Craye, Céline. "Intrinsic motivation mecanisms for incremental learning of visual saliency." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017SACLY006/document.
Conceiving autonomous perceptual systems, such as robots able to accomplish a set of tasks in a safe way, without any human assistance, is one of the biggest challenge of the century. To this end, the developmental robotics suggests to conceive robots able to learn by interacting directly with their environment, just like children would. This thesis is exploring such possibility while restricting the problem to the one of localizing objects of interest (or salient objects) within the robot’s environment. For that, we present in this work a mechanism able to learn visual saliency directly on a robot, then to use the learned model so as to localize salient objects within their environment. The advantage of this method is the creation of models dedicated to the robot’s environment and tasks it should be asked to accomplish, while remaining flexible to any change or novelty in the environment.Furthermore, we have developed exploration strategies based on intrinsic motivations, widely used in developmental robotics, to enable efficient learning of good quality. In particular, we adapted the IAC algorithm to visual saliency leanring, and proposed an extension, RL-IAC to allow an efficient exploration on mobile robots. In order to verify and analyze the performance of our algorithms, we have carried out various experiments on several robotics platforms, including a foveated system and a mobile robot, as well as publicly available datasets

Electronic Thesis or Diss., CentraleSupélec, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023CSUP0001.
The cerebral cortex appears in many models as an architecture of autonomous modules connected retroactively, exchanging sensory and higher-level information and implementing ex- tremely sophisticated learning tasks. This bio-inspired concept of a modular architecture has also a computational interest in the search for new learning paradigms, especially for the design of autonomous learning networks. They are indeed complex systems, which can conduct to the emergence of learning mechanisms due to the interaction between the modules. This thesis cre- ates a non-hierarchical architecture model of self-organizing maps. Self-organizing maps are an unsupervised learning algorithm that creates an ordered representation of any input space onto a low-dimensional space, and is inspired by the organization present in cortical areas. Due to the simplicity of their update rules and their ability to map an input to a position, they appear to us as natural candidates for the design of a modular architecture. In this work, we introduce a modified self-organizing map model and an interface method for associating them within a non-hierarchical architecture. We call this model CxSOM, standing for Consensus-Driven Multi-SOM. The the- sis constitutes an experimental analysis of the organization and learning mechanisms emerging from the association of those modules. We focus on highlighting associative memory mechanisms between several modalities ; the goal for the model is to learn a representation of multiple in- put spaces within the architecture, as well as the relationships existing between these inputs. To analyze these mechanisms, we focus on a method to represent the architecture’s responses, and propose visualization and learning measurement tools. Through this analysis framework, we were able to highlight specific learning behaviors of the architecture model. Particulary, we show an input prediction behavior that emerges from the interactions between the maps of the architecture. The construction of the CxSOM model and the analysis of its behavior on simple architectures stand as groundwork towards the design of a non-hierarchical architecture model with numerous maps
Crestani, Ana Paula.
Contextual fear memory formation, like the ones explored in the current work, requires the induction of the synaptic plasticity mediated by the activation of transmembrane receptors that are present in the brain structures as the hippocampus. The ionic flux through the N-methylaspartate- D-aspartate is crucial for activation of the intracellular signaling pathways that will support memory formation. However, these receptors are not necessary when animals had a prior similar learning. In this way, a previous learning can modify the plasticity mechanism that will be recruited to encode a new information, featuring a metaplasticity phenomenon. This phenomenon occurs when animals are pre-exposed to an environment where they will learn an associative learning later or when animals are re-exposed to the same behavioral task with distinct contextual/spatial cues. In the present study, we investigated (i) the synaptic plasticity mechanisms (receptors) and the non-synaptic plasticity mechanisms (neuronal excitability) required for the acquisition of the second learning and (ii) whether a subsequent learning that occurs in a remote time-point is still NMDAR-independent. The animals used in this study (mice or rats) were exposed to two sequential learnings that were performed in the contextual fear conditioning (CFC). The interval between conditionings were two days in the experiments of Chapter I and three or forty days in the experiments of the Chapter II. Each learning was performed in a box with differences on shape, odor and illumination (context A or context B). The first learning occurred in the context A followed by learning on context B. In the experiments of Chapter I it was evaluated the changes in the hippocampal neuronal excitability induced by the first conditioning, the receptors involved with the acquisition of the subsequent memory and the neuronal overlapping between the two sequential learnings. The Teg-Tag transgenic mouse allowed to identify the neurons activated for the first learning experience. This animal has the GFP expression under control of c-fos promoter that is activated by neuronal activity. It was shown by patch clamp that GFP+ neurons are still more excitable two days after learning. Also, the identification of neurons recruited for the subsequent learning was made through immunofluorescent staining of the Fos protein in its peak of endogenous expression, ninety minutes after learning. A greater overlapping (GFP+, Fos+) was observed when animals were retrained in the same context two days after first training. An intermediate overlapping was observed when animals were conditioned in the context B and this expression was significantly higher when compared to animals that were not 10 retrained in either context. Additionally, it was shown that acquisition of the subsequent learning is mediated by metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) instead of NMDARs In the Chapter II it was investigated whether a remote memory, acquired forty days earlier, is still able to influence in the synaptic plasticity mechanisms recruited for the acquisition of the subsequent learning. Systems consolidation dynamics was considered in these experiments because memory retrieval of a remote memory depends on neocortical brain regions, it not requires hippocampal activity. It was confirmed that hippocampus is not necessary for remote memory retrieval, however at least one longitudinal division of the hippocampus (dorsal or ventral) is essential for learning following a prior remote memory. Moreover, the results indicate that acquisition of the second learning is once again mediated by NMDARs in the hippocampus when the interval between learnings is extended from three to forty days. Altogether, our results suggest that the first learning lead to an increase in the neuronal excitability and modify the synaptic plasticity mechanism recruited for following learning, mGluR are required instead of NMDAR. Furthermore, the metaplasticity induced by first conditioning is transient; the second learning once again requires NMDARs activation when the interval between learnings is longer.

