Abstract:
AbstractAdvances in genome sequencing have led to a paradigm shift where project costs are no longer limited by sequencing costs but rather by the computational problems associated with genome assembly. There is an urgent demand for more efficient and accurate methods, in particular for complex genomes. The combination of traditional second and emerging third generation sequencing offers unique benefits. Our own method LazyB enables the resource efficient assembly of low abundant datasets.

Abstract:
Among the variety of modern nanomaterials a special class – nanoflowers can be distinguished. These new nanostructures have induced the interest of scientists due to the topographic features of nanolayers, the special location of which allows a higher surface-to-volume ratio compared to classical spherical nanoparticles. Such topographic structure significantly increases the efficiency of surface reactions for nanoflowers. The main purpose of this type of nanomaterials is their use as enzyme stabilizers. Enzymes are biosystems with high activity and substrate specificity, but their use is limited by certain disadvantages, such as high sensitivity to the environment, low reproducibility of experimental results and requirements for complex purification of the components. To facilitate the functioning of enzymes in various conditions, organicinorganic hybrid nanomaterials have been developed, the name of which indicates that all components of inorganic nanoparticles are associated with organic materials. These nanoparticles have numerous promising applications in catalysis, as biosensors, and for drug delivery. Organic-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers have led to the development of a new branch of chemistry – the chemistry of hybrid nanomaterials, whose research is currently undergoing rapid development. Thus, the study of organic-inorganic hybrid nanocrystals can lead to new creative solutions in the field of chemistry of enzyme systems and the rapid development of bionanomaterials and new branches of biotechnology.

Abstract:
Hybridization is often maladaptive and in some instances has led to the loss of biodiversity. However, hybridization can also promote speciation, such as during homoploid hybrid speciation, thereby generating biodiversity. Despite examples of homoploid hybrid species, the importance of hybridization as a speciation mechanism is still widely debated, and we lack a general understanding of the conditions most likely to generate homoploid hybrid species. Here we show that the level of genetic divergence between hybridizing species has a large effect on the probability that their hybrids evolve reproductive isolation. We find that populations of hybrids formed by parental species with intermediate levels of divergence were more likely to mate assortatively, and discriminate against their parental species, than those generated from weakly or strongly diverged parental species. Reproductive isolation was also found between hybrid populations, suggesting differential sorting of parental traits across populations. Finally, hybrid populations derived from three species were more likely to evolve reproductive isolation than those derived from two species, supporting arguments that hybridization-supplied genetic diversity can lead to the evolution of novel “adaptive systems” and promote speciation. Our results illustrate when we expect hybridization and admixture to promote hybrid speciation. Whether homoploid hybrid speciation is a common speciation mechanism in general remains an outstanding empirical question.

Abstract:
The constantly increasing gap in the demand to supply for pigeon pea has been a matter of concern to pigeon pea researchers in India to increase productivity and production. The entomophily abet cross-pollination behavior of pigeon pea is a desirable crop to develop and establish the hybrid system to exploit the commercial heterosis. Keeping this in view, pigeon pea research was directed towards a new initiative on hybrid pigeon pea breeding at ICRISAT, Hyderabad immediately after the identification of a male sterile line in 1974. Which in turn led to the development of a new GMS hybrid called ICPH 8 in 1991 for cultivation in the central zone. Then five GMS hybrids (PPH 4, CoPH 1, CoPH 2, AKPH 4101, and AKPH 2022) in the early maturing group were released by the state and central varietal release committee. Nevertheless, the GMS-based hybrids did not yield much success due to difficulty in the production of commercial F1 seed. Trifurcation of All India Coordinated Pulses Improvement (AICPIP) and further strengthening of AICPRP on pigeon pea led to the development of national level strategic and basic research vis-àvis provided testing platform for varieties and hybrids. The advertent GMS system led to the development of a stable and economically viable CGMS system in pigeon pea after 26 years of its first GMS initiative. The first CGMS line GT 288A and its maintainer B line was registered by Pulse Research Station, SDAU, GAU, SK Nagar, Gujarat in 2000. Consequently, in 2006 the first CMS hybrid GTH 1 was developed by SDAU, Gujarat, and released by CVRC for cultivation in the central zone. Thirty-nine CGMS lines have been registered with ICAR-NBPGR and four CMS-based hybrids (ICPH 2671, ICPH 2740, IPH 15-03, and IPH 09-5) are released for cultivation. It is to endorse that the joint efforts of the ICAR-NARS and ICRISAT led to the establishment of the hybrid system in pigeon pea by sharing the materials and technology. Nonetheless, supplying quality hybrid seed is a mammoth task to reap the true potential of hybrid technology in pigeon pea.

