Abstract:

Our world is becoming increasingly complex, and is rapidly changingwith distances being reduced. Societies today are also in atransition from traditional production industries to increasingreliance on communication, consumption, services and experience. Asone of these emerging ‘new industries’, tourism is part of thismovement. Globalisation also makes further development of tourismpossible through, amongst other things, the spreading of languages;the development of low-cost carriers; international monetary systems;telecommunications and other technological innovations. Tourismcontributes to the globalisation of society and at the same time is aproduct of it. This is confirmed by complexity theories that stressthe systematic and dynamic nature of globalisation and theinterdependence of the global and the local. Hence, in this thesis,it is argued that acknowledging the complexity of tourism isnecessary for understanding tourism development, and more knowledgeabout tourism also leads to greater knowledge of our society.

The main aim of this thesis is to understand the complexity of localand regional tourist destination development, by exploring social andcultural factors that influence this development. In order to fulfilthis aim, analysis has been conducted at three different levels:places, projects and people. More specifically, by examining placesand how they develop as destinations; investigating the structure of,and processes within, groups and networks important for destinationdevelopment and by exploring the roles, resources and attitudes ofenterprising people who are seen as key for development. The thesisis based on a research project including three studies of tourismdestinations and projects in Northern Sweden and Scotland.

The social and cultural factors connected to tourism development arein turn part of learning processes, which in this thesis are seen asfundamental mechanisms for processes of development. A frameworkcalled ‘Learning Destinations’ is introduced that demonstrates howimportant social and cultural factors manifest themselves at each ofthe three levels: places, projects and people. History and heritageand rationales are the main cultural factors discussed, whilstinteraction and boundaries are prominent social factors found toinfluence tourism development. It is suggested that the framework of‘Learning Destinations’ may serve as a tool for understanding thecomplexity of local and regional tourism development.

Agbeh, Anthony. "PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING IN A HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM." OpenSIUC, 2015. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/1057.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was threefold: 1) to examine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) instructional approach on Hospitality students' content knowledge (see chapter 1); 2) to examine the effect of the PBL instructional approach on Hospitality students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills (see chapter 1); 3) to examine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning instructional approach on students' attitudes and perceptions of problem solving in Hospitality settings, in order to increase the relevance of their learning and program of study. Students in a Hospitality management course in a large mid-west university participated in this study. This study used a mixed methods approach to collect and analyze data. There were six data sources used in the study: Pre- and Post-Content Knowledge Test, pre- and post- California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) applicable to 4-year-college students, pre- and post- Measure of Epistemological Reflection Survey (a validated tool used by permission from Dr. Baxter Magolda), PBL Rubric, students' reflection journals, and instructor's observation notes. Data were analyzed quantitatively by using SPSS Version 14 to compare the pre- and post-Content Knowledge Tests and pre- and post- California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST). A Wilcoxon signed ranked test, a non-parametric test, an equivalent of dependent test were used to determine a significant difference between the pre- and post-test results. Qualitative data were analyzed using the pre- and post-Measure of Epistemological Reflection (MER) survey, student reflective journal entries, and instructor's observation. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the content knowledge mean of the pre- and post-content knowledge test after teaching the students using PBL. The result also shows that there was no significant difference in the pre- and post-test of the California Critical Thinking Skill Test (CCTST) after teaching the students using PBL. The result also showed the students' problem solving skills improved after solving the four closed loop case problems. Students' perception and attitude of PBL were positive, although the students indicated some negatives, such as increase in work load, time wasted, uncertainty of their answers, and being confused at the beginning of the learning process, as this approach was new to them. Nevertheless, the findings indicated that PBL helps students to build a capacity for self-directed learning, foster team work, improve their communications skills, manage their learning time table, be active learners, find relevant and valuable information, and apply problem-solving skills. The students' attitudes and perceptions were positive and encouraging, despite encountering some issues during the intervention. These findings have theoretical, practical, and research implications.

Carmichael, Robbie Jane. "A Narrative Inquiry into the Learning Experiences of Deaf Individuals in Tennis." ScholarWorks, 2011. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1160.

Full text
Abstract:
Deaf individuals do not have equal access to participating in sports as their hearing counterparts in the United States. Tennis is one sport to which this lack of access applies. The purpose of this qualitative, narrative research study was to add to the research literature by illuminating the learning experiences of Deaf individuals in tennis in the United States. This study was built on a tripartite conceptual framework consisting of motivation, interaction, and the flow experience. The study explored how tennis influenced other aspects in the lives of Deaf individuals. These other aspects included exposure to the game, learning opportunities, underlying motivations, and social interaction. Participants were 9 Deaf adults who had tennis playing experience. Data were collected from the Deaf Tennis Profile Questionnaire, Deaf Tennis Experience Questionnaire, and a Deaf Tennis Videophone Interview. A priori typological and inductive analyses were used to search for themes and patterns from the data. Findings indicated that learning the game of tennis was relevant to participants' lives. As individuals experienced improvements in their tennis abilities, positive changes in self-perceptions occurred. Participants reported that experiencing the highs and lows while playing tennis increased their motivation and social interaction. Insights from these Deaf tennis participants will give administrators, physical education teachers, coaches, and recreation professionals a better understanding of more effective ways to provide tennis instruction and skills. Self-confident, skillful Deaf tennis players are better contributors to society as a whole. Participation in sports enhances the confidence, self-worth, self-image, and interaction skills of Deaf persons.

Drummond, Siobhan. "Learning across communities: volunteering for change in the tourism curriculum." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2016. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.716378.

Full text
Abstract:
This research reviews the concept of volunteering in relation to learning and workplace experience in the vocational field of Tourism and Event Management, a relative newcomer to the university sector. It examines the ways in which volunteering is perceived and practised and evaluates its connections with a range of different communities - the academy, the case study institution and wider society. The study considers the potential for learning through volunteering practice to enhance the student experience, while creating and strengthening links across different environments. The local setting for the research is a modem university that has grown rapidly, still adapting to substantial internal changes against a dynamic external background. The literature illustrates that narrow definitions can restrict practices and sometimes prevent learning from crossing existing boundaries. It introduces new ways of viewing volunteering that move the activity into new places, with the potential to transform the student learning experience. Primary data is gathered from undergraduate students on Tourism and Event Management degrees and a range of academic and support staff across the university. Artefacts are used to draw on their volunteering experiences and explore the connections with learning in different environments. Issues around learning as belonging, doing, as experience and becoming are explored in the volunteer workplace and the university, using an established social practice framework. The findings indicate that change is instrumental in learning, creating new opportunities and presenting challenges at the same time. In this case study, barriers to learning are often the unintentional consequences of agentic and structural practices, preventing engagement between different communities, restricting opportunities to transform learning by engaging more with volunteering in the workplace. Changes in identity, pedagogy and structure emerge as key factors for student and staff learning. Reflection on these aspects is recommended to inform future design of the Tourism and Event Management curriculum, where learning can be co-produced in the university and the workplace through volunteering, with the potential to result in positive change for a range of communities of practice.

Oliveira, Isabel Maria Soares Pinto de. "English for tourism : contribution to language use through mobile learning." Doctoral thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/15997.