This research provides a mechanism to support the analysis and comparison of the interaction and the performance of students in the Moodle virtual learning environment through mobile devices and desktop computers. The proposed mechanism is based on a plugin provided to validation of teachers and tutors in classes and distance education. The methodology used in this survey was exploratory and was conducted through a case study where a comparison of two classes were made, one using conventional Moodle and the other using Moodle application for mobile devices. The goal was to identify relevant elements in the data records and access logs of VLE Moodle that could provide some information regarding student interaction and performance, and so determine the correlation that exists between these elements by statistical analysis. The motivation for this study began from the observation of distance education courses taught by the UFAM CED where a significant rate of withdrawal was detected. It is hoped that this research makes it possible to find elements that support using preventive measures and thus contribute to combating the disapproval, withdrawal and school evasion
Barros, Solange Christiane Gonzalez.
This research intends to approach the language teaching and learning from an enunciative perspective based on the Theory of Predicative and Enunciative Operations from Antoine Culioli. Our theoretical option is due to the fact we take into consideration the relevance of working with the articulation between grammatical marks and text production/understanding. With the purpose of this achievement, we study the notion of qualification conveyed by different grammatical marks for which this role is traditionally ascribed. It is included, for example, adjectives, adjective locutions and adjective sentences. We are mainly interested in the processes of predication that involves this notion as we aim to show that these processes are evidences for intersubjectivity marks which uphold these productions of meaning. We also propose to demonstrate that this teaching approach for grammatical marks articulated with the semantic and discursive notions is a way to promote the linguistic and cognitive development in students.
Universidade Federal do CearÃ, 2015. http://www.teses.ufc.br/tde_busca/arquivo.php?codArquivo=14277.

In public high schools, it is increasingly difficult for the teacher to identify individual or collective difficulties in specific content of the Mathematics discipline. According to the report presented by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (INEP), a body linked to the Ministry of Education (MEC), the level of learning of Brazilian students in Secondary Education has worsened in Mathematics and reached in 2015 Worse result since 2005, beginning of the historical series of the System of Evaluation of Basic Education (SAEB). Based on this information, the present work proposes and describes the contributions of the use of a mechanism to visualize student performance in assessments carried out in Moodle by the teacher. As proof of concept, the proposed mechanism was based on a prototype to dynamically present the result of the evaluations in graphs. The applied methodology was delineated by Case Study, and submitted to the validation of Mathematics teachers of the 1st Year of High School of a Federal Institute of Education (IFE) of the State of Amazonas. According to the teachers' opinion register, the results indicate that the approach is valid, since it allows the application of pedagogical interventions based on the information provided by the mechanism.

From mail to online teaching, Distance Education has gained increasing importance and recognition in the educational universe and it has already called attention to new forms of knowledge construction through digital technologies. This fact can be noticed in the characteristics of the teaching material used in Distance Education courses today. This material came to be a composed of set of multimedia features that complement each other in order to enhance the assimilation of information and the appearance of new areas of knowledge amplification. In this context, this Master Thesis presents the importance of three thematic classes (learning strategies and prospects of interaction underlying the material, as well as the instructional design of the production process of these resources) for Distance Education students learning. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze how these themes of educational materials related to the mathematics subject of the undergraduate course in Pedagogy at UFPB Virtual contribute to the education of the involved students. Therefore, data were collected from the teachers, students and staff members who are responsible for material production, using semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and non-participant observation, focused on printed material, video classes and on learning objects. The technique of thematic content analysis (BARDIN, 2002) was employed on the categories and subcategories emerging from discourses of subjects involved in this research. The results show the importance of all three mentioned materials, with emphasis on printed material as a basis to support the education of the students, more specifically in the perspective of learning facilitators and not only as mere sources of information.

