Full textProblem. With the Swedish public sectors problem with efficiency in mind, several reforms have beeninitiated during the last decades. These reforms go, in academic contexts, under the name“New public management”. The reforms have resulted in, among other things, an increasedcompetition, privatization and goal-orientation in the public sector. These new conditionshave changed the public leadership challenge and demand an increased focus on innovation todecrease costs and increase value as a central aspect of the Swedish public leadership.
Purpose. The purpose for this research has been to examine the conditions for innovation in a publicorganization and how the leadership can improve the organizational innovativeness.
Method. This research does not aim to measure the innovativeness in a public organization, instead itfocuses on understanding the condition for innovation and how the leadership can affect theorganizational innovativeness. Hence, it is motivated that I use a qualitative approach in theresearch process. Semi structured interviews and precedent research are being used as afoundation for the results and recommendations given.
Conclusion. The leadership’s opportunities to improve the organizational innovativeness depend on anumber of independent organizational variables and the adaption of the variables to oneanother and the system as a whole. Leadership includes both the formal boss and the coworkerin a relationship that ought to be characterizing by reciprocity and cooperation. Bothmanagement and leadership are vital competences for the formal boss as both structure andculture must support each other. The conditions for organizational innovativeness improve ifthe organization has a structure and a culture that enhances: transboundary cooperation, spaceand energy for creative activities, a common context that contributes to an organizationalidentity and motivation and competence and organizational learning. The examinedorganization needs to decentralize the right to make decisions, improve the openness of theculture, and strengthen the organizational identity and audit structures in purpose to facilitatetransboundary cooperation.

Full textIntroduction This essay answer the research question how the City Executive of Västerås City define innovation today and how they can create a common ground for their future innovation. Method The heading methodology describes how the performance of work have been done and justification for the selected method. The used methodology is qualitative method combined with action research. Theory The theory are presented under this heading and will generate an understanding on which areas are involved in the essay. The theory presented in three themes, innovation, prerequisites for an innovative group work, and common ground. Empiricism Under the heading empirical the data from three interviews are presented, a workshop and a questionnaire. All empirical data has been collected at the City Executive of the City of Västerås. Empirical data show a divided organization that lacks guidelines for their innovative efforts. It shows that employees do not have a tolerant climate and there is disagreement about what innovation actually means for the City Executive Office. Analysis This heading compiled the theoretical framework and empirical data together, to give an understanding of how the different areas are linked. The analysis suggests that the City Executive Office lacks a clear basis and guideline for their innovative work, they have difficult to see innovation as something internally and they also lack a shared vision of what innovation is, which is one of the basic conditions for innovation. Discussion This section discusses how the City Executive can proceed to create a common ground for their future innovation. Those with a mandate in the organization should establish a clear vision with the City Executive Office work on innovation, where it clearly states what innovation means. They should also be found to create clear goals and strategies to achieve this vision and how to go about implementing this vision of the entire department. This is to everyone in the organization should seek a common and clearly defined goal. Conclusion Under the headline conclusion, this analysis will culminate in the City Executive to work on for future innovation projects. City Executive Office needs to raise the level of knowledge about what the context of innovation can arise in, which is not only externally. They should also establish what innovation will mean for them and work jointly to establish a common basis internally what innovation will be for the City Executive Office. Furthermore, they should also work with the climate in the department.

Full textAim: Previous research on activity-based offices has focused on subordinates and the effects it has on their work. The use of the concept also affects employees in a management position. The purpose of this study therefore is to illustrate how managers percieve that their opportunities to exercise leadership are affected by the use of an activity-based office. Method: The study's scientific approach is hermeneutic phenomenology and we have used an abductive research approach. The theoretical framework is based on previous research, and was updated continuously during the study. The study's research design is a case study, and data collection was made in the form of semi-structured interviews. Empirical material was analysed with the theoretical framework as a base and the results are discussed in the analysis. Result & conclusion: The study shows that activity-based offices affect the leader's opportunities to exercise leadership in all areas we have investigated, although to varying degree. As in previous research on the subject our study shows that the increased interaction an activity-based office brings, is a strong contributor to the various effects that have been noted. The effects however are not always percieved in the same way from a manager’s perspective. Suggestions for future research: Our study only included companies that have recently implemented an activity-based office. We propose a study including companies that have been using an activity-based office for a longer time to discover new challenges, problems and opportunities for managers. We also believe that future studies should look at other aspects of leadership than those we focused on and how these are affected by the activity-based office. Contribution of the thesis: The study shows that the activity-based office affects the leader's opportunities to exercise leadership. The leadership has generally become more conductive and supportive rather than controlling. However, we have also noted a number of challenges that the concept entails that affect the manager's job.

