Grainger, Gary Ross. "Left modules for left nearrings." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184480.

Full text
Abstract:
Every ring has both left and right modules. In the theory of nearrings, only right modules are usually considered for left nearrings. The purpose of this report is to promote the study of an alternative type of nearring module. For left nearrings, these unusual modules are left modules. There are three reasons for studying left modules for left nearrings. These unusual nearring modules add an element of symmetry to the theory of nearrings. At the same time, comparing left and right modules of a left nearring illustrates how the theory of nearrings is distinct from ring theory. Finally, with two types of nearring modules, it is possible to carry over to nearring theory more concepts from ring theory; for example, duals of modules and bimodules. This report is an attempt to show that these reasons are valid. The first chapter is devoted to producing a well-reasoned definition for the unusual type of nearring module. It begins with a careful presentation of background material on nearrings, rings, and ring modules. This material is used to motivate the definitions for nearring modules, which are introduced in the third section. The second chapter is concerned with showing that the unusual type of nearring module can fit into the theory of nearrings. In the first section, several papers relevant to the study of these modules are summarized. The work of A. Frohlich on free additions is of primary importance. General construction methods for both types of nearring modules are then described. Finally, some general properties of left modules of left nearrings are examined. Examples of left modules for left nearrings are presented in the third chapter. First, the general constructions of the second chapter are applied in some particular cases. This leads naturally to structures that are analogous to bimodules and structures analogous to dual modules for ring modules. Here, free additions have a special role. Several dual nearring modules are examined in detail. The information needed to construct many more examples of nearring modules of the unusual type is also presented. Only small cyclic groups are used for these examples.

Seyd, Patrick. "The Labour left." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1986. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2992/.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout its lifetime the Labour Party has experienced ideological divisions resulting in the formation of Left and Right factions. The Labour Left has been the more prominent and persistent of the two factions, intent on defending the Party's socialist principles against the more pragmatic leanings of the Party leadership. During the 1930s and 1950s the Labour Left played a significant, yet increasingly reactive, role within the Party. In the 1970s, however, the Labour Left launched an offensive with a wide-ranging political programme, a set of proposals for an intra-Party transferral of power, and a political leader with exceptional skills. By 1981 this offensive had succeeded in securing the election of a Party Leader whose whole career had been very closely identified with the Labour Left, in achieving a significant shift of power from the parliamentarians to the constituency activists, and in developing a Party programme which incorporated certain major left-wing policies. Success, however, contained the seeds of decline. A split in the parliamentary Party and continual bitter intra-Party factional divisions played a major part in the Party's disastrous electoral performance in the 1983 General Election. The election result gave additional impetus to the Labour Left's fragmentation to the point that it is no longer the cohesive faction it was in previous periods and is now a collection of disparate groups.

Weber, Wiebke. "Behind Left and Right. The meaning of left-right orientation in Europe." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/107624.

Full text
Abstract:
The left-right concept is considered to facilitate communication and orientation in the political world. It has a long tradition in European politics due to its capacity to absorb different associations over time. However, this dynamic nature of the concept requires periodical reassessments in order to assure that a common conceptualisation endures. This dissertation focuses on reassign what individual left-right orientation means. Usually, this is measured by asking people to place themselves on a scale labelled ‘left’ and ‘right’ at its endpoints. The first empirical analysis of this dissertation shows that this measure is comparable across groups and countries. Thereafter, the relationship between an individual’s issue preference and left-right orientation is considered. The second empirical analysis shows that this relationship is conditioned by the importance people assign to the respective issues. The final analysis demonstrates that what explains left-right orientation is contingent on individual and contextual factors. This implies that in order to understand left-right orientation, it is not enough to identify what has an impact on a person’s position but also account for all those factors that predict variation between individuals. Given this complexity, my conclusion is that the left-right concept runs the risk of becoming too complicated to serve as an analytical tool to shed light on political attitudes and behaviour.

Abstract:
Sub-endocardial fibres line the inner surface of both ventricles and are responsible for longitudinal oscillations of the mitral annulus, such oscillations may be measured using tissue Doppler echocardiography (IDE). During systole the annulus descends and during early diastole (ETDE) and atrial systole (ATDE) itascends. This thesis examined whether changes in the velocity of the annulus ineach of these phases of oscillation, measured using tissue Dopplerechocardiography (TDE), could determine the nature of increases in left ventricular size (pathological or physiological). Study one examined differences at rest in longitudinal velocities between individuals with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), hypertension (HT), weightlifters, runners and controls, (n = 15 all groups) and all groups were aged between 20 - 36 years. The results demonstrated that both pathological groups had systolic and ETDE velocities significantly lower than groups with physiological hypertrophy (weightlifters or runners) or controls p < 0.05. AIDE however was not significantly different between groups. Additionally runners also demonstrated a significantly higher ETDE than either weightlifters or controls (p < 0.05). Binomial logistic regression identified longitudinal systolic velocity < 9 cm s" 1 and ETDE velocity < 11 cm s" 1 as the best combination of variables to predict pathological increases in heart size. Study two examined older subjects in order to determine whether the criteria set out in study one were applicable to senior athletes. The subject groups were the same as in study one however all subjects were aged between 36-55. In this case systolic annular velocity was significantly lower in groups with pathological LVH but ETDE < 9 cm s" 1 was a better differentiator. Binomial logistic regression identified ETDE < 9 cm s" 1 and a mitral E / A ratio < 1 as the best combination of variables to predict pathological LVH. Study three examined the age related changes in long axis function using the pooled data from studies one and two. This demonstrated that in the pathological LVH groups only ETDE / ATDE ratio was significantly correlated with age (r = - 0.5 p < 0.05) suggesting that there appears to be no summation of the effects of pathology and age on mitral annular velocities. The control groups demonstrated a significant age related reduction in all long axis variables (systolic velocity r = - 0.7 p < 0.05; ETDE r = - 0.6 p < 0.01; ATDE r = 0.5 p < 0.05; ETD E / ATDE r = - 0.5 p< 0.01). Weightlifters however did not demonstrate an age related decline in either systolic or diastolic annular velocities. Runners had no age related decline in systolic annular velocities, and whilst they had an age dependent fall in ETDE ( r = - 0.62 p < 0.05) the older runners ETDE were still significantly faster (p < 0.05) than that seen in control subjects. Study four investigated relationship between mitral annular velocity and VOiruK in runners, weightlifters and controls. These results demonstrated peak exercise E TDE strongly correlated to VO^PEAK (r = 0.8 p < 0.01). ConclusionsTaken together these data suggest that longitudinal velocities of the mitral annulus may be useful in determining the nature of increases in heart size, in addition the increased performance of endurance - trained athletes is due in part to functional changes of the long axis.