Abstract:
Doutoramento em Linguística
Tourism is growing and is becoming more competitive. Destinations need to find elements which demonstrate their uniqueness, the singularity which allows them to differentiate themselves from others. This struggle for uniqueness makes economies become more competitive and competition is a central element in the dynamics of Tourism. Technology is also an added value for tourism competitiveness, as it allows destinations to become internationalised and known worldwide. In this scenario, research has increased as a means to study Tourism trends in fields such as sociology and marketing. Nevertheless, there are areas in which there is not much research done and which are fundamental: these are the areas concerned with identities, communication and interpersonal relations. In this regard, Linguistics has a major role for different reasons: firstly, it studies language itself and through it, communication, secondly, language conveys culture and, thirdly, it is by enriching language users that innovation in Tourism and in knowledge, as a whole, is made possible. This innovation, on the other hand, has repercussions in areas such as management, internationalisation and marketing as well. It is, therefore, the objective of this thesis to report on how learning experiences take place in Tourism undergraduate English language classes as well as to give an account of enhanced results in classes where mobile learning was adopted. In this way, an alliance between practice and research was established. This is beneficial for the teaching and learning process because by establishing links between research based insight and practice, the outcome is grounded knowledge which helps make solid educational decisions. This research, therefore, allows to better understand if learners accept working with mobile technologies in their learning process. Before introducing any teaching and learning approach, it was necessary to be informed, as well, of how English for tourism programmes are organised. This thesis also illustrates through the premises of Systemic Functional Linguistics that language use can be enhanced by using mobile technology in Tourism undergraduate language classes.

Abstract:
Food studies offers a powerful lens through which to consider the complexity of travel, given the ways in which food can bring multiple perspectives to the table. The merging of food studies with the well-established tradition of study abroad, then, provides a platform for incorporating critical thinking and fresh perspectives into the discourse surrounding study abroad. How does food studies abroad reflect the opportunities and reify the concerns posed by study abroad in general? I explore this topic through a case study of a University of Oregon food studies abroad program, Food and Culture in Italy, looking specifically at students’ motivations, on-site experience, and perceived outcomes. I employ the lenses of identity, consumption, and experiential learning to discuss the trends that emerge from the data and conclude with a series of recommendations for moving thoughtfully and critically forward with food studies abroad programming.

Abstract:
Tourism education has matured over the past fifty years, and several authors have questioned and presented studies on what should be in the content of tourism programmes offered in higher education. This Doctorate in Professional Studies has also questioned what should be included in the content of the programme to be offered at higher education level; and further, developed a new teaching pedagogy for Girne American University, School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, in North Cyprus. The selected research method has been action research, with two main cycles. The first cycle applied in-depth face-to-face interviews with twenty-two representatives from accrediting bodies, the tourism sector and students. Thematic analysis was used to find common themes and conclusions. After the first cycle, the new tourism programme was developed. A three- way structured professional learning programme which included: class room pedagogies, online pedagogies, and on-the-job training (compared to apprenticeship-style learning) was developed. The second cycle took place with four expert representatives, one from each sector, accreditation bodies and two students; in the form of a focus group. I presented the professional learning programme at the focus group and opened the table for discussion on how the programme could be improved. All of the feedback given was incorporated into the programme. Conclusions showed that there is a requirement for a professional learning programme to meet both sector and student requirements, whilst all stakeholders agreed that classroom pedagogies must also continue. Resources offered must sustain North Cyprus tourism-specific contents, yet include online pedagogies and practical training.

Cultural festivals are both attractions and destinations, which use cultural offerings as thematic elements to attract visitors. These festivals provide their patrons with both education and entertainment. This is further complicated by the large variety of motivations for festival attendees. One important motivation for festival patrons is learning, which can be linked to the construct of mindfulness. Mindful visitors are those who are receptive to educational experiences. When mindful visitors interact with certain setting factors, they exhibit greater satisfaction and greater learning outcomes. This study looks at learning motivated attendees of the Global Fusion Festival, an annual multicultural festival held in Philadelphia, to better understand the relationship between learning motivation and satisfaction and learning outcomes. Increased knowledge of this relationship can lead to better planning and marketing of event functions, particularly with regard to programming of activities.

Malan-Rush, Gunce. "The Relationship Between Learning Styles and the Choice of Learning Environment for Hospitality and Tourism Undergraduate Students." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6114.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between learning styles and the choice of learning environment for Hospitality and Tourism undergraduate students. An anonymous two-part survey was sent to the instructors of Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism Management courses (both online and face-to-face) in four schools in the state of Florida. The survey was designed to gather information related to the following three research questions related to MBTI profiles for undergraduate students in attempt to identify differences between students enrolled in online classes and those in face-to-face classes. In order to determine the probability of predicting course choice behavior of undergraduate Hospitality and Tourism students, the following factors were controlled in this research: age; gender; enrollment status; employment status; university; whether they had taken an online course previously in high school, college, or other places; how many online courses they previously took; and who helped them select the delivery mode of their courses. There were 323 usable responses, which included a majority of the most common types as ESTJ. When the differences between online and face-to-face course students were analyzed through chi-square tests, the results showed significant differences between two groups for all four profiles. Overall, the most common profile for face-to-face students was ESTJ, while the most common profile for online students were ISTP. In order to examine the unique contribution of learning styles on Hospitality and Tourism students’ course choice, a hierarchical logistic regression model was used. The results of the model indicated that only profile one (P1) and profile four (P4) were significant predictors among the four profiles, along with the total number of online courses previously taken. The conclusions suggested that by looking at P1, P4, and toc1, with a 95% confidence level, the probability of students choosing face-to-face classes can be predicted if the students are extrovert, judging, and previously had taken less than five online courses. If learning styles can be determined ahead of time, students can choose appropriate courses, instructors can develop teaching strategies that will match students’ desirable learning styles, and the number of face-to-face and online courses can be adjusted in each program to offer an appropriate number of courses each semester.

Abstract:
This paper describes the use of corporate decision and strategy simulations as a decision-support instrument under varying market conditions in the tourism industry. It goes on to illustrate this use of simulations with an experiment which investigates how successful different market segmentation approaches are in destination management. The experiment assumes a competitive environment and various cycle-length conditions with regard to budget and strategic planning. Computer simulations prove to be a useful management tool, allowing customized experiments which provide insight into the functioning of the market and therefore represent an interesting tool for managerial decision support. The main drawback is the initial setup of a customized computer simulation, which is time-consuming and involves defining parameters with great care in order to represent the actual market environment and to avoid excessive complexity in testing cause-effect-relationships.
The aim of this study is to identify, first, the learning needs of students that study English as a foreign language in a technical course in Tourism and Hotel Management in a state school, and, second, the target needs for work in the market; in addition, the study compares the students` needs and market needs with the course syllabus followed in the school. The data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and documents about the Tourism course and about the English course. The main theoretical framework of this study is based on Hutchinson & Waters (1987/1996), Dudley-Evans & St. John (1998/2005) and Robinson (1991), authors of the approach called ESP - English for Specific Purposes, or Inglês Instrumental, as it is known in Brazil. The analysis of the data confirms that, in both learning and target situations, speaking and listening skills are extremely important. However, the teaching of reading skills for genres such as web sites, brochures, and regulations must be reevaluated and adjusted to the reality of student and market needs. Suggestions are presented for new directions toward making the ESP course under study more suitable for both the learner and the market.

Abstract:
Hospitality and tourism management (HTM) programmes are unique in that they usually emphasize the development of students’ industry and generic skills through means of practical and experiential learning elements. This research attempted to explore the learning experience of students in an HTM programme by comparing three different modes of curriculum delivery: 1) traditional lectures; 2) practical workshops; and 3) internship which are generally provided by local institutions. Students’ learning experiences were assessed through the examination of three indicators: 1) students’ perceptions of their learning environment (PLE); 2) learning approaches applied (LA); and 3) their perceived learning outcomes (PLO). The results showed that the existing instruments being adopted can be positively applied for assessing students’ learning in an HTM programme. Variations in students’ learning experiences were found in different modes of curriculum delivery. A significant relationship among PLE, LA and PLO was also observed which generally followed the Trigwell and Prosser’s 3P Model. The author, based on these findings, has suggested various ways to enhance the learning experience of students in HTM programmes and areas for further improvement if follow-up researches are conducted in the future.