Full textAbstract Title: Honeybee leadership in e-commerce businesses in Sweden - a study of sustainable leadership Level: Student thesis, final assignment for bachelor’s degree in business administration Author: Cecilia Rosen and Amarvir Singh Supervisor: Kristina Mickelsson and Agneta Sundström Date: 2019 - January Aim: The aim of the study is to gain further knowledge of how business leaders in e-commerce businesses in Sweden handle sustainability through honeybee leadership, aimed at innovation, environmental and social responsibility, and through investment in employees. Method: This study uses a qualitative method based on the hermeneutic approach. A comparative design is applied to compare the two selected e-commerce companies where 10 semi-structured interviews have been conducted with five managers and five employees. Respondents have received their own anonymity code in order not to be traceable back to them. Empirics: The interviews have been coded into 4 different themes with 3 categories developed from each theme to present the result of the study in a simpler way. These themes have received a separate headline to follow more easily, what has been found in the study. Conclusion: The study shows that business leaders in the e-commerce industry work consistently with innovation and personnel investments, but not as distinctive when it comes to environmental and social responsibility. There is a need to develop the common environmental goals of the organizations and to convey these in a better way within their organizations. One of the companies also showed the need to develop their ability to train their staff as they lack a strong educational culture. Contribution of the thesis: The study has contributed to an increased understanding of how individual principles in honeybee leadership can be studied within organizations. Our study has also contributed to an insight on how e-commerce managers invest in their staff by recruiting and working with staff who can take responsibility. Suggestions for future research: To strengthen our study, we recommend it to be replicated and compared with other e-commerce companies based on the same three principles. A more comprehensive study of e-commerce companies that include the majority, or all principles than those we have chosen, would also be useful to get an overall picture of how the principles affect each other and how e-commerce companies work with honeybee leadership. Key words: Honeybee Leadership, Sustainable Leadership, E-commerce, Innovation,Investment in Personnel, Environment and Social Responsibility.

Full textTitle: Workforce involvement innovation in industrial organizations: a management perspective. Author: Axelsson Tobias Tutor: Lindhult Erik Mentor: Sjödin Carina Subject/curse: Innovation management, KIN190 Keywords: innovation, management, workforce involvement, organization, industrial sector Problem: Scandinavian organizations have a long tradition of workforce involvement and find it essential to have an engaged workforce to handle innovation. Workforce involvement innovation can give many indirect or direct positive effects but the area are (relative) new to the industrial sector. The question that rises is what an industrial sector workforce need to accomplice innovative changes, and what kind of innovative work do they fit for? What possibilities does a workforce have to create ideas in an organization? Purpose: With this study the aim is to create a clearer picture about innovative workforce involvement in the industrial sector. The study follows a management perspective and tries to understand workforce involvement through a manager’s eye. Method: The study follows a small innovative initiative in which two groups, one internal and one external to a organization use the same material to find innovative solutions to problems in the working environment. The study is a qualitative action research project, and is focusing on a managers learning process through the project. Conclusion: The study shows that internal workforce is suited to create incremental solutions which also are easy to implement. It’s not an easy task and the organization has to be prepared to involve several levels of the workforce. A manager who leads the process has to be prepared to receive a lot of criticism and reserving a lot of time to projects. If it’s a bigger project the organization might need to get external help. The study also shows that the workforce needs support through the whole innovative process in projects. This is even if they work with their own ideas and their own working environment. There is no easy way even if you might think that a workforce should manage to improve their own situation. The workforce needs support all through an innovative project. Managers have to reserve a lot of time to innovative projects. Managers have to realize that they will receive criticism and reflect over there own view about situations. An organization that wants to create innovative changes might need to change work assignments, recruit or hire external help to succeed. Workforce innovation projects should result in a better working organization both by actual solutions but also in the commitment of the work force. Workforce involvement increases organizational internal transparency.

