Abstract:
This master thesis is a design study of LED interior light units. Aim of the study is to design set of three luminaire types – office table light, standard lamp and a pendant luminaire. All three lights are following the same design. Curve is the main shape for this light set. LED, called light source of the future, is supposed to be the only light source at all three units. LEDs were chosen as the contemporary most efficient and modern light source. Use of LEDs has many positive economical and social aspects. Use of innovative design, most recent technologies and modern shapes brings new inspiration and variety into current interior light world. Development of light systems study is mapping light units history from the beginning into presence. It brings interesting look into interior light history.

Abstract:
Evar är ett examensarbete, om 22,5 HP individuellt utfört av André Runling under våren 2012 vid Karlstads universitet, till högskoleingenjörsprogrammet i innovationsteknik och design. Uppdragsgivare för projektet har varit Johan Larsvall, industridesigner och ägare av Idesign i Stockholm. Handledare på Karlstads universitet har varit Lennart Wihk, industridesigner och universitetsadjunkt. Examinator har varit Fredrik Thuvander, professor och universitetslektor. Idesign är en designbyrå med kontor på Långholmen i centrala Stockholm och har uppdrag för olika företag inom olika branscher, bland annat Silva Sweden AB och myndigheten Trafikverket. Idesign har Trafikverkets uppdrag att komma med förslag på koncept till cykelbelysning för ökad användning och tillförlitlighet mot dagens användning. Projektet har initierats av Trafikverket och Idesign skall stå för utvecklingen av en belysning åt Silva. Silva har specialiserat sig på pannlampor i många år och ser en möjlighet att nå en ny marknad av cykelbelysning med samarbetet, vilket föranledde detta examensarbete och en utvecklingsprocess mot Idesign i första hand. Projektets första del gick ut på att undersöka vad som brister med dagens cykelbelysning och varför den inte används i så stor utsträckning. Undersökningen gjordes i form av enkäter och diskussioner på svenska forum på internet. En stor del av projektet innebar att jämföra varför användningen ser annorlunda ut och används oftare i Danmark och även Tyskland. Tyskland har ett detaljerat typgodkännande av cykelbelysning i trafikförordningen som behövde tydas. Med hjälp av den insamlade informationen påbörjades en utveckling av ett koncept till en belysning med idégenerering och kravspecifikation som sedan skulle utvärderas med matriser. Med ett mål och tanke om att den den skall andas enkelhet och tilltala en person som pendlar på cykel. Av de tre koncept som presenterades för Idesign valdes ett koncept ut för vidare bearbetning som utvecklades till ett slutligt förslag och beskrivning på en cykelbelysning. Det förslag som utvecklades innebär att lampan fram blir batteridriven som meddelar med en batteriindikator när den bör laddas, direkt i ett eluttag. Med ett enkelt handgrepp ansluts den i ett fäste på cykeln som i sin tur är ett spänne som monteras fast steglöst på cykeln med en rem. Det innebär att den kan monteras på vilken cykel som helst. Medan lampan bak är tänkt att alltid sitta på, ha samma typ av montering och ha automatisk på- och avslagning via en ljus- och rörelsedetektor. Den har fortfarande en batteriindikator för att se när batterier bör bytas. Både fram och baklampan är utrustade med LED-belysning.
Evar is a project degree of 22,5 ECTS credits individually carried out by André Runling during the spring of 2012 at Karlstad University, for a bachelor degree in Innovation technique and Design engineering. The assigner for this project is Johan Larsvall, industrial designer and owner of Idesign in Stockholm. Academic supervisor at Karlstad University has been Lennart Wihk, industrial designer and university lecturer. Examiner has been Fredrik Thuvander, professor and university lecturer. Idesign is a design agency with office on Longholmen in central of Stockholm and is assigned by different companies in different sectors such as, Silva Sweden AB and Trafikverket. Idesign got the task from Trafikverket to make suggestions to concepts of bike lights that increase the use and reliability compared to todays use. The project was initiated by Trafikverket while Idesign were responsible of developing a bike light to Silva. Silva has specialised themselves in head lamps for many years and have seen an opportunity to reach a new market with the collaboration, which resulted in this degree project and development primary to Idesign. The projects first part was to study what is inadequate in today's lighting and why it is not used as much as it should. The study was conducted with a poll and discussions on Swedish forums on the internet. A large part of the project was to compare why the usage looks different and is used more often in Denmark, and also Germany. Germany has a detailed approval of bicycle lights in their traffic regulations which was needed to be interpreted. Using the information gathered, a development of concepts started to a bicycle light that exudes simplicity and appeal to a commuting cyclist, with the idea generation method and product specification which was evaluated in a matrix. Of three concepts that were presented to Idesign, one concept was selected for further processing which developed into a final proposal and description of a bicycle light. The final solution means that the head lamp is powered by a battery, and notifies with a battery indicator when it needs charging, directly into a electrical outlet. With a simple single-hand grip it’s connected in the bracket and, in its turn a buckle, which is mounted steplessly on the bicycle by a strap. It means it can be mounted on any bicycle. While the rear light is supposed to always sit on, have the same type of installation and have an automatic on and off switch via a light and motion detector. It still has a battery indicator to se when batteries should be replaced. Both the front and the rear light is equipped with LED for lighting.