The World Wide Web is increasingly used as medium, resource and platform for distance learning but in the literature surprisingly it is difficult to find works on Webbased distance learning pages authoring and edition. In fact, such activity is multidisciplinary, involving simultaneously many aspects of each page elaboration, since pedagogical viewpoint of content and navigation to user interface design. Particularly, authors are supposed to attend usability and accessibility criteria, in order to avoid serious usage problems like disorientation, navigation difficulties and frustration. However, potential e-learning authors - like teachers - usually are not experts in Web-page authoring and may be confused with diversity of resources available in common authoring tools. That is the main reason for development of authoring assistance tools. In addition, teachers do not know how to obtain and to apply usability and accessibility guidelines. The goal of this work is design, implementation and evaluation of a web-based distance learning pages authoring assistant, called EditWeb, in order to facilitate the design, elaboration and generation of instructional HTML web pages respecting usability and accessibility guidelines. The text contains some web-based distance learning fundamentals, discussing features of some environments, particularly their authoring process and mechanisms. Next, EditWeb environment specification and implementation is completely described. Finally, the evaluation of EditWeb by actual users and the validation of resulting pages are also discussed.

During the last years, physiology learning has been strongly favored by the development of mathematical models and patient simulators capable of safely reproduce specific parts or complete physiological systems. Studies show that traditional classes together with simulations are able to in-crease the comprehension of concepts involved. The main objective of this work is to develop a simu-lator of the cardiovascular system capable of representing the cardiac cycle dynamics in a didactic fashion. There are just a few available simulators of this kind, and the existing ones are based on simplified models or unfriendly interfaces. In order to achieve high flexibility in simulated scenarios and an adequate level of realism, we decided to use a mathematical model of the cardiovascular physiology to calculate variables and parameters acting in the background of the application. The development of this model constitutes the second objective of the present work. Due to the desired level of complexity, we decided to use an existing model found in the literature, improved with addi-tional parameters we found necessary. The result is a model with eight vascular compartments and all four cardiac chambers, with pulsatile behavior, controlled by the baroreflex mechanism, a short term control that regulates arterial pressure. The simulator (developed in Visual C# with an interface built in Macromedia Flash) allows the user to change individual parameters and simulate blood losses, as well as visualize press, flow and volume graphs from any compartment and also pressure-volume loops from the cardiac chambers. Moreover, the resulting application is open to future inclusion of new resources and tools, such as tutorials and pathology simulation.

The aim of this study is to identify and categorize the self-regulation mechanisms used by students on a master's degree programme in Didactics of Science at the Universidad Autónoma de Colombia. Taking into account the impact that personal learning environments have on students' academic activity, we find self-regulatory or meta-learning practices to be present in a number of areas, the broadest of which being in the educational macro-context. Here, three further contexts are identified: the context of information technology (IT); the context containing the interactions (IN) that individuals establish with their social surroundings and with different resources; and the context of psychopedagogy (PP). Individuals adopt information technologies differently, some with greater ease than others. Therefore, we apply three competency layers or levels to the collaborations taking place through communicative processes mediated by digital elements, which allows us to establish the degree of asymmetry occurring within them. To categorize these mechanisms, we consider their fit within the physical, social, methodological, temporal, behavioural and motivational dimensions established by Zimmerman for self-regulation. The results of our study demonstrate that they take place in cyclical processes of reinforcement and compensation. From a cybernetic point of view, such processes prove to vary in terms of order. In addition, we have detected other mechanisms that could potentially constitute grounds for future research (diagnostics and projects).

This dissertation presents a study on the effects of different reward functions applyed to multiagent reinforcement learning, for the vehicles routing problem, in traffic networks. Two reward functions that differ in the alignment of the numerical signal sent from the environment to the agent are addressed. The first function, called individual function is aligned with the agent’s (vehicle or driver) utility and seeks to minimize their travel time. The second function, is called difference rewards and is aligned to the system’s utility and aims to minimize the average travel time on the network (average travel time of all drivers). Both approaches are applied to two routing vehicles’ problems, which differ in the number of learning drivers, network topology and therefore, level of complexity. These approaches are compared with three traffic assignment techniques from the literature. Results show that reinforcement learning-based methods yield superior results than traffic assignment methods. Furthermore, the reward function alignment to the global utility, provides a significant improvement in results when compared with the individual function. However, for scenarios with many agents learning simultaneously, both approaches yield equivalent solutions.