Wong, Wang-Chi. "'The left league decade' : left-wing literary movement in Shanghai, 1927-1936." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1986. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29400/.

Abstract:
The coup d'etat of Jiang Jieshi in 1927 brought a sudden end to the first united front between the KMT and the CCP. From then on, the Communist Party was driven underground and survived only with great difficulties, until the second united front was formed in 1937. Yet within the same period, we saw the emergence and growth of concerted left-wing activity in the literary arena. The present thesis is an attempt to look into the background, the development as well as the outcome of this movement, with special reference to the Chinese League of Left-wing Writers, an organization formed in 1930 under the direction and control of the CCP. It covers the period known as "The Left League Decade" in modern Chinese literary history. The thesis is in three parts. Part one discusses the pre-League period, the years before the formation of the League. It deals mainly with the revolutionary literary movement in 1927-28, which in fact consisted of a polemic between the ultra-left, the left and the right over the issue of revolutionary literature. The steps taken for the formation of the united front among the left after this heated debate are analyzed. Part two, which comprises four chapters, is on the League itself. The first is a general survey of the formation, membership and structure of the organization. The second and third chapters discuss the achievements of the League in the first half of its existence. The League then began to decline from 1934 onwards. The internal conflicts which finally led to the alienation of its chief leader and the "giant" of modern Chinese literature, Lu Xun, are presented in great detail in the last chapter of part two. Part three traces and gives an account of the dissolution of the organization and the subsequent Two Slogan Polemic in 1936 over the action to be taken in the new political situation. The relationship between the polemic and the developments in politics takes up a considerable portion of the discussion. Before closing the thesis, an epilogue is attached which looks at the Left League and the left wing literary movement of the thirties in their historical context. It also includes a review of their appraisal in the mainland after the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

Du, Toit Henning. "Left ventricular submitral aneurysms." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/2778.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 45-48).
Retrospective institutional review of the pathology, aetiology classification and surgical management of left ventricular submitral aneurysms (LVSMA). These aneurysms are a well recognized but relatively rare disease found commonly in patients from African ancestry. The series comprises 20 consecutive patients treated surgically at three institutions from 1985 to 2002. Natural history, clinical presentation, histo-pathological findings, suspected aetiology, operative techniques, along with a discussion of the condition is presented. There were 10 female and 10 male patients and the mean age was 17+-6 (range 8-34) years. Patients were grouped as to the degree of posterior mitral annulus involvement by the aneurysm. In Group I, (n=12) a single aneurysm neck was found. In Group II, (n=3) multiple necks and in Group III, (n=5) involvement of the entire posterior annulus by teh aneurysm was found. Mean age in Group III (29 +/-5 years) was older than that of Groups I and II (15.5 +/- 4 years) suggesting a progressive nature of these aneurysms to enlarge. Clinically patients were in New YOrk Heart Association (NYHA) class I-IV. An intra-cardiac surgical approach was used in 11, extra-cardiac approach in two and a combined approach in seven patients. Mitral valve repair was attempted in 14 patients, with two intra-operative mitral valve repair failures. Failure to control the aneurysm neck (n=2) and failure of mitral valve repair (n=2) resulted in subsequent re-operation. There was no operative mortality. Histology of the aneurysm tissue suggested co-existing rheumatic heart disease in two, tuberculosis in four and infective endocarditis in two. Unknown or congenital disease was postulated in nine patients. Although LVSMA are thought to be congenital, 8 out of 20 patients (40%) had evidence of co-existent inflammatory pathology. The etiology of LVSMA remains uncertain. Many are thought to be congenital, but the findings in this study strongly support the view that rheumatic disease, chronic infections and malnutrition also play a role. A new classification is proposed based on the pathological findings. Involvement of the entire annulus in the older patients suggests a possible progressive nature of the disease. Surgery should be the difinitive therapy in all patients. Surgical approach must be individualized but the intra cardiac approach is suitable for the surgical repair in most cases. Success in mangement is dependent on the appropriate understanding of the relationship between aneurysm and valve.

PATTONERI, PAOLO. "Left ventricular myocardial performance." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2108/1163.