Abstract:
This report focuses on the design of an LED-based solar simulator, which is widely used in testing Photovoltaic (PV) panels and other products. In recent years, solar power was used in almost every industry, such as Photovoltaic systems installed on the rooftops for residential, small level commercial, public lighting systems and large-scale Photovoltaic power generation. Government launches incentives policies, awareness of environmental issues, plus the lower consumer prices promoted the solar energy uses. However, due to limitations of present technology, efficiency of Photovoltaic systems is unsaturated. Even if there is a small increase in the efficiency, there will be a significant growth for the total energy. Therefore, testing the efficiency and checking the quality of Photovoltaic panel is an extremely important step. The aim of the project is to understand how to make a LED-based solar simulator, with high intensity, can be continuously operated and is expected to meet the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard: IEC 60904-9. Moreover, the personal motivation for making the LED-based solar simulator is the conviction that solar power is a cleaner, safer and environmental friendly energy. Under laboratory conditions, the solar simulator provides a controllable indoor test facility for testing the PV panels and modules by continuously supporting illumination which is similar to natural sunlight (AM1.5g as defined in ASTM G173-03 standard was used for comparison). The comparison is mainly focused on the range of 360nm to 700nm wavelength. The high intensity LEDs used in this project have wavelengths: 380-390 nm, 400-410 nm, 460-475 nm, 520-535 nm, 584-596 nm, 619-624 nm, 700 nm and IR LEDs. The reason of another IR LEDs used in this project is for expanding the application, it could test other products, not only for PV panels. In addition, the characteristics of the solar simulator is compared with the standard IEC 60904-9.

In this study, a LED spot measurement unit is designed to replace the conventional unit using lever-type spring inspection mechanism. Weight precision Accuracy of the current measurement unit is not qualified. Pattern error reaches up to 80% while adjusting by labor work so that cannot satisfy the requirement of high precision. Therefore, it is proposed to utilize automatic measurement and feedback control method to enhance the accuracy. This article takes probing equipment function of LED industry as an example to discuss designed probing device. It consists of strain gauge selection, mechanism design environment, simulation analysis via ANSYS, experimental test and using linear regression to analyze experimental data to find linear relationship between input force and output voltage. To apply the inspected result practically, the error can be decreased significantly for reaching below 10% precision of initial stage default target.

Most LED available currently are either round or square in the market, there are hardly made in oval shape. This study attempted to apply experimental methods to arrange the oval LED chip arrays, and to adjust the spacing between chips by optical simulation software ”LightTools”, as well as to simulate the illumination and uniformity. After the collection of data, “Design-Expert” was used to proceed the statistical analysis and to identify the significant variable factors. Then, “Design-Expert” was again adopted to perform the analysis of variances and to deduce the best combination of reaction equations and variable factors with the software. Finally, the combination of variable factors suggested by software was used to establish a new model that would be proceeded the ray tracing by “LightTools” again. The differences between validate data and the optimized values were observed and compared, so that they could be used as the design reference of the spacing between oval LED chips.

A LED spectrometer has been constructed for qualitative spectrometry using certain wavelenghts. The LEDs and the photodiode are being controlled with a microcontroller that is connected to a computer to power the components and save data. The spectroanalysis made with the LED spectrometer were significantly different to a standard spectrometer, concluding that more analysis should be made until a final product is ready. Some areas of improvements are suggested.

Since light emitting diode (LED) has the characteristic of directional property, it is not suitable to be directly applied to general lighting systems, otherwise, it will cause the phenomenon of uneven illumination. Thus, a secondary optics is required to achieve uniform illumination. In this thesis, an LED illumination module design is presented based on the concept of the candle power distribution curve. Therefore, the wanted distribution can be implemented with an appropriately designed reflector and a high-power LED so that the goal to achieve uniform illumination distribution and to conform to the CNS (National Standards of the Republic of China) standard can be obtained on the target plane. This lighting module is designed using the TracePro software, and the influence of the arrayed LED illumination modules on the whole target plane is also explored with the same software. Finally, the optimal LED illumination-module array can be determined to produce the intensity distribution conformed to the CNS standard, and hence the loss of energy can be reduced effectively. The optic simulation result shows that the optical efficiencies of the various illumination-module arrays in this the thesis can achieve 96%, and the uniformity of illumination is up to 0.7.