The present study aims shows that Scientific Literacy involves more than the domain of scientific theories and concepts, it shows that it is necessary to incorporate understanding about the Nature of Science, thus promoting the development of scientific skills in the classroom. The History of Science is an important component when trying to understand the Nature of Science. This study was carried out in a rural elementary school with 12-to-15-year-old students. It was developed through a collaborative activity which aimed at rewriting the classic Micrographia book written by Robert Hooke in 1665. It was tested if this activity improve the possibility to teach aspects about the History and Nature of Science by developing scientific competences. In order to rewrite the book, students were first introduced to the historical context in which Robert Hooke lived, demonstrating cultural and scientific aspects related to that historical period. In the next step, students explored their home and school environments using a microscope made by themselves, built with PET bottles and lenses obtained from CD / DVD players to unravel an invisible world in which they had not previously known. After these steps, students had to draw and describe the structures observed using the microscopes, where they collaboratively rewrote the classic book, creating a replica. The learning evidences were evaluated through a quantitative tool called the Historical Word Association Test (HWAT), which aims to evaluate the general view of students about the historical period and the sociocultural circumstances involved. The students who participated in the didactic activity showed improvement in the identification and retention of ideas associated to the history of the discovery of the microscopic world, comparing to students who did conventional activities.

In this study called Linguistic mechanisms and intersubjective relations in textual production: enunciative activities in the teaching practice, the aim is to recall questions from the Master’s degree, such as the difficulty that students have to insert notions of qualification as explicit marks of intersubjective regulation (commented world) in their textual productions. Analysing, now, a practical work to be done in school contexts and considering the difficulties observed in the students’ textual production, we have the objective to i. explore more deeply the process of constitution of enunciative plans which involve linguistic mechanisms as marks of intersubjective regulation, especially the appreciative modality, which marks the enunciator’s point of view – favourable or unfavourable – about a content that is constructed linguistically; ii. determine and analyse the use of the appreciative modality in a corpus constituted of narrative texts, especially fables; iii. propose linguistic practices to be applied in the exercise of textual production aiming to explore, in the language teaching, the language process which can promote the students’ linguistic-cognitive development. It is used in this work the Theory of Predicative and Enunciative Operations proposed by the French linguist Antoine Culioli.

This research is characterized, first, by a theoretical discussion on the concept of autonomous agent, based on elements taken from the Situated AI and the Affective AI paradigms. Secondly, this thesis presents the problem of learning world models, providing a bibliographic review regarding some related works. From these discussions, the CAES architecture and the CALM mechanism are presented. The CAES (Coupled Agent-Environment System) is an architecture for describing systems based on the agent-environment dichotomy. It defines the agent and the environment as two partially open systems, in dynamic coupling. The agent is composed of two sub-systems, mind and body, following the principles of situativity and intrinsic motivation. CALM (Constructivist Learning Anticipatory Mechanism) is based on the constructivist approach to Artificial Intelligence. It allows a situated agent to build a model of the world in environments partially deterministic and partially observable in the form of Partially Observable and Factored Markov Decision Process (FPOMDP). The model of the world is constructed and used for the agent to define a policy for action in order to improve its own performance.

There is currently a controversy about the nature of chimpanzees’ social learning. One of the main issues is focused on chimpanzees’ learning abilities and whether this species is able to learn directly from a model's behaviour (action copy) or otherwise learns indirectly through the consequences of the model’s actions (results copy). The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability to copy actions and /or results on a sample of 14 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) from the Fundació Mona through 11 two-target puzzle box- with varying levels of difficulty. The individuals witnessed different sets of demonstrations under three conditions. 1) Control group, without information 2) results only, without actions (non-social information) 3) actions and results (social information). The demonstration involved both causally relevant actions and irrelevant actions, and, in addition, to assess the possible effects of the causal information, the box was presented in each of two conditions, opaque and clear. Each participant received eight trials in which they were given access to the puzzle box for manipulation. Subjects’ behaviour in each trial was assessed for (1) Type of manipulations, (2) Copy actions, (3) Success (4) Latency (5) First responses. For complex tasks the assessed of Copy of sequence order and the number and type of transitions between consecutive actions were added. An overall effect on social learning was detected in many variables. Individuals in the control group were less efficient than individuals in the experimental groups. Overall there were no significant differences between experimental groups, where individuals behave in the same way despite the kind of information they witnessed (social or non-social). Thus, they extract information mainly through the consequences of the model’s actions (emulation) or individually. However, the absence of action copy (imitation) was no total, some coping was found as well related to task difficulty and causal information, but only if the performance was averaged across trials.