Full textProblem Companies and organizations have to open up their innovation processes in today's society in order to compete with other companies and grow into a strong player in the market. In the open innovation processes are organizations cooperating with external partners in various disciplines, this is a process with new approaches where innovation and creativity are of great importance. Such an innovation process has a great need for good communication between leaders and participants. We have therefore chosen to study open innovation projects in which we specifically looked at communication between the project leaders and participants. Purpose The purpose of this study is to provide a picture of communication that are important between leaders and project team. This is the basis for creating guidelines for good communication in open innovation projects. Method This study used a qualitative approach in which empirical data has been collected through interviews and questionnaires. Conclusions Study shows that it is important that the leader serves more as an administrative person, other than that it possesses the technical skills. And also has the ability to work with many things at once and can be networking because it´s important that the leader can hold together it´s project team. Common goals are important to the project team for everyone to benefit from each other in the network. We have also recognized the importance of a common culture in the project but it is also difficult to create this in open innovation projects as cooperation with external partners means that opportunities for joint meetings are few.

Full textA prerequisite for audit firms to survive, is focus on both improvement and renewal of services and products. This because companies constantly need to adapt their range of services and products to the external environment fluctuations and changing demands. The purpose of the study is to explain how integrated leadership affects the ability to achieve ambidexterity in accounting firms. The study aims to explore various leadership styles and potential relationships between them and ambidexterity in audit firms. Thru use of relevant theory and adjoining literature regarding integrated leadership and ambidexterity, a model has been produced which examines connections between the current leadership styles and ambidexterity in audit firms. With the help of a questionnaire sent to authorized and approved auditors, the model has been tested empirically. This resulted in 141 responses, with 104 completed responses. The results of the study indicates that none of the tested leadership styles can explain effect on ambidexterity, however, the result shows that authorized auditors have a negative correlation with ambidexterity in relation to approved auditors. Recent research indicates that ambidexterity is affected by factors not being covered in this study. Possibly these factors have stronger effect on ambidexterity than integrated leadership which may be the reason why no explaining relationship has been found on the matter. Regardless what governs ambidexterity audit firms operates in a changing environment, which makes improvements of existing supply important to focus at the same time as new services seem to be needed for long term survival. Knowledge regarding how leadership affects ambidexterity implies that audit firms get a glimpse of what could increase their survival. Through a balance between exploitative and explorative innovation, it contributes to improving the competitiveness of the firms.

Full textSociety is changing and is influenced by global factors. The work life is forced to continuous development and adaptation to current conversions. Therefore, companies and organizations must constantly be renewed and developed for continued existence. Creativity and innovation are two terms often used in connection with development and renewal in organizations. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the overall factors that leaders perceive influence creativity and innovation in the organization. The aim was also to examine how leaders perceive the relationship between creativity and health. Four leaders in different positions from two organizations were interviewed. In the analysis of the interview material, an approach inspired by phenomenography was used to find out the leaders' perceptions of creativity, innovation and health in the organization. The result illustrated that both freedom and structure and a balance between these extremes is needed to create creativity and innovation in the organization. The results also showed that leadership and organizational culture affect balance. A pedagogical leadership and an open organizational culture were seen as particularly favorable for the balance between freedom and structure. One of the most urgent subjects to develop was to improve the competence of how to balance between freedom and structure, and how the balance between management and leadership can be created. The leaders stated that there is a connection between creativity and health, and that those concepts affect each other in a positive spiral. One obstacle in the development of creativity, innovation and health in the organization was reported to be lack of time. Bringing creativity and health into a single development organization could create more space for this work in organizations, in accordance with previous research in the subject.

