Full textBased on the theory of the bibliogical model, this study aims at interpreting the book situation in the people's republic of congo. The bibliogical model, i. E. The organization of books in each country or group of countries, is based on the book-society relationship. It is impossible to understand the life of books in a country if this model concept is not being refered to. Each model, in the free market, socialist or third world countries, has its criteria, mainly linked to the political system, but also to the history of the country (colonization for instance). This was the case for congo, the study of whose society was necessary, as the history of books in the country cannot be dissociated from the european penetration. Thus, starting from the colonial, independence and post-colonial models, we were able to show a vacuum : books were not seen as a must in the development of the country. The colonial book policy consisted in keeping at its lowest possible level any potential development of local publicating or distributing. Since independence in 1960, praise-worthy efforts are to be noted in the field of education, but they were linked mainly to a growth of school attendance

Full textHemmou Ounamir is an Amazigh Myth, from the oral tradition. The diversity of the versions of the myth which are still in circulation today, the researches and studies to which it was subjected and the multiple transpositions it has witnessed proved its permanent vitality and usefulness and inform us more about the large scope of its dissemination and richness. In addition, this myth continues to exert a lasting spell on people and is nowadays still appreciated for its sacredness by a great number of taletellers. The myth of Hammou Ounamir consists of the sumtotal of those versions which we are supposed to detect in our survey of all the old publications and among those to be collected from the taletellers themselves. Its mythical dimension emanates not only from its production and reproduction, but also stems from its reception and interpretation. Our journey through / and exploration of the multiple types / layers of the hypertexts of the myth reveals the genesis of a whole prolific imaginary where is reflected the personae/image of the mythical hero proliferated and multiplied through a gallery/ a forest of mirrors. A palimpsest reading of the transition of the myth from the verbal/the oral to the written, then to literature and the arts, from the production to the reception, is the major preoccupation/concern/axis of this thesis. In fact, the acts of writing and reading of the plot of Hemmou Ounamir end up being an integral part of the workings of the myth itself and the very articulation of its imaginary powers - that perforce add to its polysemy and openness. The myth goes beyond being a mere cameo - an object that offers itself for reading and interpretation, it becomes; however, a tool of analysis of the subject as well as of the collective consciousness. This transformation of the myth is going to revitalise it within a new and fecund chain of meanings through which is both reflected the urgent and the vital preoccupations of the society and are answered questions related to ethics, ontology and identity

Full textThis study examines the development of lianhuanhua, a genre of Chinese comic, as an expression of popular culture in modern Shanghai, the most important metropolis in the Chinese modern history. Chapter one attempts to explain why lianhuanhua was born in Shanghai and how it became a part of popular culture. The background was the political and cultural configurations created as a result of the presence of the foreign settlements. Cultural and technical elements fed the creation of lianhuanhua. The development of lianhuanhua was a process of combining pictures and words into comic booklet that became very popular among the common people. In Chapter Two, The Fate of Hong and Bi is taken as an example to explore the relationship between lianhuanhua and other forms of entertainments. It established a connection between different entertainment spheres. Through the whole process of transition, we can observe the development of visual narrative, the interaction between different forms of urban entertainments, and the urban culture that played an essential, decisive and directional role behind the scenes. In Chapter Three, research focuses mainly on producers from three angles: the producers’ original cultural identity and social status, their condition in production circles, and their relationship with the metropolis. Lianhuanhua was a link between these new residents and the metropolis.. The complexity of this publishing industry reveals the living strategy of these immigrants. In Chapter Four, we study how popular culture faced the three different political challenges. The public media, especially the press, represented the “correct” discourse by the upper classes over the common people. The war itself in 1937 raised a special challenge due to political instability. Official interference by the National Government also influenced the role of lianhuanhua. Yet Lianhuanhua survived all these challenges. We identified four important elements in the process of the development of lianhuanhua. First, the basic precondition for the rise and the development of lianhuanhua was the emergence of Shanghai as a modern city. Second, the genre of lianhuanhua was within the reach, economically and culturally, of a wide range of readers, which was an important factor for its popularisation. Third, producers were a crucial group for the development of lianhuanhua. Fourth, lianhuanhua is a stage of the wrestle between the elite and the common people