This thesis presents a lens designed with a freeform-surface approach. The primary function of the lens is to let the light rays emitted from the LED (Light-Emitting Diode) source uniformly illuminate the target plane and thus to make up a lighting module for general indoor lighting application. The outmost layer of the lens is a reflective freeform surface which can reflect light rays with a larger angle to the axis and cross through the front outer plane of the lens by refraction. The front central part of the lens is a convex optical surface that can directly refract light rays which are close to the axis. Furthermore, there are some light rays having an angle to the axis between the above angles will first experience a total internal reflection by the front outer plane, and then be reflected to the air by the freeform surface. Consequently, the light rays of the LED light source are evenly redistributed to produce uniform lighting through the above arrangement. In addition, the rear end of the lens, which is facing the light source, is dug inward with a concave surface to let light rays from the LED enter the lens straightforwardly. Other than the introduction of the design concept and procedure of the integrated lens in this thesis, the construction for each optical surface, particularly the freeform surface, will also be introduced. Finally, the lens is constructed with a 3D program, and a ray-tracing based on one tenth million light rays is carried out. The computer simulation result shows that if the emitting area of the LED is , the measured optical efficiency is 96.23% while the illuminance uniformity is 0.89 on a target plane of 10-m diameter and at 2.5-m away.

At present, all design of communication systems, digital camera, camcorder and projector et cetera were requested with the smallest volume, convenient and carry-on product. It would be best that a machine including multi function such as communication, photograph,and video, broadcast and share with friends. Since many years the mobile device has made much progress in size. Similarly the size of projector devices is demanded smaller from mini,pocket to Pico size which is significant to integrate into mobile device and other 3C product. As this requisition, we need to think about not only the size but also the power consumption of all key parts at first priority when designing the projector device. In this thesis, for the light source we used the Red, Green and Blue LED with collimator to replace the conventional lamp, reflector and color wheel due to LED light source is the low power consumption, do not need to cool down with fan when the users turn on and off and reduce the size of the light source system. For illumination system we used lens array to take the place of Rod for reduces the total track of illumination system and to get high uniformity above 82%. For light separator, we use a new type TIR prism design which combines the projection lens and illumination system to decrease the volume and improve thecontrast of the projector.For the projection system, we used 8 elements such as 6 Spherical lenses and 2 Aspherical lenses to design the telecentric lens with 52 mm of the total track and do the evaluation and analyze the tolerance of the lenses with Code V optical software. Finally we use the ASAP optical software to simulate the system of the power efficiency and uniformity.

LLC resonant converter is regarded as a promising future power conversion topology because of its outstanding characteristics such as high efficiency and low EMI noise. However, the designing procedure is complicated and the manufacturing is challenging. In this thesis, the operation of LLC resonant converter is investigated and a designing process of it using LED as output loading is proposed. In addition, the effect of the variation of each main component in this converter is thoroughly analyzed, and the selections of them are discussed, too. The designing method and the manufacturing process of integrated transformer are also proposed. A constant voltage and constant current control 100 kHz and 20W LLC resonant LED driver is designed and realized to verify the proposed method.

This study is to design a lens system for LED light source using Geomerical Optics. The design composes at least two sets of Red Blue LEDs which stands as one pixel for a single viewing point. The light patch of the viewing point object can be divided into two separate beams through the lenticular array -lens structure by refraction to both eyes. Thus generats the three-dimensional effect. The methodology focused on the basic theory of three-dimensional effect based on the lens array. The best position of the three-dimensional effect can be simulated by ray tracing using LightTools and Zemax software. Thus obtains the parameters of those related lens constructions. The technology can be expected to use widely in large scale display systems in the near future.

The purpose of this thesis is focus on designing a driver and controller for LED Circuit. The main components are a flyback converter, PWM controller, and fine tuning regulator to drive the LED light. The key points are to drive the LED circuit by using the flyback converter, and to adjust the brightness of the LED light by changing the forward current of PWM controller output. Moreover, the method to design a driver to run LED circuit is the operational principle, analysis, and structure of design. Finally, in this thesis includes the collected data from the measurement of waveform to prove the feasibility and performance of the forward LED circuit.

In this thesis, we use the optical simulation software – TracePro to design aspheric lens for fog lights. A LED light source projected on the screen in front of 25 meters is defined to perform aspheric lens design parameters and simulation. Analysis of projection light pattern is required by the front fog lamps regulation of ECE R19. The material of aspherical lens is assumed to be optical acrylic (PMMA) or plexiglass and lens is designed by composed of the multifocal aspheric. According to the principle of total reflection, the divergent light emitted from the LED through the lens can be collimated. LUXEON Z ES (3W white LED) made by Lumileds is used as light source. when the drive current is 700mA , the total luminous flux is up to 200 lumen. The optimization was achieved by tuning lens rotation, size and angle. Resulted illumination at 25 meters is complied with ECE R19 standard and the brightest area is over 1.5lux. Size of the final design result is 40 * 43 * 38mm. Keywords:LED、Front fog lamp