Cumulative cultural evolution is a phenomenon that has been studied by a different number of areas in science and it suppose not only transmission, but also the progressive accumulation and modification of behavioral repertoire that would allowed knowledge development that would not be possible to be produced by a single individual alone. A relevant question in those studies is which social learning mechanism(s) is/are accountable for cumulative cultural evolution to occur. The goal of this study was to verify the effect from three different transmission forms – access to the final product, access to the process and instruction – in an experimental task in order to determine if cumulative cultural evolution would occur. In order to reach the goal, a structure construction task using modeling clay and reed were used. The structure was evaluated by putting it over a wooden holder with a hole in the middle of it, and 50-gram weights were thrown above the structure, one by one, until it collapse or a weight touched the table. Two hundred graduates and undergraduates students participated in the research. Participants were distributed into four conditions: at the process condition, participants could see others building their structures; at the final product condition, participants could see the finished structure from the previous participant; at the instruction condition, participants had could read an instruction left from the previous participant. At each condition, there were eight groups, with eight participants in each group, and the next one at the building task followed each participant. At the control condition, eight participants did the building task eight times each (one participant was equivalent to a group from the other conditions). None of the participants had access to the structure evaluation result. The study’s result showed that there were not gradual increase in the number of weights held by the structures as the participants were replaced; and in the groups at the process condition there were a statistical significance in relation to control group, and the number of weights held by the structures this condition were smaller than in the other conditions. One hypotheses is the lack of access to the structure evaluation results by the participants to be a crucial point that contributed to the non-occurrence of the cumulative cultural evolution

The main focus of this dissertation is on the reputation mechanisms of virtual learning communities implemented as peer-to-peer content sharing networks. The reputation systems modeled according to the Social Interaction Theory of Piaget and to the concepts of community and society introduced by Ferdinand Tonnies are the main contributions of the present study. The idea is to reach an effective deployment of virtual learning communities through peer-to-peer networks. The implementation of peer-to-peer networks in virtual communities raises several issues that should be noticed. The popularization of this concept due to the increase of content sharing by means of software such as e-mule and kazaa may be considered positive, but there are also limiting factors, as how to identify which material would be relevant for the content in question. Considering that the identification of origin and relevance is a key condition to the constitution of virtual learning communities, it is necessary to establish reputation mechanisms that approach such questions. The concept of value, the establishment of evaluation criteria for objects available, as well as the classification of agents that constitute the community are objects of study of this dissertation. This work takes place in an intersection area among Computer Science, Education and Sociology. The Social Interaction Theory, by Piaget, supports the Education area, Tonnies provides the support for the Sociology issues and, from Computer Science we take the support for the peer-to-peer networks approach.

This study sought to identify the results produced by the Bottom-Up learning (BU) in organizations having in mind that the variables Organizational Learning Culture (OLC), Coordination and Integration Mechanisms (CIM) and Leadership (LEAD) can interfere with the relationship between the learning method and the results obtained by the organization. To understand the phenomenon, after a bibliographic research, it was developed a multi case study by the methodology proposed by Yin (2009). They were surveyed four organizations active in different segments, named in this study as \"Empresa X\" (pharmaceutical industry), \"Empresa Y\" (franchiser in the food sector), \"Empresa Z\" (footwear industry and retail trade) e \"Empresa W\" (pharmaceutical industry). In these companies were surveyed the diretor, the salesman and and those responsible for industry innovation, production, commercial, financial and HR. Respondents were interviewed and filled out a questionnaire, and have existed prior collection of secondary data for greater understanding of the facts related to business. As a result, it was found that in the cases analyzed, there is apparently a combination of CIM factor and constructs LEAD and OLC, which allows the existence of BU learning. The results from this combination tend to express in financial terms, competitive and related to the market. The combination of the factor and the constructs do not necessarily lead to the innovativeness of the organization.

The main reason for this study is to observe the influence that the learning process have on the accumulation of technological capabilities between the period of 2008 to 2015 regarding the Rio de Janeiro single Social Security Fund (Rioprevidencia). For the study execution were seized two models built from Figueiredo (2015) capable of identify the process of the accumulation of technological capabilities based on learning process on private institutions. The adaptation proposal of those mechanisms into the reality of this fund and to present the influence that they have on technological capabilities was possible after the exams of those mechanisms types and characteristics and the evolution found on the technological capabilities levels showed along the proposed time period. Those analyses were made based on evidences collected from documentary researches, direct observation and semi structured interviews. Like this we can manage to identify in the end of the study, as similar as what happens at private institutions changes that those knowledge mechanisms retention generates on the Rioprevidencia accumulation of technological capabilities. It is expected along this empirical study to introduce this theme on the rise inside the Rio de Janeiro Government, showing the importance regarding the follow up of those variables in a near future, making its management to be used with due importance at the public sector.