Abstract:
Hybridization is frequent in the wild but it is unclear when admixture events lead to predictable outcomes and if so, at what timescale. We show that selection led to correlated sorting of genetic variation rapidly after admixture in 3 hybrid Formica aquilonia × F. polyctena ant populations. Removal of ancestry from the species with the lowest effective population size happened in all populations, consistent with purging of deleterious load. This process was modulated by recombination rate variation and the density of functional sites. Moreover, haplotypes with signatures of positive selection in either species were more likely to fix in hybrids. These mechanisms led to mosaic genomes with comparable ancestry proportions. Our work demonstrates predictable evolution over short timescales after admixture in nature.

Abstract: This article presents Maximon, a syncretic deity from Guatemala, in the context of protestant attacks on popular Catholicism. This hybrid deity, which is associated with catholic saints, Judas, and mayan god Mam, is invoked by different groups within the population (indigenous and mestizo). This deity has also become the symbol of hidden social protest movements, in particular when Maximon is linked to the image of corrupt politicians, large landowners or military officials. Nonetheless, in the present context of massive conversions from Catholicism to Pentecostalism, a growing religious sector, the rituals offered to Maximon tend to represent ancestral maya traditions. In addition, the growing international importance of these religions has led to an adoption of Maximon rituals to attract tourists, in order to generate new income, and to claim legitimacy.Résumé : L’article présente la figure de Maximon, divinité syncrétique du Guatemala, dans un contexte religieux où la religion catholique populaire est remise en cause par les Églises protestantes. Abstract:
The structural compatibility of two hyperthermostable family 1 glycoside hydrolases, Pyrococcus furiosus CelB and Sulfolobus solfataricus LacS, as well as their kinetic potential were studied by construction of a library of 2048 hybrid β-glycosidases using DNA family shuffling. The hybrids were tested for their thermostability, ability to hydrolyse lactose and sensitivity towards inhibition by glucose. Three screening rounds at 70°C led to the isolation of three high-performance hybrid enzymes (hybrid 11, 18 and 20) that had 1.5—3.5-fold and 3.5—8.6-fold increased lactose hydrolysis rates compared with parental CelB and LacS respectively. The three variants were the result of a single crossover event, which gave rise to hybrids with a LacS N-terminus and a main CelB sequence. Constructed three-dimensional models of the hybrid enzymes revealed that the catalytic (βα)8-barrel was composed of both LacS and CelB elements. In addition, an extra intersubunit hydrogen bond in hybrids 18 and 20 might explain their superior stability over hybrid 11. This study demonstrates that extremely thermostable enzymes with limited homology and different mechanisms of stabilization can be efficiently shuffled to form stable hybrids with improved catalytic features.