Currently vehicles still adopt incandescent lamps, halogen lamps, and HID as their major lighting sources. But at international auto exhibitions, we may find auto makers have already mounted LED lamps on their concept cars for demonstration in order to draw consumers’ eye. As a result, this study designed an Economic Commission for Europe Regulation 19-conforming front fog lamp using LED as a light source. The reflector had a curve surface with different upper and lower curvatures. The two sides of the curve surface with different upper and lower curvatures demonstrated an outward-leaning angle of 8 degrees with the lamp opening. The purpose was to control the distribution length of the light. The curve surface was designed with different upper and lower curvatures in that the upper curve surface was to reflect the upward-emitting beam downward, and that the lower curve surface was to translate, through reflection, the downward-emitting beam into a parallel one, by adapting the light which originally concentrated on the center to a light which concentrated below the horizontal line. However, some emitted light still could not be completely gathered through the reflection cover. For this reason, through a lens with different upper and lower curvatures, the emitted light which originally could not be collected was effectively collected for use to increase the utility of the light source. As advance technology develops, increased energy consumption as a result of increased lighting use has become evident. Market-sold incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lights are challenged for their inability to reduce light-energy consumption and global-energy insufficiency. Developing a more eco-friendly and energy-saving lighting technology should therefore be implemented. The use of white-light lighting emitting diode (LED) comprises high efficiency, low energy-cost and long-life qualities, in term, reduce production of eco-damage. Within illumination design, optical design is important. Comprehensive understanding of lighting source and distribution, were obtained through luminous quantity experiments, and with other optical elements to develop a more accurate light source stimulation analysis. This thesis develops an array of LED chip display design: where LED intensity of light source was used to acquire light distribution was first obtained, followed by stimulated light distribution with computer assist optical software. Comparability was made with regard to previous literatures to acquire optimal lighting design.

To improve the previous generation of LED fish lamp driver output as constant voltage. The problem is that the lamp driver will vary greatly and the driver will be bulky and heavy (> 15 kg).This study is to investigate and develop the design of high power compact LED projection lamps which are with the needs in constant current output. The mechanism is water cooling and the drive model is constant current. When several of the lighting fixtures are malfunctioned, the driver can instantly respond in current down-load to protect them so that the constant current overload will have the chance not damage or decay the LED. This research developed 6000W LED drivers using water-cooled cooling and special circuit design, make the product look Volume 370 mm x 216 mm x 152 mm with weight of about 13kg.This product (10 parallel combinations into 6500W drives)is compared to single drive with the highest specification( volume 280 mm x 144 mm x 48.5 mm and weight 3.9 kg)for outdoor use in Today''s domestic LED driver factory -Meanwell is 1/2 smaller and weighs only 1/3. The design of LED fish lamp driver in this study includes Programmable constant current circuit. LED fish lamp can adjust the setting of the output current according to the needs of the number of Parallel lamps. The product simply adjusts four rotary switches, the shipping with full testing. It reduces inventory pressure for each model. The LED fish lamp driver in this study has been mass produced successfully. The LED fish lamp driver installed on more than a dozen fishing boats and it has been used for over a year. No major exception occurred on the LED fish lamp driver

ABSTRACT In the carbon reduction of environmental consensus, unlike the traditional backlighting elements (such as CCFL), the lower power consumption of the LED has become a new generation of LCD TV backlight trend. Compared to the application of monitor, TV as a larger size, they need more strings of the LED backlight modules to achieve the required brightness of the LED control and on it’s multi-serial LED strings. The first problem is the current imbalances will be encountered among LED strings. The imbalance will cause the serial current uneven brightness, and thus the image quality. How to reach a balance under the given cost and getting the current balance among the LED strings, will be a challenge to for LED driver designers. Conventional AC load multiple drivers [ such as CCFL, EEFL ( External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp ), etc. ] often connected passive components in each group sharing the loads among AC power input, so one can achieve multiple AC load flow with current balance. This thesis proposes a lower power loss and cheaper method LED driver module for a typical 60” LED TV. For balancing the multiple LED strings, the LCD-TV LED driver circuit prototype design with passive components used in the DC load current connection. In addition, the circuit outputs data and waveforms were also measured. The AC power connecting with a rectifier can provide the DC power for the DC loads. By the connection of passive components, it will get the current balance among the DC loads. This thesis uses a LLC resonant converter design integrated with "A power supply with a H- balance LED driver for the multiple DC loads." The main purpose of the new power module for LED driver is to provide a cheaper and also efficient power supply circuit for current balance. Different from the traditional with linear structure, the new design can have current balance in each group of DC loads and the same brightness, the lower power consumption and high efficiency. The new design has relatively few components and low complexity, and substantial cost savings. With the actual measurements, we will measure and evaluate the performance of the new LED driver design with current balance circuits.

With Fly-back converter to be a AC to DC power supply and get the fixed voltage (12V) by pulse width modulation (PWM) of current feedback mode, then adopt the Boost converter to arise the voltage. Depend on feedback of LED arrays and generate the driver voltage. In order to reduce the luminance difference between each LED, this makes stable current of LED arrays by current mirror. And using the dynamic select function let LED arrays light at the same. The feature of this circuit is module design that applies various LED backlight models and generates the applicable voltage and stable current then achieve the common-design purpose.