Abstract:
This empirical study provided an in-depth examination of Thai students' English language proficiency, their learning skills and their self-confidence during the application of project-based learning (PBL) in an EFL learning context. The study examined whether PBL could enhance Thai university students' English language proficiency, their learning skills and self- confidence. The method of teaching and learning English language through PBL was a contrast to the current teaching of English in Thailand where it is treated as a subject, not a medium of communication. This is a mixed research study utilising both quantitative and qualitative instruments to collect data from participants. The study was conducted in an EFL classroom in a major regional Thai university. Data were collected from 26 third year students majoring in English enrolled in English for Tourism course. The data were derived from four quantitative instruments including TOEFL® PBT, a writing test, a speaking test and an observation schedule and the rich information was obtained from five qualitative instruments including student surveys, project diaries, open-ended questionnaires, field notes and work-in-progress discussions. The research instruments were utilised for one semester. To investigate the English proficiency of different levels of students, the students were divided into three groups (high, medium and low groups) based on the raw cores collected from the overall results of the three pre-tests (TOEFL® PBT, a writing test and a speaking test)...

Abstract:
Mobile technologies have been adopted into education more and more. New hardware, such as smart phones and tablets, has increased the popularity of mobile technology. There are also many applications created for the fields of education and tourism. This research chose a travel application from Taiwan to apply into a tourism geographic course at the Taiwan Hospitality and Tourism College (THTC). A quasi-experiment design was applied to this study. Two classes/groups participated in the study. One class was the treatment group which used the travel app through teaching scenarios. The other group was the contrast group which used a lecture format with handouts. Both groups were given a pre-test to determine knowledge of Danongdafu Forest Park (DFP), and Taiwan tourism geography. A post-test was administered after eight weeks of teaching activities. Post intervention scores were compared to pre-intervention scores between the two groups. The results of ANOVA showed that there was no statistically significant learning difference between the treatment group and the contrast group. A paired-sample t-test analysis revealed that after eight weeks of teaching DFP content, both groups gained significantly in knowledge. Furthermore, the learning attitudes and interviews of the treatment group students indicated positive responses utilizing m-learning in teaching scenarios. Students indicated a desire to receive m-learning opportunities for future courses.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine tourism students’ perceptions of their Experiential Learning (EL) experiences based on the Predicting Learner Advancement through Cooperative Education (PLACE) four-component model. The research objectives were to ascertain Experiential Learning’s impact on the four components namely Personal Development, Career Development, Work-skills Development and Academic Development. This study fits within the pragmatic paradigm and utilised an explanatory mixed methods research design which requires quantitative data to be collected first with follow-up qualitative data. The data collection instrument for the quantitative data was the PLACE model, which was in the form of a survey questionnaire and the data generating strategy for the qualitative data was individual interviews. The findings of the data were heavily skewed toward the positive end of the spectrum with students viewing the impact of EL on the four components as favourable. Interviews were conducted with participants whose results showed deviations from the norm and had particularly negative experiences. Academic Development had extremely low Cronbach Alphas, which points to poor reliability. This phenomenon was also further explored during the interviews with participants making suggestions for factors to be considered. Recommendations were made to the three stakeholders of EL namely students, employers and academic coordinators in order to ensure improved Experiential Learning programmes and maximised student benefit.

Prior, Gerard Anthony. "Facilitating individualised learning solutions : the case of hospitality and tourism owner/managers in Greater Belfast." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/37194.

Full text
Abstract:
This research addresses the question: How can the facilitation of individualised learning solutions for SME owner/managers be reconceptualised? In answering this question a questionnaire was utilised within a comparative case study design to conduct semistructured interviews. Subjects were drawn from a diverse range of hospitality and tourism firms including hotels, guest houses, pub/restaurants, coffee shops and a brewery. The research addresses wider issues affecting training and learning contexts rather than simply training alternatives. Such issues included, conceptions of learning, workplace learning environments, owner/learner identity, managerial skills and entrepreneurial talent. Consequently, conclusions were drawn highlighting that accessing learning solutions must be driven by the owner/manager. Such learning is identified as being available within the workplace or from the accessible open curriculum of the external environment. This open curriculum includes, working in other organizations, visiting benchmark firms as customers, accessing existing, or devising individualised training courses. This led to the development of the ‘owner/manager learner access model’ which reconceptualises how the owner/manager can move towards accessing individualised learning solutions. The model illustrates the positions of owner/managers in relation to their relative levels of activity in pursuing self-generated access to learning. From this, the requirement of a new layer of learning to help owner/managers develop a propensity for the acquisition of learning is identified. This layer is suggested as a pre-requisite to training in specific managerial skills. It involves equipping the owner/manager with the capacity to identify sources of new knowledge and skills and the ability to gain access to them. Two additional conclusions then emerge. Firstly, the ability to access self-generated learning is an entrepreneurial trait. Secondly, there is a link between delegation and moving to the domain of the self-generated learner. Delegation allows the time necessary to identify, develop and participate in new learning activities.

McGladdery, Christine Anne. "The relationship between international educational tourism and global learning in South African high school learners." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/60509.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a growing demand in the literature for rigorous empirical research to test the underpinning assumption of international education theory, namely that global learning occurs as a consequence of international travel. Through the application of a global learning survey instrument to 1152 Grade 11 learners in 16 South African exclusive independent high schools, evidence is provided to indicate that significant global learning only occurs when the international travel experience is facilitated to encourage learning, when there is a desire by learners to engage with cultural differences at their travel destination, and when learners feel comfortable expressing their opinions within their tour group. Furthermore, some types of international educational tourism are more conducive to global learning than others. Additionally, a conceptual, process-driven model of international educational tourism is proposed based on the synthesis of educational tourism, international education, experiential education and global learning theories. The model is tested and refined through analysis of the data collected from the questionnaire. By conceptualising educational tourism as a process it overcomes the limitations associated with segment-based definitions and in doing so demonstrates the potential for hybridising educational tourism with other sectors of the industry. Finally, owing to the expense involved with international travel, non-travel related factors are identified which encourage global learning in high school children. Non-coerced participation in community service and possessing an altruistic disposition are found to be the most influential. The implication of this finding is that there are substantially less expensive and more accessible means of developing global learning, which is essential in South Africa where huge discrepancies exist in terms of financial wealth and quality of education.

Abstract:
The purpose of this quantitative study was to compare self-directed learning readiness and online learning readiness between hospitality and tourism college students and industry professionals. The Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) was used for measuring self-directed learning readiness. After examining the reliability and validity indices of the modified Online Learning Readiness Scale (OLRS), it was used in the context of hospitality and tourism for the measurement of online learning and training readiness. Two different study populations, hospitality and tourism college students and hospitality and tourism industry professionals, were identified for the purpose of this study. Data were obtained via online anonymous links which included the demographic and descriptive questions and the two instruments (the SDLRS and the OLRS) through Qualtrics. A total of 550 usable responses (298 from hospitality and tourism college students and 252 from hospitality and tourism industry professionals) were collected for statistical analysis. Using confirmatory factor analysis, the modified OLRS was confirmed as a valid and reliable instrument. The mean score differences on the SDLRS and the dimensions of the OLRS between hospitality and tourism college students and industry professionals were investigated using independent samples t tests. Although there was a significant difference in the SDLRS scores, there were no significant differences in the mean scores of the dimensions of the OLRS among hospitality and tourism college students and industry professionals. Finally, the relationship between the SDLRS score and the dimensions of the OLRS among hospitality and tourism college students and industry professionals were tested and reported a significant and positive correlation among these variables. This study contributes to the knowledge of self-directed learning readiness and online learning readiness among hospitality and tourism college students and industry professionals. This study can stimulate more research on the impact of self-directed learning readiness and online learning readiness in the educational and industrial practices in the hospitality and tourism field.