Introduction: The Medical Coordination, which is the application of logistics techniques to the emergency context, is responsible for providing appropriate resources, in appropriate conditions to appropriate patients. A system for medical coordination of emergency requests was developed in 2009 and was implemented as a pilot project, although some activities related to medical coordination decision making are extremely subjective. Techniques from the areas of natural language processing, information retrieval and machine learning can be used to process clinical records and assist decision-making processes. Objectives: The present study aims to: (i) compare different methodologies for representation and information extraction from free text documents, such as coordination requests; (ii) provide decision support to prioritization of requests, with textual and semantic processing of clinical summaries of the cases; and (iii) analyze the contributions of clinical data and priority defined during the coordination process to the final case outcome. Methodology: Data from the pilot project, as well as data on the case outcome of coordinated patients admitted to the HCFMRP-USP Emergency Unit we used. Data was processed with the aid of Machine Learning, Information Retrival and Text Mining techniques to extract information organized into attributes to be used to enable decision support on the priority of the case. Results: The coordination requests data contain a large number of cases with very similar attribute values (sometimes identical), but with different classes (priorities), characterizing a database with a large amount of noise, making it hard to apply technologies such as Machine Learning. Results denote the subjective aspect in the definition of priorities, which may be influenced by other factors that are not present in the patient\'s clinical record text. Decision support results in prioritization and case outcome indicate that applying semantic processing, mapping terms to UMLS medical concepts, reduces the dimensionality problem when compared to less robust text mining approaches. The approach supported by information retrieval allows to classify only coordination requests that are more similar than a defined threshold to a historical case. Thus, this approach can be used to reduce overhead, allowing coordinators to focus their attention on the most critical cases and cases of greater particularity (not similar to historical cases). Conclusions: This work provided decision support in prioritizing cases of urgency and emergency coordination requests, with textual and semantic processing of clinical summary cases. It was defined as a proposal for decision support in prioritization of requestes a process consisting of three steps: (i) analysis of the risk of death; (ii) automatic pre-prioritization of cases of high similarity with historical cases; and (iii) decision support based on historical cases (examples-based learning).
Sarubbo, Maria Fiorella.
The development of medicine and technology has helped to increase the proportion of the aging population worldwide. This demographic context has created the need to better understand the changes that occur in the brain during aging and to find strategies to prevent, delay and mitigate its consequences. Although not all the molecular mechanisms involved in the aging process are well known, oxidative stress and activation of inflammation have been identified as the leading causes. In this regard, the polyphenols due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, may be key molecules contributing to the prevention of aging. The aim of this study was to determine the protective effects of the treatments with polyphenols on the changes that occur during aging in the brain, and to analyze the mechanisms of the action involved. Various chronic treatments were carried out with the polyphenols resveratrol, silymarin, quercetin and naringenin in old rats. Different behavioral tests were performed during treatments in order to analyze the effects at a cognitive and motor level, comparing the results with those of young and old control rats. After treatments and the sacrifice of animals it was analyzed: the synthesis and accumulation of monoamine neurotransmitters involved in cognitive and motor processes, by HPLC with electrochemical detection; and the immunoreactivity levels of different protein/signaling pathways (PI3K/Akt/mTOR, MEK/ERK, NF-B and SIRT1) involved in aging and/or inflammation, by Western blot. It was found that aging generates cognitive and motor impairment, which is caused in part by a decline in the central monoaminergic systems, as well as changes in the levels of proteins related to aging and inflammation. It was found that these changes are reversed by chronic treatment with resveratrol, silymarin, quercetin and naringenin. These compounds act as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, restoring the levels of the major monoaminergic neurotransmitters and regulating the levels of key proteins in the aging process and neuroinflammation such as SIRT1 and NF-B in brain regions critical for accurate functionality of cognitive and motor processes.

In many application domains, the variable time is an essential dimension. This is the case of Robotics, where robot trajectories can be interpreted as temporal sequences in which the order of occurrence of each component needs to be considered. In this dissertation, an unsupervised neural network model is developed for learning and reproducing trajectories of a Robot PUMA 560. These trajectories can have states in common, making the process of reproduction susceptible to ambiguities. The proposed model consists of a competitive network with two groups of synaptic connections: interlayer anel intralayer ones. The interlayer weights connect units in the input layer with neurons in the output layer and they encode the spatial information contained in the current input stimulus. The intralayer weights connect the neurons of the output Iayer to each other, being divided in two groups: self-connections and lateral connections. The function of these links is to encode the temporal order of the trajectory states, establishing associations among consecutive states through a Hebbian rule. Three additional mechanisms are proposed in order to make trajectory Iearning and reproduction more reliable: context units, exclusion of neurons and redundancy in the representation of the states. The model outputs the current state and the next state of the trajectory. The simulations with the proposed model illustrate the ability of the network in learning and reproducing muItiple trajectories accurateIy and without arnbiguities. In addition, the proposed neural network model is able to reproduce trajectories even when neuron failures occur and can generalize well in the presence of noise in the input stimulus.

