Full textOne of the primordial questions in the study of Late Antiquity concerns the transition from the ancient polytheistic religion to Christianity. The archaeological discoveries that have been made in the Eastern part of the Mediterranean Basin have revealed a number of late Christian (or Jewish) pavements decorated with rich polychrome mosaics that reuse figures stemming from the Greek iconographic tradition, which include personifications of cosmological elements. In this manner elements of time can be encountered, such as the Four Seasons (Tropai) or the Months (Menes), the Earth (Ge) sometimes surrounded by her Fruits (Karpoi), specific celestial bodies such as the Sun (Helios), the Moon (Selene), sometimes accompanied by the Zodiac, the female marine Element (Thalassa) or the male (Okeanos, Abyssos) and the four Rivers of Paradise (Geon, Phison, Tiger and Euphrates). This thesis makes a stylistic and comparative analysis of each of these personifications, their iconography and their symbolism, in a religious context, but also in a secular one. The object of this study is to emphasise the specificity of the Eastern part of the Roman Empire between the Fourth and the Sixth centuries. And also to insist in particular on the longevity of the Greek culture and its iconographic traditions, despite an official change in religion

Full textThis thesis aims at exploring the relations between reading practices, gender and class: we appropriate Bourdieu's theory by elaborating, through the linking of theory and fieldwork, the concepts of gender habitus and gender trajectories. By focusing on readers who deployed a reader habitus, and who take part in reader clubs, we emphasize the reading's effects as far as this practice supports the construction of oneself. We assume that reading practices can reshape and subvert gender. The reader habitus results from middle-class socialization, characterized by a cultural goodwill which is specific to middle¬class women. Nevertheless, reader habitus is neither feminine, nor masculine. This habitus deploys a practical sense based on the caring for oneself and for the others, as it was brought into light by M. Foucault. By linking up the foucaldian caring for oneself and the feminist theory of ethics of care, we can enlighten the anti-individualistic political ideal which could be brought up by the caring for oneself in reading practices. But it is the cultural goodwill which is prominent and it narrows the possibilities, for the readers, to make a political issue of their readings'appropriations, as constituting a distinctive symbolic capital prevails. Indeed, between the readers of each club, the literary legitimacy is at stake, and gender represents a distinctive category underlying this legitimacy. Finally, gender subversion by reading is drawn as a virtual trajectory. This trajectory would enable to overstep gender cleavages if it was completely achieved by readers

Full textThe Sun deity was documented in Rome and in Italy well before the advent of the Empire. Considered secondary for a long time, this god’s importance grows only during the late Antiquity. This study aims at offering a renewed approach of its image by emphasizing the constancy of its iconography, the uniformity of the messages associated to it, and its increasing importance in the imperial political ideology which we are to explain and place in a more global perspective from the 2nd to the 4th century.Within this thesis we will study the representations of the Sun deity, as a god and as the personification of the sun. From the analysis of its documented relationship to other divinities we will establish its cosmic power and the particular use of its image in an imperial context

Full textThis dissertation offers a new interpretation of the manuscript Brussels, KBR, 9631 containing the Master of Wavrin’s miniatures of Gérard de Nevers. Probably produced in the 1460’s for the Duke of Burgundy Philip the Good, the images rely on symbolism in the very broad meaning of the term. The Master of Wavrin’s repertoire, based on both plastic and iconographic mechanisms, allows the artist to endow the images with meanings. Playing on compositions, colours and even on the meanings of words, he provokes the spectator and invites him to produce a voiced and dialogical reading of the iconographic cycle. Such an understanding of the manuscript’s function as a game is in keeping with the artistic, literary and intellectual context of the time and the well-know taste of the court for ambiguity and equivocality. A renewed - and oblique - reading of the miniatures, based on the utterances they suggest, allows us to perceive the personal reading the artist made of the text. Since the young knight’s wandering is, in the images, not only a courtly or warlike initiation but also an erotic one, humour and bawdiness become essential themes. As a consequence, the question of gender turns out to be central. And, as this dissertation demonstrates it, the Master of Wavrin’s images do not reflect the dominant discourses or misogynistic views of the time