Full text
Abstract:
I nostri risultati potrebbero avere importanti implicazioni cliniche.
Recently, a conceptually new Doppler index that combines the assessment of systolic and diastolic left ventricular (LV) performance was proposed by Tei and co-workers. This Myocardial Performance Index (MPI), which is defined as the sum of isovolumetric contraction time and isovolumetric relaxation time divided by the ejection time, was reported to be simple, non-geometrical, non-invasive, reproducible and independent of the heart rate and blood pressure. The MPI has been shown to have significant clinical utility. It is prolonged in many cardiac diseases even in the absence of clinical signs. Studies have demonstrated that MPI correlates well with invasive measures of both systolic and diastolic function in adults and provides prognostic information about morbidity and mortality in patients with ischemic heart disease, cardiac amyloidosis, dilated cardiomyopathy, primary pulmonary hypertension and detects early LV functional improvement as a result of drug therapy. MPI is also abnormal in individuals without overt cardiac disease who have risk factors such as diabetes mellitus and treated and untreated hypertension. Orem et al. demonstrated progressively more abnormal MPI with increasing degrees of albuminuria in a diabetic population. More recently, the MPI has shown promise in the assessment of right ventricular function in fetus, children and adults with various heart disease. The aim of this thesis was to analyse the LV myocardial performance, applying the MPI in various physiological and pathological conditions to elucidate some aspects of LV myocardial dynamic. In the first study, we demonstrated that LV geometry represents an important determinant of the myocardial performance. In fact, our data demonstrates a correlation between MPI and RWT but not with LVM/BSA. The MPI geometry-dependence must be taken into consideration during the application of the Index for the evaluation of myocardial performance, and when used as a prognostic marker in cardiac disease where the LV geometry could be modified. In the second study the MPI has been confirmed able to identify the earliest abnormalities of cardiac performance at echocardiography in a homogeneous group of uncomplicated asymptomatic type 2 diabetic patients with very short duration of disease with or without hypertension. The MPI increase was mainly due to a prolongation of IRT. A correlation between MPI and the HbA1c value, was found indicating its role as an early marker of metabolic control. Our findings may have important clinical implications. First, this index could provide an easy approach to detect an earliest phase of diabetic cardiomyopathy that precede diastolic dysfunction, and to monitor the natural history of the diabetic disease. Second, MPI could be useful for indirectly assess the metabolic control or suggest an early start of specific pharmacological treatments that may help the clinical course of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Most importantly, whether such abnormalities may be reverted by optimal metabolic control and/or pharmacologic treatments could be determined. Diagnosing pre-clinical diabetic cardiomyopathy early through MPI is not only important but also may turn out to be essential for the appropriate clinical testing of new therapeutic approaches to diabetic disease. Finally, the MPI appears to be a sensitive noninvasive technique for detecting significant subclinical left ventricular dysfunction, in patients with multiple sclerosis treated with low dose of mitoxantrone, an antracenedione antineoplastic agent. Besides, provides important prognostic information for the risk of future cardiotoxicity, beyond other conventional echocardiographic measurements. We expect that MPI may be an adjunctive parameter to the conventional echocardiography in monitoring cardiac side effects and for detecting sub-clinical cardiotoxicity of mitoxantrone. In conclusion, a simple measure of Doppler index, combining systolic and diastolic time interval as an expression of global myocardial performance, correlates with overall cardiac function, seem to be a useful predictor of clinical outcome and could be an adjunctive index for the diagnosis and for the clinical management of patients with many cardiac and systemic disease.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of the EL, one of the pan-European party federations, which is concurrently one of the most recently-launched transnational parties. The work explores the theoretical literature on Europeanisation of parties and applies a three-pronged theoretical framework, involving the theoretical insights of Johansson and Raunio, Charalambous’ ‘communist dilemma’, as well as discourse analysis to the EL and some of its most important national components. These are constituted by the Greek Coalition of the Radical Left, the French Communist Party, the Spanish United Left, and the Italian Rifondazione Comunista. The analysis covers the pan- European level, seeking to reconstruct the EL’s vision of the European Union, as well as its organisational and ideological capacity to influence the Union’s direction, and its degree of institutionalisation and Europeanisation. Concurrently, it addresses the national level, involving the aforementioned case studies of Greece, France, Spain, and Italy, as well as the internal party dimension by seeking to evaluate the importance of the parties’ long-standing factions with regards to the parties’ stance towards the process of European integration. Its most salient findings relate to the high degree of convergence between the parties under analysis, both with regards to their ideological core, as well as their policy proposals, something that could initially verify the argument of policy transfer between national and European level. Moreover, the thesis findings suggest that the financial crisis that has been affecting the whole of the EU ever since 2008 has strengthened the parties’ distinct left Europeanism. Finally, the thesis’ findings suggest that there is indeed a unified political discourse of the European radical left that has been fighting for hegemony inside the EU for the last decade and that at the moment of the drafting of the present thesis has been able to create a growing consensus inside the EL with regards to the party’s future direction and to the means of bringing about the radical changes that it professes with regards to the Union’s alternative future.

Millett, Fisher Arabella Marie Amy. "Left-libertarian theory of rights." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6407.