Fernández, Ana Belén Martin. "Tourism and economic development : retaining competitive advantage through clustering, learning and innovation in the Costa del Sol." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/560723.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates the role of clustering, learning and innovation in retaining competitiveness in an existing tourism area in a peripheral region of Europe. To do this it draws on the tourism resort area known as the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. Structurally, it focuses on hotel and catering businesses, which are considered to be at the heart of the tourism industry. Tourism is shown not only to be fundamental to the development ofthis coastal agglomeration, but also critical to the development of the province of Malaga (of which the Costa del Sol is a part) and the wider region of Andalucia. Hence the need to examine the evolution oftourism, the sources of competitive advantage and how such advantage can be retained in a globalised marketplace. The key proposition is that retaining competitive advantage can best be achieved through learning and innovation and that agglomerations provide a milieu in which learning and innovation are stimulated. Agglomeration theory and the role of learning and innovation are tested through an examination of the spatial and temporal evolution of hotel and catering businesses and through questionnaire surveys covering these businesses. In particular, the surveys are directed at addressing the issues of learning and innovation and assessing the extent to which the Costa del Sol operates as a 'learning region'. Questionnaire work met with severe problems of non-response despite being undertaken in conjunction with local business organisations. Nevertheless, sufficient responses were obtained to provide some tentative answers to the questions being posed and to provide the foundation for further research. The principal conclusions were that the Costa del Sol has acted as a growth pole and seedbed for business development, and that learning and innovation are promoted as much by competition as by co-operation. Finally, some public policy implications are drawn from these conclusions.

Abstract:
The economy of The Bahamas relies heavily on leisure visitor tourism (cruise ships, resorts, holiday trips) which leaves the country vulnerable to changes in visitor travel habits. Because the country is so reliant on investments in resorts, casinos and cruise ships, it leaves a wide capacity of other touristic opportunities. One opportunity is sports tourism. The purpose of this study is to analyze the strategic board capability of the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event’s (RK3DE) board governance using the Ferkins and Shilbury (2012) model as the theoretical construct and make recommendations regarding the application of these successful aspects to the governance of world-class annual sport championships in The Bahamas. Members of the RK3DE board were interviewed using specific questions developed from the Ferkins and Shilbury (2012) model. Findings showed the Ferkins and Shilbury (2012) model concepts hold true however remained very broad in its prescriptions. On the other hand, a revised model provides a more specific guide to the necessary attributes and capabilities that need to be in place to run an effective and strategically capable board for world-class annual sport championships.

Abstract:
Thesis (DTech (Tourism and Hospitality Management))--Cape Technikon, 2003.
Many scholars in the social sciences, especially in the Hospitality industry have seen many changes over the years, based on research conducted in the workplace. Skills seem to be a popular research agenda. The literature is rich on how changes have occurred overtime in the hospitality industry workplace. With such a competitive environment this industry is functioning, it is important that entry level employees or current employees in the workplace possess a variety of non-technical skills. Once attained, these employees, will benefit the Hospitality industry, as happy clients / guests, will return, which will create a profitable workplace. It is vitally important that tertiary institutions pay specific attention to students and graduates, that they obtain non-technical skills, via co-operative education programmes, with a focus on the real employment world outside of education. This will equip them to find a job that could be satisfying and rewarding. Industry on the other hand should identify important non-technical skills and conduct on the job training, inducing such skills. The researcher found that the need for willingness to adapt and eagerness to learn was a consistent theme. The non-technical skills of communication, teamwork, initiative, problem solving and decision making were also highly valued. Respondents were dissatisfied with the quality of entry-level employees beginning their careers, especially graduates who lack non-technical skills. A need was seen for a long-term view of preparation of young people for work, beginning with parents and guardians, who should lay the foundations. Alongside them, educators should be fostering good attitudes and a love for learning, as well as lecturing verbal, numerical and other specific skills. Successful co-operative education programmes often could involve three key role-players, that of employers (managers / supervisors), students / graduates in this context and the tertiary institution they are studying at Technikon’s providing vocationally orientated co-operative education programmes, therefore need to continually examine what skills employers (managers / supervisors) consider to be important with regard to the skills required by students, entering the workplace. This research study revealed that there is a gap between the skills that students acquire in their formal studies and what employers (managers / supervisors) require. If this need is not recognised, the programmes, institution and students will suffer. The study is aimed at making a contribution towards co-operative education programmes in Hospitality and Tourism at technikons by identifying what non-technical skills the Border Technikon is not addressing. It was found that the skills not being adequately addressed fall in the non-technical skills category. The study identifies the non-technical skills required by employers (managers / supervisors) of Border Technikon Hospitality and Tourism students undertaking experiential learning.

LOBOSCO, Gianni. "SIZING LANDSCAPES A Scenario-Based Approach Addressing Landscape Changes due to Infrastructure Developments, Learning from Touristic Contexts." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Ferrara, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11392/2487916.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the opportunities and challenges of using a scenario-based approach, both as a negotiation and a performative format, for addressing landscape transformations in highly-complex and unstable contexts, where infrastructural works are needed to face environmental and socio-economic evolutions. By reporting the different steps which have brought to the consolidation of an operative model in collaboration with infrastructure developers, the thesis provides a framework for embedding alternative landscape scenarios into the decision making process since its very beginning. In fact, as stakeholders and developers need to rely on new tools for better communicating and imaging the prospective landscape their interventions will produce, researchers and professionals in the fields of landscape planning and architecture have to find new ways to assist them in building strategies which could adapt to potential different future scenarios. At first, this work presents a selection of pilot experiences carried out within two exemplar and challenging contexts, chosen for their being pressured by extremely variable dynamics: riverscapes and touristic areas. The aim of these projects and researches was to understand how data and forecasts provided to infrastructural developers through quantitative and analytical models could effectively be converted into landscape dimensions, and so processed into exploratory scenarios. Thereafter, by reviewing the T.H.ER.E. project experience, the thesis reports a first empirical attempt of sizing of a complex multipurpose infrastructure in touristic territories. In response to the issues raised by that experience and reworking other disciplines’ workflows, an operative model based on the development of alternative landscape scenarios is postulated: the ‘Sizing Landscapes Model’. A specific early-implementation of the model, concerning the infrastructural systems and contexts which a land reclamation authority has to manage, is then reported and analysed in order to test the instrument and its workflow, as well as its potential effects on strategic planning and the developer decision making. Following a ‘research-by-design’ methodology, the research attempts to demonstrate the convenience of overturning the attitude towards landscape in the common process of designing and planning infrastructures. A scenario-based approach should promote a more prospective outlook allowing to encompass uncertainties, risks and strategic visions into the evolving boundaries of future landscapes.