The current global energy crisis are faced with the problem of global warming. Therefore, the development of green energy has become the most important issue. Lighting in daily life, whether in the office, school, home, etc., they are all required. However, the traditional lighting regardless of the day or night, lights are required to fully open or fully closed. Thus, when sufficient daylight source, Open excessive lighting will result in energy consumption and increase the burden on electricity. In this thesis, the lighting regulations in many countries of the word are used as a reference standard.The home and the office for example, to illustrate the application of LED lights. The light illumination meter and the voltage of the lighting sensor input the signal into the A/D converter are mapping each other. We using the curve fitting method to find the equation that mapping the sensor voltage and illumination. The chip 8051 reads the values from the sensor voltage to determine whether the illumination light source satisfied with the regulations, then to control how much light to be turned on, that is combined with the use of sun light and LED light source in order to achieve (1) Sufficient light during the day, avoid opening too many lamps to reduce energy waste. (2) The lighting specification is satisfied even reducing the lamp lighting. (3)The traditional way of lighting be improved and save electricity expenditure.

This study is to implement the design of high efficiency solar energy chip, and LED controller and driver. In the former, we first analyze the principium of solar cell and photo feature. We design this solar cell with VLSI technology, and to increase its power conversion efficiency with existed process. The efficiency can be up to 26% in simulations. In the latter, we implement the LED controller with photo sensor for auto lighting on/off. The main techniques are composed of photo sensor, amplifier, the digital control circuit and comparator circuit. Also, the LED driver with MOS circuit is design on chip. This can be applied on street light or lighting automatic control. To adjust the lighting density, the digital PWM (pulse width modulation) circuit is designed. The duty cycle is controller by digital circuit to achieve the function of PWM circuit, and to controls LED driver. We can apply this technique well to lighting and back light module.

Using the LED Print Head for exposure structure inside the Photographic Printer has three benefits: First, it can make the volume of the printer smaller; second, it can make the printer more reliable; last, it can decrease the capital of the printer. But this kind of skill is always controlled by Japanese. To adapt the demand in internal market, this thesis designed a driver IC for LED Print Head. The driver IC adopts a skill of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) which uses 4-bits digital signal to produce 16 kinds of pulse width under a fixed current. The thesis also designs a Dynamic Pulse Width circuit to make pulse width more variable. In CMOS process, the process will make each IC different. In order to solve this problem, the thesis provides two compensation circuits to compensate the difference between ICs. One is the Pulse Start-Limited circuit which is used to limit the start time of the pulse; the other is the Reference Current Control circuit which is used to adjust the reference current of the current mirror. The range of each adjustable reference current step is 0.1mA. As for the difference between each LED in the LED array itself, the thesis brings up a way to solve this problem. The way is adopting an Output Current Control circuit which can make some adjust in each LED drive current. The range of each adjustable output current step is 0.05mA. As to the problem of power consumption, the thesis also provides two solutions: One is Multi-Chip Segment Exposure, the other is Single-Chip Segment Exposure, both two can decrease the transient large current and the transient power consumption. The whole chip was completed by 0.5um 2M1P CMOS process. After testing, the drive chip can really work well.

This thesis is aimed to improve the traditional fiber-guided LED (Light-Emitting Diode) vehicle headlamp so that the integrated headlamp volume can be reduced and the total optical output efficiency can be increased. Basically this headlamp is composed of four modules, which consist of a LED, a condenser lens, a light pipe, a CPC (Compound Parabolic Concentrator), an optical fiber, an opening trough, and an aspherical lens. The feature of the module is the use of the coupler, which is made up with the condenser lens, the light pipe, and the CPC, to collect the light rays emitted from the LED light source to the fiber and then through the fiber to the trough whose opening has the same profile as the light pattern of the headlamp. Finally, a light pattern is projected through the aspherical lens. Since the efficiency of the coupler of the proposed headlamp module is greater than that of the traditional one only using a single light pipe, ellipsoidal or parabolic reflector, and the apertures of the fiber, the trough, and the projecting lens are also smaller; therefore, not only the volume and material can be reduced but the total optical efficiency can be increased. The computer simulation result shows that only four headlamp modules are required to meet the light pattern and the illumination distribution regulated by the ECE (Economic Commission for Europe) if single LED of 267 lm is employed. Also, the total optical efficiency of the headlamp achieves 70%.

This thesis conferring LED that operates in full power and nature convection circumstance. By changing the different arrangements, we hope to improve its performance, less junction temperature increase and less influence on total luminous flux. If possible, we hope to decrease the number of LED, and still maintain its own regulation specifications, achieving the purpose of energy saving, extending its life and cost down. The method for analysis is using datasheet on internet which is supplied by LED manufacturers. The datasheet has to include three important parameters that relate to thermal, electrical, and optical properties, and its optical spectrum distribution diagram. The three parameters is TSP (it is a coefficient which stands for the relationship of thermal-electrical coupling), the decline curve illustration that describes the increase of temperature, and the decrease of luminous flux, and the directly proportional coefficient to the red shift of dominant wavelength when the temperature is increasing. After finishing thermal-electrical coupling iterations till convergence, one can get the reduction of luminous flux and the change of mixing color that represent by correlated color temperature Hoping this analysis method of LED arrangement will achieve the aim of cost down by decreasing the number of LED. With simulation and programming, we can obtain the result that under such difficult conditions, if we can decrease 3W LED from 15 to 14 by pulling up the lager distance of structure(for example: from 0.5cm, 1cm to more than 3cm, like 4.5cm,7cm, or 10cm). Also we hope this method which can find out the limit of number decreasing and the distance it should has would apply to illumination which owns more power or fewer heat dissipation area.