Full textIn this work, a first volume includes a linguistic component involving a textometric analysis of Jules Verne’s writings that provides an overview of his work from a statistical perspective; this analysis has allowed us to enhance our vision of his discourse. Taking advantage of new possibilities offered by recent technologies, we have performed a detailed study of nearly all of the corpus of Verne. The second volume explores the influence of Freemasonry on Verne’s work. This volume relates to new trends that have been explored in recent years, providing an additional element that has permitted a new interpretation of the writer. This body of literary criticism has examined Jules Verne under a different light, viewing his work as being influenced by esotericism, a perspective significantly removed from the traditional conception of his writings. It is important to emphasize that a philosophical component, close to certain secret societies such as Freemasonry, permeates the work of Verne and deserves further study

Full textBy trying to understand the world around them, children develop their thinking and build their knowledge based on the development of their language; which will one day serve their reading and writing acquisition. However, a child with a primary language disorder, who does not have a sufficiently complex syntax, will very often experience difficulties in reading and writing comprehension, two predictors of academic success. In addition to the development of the representation of the alphabetical system and the structuring of the narrative, the production of a complex syntax is essential for school learning, the following question should be highlighted: what are the learning contexts promoting syntactic extension of children with a primary language disorder? At school, children undergo several different learning everyday contexts where oral expression is used. In this study, interventions with complex discussions were realized in a developmental approach promoting children’s literature with a preschooler who has a primary language disorder. Four contexts were carried out on a daily basis over 12 weeks: interactive reading, gameboard, symbolic play and invented storytelling dictated to an adult. Among a total of 160 videos taken from these interventions, a video of each of these contexts was selected. After the integral transcription of these videos, a selection of 841 spontaneous and natural phrases uttered by the child was taken from the verbatims. The goal was to identify the educational contexts promoting syntactic complexity in children with a primary language disorder. It is through the analysis of the oral syntactic complexity of a child with a primary language disorder across different educational contexts that a comparison of syntactic productions according to the various educational contexts was drawn. The results show that it is during interactive reading that the child has complexified the most of his syntactic structures, which demonstrates that decontextualized narration is one of the best contexts to allow syntactic extension and complexity in children with a primary language disorder. The results of the present study also confirm that the child demonstrates a large zone of proximal development with regard to his syntactic capacities. Teachers are thus invited to offer complex and adapted interventions that will support the child in his language structure. Finally, this research has corroborated a developmental evolution in the complexity of complex sentence structures.

Full textThis PhD studies the process of becoming a partner in professional services firms, envisaged through the lens of the building of the partner identity. To this end, it implements the concept of « career » developed by interactionist sociology to analyse the making of a partner in the context of the Big 4 international audit firms. Becoming a partner is a process that starts right after recruitment and which is governed by complex and largely informal mechanisms and political manoeuvring. We characterize these mechanisms with the help of the notion of “stable”, whose purpose is to understand procedures of co-option in their unofficial dimension but also to account for the structuration of the partner level in firms and the role played by hierarchies within this level in post-partner career progression. We come to the conclusion that auditors actually become partners much earlier than their official promotion to the rank, from the moment they consider themselves as such. This awakening is yet only the first turning point on the road to partnership. It is only when they are officially co-opted that auditors become the partners they were, by being recognised as such by their peers, completing therefore their identity conversion. This work contributes to the literature in the sociology of professions and organizational theory fields by investigating how professionals are socialized and how their identity is constructed and by grasping more accurately the organization of professional services firms

Full textLes Cœurs Fendus is the story of two free spirits, La Pie and Aigle Noir, who try to liberate their people from the forest in which they are prisoners. To achieve that aim, they have to break off the despotic reign of the queen Chienne by violating her laws and discovering and appropriating themselves sentimentality and love. The following essay is about the allegory and the numerous readings it permits of a literary work. In fact, a creation text does not necessary offer only a one-dimensional reading as it can divide, under the effect of allegory, in several interpretations given to the reader’s understanding. A realm of possibilities then takes hold of the pages of a novel or a tale and, slowly, word by word, uncovers it to the reader.