Abstract:
Three synthetic hybrids and two natural hybrids involving Psathyrostachys huashanica are reported. Gross spike morphology of the hybrids of Pseudoroegneria cognata and Pseudoroegneria spicata ssp. inermis with P. hauashanica was not as indicative of hybridity as in other hybrids involving P. huashanica. Meiotic analyses of these two synthetic hybrids confirmed that little homology exists between the genomes S and Nh. Coenocytism in the hybrids P. huashanica × Secale montanum led to the formation of pseudomicrospores in nondehiscent anthers. No metaphase through telophase chromosome stages could be observed and thus the relationship between genomes Nh and R could not be assessed. Intermediate spike morphology of, and the sterility in, natural hybrids of P. huashanica with P. fragilis and P. juncea substantiated their hybridity. High meiotic pairing in hybrids between P. huashanica and P. fragilis, averaging 1.03 I + 6.48 II, indicated a close relationship between the two species. Occasional high pairing and frequent abnormal meiosis, manifested by degenerating prophase pollen mother cells (PMCs) and empty anthers lacking PMCs of later stages, in the hybrid P. huashanica × P. juncea suggested a more distant relationship between the parental species. It is concluded that P. fragilis is more closely related to P. huashanica than P. juncea. Key words: hybrid (intergeneric), hybrid (interspecific), genome, coenocyte, chromosome diminution, Psathyrostachys, Pseudoroegneria, Secale.

Abstract:
Abstract A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of LED lighting on the growth of seedlings of hybrid tomato plants. Four hybrids (Captain F1, Refiner F1, Coral Reef F1 and Fire F1), seven treatments of irradiators (monochromatic red, green, blue, white) and three dual light treatments (green+blue, blue+red, green+red) were carried out in the laboratory of artificial climate. Radiation with monochromatic had a role in increasing hypocotyl length, the height of plant, transpiration and stomata connection. The results have shown a significant effect on radiation with monochromatic red on hypocotyl length (73.00mm) and the height of plant (30.94cm). Plants radiation with monochromatic blue gave the highest transpiration (4.69 mmol/m2.s) and stomatal conductance (0.30 mol./m2.s). The dual radiation had a role in increasing dry weight for the plant and leaf chlorophyll content (SPAD). Radiation with (green+red) provided the best stem dry weight (0.91g). Plants irradiated with (green+blue) exhibited the highest leaf dry weight and root dry weight (1.96g and 3.12g respectively). Plants radiation with (blue + red) showed the highest leaf chlorophyll content (SPAD) (559.19). In the monochromatic light, the effect of hybrid Fire F1 showed the highest hypocotyl length (64.11mm) and height of plant (29.00 cm), and hybrid Refind F1 had the highest transpiration (3.58 mmol/m2.s) and stomatal conductance (0.23 mol./m2.s). In the binary spectral effect, the hybrid Coral reef F1 resulted the highest stem dry weight, leaf dry weight and root dry weight (0.68 g,1.76 g and 2.39g respectively), and hybrid Refind F1 had the highest leaf chlorophyll content (SPAD) (468.27).

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the yield, morphometric and chemical characteristics, and the digestibility of various corn hybrids cultivated in different locations for silage production. Four corn hybrids were grown: P2866H, P3456H, P30R50VYH and P4285YHR, in four locations, defined as farm A; B; C and D. The hybrid P4285YHR presented the highest plant and ear insertion heights (2.72m, 1.52m respectively), with a minimum registered height of 2.63 m and 1.42 m, for plant and ear insertion height, and for that reason it presented the highest yield of fresh biomass (78,089kg ha-1). The TND values showed trend very close to that observed in the DISMS of the whole-plant, with hybrid P3456H presenting the highest estimated value (68.74%), and the hybrid P4285YHR the lowest among them (65.25%). In general, lower fibrous carbohydrates and lignin content, higher fibrous carbohydrates content, together with satisfactory grains participation in the plant structure led to a greater dry matter digestibility. Hybrids with lower plant heights do not necessarily have lower dry biomass yields, but hybrids of greater height and with high stem and leaf participation tend to have a higher aFDN content and less dry matter digestibility.