As the fast growing of today’s portable consumer electronics, the reduction of power consumption or improvement of power efficiency has become an important subject for the power IC designer. This thesis presents the design and implementation of efficient white LED driver. This white LED driver includes a switched-capacitor voltage converter, high PSRR low dropout linear regulator and a brightness control circuit. Since the switched-capacitor contains three types of fractional gain to boost the supply voltage, the lifetime of battery can be extended. Moreover, a technique of clock boosting is utilized to alleviate the charge loss in the duration of switching for the switched-capacitor circuit and then the power efficiency can be improved. The high PSRR low dropout linear regulator is designed to inhibit the noise from the output of switched-capacitor voltage converter and regulate the output voltage of white LED driver. Therefore, the output ripple voltage can be reduced significantly. The brightness control circuit is used to adjust the forward current of each LED by setting the external resistors and control signal. The overall circuits included in the white LED driver are simulated by tsmc 2P4M 0.35μm 5V CMOS process. The white LED driver provides the topology of parallel connection for each LED, which has the maximum current rating 20mA at its forward voltage 3.6V. The amount of connected LEDs is flexible for different applications and the maximum is five.

In the headlamp-design market, there are two main design-approaches, that is, the reflecting- and the projecting-method. In this research, both methods are utilized to design and theoretically analyze the headlamp. The light pattern of the reflecting headlamp is generally adjusted based on a reflector, which can be a parabolic- or an elliptical-surface. However, in this thesis, only the property of the parabolic reflector is numerically analyzed, and then an optic simulation software, the TracePro is used to imitate the LED light source and to engage in an optimum headlamp-design. In the projecting headlamp-design, the main optic design and analysis software is also the TracePro; however, in the projecting lens part, an aspheric lens is designed by using the ZEMAX optic simulation software. The lens-design result is then transferred to fit the TracePro to engage in an advanced simulation and analysis. In the arrangement of LEDs, each LED is designed to be a module, and then is arranged to be an array. In the mean while, the number of the modules is estimated so that the illumination of the headlamp can satisfy the regulation. With the development of contemporary technology, the lighting has been widely used in people’s lives. Lighting is gradually increased to consume the energy of use every year. The current commercial available lighting are mostly incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes which are high energy consumption. Thus, to investigate an energy saving and environment friendly lighting devices is became necessarily. High-brightness light-emitted diodes (LED's) with the characteristics of high efficiency and low power consumption resulted less environmental impact will be on their application in the lighting devices.   Although the LED has many advantages, used in lighting feature has been widely recognized. But in comparison to traditional light optical design has a great difference, it cannot be directly substituted. To retrofit original system is needed in order to match the optical system, to meet the standard optical light distribution, and their applications. LED lighting modules design not only can improve the utilization rate of LED luminous flux but also can comply with the industrial regulations or living needs.   Lighting design is the most important technique in optical designs. The need to understand the light source, and to obtain their lighting distribution data. Therefore, the data can be applied in the optical design software to create model and to generate the simulation light source. To add secondary optics components, they will conduct ray tracing simulation analysis, so that it can obtain accurate simulation results.   In this study, LED light source intensity was measured for light source of light. Using TracePro optical design software creates the simulated light source, and confirm simulated light source with the experimental results. The optical software was used to optimum the optical design; thus, the high-speed bus cabin lighting and parking lights lamps are conducting secondary optical simulation. Finally, the LED lighting module is succeeded to replace traditional lighting sources in this study.

This study is on design of LED for street lighting. Because of energy-saving considerations, the power consumption on design of street lighting is limited to be 36 watts, the installation of light is of 6-meters height, and the minimal average luminance is 15 lux. In this study, Solidworks 3D graphics software is used to design the scale of the street light and the results of the design are imported into TracePro for further optical simulation analysis. This study considers the issues of energy saving and environmental protection. Moreover, the lighting luminance must be higher than 15 lux, with uniformity of less than 3 to achieve good visual quality. Four parameters which dominate the output of the lighting intensity and distribution are investigated for an optimal design. The parameters include the tilt angle of light, light source arrangement, thickness of light reflector, and the size of reflector opening.

In the demand of the future display, wide screen size, full digitalization and high definition are the most crucial requirements. Liquid crystal device (LCD) display undoubtedly may be taken as one of the potential candidate owing to its extra high resolution and pure digitalization and moreover, it might be the most competitive since it is of thin, light and high brightness. The present LCD displays commonly utilize the Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) as the light source, however due to the luminant characteristic of phosphor the chromatic range where the display can show is smaller than that of CRT display. And also, it will be an eco-threat whenever in the phase of manufacturing and recycling since mercury is not avoidable in fabrication of CCFL. Altering the light source to light emitting device (LED) is a good solution to enhance the color range to the level of CRT display, or moreover, better than CRT display. In this thesis, we concentrated on the design of back-light module with LEDs. To achieve a better uniformity of illumination and color mixing quality, an optical element was designed to shape emitting field of the Lambertian LED to side-emitting distribution and on the basis of the modification of emitting field of light source, the correlation between the optical performances on the exit surface of back-light module, including uniformity and chromatic mixing quality, and the design parameters, such as the locations of LEDs and the relative density corresponding to different sizes were explored. Consequently, the optimal design parameters were obtained. In the further analysis of tolerance, we studied the bearing capability of the proposed design under the assumption of specified devices malfunctioned. We also designed an optical element being able to reshape the emitting field from Lambertian distribution to side-emitting with the assistance of OSLO and built the complete model of back-light model in TracePro and furthermore, simulated it. We have obtained the uniformity about 92% within whole exit surface of back-light module in which good color mixing quality and great tolerance have been verified by numerical simulations.