Full text
Abstract:
The human rights that are defended in libertarian literature tend to be limited in scope, which entails that the duties that people can be compelled to fulfil are similarly minimal. For this reason a commitment to libertarianism tends to be seen as incompatible with support for subsistence rights, enforceable positive duties, and redistributive taxation, since each one of these issues may require the infringement of libertarian property rights. In this thesis I aim to challenge these assumptions about libertarianism and to show that if a more plausible reading of libertarianism is adopted – what has come to be known as left-libertarianism – then this will generate a more substantial range of rights and correlative duties which are not only compatible with redistributive taxation, but in fact entail it. I show that libertarianism, despite its contention that human rights are exclusively negative, does not rule out subsistence rights provided that these are understood as negative rights, for example: a right not to be deprived of the means of subsistence, or deprived of a clean living environment. Negative rights can be violated not only by individuals or by institutions, but also by individuals supporting institutions. In order to respect the negative rights of others it is necessary to refrain from supporting or contributing to institutions that violate these rights. Moreover, failure to respect these rights brings about a positive duty of rectification, demonstrating the potential for positive libertarian duties even in the absence of positive rights. Since the manner in which rights can be violated is extensive, so is the scope of those individuals that owe rectification. The fundamental libertarian rights of self-ownership, which I characterise as three property rights – over the body, over the faculties (including talents, abilities and labour) and over what one can produce through exercising those faculties in conjunction with the body – demonstrate how we can come to have property rights over external objects, but self-ownership does not confer permanent private property rights over unlimited external worldly resources. In fact, a robust right of self-ownership is incompatible with the radically inegalitarian appropriation with which libertarianism is ordinarily associated. Given the equal rights of selfownership of every individual, it is far more plausible to conceive of the world as held in some egalitarian manner, rather than as unowned and available for appropriation in such a way that would disadvantage latecomers. I propose an egalitarian understanding of world ownership which comprises common ownership of land, and joint ownership of other external worldly resources such as oil and minerals. Taking the injustice of radically inegalitarian appropriation in conjunction with a duty to rectify past injustices, there follows a libertarian argument for redistribution, but crucially this redistributive taxation is collected not on income but on natural resource use. On a left-libertarian theory of rights, then, there is no right to appropriate unlimited resources, but there is a right to redistribution in the event of past injustices, including the misappropriation of worldly resources.

Abstract:
China has been through tremendous changes in the past thirty years. The country not only experienced a drastic transformation in its socioeconomic sphere, but also in its academic field. One of the most notable academic movements is the on-going debate between China’s New Left scholars and the Chinese liberals, which is developing alongside the deepening of reform in the country. The New Left scholars argue that China must design an original development path and to avoid excessive copying from the modernization model in Western countries. They have identified many problems that occurred in the society in recent years, which arguably resulted from the country’s rapid development. This thesis aims to decode the two most prominent perspectives from the New Left scholars – China’s revolutions and its economic reform. To explicate their perspectives, I draw on the studies of New Left scholars such as Wang Hui, Cui Zhiyuan and Gan Yang, as well as a few selected articles from the liberal side of the debate. Through exploring the various publications, this thesis has hopefully demonstrated a coherent clarification of the still-blossoming new intellectual phenomenon. Furthermore, this thesis also aims to alter the stereotypical discrimination against Leftism and its derivatives, as the results have clearly shown that the New Left scholars are not anti-development and in fact, they are calling for no more than an alternative modernization path for the country.

I compose work from what may be considered debris. There is a history contained within these items that I want to redefine. Materials dictate and inform the direction of my work. The search and discovery of these objects is intuitive. Acquiring the piece(s) ties into my inspiration of its possible new function. My objective is to encourage others to notice the everyday and see the aesthetic value of these objects. Often they are organized into a grid. Whether taking an individual object or making multiples into a single image, I am altering the function of these items, reordering them and declaring them as artwork. My transformation of objects is intended to give them a new history.

Abstract:

At sixteen, Alice, a gifted and highly sensitive teenager in her final year of school, has it all: perfect parents, loyal friends and big plans to attend university. She would never have imagined that in a week everything could vanish. After a party where things go horribly wrong, Alice has a dark secret, one she longs to tell her mother, Penelope, with whom she shares a close bond. But when Penelope is killed in a head-on collision on route to an unknown destination, Alice is bereft of both confidante and guardian. In the chaotic days following her mother's death, Alice discovers she was having an online affair. She fears that her mother's deception renders their whole life together a lie. As she delves into this mystery, she becomes obsessed with the secret life of Penelope and is torn between her pursuit of the lover's identity and an instinct to abandon the search. She is simultaneously embroiled in a series of scandals at school. Disillusioned, Alice risks everything to uncover a truth which she believes will miraculously solve her crisis. Her best friend, Theresa, is the constant voice of reason which Alice wilfully ignores. When she finally tracks her mother's lover to his home, her neat judgements disintegrate as they encounter a complex reality. The idea of Penelope as a sexual and emotional being, not simply a one-sided symbol of maternal care that sacrifices herself to the needs of her family, is, for Alice, deeply disturbing but ultimately redemptive. In this coming-of-age story, as Alice begins to relinquish her judgement of others, she is able to forgive herself for her own failings and accept ambiguity as part of life. It is her decision to move beyond prescribed roles as well as to identify and fulfil her own needs that constitutes her essential development into maturity. It is a story for young adults that acknowledges that childhood is the springboard from which we launch ourselves into the world, that the things we learn in adolescence and the ways in which we cope with adversity during that time determine to a large extent the adults we will become and that those youthful choices reverberate throughout our lives.

In my Bachelor’s project I have attempted to explore and develop my relationship with the amorphous concept that is ”style”. As an illustrator I am sometimes torn between the idea of having a single recognizable style or to be experimental and to use aesthetics as a tool rather than a signifier of a personal brand.  The project takes the form of an anthology of weird fiction stories, where each of the eight stories are illustrated in different ways and with different materials. I have choses weird fiction as a subject not only because of personal interest but also because of the specific qualities of the genre. Weird fiction deals in uncertainties and mood, with a huge emphasis on how things are told, not what is told. In this project I have attempted to transfer some of these qualities to my illustration practice. Letting the contents of the image take the backseat to how it is drawn. Both as a method for producing the anthology but also to develop as an illustrator overall.