Full textThis research focuses on the world of publishing and book in France in the XIXth century. It starts with a simple question : how could books publishers, designers and producers answer the increasing readers number during the century ? Our work tries to describe the relationships which link publishers and the growing number of readers, and how, from 1830 to 1875, publishers have adopted commercial strategies and proposed new media to an increasing readership. From the book collecting volume to 20 cents deliveries, this research tells the professional career of various publishers who allowed to offer in a personal way a greater number of works to a greater amount of readers. It finally sets straight various publishers's behaviours and gives rise to new kinds of modern publishing

C. , it has concentrated itself upon the training of the writing ability, whereas in taiwan, it has aimed at developing the children's taste for reading. The first chapter of the present thesis analyses and compares the aims and scopes of the syllabi of 1978 and 1986 in the p. R. C. , and of 1975 and 1992 in taiwan. The second chapter respectively studies the compiling methods and the morral themes of the textbooks. The third chapter deals with the different methods of teaching reading, that is through the intensive learning of caracters int the p. R. The fourth chapter shows how the training of reading comprehension and other linguistic abilities with the different kinds and contents of exercices fosters a passive attitude in the p. R. Lastly, in the fifth chapter, the analysis of the results of an essay given to school children in both beijing and taipei confirms ou hypothesis of the relative elitism of the teaching methods used to teach reading in

Full textThis work focuses on the journalists from Russian and French daily newspapers who cover political events on the Belarussian territory. Their own national and transnational representations, are at the center of our questioning. The way their cooperative interactions elaborate the Russian and French audience's perception of the Belarusian elections is another aspect of this work. Their narrative, framed by each newspaper's editorial project for which they work is the third aspect this thesis explores. Our goal is to identify the common values that tie together the different actors of the world of information in Minsk, which is motivated by foreign reporters. Furthermore, we shed light on inner dynamics within the groups that take part in the mutual production of information, which create distinct communities that make up this world and are united around their own objectives, their own identities, and their own narrative. This is where the matter of borders between these communities lies and allows us to reveal the foreign reporters' team and the Belarusian dissident community. This work also interrogates the structures of both communities, the relationships between their respective members, their inner conventions, the relations between colleagues and individuals outside of the group. Finally, we explore the results of such cooperation, which are in line with the editorial projects of the Russian and French newspapers. Thus we analyze the expression of professional logistics on an editorial scale that transpires through the enunciation of the different press titles

Full text"poetry as the whole of life" life as a dream" are two phrases of cadou that invite us to explore his poetical universe taking into account his biography, the slant of his soul and his aesthetics. The birth and maturity of a poet who died when young, the destiny of a man who chose to be a provincial, a life injured by trials ans bereavements, love radiating all along on that journey, are as many themes chronologically dealt with in rene guy cadou's life and passion, published by bof in 1975. In the bonds in this world (champ vallon, 1982), the connection of what is written with the spatio-temporal referent is analysed under the notion of "realyricism" and is integrated in the general problematics of interdependence. It is important for cadou to abolish the borders, to live through words the multiple relations between the animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms, between the beings, the ego and the others, even between lyricism and humour. The virtue of communication and the fertility of exchange asserts itself as a fundamental value through a set of themas which can be as well spatial (doors, windows) as verbal (the functions of language, the fulfilled dynamics of questions ans answers). An anti-narcissus, cadou incarnates a generous orphism, softy "panic" (cf. Pan) in which the whoman, children and privileged animals are active figures. As a supreme value love demands a quasi mystical transparency. An ever-faithful man, the poet grew up out of his geographical, social and verbal fertilizing soil. He was born of the ordinary people and never stopped testifying to that belonging. The unpublished story poetry and the people shows that cadou was an exemplary conciliator. If he enjoyed populism (in novels or poetry) he also showed he was fond of popular, literary or paraliterary, culture. A member of the rochefort school or by himself, he committed himself in his own way by addressing everybody