Full textPrevious research shows that organizations need to develop and deliver what they already dobut to do so in new ways so as not to risk stagnating. Balancing these elements, however, doesnot turn out to be so easy, even if current quality practices tend to be more about developingongoing processes than creating new heights of innovation. A crucial factor in the work ofcontinuous improvement and innovation is committed leadership. Although leadership hasbeen identified as a key factor in success, there are knowledge gaps about how companiesshould be managed to both deliver what they do and at the same time be innovative. This study aims to contribute to the development of knowledge on how companies can be ledto both deliver what they do and at the same time be innovative. The study has chosen to focuson soft values such as leadership, culture, as well as innovation and continuous improvementsthat we find interesting for current research issues.A quantitative study was conducted in the form of a survey to get a current picture of how theorganization's managers and employees view quality and innovation work. The results show that there is development potential to work with organizational cultural tools. The organization's managers need to be given increased knowledge, understanding and trainingon how they can work with them when working with continuous improvement and innovation. The conclusion of the survey is that leaders, with the help of organizational cultural tools, cancreate the conditions to combine the development of what you already do with innovation.Crucially, there is a holistic approach that permeates the entire organization and that managershave the ability to create a motivating climate where employees ideas are visibly supported, rewarded and followed up and that leaders can handle errors and shortcomings in a positivemanner. A key factor is the ability to communicate.

Full textPurpose and problem formulations The purpose of this study has been to demonstrate the way in which companies work to promote intrapreneurship amongst their employees. We focused on two related problem formulations to conduct this study. The first being factors that are crucial for promoting intrapreneurship in the IT-Industry, and the second being how idea generation, leadership, and culture affect intrapreneurship. Theory The purpose, and basis, for this study is idea generation, leadership, and culture, which formed the theoretical chapter. Method This study focused on qualitative research with a deductive approach. Included in the study are five semi-structured interviews with various senior executives in the IT-industry. Result The result of the study found that certain aspects play a crucial role for the intrapreneur. Employees must first and foremost be change-oriented. In addition there should be opportunities for employees to come up with creative ideas that are managed internally at the company. This should be done with delegated leadership. Finally, the corporate culture must be open, as this will harbor an environment for discussion in both change and opportunity between employees and their leaders.

Full textThis thesis constitutes an independent and independent study that is intended to complement the Vinnova project Swedish Edtest, which runs 2020-2022. The project aims to design a scientific method for implementing and evaluating digital learning resources and to contribute to the development of suppliers' services and products. This degree project focuses on leadership, working methods and organizational conditions linked to successful innovation work. The leaders and persons with leading and/or coordinating assignments interviewed in the study work within one of the municipal or independent principals who are also partners in the project. The study shows that the school as an organization has proven to be far more agile and innovative than expected. Participating school leaders have all testified that the starting distance for reteaching has been short and beyond expectations, which suggests that there is a much greater innovation capacity among schools and principals than was previously known when leading and organizing the work. This may be one reason why methods and structures have not been designed to harden and further develop the innovation that is taking place. As far as the innovation that is taking place now is concerned, the added value does not seem to lie primarily in working digital, but that the digital way of working develops teaching and the way in which knowledge objectives are managed and achieved. All interviewees report that the transition to long-distance and distance learning has increased the innovation capacity of the activities in which the work is managed or coordinated. To what extent and in what way varies. The majority of those interviewed state that they already see solutions or methods that are judged to support learners' learning even when returning to regular teaching and activities. Examples given are increased digital knowledge and maturity among the staff, increased collegial cooperation and exchange of experience, re-design of teaching with a greater focus on what is really important for students to achieve the goals of their education, and greater flexibility of when and remote education. The interviewed leaders promote innovation and learning through transformative and relationship-oriented leadership with strong involvement in the core process of the school and with a focus on learning over technology in terms of innovation. They also describe in a large majority that this spring's transition to remote and distance education has created a marked development-oriented leadership among themselves as well as in their staff groups. Personal conditions required are courage and trust, long-term approach and perseverance, commitment and participation. Organisational conditions required are local free space and mandates as well as resources and time. Other recurring concepts are management's focus, targeted development areas and conditions to prioritize and actively participate. The majority of those interviewed state that innovation support work is done voluntarily, partly by creating conditions for interested and forward-leaning teachers and partly mandatory through organized meetings, divided according to different focus. The organisation around evaluating impact and added value is, according to a significant majority of the interviewees, on the other hand, underdeveloped or missing completely.

