Abstract: The design and measurements of a long external cavity semiconductor laser (LEC Laser) that can be tuned by a diffraction grating are presented. Initially, it has been considered the optimum performance of various cavity designs for coherent fiber optic communication. Following this analysis, there are the description and characterization of optical components (lasers, diffraction gratings, microlensed fiber) and oftlie electronic circuits for laser bias and temperature stabilization. Also, a method for local characterization of passive components inside the cavity is introduced. Then, it is shown the experimental results of a LEC laser operating in 1300 nm, including its tuning range and its frequency selectivity. Finally, a computer analysis for this LEC laser is presented

Full textPrivate speech, according to Wertsch (1980), is defined as a private dialog that the individual promotes with himself and its function lies in the necessity of self-regulation, self-guidance and self-reflection. Private speech of children and adults has been extensively studied by McCafferty (1994), Berk & Spuhl (1995), Fernyhough & Russell (1997), Krafft & Berk (1998), Winsler, Carlton, Barry (2000), Manfra & Winsler (2006), Smith (2007), Day & Smith (2013) and others. In Brazilian research, a gap could be identified regarding the study of private speech in English as a Foreign Langague for Children (LEC) as an important cognitive tool for the teaching-learning process. In these Brazilian studies, language is considered only a source for communication. The purpose of this study was to verify how private speech occured, what was its function and frequency. For this reason, nine children between four and five years old from different nationalities in an international school were voice and video recorded during the activities of Circle Time and Phonics. According to the data collected, in the quantitative analysis, each speech was classified as private speech or social speech in order to count which child produced more private speech. In the qualitative analysis there was the necessity to consider the childs environment in order to describe when private speech occured, its function and frequency. For instance, there are children that are exposed to three or more languages at the same time at home and at school, some only speak English at school and Brazilian Portuguese at home and others speak English and Brazilian Portuguese at home and at school. The findings of this study showed that private speech was important for promoting self-regulation in the teaching-learning process of the children analysed. It also played an important role in children engajament when learning the sounds and the words in English. Besides that, private speech showed an effective involvement of the children during the activities even though they were not heard, apparently, by the teacher.

Full textOxidative stress and inflammation play an important role in the development of cancer. Animal models, such as LEC rats, which have a mutation related to hepatic copper excretion and develop spontaneously an hepatitis and a subsequent hepatocellular carcinoma, are useful tools to study the relationship between oxidative stress, inflammation and initiation of cancer. Gene expression and metabolic profiles of LEC rats at different stages of hepatitis were compared to those of control LEC rats treated with a copper chelating agent, to evaluate the different gene families and metabolic networks involved in liver inflammation and carcinogenesis initiation. Multivariate statistical analyses coupled to gene ontology classification of transcriptomic data revealed an overrepresentation and an increase in the expression of genes involved in protein metabolism-related functions, mainly proteasome genes, with hepatitis. However, some proteasome activities were decreased at the same time. Involvement of proteasome in hepatitis pathogenesis is a new hypothesis. Metabonomic analyses done on 1H NMR profiles from urine and liver samples allowed to identify some metabolites related to hepatitis development. PLS2 regression was made to determine a canonical relationship between liver metabonomic and transcriptomic data. The linear correlation obtained indicated that both gene expression and metabolic perturbations are closely related face to hepatitis development. These correlated data will help making new hypotheses for mechanisms involved in liver inflammation and cancer. We present here an integrative analysis of hepatitis development and cellular responses due to oxidative stress. Our work shows an original and functional way of analysis that illustrates the power of multivariate statistical tools to explore omic data and to raise rational biological hypothesis

Full textThe light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) is a planar layered device, which is comprised of an electroluminescent organic semiconductor (OSC) and mobile ions as the active material sandwiched between an anode and a cathode. Electrolyte is one of the “short slab” of LEC technology. The main objective of this work is developing a new LEC device based on organophosphorus molecule doped organic-inorganic hybrid glass electrolyte. This hybrid glass cannot be synthesized by using classic melt-quenching technique because the melting temperature of glass is always much higher than the degradation temperature of organic molecule. Thus, in this work, we devote to that how to dope the organophosphorus molecule into the glass with high ionic conductivity. In first chapter, the background and mechanism of LEC were introduced. In the second chapter, we attempted to dope the organophosphorus molecule into silicate glass containing high lithium content by sol-gel method. In third chapter, we are working to obtain organophosphorus molecule doped phosphate glass with high ionic conductivity through spark plasm sintering (SPS). A hybrid phosphate glass with ionic conductivity of around 10 -7 S/cm was obtained, and strong photoluminescence was observed. Besides, the electrochemical properties were investigated as well. Moreover, during the process of preparing the LEC by SPS, an interesting phenomenon was found. A broadband blue emission was observed in rare-earth free zinc phosphate oxynitride glass. The fourth chapter is focus on this interesting phenomenon

The Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that colonizes the gastric mucosa of human beings. The chronic infection caused by this pathogen is strongly associated with an increased risk for gastric illnesses different, ranging from chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer for two types of gastric cancer, adenocarcinoma and lymphoma of the lymphoid tissue associated to mucosa. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of cagT markers, LEC, functional and nonfunctional oipA in patients with disorders of gastritis, ulcers and stomach cancer. Genotyping of the strains was performed by PCR. Were evaluated 181 patients attended at the University Hospital Walter Cantídio, 87 (48.1%) men, 94 (51.9%) women, with ages ranging from 18-90 years, mean age of 53 + 17.8 years, with a positive diagnosis for H. pylori infection, these 48 carriers of gastric cancer, 69 patients with peptic ulcer and 64 with gastritis. The prevalence of the genotypes studied was: 145/181 (80.1%) cagT, 83/181 (45.9%) LEC 81/181 (44.7%) oipA and oipA"on"34/81.In the group of patients with gastric cancer was observed that the most frequent genotype was the cagT 43/48 (89,5%), followed by the oipA gene "on" 10/18 (55.6%) and LEC 17/48 (35.4%). In the group of patients with peptic ulcer genotype was the most frequent cagT 62/69 (89.8%), followed by gene LEC, 34/69 (49.3%) and the oipA"on" 13/31 (41.9%). In the group of patients with the most frequent genotype gastritis was cagT 40/64 (62.5%), followed by gene LEC 32/64 (50.0%) and the oipA "on" 11/32 (34.4%). Furthermore, by the presented data there is no association of H. pylori and gender and or age of the patients. The genetic study of the markers of H. pylori infection and its relationship with the gastric disorders is essential to establish the profile of virulence of strains and thus elucidate the clinical outcomes variables involved with this infection.
O Helicobacter pylori é uma bactéria que coloniza a mucosa gástrica de seres humanos.
