applications.

Abstract:
Abstract Neighborhoods are known to shape well-being across the life course, particularly in later life. Yet, neighborhoods remain an underutilized focus in public health interventions due to lack of measurement specificity and understanding of mechanisms across well-being outcomes. This symposium brings together four complementary papers from social work, sociology, and psychology that incorporate multiple (objective and/or subjective) indicators of neighborhood context from national to locally-based samples to predict diverse forms of well-being. Lehning and colleagues use objective (Census) indicators of neighborhoods from the National Neighborhood Change Database, combined with data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (N=7,197), to explore links between changing neighborhood age composition and older adults’ self-rated health.. Sharifian and colleagues examine the associations between perceived neighborhood characteristics (social cohesion, physical disorder) and cognition directly and indirectly through mental health pathways (depressive symptoms, anxiety) using the Health and Retirement Study. Webster and colleagues examine links between objective (Census) and subjective (perceived safety) neighborhood indicators and social well-being using data from the Detroit-based Social Relations Study (N=259). Mair et al. combine objective neighborhood-level data with individual-level data from the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span dataset to examine direct and indirect effects of neighborhood context on obesity risk among N=2,707 middle-age and older Baltimore City residents. These papers will be discussed by Malcolm Cutchin, a health geographer and social gerontologist, who will provide an interdisciplinary reflection of neighborhood measurement and use neighborhoods as a platform to promote diverse forms of well-being in later life.

Abstract: The present work was carried out in the scope of the relations between literature and culture, and analyzes the images and representations of the Portuguese identity between millennia (final of 20th. century and beginning of the 21th.) Based on the study of Lidia Jorge, João Aguiar and Maria João Lehning texts, it is intended to highlight the tension between resistance and displacement. The text of the first author intends to show that the national imaginary, since the proto - historical times till to the to the end of 20th. century, formed the cultural configurations of Portugal and the Portuguese man, in a negative and dynamic perspective, where the past, which is not a destination, represents a starting point for the construction of the future. In João Aguiar the context of globalization and European Union takes the first place, where myths, images and values which made the Portuguese imaginary belong to the past memory. To this author, depending on the texts, the degree of resistance to the loss of the identity is configured within a death and/or resurrection frame. To Maria João Lehning it is the end of the immigration to Europe and the return home which are the thematic subjects, and with them the changes, in the last few decades, in the Portuguese physiognomy caused by the globalization and the multicultural effects. In the above authors texts, history and memory are the basic elements to recover the past, as an end of history from a post-modern condition, and seen mainly as ¿stories¿, of an interlacement of history and fiction. The organization of the work includes in Chapter I a reflection on the basic concepts involved in the discussion and bibliographical revision on the national imaginary, from the point of view of some of the most appraised thinkers of the 20th. century Portuguese culture. Chapter II is dedicated to the analysis of the literary texts in view of the apprehension of the identity images at the present times. Chapter III is an interpretation of the considered form of the imaginary in the fiction workmanships, from the look of postmodernity in the perspective of Gianni Vattimo

Abstract:
Given a protein sequence, the amino acid composition can be determined by counting the number of residues of each type. Then a molecular weight can be calculated by summing the molecular weights of the individual amino acid residues, taking into account the loss of one H2O molecule per peptide bond. Table 1 lists the molecular weights of the twenty amino acids and water. This approach assumes that the protein has not been covalently modified. Because of extensive glycosylation of some proteins, this approach can significantly underestimate the actual molecular weight. With the pKa values of Table 1, it is possible to calculate the theoretical charge of a protein at a given pH by summing the charges of the amino acid side chains and of the amino terminus and carboxyl terminus. By performing this calculation over a pH range, one obtains a theoretical titration curve and an isoelectric point (the pH at which the protein hasanetchargeof zero). This method assumes that all normally titratable groups are accessible to water, and that all side chains have the intrinsic pKa values listed in Table 1. This assumption is not completely correct, and consequently, the theoretical isoelectric point may differ from the experimentally determined value. Figure 1 shows the calculated titration curve for pancreatic ribonuclease: the calculated isoelectric point is 8.2, whereas the measured value is 9.6 (Lehninger, 1977). The calculation of extinction coefficients (Gill and von Hippel, 1989) is performed in much the same way as that of the isoelectric point Individual residues are treated as if they are free amino acids, and the overall extinction coefficient is calculated as the sum of the extinction coefficients of the residues. The same basic assumption is made: Residues are assumed to be in typical environments and not to show unusual absorption due to their local environments. In the case of the extinction coefficient, however, this assumption seems to be generally acceptable; calculated extinction coefficients are typically within a few percent of the experimentally determined value, and errors of more than 15% are rare (Gill and von Hippel, 1989).

Abstract:
The overarching purpose of this chapter is to introduce the reader to some of the essential elements of biology, genomics, and bioinformatics. It is by no means a comprehensive description of these fields, but rather the bare minimum that will be necessary to understand the remainder of the book. In the first section we introduce the primary biological molecules: nucleic acids and proteins. We discuss genetic information flow in living beings and how genetic material in DNA is translated into functional proteins. In the second section we present a short primer on probability theory; we review some of the basic concepts. In the third section we describe how biological sequences are obtained and the common strategies employed to analyze them. In the fourth section, we describe the methods used to collect high throughput gene expression data. We also review the popular methods used to analyze gene expression data. There are many other important areas of functional genomics that we do not address at all in this chapter. New experimental and analytical methods are constantly emerging. For the sake of brevity we focused our discussion on the areas that are most applicable to the remainder of the book. But, we note that many of the analytical methods presented here can be applied widely and without great difficulty to other data types than the ones they have been presented with. Here we present a focused review of molecular biology designed to give the reader a sufficient background to comprehend the remainder of the book. A thorough discussion is beyond the scope of this book and the interested reader is referred to other textbooks (Alberts, Bray et al. 1994; Stryer 1995; Nelson, Lehninger et al. 2000). The central dogma of molecular biology is a paradigm of information flow in living organisms (see Plate 2.1). Information is stored in the genomic deoxyriboculeic acid (DNA). DNA polymerase, a protein that synthesizes DNA, can replicate DNA so that it can be passed on to progeny after cell division.