Abstract:
As the Head of Department, Department of Tourism at Centurion Academy, I identified an innovative idea to transform my mentoring practice. The Advanced Diploma in Tourism Management is offered at two campuses – the main campus in Centurion and the campus situated in Klerksdorp. I was based on the main campus and served as a peer mentor for my mentee, who was based on the Klerksdorp campus. The concept of blended mentoring that focuses on face-to-face mentoring and e-mentoring was opted for, due to the distance between my mentee and me. The purpose of the mentoring was to facilitate my mentee’s professional development by adapting a whole brain® approach. My mentee, on the other hand, transformed her teaching practice by means of facilitating whole brain® learning in the Accounting module. We were both responsible for presenting the Accounting module – I was the examiner and followed a whole brain® approach (derived from previous study) and it was my mentee’s second year of lecturing Accounting. Adapting a whole brain® approach empowered us to transform our respective practices. Whole brain® learning focuses on the theoretical framework of the metaphorical Herrmann whole brain® model. The Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI®), which quantifies the degree of an individual’s preference for specific thinking modes, was used to assess my mentee, my mentee’s students who were enrolled for the Accounting module and my own thinking style preference. The data derived from the HBDI® served as baseline data for the study. An action research design was followed by both my mentee and me. We both followed our own action research spiral, which overlapped. My action research cycle commenced with a face-to-face mentoring session in Pretoria with my mentee. The study included two visits by me to the Klerksdorp campus. During these visits I observed learning opportunities presented by my mentee. Quantitative and qualitative data, a part from the HBDI®, was gathered during the study. Quantitative data included a feedback questionnaire that my mentee’s students had to complete after the completion of each Accounting theme and included the students’ marks. Qualitative data that was gathered included interviews with my mentee and her students, field notes from observations, audio-visual material from my mentee’s learning opportunities and personal documents. The findings indicate that a whole brain® approach to mentoring and a whole brain® approach to facilitating learning in a teaching practice contributed to my and my mentee’s professional development. Other additional aspects that can be incorporated in a mentoring and teaching practice to ensure lifelong learning and a continuous transformation of one’s practice were identified during the final reflection on the action research cycle that was recorded.

Zanatta, Anne Marie. "Using wikis for collaborative writing in the english for tourism classroom." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/482229.

Full text
Abstract:
The recent surge in studies and literature on the use of wikis and other Web 2.0 tools in language learning emphasizes the pedagogical benefits of using these tools for collaborative writing tasks in the Foreign Language classroom. Nonetheless, existing research regarding collaborative writing projects involving more than two writers is limited. This may, in part, be due to the fact that writing is a complex and challenging act which becomes even more so when it is collaborative and involves more than two people. Furthermore, the implementation of a wiki or any other digital collaborative writing tool may serve to complicate rather than facilitate it even more. This dissertation presents a mixed methods case study of the use of a wiki for a collaborative writing project carried out in the English for Tourism classroom at the higher education level. The subjects of the study, 63 first-year students enrolled in a 4-year degree program in Tourism Studies at a private institution in Barcelona, were participants of an English for Tourism language course divided into 3 different class groups based on language proficiency and led by 3 different teachers. A total of 18 small working groups of 3 or 4 students participated in the project known as Touripedia which took place over a 6 month period divided into 3 project phases. Findings from this study reveal how student use and perceptions of the wiki tool differ according to the three phases of the collaborative writing project. The overriding goal of this research is to provide understanding of how the wiki influences learner processes and perceptions when involved in a collaborative writing task. By offering insight and guidelines which increase learning opportunities and minimize the challenges of effective use of the wiki tool, this study also aims to assist language teachers considering the implementation of such activities into their own classrooms and may also help software designers to better understand the needs of both learners and teachers for the continued development of collaborative tools which specifically facilitate language learning processes.
Abstract:
Wildlife ecotourism is becoming a well-established industry due to its ability to contribute to local economies and the growing tourist demand for opportunities to observe endangered or rare species. Wildlife ecotourism is also recognized for its ability to provide free choice-learning settings for visitors, through the use of environmental interpretation programs. The process of environmental interpretation is a communication phenomenon thought to hold the potential to contribute to conservation by educating and raising awareness amongst tourists about environmental issues. Using a qualitative phenomenological research design, this research examined the environmental interpretation programs of great white shark ecotourism operators in Gansbaai, South Africa, from the perspective of tourists. Findings indicated that while tourists did not primarily choose to embark on shark tourism excursions to learn more about the species, many participants became slightly more informed about great whites and the surrounding environment after their experience. It was also found that most participants did not experience nervousness or fear when in the water with great whites, but instead felt an emotional connection and appreciation for the animal, causing a shift towards pro-conservation attitudes.

Abstract:
There are two enquiries undertaken in this work which is an investigation of learning strategies employed by students of English for Tourism in the British context, and an evaluation of textbooks already used for teaching this programme in Taiwan and relevant ones published in the United Kingdom. It is hoped that this work will have direct implications for pedagogy and learning processes of the English for Tourism programme in the Taiwanese context. This thesis is made up of four parts. The first part is Chapter 1 which investigates general broad backgrounds in the Taiwanese context. It also deals with the debate on the improvement of English language teaching in this context. It further discusses how this context relates to this work. The second part includes Chapters 2, 3, and 4, offering the theoretical framework on which an empirical research and a desk-based study of textbooks are based. Chapter 2 primarily examines the features of English for Tourism by taking account of the general key issues of ESP relevant to needs analysis, content and language, and methodology, and the specific crucial issues in relation to the target situation in the tourism industry, tourism education and training, and cultural content. It further postulates that communicative language teaching and learning strategies are closely relevant to the efficiency of ESP teaching. These are defined and explored in depth in Chapters 3 and 4 respectively. The third part consists of an empirical research and a desk-based study (Chapters 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9). Chapter 5 discusses research methodology indicating that a qualitative approach has been preferred to a quantitative approach. The empirical research will be based on participant observations (Chapter 6) and semi-structured interviews (Chapter 7). It will be followed by a desk-based study of textbooks (Chapter 9). Chapters 6 and 7 are mainly descriptive. Chapter 8 interprets the major findings of this empirical research, discusses the issues they raise and goes on to suggest improvements to the pedagogy and learning processes in the Taiwanese context. It indicates that social strategies and social interaction bothinside and outside the classroom are the most significant factors for learning processes. It suggests furthermore that a combination model of notional-functional and task-based approaches is essential for the effective English for Tourism syllabuses and methodologies in the Taiwanese context. Chapter 9 is a desk-based study of textbooks to evaluate and select appropriate and useful textbook for teaching English for Tourism in the Taiwanese context. The final part is Chapter 10. This chapter reviews the principal themes in the preceding chapters, and offers principles of approach which guide the teaching and learning of English for Tourism in the Taiwanese context.

Abstract:
This research lies at the intersection of four different areas: French for specific purposes; discourse analysis; learner autonomy and web based learning. We’ve collected a corpus which provided data for designing contextualized discursive activities exploiting the web (web-based learning : web as a communication tool, web as artifact integrated into the learning environment ) in the context of FOS for tourism. We chose to focus on the discursive activity because it allows us to answer two questions: - What should be taught / learned in a context of FOS for tourism ? - What are the characteristics of speech involved ? Our corpus comprises two printed travel guides on Vietnam (approximately 1000 pages) and oral discourse transcribed from records of tour guide speeches (about 10 hours in total). It is therefore both data mining in the corpus, the transfer of this data for applied linguistic and their direct reuse in the design of learning activities. The transfer is the application of the conclusions drawn from the analysis of the corpus for the development of discursive activities while the reuse of these data consists in extracting corpus elements to integrate them into discursive activities. To analyze the corpus, to structure and to program discursive activities, we used the XML and developed scripts for computer operations (analysis and learning activities ). Finally, our research leads to a didactic perspective. We recommend the discursive approach for the design of syllabus and discursive learning activities. We illustrate this approach with some learning activities. It should be noted that this is an exploratory study and not an experimental one