"Reading and popular libraries. Model of collection and reading development at the Mancomunitat of Catalonia popular libraries: 1918-1922"
TEXT:
Historical research on the creation and content of the collection of the popular libraries created by the Mancomunitat of Catalonia between 1918 and 1922 at Valls, Olot, Sallent, Borges Blanques, Canet de Mar, El Vendrell, Pineda and Figueres.
The research's aim is to describe the book collection and define the cultural and ideological values that shape the reading offer at the libraries. In order to attain this aim, the essay firstly presents a political, cultural, library and publishing industry background that frames the proposal, and then it tends to the description, evaluation and reception of the bibliographic selection.
The bibliographic information has been introduced in a data base that has permitted a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the libraries collections. The analysis identifies on one side the main lines of the collection development, and on the other side it matches the selected authors and reference texts with the reading canons and the cultural movements of that time.
The answer of the municipalities and the readers to the bibliographic proposal has been obtained from different documentary evidence: local newspapers, the annual reports of the libraries trusts and the reports of the librarians in each town.
The investigation ascertains the compromise of the reading proposal with the Mancomunitat's government programme and the cultural and ideological values of the conservative catalanism, the ruling political force at the time. The investigation also analyzes the specific characteristics of Eugeni d'Ors and Jordi Rubió i Balaguer's intervention in the collection development of the libraries as directors of the popular libraries system.
The research is situated at the origins of the Catalan librarian tradition to recognize the
book and reading speeches that are drawn up at the public library spaces, from the moment that these spaces were created and institutionalised in Catalonia, at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Full textThis thesis stems from my curiosity about a Tibetan book that was creating a sensation among its readers, who considered it quite exceptional. I discovered Joys and Sorrows of the Naktsang Boy (Nags tshang zhi lu’i skyid sdug) in 2008, approximately six months after its initial publication in Xining, a city located in Qinghai province, at the extreme northeast of the Tibetan Plateau (People’s Republic of China, PRC). As its title suggests, the work relates a child’s experience. Yet under this seeming banality, the autobiographical account it offers of the conflicts and violent upheavals that marked the incorporation of Eastern Tibet (namely the regions known to Tibetans as Amdo and Kham) into the PRC’s administration in the 1950s is an unprecedented historical testimony. Memories of those times haunt people’s minds, but their expression remains banished from the public sphere.Despite its political sensitivity, Joys and Sorrows swiftly became a best-seller on the regional Tibetan literary market. The inquiry thus focuses on observing the sensation created by the book, but also on understanding its publication process and forms of circulation. How could a heavily state-controlled publishing system have produced such a book, which was legally published in 2007 with a “permission to print”? Despite having an “internal document” status, how did it become so broadly available to the general public? The present thesis looks into editorial and bookselling practices in late 2000s Amdo, therefore exploring some of the real, albeit limited, possibilities of acting through the written word.Building on the case of Joys and Sorrows, this thesis also attempts to empirically describe certain forms of presence of a traumatic past, in its concrete modalities, sometimes tenuous or indirect. How did a book heavily marked by colloquialisms and spelling mistakes, written by a retired civil servant with no previous literary experience, meet with such broad public appreciation? What reading practices, in very diverse social milieus, took hold of this object? How does the narrative device guide reading experiences, helping to account for the strong resonance of this testimony with its audience? Why does the book fascinate so many people, even though most of the readers I met in Amdo, whatever their age, told me “the same thing” had happened in their own home areas? Finally, how can we analyse this testimony’s mediation in building links between its various publics, in the imagination of a common past, and in the transformation of shared horizons of expectation for the future? The materials presented are based on an ethnographic inquiry carried out in Amdo between 2008 and 2012, as well as on a corpus of texts devoted to Joys and Sorrows, and published in different media between 2007 and 2019. The results of the inquiry are set out in two parts, each made up of eight chapters. The first part of the dissertation is devoted to Joys and Sorrows as an editorial object, the second to Joys and Sorrows as an object of reading and as a narrative. Reception is understood as an active process that is constitutive of witnessing as a social phenomenon. Drawing on works from various disciplines—sociology, history, anthropology, as well as literary and areal studies—this thesis seeks to account for the phenomenon that Joys and Sorrows constituted locally. Based on this case, it also aims to shed light on some of the implications of the persistent, albeit not very visible, presence of this recent historical past in Tibetan areas of the PRC