Abstract:
Banana breeding programme in India involves maintenance of various genetic resources of banana, of which triploids constitute the maximum share over diploids or tetraploids. RAPD studies conducted in these clones exhibit many distinct genotypes. During a hybridization programme, although many crosses were made, seed set and seed germination were relatively poor in many crosses. Male fertility in banana hybrids could be assessed by pollen output per anther; pollen viability and pollen size, which vary from cross to cross, and also from ploidy to ploidy. Ploidy levels in hybrids are estimated by phenotypic appearance (scoring technique) and confirmed either by stomatal density, size and number of chloroplast per guard cell pair or root tip mitosis. However, flow cytometry appears to be the most reliable method in many disputed cases. Generation of parthenocarpic hybrids depends largely upon selection and utilization of parents with parthenocarpic pedigree in a breeding programme. Evaluation of hybrids and parents indicated the nature of inheritance with respect to plant height and suckering habit but no definite trend could be ascribed to the traits of bunch orientation. Diploid x Diploid breeding approach has led to identification of a superior triploid hybrid, NPH 02-01, while Triploid (with AB)xDiploid approach has led to the development of a promising diploid hybrid H.212 and a triploid hybrid H.96/7 (ABB). Similarly, the Triploid x Diploid breeding programme resulted in development of many potential tetraploids that need further improvement. Innovative breeding approaches through in vitro mutation breeding and in vitro polyploidazation resulted in the development of many potentially useful variants. Breeding for resistance against biotic stresses such as Fusarium wilt and nematodes holds promise in banana, and, biochemical mechanisms for resistance in resistant genotypes/hybrids have been elucidated.

Abstract:
In the paper, the new hybrid LED driver is proposed. The hybrid LED driver combines the idea of pulsed power conversion of a conventional LED driver with the idea of adjusting configurable LED strings synchronously with input voltage like in a direct AC LED module. This synthesis promises to increase efficiency and reduce electromagnetic interference. Due to low power loss a hybrid LED driver is attractive for circuit integration to reduce size and cost compared to the traditional LED drivers. But in the hybrid LED drivers of previous arts the topology exploits LEDs in switch-pulse mode operation, which limits the efficiency because of LEDs slow nature. In addition, the light intensity of the LEDs decreases in pulsed mode. Therefore the new hybrid LED driver is proposed to overcome the drawbacks. The attention was paid to preventing LEDs from hard switching to improve efficiency and alleviate EMI issues. To confirm the results obtained, computer modeling was performed using specialized software.

Abstract:
The main methods of growing new corn hybrids of different maturity groups in the forest-steppe remain insufficiently studied, and there are also few studies on the development and adaptation to specific soil and climatic conditions of integral technological systems, which would be based on the use of the biological potential of the culture and the application of resource-saving measures; to scientifically justify the principles of hybrid selection for specific subzones of the Forest Steppe and to theoretically argue the directions of resource saving in varietal technologies for growing different biotypes. The article presents the results of studies on the influence of sowing dates on the grain productivity of various corn hybrids in the conditions of the right-bank forest-steppe of Ukraine. Research has established that sowing dates affect the passage of phenological phases in corn. Late sowing times contribute to the shortening of the growing season and grain ripening period. The vegetation period of corn hybrids at the early sowing period varied between 117-134 days, medium - 115-136 days, and late - 113-132 days. A delay in sowing corn hybrids led to a decrease in yield, but this trend was not followed for all studied hybrids. So, in particular, in hybrid P 9619, early sowing led to a decrease in productivity. Therefore, it must be sown later in order to obtain high productivity. On the basis of two-year observations, it was established that the highest grain yield was formed on variants with mid-early hybrids: P 8904 – 15,1 t/ha, 10,7 and 13,4 t/ha; P 8666 – 14,5 t/ha, 12,6 and 13.0 t/ha, respectively, when sowing in the early, middle and late season. The realization of the genetic potential of its productivity in the conditions of the right-bank forest-steppe of Ukraine depends on the selection of a corn hybrid of a certain maturity group with the available zoning and sowing dates.