Full textIn Byzantium eikon refers indiscriminately to all forms of representation and its use is a matter for multiple regimes, both conceptual and practical. The thesis starts from the first apologetic discourses produced by the iconoclast crisis and looks downstream, in the earlier literature, the Byzantine theory of the image, understood as a consequent system of thought that gives an account of the rationale, the constitution and the perception of plastic representation, and the types of discourse it generates. This theory is "ambiental", formulated through speculation within multiple contexts, from the dogmatic to hagiography; their juxtaposition allows us to see what the Byzantines' Idea of plastic arts is, through their interpretations of the process which transforms a physical object in an art image and their responses vis-à-vis the latter. Taking into account the antique conceptual heritage as well as the contemporary usage, proceeding by adjustment s, or even contradictions, the agents of this theory establish an original understanding of the image. Their positions, though fragmentary, reveal a breadth of subjects, supported by the fundamental Christian principles: a cosmology resulting from God's agnosia and the vertical split of the cosmos in created and uncreated, and the existential concept of hypostasis. The ratification of the form is absent and the focus is on content management, understood as a mutation of mimesis: the plastic image is not an apparent duplication, but participates actually in the being of the subject which is represented. It allows thus the passage from Theoria to Praxis and serves the will of the Byzantines to produce an experience from knowledge (visual or other). This confirms the thesis of Belting on the promotion of the image as presence vis-à-vis the image as aesthetic, at all levels, ontological, formal, functional or psychological. This ascertainment does not mean a lack of aesthetics; the later is now based on properties other than form, which probably are not aesthetic in the beginning, but they eventually become so

Full textFrom the point of view of the theory of the society, the exit from the modernity can be understood as the withdrawal of an unity ideal of the society as well as a consistency one of the subjective experience of the social life, an ideal that has been governed and directed by the principle of the universal reason. In that sense, and for saying it in an imaging way, we will say that this exit from the modernity is a progressive passage from verticality toward horizontality; there is no more regulating and transcendent principle enlightening humanity, pulling it up to its heights, the focal point has been gone. The postmodern subject is from now on evolving by taking contact a posteriori with what is standing in front of him, hic et nunc, in that same moment of its constitution and from the surrounding diversity. This transformation of the relation to the totality, as typical as a crisis, imprints and inscribes itself within all the dimensions of the social practice. The aesthetic and expressive dimension of the human practice then also holds, necessarily, the mark of that progressive erosion of the being mode of the modernity and appears as an effort to end the representation regime. On the aesthetic operation plan, this effort is without a doubt one of the fundamental characteristics of the exit of the modernity. The postmodern mutation of the being mode related to the modern world is objectively translated by expressive wills that are actualizing and showing themselves in artworks which are their echoes, as much as efforts to end with the representation. It is then possible, and that is what I will try to show in this thesis, to read these different dialectical moments of the postmodern societal transition, from a selective typology of formal propositions of expressive unity which aim to replace, within these provocations addressed to the sensibility, the unifying function of the exterior referent, although it was subjective or objective. So these are artworks (that I assert that they are archetypal) that are going to be examined here, artworks that are coming from the architecture, painting, music and cinema domains, artworks that will serve at my effort to illustrate the new expressive will linked to, according to me, the general mutation of the culture held by the postmodernity. The examination of these artworks will also show that a fragmentation process is working at the heart of the deployment of the postmodernity; that this « processive » fragmentation becomes also for the subject, in its constatation and in its re-catching, an invitation to free composition of possible worlds.