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to develop an understanding about which conditions for development and innovation that is current in The Swedish Armed Forces and what can hinder or encourage these, and also how these conditions relate to each other. We have done this through a qualitative study where we have interviewed Swedish Armed Forces managers of development. After analysing the content from these interviews with Classic Grounded Theory as a method a model was created. The models name is Cross-border transformation and the aim is at the fact that a transformation is started and is ongoing. As a result of the security policy and with a legitim base in democratic decisions the Swedish Armed Forces is yet again in a transformation. From a minimalistic inset defence with employed soldiers and sailors to a democratic conscript based national defence of our territorial integrity. This is happening in the same way as it did when the wall fell, a new officers system was developed and we paused the conscription, as new and revolving yet again. Now instead the focus is again to growth in both volume, geographically as well as in capabilities and categories of personnel. This is a transformation that effects all parts of the Swedish Armed Forces and all its processes, but also the society at large and the cities where new military establishments yet again are to become part of the normal day life. We see through our model that development rather than innovation as a concept is used, but has not bin prioritised in the Swedish Armed Forces during the years of a minimalistic inset defence. It is therefore cross-border to leave a culture and an era to cross into another. To change the way we lead and are led in normal day life, to see development and creativity as something that is allowed to exist and that can cost both in time and money. It is cross-border and a transformation in addition to happen in a context where the society has changed. The technology development is led by civilian interests and the Swedish Armed Forces has to find its place in the global world of suppliers and innovations in almost all areas. It is cross-border that we yet again are breaking new ground, that we have to cooperate with the world around us to be able to carry out and get effect of the decisions of a new direction for the Swedish Armed Forces that has been made. At this point the Swedish armed forces leadership philosophy, the mission tactics and the chosen leadership model plays a decisive role for the possibility of a successful cross-border transformation. Based on this we come to a summarising conclusion that with mission tactics as a philosophical and methodological foundation for leadership, combined with developing leadership in every leaders conscious practice and with mutual trust between concerned parties will good conditions for a more innovative and developing climate be encouraged. To be able to benefit from this climate it requires that innovation becomes a conscious and active action and process.

Full textPurpose: Visual tools can help reduce the human errors that occur in the workplace and create a shorter information time. The information is obtained significantly faster and more accurately by visualizing the information channel where photos, schedules, posters, graphics and color coding are visual tools that are used. To make their workplaces more effective, a construction company has developed a visual tool named Visual Planning Production (VPP). VPP aims to visualize the project and its workflows with various kinds of boards for easier communication between the management and workers. The aim of this study is to investigate how planning and communication between management and craftsmen in production can be improved with the support of VPP. Three questions has been created:1. What is the main purpose of using VPP?2. How does the daily planning and communication work today?3. How can VPP be improved to become a more useful tool to apply for the site management in production?Method: Three methods were selected to answer the three questions. Qualitative interviews with site management and craftsmen leader, document analysis and observations on projects.Findings: Planning and communication between site management and craftsmen can be improved with the help of VPP. This only applies if the site management is given the education they need to use the tool properly. It is also important that the site management can adapt the tool to its project needs. VPP will then provide the transparency and foresight that the project needs to work.Implications: The tool with its boards and meetings currently has potential of improvement. Three examples of difficulties with the tool is: There is no information and education for the site management The new way of working is not seen as more positive than the current one There isn’t space enough in the rooms to hang the boardsThe findings from the analysis tells us what about the tool that can be improved. Some of these points are: A more thorough education for the site management and accessible information A thorough explanation of the use of the tool and its benefits To be able to customize equipment and meetings as needed in the projectsLimitations: The theoretical framework could include concepts like Lean, where VPP has its roots. A general verging of reality is not applicable to this report as the report only concerns two projects in the same geographical area. Interviewers lacked some experience and knowledge about VPP, and this may reflect on a more general reality about the subject.