Recently, light-emitting diodes(LEDs) have become more and more attractive and have great opportunity to replace traditional lighting sources such as incandescent, fluorescent and HID because of the advantages such as high luminous efficacy, long lifetime, quick on/off time, wide color gamut, eco-friendly etc. In automobile industry, LED lighting is used very frequently due to reliable and efficient nature. This paper focuses on design of a driver for LED with nonlinear I-V characteristic curve. The driver design is improved for increasing the LED life while driven by constant current. This paper includes the mathematical calculations for the design according to automotive industry standards. Furthermore, circuit design was simulated and fine-tuned using MultiSIM. As this driver is designed for automobile use, EMI effects are considered during design process. Furthermore, the circuit was then analyzed against ISO7637 electromagnetic compatibility standards. The simulation data confirms that proposed design is ready for automotive applications. A prototype was also created as a proof of concept to confirm the simulation data.

Four design methods by the direct lighting ,the symmetrical reflector ,the asymmetrical reflector, and the semi-reflector are adopted for the optical design. LED including various radiation patterns are, Nichia ( θ1/10 = 20∘ ), Snap LED(type HPSW-Fx & HPSW-Tx, θ1/10= 30∘ & 60∘ ), Batwing ( θ1/10 = 75∘ ), Lambertian ( θ1/10 = 90∘ ), Side Emitting ( θ1/10 = 120∘ ). By the way, its control circuit is more easily achieved. The design of a digital dimmable high-power UV LED is focused on this thesis. AC to DC, BUCK constant current dimming driving part, and digital dimming control circuit are also included in this thesis. This thesis explains why the step-down constant current DC/DC is used for getting a stable UV LEDs' power control, and explains that how to generate a series of pulses with width modulation by using an SoC. The modulated pulses are transmitted to the UV LED driver’s input, then adjusting the current of UV LEDs to achieve UV LEDs' power control.

In this paper, we proposed and designed the lens for light emitting diode (LED) street lights by optical designing software Trace Pro which provided a platform for us to comprehend how the rays go forward through lens and roadway simulation software dialux, where dialux software is used to assess the average dialux lighting and uniformity. Many LED street lamps used matrix array, which has many disadvantage like circuit design problems. We used multi-chip on lead frame, that is, single module high power LED (140W) package design, which can reduce size of streetlight, lessen the complexity for lens'' designing and reduce cost. We probe three kinds of lens to compare the light intensity far field angle and illumination. With the basis of optical design and LED lights can achieve high output efficiency until 0.857; high uniformity from 0.587 to 0.753, the average illumination from 19 lx to 21 lx and approach of batwing far field beam angle distribution can be achieved.

Light-emitting-diode(LED) compared with traditional fluorescent tube has many advantages, such as high reliahility, longer using time, small power consumption, and so on. Hence,LED has the most promising potential for future solid-state lighting. This thesis estimated the LED lighting replacement in the interior space. Thus, the author mainly uses Computer aided design (CAD) software was used to accomplish this task accurately&effectively. In space lighting design, optimal number of lamps should be decided to achieve the best brightness. Using the manufacturers’ specification of various lighting models, we can achieve the desired lighting requirements designed by the software. According the Much time and money can be saved without field test. Then in accordance with domestic and international lighting standards, the performance of existing fluorescent and LED lightings can be compared to access their effectiveness.

In this study, in order to conform to German StVZO 22A NO.23 standard, we use the optical program LightTools to create a LED illuminant and simulating with paraboloid-reflector. During the processing, we use optimization function of LightTools with variable adjustment. After simulating, we found that it couldn’t confirm to the standard when only used paraboloid-reflector. Regarding of this, we change the paraboloid-reflector into multi-reflector; therefore, we can adjust the section of reflector individually to make the illuminance to reach the demand. Finally, in order to restrain the over-heighted illuminance we add the structure of baffles for the two sides of model, and make the illuminance distribution to conform to German StVZO 22A NO.23 standard successfully. We analyze the structure of bike lights by Taguchi Method, and using the Visual Basic program to write a program in order to assist the processing of experiment. This program could link up with LightTools, and make the whole process auto-operating. It could open the bike lights file in LightTools, determine the factor group by Orthogonal Array to revise the parameter of structure, and run simulation experiment by itself. What we do could not only decrease the cost of time and human source but raise the work efficiency. After finishing the experiment, we analyze the result and get the best parameter group of structure, and we compare the difference between original and best structure, to set the same tolerance for both of them, and rewrite the previous program of Visual Basic. Moreover, in the range of set tolerance we use the program doing random sampling to revise the parameter group of structure for simulating the real condition of producing in the factory. By doing the 100 sets experiment of original and best structure, original ones have 30 sets not fit the rule of illuminance distribution, on the other hand, the best ones only have 7 sets. To the result, Taguchi Method does raise the reliable of products obviously.