Full textThe work of this thesis is focused on public libraries in the working classes district of the Seine-Saint-Denis. Based on an ethnographic survey in a public library in a working class district, the thesis analyzes the public reading policy since its development until his transposition by the librarians and its reception in a territory. In this region, public librairies are put to the test in many ways. The distance of the majority of the population and several conflicts and tensions - conflicts between librarians and public, hostility against cultural actions developed by the libraries, possible acts of voluntary malicious damage directed against the equipment, complicate the local integration of these cultural institutions. At these problems we can add specific changements of the cultural field. The actual context of the redefining of hierarchies and of the cultural legitimacy affects directly librarians and asks the question of their social legitimacy. The thesis presents how the territorial integration difficulties of public libraries are rooted in the history and evolution of public reading policy on one side and neighborhoods and working classes on the other

This work is about the historical and cultural assumptions inserted in the contents of literacy of the Campanha de P? no Ch?o Tamb?m se Aprende a Ler, a movement of culture and popular education, developed in the State of Rio Grande do Norte in the period between 1961 and 1964. The hypothesis is the one of the existence of a romantic-political ideology which permeated a national developmentalist conception sited in its didactic-pedagogic instrument of literacy, the Book of Lecture of De P? no Ch?o Tamb?m se Aprende a Ler/RN (1963). It has the aim to understand how the popular critical consciousness marked by conceptions of culture and popular education in its social, cultural and ideological relations, happened. Analyses the object of study by the symbolical cartography, methodological procedures which have as principles to retire from an antecedent source implicit meanings that can discover new realities, articulating the keywords of that document to the ideology that surrounded the Campanha de P? no Ch?o Tamb?m se Aprende a Ler /RN. As results, the research showed that, considering the historical-cultural assumptions of the national developmentalist thought sited in the studied Book of Lecture, the conditions of the political-cultural context and of the advance of the Brazilian national industry on the beginning of the 1960th , admitted a process of social integration lavished by the popular literacy on the Campanha de P? no Ch?o/RN, linked with the possibility of transition of the popular conscience, in a romantic-political perspective of the culture and the popular education