Abstract:
Journalistic sources seem to suggest that there has been a resurgence of the American Religious Left (i.e., politically liberal Christians who support progressive agendas) in the wake of the strong support from the conservative Christian right in the 2016 presidential election of Donald J. Trump. Using quantitative analysis, we draw on survey data from the General Social Survey, the Public Religion Research Institute, and the National Congregations Study to assess the possibility of a resurgence among the Religious Left. In comparison with a speculated rise, our analysis indicates a notable decline in both the prevalence and engagement of Americans who self-identify as both religious and politically liberal. Not only is the constituency of the Religious Left shrinking, they have also been steadily disengaging from political activity in the last decade. Especially when looking at more recent elections, it has been those among the Secular Left who have been the most politically engaged. We summarize these empirical patterns in relation to the Religious Right and consider the potential for influence among the Religious Left aside from electoral politics. We also briefly consider other possibilities for their political impact and reflect on the inadequacy of the label “Religious Left” for capturing important dynamics. In the end, we urge greater attention to politics among sociologists of religion, providing a set of research questions to consider in light of the upcoming American 2020 national election.

Abstract:
THE ROOM YOU JUST LEFT is a poetry collection written from the perspective of a female speaker as she navigates relationships, culture, and identity via the lens of the Cuban-American experience. The collection is divided into three sections: Paleotempestology, Machete, and Saturn Returning. The first illustrates the often turbulent nature of romantic relationships, the second highlights the speaker’s culture, and the third is a singular long poem offering both insights and questions about what it means to arrive at the age of twenty-seven. The collection is composed of free verse, prose, experimental, and formal poetry, and includes code-switching to illuminate the speaker’s family dynamic and dueling dualities within herself. Many poems revolve around mortality, and more specifically, the speaker’s relationship with her father and his descent into old age, as well as an imagined mythology for her mother’s family while detailing their struggles as exiles. Another major theme is romantic relationships, heartbreak, and traversing the modern dating world. Other themes explored include childhood, memory, and the body, utilizing narrative as well as surrealistic techniques. It draws influence from the intense Latina-feminist pulse of Sandra Cisneros, the revelatory sexuality of Sharon Olds, the imaginative whimsy of Kiki Petrosino, and the dark wit of Frank O’Hara.

Full text
Abstract:
High blood pressure makes the heart work harder and promotes enlargement of the left ventricle, left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), which is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease and death. LVH is characterized for the most part by two different sets of observable characteristics (genetic phenotypes): an enlarged left ventricle (1) due to increasing wall thickness and (2) due to increasing wall dilation. The molecular and pathological mechanisms by which either phenotype occurs is unknown. We do know, however, that both phenotypic variations of LVH are determined by quantitative and qualitive changes in the genetic expression of cardiac cells that result in structural alterations in the muscular tissue that affect the blood flow within the heart. Genetics, the study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics, therefore play a prominent role in the development of LVH. A genome-wide association (GWA) study to investigate the genetics of LVH and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) in a cross-sectional-study of 1,212 subjects of white European ancestry and 2.5 million nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) yielded a total of 19 genome-wide significant (P < 5x10-7) variants. The GWA revealed no genome-wide significant variants; however, at suggestive P value < 1x10-5 were found two potentially susceptible regions of 97.6 Kb in the SYT14 gene and 3.4 kb in the GAS1 gene for association with LVMI. Nineteen (19) susceptible regions harboring common variants associated with LVH and 2 potential regions associated with LVMI were found. Further functional genetic studies (relating to a variable quantity whose value depends on one or more other variables) are required to characterize the biological relevance of these findings to high blood pressure associated with enlargement of the left ventricle.

Abstract:
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is designed to help create a national minimum standard in the United States‘ public education system by requiring states to implement accountability systems. I examine the effect of No Child Left Behind on private school enrollment using a difference in differences model. Using data from the Private School Universe Survey, conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, which is a survey conducted every two years and is mandatory for each American private school‘s administration to complete, I can evaluate the movement between public and private schools during the period when the requirements of No Child Left Behind were being implemented. I hypothesize that public schools have moved resources away from high achieving students toward the marginal students causing the high achieving students to enroll in private schools. Hence, private school enrollment will have increased due to No Child Left Behind. I find through my regressions that this hypothesis is true; the percentage of school-aged children in private schools increases after the signing of the No Child Left Behind Act.

Full text
Abstract:

The massive migration of rural labor to urban areas in China over the past few decades has created the largest labor flow in world history. The proportion of the residential population in rural areas decreased from 80% in the late 1970s to 44% in 2016. Due to institutional and practical constraints, whole family migration is often not feasible for most migrant families. As a result, 61 million children age 0-17 are estimated to be left behind in rural communities by at least one parent seeking employment elsewhere. These numbers reflect a major change in the family and community environment in which children are cared for. Parental migration brings about changes in family structure and dynamics, entails a trade-off between economic benefits and parenting inputs, such as parental supervision and emotional support. At community-level, large-scale selective migration leads to remarkable changes in community demographic composition, shifting sociocultural norms and aspirations, influencing community institutional resources and collective social capital.

Over the past few decades, the scientific literature examining the implications of this large-scale migration and split families on the well-being of children left-behind has proliferated. However, empirical evidence on the effect of parental migration on left-behind children’s well-being is mixed for China and other countries in the context of international migration. Few studies have attempted to reconcile the inconsistent findings by examining the moderator effect. Although the potential effects of migration on cognitive development of children in origin communities reflect both household- and community-level processes, few studies have examined how community-level migration affects child development. In addition, mostly focused on the well-being of school-aged children, very limited study has been conducted on parental migration and early childhood development in the first few years of children’s lives, especially in the domain of cognitive and behavioral outcomes. Moreover, most researches have relied on cross-sectional data, exploring the association between a contemporaneous measure of parental migration and statically measured child outcomes at one point in time, ignoring the potential impact of the timing, transition and cumulative exposure to parental migration/absence, and may also be prone to selection bias.