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Tourism and Hospitality Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
Community engagement in universities of technology is evolving to become a game-changer in addressing the economic challenges of the country (Erasmus, 2005:4). Service learning (SL) as a form of community engagement is promoted in higher education, as a learning paradigm. Conway, Amel and Gerwien (2009:238) encourage enquiry into the benefits of this pedagogy and the partnerships involved, as faculties curriculate and adopt the service learning model into current programmes (Lazarus, Erasmus, Hendricks, Nduna & Slamat, 2008:60-61). The SL project of the Tourism Management Department at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is distinctive in design from the generic social-change focussed projects within Universities of Technology (UoTs). Its outcomes are based on the development of business plans for small and medium enterprises for implementation. The assessment of this interactive learning process was essential to determine whether it yielded any positive change in the participants. Thus the aim of the study is to determine the success or otherwise of the service learning project, so as to ensure that the small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) community and students benefit from the Tourism Management project. The study sample included nine small and medium tourism entrepreneurs (SMTEs) and 178 third year tourism management students. From the sample two SMTEs participated in one-on-one interviews and six students participated in a focus-group interview. Action research was undertaken for this study, and census sampling was adopted to collect quantitative and qualitative data from project participants. The ATLAS.ti 7 data analysis programme was employed to process the qualitative data, and SPSS 22.0 software was utilised to develop frequency tables from the quantitative data. All data was triangulated to obtain conclusions. Fifty-two percent (52%) of student participants learnt leadership skills, with 64% indicating essential benefits on business skills. Company visions were shared throughout the collaborative process, and 76% of SMTE responses, directed to the students’ solutions, being highly innovative for their businesses; and these were implemented to improve business processes. The findings of the study attested to the SL model improving reciprocal learning, and having positive benefits for all partners involved. In continuing the essential dialogue on implementation of SL in higher education, sustainable partnerships in SL projects are essential to ensure continued positive results. The majority of participants responded positively to a willingness to participate in a similar project, which is a positive indicator of the benefits of the project. Implications for future studies point towards a need for continued monitoring of growth performance in the participating small and medium enterprises.

CAPES
This study deals with the relationship between fishing and visitor flow as a way of building the person in the village of Moreré, located on the island of Boipeba. The eclectic and versatile technical domain of different fishing modalities is analyzed based on their forms of subjectivation, skills, modes of sociality (forms of reciprocity, organization of the domestic space, etc.) and their learning pathways and social engagement in a Monographic perspective. The construction of the fisherman is perceived from its associations with other humans, artifacts, animals and the environment in general, and analyzed in a dialogical way in relation to the construction of the anthropologist himself, immersed in certain flows and specific technical fields developed during his formation, and putting them in communication as you perform your work. The text seeks to reflect the seasonal character of the village and instigate contemporary discussions about fishing and the peculiarities of such practice in a place whose dynamics integrates a constant and growing movement of tourists.

Robbins, Molly M. "What is the 'Economic Value' of learning English in Spain?" Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/691.

Abstract:
This paper uses historical and economic references to evaluate the economic value of learning English in Spain. Seeing that English is the lingua franca in politics, business, and technology, it is a necessary skill for Spanish citizens to possess in order to efficiently interact in foreign relations of all kinds. Due to Franco’s harsh language policies, and Spain’s ineffective education system, Spain has lacked the same linguistic exposure to foreign languages—especially English—than the rest of Europe. By referencing the previous literature written about the relationship between language and earnings, this paper seeks to find the economic incentive for Spaniards to learn English. The six issues introduced by language economist, Francois Grin, provide an economic, cultural, and social compass to evaluate the overall impact English language learning would have on the Spanish labor market and national economy. The six issues analyze the relevance language has on economic processes, human capital, social investments, policies, wage distribution, and the general market. With tourism as Spain’s most lucrative business sector, better skills in English communication would only add to its economic success. While the Spanish government has named English as one of the seven basic skills within the labor market, effective teaching programs still have to be developed.

Abstract:
The peculiarity of the tourism products and the new competition from OTAs requires travel agents to provide a consulting service, necessary in order to preserve their long-term profitability. As a result, many tour operators have begun to provide to travel agents with free digital training (online electronic platforms, webinars, CDs and DVDs) and they can use this service whenever and wherever they want. The moderate costs, the reinforcement of the distribution channel and the loyalty of travel agents are the main objectives that prompted tour operator to provide this type of training. Despite the growing interest shown by the industry, there are few academic studies that have examined this phenomenon. For this reason, we choose to conduct a qualitative exploratory research to understand to understand and deepen in all its aspects; main objective of the study is to investigate whether and how the supply of complimentary services, in particular digital training services, affects the buyer-seller relationship between a tour operator who provide e-learning service and a travel agency that benefits from that service. The research took place in two different phases: a preliminary phase of participant observation and a second step of analysis in which was used the multiple case study method. The research results confirm that the relationship between buyers and sellers within the tourism industry is positively influenced by the free digital training services, when these are perceived as real opportunities for growth and stability for the travel agencies. Thus, the results of this study lay the groundwork for a subsequent quantitative development aimed at testing an impact assessment model of the phenomenon.

Lawani, Abdelaziz. "THREE ESSAYS ON THE APPLICATION OF MACHINE LEARNING METHODS IN ECONOMICS." UKnowledge, 2018. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/agecon_etds/68.

Abstract:
Over the last decades, economics as a field has experienced a profound transformation from theoretical work toward an emphasis on empirical research (Hamermesh, 2013). One common constraint of empirical studies is the access to data, the quality of the data and the time span it covers. In general, applied studies rely on surveys, administrative or private sector data. These data are limited and rarely have universal or near universal population coverage. The growth of the internet has made available a vast amount of digital information. These big digital data are generated through social networks, sensors, and online platforms. These data account for an increasing part of the economic activity yet for economists, the availability of these big data also raises many new challenges related to the techniques needed to collect, manage, and derive knowledge from them. The data are in general unstructured, complex, voluminous and the traditional software used for economic research are not always effective in dealing with these types of data. Machine learning is a branch of computer science that uses statistics to deal with big data. The objective of this dissertation is to reconcile machine learning and economics. It uses threes case studies to demonstrate how data freely available online can be harvested and used in economics. The dissertation uses web scraping to collect large volume of unstructured data online. It uses machine learning methods to derive information from the unstructured data and show how this information can be used to answer economic questions or address econometric issues. The first essay shows how machine learning can be used to derive sentiments from reviews and using the sentiments as a measure for quality it examines an old economic theory: Price competition in oligopolistic markets. The essay confirms the economic theory that agents compete for price. It also confirms that the quality measure derived from sentiment analysis of the reviews is a valid proxy for quality and influences price. The second essay uses a random forest algorithm to show that reviews can be harnessed to predict consumers’ preferences. The third essay shows how properties description can be used to address an old but still actual problem in hedonic pricing models: the Omitted Variable Bias. Using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) it shows that pricing errors in hedonic models can be reduced by including the description of the properties in the models.

Abstract:
This study investigates and describes the phenomenon of ‘technical tourism’, in the case of wind power plants in Sweden. The main purpose of the study is a greater understanding of a field which to date has remained largely uncharted. Technical tourism is a type of visits to a production site, where the technical aspect of the production is the main focal point for the visitor. The definition of technical tourism is based on concepts within ‘Industrial tourism’. Technical tourism is argued to be a subcategory of Industrial tourism. The study, conducted in collaboration between KTH and Vattenfall, resulted in two complementing parts. Part one, ’Vinkraftsturism: En studie av teknisk turism med särskilt fokus på vindkraftsparker’, is a theoretical description of technical tourism (hereafter referred to as ‘Rapporten’). Part two, ‘Kommunikationsmanual: Vindkraftsturism’, a communications manual based on the results of the study and tailored for Vattenfall to use when informing various stakeholders about technical tourism (hereinafter ‘Manualen’). Material for the two parts of the thesis was gathered through interviews and literature reviews. The informants where gathered in and around one single wind park in northern Sweden. Stakeholders from both the municipality and local/regional businesses were included in the study. ‘Rapporten’ — The theoretical review of technical tourism in a wind power plant deals with benefits and conflicts which may occur when interfacing with the local community and other stakeholders. A model for stakeholder assessment is presented and used to find key relationships between involved parties. It further describes the importance of cooperation and finding common points of identification between the host company and the region. Two factors which are needed to efficiently establish technical tourism. ‘Manualen’ — The communications manual is designed with the characteristic democratic perspective of ‘Education for sustainable development’. Furthermore it presents a workshop structure and a summary of similar projects both national and international. The study showed a variety of benefits (five of them) from technical tourism, and also some potential conflicts. The study also highlighted the importance of collaboration between stakeholders, both through the informants’ statements and explored in previous academic works. It also states that the democratic process and the participants’ view of themselves as democratic subjects, are important factors when communicating technical tourism. The study presents a new definition of technical tourism.