Full textRarely touched as subject, the history of French cinematographic journals during the aftermath of the Second World War (1945-1952) was divided into two streams: those of specialized journals and those of generalized ones such as Cinémonde, Ciné-Miroir ou Mon Film. They transformed the columns of ancient journals into “film-telling”[Film raconté]. L’Ecran Français, however, was the only journal able to synthesize elements both from generalizing journals (i.e. readers’ letter, advertisement, and cult for stars) and from specializing journals (i.e. political position and comments regarding the cinema). Since then, the two streams of journals were more and more distinguished by their didactic and moral differences. The common point for specialized journals was their expectation for promoting cinematographic education alongside the popular educating movement. Some journals were issued from secular cine-clubs (Ciné-Club and Informations-Ufocel) while others were from catholic ones (Télé-Ciné). There were otherwise journals, which were meant to actively defend American cinema, such as the reputed Revue du cinéma founded by Jean George Auriol, as well as La Gazette du cinéma by Maurice Schérer. These journals also contributed to “experimental aspects” for the newly-born journal Cahiers du cinéma. Positif was a journal similar to that of Raccords in terms of spirit; it seemed to unite and transmit the legacy of two confidential journals: Saint Cinéma des Prés, which defended as well experimental cinema as American cinema, and L’Age du cinéma, which claimed a surrealist approach while denying those films that over-emphasized avant-gardism. Full textIn this study the overarching question is in what way the Swedishauthor Alf Henrikson has acted as a popular educator and if he as such hasbeen a part of a popular educational context. The different popular educationalactivities he associated with could be considered as verification thathe did act as a popular educator. Two works of his popular historical authorshipare examined and they are characterized by the intention or ambitionto disseminate historical knowledge. By his historical authorship healso was a part of a popular historical tradition in Sweden.Henrikson appeared at several times as a popular lecturer and hereby hereproduces a tradition from the worker’s institutes and the associations forpopular lectures. He also performed on several occasions in radio programsand TV programs and disseminated knowledge and education. Radio broadcastsas well as television are regarded as popular educational activities. Inconsideration to the subject areas of his knowledge he can be affiliated withan educational ideal in the Swedish worker’s movement and Swedish populareducation. His educational ideal is the personality creating neohumanisticprinciple. Henrikson also supported the thought of taking over the middles-classes idea of cultural heritage.

Full textThis research gives an account of the history of the « pièces gothiques ». By focusing on the production of these means of thin French black-letter printed brochures from the 1470s to the end of the sixteenth century, it is shown that these booklets played a special role in the transformation of the relationship between their readers and the authorities, and in the evolution of culture during the Renaissance. The « pièces gothiques » (over 2 200 are known) were a new kind of inexpensive book for a large audience, and were spread in the form of a series of small texts printed in French, heralding the new genres of « newspaper » and « popular book ». They were produced by some editors who adapted their publication to the news mechanisms of production and distribution of books then being seen following the invention of the printing press. The « pièces gothiques » were a sign of the appropriation and adaptation of this new technology of social communication (i. E. , the printed book) to editorial audacity and necessity, as well as to new cultural needs. Apart from the spread of information, they also tended to inculcate some of the norms and values that shaped the opinions and behaviour of their readers (or listeners). These texts therefore contributed to the development and functioning of two essential and complementary structures of the modern state: ideological legitimization and opinion

Full textAbstractThis research is trying to understand the reading practices of the women who regularly reads the gossip magazine Échos Vedettes. Five concepts have been used, The first three are parts of an everyday reading economical system : spatio-temporal economy, social economy and economy of text. Reading repertoires and photography are the lasts concepts used. Six interviews have been done with women who regularly read Échos Vedettes. They have been recruted by the « snowball » method. The analysis showed that Échos Vedettes can have three different states depending on the moment, the use and its role. It can be seen as a commodity, as an object or as a content. Social relations between women, repertoires, photography and rituals are the principal elements that define the reading practices of women who read Échos Vedettes on a regular basis.

Full textThe object of this master’s dissertation is the musical work of Michel Latraverse, also known as Plume. By identifying the anticipated listener of this singer-songwriter’s songs, we will define his aesthetic project. We will first note how Latraverse, when defining himself as an artist, relies on a certain hybridity. His influences are diverse and varied, and thus allow him to explore different musical styles and topics. His writings explore beauty within every day life’s simplicity and commonness. However, by putting forth an exclusion reflex from which no one is safe, Latraverse also tends to expose life’s ugliness. We will then show, using reader-response criticism theories, how Latraverse draws from both popular and learned cultures and thus, in spite of his exclusion reflex, allows readers of sometimes very different proficiency to reconcile. All this will allow us to conclude that Plume Latraverse systematically belittles man in order to bring him back to his most humble physical and corporal expression. He thus creates a community of the lowly where each find their place and where exclusion is no longer possible.

