Abstract:
Public lectures on poetry caught the popular imagination in Britain in the first two decades of the nineteenth century with the performances of John Thelwall, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Thomas Campbell, and William Hazlitt. Lecturers aimed to shape auditors’ reading habits, burnish their critical profiles, and establish a literary canon, but auditors also wielded considerable influence, since their sustained approbation was necessary to a series’ success. A number of oral traditions fed the literary lecture’s development, but it emerged most vitally out of and against the radical speaking culture of the 1790s in which Thelwall and Coleridge had participated, and developed in anxious proximity to an expanding literary marketplace. These pressures informed lecturers’ critical arguments as they debated who should receive a literary education, what works they should read, and for what ends. As historical speaking performances, public lectures demand a methodological approach of their own, because lecturers communicated their arguments with words, physical gestures, facial expressions, and via self-presentation. An interdisciplinary scholarly consensus now recommends approaching these events by gathering as many surviving texts as possible from both parties and situating these performances in their specific times and places. Although women were disallowed from being public literary lecturers, female auditors performed significant cultural roles as patrons, and as hosts and guests at private gatherings that sometimes followed public lectures. Auditors including John Keats, Mary Russell Mitford, Lady Charlotte Bury, and Catherine Maria Fanshawe responded to lectures in conversation, poems, letters, and journal entries that should be considered creative works in their own right.

Abstract:
The final chapter turns to the Irish “spider dancer” Lola Montez and the British-American temperance reformer John B. Gough. At precisely the same time they found themselves reimagined as popular lecturers, and speaking to audiences about Anglo-American unity. Their arrival on the lecture circuit highlights the profound changes at the lyceum in the years before the Civil War. This chapter reveals how these two performers used the authority of their hyphenated identities to pose as cultural mediators, reassuring audiences of the strength of Anglo-American unity. Rather than embodying a medium in decline, increasingly theatricalized events became part of the enlarged civic mission of lecture culture. Montez and Gough were focal points of tremendous cultural energy within a moment of national crisis in which popular cultural forms such as the lecture were conscripted into the broader debates around the meanings of loyalty, disunion, and national identity.

Sahni, Ruchi Ram. The Punjab Science Institute. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199474004.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter is devoted to the story of the Punjab Science Institute and Scientific Workshop, which Ruchi Ram Sahni set up along with Professor J.C. Oman of the Government College, Lahore. The aim of the Institute was to popularize scientific knowledge through the Punjab, initially through lectures illustrated with experiments and magic lantern slides, given both in English and the vernacular. The Institute’s lectures became so popular that Sahni and his colleagues were invited all over the Province, to small muffasil towns, to the native states of Kapurthala, Patiala, and Bhawalpur, as to the followers of a religious Sikh leader; for many years Sahni also lectured on scientific topics in Punjabi to an audience of shopkeepers in Lahore. In addition to his work of popularizing science, Sahni recounts his adventures in setting up of a Scientific Workshop which grew in time to produce such excellent instruments that colleagues at an Industrial Conference in Poona were convinced that they had not been produced in India, but had been made abroad and were being passed off as Indian. The narrative includes a discussion of Sahni’s acquaintance with M.G. Ranade, whom he came to know in Simla and then stayed with in Poona.