To bridge the gap, the first analysis examines the conditions that may influence the effect of parental migration on child self-rated health (SRH). The results suggest a relatively weak main effect, but this is due in part to the influence of moderating factors. Children are more likely to report a good health status when the economic return of migration is substantial, if they are from impoverished communities, or when mothers remained at home to provide care while the father migrated a short distance within the same province. The second analysis focuses on examining community migration effect. Findings suggest lower cognitive achievement in communities experiencing high migration intensity. Children living in very high migration intensity areas are expected to have 3.57- and 1.54-unit lower verbal and math scores, which are equivalent to 1.67 and 0.87 years of formal education respectively. A possible explanation for this effect is the change in demographic composition brought about by the outmigration of better-educated adults. Finally, applying growth curve modeling strategy, the third analysis examines parental migration and early childhood development trajectories and states, taking into account timing, transition and cumulative exposure to parental migration. Our findings indicate that while left-behind children are comparable in the prevalence of childhood illness, positive behaviors and preschool enrollment, two-parent migration has a detrimental effect on children’s linear growth, cognitive stimulation, and home environment. Lack of appropriate cognitive stimulation in the critical early years could have important implications for child cognitive development.

Suburbs in Melbourne present to us a unique context with which a new approach towards urban form can be devised using the existing conditions and opportunities found with infrastructural developments. This thesis contains the investigations on the various 'pathologies' of the urban fabric specifically on the potential use of 'Spaces Left-Over After Planning' as by-product to infrastructural development in relation to the reinvigoration of Melbourne suburbs under the influence of current and future metropolitan growth pressures. The contents of the research aims to demonstrate the potentials for urban diversification followed by densification using the already inherent characteristics of the selected suburbs (Oakleigh, Waverley and Broadmeadows) to facilitate the metropolitan expansion of Melbourne with the intention of encouraging ways in which suburban fabric can reach its maturity along with new infrastructural developments to foster community engagement.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis determines the response of Left-Handed Media (LHM) to surface effects. A LHM half-space with a roughened interface, modelled by a graded index boundary, is shown to give rise to an analytical solution for the propagation of electromagnetic radiation through this inhomogeneous layer. Significant field localization is generated within the layer, caused by the coherent superposition of evanescent waves. The localization is shown to greatly deteriorate transmission when losses are present. The addition of a second interface to the LHM, creating a perfect lens configuration, allows for the exploration of evanescent mode propagation through a perfect lens with roughened boundaries. The effects of the field localisations at the boundaries serves to diminish the resolving capability of the lens. Specifically the layers produce an effect that is qualitatively similar to nonlinearly enhanced dissipation. Ray-optics is used to analyse negative refraction through a roughened interface, prescribed by Gaussian statistics. This shows that rays can focus at smaller distances from the interface due to the negative refractive effects. Moreover, a new reflection mechanism is shown to exist for LHM. Consequently an impedance matched configuration involving LHM (such as the perfect lens) with a roughened interface can still display reflection. A physical-optics approach is used to determine the mean intensity and fluctuations of a wave passing into a half-space of LHM through a roughened interface in two ways. Firstly through the perturbation analysis of Rice theory which shows that the scattered field evolves from a real Gaussian process near the surface into a complex Gaussian process as distance into the second media increases. Secondly through large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations that show that illuminating a roughened interface between air and a LHM produces a regime for enhanced focussing of light close to the boundary, generating caustics that are brighter, fluctuate more, and cause Gaussian speckle at distances closer to the interface than in right-handed matter.

Full text
Abstract:
In narratives of the New Left, a number of key events and ideas are often used as symbols for broader movement trends. The Columbia University protests of the spring and summer of 1968 are one such example. Many Columbias examines a variety of autobiographical writings by one-time New leftists, using the protests as a thematic nexus. It examines how the texts coalesce to form a composite narrative of the protests, written by a group of autobiographers involved in the discursive process of creating cultural memories. The first chapter examines the Columbia protests as a broad coalition that brought together seemingly disparate groups into a moment that encapsulated many of the oppositional political trends of the late 19605. The protests were immediately mythologized by a variety of different presses, a process explored in Chapter Two. This examines how they were mapped in different journalistic contexts, including New Journalism, the underground press, and the mainstream press. Subsequently, the Columbia protests have become entrenched within dominant readings of the New Left and the American "1968". Such narratives often t race the rise and fall of SDS as a synecdoche for the New left and, in this way, Columbia is seen to precipitate the emergence of Weather Underground and the destruction of SDS. Accordingly, the events have been read primarily through the memories a few key Columbia SDS leaders who helped found the Weather Underground. Such narratives are explored in Chapter Three, which contextualises a group of participant histories and memoirs written in the 1980s via the Cold War and culture wars. Participants have subsequently been involved in a process of reinstating the idea of Columbia's political and racial diversity. Chapter Four examines how the protests were remapped around the fortieth anniversary in 2008, and how participants helped to complicate an SDS-centric reading of the events, as they were reclaimed by, and for, marginalised groups, particularly African American participants. Exploring similar t hemes, Chapter Five deliberately forgoes chronology to examine the personal relationship between Mark Rudd and Jane Alpert, as represented in a variety of autobiographical texts, which sheds light on how gender affects the memory of Columbia, the New Left and feminism. Primarily concerned with autobiography, memoir and participant history, this thesis contextualises these genres with a number of other cultural forms, including archival material, academic histories of the New left and of the 1960s, cinema, political-essay and journalism, and the reunion as cultural phenomenon, in order to build a rich historiography of the protests that investigates layers of their representation.