Abstract:
Background: Coumarins exhibit a plethora of biological activities, e.g. antiinflammatory and anti-tumor. Molecular hybridization technique has been implemented in the design of novel coumarin hybrids with several bioactive groups in order to obtain molecules with better pharmacological activity and improved pharmacokinetic profile. Objective: Therefore, we tried to gather as many as possible biologically active coumarin hybrids referred in the literature till now, to delineate the structural characteristics in relation to the activities and to have a survey that might help the medicinal chemists to design new coumarin hybrids with drug-likeness and varied bioactivities. Results: The biological activities of the hybrids in most of the cases were found to be different from the biological activities presented by the parent coumarins. The results showed that the hybrid molecules are more potent compared to the standard drugs used in the evaluation experiments. Conclusion: Conjugation of coumarin with varied pharmacophore groups/druglike molecules responsible for different biological activities led to many novel hybrid molecules, with a multitarget behavior and improved pharmacokinetic properties.

Abstract:
Rhizoctonia foliar blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani anastomosis group 1, is an economically important fungal disease found throughout the world. The fungus attacks numerous crops, including cereals, roots and tubers, legumes, and cruciferous, horticultural, and ornamental plants. In tropical America, this invasive and destructive disease also attacks most Brachiaria spp. used as forages in the ranching industry, especially in the production of cattle. Research to solve this constraint has been ongoing at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture and has generated new Brachiaria hybrids with excellent agronomic performance, tolerance to poor soils, and, particularly, high resistance to biotic factors such as Rhizoctonia foliar blight. These hybrids belong to lines obtained from Brachiaria humidicola, B. brizantha, and B. decumbens. To identify resistance among Brachiaria hybrid genotypes, the hybrid clones were evaluated for their variability in resistance, and their disease reaction was also determined and characterized. Results led to the identification of hybrids that not only were highly resistant to the blight but also had excellent agronomic characteristics.

Abstract:
Hybrid male sterility (HMS) contributes to speciation by restricting gene flow between related taxa. Detailed cytological characterization of reproductive organs in hybrid males is important for identifying phenotypes that can help guide searches of speciation genes. To investigate possible cellular causes of HMS, we performed crosses between closely related species of the Anopheles gambiae complex: An. merus with An. gambiae or An. coluzzii . We demonstrate that HMS in African malaria mosquitoes involves two defects in the reciprocal crosses: a premeiotic arrest of germline stem cells in degenerate testes and a failure of the reductional meiotic division of primary spermatocytes in normal-like testes. The premeiotic arrest in degenerate testes of hybrids is accompanied by a strong suppression of meiotic and postmeiotic genes. Unlike pure species, sex chromosomes in normal-like testes of F1 hybrids are largely unpaired during meiotic prophase I and all chromosomes show various degrees of insufficient condensation. Instead of entering reductional division in meiosis I, primary spermatocytes prematurely undergo an equational mitotic division producing non-motile diploid sperm. Thus, our study identified cytogenetic errors in interspecies hybrids that arise during the early stages of postzygotic isolation.

Abstract:
An intriguing outcome of hybridisation is the emergence of clonally and hemiclonally reproducing hybrids, that can sustain, reproduce, and lead to the emergence of polyploid forms. However, the maintenance of diploid and polyploid hybrid complexes in natural populations remains unresolved. We selected water frogs from the Pelophylax esculentus complex to study how diploid and triploid hybrids, which reproduce hemiclonally via hybridogenesis, are maintained in natural populations. During gametogenesis in diploid hybrids, one of the parental genomes is eliminated, and the remaining genome is endoreplicated. In triploid hybrids, the single-copy genome is typically eliminated, while genome endoreplication does not occur. To investigate how diploid and triploid hybrid frogs reproduce in populations without parental species, we crossed these hybrid animals from two separate pure hybrid populations located in Poland. Using cytogenetic analysis of tadpoles that emerged from the crosses, we established which gametes were produced by parental hybrids. The majority of hybrid females and hybrid males produced one type of gamete with the P. ridibundus genome. However, in both studied populations, approximately half of the diploid and triploid hybrids simultaneously produced gametes with different genome compositions and ploidy levels, specifically, the P. ridibundus and P. lessonae genomes, as well as diploid gametes with genomes of both parental species. Triploid hybrid males and females mostly produced haploid gametes with the P. lessonae genome; however, gametes with the P. ridibundus genome have also been observed. These results suggest that not all hybrids follow the classical hybridogenetic reproduction program and reveal a significant level of alterations in the gametogenesis pathways. In addition, we found a variable survival rate of particular progeny genotypes when we crossed hybrid females with different males suggesting the important role of postzygotic barriers on the maintenance of pure hybrid systems. We suggest that the observed variability in produced gametes and the different survival rate of the progeny with certain genotypes is crucial for the existence of pure hybrid systems.