A critical lack of approaches based on theoretical fundamentals to evaluating Cleaner Production Programmes (CPPs) in the academic literature collides with the significance of these programmes and with their crucial performance problems all over the world. Scientific guidance on designing and managing CPPs is nonexistent or unavailable to regular search on academic publications. Intending to reduce this scarcity of scientific knowledge, the research from which this Thesis gathers its results conceives approaches supported by theoretical underpinnings aimed to evaluate CPPs. Given the knowledge insufficiency on this subject, this Thesis constitutes an exploratory study devoted to the proposition of a set of analytical approaches. This set is intended to establish a basic theoretical framework whose approaches are designed to fit three analytical levels : (i) external aspects of a Programme under assessment (macro-analysis); (ii) structural constitution of this CPP and the dynamics of its components (meso-analysis); and (iii) psycho-sociological aspects of the CPP internal relations (micro-analysis). The main focus of elaborative work concerns the meso-analysis level, to which two approaches have been developed. Less development is dedicated to the other levels and the Thesis confines the elaboration of their approaches to their vital fit and sound synergy with the approaches of the meso-analysis level. The study indicates detailed features of the micro-analysis approach and how they develop in future advanced stages of the research. Similar indications of future developments for the macro-analysis approach receive attention in the discussions. Encompassing reviews of the literature on Learning Theories, Organisational Theories, Environmental Psychology, Complexity and Organisational Change underpin the conception and development of the approaches, integrating elements drew on an extensive review of the academic literature on CPPs. In order to overcome limitations pointed out from the elaboration of the approaches, a complementary empirical phase of qualitative research assumes vital importance to the study and its priority focused improvements in the structural analysis approach. Case Study methods and adapted features of Grounded Theory served as main contributing approaches/techniques to the complex confection of a Structural Blueprint for this analytical approach. Applying this Structural Blueprint as a tool to describe aspects examined in actual Cases, composing a Generic Case Study, followed by a series of analyses that progressively integrate theoretical concepts of the proposed approaches into the assessment supported by the Blueprint, the study succeed in consolidating the integration of the analytical approaches. The logical basis steering Thesis conceptions and developments stands on Morin’s concept of Complex Thinking, which provides guidance to the hermeneutic dialectic conducted in accordance with the study’s research posture. Nexus afforded by such philosophic-epistemological orientation prevails in the complex integration of multiple and diverse factors and concepts embodied in the analytical approaches, providing consonance for the typical ambiguities, oppositions, and paradoxes observed in phenomena related to CPPs. The proposed set of approaches features evident capacity to evaluate CPPs holding varied organisational arrangements, imparting rich interpretations of aspects that contribute to their results and serving its original purpose of assisting the comprehension of their performance. Thus the Thesis offers relevant contribution to this field of knowledge, which demands urgent theoretical advancements.

Penha, Bruno Rafael Gil 1990. "Aging effects in speech statistical learning : a behavioral and computational study." Master's thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/18236.
Speech segmentation is a difficult enterprise due to the lack or inconsistency of direct marking of word boundaries in speech, such as pauses. However, speech stream is highly structured, leading to co-ocurrences between stimuli, which learners are sensitive to and can acquire through a process known as statistical learning (SL). Cues to speech segmentation can be prosodic, acoustic-phonetic or distributional, this last class consisting of several computations, such as transitional probabilities (TP) between syllables. Studies on syllables TP have shown that they alone are sufficient to segment speech. Although there have been some studies about the importance of syllables TPs in speech segmentation in infants and young adults, this kind of research is lacking in the elderly. In this work we compare young and older adult performance in an artificial language learning paradigm. An artificial language that excludes other than distributional cues was used, enabling the exploration of this kind of cues importance for speech segmentation. After the participants were exposed to the language a forced-choice test was enforced between words and part-words where participants were asked to identify the word belonging to the language. Both words and part-words were divided in high-TP and low-TP categories, allowing for a fine-grained analysis. SL is dependent on attentional focus for an effective performance. Because young adults perform poorly at choosing low-TP words while doing a divided attention task, we expect similar results for older participants in this task due to brain areas’ important for SL and attentional declines characteristic of aging. Two computational models of word segmentation, PARSER and Simple Recurrent Network (SRN), were tested to see how close they are from human performance. Each represents a different approache to speech segmentation: PARSER is chunk-based while SRN is TP-based Our behavioral results show that both groups perform similarly in identifying high-TP words but older participants performed significantly worse (at chance level) in identifying low-TP words whether young participants surprisingly performed better compared to high-TP. Because this study did not include a neuroimaging component, we can only theorize the reason behind these results. Further neuroimaging studies could give a more concrete answer to this problem. Our computational results show that PARSER outperforms humans by far, while SRN performance is more alike humans’. Despite the simplicity of the models here used, results seem to indicate that TP computations have a greater credibility in speech segmentation than random choosing of chunks and further memory mechanisms.