Full textPlayed by María Elena Velasco since the late 1960s, La India María brings to life an “authentic” indigenous woman who despite her social standing and limitations, denounces the treatment of institutions to which she’s subjected: the political, judicial, economic, and religious systems. However, since her first appearances in theaters, critics have focused more on superficial aspects of her performance, judging that indigenous peoples and Mexico were represented in a reactionary way. Since the beginning of the 1990s, researchers have proposed a “negotiated” reading of her movies: they paid attention to the effects Velasco’s humorous performance and adventures had on her audience, but they also recognized the ambiguity of the character and storylines, all the while stressing the ethnic and class discourses. Through the analysis of Tonta, tonta pero no tanto (Foolish, Foolish But Not so Much) by Fernando Cortés (1972), Ni de aquí ni de allá (Neither From Here nor From There) by María Elena Velasco (1988), and Sor Tequila (Sister Tequila) by Rogelio González (1977), my thesis contributes to this reading by studying three subjects: the stereotype as represented by this character, in order to show how it criticizes Mexican society; the new cultural challenges that the Neoliberal system presents to indigenous peoples; and the transformation of masculine gender models and the public through an alternative construction of feminine gender models.

Full textThis master’s thesis focuses on the representation of the idea of “elsewhere” as conveyed by the illustrated newspaper L’Opinion publique’s engravings to the pictures’readers in Quebec. Indeed, if history did commence with the written word alone, challenges would arise with regards to the historical study of those who did not leave behind such accounts, namely the illiterate or barely literate. We propose to study this audience by means of the printed picture. Thus, we explored how “elsewhere” was portrayed to the newspaper’s readers through the medium of the picture. We believe that the pictures were understood by everyone. Considering half of the newspaper consisted of illustrations, we assume L’Opinion publique would have been accessible to everyone. Our conclusions show that these illustrations could have expanded knowledge of space of the Quebecers, through the representation of the news. We notice a part of these engravings come from French newspapers and depict France and her colonies. Through the elite, Montreal population is in contact with a degree of French influence. A comparison with the Canadian Illustrated News reveals significant differences. This newspaper, owned by the same person, indicates a marked interest in the British Empire. The Canadian Illustrated News aims at a public more cultured than the French-speaking counterpart, indicated by the broader array of topics covered. Thus both papers explored different points-of-views, which were transmitted to its readers, working class or not, French or English speaking.

Full textNowadays, different literary resources of popular science, including children's literature, are used to address the scientific content in elementary classrooms. Without trying to replace textbooks, these non-formal educational tools offer different narrative and informative texts that present demonstrations of science. In addition to developing scientific curiosity, children's trade books propose scientific texts of high quality. However, these texts would not be without some level of weakness. In particular, they sometimes present erroneous concepts leading to misconceptions. To support the science writers in the popular science resource development suited to alternative conceptions of young learners, and ultimately to get them to change these conceptions, we identified a didactic text designed primarily for classroom work called refutation text. To promote conceptual change, the text first sets out an alternative design, refutes the alternative conception, and then presents scientific explanation. After the analysis of three refutation texts, we were able to identify some didactic concepts at the heart of this text pattern; the concept map, the learner’s knowledge level, and didactic transposition. Inspired by these concepts, we have developed a didactic model of popular science to accompany a science writer, step by step, in the design of appropriate resources for young readers. The Design Experiment model has allowed us to test and improve this experimental model of popular science through the participation of two science writers who each developed two popular science texts. One writer composed two narrative texts, another wrote two informative texts for a group of 83 students in fifth grade. Topics covered in these texts were white sharks, beluga whales, and muscles and training. To study the evolution of student conception, each answered pre-test and post-test questions and some students were also asked to participate in group interviews with the science writers. This research brought together didactics and popular science. Science writers were able to measure the relevance of taking into account the views of young readers’ conceptions, the use of refutation text, and the adaptation of the texts to learner’s knowledge level.