Abstract:
AbstractCrossability of Pinus sibirica and P. pumila hybrids and their parental species was studied using the controlled pollination method. Pinus sibirica and its hybrids were represented by grafts at the “Kedr” field station southeast of Tomsk Oblast, Russia; the parental species was of local provenance, with its hybrids obtained from the Southern Baikal region. In the case of P. pumila, trees were pollinated in a wild stand located in the Upper Angara River delta. Parental species had the highest number of filled seeds under open pollination. When they were pollinated with hybrid pollen, the trees showed nearly two-fold reductions in the number of filled seeds. Hybrids tended to abort most ovules during the first year of female cone development, resulting in a high seed abortion rate and consequent low seed production. The number of filled seeds obtained from hybrids was low, with levels ranging from 8.2 to 24.3%. Because of weak reproductive isolation between hybrids and parental species, crosses are inevitable and lead to species introgression. The hybrids probably contribute to interspecies genetic exchange both through hybrid seed production following pollination by parental species and by hybrid pollen distribution.

Abstract:
DNA:RNA hybrids can lead to DNA damage and genome instability. This damage can be prevented by degradation of the RNA in the hybrid by two evolutionarily conserved enzymes, RNase H1 and H2. Indeed, RNase H-deficient cells have increased chromosomal rearrangements. However, the quantitative and spatial contributions of the individual enzymes to hybrid removal have been unclear. Additionally, RNase H2 can remove single ribonucleotides misincorporated into DNA during replication. The relative contribution of DNA:RNA hybrids and misincorporated ribonucleotides to chromosome instability also was uncertain. To address these issues, we studied the frequency and location of loss-of-heterozygosity (LOH) events on chromosome III in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains that were defective for RNase H1, H2, or both. We showed that RNase H2 plays the major role in preventing chromosome III instability through its hybrid-removal activity. Furthermore, RNase H2 acts pervasively at many hybrids along the chromosome. In contrast, RNase H1 acts to prevent LOH within a small region of chromosome III where the instability is dependent upon two hybrid-prone sequences. This restriction of RNase H1 activity to a subset of hybrids is not the result of its constrained localization, because we found it at hybrids genome-wide. This result suggests that the genome-protection activity of RNase H1 is regulated at a step after hybrid recognition. The global function of RNase H2 and the region-specific function of RNase H1 provide insight into why these enzymes with overlapping hybrid-removal activities have been conserved throughout evolution.

Abstract:
The optimum allocation of breeding resources is crucial for the efficiency of breeding programmes. The objectives were to (i) compare selection gain ΔGk for finite and infinite sample sizes, (ii) compare ΔGk and the probability of identifying superior hybrids (Pk), and (iii) determine the optimum allocation of the number of hybrids and test locations in hybrid maize breeding using doubled haploids. Infinite compared to finite sample sizes led to almost identical optimum allocation of test resources, but to an inflation of ΔGk. This inflation decreased as the budget and the number of finally selected hybrids increased. A reasonable Pk was reached for hybrids belonging to the q = 1% best of the population. The optimum allocations for Pk(q) and ΔGkwere similar, indicating that Pk(q) is promising for optimizing breeding programmes.