Full textThe family meal is a relatively unknown object of study being developed in different scientific fields such as public health, sociology, or anthropology. Regarding eating disorders, the frequency of the number of meals shared with the family is inversely proportional to the emergence of such disorders as well as other psychiatric disorders in adolescence such as violent behavioral disorders, depression and suicidal thoughts. Notwithstanding its frequency, the meal is an essential moment for the development of an individual – also psychologically. Within the family life, it is a daily time of sharing and meeting which brings together the children and those who are close to them. The meal is a moment of privileged exchange, rich in behaviors and interactions: it certainly mirrors the relationship between a family and food, but it accounts even more for the bonds between the family members. The table scene constantly proposes a narrative animating and featuring those who partake of the meal. In this context, several authors have introduced a family meal as part of children’s psychiatric care. Our thesis work will be divided into three main parts. A first theoretical part will report on the role of family meals in the context of psychiatric care for adolescents. A second part will describe the program called "therapeutic family meal" as it is set up in our ward: we will explain how the therapeutic family meal is used by our medical team specialized in the care of teenagers suffering from anorexia nervosa. A third part will develop on a research conducted among caregivers participating in this program. Concerning the involved caregivers, their experience –both individual and collective– has been the subject of our research work. According to a qualitative methodology resulting from the grounded theory and from interviews made with a reasoned sample of participants in this program, we will develop, as results, the different themes characterizing this experience. Our analysis will articulate these themes through several concepts resulting from the symbolic interactions that we will have defined beforehand. Finally, we will address the cultural and methodological limits of our approach. At the end of this last part, we will discuss the concept of paradoxical proximity that emerges from the caring practice in this particular context. We will also discuss the transition at the end of this hospitalization and the setting of a family therapeutic meal involving families and caregivers. This transmission is part of the passage rite embodied by hospitalization for the sick teenager and her family. The issues concerned by the therapeutic family meal, necessary to better frame it, are the ritual approach, a socio-anthropological reflection, the question about the status of the sick teenager (at the hospital and at home), the transition between the hospital and home, and the nature of the caregiver-receiver relationship. Based on two clinical cases, and on our interviews with caregivers, we will discuss the psychopathological contributions of this practice and the new care standpoints that it implies

Full textThe purpose of this Dissertation is to understand the reception of Maurice Barrès (1862-1923), going from the first years of his career to the aftermath of the Second World War, while insisting on specific “moments” of this reception. This will firstly be done by comprehending how a writer’s authority is shaped, in the context of 1890’s Symbolist milieu. Consequently, we will analyse the relationships between Barrès and the copywriters of the La Revue blanche going till the clash caused by the Dreyfus affair. We will then take interest in his reception within the La NRF, through the interpretation that made three major figures of the review: André Gide, Albert Thibaudet and Jacques Rivière – readers that were both critic to the nationalist writer as fascinated by his auctorial posture. At the same time, we will try to understand how the Surrealists have kept an ambiguous tie with this writer during the 1920’s, by closely studying Barrès’s trial (May 1921) and the particular welcome that Louis Aragon gave to this figure, during his surrealist phase, but also during the rest of his career. Finally, we will finish by analysing the particular case of Joseph Delteil, a writer close to Surrealism but whose position was torn between his regionalist grounding and an avant-garde one, and who finds through Barrès a model of resolution of these contradictions. The study of Barrès’s reception, by means of the quoted cases, is thus made in the purpose of understanding how an author’s posture was able to dispense, in the ideologist and esthetical milieu opposed to traditionalism, as well as among the ambiguous manifestations of the literary loyalty
Einman, Maria. "Lector in drama.
Full textThis study examines the reading of drama texts as the reading of fictional texts, aiming to broaden the current approach according to which the reading of drama texts is mainly limited to text analysis. This question is examined in the light of the issue of suicide in 19th-century French drama. The principal aim of this study is therefore to understand the impact of the character’s suicide on the reader via the detailed analysis of the ins and outs of the suicidal act. The study applies Vincent Jouve’s concept of the virtual reader, who is defined as an implicit and atemporal recipient of the text effects. This reader emerges in a fictional world that is supported by an operative device (dispositif) based on the Lacanian triptych of the Real, the Symbolic and the Imaginary. The dissertation consists of five chapters. The theoretical discussion is followed by four chapters that deal, respectively, with melodrama, romantic drama, naturalist drama, and symbolist drama. In addition to the effect of the fictional suicide on the reader (which is systematically connected to the catharsis), the evolution of theatrical genres and forms is explored from the perspective of “virtual” reading. Thereby, the reading of 19th-century French drama could be viewed as a journey from the optimistic certainty of melodrama to the tragic indeterminacy of symbolist drama, from actual to probable suicides, from “sorrowful” catharsis to anticatharsis