The ability to identify words in the continuous chain of speech is one of the first tasks we face when learning a language. It is believed that processes associated with the extraction of statistical regularities present in this input, in particular the probability of one segment following another, are fundamental to word identification. However, evidence on how this identification is affected by the transactional probabilities (TP) of the input’s stimuli and the conditions under which these are presented is scarce. In this study, we used the statistical learning (SL) paradigm presented under implicit and explicit learning conditions to test behavioral and neural differences in the discrimination of “words” vs. distractors in a two alternative forced choice task (2-AFC). In this task, eight “words”, four with high TP (1.0) and the remainder with low TP (.50), were presented in the familiarization phase of each task and exhaustively paired with eight distractors (PT = 0). The behavioral and electrophysiological data showed that, although there was behavioral evidence of statistical learning for the two types of "words" in the two learning conditions, effects of the type of “words” and the conditions in which they were presented were only shown in the electrophysiological data.

This study aimed to explore the Implicit Learning mechanisms in pre-school children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) through an Artificial Grammar Learning task. The results showed that in the learning phase, children with SLI and DLN presented a similar behavior, however, when the behavior of the two groups per block was analyzed, we observed that there was an improvement of the DLN group from block 1 to block 2. Regarding the test phase, the performance of DLN did not differ from that expected against chance, however the performance of SLI was significantly lower than expected against chance. It was also observed that the performance of the SLI group was statistically lower than that of the children with DLN, which may indicate that the deficits of these children at language level are related to the fact that they are not able to extract the structural regularities present in the linguistic input that comes to them, to create rules and to generalize such rules to other contexts.
Garcia, Duarte João Machado. "Do cohorts accelerate? : startups accelerators and unentrepreneurial learning." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/21811.
Gviniashvili, Giorgi. "Start-up learning process in accelerator programs." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/22200.
No entanto, as empresas empreendedoras tendem a falhar, muitas vezes, devido á problemas iniciais.
The injection moulding process over the years has been widely used in the production of high cadence of plastic components. With the growing development of this area, the injection moulds geometry have become increasingly complex, which requires better control of the process. On the other hand, the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution promoted a digital transformation capable of improving the performance and adaptation of the injection moulding process through the sensing of the production linked to artificial intelligence systems. This project focused on the development of an autonomous monitoring system for the control of failures during the injection of a plastic mould, having been carried out in the facilities of the Pole of Innovation in Polymer Engineering (PIEP). Thus, the main objectives of the current dissertation aimed the development of a program with the ability of detecting and predicting process faults during production, where machine learning models were implemented in order to intervene autonomously with corrective actions depending on fault type. To ensure these requirements, a fully understanding of the communication protocols between computer/machine was needed. A database was created to store, and process all outsourced from real-time data. With the use of sensors to study diverse pattern behaviours influenced by parametric deviations, helped obtaining correlations between the virtual environment of injection and real injections environment. All the idealized program functionalities were tested through a virtual monitorization of the injection moulding process with the presence of non-labelled datasets. Looking ahead, all the functionalities of the software to monitor the process were tested through a virtual injection moulding environment with non-labelled datasets and the correlation between both environments of the study was increased by a machine learning regression model. As a conclusion, the main goal of reducing human intervention during the process with the use of monitorization mechanism was achieved with the outstanding positive results obtained during the application of all the measures conducted along the project. It was attained an autonomous monitorization of the injection moulding process, providing both good efficiency and good response time for the control of the process in comparison with the response time taken with the manual process.
Faria, Frederica Rodrigues Freitas.
We live immersed in a world where events do not occur randomly. The ability to extract regularities from the environment that surrounds us even without being aware of doing it is called implicit learning. This ability plays a significant role in the acquisition of a wide range of skills, from perceptual and motor skills, to social cognition as well as in many of the rule-governed aspects of language. However, the developmental dynamics of implicit learning remains unclear. In this dissertation, we used an Artificial Grammar Learning (AGL) paradigm with Portuguese adults and preschool and school children to test for changes in implicit learning mechanisms throughout development. In this paradigm, participants were firstly exposed to a training or familiarization phase in which letter sequences were presented, followed by a test phase, where they were asked to decide whether other letter sequences not previously presented obey, or not, to the rules that define how the letter sequences presented in the training phase were combined. Hits above the chance level were interpreted as evidence of learning in the task. The results revealed evidence of implicit learning only in the group of adults, although this result was mainly due to the correct rejection of non-grammatical sequences that contain salient violations or illegalities of the underlying rules. These results question the use of AGL tasks to test for implicit learning both in children and adults.