Full textResearch questions: •How do leaders experience the phenomenon groupthink in innovation and development work and the way groupthinkexpressesitselfintheirteams? •How can an understanding of groupthinkchange the process of decision making? Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to increase knowledge about GT and how it ́s occurrence is experienced by leaders in innovation and development work within Swedish organizations. Furthermore, the aim is to get an apprehension of how a broader understanding of GT can change the way leaders work in decision-making. Method: Mixed methods research with a cross-sectional design. The qualitative method uses interviews with a thematic analysis, the quantitative method uses questionnaires analyzed through different partial coding's. Conclusion: GT expresses itself in innovation teams in Swedish organizations, though in a positive way. Problematic here is when antecedent conditions and symptoms emerges into consequences (Aronson et al., 2020). Depending on the branch of industry and size of the organization the line between antecedent/symptoms and consequences differs, it also seems that organizations within public sector runs a bigger risk of reaching the consequences of GT. This because of higher restrictions and fewer with mandate to reach a conclusion, this decreases the flexibility leading to a decrease in innovative abilities. There are also risks within smaller organizations because of the risk for more cohesive groups since they do not have the same personnel resources or aren't as inclined to work ad hoc.

Full textThe purpose of this thesis has been to explore how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the leadership and the direction of the organization. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected various parts of the leadership. The results clearly indicate that managers feel overloaded since they have to handle a lot of administrative tasks and alternating meetings. Due to lack of time and balance between work and private life, the ability to have a holistic view, interpret and take in perspectives from outside-in and inside-out has been a challenge for the leaders. The results also indicated the need for clear communication between the leaders and the employees and their customers about what actions are required in order to adapt to the new situation that the pandemic has imposed. During the pandemic the organizations were forced to take fast action based on the regulations and restrictions from the Public Health Agency and the government. Established digital channels were used but new digital channels had to be identified to create interaction and relations within the organization and with the customers. The fast transformation to the digital world has affected the direction of the organization to think differently and be more flexible and adaptable to new unexpected changes, such as the pandemic. The organizations have used key indicators to identify and get a clear picture of how the pandemic has affected the direction of the organization internally and externally towards its customers. This new digital transformational shift has also forced the customers to enter new digital platforms and interact online with the organizations. The new digital awareness from the customers has induced new digital requirements and services which in turn have resulted in the need for new digital self-services and a higher and stronger digital competence from the organizations customer service. A contributing discussion to the organizations and to the society is to refer to the concept of profitability as a value-creating effect sustainable over time, connected by three elements: leadership, direction of the organization and customer need.

Full textCompanies today face increased competition from more than just local companies, whereupon the importance of standing out from their competitors and maintaining a high pace of innovation has also increased. Thus, it is up to companies to design their organization to enable the utilization of their employees' innovation proposals and thus avoid stagnation. One way to do this is to shape an intrapreneurship culture within the company, something that is not without challenges. The purpose of the following study was to, on the basis of employee statements, carry out an organizational cultural analysis of how a well-established Swedish company captures employees' innovative ideas, as well as opportunities and difficulties with intrapreneurship. The study was conducted as a qualitative, interpretevistic, case study with an inductive approach, whose empirical data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and internal documents. The findings were interpreted abductively using Schein's multilevel model of organizational culture that divides culture into three levels which are exemplified as follows: artifacts – innovation proposal templates and innovation processes, beliefs and values – officially stated goals and published values, as well as basic assumptions – that standardization inhibits specialization, and the role IT can and should play within the organization. The study shows that decentralized and self-governing areas of business can simultaneously handle and evaluate innovation and intrapreneurship in very different ways. One conclusion is that decentralized and self-determined goals can lead to an imbalance, where one area of business accounts for the majority of the organization's total innovation work. As a result of its silo structure, certain problems arise regarding the business areas' ability to share lessons related to innovation processes. This means that the process within which employees submit innovation proposals, and thus also their conditions for doing so, varies depending on where within the organization the individual works. The organization's IT department could to a greater extent assist in innovation and digitalization work, whereupon the relationship between IT and organizational culture is also highlighted. Furthermore, the study found a predominant uniformity between the organization's three cultural levels, where artifacts were largely in line with its acclaimed values of caution and long-term perspective, as well as basic assumptions about optimal risk management.