Liu, Qing. "Antennas using left handed transmission lines." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2010. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/595/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research described in this thesis is concerned with the analysis and design of conventional wire antenna types, dipoles and loops, based on the left-handed transmission line approach. The left handed antennas have a unique feature that the wavelength of the induced current becomes shorter with decreasing frequency. The left handed transmission line concept can be extended to construct reduced-size dipole or loop antennas in the VHF frequency band. The use of higher order modes allows orthogonal polarisation to be obtained, which is thought to be a feature unique to these antennas. Efficiency is a key parameter of left handed antennas as the heavy left handed loading increases the resistive loss. A study of the efficiency of small dipole antennas loaded with a left-handed transmission line is specially described, and the comparison with conventional inductive loading dipoles. In a low order mode, the efficiency of L-loading dipole is better with low number of unit cell. If the number of cell increases, CL-loading presents comparable and even better performance. In a high mode the meandered left handed dipole gives the best efficiency due to the phase distribution, presenting orthogonal polarization as well. The optimized dipole loaded with parallel plate capacitors and spiral inductors presents the best performance in impedance and efficiency, even better than the conventional inductive loading. A planar loop antenna using a ladder network of left handed loading is also presented. Various modes can be obtained in the left handed loop antenna. The zero order mode gives rise to omnidirectional patterns in the plane of the loop, with good efficiency. By loading the loop with active components, varactors, a tunable left handed loop antenna with a switchable radiation pattern is implemented. The loop gives an omnidirectional pattern with a null to z axis while working in an n = 0 mode and can switch to a pattern with a null at phi = 45° in the plane of the loop in an n = 2 mode.

Abstract:
Aims: To examine the metabolic changes associated with LVH secondary to AS, to examine the role of GIK as an adjunct to myocardial protection during AVR, and to examine the mechanism of its action. Methods: 220 patients with LVH secondary to AS were randomised 1:1 to receive an infusion of GIK at the time of AVR. The primary endpoint of the trial was incidence of low cardiac output state. At pre-specified time points, biopsies of the LV anterior wall were taken for analysis of metabolic changes associated with LVH, and changes in the phosphorylation state of proteins identified as key regulators of metabolism and cardiac protection. Results: Patients with LVH were found to exhibit a profound down-regulation of the mRNA transcript levels of the master transcriptional regulators of metabolism resulting in a significantly abnormal metabolome. Treatment with GIK was associated with a reduction in LCOS from 33% in the control group to 10% in the treatment group, p=0.0001. Treatment with GIK was associated with a significant increase in the level of protein O-GlcNAcylation. Conclusions: In this trial, treatment with GIK was associated with a significant improvement in post-operative haemodynamics. Patients with LVH may benefit from metabolic therapies at the time of surgery

Abstract:
Since its birth at the time of the French Revolution, Left/Right has been a key tool for understanding politics. This thesis investigates how we think about politics using Left/Right: how it shapes, constrains and interacts with our most deeply-held conceptions of politics, how its meaning and implications have developed historically and in the British context, and why it might warrant the attention of the student of ideologies. After outlining the methodological underpinnings of the study and histories of Left/Right, the thesis examines uses of Left/Right in a range of contexts of actual thinking about politics. Left/Right is widely used in both the academic study of politics and popular commentary on British politics. The early New Left in Britain in the late 1950s and early 1960s is studied as a group attempting to influence the discourse around the political label “the Left”; a section of the neo-conservative New Right in Britain in the 1980s, around The Salisbury Review, is analysed as a political group with a complicated relationship to the political label “the Right”. Left/Right emerges as an element of the contested “common sense” of politics. Further, it is argued that some elements of common sense, such as Left/Right, may be expressed through narratives. Left/Right is theorized as a political narrative, or as a story about politics. The concept of political narrative explores the possibility that Left/Right may be susceptible to “interpretation”, both in terms of the assumptions about how politics is done and how politics should be done that underlie it, and more complexly in its relationship with a master narrative of political conflict understood as class struggle. Students of ideologies can learn much about how we think about and do our politics by attending to Left/Right.

Let p and q be distinct primes, and G an elementary amenable group that is a residually finite p-group and a residually finite q-group. We conjecture that such groups G are left orderable. In this paper we show some results which came as attempts to prove this conjecture. In particular we give a condition under which split extensions of residually finite p-groups are again residually finite p-groups. We also give an example which shows that even for elementary amenable groups, it is not sufficient for biorderablity that the group be a residually finite p-group and a residually finite q-group.

CUSTODI, Jacopo. "The Nation and the Radical Left : radical left parties and national identity in Portugal, Spain and Italy." Doctoral thesis, Scuola Normale Superiore, 2022. https://hdl.handle.net/11384/125083.