In this thesis, a controllable、multiple、 and high performance LED Backlight has been implemented by mean of high-efficiency white LED device. The gradually shade effect has been demonstrated by the stepwise command of circuits, witch results in stereoscopic, vivid-image of objects in human vision. The fly-back power converter and power factor correction IC controller were used in the circuit to enhance the feasibility in power factor of circuit, and depression of the harmonics. And results in the zero phase difference between the input current and voltage. By using the multiple-series connection of four switches on LED, the annular light source is divided to the four illumination domains. Therefore, the turning of light source becomes easier by accompany of the cost saving. Besides, the circuit architectures and operational concepts have been designed and tested the prototype annular LED light source. Based upon the practical specifications of street illumination, we design the secondary optical elements so that the LED illumination can be transformed into a uniform illumination on the road to meet the street illumination standards. Generally, LED light intensity distribution is Lambertian, however, the geometry of the road area are rectangular. Therefore, traditionally symmetric design of an original LED lens can only produce uniform illumination on a circular area. A major portion of light will fall outside the street and will results in unnecessary power consumption, environmental light pollution, the glare issues, and even traffic accidents, etc. Consequently, the lens design should be asymmetric in order that the emitted light can be distributed uniformly in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the driving direction and thus can achieve uniform illumination within the rectangular area of the road. In this thesis, free-form lens and reflector are developed to create a batwing light intensity distribution in the direction parallel to the driving direction and asymmetrical intensity distribution in perpendicular direction to create a rectangular light pattern and achieve high efficiency of uniform illumination. Finally, our simulations validate their compliance with the street lighting specifications.

Halogen lamps are mostly applied as a light source to the traditional lamp for medical treatment due to its proper color temperature, but it has its disadvantages such as ultraviolet rays and infrared rays which will be harmful to the patients and faculties in the hospitals under long-term exposure. Consequently, using light emitting diode(LED) as a new light source instead of the traditional halogen lamp will be the trend of the future. The purpose of this study is to design a projective LED dental lamp that can achieve the goals of 200mm×100mm for light shape and 11000lux illuminance energy by using the optics simulation software, LightTools. Firstly, a single LED lamp module with a high focusing hollow tubular light guide structure was designed and developed comparing with the solid light guide structure used in many commercial projective dental lamp, the hollow tubular light guide structure can decrease illuminance energy lose due to the absorption by tube material. Because the required objective light shape could not be achieved by using the designed light guide structure only, so a lens component was adopted and designed in order to shrink the output light shape to the required size. Finally, through the specific arrangement of position and angle of each LED lamp module, a projective LED dental lamp with 9 LEDs lamp modules which conform with the required illuminance energy was proposed.

The frame is the rack of the chips as well as the transportation medium for the inner electrics to the board. Taiwan suppliers of SMD LED frame share the world make about 18~21%. The usage of LED spread, LED supplier expanded the factory accordingly, the newer should face big challenge. Herewith the research for taking place of PPA plastic as the SMD LED reflector by Epoxy which is high temperature resistance & Good resistance to ultraviolet radiation intensity. It can increase the power from 0.5w to 0.7~2.0W. Compare with the low power LED frame in the market, Epoxy need extra proceedure to remove the extra plastic, and the new proceeding is required as well, it may drop the rate of production, and increase the production cost, and the technology is not well developed still not grown enough that is why the high power LED still not popular yet. So, This research on the foundation of the LED frame or the photoelectric company with many years development experience, develop the high temperature resistance & Good resistance to ultraviolet radiation intensity LED frame to fit for the mass production, and to obtain the molding parameter determination, including temperature and timing of the clamping force of transfer molding, transfer force, transfer speed, and the electricity and timing of deflasing, etc. Then to test the reliability during the assembly section. The test including High humidity environment test, High temperature weather resistance test,Red ink leakage test and UV test. The result including two parts: squeeze pressure 16.7 kgf/cm²、 clamp pressure 100 kgf/cm²、Dispensing time 9-12s, deflasing power is 3A,electrolytic reaction time 3 minutes, then get the best parameter.No bubble and fall off during 168H test with 85% humidity & 85°C high temperature,non-discolouring with 2h roast of 150°C, and get 70% reflectivity with 1000h roast of 150°C, and pass Red ink leakage test. And hereby, we got the the high power epoxy LED frame with UV resistant, and develop the tooling for the transfer-molding and assembly section. And research for the high power LED technology, Promote the competitiveness of the LED industry,Let the whole LED industry development in Taiwan leading force in Asia, China, Japan, South Korea, in international beyond Europe and the United States and other countries.