Full textThis paper focuses on leadership problems and possibilities regarding creativity in a specific R&D organization. This is done with the help of a model consisting of four domains of special interest for R&D leaders. A survey in the form of personal interviews was conducted with leaders and staff members of two R&D sections in the organization. The analysis pointed towards problems on work load and stress issues. Furthermore the organizational structure of the two sections provided a discussion on optimal structural build‐up in order to maximize creativity. Trust issues arose because of the apparent use of control by upper management as described by lower level leaders and the employees. Indications showed that the trust issues put up obstacles for learning and dealing with failure. On the other hand the relationships between section management and staff were perceived as good. Also the ground works of a good creative work was laid with the trusting relationships between fellow professionals within the group.

Full textPurpose The purpose of this study was to investigate how project managers self estimates their leadership and project members perceive motivation in pre-development projects at the Karolinska University Hospital and Scania. Design/methodology/approach This study is quantitative and deductive. To investigate the presence of transformational leadership in project managers and internal motivation in project members we have chosen to use two questionnaires, Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire and Work Preference Inventory. Researchers have examined both forms in terms of validity and reliability. Findings The results of our study showed that a project manager at Karolinska had a higher incidence of transformational leadership than at Scania. In both organizations the transactional leadership was also fairly common while the occurrence of passive avoidance leadership was lower. In the analysis of our data the subfactors in the MLQ Leader Form (5x-Short) showed that idealized influence and intellectual stimulation were higher at Karolinska for transformational leadership. For the transactional leadership was contingent reward higher at Karolinska while leadership with active exception was higher at Scania. Our investigation showed that the project members in both organizations had a higher incidence of intrinsic motivation compared to extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation in project members was significantly higher at Scania than Karolinska but there was no difference regarding intrinsic motivation. When the data from the subfactors in WPI were analysed it showed that the factors of intrinsic motivation differed very little between the organisations. Extrinsic motivation factor compensation was higher at Scania in the projects but in general it was the same for the project members in both organizations. The second external motivation factor, orientation towards recognition and control of others was higher at Scania both in projects and in general. Research limitations/implications In our investigation we examined a selection of projects in two organizations. The selection was done based on Scanias definition of pre-development projects. Practical implications Previous research suggests that transformational leadership and internal motivation is particularly important in the early phase of radical innovation. Our investigation showed that both transformational leadership and internal motivation was more common than transactional leadership and extrinsic motivation at both Karolinska and Scania. A next step would be to expand the number of organizations and projects. It would also be interesting to examine if leadership and/or motivation has any correlation to the result of projects. It would show whether increased transformational leadership and internal motivation could have a positive effect on the results in pre-development projects. Originality/value We have not found any research that compares two organizations engaged in pre-development projects with regard to transformational leadership and intrinsic motivation. Keywords: pre-development project, transformational leadership, innovative behaviour and intrinsic motivation

Abstract
The study explored the influence of leadership behaviour and boundaryless work on creativity at five Swedish advertising agencies and five schools of art at compulsory level. The participants indicated to which extent 61 statements were in accordance with their experience of boundaryless work and the behaviour of their leader. Leadership behaviours benificial to creativity, validated through earlier research, was evaluated. Creativity was measured through self evaluation. Two openended questions surveyed factors that respectively influenced creativity positive and negative. Statistic analysis showed a positive correlation between leadership and creativity. No significant correlation between boundaryless work and creativity. A qualitative method of category analysis showed boundaryless work influence on creativity as both positive and negative and in cooperation with leadership behaviours. The study present the relation between boundaryless work and leadership behaviour through the ”Boundaryless-Structure model”. The result contributes to understanding how boundaryless work influence creativity in modern workingplaces. Remaining result confirmed earlier findings of factors benificial for creativity.