Abstract:
Tourism is becoming an ever more important part of the national economy. In advanced economies, the majority of inhabitants are employed in the services sector, which includes tourism. Currently tourism is at the peak of its development in the Czech Republic. A new, modern infrastructure is being built to connect up the natural and cultural treasures. My personal judgement is that it is primarily the finances from European funds, which have been streaming into the country for several years now, that have a large influence in this development. I see the market deficit in the CR to be poor communications between individual stakeholders. The comprehensive interconnection of services, information systems and tourist destinations. The aim of my work is to propose possible future cooperation for individual original, attractive stakeholders in experiential tourism within the territories of the Czech Republic, above all the Jindřichův Hradec district with its overlap into Lower Austria (Waldviertel). These stakeholders will then jointly form an area where both marketing and the professions are connected; this is known in the EU under the title of a tourism learning area (TLA). They can also be understood as destinations where individual stakeholders involved in experiential tourism are interconnected. The basic idea of the TLA seems relatively simple, however its implementation requires precise coordination and multilateral cooperation, and it is this that I want to achieve within this thesis.

Blaison, Marjorie. Thesis, Perpignan, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020PERP0040.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the evolution of the tourist system with regard to intra stay tourist mobility. Indeed, many changes are at work in terms of consumption logics. In contrast to standardized offers, tourists are more than ever in search of authentic tourist experiences. In hope to satisfy them and sustain their development, territories must adapt. The mobility that takes place during the stay therefore embodies a major development challenge. By reflecting tourism practices, which generally extend over several territories, they give key indications to the actors in charge of tourism development. Although the theme of intra stay mobility is widespread in the scientific literature, no research has paid attention to the mechanisms of reciprocal adjustments that take place between the different actors, which impact the realization of practices. The theoretical frameworks of organizational learning and performance are particularly well suited to understanding these interactions between actors. This thesis therefore proposes to study the organization of tourism activity, in the light of intra stay mobility, at a particularly rich moment in terms of coordination between tourism actors. Argelès-sur-Mer, a seaside resort located in the south of France, in the Occitanie, Pyrénées- Méditerranée region, constitutes the main field of study. This territory is specific because of the majority of campsites. Through a qualitative approach and mixed methods that integrate tourists, professionals and institutional actors, we have been able to contribute to the understanding of the links between tourism practices and actors' strategies allowing to rethink the current organization of tourism

Abstract:
The research is focused on heritage education and its ability to ensure the conservation andtransmission of heritage to future generations. The objective of the research is both to describe the place of heritage education in the Moroccanschool system, and to understand how the practices of heritage education could promote itsconservation. The research is based on a survey carried out in the heart of two Moroccanschools, with students and teachers and on observations of the reactions of students during theirconfrontation with their material heritage in the field, another survey is carried out with theassistance from an argan cooperative planted on the territory of the argan biosphere reservewith students in which the intangible heritage of the argan biosphere reserve is highlighted. This thesis proposes, in a first part, a return to the history of the concept of "biosphere reserve"and its direct link with the conservation of heritage is presented to then state our field of research"the argan biosphere reserve" and its educational potential. From the definition of the RBA as protected land of an educational nature, we try to understandthe implication of education in the conservation of heritage. The second part focuses on theimportance of tourism practices, which can also be applied in a school setting, in theconservation of heritage, in other words the use of tourism as a means of raising awareness ofheritage conservation. Thus, we believe that heritage conservation is a global objective thatinvolves the local population, living around a heritage, but also visitors passing through thearea. This is what we will try to demonstrate through a questionnaire launched on variousplatforms of travelers to understand their interest in heritage conservation. Finally, in the thirdpart, we will try to observe the impact of formal heritage education on students and analyze itscapacity to develop a feeling of belonging and responsibility towards heritage. Official textsdefine formal heritage education as a means of educating for citizenship, tolerance, nationalhistory, the construction and transmission of values, developing a sense of belonging, toappropriate an identity and to preserve the heritage (the national charter of education andtraining, 1999). Indeed, heritage education has its origins in the World Heritage Conventions (1972), theIntangible Heritage Convention (2003) and the European Faro Convention (2005). Theseexpress that heritage education spreads a sense of responsibility, of attachment of individuals to their heritage, they consider education as a means of developing and preserving humanitarianheritage.Starting from the definition of heritage education, which today is based on the transmission ofinformation, the conservation of heritage and territorial development, research has focused onthe links between education and the conservation of heritage under two different angles. Thefirst project focused on the role of the educational institution in the dissemination of values infavor of heritage, the second project is oriented towards the use of learning workshops to ensurethe conservation of intangible heritage, it means to set up, in the hearts of schools andcooperatives based on the RBA, learning workshops for students and visitors, allowingterritorial development and heritage conservation

Abstract:
In order to introduce innovations successfully in a company is vital to have a continuous process of learning and knowledge creation, and in small and medium-sized companies this learning process is centered on the entrepreneur´s character. In service companies, particularly those belonging to the tourism segment, the use of innovations is an essential condition for survival, and besides seasonality that characterizes tourism services, the segment faces a highly unstable environment, with customers looking for differentiated services more and more. Hence, the present study identified the types of innovation used by small and medium-sized tourism companies in Aracaju and analyzed how entrepreneurs learn to innovate. To achieve this goal, a conceptual model was built based on the type of innovation used by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD, 2005), according to Larsson´s interorganizational learning concept et al. (1998), learning type adopted by Conlon (2004) and Nonaka´s and Takeuchi´s learning dimension models (1997), Rae and Carswell (2000) and Politis (2005). The research strategy adopted was to study multiple cases and eight cases concerning small and medium-sized hotels/inns and travel agencies in Aracaju city. To collect data, we used a semistructured interview guide, applied personally to the owners of the hotels / inns and travel agencies. In addition, in order to ensure the quality of the study, we also used the techniques of document analysis and direct observation. From the data analysis it was possible to verify that the surveyed companies are trying to innovate in different ways, and the implemented innovations include the four types of innovation defined by the OECD (2005): service innovations, process, organizational and marketing. Concerning the influence of the entrepreneurial learning for introducing these innovations, it was found that the entrepreneurs undergo a continuous learning process to innovate, and this learning occurs both as individual and from established relationships with other individuals (group learning) or institutions (interorganizational learning) being individual learning the one that occurs through observation and practical experience of the entrepreneur, highlighted as a major form of learning for innovation.