Full text
Abstract:
This Ph.D. dissertation inquires into an often-neglected dimension of radical left politics: the relation with national identity. Although the scholarly literature on party politics has mostly overlooked this relation, it is a relevant aspect of radical left parties’ identity and concrete politics. It is an issue for which there is a puzzling heterogeneity of outlooks within the ranks of the radical Left. Many European radical left parties tend to simply downplay national identity in their political discourse; but others openly reject it; and still others fiercely embrace it. The aim of the research is thus twofold: (a) to study how radical left parties frame and express national identity in their discourse; and (b) to examine the reasons that lie behind the high variation of stances held by ideologically similar actors. This thesis first presents a historical and theoretical overview of the relation between leftist and nationalist politics; then, in order to answer the two research questions, it centres the empirical focus on contemporary radical left parties in Spain, Italy and Portugal. The research brings together nationalism studies and the party politics scholarship on the radical Left; and it draws from an interpretive approach to comparative political science. At the methodological level, this study is based on a triangulation of three different methods of data gathering and analysis: semi-structured interviews, discourse-theoretical analysis and participant observation. As the findings indicate, the relation of the radical Left with national identity is complex and multifaceted, and the heterogeneity of outlooks is related to contextual factors, from historical conditions to political conjunctures, but also depends on the agency of parties. In fact, the stances of radical left parties on national identity intersect with other relevant aspects of their politics, such as their ideological positioning, their strategic reflections and their interaction with the political arena they operate in. Furthermore, national identity is more than something either present or absent in the discourse of a given radical left actor: it can mean different things and its presence in the discourses and practices of radical left politics may assume very different forms. Accordingly, the relation with the nation is an important dimension that should not be dismissed when studying radical left parties. It is a shortcoming in the academic literature that this thesis covers, adding to the studies on the radical Left a thorough empirical analysis of this often-omitted, but by no means irrelevant, dimension.

Abstract:
The overall aim of the thesis is to explore the negative life experience of left-behind children in a dynamic and integrated perspective taking left-behind children, their guardians, parents, school and other social communities into consideration. It explores the current situation of some left-behind children in China, and discusses the causes and negative effects on children‟s comprehensive development. A qualitative research method has been used because of the in-depth outcome accessible through face-to-face interview. Three left-behind children in different family compositions and one teacher were interviewed. The outcome of this study is discussed in multiple dimensions to explore consequences of left-behind children in China. The results suggest that parents’ migration can lead to more serious problems for the children than expected. The management of left-behind children requires concerted efforts from various social systems, not only parents, schools, children welfare center, and the whole nation, otherwise it would worsen deteriorated social issues.

Noor, Mumin. "Interaction of the left ventricle and left ventricular assist device during mechanical circulatory support for advanced heart failure." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/51108.

Abstract:
The work in this thesis was undertaken to examine clinically significant questions at a time of evolving Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) technology. The main theme of the research was to increase our understanding of the interaction between left ventricle and newer continuous flow LVADs through both in-vitro models and clinical studies with the ultimate aim of improving patient care. The hydrodynamic performance of the two continuous flow LVADs (Thoratec HeartMate II and HeartWare HVAD) was compared in a normothermic, human blood-filled pulsatile mock circulation model under conditions of steady flow and under simulated physiological conditions. These experiments were repeated using dextrose in order to determine its suitability as a mock circulation blood analogue. This study found that clinically representative pulsatile relationships are better represented as H/Q loops instead of linear plots. This allows for greater understanding of the instantaneous H/Q relationship of LVADs with the native LV. The relationship between LVAD pump speed and exercise capacity was studied in patients receiving support from a continuous flow HM II and examined the influence of residual LV function on this relationship. This study found that exercise time and pkVO2 are sensitive to pump speed in patients with poor LV function receiving HM II support. By contrast, insensitivity of exercise parameters such as pkVO2 and exercise time to changes in pump speed may be a non-invasive indicator for LV functional recovery in patients receiving support with rotary LVADs. Effect of temporarily increasing pump speed on exercise capacity was then studied in a group of patients supported with continuous flow LVADs. The study showed that it was safe and feasible to temporarily increase LVAD speed during exercise and this resulted in a significant increase in peak oxygen consumption. Furthermore, improved exercise capacity was observed in both axial and centrifugal pump devices. Radial strain and radial strain rate values were measured by Speckle Tracking Echocardiography to assess LV function and mechanics. The effect of reducing pump speed on these measurements was also examined. My result showed that the radial strain values are significantly lower than normal range and in keeping with advanced heart failure patients. I found the measurements to be relatively independent of degree of LVAD speed and may potentially reflect underlying LV function. Lastly, I investigated the feasibility of recording acoustic waveforms from a LVAD using an electronic stethoscope and analysing the frequency components of the LVAD acoustic spectrum. After recording the findings in patients with normal pump function, we compared it to patients with pump thrombosis. The acoustic profile is primarily determined by rotation speed and device design. In pump thrombosis cases, there were atypical spectral peaks during pump thrombus episodes. Acoustic monitoring is a simple non-invasive method which may have clinical utility in the diagnosis of pump thrombus episodes in patients supported by a rotary LVAD.

Xie, Jiawei. "Writing Chinese Characters: Right or Left? : The Chinese Discriminatory Policy of Left-Handedness Correction in Terms of Handwriting." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Centrum för tillämpad etik, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-129186.

Abstract:
Chinese left-handed are found to be very few, especially in terms of handwriting. The Chinese educational policy that fully entitles teachers in primary school to change the left-handed students to write with their right-hand, by nudging and even force, is found to be mainly blamed as the main cause. The thesis is to raise the ethical discussion and define this policy as being discriminatory against the left-handed by checking the features, definition and identification of discrimination, and reasons forming and supporting such a discriminatory policy will be taken into the major consideration as the source of discrimination. Therefore, the thesis is to propose solutions to help with the abolishment of the policy and the elimination of the prejudicial attitudes toward the left-handed, especially in terms of writing. The thesis itself, due to the limit of previous research and scientific support, has its own blindness or disadvantage, however, such a work could be helpful with the later discussion.