Abstract:
A system to regulate both quality and sustainability regarding Swedish tourism industry is under way. In order for the system to be successfull it needs to be accompanied by an education, in this case a net based education is studied. High requirements are demanded for a successful net based education for a sustainable tourism industry. This is valid both for the didactic area,  which is how an education is structured and planned and in the organisational area, which is how and education best is implemented in a company. The aim with this study is to increase the understandings of which aspects that are important for  developers  if this net based education. The study was conducted at three hostels in Stockholm with surrondings.  Both managers and  employees participated in the study.  The managers where interviewed and got to answer a questionniare. The employees participated in a workshop. The outcome of this study indicates that education is  needed for  a successful system. Following the resut an analysis and discussion from where a  couple of  conclusions and recommendations is derived  for a successful  development  of a net based education in quality and sustainability for hostels. These are in summary  that: The education should consist to a great amount social activities. The education should promote questioned reflections in collaboration with others. The education should be relevant for every participant. It should exist a common part which is the same for every participant. Good leadership is of most importance when implementing a new education. The education should be attached with sufficient implementation information. A net based forum should be established as a complement to the education.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the larger sphere of non-general French and more precisely on French for specific purposes targeting the hospitality and tourism sector. Its objective is to show to what extent the French for hospitality and tourism courses offered in Kenyan public universities meet the needs of learners. The study takes a learner centred systemic approach. Quantitative and qualitative data-collection methods were used. An analysis of learners’ needs was conducted with the learners. The views of different actors, namely, teachers and industry professionals were also sought. The results indicate the existence of needs in all parameters studied. These needs were mainly general in nature rather than specific to the area of specialisation. Similarities and differences were also noted in the views of the various actors. As far as the teachers are concerned, these differences pertained to the magnitude of needs noted while for the professionals, they had to do with the variety of needs identified. This study shows us that needs analysis remains a valid exercise in French for specific purposes and that such an exercise should ideally be centred on the learner

Sprake, J. A. "Learning-through-Touring : a new design methodology for situated learning derived through touring the built environment." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2010. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/19426/.

Full text
Abstract:
This practice-led thesis asks how touring urban buildings and their environs can reinvigorate learning activities. Concepts and processes for learning through touring are developed through the thesis in the form of analytic investigations and design projects that aim to facilitate wider engagement for people to learn about the built environment. The development of a design methodology, learning-through-touring, is the key original contribution to knowledge that the thesis makes. The thesis provides a framework for making and investigating interconnections across areas of enquiry from different disciplines such as architecture, art, education, geography and urbanism. It is composed of two parts which operate in dialogue in relation to one another: Contexts and Projects. In one part, Learning and Touring Contexts, notions of site-specificity and subjectivity are argued to be relevant in rethinking the relationship between learning and touring. These discussions are then developed to produce the key concepts explored through the thesis: those that involve a shift from passive to active learning through visitor participation in the production of tours. The thesis proposes a new theoretical framework or context for considering how learning can take place through touring. The other part, Learning and Touring Projects, explores these ideas in practice, developing through a series of site-specific projects, new methods and processes for designing learning activities in tours. These projects are: Mudlarking in Deptford, Transitional Spaces at the V&A and Cracking Maps at the British Library. The thesis concludes by presenting a new design methodology – learning-through-touring. This methodology has relevance for those concerned with developing participatory practice in urban design and architecture, with education centres committed to delivering learning activities in and about the built environment, with educators who develop creative ways of engaging with the topography of the urban landscape, and with those researching mobile learning.

In this study, organizations are not seen as static structures driven by predetermined goals formally, but as symbolic fields sustained by daily actions and interactions through practices and organizing, including social learning and sociomateriality. The practice analyzed was the tourism, initially regarded as a social and economic phenomenon responsible for the movement of the service sector. Therefore, after a refinement promoted by reflections during the empirical phase, arose the question: how occur the organizing and learning of tourism as a practice located on the waterfront of João Pessoa/PB? Aiming to answer the question, we identified etnometodological the set of activities that constitute tourism as practice in waterfront João Pessoa / PB. In line with the Practice Based Studies on the method employed was ethnomethodology and techniques of data collection were used visual data, observation record in field notes, interviews and informal conversations. The waterfront where are situated the beaches of Manaíra, Tambaú and Cabo Branco in Joao Pessoa - PB this was the area in which the research was conducted, in addition to the prior process of attending meetings of the Local Management waterfront Committee. Data analysis was performed after triangulation, based on five key concepts of ethnomethodology garfinkiliana, whether achievement, indexicality, accountability, reflexivity and the member notion. The results indicate that the set of sociomateriais elements (human and nonhuman) that underpin tourism as practice in waterfront allowed illustrate how the material offers new possibilities to use this space. Finally, promoted a reflection on the process of social learning and practice of tourism on the waterfront from which it was found indeed that organizing and learning are intimately related parts of the same process. As a social practice, a new concept of tourism is presented as well as the constraints faced in the research and suggestions for future research.

Sirichuwong, Wasunee. "A Challenge for Change: a Thai Telecommunications Case Study." Thesis, full-text, 2009. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/2011/.

Full text
Abstract:
The study is set in the context of increased competition and rapid change in the telecommunications industry in Thailand. The aim of the research and the selected methodological tool of benchmarking is to contribute to improvement of work performance and to provide a basis for such improvement in the Business Management Sector III, including development of employee skills and knowledge, and increasing technical and professional capabilities. This study investigates the workplace practices of TOT Corporation Public Company (TOT) employees, comparing two divisions and utilizing the findings to contribute to plans for continuous improvement. The research complements the corporation's overall strategy to become a learning organization. Qualitative ethnographic research methodology is employed usmg a case study approach and descriptive statistical information is gathered using the methodological tool of internal benchmarking. The internal benchmarking is conducted in the phases of planning analysis integration, action phase and maturity. The research tools employed to conduct the study are observation, interview and self-reflection. The comparison of the revenue sharing process of Sector III, Divisions I and III staff from the observations, interviews and self-reflection provides details of changes deemed to be desirable to be adopted, according to eight themes namely, system management, time management, learning, learning organization, teamwork, motivation, professional development and benchmarking. It is indicated that there are key factors that TOT should consider regarding its organization and staff. An organization where people continually learn how to learn together, should ultimately become a learning organization and its staff require professional development and motivation. However, environmental and financial issues cannot all be resolved immediately and long term planning is required before full movement to a learning organization can occur. This thesis has identified areas of new knowledge for TOT. Benchmarking the two divisions enhances knowledge, understanding and self-development which can bring about the competitive edge that TOT requires. It not only pennits improved work processes but also conceptual thinking, although this is an ongoing process and change will continue to occur. The system management, time management, learning organization, professional development, teamwork and motivation are aspects that TOT should consider for attaining best practice. Knowledge management is required to allow staff to become learners and have improved performance. Employees can learn from their working experience in order to become regular and lifelong learners. This in tum is likely to lead TOT to become a learning organization. This study of performance and change in a large telecommunications company makes a contribution to the industry both nationally and internationally. It contributes to our understanding and knowledge of how change may be managed in a traditional organization in such a way as to enable it to move towards becoming a learning organization.

Abstract "Community" refers to a group of people with the same goal together. A community with a common learning goal has been coined as "professional learning community"(PLC). PLC is popular and been applied to all walks of life especially in the era of internet. The members of the community can learn collaboratively without the time and space constraints. In this study, the participants were tour guides and tour managers. The tourism practitioners provide special services to customers. The satisfaction of customers depends on the quality of the tourism practitioners. This study evaluated the development of a "Tourist Professional Learning Platform" (TPLP) where the tourism practitioners can plan tourist itinerary, records tourist itinerary, calculate tourist on-time rate, share tour pictures, tour recording, and suggestions from specialists. The tourism practitioners can learn and discuss tour-related issues with their community members on the platform. The participants in this study were invited from the fans of “Tour Guide” and “Tour manager” clubs on facebook. They were asked to finish a questionnaire aiming to explore their perceived usefulness, overall ease of use, and willingness of use after they experienced and operated TPLP. 62 valid questionnaires were collected. Among the 62 participants, all of them are qualified tour guides with certifications, 48 have been engaging tour work. The results showed that the participants had positive feedback on perceived usefulness, overall ease of use, and willingness of use on the platform. In addition, different backgrounds, such as years of experience, positions, education backgrounds were then analyzed. The results showed that participants with different backgrounds may have different perceptions and suggestions on TPLP. Keywords: tour manager, professional learning community, collaborative learning, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, willingness of use.
